Preparations are under way for the launch of Newcastle Christmas Market which will be offering a host of festive food, drinks and gifts in the city centre.
Work began on Wednesday – the day after the switch-on of Newcastle’s Christmas lights – on installing the wooden chalet-like stalls that are to be laid out around Grey’s Monument and Old Eldon Square in readiness for Saturday’s opening day, when first visitors will be able to enjoy the likes of mulled wine, sweet and savoury treats and plenty early festive spirit.
Shoppers will find a range of mainly local gifts, crafts and produce available to buy in the run-up to Christmas, from stalls spread out around the Monument area at the top end of both Grey Street and Grainger Street and extending along to Old Eldon Square.
These are expected to be trading up until December 23. In addition, a bar called Moosenwirt – an Alpine-inspired pop-up inside a yurt – is being set up outside Lloyds Bank where it will be serving drinks from November 19 right through the festive season until January 2.
The Christmas Market’s opening times will be from 10am until 8pm daily (5pm Sundays). To add even more choice to the mix, the adjacent Grainger Market will be extending its usual opening hours of 10am-5.30pm from Monday to Saturday.
It is to open on four upcoming Sundays: November 27, December 4, December 11 and December 18 from 11am until 4pm. Pictures by Craig Connor
