The world continued its relatively warm start to 2022, with February ranking as the seventh-warmest February in the climate record.

Last month also wrapped up an extremely warm December – February season for the planet, according to scientists from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information.

Here’s more from NOAA’s latest monthly global climate report:

Climate by the numbers

February 2022 | Season (December 2021 – February 2022)

The February global land and ocean surface temperature was 1. 46 degrees F (0.81 of a degree C) above the 20th-century average, ranking as the seventh-warmest February in the climate record.

Regionally, Asia, Europe and South America saw average temperatures that ranked among their eight-warmest Februaries on record. North America was the only continent to have a below-average February temperature.

Looking at the three-month season, the global surface temperature was 1.51 degrees F (0.84 of a degree C) above the 20th-century average of 53.8 degrees F (12.1 degrees C), tying with 2015 as the world’s fifth-warmest such period on record.

December through February was also the Northern Hemisphere’s sixth-warmest meteorological winter and the Southern Hemisphere’s seventh-warmest meteorological summer on record.

Other notable takeaways from the report

  • Polar sea ice was scant. Antarctic sea ice extent (coverage) for the month was the smallest on record — 830,000 square miles (29.6%) below average — surpassing the previous smallest February extent set in 2017. The February 2022 Arctic sea ice extent was 4.5% below average and the 14th-smallest February extent in the 44-year record.
  • A warm start to 2022 so far. The year-to-date (January and February) global surface temperature was the sixth highest on record. According to NCEI’s Global Annual Temperature Rankings Outlook, it is virtually certain (> 99.0%) that 2022 will rank among the 10-warmest years on record.
  • Tropical cyclone activity saw a significant uptick. The globe had an above-average number of tropical cyclones in February, with a total of eight named storms, four of which intensified to become hurricanes (also known as cyclones or typhoons in parts of the Eastern Hemisphere). The South Indian Ocean was the most active ocean basin with five named storms, tying with February 2000 and February 2007 for the most named storms since 1981.

Bay Area residents could expect the uncommonly warm, windy February weather to linger into the coming weekend, meteorologists said Wednesday.

Record or near-record high temperatures in the 70s — about 10 to 20 degrees higher than usual — were expected across the Bay Area through at least Friday before cooling off toward the end of the weekend and into next week.

Temperatures in downtown Oakland set a record Wednesday after reaching 75 degrees, breaking the old high of 74 degrees set on Feb. 9, 2006.

“It’s not really hot weather,” said Ryan Walbrun, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in the Bay Area. “But in February, in the middle of winter,” it’s unusual, he said.

The warm, dry weather is the product of a stubborn high-pressure front that’s camped out over the California coast and isn’t likely to budge for several more days. Offshore winds, more common in summer and fall, began blowing early Wednesday morning, with a gust reaching 60 mph in the North Bay mountains and winds in the upper 30 mph range in the East Bay hills and along the San Mateo County coast.

Overnight saw wind gusts around 40 mph, isolated up to 60 mph over the highest North Bay Mtns, w/ dry relative humidity.

As offshore winds prevail, conditions are forecast return once again tonight at higher elevations of North & East Bay. #dontBeThatSpark #CAwx pic.twitter.com/HqTWBQjtc9

The National Weather Service has not issued a red flag or fire warning — mainly because vegetation is still moist from October and December rains — but is advising people to be cautious of sparking fires which could spread more quickly in the dry, gusty winds. A vegetation fire sparked Wednesday near Stinson Beach in Marin County, but it was quickly addressed by firefighters.

“February is usually one of the wetter months but we are now in excess of a month without appreciable rain,” Walbrun said. “If you bring record warm temperatures and higher than usual winds, you will get increased fire danger. Fuels still have moisture but each day without rain, you lose a little bit more of that.”

Cal Fire officials said the warm weather, as well as the 700-acre Colorado Fire in Big Sur in January, serve as reminders that the California wildfire season never really ends.

“We have this misnomer that in winter fire season ends,” said Jon Heggie, a Cal Fire battalion chief. “The weather we’re experiencing is not normal but it’s not unheard of, either. It definitely adds to potential for ignitions.”

Since he joined Cal Fire as a seasonal firefighter in 1991, Heggie said, unusual weather events like December’s record rainfall and the current spell of rainless days have become increasingly common, he said, making fire season more unpredictable.

“It makes it great for the flowers but is concerning for us,” he said. “We’re wondering what the results will be as we get closer to springtime. Will we see an increase in fire activity?”

Mike Pechner, an independent meteorologist who lives in Cordelia, said the warm weather and the extended lack of rainfall had a devastating effect on the Sierra snowpack, which serves as a water bank for California, feeding reservoirs as it melts, typically in the spring and into the summer.

But warmer temperatures cause the snow to melt earlier, he said, still pouring into reservoirs, where it’s drawn down but not saving water for the dry season.

“This February is dry so far and of great concern because at this point, the snowpack should be increasing, and it is not,” he said. “We’re actually falling behind. The snowpack is about near average for this time of year but every day we go without snow, it’s going below average.”

At Donner Summit, Pechner said, there were 120 inches of snow on the ground on Jan. 5. By Wednesday morning half of that had melted.

“That’s a huge drop,” he said.

The UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab, which reported record snowfall in December, tweeted about a new record Wednesday — the longest consecutive period in winter without precipitation — 32 days, and 32 without snow.

Record broken: Our lack of storms over the last month has now led to the longest consecutive period without measurable #precipitation during meteorological winter (WY 1971-2022) with 32 since our last #snowfall.

The previous record was 31 days in 1990. 1/2#CAwx #CAwater pic.twitter.com/8Ht4lbTETV

— UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab (@UCB_CSSL) February 9, 2022

But there is hope for the snowpack. The weather is expected to turn cooler by the start of next week and a weather system known as “an inside slider” could move down the Sierra next Tuesday or Wednesday, bringing much-needed snow along with temperatures that will slow, or even stop, the meltoff, Pechner said. It’s not expected to bring rain to the Bay Area, though high temperatures should return to the 50s and 60s.

The Bay Area’s next hope for rain, meteorologists agree, should come near the end of the month. Pechner said forecasts show rain is possible around Presidents’ Day with another couple of storms following. None of those appear to be big storms, he said, but they are still welcome.

“We just might see enough rain and snow to save the month of February,” he said.

Weather in Dubai in February

Immediately after entering the plane, with the first rays of the bright Arabian sun, it becomes clear that you have arrived in the summer. The UAE is dominated by a dry subtropical climate and enjoys warm weather throughout the year. For those who suffer from high blood pressure and do not tolerate the heat, it will seem more than comfortable. The absence of debilitating heat and unbearable stuffiness provoked by an increased level of humidity favors an active pastime. You can move through the streets not as before, in small dashes, but measuredly and leisurely, not each time trying to cool off in an air-conditioned bus stop or cafe. The average daily air temperature, according to meteorologists, is about +24 °C. On some days it rises to +25..+26 °C. When planning a long stay outdoors on clear days, do not neglect sunscreen. Although ultraviolet radiation is not as powerful as before, nevertheless it is quite enough to get a burn.

Some days the weather is feverish with rain. The total amount of precipitation in this month is small, but in the context of the whole year it is maximum. According to statistics, there are 3 to 5 rainy days in February. In general, for these parts they are a rarity, so if you find them, consider that this is a kind of attraction. In addition, the rains are quite warm and do not cause any unpleasant sensations. When packing your suitcase for a trip, do not forget to put long-sleeved clothes in it, such as: a windbreaker or a light jacket, a thin sweater or raglan. They will come in handy when visiting shopping malls and traveling to the subway, where air conditioners are running around the clock, as well as during evening walks. The fact is that with the onset of darkness, the air cools rapidly: on average, 15..+16 °C is recorded, but sometimes it is +16..+18 °C. An unpleasant feature inherent in February is sandstorms. True, they do not happen often, but when they do, they certainly upset the plans of tourists. So, in 2012, such an anomaly disrupted the famous Trade Festival. The Global Village had to close for several days. One can imagine the disappointment of those whose main purpose of arrival was shopping.

What to do in Dubai in February?

Despite the fact that the February weather is far from ideal, crowds of foreigners flock to Dubai at the end of winter. The most attractive emirate for tourism greets its guests with unfailing hospitality, offering all the best that the UAE has to offer: generously golden sun, amazing white-sand beaches, exciting entertainment, marvels of engineering and advanced technologies. A separate line should be highlighted shopping, which exceeds all the wildest expectations of fashionistas and women of fashion: this month, the final stage of grandiose sales called “Dubai Shopping Festival” takes place.

Beach holiday

Dubai is famous for its endless strip of virgin sandy beaches with superbly developed infrastructure, high levels of cleanliness and ecology. However, pampered holidaymakers, most likely, will not like a beach holiday in February, since the water in the Persian Gulf cools down to +18. .+21 °C. Swimming in it is pretty invigorating, you hardly want to swim for a long time: you plunge and immediately bask on the shore. By the way, the weather is very conducive to sunbathing, and if you do it every day, then you are guaranteed an impeccable tanning effect.

For “insurance”, some tourists settle in hotels that have beach clubs on their territory. A few meters from the water’s edge – a concentration of pools of various sizes and depths. This is convenient because if the sea is stormy, you can indulge in water pleasures. And for those who are on vacation with children, this option is most acceptable. If accommodation in hotels 4 and 5 * is not affordable, for an additional fee, entry to private beaches becomes available to everyone.

Entertainment and excursions

For fans of a variety of excursions, Dubai in February is a real blessing. The most comfortable air temperature allows you to take an active part in educational tours even in the daytime. And this means that you will be able to see much more than during the high holiday season. The first thing that strikes everyone who sets foot on the fertile land of the emirate is skyscrapers that outdid the most famous buildings in the world in design and luxury. They are champions not only in height, but in their “saturation”. In order to view all the skyscrapers at the same time, purchase a ticket to the “on the top” observation deck, located on the 124th floor of the 828-meter Burj Khalifa tower. But keep in mind that you need to do this in advance – at least 3-5 days in advance, since there are a lot of people who want to. Another building that attracts the attention of the tourist public is the 7 * Burj Al Arab hotel in the prestigious Jumeirah area. To get there, you have to spend a lot of money. The easiest way to marvel at its chic decoration is to book a tour with a guest dinner. Another masterpiece of architectural and engineering thought is the twin towers Emirates Park Towers 376 m, considered one of the highest hotels in the world. “Catchers” for beautiful views must certainly ride around Dubai at night, illuminated by a million “cosmic” lights.

If it did not exist in reality, one could say that this is the city of the future. In addition to seeing the skyscrapers in Dubai, you will find numerous entertainment centers, water parks, golf courses, nightclubs, as well as restaurants and cafes with multinational cuisine. In February, shopping is of great interest, shopping centers offer significant discounts to customers as part of the “Shopping Festival” that started in January. Among them, for example, Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Deira City Center and Wafi City Mall. No less exciting is the process of shopping in authentic oriental bazaars and markets. To admire the city “from the water”, head straight to Creek Bay, where for a nominal fee you will be taken for a ride on a traditional Arab schooner “dhow”. To test the thrill, we recommend taking part in races on wild sand dunes.

Holidays and festivals

Except for the “Shopping festival” which takes place on the first few days of the month,

in February, the Dubai Tennis Open is sponsored by the Prime Minister. Another sporting event is the Desert Classic organized by the Emirates Golf Club. Also in February you can find exhibitions and music concerts.

What are the prices for holidays in Dubai in February?
