January Festivals in Spain – The Best Fiesta Guide
La Tamborrada Festival San Sebastian
The Tamborrada is one of the loudest festivals in Spain, held in San Sebastian on the 19th and 20th of January each year.
Hundreds of drummers, parade the streets making as much noise as is humanly possible.
This famous street party starts around midnight on the 19th of January and is one of the most anticipated fiestas held in the Basque country during the year.
Great fun and an impressive spectacle, and one where ear-plugs come in very handy.
» Official website for the Tamborrada Festivals
Medieval Market Festival Orihuela
Medieval Market Orihuela
Held at the end of January over three days in the historic town of Orihuela in the province of Alicante just a short ride from the coastal town of Torrevieja.
Orihuela celebrates its two distinct areas, the Moorish zone and the Christian quarter.
Lots of things going on make this fun for all the family including lots of barbequed food, arts, and craft stalls, live music, parades, and camel rides.
Well worth visiting if you are staying on the Costa Blanca.
The Vijanera Festival – Cantabria
Festival of San Anton – Canillas de Albaida – Malaga
The festival of San Anton is a celebration in honour of San Anton, the Patron Saint and protector of animals and held closest to the 17th January each year. The festival started around the 17th century and usually begins with traditional bonfires” Lumbres” followed by fireworks and small street processions.
» Official Website of Canillas de Albaida
Fiesta de las Cuadrillas
The Fiesta de las Cuadrillas is held on the last Sunday of the month of January in the small town of Barranda in the region of Murcia.
It is now one of the most important fiestas dedicated to the traditional music of the region.
The Cuadrillas festival was first held in 1977 and is now classed as a Tourism Event of National Interest.
If you are a special fan of local folklore music this one is well worth visiting.
Jarramplas – Caceres
Local young men dress up in highly protective scary colourful costumes and then get duly pelted by people throwing hard turnips at them, not for the faint-hearted this one but great fun all the same.
The exact origins of the Jarramplas festival are open to debate, depending on who you talk to in the village, the most common theory is that it represents a cattle thief punished by the local residents.
Andalucia Festivals
5th – Cordoba Chocolate Festival – Website
6th – Romeria a la Aldea de Rocio Pilgimage – La Palma del Condado – Huelva
16th – Las Lumbres de San Antono – Jaen Andalucia
16th – Bonfires at Hoguera de San Antono – Ubeda Jaen Province Andalucia
17th – Fireworks and fun during the San Anton Festivals held in Nerja, Malaga, Granada and Alhaurin el Grande.
The festival takes place on the first Sunday of the new year in the town of Silio in the region of Cantabria, northern Spain.
Its origins are Celtic and relate to celebrating the winter solstice.
The mostly male inhabitants of Silio dress up as witches, devils and many other famed Celtic figures.
A highly unusual festival that is well worth visiting if you are ever in this picturesque area of Spain during the month of January.
