Climate and Weather – Weather in Tenerife in January

Is January a good time to visit Tenerife?

Summer never ends, they say, on the idyllic island of Tenerife in the Canaries, and with its tropical ambience, temperate climate and low rainfall it indeed offers the sunny side of life all year round. The weather in Tenerife means visitors can enjoy the 12 Blue Flag beaches, forest walks and  soaring volcano in January and every month of the year.

Climate in Tenerife in January

“Winter sun” is the watchword of the tour touts for Tenerife during January, and for once you can believe the sales talk! With an average maximum temperature of 21°C during January, the Canary island of Tenerife is a bright beacon in a bleak northern European winter, just four hours flying time from the grim, wintry UK. Nothing is perfect, however, and we have to admit to the odd spot of rain, but on this idyllic island this is more likely to fall in the northern part of the island. The south, which includes the popular resorts of Playa de las Americas and Los Gigantes, experiences an average of six hours of sunshine a day in January, and is drier and warmer all year round than the north and the high altitude slopes of the mountain. A real novelty of the island’s micro-climate is being able to sunbathe on the beach in the morning, and take a trip up the Teide Mountain to play in the snow in the afternoon.

What’s on in Tenerife in January

The sound of music pervades Tenerife, and the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria, during January when the Canary Islands Festival takes place, showcasing the best of classical music in a variety of venues, especially the Santa Cruz Auditorio on Tenerife. Music lovers flock from around the world to enjoy this popular festival, which includes local and international orchestras.

What to pack for a holiday in Tenerife in January

It’s the middle of winter on the islands, but that simply means you may need a warm jumper in the evenings, if you plan to stick to the coast. For the rest of the time bring your beach gear – sunbathing and swimming will be high on the agenda – and some saucy party outfits for evening fun. A pair of comfortable trainers will be good if you want to explore the island on foot. Those planning to conquer the crest of Mount Teide will need snow gear – temperatures aloft in the snow can be close to freezing or below.
