1. Regional climate in January.

1.1. Northern Vietnam

This part includes Northwest, Northeast and Red River Delta, with 25 cities and provinces.
Popular destinations:
Hanoi, Halong Bay, Ninh Binh, Sapa, Mai Chau and Ha Giang.

January in Hanoi and North Vietnam is one of the driest months of the year with the prime of winter which brings almost no rain. Average temperature will be around 20oC, and annual rainfall is also mostly at its lowest of approx. 40mm.

Water activities in Halong Bay, Cat Ba island and other beaches in North Vietnam are quite impossible due to the cold temperature.

In the far North (mountainous areas) such as Sapa, Mau Son (Lang Son), Ha Giang, etc, the conditions are dry but chilly, and sometimes foggy, especially in the early morning or late night. There is a chance of getting snow in these areas as well.

As being quite hazy at this period of year, this seems not the best time for photo hunters.
Suitable clothing and shoes are recommended.

1.2. Central Vietnam

This part includes North Central, South Central Coast and Central Highlands, with 19 cities and provinces.
Popular destinations: Quang Binh, Hue, Danang, Hoian, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang.

This part of Vietnam in January has warmer weather than the North with the average temperature at around 23oC. The wet season draws to an end and prolonged rainfall rarely occurs, especially during the 2nd half of the month. The beaches such as Danang, Hoian, Quy Nhon and Nha Trang, etc. shake off their winter coats and slowly return to their glory days. However, the weather in the Central Highlands is still cooler, chilly, in particular in the morning and at midnight.

You can prepare swimwear, appropriate light clothing, and some warm clothes for evenings and early mornings when the temperature is much cooler than daytime.

1.3. Southern Vietnam

This part includes Southeast and Mekong River Delta, with 19 cities and provinces.
Highlights
: Ho Chi Minh City, Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, Mekong Delta, Vung Tau, Con Dao Phu Quoc, etc.

The South of Vietnam in January possesses some of the best conditions of the year with blue skies and little rain expected across the region. The beaches such as Phan Thiet/ Mui Ne, Ho Tram, Long Hai are basking in sunshine. It is the same with the southern islands of Phu Quoc and Con Dao. In Ho Chi Minh City, the weather remains hot in the daytime and becomes cooler in the nighttime with low humidity and the average temperature at 26°C.

2.

January Events

2.1. Tet – Vietnamese New Year.

This nationwide celebration usually falls between late January and mid-February (varying by year). This period becomes the most important event of the year when drawing Vietnamese back to their ancestral homes. You can feel the festive atmosphere when Lunar New Year coming so close throughout the country. Although there will be some limits on visits or activities if you travel right in Tet Holiday because most services are in closure, especially in Northern Vietnam, it is a chance for you to experience the Vietnamese culture deeper, especially when you are invited to a hosted family in these days.

2.2. Dalat Flower Festival.

Being held in early January, this biennial festival features elaborate and mammoth floral displays, plus live music, fashion shows, and more. This is always a wonderful occasion and also becomes an international event.

2.3. Sa Dec Flower Festival.

It can be said that Sa Dec (Dong Thap Province) is the second flower city after Dalat. Visiting Sa Dec, you have chance to see a kind of flower kingdom. The flower festival is proposed to open from December to February so the visitors can come to admire the beauty of flowers as well as to enjoy many activities of the locals in Western waters. If anyone would like to buy some, don’t hesitate to choose your favorite kind to bring home.

3. Where to go in January?

As the South has the best weather conditions in January, this is fantastic time to explore Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta. Taking a boat in Mekong Delta is a good choice when the water is calm. Flowers are also in bloom, bringing the sensational colors of the floating markets.

For the best beach experience, you can head to Phu Quoc Island where the temperatures at this time of year average around 25-28°C. Beach paradises and pristine islands are in the best time for swimming, snorkeling and diving.

The Central Vietnam is also on top list of traveling with sunny and warm weather, not too hot and humid. The beach vacation in Danang, Hoian, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang is in relatively good season.

Cherry blossoms in Dalat in around middle of January. The fresh air of the mountain town makes visitors here feel more comfortable.

In the North, although having cooler weather than the Central and the South, Halong Bay – a UNESCO Heritage Site should not be skipped. Its beauty becomes more mystery in the foggy scenery.

In late January (or mid-February, varying by year), the whole country is busy to celebrate Tet Holiday. However, nowhere can’t beat Ho Chi Minh City, Hue, and especially Hanoi for the best experience. At the stroke of midnight on Tet eve, fireworks will let fly across some main points of Hanoi, launching a full week of festivals and festivities.

Don’t miss to visit mountainous areas to admire the gorgeous scenery of flower bloom in January, along with the low temperature background (sometimes below 0°C). From Mai Chau, Moc Chau to Sapa, Ha Giang, peach flowers bloom throughout the hillsides. That’s the signal that the cold winter is passing through and the warm sunshine of spring will come very soon.  You can also see the bright white of plum blossoms in Moc Chau Plateau, normally late January – early February.

4. Our advice

– As there are the most diverse weather characteristics throughout the country in January, please choose the appreciate clothing with you to your chosen destination in Vietnam, such as:
+ Swimsuit: you should bring at least one swimsuit for the duration of your trip. Even you visit Sapa, it is still suitable when you take a traditional herbal bath or at hotel’s four season swimming pool (if any).
+ Trekking shoes / booths, coat and warm clothes: suitable for your visit in North Vietnam, especial in highland regions such as Sapa, Ha Giang, Pu Luong, etc.
+ Light clothes, a pair of flip-flops, sunglasses, hat: suitable for the visit in the Central or the South, especially for beach vacation.
+ Light raincoat: to avoid the mid-day thunderstorms in the South or thick foggy in Sapa as a layer if the temperature drop unexpectedly. Anyway, this can be easily bought when you are in Vietnam if needed.

– Vietnam has many historical sites, temples, pagodas, therefore, formal clothes (covering your knees and shoulders) are a must to visit these spiritual/cultural places.
– January is definitely a high tourist season month in Vietnam, especially in the beach areas. The North will be the less crowds by this time of the year in comparison with the rest parts of the country.
– Late January – mid February (varying by year) is Tet, the biggest festival of the year in Vietnam, so this is one of the busiest traveling times for both locals and visitors. Making reservations in advance are highly recommended. However, please be aware that there will be a shortage of services during the Tet celebration as many shops, markets, offices… are closed, and surcharges from 20-30% from the normal rate of high season are also expected to apply for this period of time.

In summary, coming to Vietnam in January will bring you a lots of choice and experience when travelling throughout the country. Hopefully you and your family have a well-prepared packing and plan a holiday with us soon. We are here and be always ready to assist any of your requirements!

Top 17 Warm Weather Destinations for Families Escaping Winter

In case you haven’t been watching the news lately, winter is here. In a big way! While I’m lucky enough to live in the San Francisco Bay Area where it never really gets that frigid, I feel for my friends in New York, Boston, Chicago, Seattle, and in many other places where winter can really be a drag. Ready to escape shoveling snow and driving on slick roads already? Why not plan a little winter getaway with your family to a warm weather destination this year?

Here are 17 amazing destinations that offer warm weather and family-friendly activities and accommodations for a winter getaway. And while I’ve personally visited the vast majority of the destinations on this list, I haven’t written about them all. So I’ve collected and linked to the very best destination guides from several trusted fellow family travel writers so you can research these destinations in greater depth.

1. Las Vegas, Nevada

While it certainly lives up to its reputation as Sin City for adults, Las Vegas offers a multitude of family-friendly offerings and great weather year round. We’ve visited Vegas with our kids multiple times and haven’t run out of things to do and see yet.

What is there to do in Vegas with kids? Hit a magnificent hotel pool like the one at Mandalay Bay, see a kid-friendly show like Blue Man Group, ride roller coasters at New York New York or Circus Circus, or hop aboard a gondola at the Venetian. Vegas is also an ideal home base for outdoor or educational adventures as well, from hiking in Red Rock Canyon to touring Hoover Dam.

2.

Palm Springs, California

Southern Californians have been taking their kids to Palm Springs for many decades, but Palm Springs is a destination that doesn’t immediately occur to a lot of family travelers from farther away. We have visited Palm Springs several times in chillier months with extended family and always have a blast!

With a world-class zoo (the Living Desert), an amazing aviation museum, an aerial tram, and family-friendly luxury resorts, the greater Palm Springs area is an ideal destination for families looking for winter warmth. Don’t miss a classic and wacky California road side attraction, the Cabazon Dinosaurs (made famous in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure). For outdoor hikes and desert exploration, Joshua Tree National Park is within an hour’s drive. Family-friendly hotels and resorts abound in the area, many of which have epic pools.

3. Disney’s Aulani (O’ahu, Hawaii)

Disney in Hawaii? It doesn’t get any more family-friendly for a tropical getaway than that. How do we know? Our family has taken 5 vacations there in the past decade and never tire of all the resort has to offer. Meet Mickey and Stitch, splash in the amazing pools and waterslides, hit the beach, or enjoy a splurge at Aulani like the luau or a character meal. Plus, you can often snag a winter discount as long as you aren’t planning to visit during the peak Christmas and New Year weeks.

Now that family-friendly Southwest Airlines has lots of Hawaii flight service there are flight deals to be had and lots of opportunities to redeem points to save money on other aspects of your trip. Aulani is an expensive destination, so a lot of families split their stay, spending a few days at the property and then a few days elsewhere on O’ahu like on Waikiki Beach.

4. Cancun, Mexico

Speaking of great beaches and pools, Cancun and the Riviera Maya have them too! The area is also home to a multitude of family-friendly resorts. Lots of resorts in this area also have kids clubs, so parents can get a break and a night out while still making family memories. We stayed at the Westin Lagunamar in Cancun a few years ago, which had a kids club for ages 4-12 as well as kitchenettes and laundry in each unit. Consider an excursion to nearby Chichen Itza to add educational value to your tropical getaway.

5. Tucson, Arizona

Tucson flies a bit under the radar as a family travel destination. It’s probably overshadowed by its big name Arizona neighbors like Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Sedona. But it might just be my favorite city in the state. Tucson offers lots of challenging and scenic desert hikes, one of the country’s best air and space museums, Saguaro National Park, and more than its fair share of family-friendly dude ranches.

6. Atlantis, Bahamas

Atlantis in the Bahamas, one of the world’s largest beach resorts, is a perennial favorite of traveling families looking for a warm weather getaway. It is perfect for families with little adrenaline junkies, with lots of crazy waterslides and water sports offered. Think of it as a cruise ship on land. Atlantis is a sprawling complex with many different towers at different price points, so it works for many different budgets too.

7. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

While Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic definitely has a reputation as an adults party spot like Las Vegas, it has a family-friendly side as well. As home to the luxury Nick Resort and the Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana, Punta Cana is seeing a lot more family travelers of late. The area has lots of water parks, water sports, and eco-adventures for kids at a variety of ages and stages. Plus, it can be a really cheap flight for East Coast travelers, especially with my favorite Southwest Airlines now in the mix.

8. Sedona, Arizona

While spring is probably Sedona’s best season, it has a lot to offer in the winter months. It is a tad chillier in December, January, and February than a lot of the rest of the state, but the cold really only hits at night. During the day, plan a variety of hikes with the kids, enjoy a jeep tour in the red rocks (my family recommends Pink Jeep Tours), and check out some of the nearby national monuments like Tuzigoot and Montezuma Castle for some educational opportunities that really engage kids.

9. Miami, Florida

The Miami area offers a wide variety of things to do for families – from beach time to its Seaquarium and Frost Museum of Science to outdoor adventures on the water or in the Everglades. Parents will especially love the swanky hotel options and the culinary choices mixed in with the kid-friendly fun.

Miami is also the perfect jumping off point for a road trip down to the Florida Keys as well. A day trip to the closer spots like Key Largo is entirely possible for a snorkeling adventure.

10. Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Cabo may have the reputation of spring break party town, but the Los Cabos corridor is a great place to take kids. In addition to having a number of very family-friendly resorts (most of which have magnificent pools), there is a lot for kids to do, from sailing to El Arco to ATV tours. It’s has been one of the safest destinations in Mexico for tourists in recent years. It’s also a short trip for West Coasters – from the San Francisco Bay Area, we can get there in 3 hours of flying time, making it entirely doable for a weekend getaway.

11. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Head a bit farther south from Cabo to Puerto Vallarta, another favorite with families that is quite safe for tourists as well. Many of the resorts offer impressive amenities at reasonable prices. The area has a large waterpark, lots of opportunities for ziplining, whale watching (seasonally), and plenty of Mexican food and culture to explore.

12. San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio, Texas can get a rare blast of Arctic air every few years, but the weather is historically pretty mild in winter. Families will enjoy visiting the Alamo and exploring the Riverwalk, as well as experiencing the city’s rich culture and amazing Tex-Mex food. Plus, winter means more reasonable crowds and more available hotel deals!

13. San Diego, California

There’s never a bad time of year to go to San Diego. It makes my top destinations in California for families nearly every season of the year. But it’s particularly great in winter when you might luck into weather in the 70s, as was the forecast when my family visited one MLK weekend. Take your kids to Sea World, Legoland, the world class San Diego Zoo, the Gaslamp Quarter, Coronado Island, and much, much more.

14. Maui, Hawaii

The Hawaiian island of Maui is teeming with kid-friendly resorts, restaurants, and beaches. Families can drive the famous Road to Hana, visit the top of a volcano at Haleakala National Park, or enjoy water activities like snorkeling, parasailing, or whale watching.

For a family-friendly hotel stay, I’d recommend the Hyatt Regency Maui on Ka’anapali Beach, Four Seasons Maui at Wailea, or the Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas. Why? All have great pools, great locations, and kids clubs.

More information: 11 Kid-Friendly Things to do in Maui

15. Turks & Caicos

Turks & Caicos is at the top of a lot of family travelers’ bucket lists because of the Beaches all-inclusive resort located there. The resort has childcare even for babies as young as 6 months old which can well be worth it. But be prepared for sticker shock – it’s a pricey splurge in winter months especially. There are of course a number of other family-friendly resorts on the islands that won’t cost quite as much but that will be a welcome warm weather escape.

No matter where you choose to stay, Turks & Caicos gets high marks for family travelers for being a very safe Caribbean destination. It’s a British protectorate that uses the US dollar for currency which makes a lot of logistics easier for American visitors. Activities like beach hopping and snorkeling will keep most kids active and happy.

More information: Guide to Beaches Turks & Caicos (from FamilyTravelMagazine.com)

16. Great Wolf Lodges (Multiple)

For families looking for some place warm that is a little closer to home, an indoor waterpark hotel like the ones offered by Great Wolf Lodge can be an easy last minute getaway. Even if it is frigid outside, the kids can put on their bathing suits, hit the waterslides, and pretend it isn’t!

Great Wolf has had a lot of new locations popping up in the last few years, so there is one within driving distance of many American families. We have one that opened last year in the San Francisco Bay Area so look for that review coming soon!

More information: Great Wolf Lodge Southern California Review (from GlobalMunchkins.com)

17. Mexico City

While the coastal cities of Mexico like Cabo and Cancun are more often visited by American family travelers, consider Mexico’s capital as well. While it’s a tad colder than some other destinations on this list (the city is located at some elevation means cooler temps at night in winter), the city is rich in history and culture. Families can squeeze in learning at kid-friendly museums and archaeological sites in an urban atmosphere with amazing food sure to suit parents as well.

The Hydrometeorological Center told about the weather for the New Year and January

As the scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia Roman Vilfand said at a press conference, the temperature is expected to be 4-5 degrees above the norm on the night of December 31 to January 1 in the center and north western European Russia. So, according to him, quite comfortable weather is expected in Moscow and the Moscow region on the night of January 1: minus 3-8 degrees. On the afternoon of January 1, a slight thaw will begin, during the day – zero-minus 5 degrees. At the same time, light snow is possible both at night and during the day. But then the temperature starts dropping again. In the first days of the new, 2022, in the capital region minus 2-9, light snow. On the night of January 3 to minus 15 degrees.

A rather mild New Year’s Eve is expected in all central regions, as well as in the north-west of the European territory – in the Leningrad, Pskov and Novgorod regions.

The warmest weather is naturally in the south. In Krasnodar on the night of January 1 plus 3 degrees, on January 1 in the afternoon plus 8 degrees. The same weather will be in Simferopol. In Sochi on New Year’s Eve up to plus 6 degrees, on the afternoon of January 1 – up to plus 10 degrees. The same number in Yalta. But then, in the entire south – from Sochi to the southern coast of Crimea – the temperature will begin to drop. Therefore, vacationers there during the New Year holidays should hardly count on warmth. nine0003

The coldest New Year’s Eve awaits the inhabitants of Yakutia. For example, in the capital of the Republic of Sakha – Yakutsk – on the night of January 1, minus 45. In the afternoon of the 1st, it will not be much warmer. And at the “pole of cold” – in the village of Oymyakon – it’s minus 55.

January, according to Roman Vilfand, is generally expected to be uneven in temperature. In most of Russia, the temperature will be within the climatic norm, but very cold periods are also possible, when the thermometers will drop ten or more degrees below normal. nine0003

The warmest New Year will be in the south. In Sochi and Yalta on the night of December 31 to January 1, plus 6 degrees. In the afternoon of January 1 – plus 10 degrees

It will be especially cold in the Far East. So, a frosty January is expected in the south of the Khabarovsk Territory, in Primorye and in the Amur Region. Warmer than usual weather is predicted in the south-east of the European territory – on the Lower Volga, in the North Caucasus Federal District. In the center, including in the capital region, the weather will be close to normal. But thaws are also possible with zero temperatures and even with its transition to plus, as well as severe frosts, when the thermometers fall below minus 20 degrees. nine0003

There will be more snow in January, but not too much. According to the forecast of the Hydrometeorological Center, in most regions they will fall within the normal range. More than usual snow can attack in the south of Siberia, in the south of Buryatia and in the Trans-Baikal Territory. But in Chukotka, in the Magadan region and in the north of the Khabarovsk Territory, January is predicted to be not very snowy, but frosty.

air and water temperature, what to do on vacation? (season 2022)

Those who prefer to spend holidays abroad must have been to Turkey: beautiful sea, beaches, sun. Impressions are enough for a whole year, until the next summer.

What if you visit this country in January? Will the holiday be just as memorable? And in general, what is winter in Turkish ? Is it worth leaving Russian snowdrifts and blizzards for her sake? Wouldn’t this be a dubious trade-off? nine0003

Weather conditions this month

January here, of course, bears little resemblance to the real Russian winter , but those who love a mild, even climate will like it. Celebrating the New Year at a temperature of +10 or +15 degrees is not a bad idea. You can spend a lot of time outdoors without being afraid, as, for example, in central Russia, to earn a sore throat or freeze your cheeks.

True, there is quite a lot of precipitation: according to statistics, there are a dozen rainy days in the first month of the year. So don’t forget to bring an umbrella with you when you travel. nine0003

In addition, at the beginning of the year it is windy here, especially on the coast, so it would be wiser to choose a hotel located some distance from the sea.

Sometimes January weather brings not the most pleasant surprises . For example, in 2013, heavy snowfalls hit Turkey, and even the airport in Istanbul stopped accepting planes, and classes were canceled in schools. However, this is force majeure, no country is insured against it in the world. But to know that this is possible, even theoretically, every tourist should.

Climate features

The Pontic and Caucasian mountains have a great influence on the climate of Turkey. They protect the country from cold winds from the north and east. The warmest is on the Mediterranean coast, but the humidity there is very high. Most of the precipitation falls on the share of the northern territories, but in the west of the country it is rather dry.

How long does it take to fly to Turkey from major Russian cities? Distance, travel time and much more – here.

And yet the main weather phenomenon of is that sea water in January is several degrees warmer than atmospheric air.

Air and water temperature

January – is the coldest month in these parts, but it is quite predictable – the air temperature remains almost unchanged from the first to the last days of the month. nine0029 Average daily fluctuates between ten and fifteen degrees Celsius, nighttime temperatures are also usually positive – from three to eight degrees.

Water temperature in the sea – 16 – 18 degrees Celsius.

However, few people dare to swim in it. Moreover, January is the time of rains and storms, so the sea is not only cool, but also dangerous.

If it’s a question of principle for you: to be at the sea means to swim, choose a hotel with a swimming pool in advance. In Turkey, they are usually filled with heated sea water, so you can swim at your own pleasure in winter. nine0003

Tourist season in Turkey – when is the best time to go on vacation? Find the answer here.

Holidays in Turkey at this time

The January climate determines the nature of tourists’ rest. This month the focus is on:

  • entertainment ;
  • excursions ;
  • sport ;
  • shopping .

What clothes should I bring?

Unfortunately, you won’t get off with shorts and sarafans in January. Departing in the first month of the year to Turkey, stock up on warm clothes (windproof and waterproof), comfortable shoes.

Also bring clothes that will make you feel comfortable at a party in a restaurant or any other entertainment event.

Swimwear is useful if you plan to use the pool. If you plan to go in for sports, consider clothing for this occasion as well.

Seasonal fruits

Any season country pleases its guests with fruits . Here is what tourists are offered in January:

  • avocados;
  • grenades;
  • oranges;
  • strawberries;
  • grapes;
  • apples.

An interesting fact: about five hundred varieties of apples are grown here. Be sure: you will definitely have a chance to try something new for yourself, never before presented on Russian shelves.

The first strawberries appear in Turkey in January. And here they begin to collect the most delicious oranges of the Washington variety. The pomegranate season ends, but in January they are the most delicious – tart and sweet, reminiscent of young wine in color and aroma. nine0003

Another nice moment : prices for avocados (if you go to the market for fruit, you will see for yourself) will surprise you with their affordability – at the beginning of the year, their cost is reduced by about half.

What to do and what to do on vacation?

The country actively develops recreational activities . In winter it is a worthy alternative to the beach and the sea. The most promising is the thermal resort of Pamukkale, its hot springs are saturated with calcium oxide, which is very useful for healing the body. nine0003

Tourists come to Kangal resort for various healing procedures. The water in its springs is rich in selenium and zinc. People come here with dermatological problems.

But traditional Turkish baths, or hammams, will benefit both sick and healthy people, many baths use the healing water of hot springs.

Alpine skiing is successfully cultivated in the east of the country. Tourist centers with excellent, well-equipped trails have been built there. And the weather for skiing in January is just perfect. nine0003

Be sure to spend a couple or three days on excursions. You can visit the capital of Turkey, Istanbul, you can go to the Bosphorus Strait – a kind of sea gate connecting the Mediterranean and Black Seas. And also on the excursion map of the country are the ancient cities of Olympus and Kaunos, the cave of Zeus, the castle of St. Peter and many other interesting places.

back to contents ↑

Where is warmer: the warmest place in the country

The warmest Turkish resort is Alanya. The air temperature during the day reaches 17 degrees there, and at night it is only four degrees less. nine0003

Literally “they breathe down the back of her head” Bodrum (16 and 14 degrees respectively), Marmaris, Belek, Kemer. But in Erzurum you will find many features similar to the Russian winter, however, it is rather mild, and such features rarely occur in Russia.

How many degrees are there in Antalya and other popular resorts?

Although Antalya is not included in the list of the “hottest” January resorts (14 degrees during the day and 5 at night), but the sun is very active here , and if you do not use a protective cream, you can get sunburned even in January. nine0003

Alpine skiers coming to Turkey should also remember about the treachery of the sun: in the resort of Saklikent near Antalya there are wonderful tracks for skiers and snowboarders and wonderful sunny weather.
