Trying to book a holiday for next year, we don’t want anywhere that’s too hot, anywhere over 30c is definitely out. So we’ve found a fantastic hotel in Majorca but wondering just how warm it’s likely to be in May. As I’ve said we don’t want it too hot but we do want to be able to go on the beach without jumpers! If Majorca isn’t going to be warm enough any other sensible suggestions for a family travelling with very young children.

We went a couple of times in may when dd was little. The first time was lovely, warm but not boiling. The following year we went for a week and it rained every day ( really rained, not showers). Personally I wouldnt go again that early in the year.

Used to go very end of may, pre DCs as Dh had odd leave that put mayday onto late spring bank holiday.

Usally warm enough for beach, sea and pool. Sometimes a bit windy. Never got rain.

Hi, we went this year at Spring Bank. The first three days were cloudy and cold. MY Mum ended up buying a coat. Then the sun came out and it was lovely.
I would definitely go back at that time of year. After one week I came home with a lovely suntan.

Where is the great hotel you are thinking of ?

May is close to the summer solstice and rays will be strong. If it is warm enough to take your coat off – the two are not related!

I would say Majorca would be pleasant, but not boiling. We went May half term one year, and I found myself by the pool in a cozzy thinking “Hmm, I could do with an extra layer!” I’m sure it varies, but you might be better venturing further South.

We’ve been to both Majorca and Ibiza in May with small kids. It’s always been warm for us – no problem swimming or spending time at the beach. I’ve needed a light hoodie/ cardigan some nights.

We went to Majorca second week of June a couple of years ago. It was pleasant, but not roasting and the pool was a bit chilly. I would say that it could be hit or miss in May. For more guaranteed hot weather i would go to the Canaries.

Algarve is perfect in late May. Not too hot but definitely lovely swimming weather.

We went 1st week of may and it was a bit cool the first couple of days then warned up towards the end.
When we arrived the taxi driver said it had rained for a week previously and was due to rain all week again

We went at the end of May this year and we hadn’t taken enough warm clothes with us. It wasn’t ‘warm you through to the bones’ temperatures. Although all of Europe was rubbish that week anyway, it was enough for me to rule it out as an early summer sun at half term destination.

As an alternative to the Canaries, I think I’d look at Cyprus or Greece too.

I think the Med in May this year was cooler than usual. We went to Croatia at spring bank half term and the temperature struggled to get into the 20s. The previous time we went the temperature was 25 – 30 degrees.

We had a fortnight in Majorca at the end of May many years ago. We had a lot of rain, but it was localised and because we had hired a car we just chased the sun around the island. It was warm enough to sunbathe during the day, but you needed a cardigan in the evening.

Thanks for the replies, we think we will chance it, so fingers crossed for a bit of sun and a bit of warmth.

I wouldn’t compare this year with a normal year. Even here in France the end of May can often be scorching hot, but this year we still had our jumpers on.

My friend goes to Majorca for the May half term every year and they normally have fab weather.

It can be mixed. We went there for two weeks (mid-end May) and had one week high twenties and could swim in the sea and one week rain and 17 degrees (that was the second week when there were lots of English children on half term break).

We will go next year May half term and will go to either Cyprus, Sicily or Rhodes, longer flight but the weather will be more stable.

Hottest places in Spain in May

By Mark Hodson, Sunday Times Travel Writer

May is the month when Spain switches from spring to early summer. You can expect long days of sunshine and – if you go south – sunbathing weather. This is arguably a perfect time to visit, with few crowds and low prices, particularly as tour operators launch their summer season and offer price cuts to fill beds and aircraft seats.

It’s prime time for a city break with Madrid offering temperatures of 25ºC and an average nine hours of daily sunshine. Barcelona is a little cooler at 22ºC because of the sea breezes, but you should see eight hours of sun. If you really want to turn up the temperature dial, head south to Seville which offers 28ºC and 10 hours of sunshine each day. Arguably this is the last month before the summer heat makes sightseeing uncomfortable. There’s a huge contrast with the north coast where Bilbao sees only 20ºC with five hours of sun.

If you’re looking for a beach holiday, the Costa del Sol and the Costa de la Luz are the hottest places to stay in Spain in May. Malaga will be around 25ºC with Marbella around 24ºC, each with 9-10 hours of daily sunshine. If you’re looking for a classy all-inclusive hotel, we recommend the IKOS Andalusía, part of a successful group that came out of Greece.

If you prefer the idea of self-catering, check out these rental villas in Andalucia most of which have a private pool. All should be ideally placed for good weather in May.

Another option is the Balearic Islands where the summer season will be getting under way. It’s a lovely time to be in Mallorca with temperatures around 23ºC and nine hours of daily sun. You can spend the morning sightseeing or walking and the afternoon on the beach. Another option is Ibiza where you can enjoy the countryside, villages and sandy coves before the summer crowds descend. The other island with sensational beaches is Menorca. If you only have a few days, I’d recommend Palma, the lovely capital of Mallorca.

If you like to get active, try one of these independent walking holidays that will allow you discover the unspoiled countryside and hidden trails of some of Spain’s prettiest regions. And Flavours Holidays has group trips to Andalucia based around cooking, Pilates or painting.

May half-term week is a popular time for families to visit Spain. The weather will almost certainly be hot and sunny, but without the scorching heat and humidity of July and August.

Catalonia has lovely small sandy beaches, mountains and interesting sights, from Barcelona to Dalí’s Theatre-Museum in Figueres. You can rent a villa or take an independent cycling holiday along the Catalan coast. In the stylish beach resort of Sitges near Barcelona you can rent one of these family villas. Ask about pool heating before you book.

In the Balearics, the luxury Nobu Ibiza Bay Hotel near Ibiza Town is aimed squarely at families, while the five-star 7Pines Resort Ibiza welcomes children and boasts a world-class spa.
