The weather in Tenerife is generally pretty good all year round with warm summers and fairly mild winters. Tenerife, like all the Canary Islands enjoys a subtropical climate and little rainfall for most of the year.
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands in terms of land mass, population and the amount of visitors each year. It’s estimated that over 5 million tourists on average pack they suitcases and jet off to this beautiful volcanic island every year. Perhaps the main reason for the high level of tourism is the excellent climate and weather in Tenerife. Most of the island enjoys average temperature of around 26 Celsius during summer.
The winter average temperature is as high as 17 Celsius and does not tend to drop much lower. The few exceptions where the high altitude will make temperatures considerably cooler are the Anaga Mountains in the northeast of the island and Teide Volcano in the centre.
The summer weather in Tenerife is typically not as hot as some of the other islands or areas of the Spanish mainland. The temperature begins to increase in May before gradually cooling down towards the end of September. It’s important to bear in mind that the averages will frequently exceed 30 Celsius during the hotter months. One of the leading Spanish weather authorities has actually recorded a high of 42.6 Celsius previously in August. The Atlantic Ocean tends to offer a cooling breeze during the hotter summer months to ease some of the discomfort.
Summer Weather In Tenerife
June is the start of the summer season in Tenerife as the temperature increases again. June starts off relatively hot and gradually gets hotter towards the end of the month. The average daily temperature is around 26. 6 Celsius but like May, there will be many days that exceed 30 Celsius. The top temperature recorded in June is 37.1 Celsius in Santa Cruz. There is hardly any rainfall throughout June so you will probably not see more than 1 day unless you are unfortunate. The sea temperature will now be a warm 22 Celsius and Tenerife will be getting some 10 hours of sunshine per day.
July can seem just as hot as August for long spells of the month and there is virtually no rainfall. The average temperature will now be around 29 Celsius most days, many more will be around 35 Celsius. July has recorded a temperature high of a sweltering 42.9 Celsius previously. This month can seem particularly uncomfortable if you are not used to the high temperature. It’s advisable to make sure you have some sort of air-conditioning to make sleeping easier. The sea temperature will remain around 22 Celsius and there will be around 10 hours of sunshine.
August is almost a mirror of July apart from more days exceeding 35 Celsius. The average daily temperature is now around 30 Celsius. Like July, there is precious little rainfall around so you will be lucky to see even 1 day of rain. The sea temperature will now be approaching a warm 23 Celsius. There may be slightly more hours of sunshine than July so it’s still a good idea to make sure you have access to some fans or air-conditioning.
Autumn Weather in Tenerife
The Weather in Tenerife for most of autumn will see much the same as summer but there will normally be much more rainfall. September in particular can still seem extremely hot, especially at the beginning of the month. The temperature will gradually decrease throughout September but will still be warm enough for the whole of autumn.
September is technically the end of summer but the hot temperature and climate will be around for a while yet. Although the temperature is beginning to drop, September is very likely to see plenty of days topping 30 Celsius. The average daily temperature is now 28 Celsius. Tenerife South Airport has previously recorded a temperature high of 41. 8 Celsius. September will probably see more rain but this is unlikely to be more than 3 or 4 days. Surprisingly, the sea temperature rises to a year high level of 24 Celsius during September.
October is when the temperature begins to cool considerably and there will be more days of rain during this month. The average temperature will drop to around 25 Celsius and we will probably see around 6 days of rainfall. A temperature high of 38.1 Celsius has been recorded in October so expect plenty of hot days. Like September, the sea temperature is still a pleasant 24 Celsius but the hours of sunshine will drop to around 7. The evening temperature will also begin to decrease as October reaches it’s conclusion.
November sees a significant increase in rainfall as the temperature begins to decrease. The temperature will probably not drop much below 20 Celsius but the rainfall tends to double in comparison to October. November has recorded a high temperature of 34 Celsius previously but it’s unlikely you will experience many days above 25 Celsius. The sea temperature will now drop to around 22 Celsius and the hours of sunshine will be around 7. The evening temperature will now begin to feel much cooler than previous months.
Winter Weather In Tenerife
Although the temperature is beginning to drop as we approach winter, the weather in Tenerife is still pretty good. November – March is when there is significantly more rainfall. It’s interesting that most tend to favour the winter months to take their holidays. The temperature never really drops much below 17 Celsius but November, December and January are the coldest and the wettest months in Tenerife.
December sees far more rainfall than any other month on average as the temperature continues to drop. The temperature during the day will still be fairly warm at around 18 Celsius but you could see some 8 days of rainfall. The precipitation levels are much higher in December so expect to see plenty of rain when it arrives. The hours of sunshine will reduce further to 6 hours and the sea temperature will drop to 21 Celsius. December is the beginning of winter in Tenerife so expect to see the evening temperature dropping accordingly.
January is probably only marginally colder than December but it’s still considered the coldest month in Tenerife. January is a very popular month for tourism but there is still a fair bit of rainfall around. The average temperature most days will be around 17 Celsius but the evenings will seem much colder. You can expect 6 hours of sunshine per day in January and sea temperatures of 20 Celsius.
February is very similar to January in many respects, the temperature will be around the same and so will the expected rainfall. February has an average daily temperature of around 17.5 Celsius and you can expect around 7 days of rainfall. The sea level drops to around 19 Celsius but the hours of sunshine increases to 8 hours per day as we say goodbye to winter.
Spring Weather In Tenerife
The weather in Tenerife in spring is generally perfect with the temperatures continuing to rise after the colder winter months.
March sees the temperature begin to rise again as we enter the spring months in Tenerife. The daily average temperature will increase to 18 Celsius and there will be less rainfall around. March has a recorded temperature high of 35.2 Celsius but most days will be in the low twenties as things warm up. March sees 8 hours of sunshine per day and the sea temperature is 19 Celsius. The weather in Tenerife in March is pleasant as it is for most of the spring months.
April sees the temperature rising marginally from the previous month but there will be significantly less rainfall. The temperature is now creeping up to around 20 Celsius but you can expect plenty to be as high as 25 Celsius. April has a recorded temperature high of 35.2 Celsius in Santa Cruz. The hours of sunshine in April will remain at 8 but the sea temperature will rise to 20 Celsius. The evenings will also be warming up now in preparation for the warmer months.

The best vacation in the resort
A wonderful resort that opens the season in May, hospitably opens its virtual doors to all vacationers. Tenerife in May warms up from the bright and almost constant sun. This month, precipitation may fall, but not more than a third of the month.
According to meteorologists, May is usually a sunny month, and it can rain for about a week, no more. The air temperature rises to + 20 + 23 ° C, and on some days + 25 + 26 ° C.
However, the earth has not yet warmed up enough, and therefore in the late evening and at night it is only +10+14°C. As for the water in the sea, it all depends on how warm the whole month turned out to be, but it is already warm, it allows you to swim and its temperature reaches +17 + 20 °C.
Such water, of course, is good only for hardened people and for fans of sea swimming, but there are enough such lovers on the beaches of Tenerife. There are even more on the beaches of those who like to sunbathe near the water under the mild gentle sun. There is always an opportunity to bask in the sun on the beaches of Tenerife hotels, here you will be given sun loungers or deck chairs, if you want, then umbrellas.
In Tenerife, the weather is mostly dry in May, with more chances of rain in the north. Tyutchevskoe “I love a thunderstorm in early May” – very suitable for the climate of the resort. A fast-passing thunderstorm brings incredible ozone freshness and only improves the overall atmosphere.
The wind subsides by the end of the month. Humidity is quite moderate – 64%. In general, the weather in May is comfortable, there are fewer unpleasant winds, as well as rainy days. Therefore, you can plan a vacation not only on the beach, but also trips to historical sites or other places of entertainment.
On Tenerife in May, you will find a varied holiday in amusement parks, life in nightclubs and institutions, excursions and festivals, and the most diverse beach holiday in the most picturesque places on the island.
Our travel company Tez Tour offers the most interesting places for recreation, where you can relax and have fun. Children will be especially pleased, who can be taken to Loro Park, Siam Park, Aqualand, Orlov Park, Jardine Botanico, Monkey Park, Ostrich Farm and many others.

Tenerife in May is the season of carnivals and festivals. The most grandiose of them is the day of the Canary Islands. For several days, various cultural events, unusual and colorful performances, concerts of folk groups and professionals are held.
The celebration ends with a three-hour fireworks show. Our travel agency Tez Tour offers an amazing and unforgettable trip to this resort paradise, where you and your whole family can have a great rest and gain strength for the whole year.
Holidays in Tenerife are interesting in any month. But still in high season
many experienced tourists avoid coming here. Crowds of tourists
Crowded beaches and high prices are not to everyone’s taste. Reasons to go on tour in Tenerife
several in May.
First, undoubtedly, low prices. After the tourist peak, some hotels stop working for a while,
and others significantly reduce the cost of their services in order to recoup their work at the expense of more guests.
Tours in May in Tenerife are a great choice for those who like to save money.
Hotels in Tenerife are of an excellent class, there are representatives of well-known chains.
In hotels, there are often animators with a program for kids and adults.
Secondly, a pleasant atmosphere of relaxation. No noisy crowds of tourists, queues to monuments and museums,
on the streets you can meet only local residents – you can relax and spend your holidays in almost complete seclusion.
Third, the entertainment program. Rare resorts in the off-season completely “die out”, they become centers of cultural life.
Tenerife in May is no exception. At this time, various festivals, concerts, exhibitions are held here. Museums and attractions also work on schedule.
A tour to Tenerife in May will especially appeal to older people.

May. Couple
Spain, Tenerife
We rested on the island of Tenerife in May 2014. We were afraid that it would be cold, and we would not be able to fully relax. But our fears were dispelled as soon as we got to Tenerife. It was hot summer warm weather, except in the evening it was cool, and we put on sweaters.
We stopped in the southern part of Tenerife, in the resort of Las Americas, the most popular and colorful resort. The volcano mountain protects this resort from winds and rains, so it is always warmer here than in the northern part of the island.
There are different beaches here. Near our hotel was a beach with white and black sand. We have seen almost white beaches and completely black volcanic sand. The beaches in Tenerife are works of art of nature itself, the locals are proud of them, and each of them has its own name. Merchants walk on the beach and sell fruits, but they are much more expensive, it is better to go to the store.
The resort of Las Americas has a very developed infrastructure, there are many boutiques, shops and entertainment centers. While shopping, my wife noticed that there were cheap cosmetics and perfumes. Naturally, we bought several pieces for my wife at once. The only nice thing is that in most boutiques you can bargain well.
From excursions we took a hike to the Teide volcano, to the water park and Loro park. In Loro Park, we watched several interesting shows and performances: parrot shows, tricks with trained dolphins, walruses, seals and hefty killer whales. We also visited the neighboring island called La Gomera, from which Christopher Columbus set off to discover America.
The rest turned out to be full and met all our expectations. We brought home a great mood and a bunch of photos!

May. With family
Spain, Tenerife island
Rested with my wife in Tenerife in May last year. We thought it would be very hot, but the climate turned out to be very mild and comfortable. For several days the water in the ocean was cold, due to the current, at that time we rented a car and went to explore the island on our own. Car rental cost us 50 euros per day, by the way the car was good, almost new. The roads are excellent, there are signs and markings everywhere, everything is clear, so when we rented a car, we didn’t even bother without a navigator.
We rested in the south of the island, but after traveling we liked the north more. There are fewer Russian and picturesque places. Were Loro Parque, loved it! Tourists who come here with a guide on an excursion run in a hurry to have time to see everything. We calmly watched all the animal shows, walked up, took a bunch of good photos. You can easily buy a ticket to the park at the entrance.
In the south of Tenerife, there are many restaurants, a pedestrian promenade where you can walk, sit, watch a stunning sunset.
Tenerife is a very romantic and peaceful resort. There is no rush and no fuss. We really enjoyed staying here.
The end of spring is the beginning of the holiday season. It is already warm, but there are still few tourists. My husband and I were there in the second half of May, the average temperature is 22°C during the day, 16°C at night. It rained only once (we rested for two weeks). As for swimming, the water warms up no more than 19 ° C, we swam. But the coast here is quite rocky. Playa de la Arena is a nice beach with black volcanic healing sand.
What to bring
Taking into account that it can be cool at night, be sure to take a thin jacket or sweatshirt, and appropriate shoes. But don’t forget sunscreen, glasses and a hat.
Cultural program
In order to enjoy the beauties of Tenerife, we rented a car. We visited:
- Mount Teide – the highest point of the island.
- Pyramids of Guimar – according to legend, they were built by the Guanche tribe from volcanic ash. There are 6 of them in total, and they are in the form of steps.
From outdoor activities: you can go water skiing, scuba diving or visit Siam Park.
Also in May, there are two celebrations on the island: the Feast of the Cross (near Santa Cruz de Tenerife), and at the end – a three-hour fireworks display in Los Realejos; day of the Canary Islands (you can try authentic local dishes, watch local entertainment – the pastor’s jump).
Why you should go to Tenerife in May
This is the best time to explore the island’s sights and enjoy the scenery. And there really is something to see!
Tenerife
is one of the most popular island resorts in Spain. It is loved by many tourists, thanks to the excellent climate that allows you to relax at any time of the year, as well as a wide variety of beaches, entertainment and excursion programs.
