Where is hot in May? Holiday destinations for May sun

Don’t fancy gambling on beer-garden weather this May bank holiday? Us neither. Which is why we’ve desperately been searching for places that are hot in May, so we can guarantee a bit of spring sunshine (and a summer base tan). If you’re also hoping for some early sun this year, here are 8 destinations that should be hot this May. You’re welcome.

Crete, Greece (temperature highs of 24°C)

A modest four hour plane journey from London, Crete is the perfect quick fix for all your vacation needs. With the sun shining for (on average) 10 hours a day, there’s time to do it all: from the Palace of Knossos, an ancient archaeological site steeped in Greek history, to the Samaria Gorge, one of Europe’s longest (and most stunning) canyons. Of course, if you prefer to grab a floppy hat and mooch down to the beach, there’s plenty of hidden gems to choose from. Have a look at our guide of what to do, where to stay and the best places to eat there.

Fes el-Bali, Morocco (temperature highs of 26°C)

Regarded as Morocco’s ‘Spiritual Capital’, Fes el-Bali is a world heritage site famed for its legendary Medina with over 9000 meandering passageways to explore. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you learn to navigate the intricate web of alleyways. Each one reveals something impossibly beautiful: whether it’s fresh batches of pancakes slathered in beetroot jam (surprisingly delicious, trust) or ancient walls strewn with awe-inspiring artwork/ market stalls/craftwork. As the largest urban car-free area in the world, you’re going to need your comfy shoes for this one. For more information on Fez, check out our guide of what to do, where to stay and the best places to eat.

Cannes, France (temperature highs of 20°C)

With the legendary Cannes Film Festival taking place in May, there’s never been a better time to channel your inner diva (oversized sunnies and all). If you don’t manage to walk the red carpet yourself, there’s still plenty of glamour to soak up: from swanky rooftop bars to screenings of classic Cannes films on the beach. If Cannes’ drama sounds a bit much, why not head down to Agay? A 50-minute coastal drive from Cannes is all it takes to visit this sleepy yet spirited harbouring town. And while 20 degrees might not scream bikini, it’s definitely shorts and T-shirt weather – and who could argue with that?

manjikGetty Images

Havana, Cuba (temperature highs of 31°C)

Find out why half of Camila Cabeyo’s heart is in Havana (ooh na na) by booking a salacious escape to the north coast of Cuba. Sit back in a beautifully restored, vintage sports car as you tour the palm tree-laden landscape in search of the finest cuban rum. Be sure to leave time for snacking along the way as Havana is legendary for street food. We’re talking Elote (grilled corn on the cob with a variety of delish toppings), fried plantain, paella, and of course, churros. Yum.

xavierarnauGetty Images

Palermo, Italy (temperature highs of 22°C)

The capital of Sicily, Palermo is a deliciously forbidden slice of Southern Italy. While the temperatures aren’t blistering, they’re still perfect for wandering along the Mercato di Ballarò without breaking too much of a sweat. Embrace the Sicilian way of life by dining alfresco, sampling Italian specialities, such as Caponata, and mingling with sociable locals who are sure to provide you with enough expert recommendations to sustain you for the rest of your trip. For more information on Sicily, check out our guide of what to do, where to stay and the best places to eat.

Barbados, The Caribbean (temperature highs of 31°C)

Known simply as ‘paradise’, there’s not much more you can add about this stunning (and notoriously hot) Caribbean island – other than it’s a great holiday destination. Whether you want to perfect your tan on the white sands of the (aptly named) Paradise Beach or go humpback whale spotting at Animal Flower Cave, Barbados has got you covered. As it’s the last month of Barbados’ dry season, May is the perfect time to discover what all the fuss is about.

Paxos

  • Temperature: 23º
  • Sunshine: 9 hours
  • Rainy days: 8
  • Flight Time: 3 hours (further travel required)

First off is the Greek island of Paxos, the smallest of the Ionian islands. It’s so small in fact (just 10km by 4km!) that it doesn’t have an airport and travellers must instead fly to Corfu and get a ferry or hydrofoil to Paxos. Don’t let this little extra leg put you off though, Paxos is as picturesque as it is tranquil and it’s well worth going the extra mile to get there.

A well-kept secret among sailors, this tiny island has an abundance of secluded beaches whilst the charming towns of Gaios (where you’ll find the port), Lakka and Longos boast plenty of traditional tavernas offering everything from seafood to Greek mezze.

>> More Info

Menorca

  • Temperature: 22º
  • Sunshine: 9 hours
  • Rainy days: 4
  • Flight Time: 2 hours 20 mins

Known for being one of the most relaxed of the Balearic Islands, Menorca boasts many sandy beaches and bays perfect for families and couples alike. Fortunately, Menorca is mild enough in May that you can hike (or drive) up Mount Toro — which is more of a hill than a mountain — to see the some of the best views that the island has to offer.

Up here you’ll also find the stunning catholic church of Santuari de la Mare de Déu del Toro (Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Bull). Whilst active travellers will enjoy a walk along one of S’Albufera Nature Reserve’s many hiking trails, there are plenty of beautiful beaches for the sunseekers that simply want to relax.

>> More Info

Halkidiki

  • Temperature: 23º
  • Sunshine: 11 hours
  • Rainy days: 4
  • Flight Time: 3 hours 30 mins

In mainland Greece, you’ll find Halkidiki, home to a large peninsula that resembles a hand with three fingers, although Greeks often refer to these as ‘legs’. This historic region has plenty to offer its visitors, whether you’re looking for culture or somewhere to simply unwind.

Halkidiki is not only the birthplace of Aristotle but also home to the ancient city of Olynthus, known for its well-preserved mosaic floors. Meanwhile, Kassandra (the most westerly peninsula) has a more modern and touristy feel with many resorts, bars and nightclubs.

St Vincent & The Grenadines

  • Temperature: 31º
  • Sunshine: 9 hours
  • Rainy days: 11
  • Flight Time: 12 hours

Looking further afield to the Caribbean, the stunning island nation of St Vincent & The Grenadines is a paradise that remains unspoilt by mass tourism, making it the perfect getaway for anyone looking for a relaxing holiday. The main island of St. Vincent is blessed with some of the best beaches in the region, without the crowds that you might find at better-known Caribbean destinations.

Here you can go whale-watching and explore the La Soufrière National Park, home to a volcano, which stands 1,234 meters above sea level, making it the highest peak in the country.

Sardinia

  • Temperature: 22º
  • Sunshine: 9 hours
  • Rainy days: 9
  • Flight Time: 2 hours 30 mins

With almost 2,000km of coastline and a rugged inner-landscape marked with hiking trails, the Italian island of Sardinia makes for a wonderful May holiday destination for both beach-lovers and intrepid explorers.

Dotted all around this island you’ll find the ruins of more than 7,000 nuraghe, ancient structures that are believed to have been built in the Bronze Age — the oldest of which (Su Nuraxi in Barumini) dates back to 1500 B.C. If you’re looking for culture and heritage you might also like to visit the Temple of Antas or the National Archaeology Museum in Cagliari.

With so much to offer, we’d suggest hiring a car and exploring as much of the island as possible. There are also many golden-sandy beaches to visit as well, so be sure to save some time for sunbathing.

Santorini

  • Temperature: 23º
  • Sunshine: 12 hours
  • Rainy days: 3
  • Flight Time: 4 hours

Of all the hot destinations in May, the Greek island of Santorini is not one to miss. This volcanic island has been shaped by a devastating eruption that took place more than 3,000 years ago, which left in its wake an underwater caldera (crater) which you can still see from the island’s many cliffs.

Now, however, Santorini is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, known for its luxurious hotels and whitewashed villages. To witness one of the best sunsets on the planet, head to Oia and for unusual volcanic grey-sand beaches, head to Kamari.

Costa Brava

  • Temperature: 22º
  • Sunshine: 9 hours
  • Rainy days: 5
  • Flight Time: 2 hours

Between Barcelona and the south of France lies Costa Brava. This stunning strip of Catalonian coastline stretches for 60km and has something for every kind of traveller — whether you’re visiting with children or going on a strictly grown-ups getaway.

Platja D’Aro and Santa Susanna make for popular family resorts, whilst Lloret de Mar has a vibrant nightlife for anyone looking to let their hair down. If however, you’re seeking some peace and quiet, you might opt to stay in the more relaxed parts of the coast such as Pineda de Mar or Malgrat de Mar.

>> More Info

Samoa

  • Temperature: 29º
  • Sunshine: 7 hours
  • Rainy days: 13
  • Flight Time: 20 hours

In the great expanse of the Pacific Ocean, you’ll find Samoa, a paradise nation consisting of two main islands, Upolu and Savaii. Although getting there is quite a journey, the experiences that these islands have to offer will make for the holiday of a lifetime — not to mention their sheer beauty.

As well as gorgeous beaches and an abundance of marine life, Samoa’s internal landscape is well worth exploring. With so much to see and do, this destination is perfect for anyone who is looking to do more than simply lay on the beach.

>> More Info

Guatemala

  • Temperature: 27º
  • Sunshine: 6 hours
  • Rainy days: 8
  • Flight Time: 14 hours 30 mins

If you’re looking to take the road less travelled, a trip to the Central American country of Guatemala will be right up your street. This fascinating destination on the southern border of Mexico has so far managed to stay out of the limelight, which is all part of its charm.

As well as a rich heritage and many ancient temples dotted around the country, Guatemala has a spectacular and diverse landscape for visitors to explore, from its many volcanoes (37 in total) to its luscious jungles.

>> More Info

Texas

  • Temperature: 29º
  • Sunshine: 8 hours
  • Rainy days: 8
  • Flight Time: 10 hours

Texas is, without a doubt, one of the cornerstones of America’s iconography. From its rolling plains and roaming bison — which still live in some of the state’s parks and reserves — to its cowboys and their rodeos.

As the second-largest state in the US, here you can live like a cowboy and explore the modern metropolises of Dallas, Houston and Austin, the latter of which is widely regarded as the live music capital of the world, perfect for a bit of honky-tonk!

nine0000 Where to go to the beach in May

Tips for tourists> where to
go to rest on the sea> to the beach in May

In order to choose a beach holiday in May, you need to think about how far you agree to fly.
In the near directions, water and air for a beach holiday in the month of May do not yet have time to warm up to the desired temperatures.
In the countries of the Mediterranean coast, the weather will allow you to get a good tan, enjoy plenty of warmth, take a break from the long Russian winter under the warm sun, you can swim, but without much pleasure. Look out for hotels with heated pools. nine0003

Where is the warmest water in the Mediterranean in May

The Mediterranean begins to warm up from its eastern part. The hot influence of Asia and Africa, and the absence of cold sea currents in this region of the Mediterranean, have an effect.

The warmest water in May is on the southern coast of Turkey, closer to the Antalya region, and off the coast of Cyprus.

But in the western part of the Mediterranean Sea, cold currents coming from the Atlantic Ocean dominate, so the temperature off the coast of Spain, Italy, Malta reaches only 17-18 degrees. The water is especially cold in northern Spain off the Costa Brava, so the month of May cannot be recommended for those who want to swim with pleasure. nine0291
The Black Sea in May is also not very comfortable for swimming.

Holidays on the coasts of the Indian Ocean, Atlantic and Pacific Ocean in May
