In this section, you will find the best places to stay in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, in order of popularity. Also, I’ll tell you about my experience staying in the area, the hotels we stayed in, and the most typical things to do there.

Luckily, hotels in Lanzarote are considerably cheaper compared to the other Canary Islands, so you can stay in a great hotel without having to pay a lot of money.

1. Playa Blanca, the best place to stay in Lanzarote

Playa Blanca is the best area to stay in Lanzarote because it has everything: beautiful beaches, nightlife, shopping, attractions, and good restaurants. I also consider this place an ideal area if you want to stay by Timanfaya National Park and the popular Papagayo beach, since both attractions are less than 20 minutes away by car.

In addition, the ferries to Fuerteventura depart from this city, which is why we stayed here for one night. We truly regret that we didn’t spend more time here. Even traveling in January, Playa Blanca had a lot of activity and a great atmosphere, so it isn’t surprising that it’s one of the most popular places to find accommodation in Lanzarote. We stayed here for two nights during our trip, and I think that, because of its location, it’s one of the best options.

If you want to discover the history and culture of Lanzarote, I recommend you look at hotels in Arrecife, since the city hasn’t lost its seafaring character or its historical essence as a defensive fortress; and there are tone of things to do in Arrecife.

4. Arrecife, one of the best locations to stay in Lanzarote

You can visit the Castillo de San Gabriel and the Puente de las Bolas, visit the neighborhood of San Ginés and see its natural pools, and go to El Reducto beach.

This town is one of my favorite places to look for accommodation in Lanzarote, since it belongs to Chinijo Natural Park. Its unique location means you can see beautiful landscapes from here. Everything is charming in La Caleta: its white houses, the Risco de Famara, its sunsets…

If you decide to find your holiday apartment in Lanzarote in Caleta de Famara, you can also enjoy the fresh fish they serve in the town’s restaurants. You can even visit Famara beach, which is perfect for relaxing and watching surfers catch waves (or doing it yourself).

Haría is located in the north of Lanzarote, very close to Órzola, and is the best option if you are looking for charming accommodation in Lanzarote.

We stayed here the day before visiting La Graciosa since the ferry departs from Órzola, where there are very few accommodations.

The attraction of this place is that it is the greenest area of Lanzarote, and it is here where most of the island’s native flora grows. In addition, the municipality of Haría is also known as the “Valley of a Thousand Palms.” I recommend seeing the palm grove that gives this area its name from the lookout point “Mirador de Los Helechos”. The views are beautiful.

6. Haría, an interesting option for sleeping in Lanzarote, Canary Islands

If you decide to look for a hotel in Lanzarote in the Haría area, you will be close to the César Manrique Museum, the Cueva de Los Verdes, the Jameos del Agua, the Mirador del Río, and other main attractions on the island. In addition, it’s the best place to learn about the artisan and manufacturing tradition of Lanzarote.

If you decide to do what we did and, instead of staying in a single hotel for your entire stay, change accommodation, stay in Haría for at least one day.

7. Arrieta, an area where I recommend staying in Lanzarote

Not far away is Arrieta, a very beautiful town that we thought of as a place to stay in Lanzarote but, in the end, we decided against. However, the town has a lot of charm, and if you can’t find accommodation in Haría, I consider it a great place to look for a hotel in Lanzarote.

7. Arrieta, an area where I recommend staying in Lanzarote

I recommend you stay here if you want to taste the authentic gastronomy of the Canary Islands and you want to rest and relax. You can visit La Garita beach, which is perfect for surfing, El Charchón, and Casa Juanita.

If you want to sleep in a tranquil place in Lanzarote, these are the accommodations in Arrieta that I recommend:

8. Staying in La Graciosa, a recommended experience in Lanzarote

La Graciosa has been independent of Lanzarote since 2018, but if you go to Lanzarote, don’t miss a visit to La Graciosa. Also, if you have the opportunity, spend a night there so you have time to get to know it thoroughly.

To get to La Graciosa, you will have to take a ferry that departs from Órzola and goes to Caleta de Sebo. We visited La Graciosa during our trip to the Canary Islands, and we fell in love with this small island that belongs to the Chinijo archipelago.

8. Staying in La Graciosa, a recommended experience in Lanzarote

When you visit, I recommend going to Las Conchas beach, climbing the Montaña Bermeja, photographing the Arcos de Los Caletones, and diving in the incredible waters.

If you decide to spend the night here, you have to know that apartments in La Graciosa, Lanzarote, tend to fill up quite quickly, so I recommend booking ASAP. Camping is another option and the one we chose. To get the camping permit for La Graciosa check this website.

It also has other advantages- it’s faster and convenient because everything is managed at the same time and through the same intermediary.

In any case, even if it seems cheaper at first, I always recommend comparing the total price of the flight plus hotel package to Lanzarote with the total of buying things separately to choose the best option. We always use Kiwi.com to check the price of flights.

Airbnb in Lanzarote

If you prefer to stay in an apartment in Lanzarote, I recommend you look at Airbnb. We have used this website on several occasions, and although we have had some bad experiences, we have had many more good ones, so it is an option that I also recommend. To avoid unpleasant surprises, always read the reviews of other travelers who have stayed in the place.

I consider renting apartments in Lanzarote a very good option, especially in places where there are few hotels, where you may find an Airbnb in Lanzarote. If you don’t have an Airbnb account yet, you will get $50 off your first trip if you sign in now.

Best campsites in Lanzarote

Camping in Lanzarote is also a great option, although it is only available during the summer months (which is why, since we traveled in January, we left without trying it).

The only campsite in Lanzarote is in an idyllic location, just a few minutes from Papagayo beach and other incredible beaches found in the Los Ajaches Natural Monument. It has 64 pitches for tents and 220 for motorhomes. It has toilets, showers, barbecue areas, hooks for water supply, electric light, and other services.

Canary Islands. Lanzarote. Part one. Rehearsal of the Apocalypse.

If you, while staying at a resort, meet a small stooped man who, sweating and desperately farting, pulls five suitcases and a stroller with a snotty baby, then know that Morsa is in front of you in person.

If you meet a smiling, handsome couple in stylish and expensive clothes, who travel light and carry only a checkbook from their luggage, then you should know that this is the ideal tourist from the point of view of Morsa.

Therefore, when the dearest mother-in-law again visited our cozy town in order to take care of a two-year-old snotty mini-hell, we did not think much. After searching for the battery, they fished out a strategic supply of silver spoons from there (opened only after a nuclear war), ran to the pawnshop and an hour later the plane carried a married couple, freed for three days from a stroller, diapers and applesauce, into a picture with a luxurious villa from the travel agency catalog :

The fact that the villa was located on the unknown island of Lanzarote, which is part of the Canary Islands archipelago, was not particularly embarrassing for the young couple, drunk on their freedom. The main thing is that the weather forecast gave a stable 20 degrees Celsius, so relevant among the winter that is now reigning in Europe, the pool near the villa was heated, and the name hinted at my favorite Italy.

We flew wow! five hours, and on the internal gyrocompass I felt the hot breath of close Africa (only 140 kilometers to Morocco). Pictures of the island when approaching set Morse up for a good-natured holiday in a tropical paradise:

Lanzarote itself was a tropical paradise with fertile soil, impenetrable jungle, the eternal rivalry between orchids and parrots for the right to be the brightest islanders, with herds of artiodactyls and flocks of predators.

Was… three hundred years ago.

On September 1, 1736, half of the population of Lanzarote never woke up. Those who woke up envied the dead…

If the gods were rehearsing a local apocalypse that day, then it was clearly a success. Within a few hours, 32 (!) high mountains of Montañas del Fuego (“Fire Mountains”) rose on the horizon, blowing their noses into the sky with megatons of ash and slag:

Heaven fell like a black shroud to the earth. And the earth parted under the weight of heaven. Entire villages with all their contents went under the crust into a molten mantle. Or even neatly turned upside down, like a lid on a pot.

Volcanoes alone were not enough for the bloodthirsty gods, and they sent devastating earthquakes and tsunamis to Lanzarote. For six whole years the land on the island was shaking, for six whole years the surviving islanders did not see the white light.

But the ancients spoke the truth: “Do not be afraid of the end of the world, be afraid of what will happen next.” The island was consumed by darkness. Darkness destroyed the forests, covered the fertile land with billions of burnt fragments and brought severe drought and famine:

It is hard to imagine the scale of the catastrophe, all the destructive power of natural forces. Three quarters of the island turned out to be covered with lava and ash:

About a hundred volcanoes formed on Lanzarote, bearing three hundred craters:

Three hundred years have passed and there is still no vegetation, no large animals in the focus of the former catastrophe. Only insects survive in this hellish frying pan. Insects, birds…

… and camels. Four hundred dromedaries were brought from North Africa to soften the harsh landscape and to mimic the semblance of life in my photographs:

Lanzarote Island – one day on Mars

The lunar landscapes and alien views of Lanzarote impressed me while watching Eagle and Tails – Canaries, and live turned out to be cooler than the movie The Martian. The feeling of traveling is “welcome to Mars” or “walking on the Moon without a space suit”! Despite its tiny size, each part of Lanzarote surprises so much that you try to absorb all this unusualness, and then, looking at the pictures, you don’t believe yourself that you were there.

HOW? AND WHEN?

The leader of Eagle and Tails with a gold card spent 2 days on the island. However, not all of his activities seemed interesting to me (I certainly was not going to drive a “lunar car”). Experienced users of the Canary Islands have confirmed that one day is enough to appreciate Lanzarote. As a result, I decided on a one-day “escape” from the neighboring Gran Canaria.

• Collect sand bottles of different colors from all parts of the island.
• Try to avoid crowds of people so as not to spoil the atmosphere of space.

What to see in Lanzarote?

• Timanfaya National Park is the main attraction of the island . Impressed: Martian landscapes and hot earth in the park. And the roads in Timanfaya are so narrow that every time I was delighted when the driver turned a huge bus and managed not to push us into a volcano crater or a cliff.

Tip: It’s best to arrive at opening time at 10 am. It was the best thought of the day, already at 11 the parking lot was packed to capacity. And the entrance is crowded with tourists.

• Lake Charco de los Clicos. This is an unrealistically picturesque place. Acid green lake, black sand, frozen lava rivers and huge waves. It seemed to me that you can stay there forever: climbing boulders, dissolving in endless views and collecting pebbles and shells.

North:

• Volcanic caves Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes. Both host concerts, and if you want to feel like you’re in a Dan Brown film adaptation, then a classical music concert in a cave is very even.
• Mirador del Río – is an observation deck in a restaurant overlooking the ocean and the island of La Graciosa , an island where there are no cars at all, everyone rides bicycles, and gets to the mainland by ferry. Paradise? The view is interesting for its dissimilarity with the southern coast. But you can admire them nearby, without paying for the entrance to the restaurant, where, moreover, there are misted windows.

Conclusion: Lanzarote is a great day trip destination. Fresh, unusual, romantic! But for a long time I would not go here: no matter how cosmic the Lunar-Martian landscapes are, by the evening you begin to notice a lack of greenery and even life.
