Five of the most beautiful villas on Lake Como

Which Villas on Lake Como should you see? Where are the most beautiful villas on Lake Como located? These are perhaps the most common questions asked by tourists who come to Lake Como for the first time.

Each villa on Lake Como has its own unique and sometimes mysterious history. Many estates belonged to a number of noble persons, hosted famous historical figures and became the location for filming cult films. Currently, some of the villas on Lake Como have been converted into hotels. Others are owned by the state and have museums or exhibition halls. Most of the villas on Lake Como are privately owned and closed to the public. We bring to your attention five of the most beautiful villas on Lake Como that you can see.

Villa Balbianello

This estate has become a real movie star. It was Villa Balbianello that was chosen as the location for filming episodes of the James Bond film. Some of the action of the world-famous Star Wars saga also took place here. Why did the directors like the villa so much? Seeing her once, the answer becomes obvious. Located in one of the most picturesque places on Lake Como, the villa is a real masterpiece of architecture and landscape design.

Villa Balbianello impresses not only with its external sophistication, but also with its interior decoration. Its last owner, Guido Monzino, did an excellent job of decorating and furnishing the premises. The interior is decorated with antique tapestries, carpets and antique furniture. The villa has a large collection of paintings and sculptures.

The garden around the villa deserves special admiration. This is one of the largest and most beautiful gardens on Lake Como. Here you can wander for a long time, enjoying the views of the lake opening from a high hill, ancient plants and ancient statues hiding in the greenery.

Villa Melzi

Villa Melzi, located in Bellagio, is famous for its surrounding park. This is the first English-style garden in Italy. Serious landscape work was carried out on it. Artificially created hills and plains create the illusion of space. The garden is decorated with Renaissance sculptures, as well as Egyptian, Roman classical statues. The park of Villa Melzi has inspired many creative people to create new masterpieces.

Villa Melzi was built at the beginning of the 19th century in neoclassical style. Strict lines, discreet decorations – that’s what distinguishes this villa from the rest.

Today, part of the villa is closed to the public, and beautiful frescoes, old paintings and sculptures are displayed in the open spaces. Artists and sculptors with big names worked on the interior. The collection of museum exhibits contains the “key to Milan”, which Napoleon presented to his colleague, Count Melzi.

Villa Monastero

Located in the town of Varenna, Villa Monastero was built on the site of an old nunnery that has operated here since 1567. Its current appearance was created by the penultimate owner, the German entrepreneur Walter Jakob. It was Mr. Jakob who extensively rebuilt the villa in an eclectic style and equipped it with modern amenities such as central heating. At the same time, the park was enlarged, which reaches two kilometers along the line of the lake.

The garden around Villa Monastero deserves special attention. This is a real find for nature lovers, where you can admire rare exotic plants.

Over time, the villa became the property of the state. Since the middle of the twentieth century, the villa has been a center for international conferences, scientific congresses and symposiums. Today the estate has the status of a house-museum and is open to the public. It also hosts weddings, social dinners and other events.

Villa Carlotta

Villa Carlotta is located in Tremezzo. This is a very elegant and elegant estate. Which is not surprising, because its owner for a long time was the daughter of Princess Marianne of Nassau – Carlotta. The villa has soft forms and looks more like a small palace.

Villa Carlotta’s stunning garden is the merit of the owner’s husband, Prince George II. Being a fan of botany, he brought the gardens to perfection. And today it is one of the most beautiful and lush parks on Lake Como. The largest number of tourists visit the park during the flowering of azaleas. But in other seasons there is something to see in the gardens of Villa Carlotta. A walk through the garden impresses with its variety of plants: palm plantations, bamboo forests, an avenue of lemon trees, slopes planted with azaleas and clearings of bright flowers.
