Freeze frame. Canary Islands, Fuerteventura, El Jable – Andrey Rumyantsev

Fuerteventura is famous not only for its lunar landscapes, but also for its “piece of the Sahara” – the snow-white dunes of the El Jable Natural Park (Spanish El Jable ), an area of 27 square kilometers. A wide strip of sand begins 5 kilometers from Corralejo and stretches towards the capital of the island. The dunes became a reserve only from 1982 years old. Now any construction is prohibited here, as well as driving cars and motorcycles. Walking along the dunes is not forbidden. Having reached this place, we arranged a small photo session, a couple of frames from which I post for review, and a more detailed photo report about El Jable will be released later in a separate post.

    Fuerteveven-the oldest is the second largest and first, the first in terms closest to the African coast. The island is famous for its amazing clean beaches, tranquility and small number of local people. A wild paradise with dramatic volcanic landscapes allows you to fully relax in the bosom of nature. nine0003 Photo: Map of the island of Fuenteventura

    The capital of the island is Puerto del Rosario, next to which is the only airport in Fuerteventura. Recently, the island has been actively developing, so in the near future it may turn into a crowded resort.

    The climate of Fuerteventura allows not only sunbathing, but also swimming all year round, because even in winter the temperature does not fall below +20°C, and the fluctuations in water temperature are minimal – an average of +18-22°C. At the same time, the summer is not at all sultry with a temperature of + 27-30 ° C, and the breeze blowing on the island eliminates stuffiness. nine0003

    You can see the island in all its beauty in this video:

    The name Fuerteventura (fuerte – strong, el viento – wind) is associated with constantly blowing winds, which are caused by the absence of a natural barrier in the form of high mountains, of which there are very few on the island . For the same reason, there is almost no precipitation here – there are no peaks that would hold clouds.

    The pride of Fuerteventura is about 100 km of dazzling white beaches (Matorral, Marfolin) and 25 km of amazing black beaches (Gran Tarajal, Playa de Ajuy). There are also beaches for surfers, where strong winds do not stop blowing (La Pared, Corralejo), and on Sotavento beach, 30 km away, the world competition of windsurfers is held annually. The most picturesque beach of the island is Playa Cofete, where it seems that you are at the origins of the universe. nine0003

    The landscape of the island is very different from its neighbors – deserted, dramatic, in dark gray and brown tones, with craters and bare hills. But together with the white and black beaches, the azure sea, cacti and palm trees, this creates an unsurpassed ensemble. Looking at this splendor, you involuntarily indulge in dreams, and the vanity leaves the mind.

    A special charm of Fuerteventura is given by typical desert vegetation – agave, various succulents, aloe vera and date palms. The island is home to many species of birds, such as the vulture, the egret and the rare predatory osprey. The motley monarch butterfly also lives here. nine0037

    1. Relax on the fabulous white sands of the Matorral beach;
    2. Visit the picturesque village of Betancuria in the bosom of the crater;
    3. Take a ride on a “kamikaze” in a water park called Baku;
    4. Take amazing pictures on the beach of unearthly beauty Kofete;
    5. Experience real solitude in the village of Makhanicho; nine0037
    6. Participate in a camel safari in La Lajita;
    7. Go to Lobos Island without forgetting your mask and snorkel;
    8. Dream on the black sands of Gran Tarajal, contemplating strange landscapes;
    9. Spend a day at the unique Oasis Park;
    10. See the island from Pico de la Sarza.

    Jandia

    Photo: Jandia

    Jandia is a peninsula with the best white sand beaches and the island’s highest peak, Pico de la Sarza (807 m). This is the most popular resort area of Fuerteventura, which was chosen mainly by tourists from northern Europe. nine0003

    Beaches

    Matorral (Playa Matorral) – a long beach with clean white sand, stretching from the cliffs of Morro Jable for 3 km (width reaches 500 m). At the beginning of the beach there are toilets, showers, restaurants, in the center near the lighthouse there are catamarans and a surf point. Friendly Maghreb squirrels live in the salt marshes behind the beach. There are nudists;

    Playa de Cofete is an endless pristine and difficult to access beach that stretches for 8 km. Behind are enchanting formidable mountains and clouds so rare for the island. nine0003

    Traveler reviews indicate that the best way to get to Cofete is by bus, because the car’s suspension is too low and the road is too difficult.

    Leisure

    Not far from the isthmus in the village of La Lajita there is an Oasis Park for 800 thousand square meters. m. with a botanical garden, a delightful Cactus Garden with 28 thousand species of flora, a zoo with African animals: giraffes, crocodiles, hippos and the cutest meerkats. There is also a camel farm where you can book a camel safari. nine0003

    La Pared

    Photo: La Pared

    La Pared is a small town on the northern part of the isthmus of the Khandi peninsula. This is a place of constantly blowing strong winds, which is good for surfers. The coast is inlaid with rocks of different colors and shapes – from black to yellow and white. But strong winds and waves make the beach not too welcoming, but the local scenery is breathtaking.

    Beaches

    Playa de La Pared is a stunning wide beach in a bay with gray sand and huge gray rocks behind. nine0003

    Playa del Viejo Rey – a beautiful beach with fine golden sand framed by amazing chocolate mountains. The place is very dangerous for swimming – there can be strong undercurrents.

    Costa Calma

    Photo: Costa Calma

    Costa Calma (Spanish for “quiet coast”) is the island’s newest and fastest growing resort at the end of the southern coast of the Chandi Peninsula. This is where the multi-kilometer Sotavento beach originates. This is almost the only green place on the island due to the constant watering with waste and purified water from hotels. nine0003

    Beaches

    Photo: Playa del Salmo

    Costa Calma – the central beach is 2 km long and 300 m wide. Excellent infrastructure.

    Playa del Salmo – a beautiful beach with dunes, behind which it is very good to hide from the wind. Covered with white sand, there are black stones. There are nudists.

    Playa Barca is a spacious golden beach next to a lagoon that forms during high tides.

    Playa de Matas Blancas is a secluded sand and pebble beach at the end of the resort.

    Leisure

    A fun African market with colorful trinkets and aloe vera cosmetics.

    Gran Tarajal

    Photo: Gran Tarajal

    Gran Tarajal is a large resort in the central part of the southern coast of Fuerteventura. This is a city of gray mountains, black volcanic beaches and white houses that dilute a rather formidable landscape. Not everyone will appreciate such outlandish beauty, but the last romantics, tired of fashionable resorts, will find peace of mind here. nine0003

    Beaches

    Playa Gran Tarajal (Playa Gran Tarajal) – the cleanest wide (100 m) beach with fine dark gray sand. There are playgrounds, cafes, shops.

    Attractions

    Of the architectural objects, there is only the church of Nuestra Señora de la Candela in the heart of the city.

    El Castillo

    Photo: Castillo Caleta de Fuste

    Castillo Caleta de Fuste or El Castillo (Castillo Caleta de Fuste) is a resort in the east of the island with a minimum distance from the airport, which plays in its favor. As the name implies, the shores of the resort are rocky – this fact attracts divers. But there are places to sunbathe and swim. nine0003

    Beaches

    For a traditional beach holiday, excellent artificial beaches are equipped:

    Sheraton beach – a bulk beach in the south of the city with fine sand. Breakwaters protect the coast from waves.

    Playa del Castillo is an artificial beach in a safe cove, sheltered from wind and waves.

    Both beaches are safe and great for families with children.

    Leisure

    El Castillo has a bowling alley, a cinema and a huge golf club next to the resort. There are dive and surf centers, and one of the local entertainments is paid fishing. nine0003

    Puerto del Rosario

    Photo: Puerto del Rosario

    Puerto del Rosario is the capital and main port of Fuerteventura, where you can see interesting architectural objects in the old harbor and the house-museum of the outcast Miguel de – Unamuno. In the south there is a good beach with imported sand.

    Beaches

    Playa Blanca is a very gentle beach with golden sand. Excellent infrastructure. There is a playground.

    Playa de Las Arenas – wild rocky beach.

    Corralejo

    You can see the city of Corralejo from above in this video:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qazUj_B7ggQ

    Corralejo is the largest resort town of Fuerteventura. There are even signs of party life here, which is not found in other resorts of the island. And the beaches of Korallehi are worthy of special mention – 10 km of white sand, but they are all located 1 km and further southeast of the city. Almost all beaches can be used by naturists, which should definitely be taken into account. nine0003

    Beaches

    Photo: Playa del Viejo

    Beaches from north to south:

    Clavellina (Playa la Clavellina) is a miniature sand and rocky beach in the north of the city.

    Playa del Medan is the nearest good beach with light sand and an interesting view of Lobos Island. They do kite surfing here.

    Playa del Pozo – beach with dunes and nuraghes, where you can hide from the winds.

    Playa del Viejo – a snow-white beach with dunes and nuraghes.

    Caseron (Playa del Caseron) – excellent comfortable beach and the only place where there are no nudists.

    Playa de los Martos (Playa de los Martos) – a wide beach with golden sand, there are stones. There are nudists.

    Rosadero (Playa del Rosadero) – a good sandy beach. Convenient location right next to the road. Rocky entry into the water.

    Leisure

    A great leisure option is to take a boat trip to Lobos Island with clear waters and magnificent scenery, just 15 minutes from Corralejo. This place is ideal for snorkelling, so bring your mask, snorkel and fins. nine0003

    Among the agaves and palm trees on Corralejo is the only Baku Water Park on the island with three theme parks: water rides for children and adults, the Europa-Park entertainment area and a zoo with cats, iguanas and flamingos. Here you can even swim next to small sharks.

    Mahanicho

    Photo: Mahanicho

    Majanicho is a tiny village in a secluded bay where there is no wind and waves. There is a golden shallow beach. The quietest wild and deserted place with minimal civilization. Here you can ride a bike among the deserted expanses. nine0003

    El Cotillo

    Photo: El Cotillo

    El Cotillo is a village in the northwest of the island with excellent, spacious beaches. At the main beach rises a memo – Toston Tower, built to prevent pirate raids.

    Beaches

    Beaches in the vicinity:

    Playa Marfolin – a fabulous white sandy beach with aquamarine waters. Very gentle. There are nuraghes and beautiful black stones. There are restaurants nearby.

    Playa Chica is a small beach in nearby Los Lagos. Resting nudists.

    Playa del Castillo is a golden beach with strong waves. There are naturists.

    Ajuy

    Photo: Ajuy

    Ajuy is a small fishing village with colorful houses, a picturesque black sand beach and colorful boulders along the shore. If you walk north from the coast, you can find interesting grottoes. In general, the village, although tiny, but colorful. nine0003

    Beach

    Playa de Ajuy or Caleta Negra (Playa de Ajuy) is a small bright black beach framed by rocks.

    Results for Fuerteventura

    Fuerteventura has no parties and lush greenery, but it has no equal in terms of the number of magnificent beaches. The liveliest city of Corralejo, despite the presence of a water park and excellent sandy beaches, cannot be recommended for a family holiday (many nudists). It is better to choose Castillo Caleta de Fuste, where the safest artificial beaches on the island are equipped.
