La Gomera | Equatorial

La Gomera is the closest island to Tenerife. Most tourists come to Homera from the island of Tenerife and do not stay longer than one day. The main attraction of the island, for which tourists appreciate it so much, is its pristine nature: gorges, mountain peaks, laurel forests … for many travelers visiting the island, all this fully compensates for the lack of long sandy beaches.

To come to Homer and not whistle is a great omission! Long before the invention of the telephone, the local population communicated and communicated with each other through a unique whistling language. In case of danger or on the hunt, this whistle (“silbo”) could easily replace “mobile” ones (after all, it was heard at a distance of up to 4 km). Modeling the whistle with the help of the tongue and leaving the lips and fingers motionless, the local population has created a whole vocabulary of “silbo”. Now this language is not used in everyday life, but it is demonstrated with pleasure to the delight of tourists.

How to get there

From the port of Los Cristianos (Tenerife), ferries (32 km) run several times a day to Gomera, which arrive in the capital – San Sebastian. The ferry covers the distance in 1 hour 40 minutes, and the high-speed boat in just 45 minutes.

Gomera also has direct flights to Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Beaches of Gomera

Valle Gran Rey (“Valley of the Great King”) is a popular resort complex from the coastal villages of La Galera, La Playa, La Puntilla and Vueltas. These resorts go out of their way to meet the requirements of their (mostly German) guests and attract tourists not only with idyllic scenery, but also with first-class service. La Galera, nicknamed Montmartre because of the many small boutiques and restaurants, is considered one of the most charming towns in the archipelago. Living here is expensive, but there is a small but pretty beach. Hydrofoils dock at the Vueltas marina, linking the island with Los Cristianos in Tenerife, as well as for short cruises along the coast and to Los Organos.

In Playa de Santiago, there is another large resort complex called Jardín Tesina: many bars, restaurants, tennis courts and golf courses. Situated on top of sheer cliffs, the complex consists of white bungalows. An elevator, laid in a shaft inside the mountain, takes guests to the beach and the Laurel club. This club boasts a huge salt water pool and a good restaurant. There are other beaches to the east of the complex, including Tapahuga, Chinguarime and Playa del Medno.

Cuisine and restaurants

Gomera is famous for its cuisine, especially potato and rice dishes. A separate highlight of the local cuisine is given by the descendants of emigrants who left for Cuba at the beginning of the 20th century. They, for example, you can try Cuban rice with fried banana.

It is also worth trying the national delicacy called palm honey. It is brewed from palm sap – guarapo and goes well with salted goat cheeses.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions Gomera

In the capital of the island, San Sebastian, it is worth seeing: the Plaza de las Americas with many cafes, the Gothic tower of Torre del Conde, the Virgen de Asuncion church (according to legend, Christopher Columbus prayed in this church before continuation of his first journey). They say that before sailing to the New World, Columbus stopped at Casa de Colon on Real Street, 56. And Pozo de Colon, a well located in the courtyard of the building, has an inscription: “America was baptized with water from this source.”

On the coast of Vallehermoso, in the northwest of the island, rise the basalt columns of Los Organos, resembling organ pipes (which reach a height of 80 meters).

Garajonay National Park

Garajonay National Park was created to preserve the relic vegetation on the island. Here, thanks to the constant light fog created by the collision of cool Atlantic winds with warm breezes, one can imagine what the Mediterranean forest looked like before the last ice age. About 450 species of rare trees and plants from 1986 years are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Laurisilva is an ancient laurel forest in the depths of the park, where the trees reach 20 meters in height. The hollows are home to many species of rare birds, including the long-fingered Canarian pigeon. Los Roques – volcanic formations (Zarcita – 1236 m, Carmen – 1140 m and Agando – 1250 m) located outside the park. The best panorama opens from Mirador el Bailadero. Laguna Grande is a great place to stop while walking through the park. There is a good restaurant, playground and picnic areas.

Liis Kadai from the Estravel office at Tallinn Airport visited Tenerife

Liis Kadai from Estravel at Tallinn Airport visited Tenerife

“My last trip took me from dark and cloudy Estonia to the sunny island of Tenerife. It has a very pleasant atmosphere – everywhere is green, clean and safe. Tenerife is a place suitable for everyone. Here you can enjoy the beautiful nature, walk north along the forest and mountain paths. Cities on the island with an interesting history, picturesque views and water parks. The south of the island attracts visitors with its hot climate and unusual volcanic sand, as well as beaches with an active nightlife,” said Liis Kadai from the Estravel office at Tallinn Airport.

A brief overview of the different resorts in Tenerife based on the Liys experience:

Puerto de la Cruz is one of the main resorts in the north of Tenerife. This place has been a favorite resort for many tourists over the years. There is much more greenery here than in the south of Tenerife. The old town enchants tourists with its architecture typical of the Canary Islands. In addition to attractions, Loro National Park is nearby. Puerto de la Cruz is a great holiday destination for discerning travelers looking for peace, culture, romance, the perfect resort for a family vacation, or just relaxing with friends.
Tenerife’s largest resort – Playa de Las Americas located in the southern part of the island. Reina Sophie International Airport is only 17 km away. Playa de Las Americas is famous for its tourism and developed infrastructure. It has everything for vacationers – restaurants, cafes, shops, casinos, many sports complexes and nightclubs. Every hour there is a mini train, as well as buses. The resort has a lively nightlife, and during the day, sunny beaches with dark sand await vacationers.
Los Gigantes is located on the picturesque west coast of Tenerife, about 30 km from Los Cristianos. South of the six cliffs of Los Gigantes are small resort towns. The massive rock wall of Los Gigantes is best seen from the ocean – the cliffs rise above it, providing an opportunity to observe the different colors and textures of volcanic rocks. Los Gigantes has many cozy bars, restaurants and shops. There is a pedestrian area in the main square around the church where most social events take place. Los Gigantes beach with dark sand is small and clean and suitable for children.
Playa de la Arena is a resort town south of Los Gigantes and Puerto Santiago. The west coast is known for many sunny days and a warm Atlantic breeze every day. Playa de la Arena is best known for its black volcanic sand on the beaches. Blue water and black sand create an impressive contrast. The resort’s beach is considered the cleanest in the Canary Islands. The extensive coastal promenades offer tourists a variety of shops, while seafood and fruit markets are open until noon. The resort is family friendly.
Los Cristianos is the closest airport to Tenerife South International Airport. The resort has a beautiful beach and a well-equipped harbor with ferries to the islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. The cute little resort town can offer a fantastic getaway. During the day, vacationers can enjoy the sun on the wide beaches of the resort, and in the evenings relax in nightclubs and restaurants.
“I really liked Tenerife and I think that Tenerife is one of the best places to stay, especially since we have direct flights from Estonia,” says Liis.
