is the best destination for you in Gran Canaria? + travel guide
Have you seen these white nostalgic looking fishing villages and white houses in brochures or web pages about Gran Canaria? Well, these are in Puerto de Mogan. It was once a quiet little fishing village and still is. But recently several newer and larger hotels have moved into the area. Is it bad? No, the front of the resort and the nostalgic heart of Puerto de Mogán have been left intact, and now you can have a brand new modern hotel close by. nine0003

Beaches
How is the beach in Puerto de Mogán? It has a beautiful white sand beach mixed with some black sand. It is a beach with many restaurants near it, so it is good for a beach day with the whole family. It is often referred to as one of Gran Canaria’s “must see” beaches, but I’d say it’s more of an average beach than you can find in Gran Canaria. All in all, with a harbour, a market and plenty of restaurants, this is a nice and unique place to visit in Gran Canaria, so I think that’s where the rumors are coming from. nine0003
Hotels
In the past few years, Puerto de Mogán has been under serious construction and hotels have been added. This means that many of them are fresh, new and modern. Here are three of my favorites:
- The Puerto de Mogan THe Senses Collection is perfect if you want a nice little boutique hotel near the beach.
- Cordial Mogan Playa is a beautiful and large family hotel with stunning pools and gardens.
- Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Gran Canaria is newly built, elegant, modern and family oriented. nine0018
Nightlife
Nightlife here is all about dining and relaxing with a few drinks next to the water. This is not where you find late night bars and clubs. However, I must say that there is a lot of construction and development going on in the area, so this could change very soon.
Would you like to see other small, beautiful resorts in Gran Canaria, if you think that maybe Puerto de Mogán is not for you? Then check out my guide on where to stay in Gran Canaria. nine0003
Restaurants and bars
Puerto de Mogan has one of the largest selections of restaurants in Gran Canaria. Most of them are still quite small and authentic. For example, in Meloneras, Gran Canaria, you also have plenty of restaurants to choose from, but many of them feel too big and impersonal. Restaurants in Puerto de Mogan are more personal and authentic. Especially those near the beach and in the small harbor area.
How to get to Puerto de Mogan
Puerto de Mogán is 53 km from Gran Canaria Airport (LPA):
- Public transport: 6.35€
- Shuttle bus: 12.00€
- Taxi: 54€
Here are some important things you need to know and the companies I used in Gran Canaria for transfers, buses and taxis.
Shopping in Puerto de Mogán has changed a lot over the years. Previously, there was almost nothing here, but now the resort has a brand new shopping center, large supermarkets and even more under construction. nine0003
Things to do in Puerto de Mogan
On Friday, Puerto de Mogan hosts one of the largest markets on the island. Otherwise, there isn’t much to do here other than the usual tourist stuff. Take time to watch the sunset here too. There is a sunset spot that is famous for this, but it often gets too crowded. Since it is the last town before the highlands, you can have a great view of the sunset from almost anywhere. Maybe a good restaurant or bar would be better than a sunset spot. nine0003
If you want to make the most of your holiday, see more of the island and at the same time save money on a taxi or airport transfer, rent a car at Gran Canaria Airport.
Here is my complete list of do’s and don’ts while on holiday in Gran Canaria.
Puerto de Mogán. German paradise in Gran Canaria
In the southwest of Gran Canaria is located one of the most beautiful and picturesque towns – Puerto de Mogán , center of the province of the same name. The city has long been chosen by German tourists . It seems that there are much more of them here than local residents.
Elderly Germans simply occupied the beach, hotels, cafes and restaurants. As a result, prices in Puerto de Mogan are higher than in other cities. The range of shops and souvenir shops is also adapted to the main consumer – a leisurely German pensioner.
It’s no surprise that guests from Germany liked this place so much. nine0062 The climate here is considered to be one of the best in the world , the sun shines almost 365 days a year. It is always warm, clean and friendly ocean. What else do you need for a great vacation?
Puerto de Mogán – the little Venice of the Canary archipelago
Puerto de Mogán is characterized by white, low-rise buildings, decorated with colorful finishes, immersed in flowers and greenery. Thanks to the canals created there, flowing right under the houses, the city often is called the Venice of the Canarian archipelago .

Directly within the old town, , there is a picturesque port with 225 yacht places. A tourist submarine is also based here – everyone can observe the underwater world of the Atlantic Ocean. nine0003
Canals in Puerto de Mogán, Gran Canaria. |
About a hundred meters from the main beach there is a historical monument – the ruins of the settlement of the ancient inhabitants of the island. Entrance is paid, a full ticket costs 4 Euros, reduced – 2. Tourists like to come here before sunset. From the height of a special observation deck offers an excellent view of the sunset, mountains and the city.
How to get to Puerto de Mogán
By car, the distance from the capital of the island, the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is approximately 80 kilometers. The road passes, among other things, through the southern coast of the island, so it guarantees many places with a good view for photos.
