10 party people rescued by helicopter from stranded yacht on New Years Eve –
1/2/23, 6:40 AM
By CECOES .
Gran Canaria
Maritime Rescue were called to an emergency late on Saturday night (New Years Eve) after receiving an SOS from a privately owned sailing boat, that had run aground on rocks near the shore of Playa del Inglés, in the south of Gran Canaria.
The Helimer 206 helicopter was sent to airlift 10 people from the boat after a New Years Eve party on board went wrong, and the yacht got stranded on rocks, inaccessible by sea, hence the need for air assistance.
Crew successfully airlifted them all to safety in the dark of night and flew them to the Berriel aerodrome, where they were met by the Canary Islands Health Service (SUC) and assessed by paramedics without any of them needing to go to hospital for treatment.
Not the way the revellers on the boat or emergency rescuers wanted to bring in the New Year, but fortunately, no-one was injured in the incident.

At the request of the Spanish authorities, the Russian barque “Sedov” was delayed for a day in Las Palmas
The response “gesture of goodwill” of the Russian side was the extension of the “open side” so that residents and guests of Gran Canaria could climb on the deck of the barque
The Russian training sailing vessel “Sedov”, which is sailing around the world as part of the sailing expedition of the Federal Agency for Fishery “Sails of the World 2020” in honor of the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica and the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, left the Spanish port of Las Palmas, where it entered on the eve of the New of the year. At the request of the Spanish authorities, the barque extended its stay on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria by a day, moving the exit from the port from Saturday to Sunday evening, TASS was told in the media center of the round the world. nine0005
“Instead of the planned four days, the world’s largest four-masted training sailing ship Sedov stayed in the hospitable Spanish port of Las Palmas for five days. The port authorities offered the leadership of the Russian sailing ship to stay for a day, taking on all the costs of the Sedov’s extra-planned parking, – said a representative of the media center. The response “gesture of goodwill” of the Russian side was the extension of the “open side”, so that residents and guests of Gran Canaria could climb onto the deck of the barque. nine0005
According to the guests of the sailboat, including the honorary consul of Russia in the Canary Islands Gonzalo Parada, the mayor of Las Palmas Agusto Hidalgo, the director of the port Luis Ibarca, representatives of the Russian Embassy in Spain, the call of the round-the-world sailing ship “Sedov” “became significant and very valuable”, which was noted in their publications by journalists from various Spanish media.
The guests of the Sedov were able to get acquainted with the almost 100-year history of the barque, the life and life of trainee cadets, the goals and objectives of the unique expedition of training sailboats of the Federal Fishery Agency “Sails of the World 2020” with the participation of the barges “Sedov” and “Kruzenshtern”, as well as the frigate “Pallada”. They were also presented with a unique exhibition of works by the Russian artist Pavel Mikhailov, who 200 years ago took part in the famous Antarctic expedition of Thaddeus Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev. His works serve as documentary evidence of the priority of Russian researchers in the discovery of Antarctica. nine0005
During the days of the Sedov’s stay in Las Palmas, excursions to the sights of the city and the island were organized for the crew and cadets on board the barque. The ship was replenished with fuel, technical fluids and food.
Ahead of the sailboat is a long, more than 30-day ocean passage to Montevideo. The Sedov will have to travel over 4,000 nautical miles to this Uruguayan port, which is scheduled to enter on February 6.
About sailboat and expedition
Sedov was launched at the shipyard in Kiel (Germany) in 1921 and was originally called Magdalena Winnen II. During World War II, the ship was part of the German auxiliary fleet, and in accordance with the decision of the Potsdam Conference on reparations, it was transferred to the Soviet Union in December 1945 and renamed Sedov in honor of the polar explorer Georgy Sedov. The bark is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest training sailing ship that has survived to this day. Its length is 117.5 m, the displacement is 7320 tons, the crew is 240 people, the sail area is almost 4.2 thousand m.
Three training sailing vessels participate in the round-the-world sailing expedition of the Federal Agency for Fishery: Pallada, Kruzenshtern and Sedov. “Pallada” set off on a voyage on November 1 from the port of Vladivostok. From November 2019 to December 2020, the Sedov barque and the Pallada frigate will carry out round-the-world voyages, and the Kruzenshtern will transatlantic voyage. A total of 692 cadets of the Federal Agency for Fishery and 56 cabin boys will have a seafaring practice on board the sailboats. Along the way, the sailboats will make a total of more than 40 calls at the ports of the countries of North and South America, Africa, Europe, Oceania, and will cover about 100 thousand nautical miles. The culmination of the voyage will be a meeting of sailboats in the waters of the South Georgia Islands, joint maneuvering and a memorial race. nine0005
