Lanzarote Holiday Guide: Visiting the Neighbouring Islands

Home » Blog » A Guide To Visiting Lanzarote’s Neighbouring Islands

August 14, 2018

While we’re certain that Lanzarote is the best of the Canary Islands, there’s still a wealth of beauty all across the archipelago that’s well worth taking the time to see – in both the larger island of Fuerteventura and the small islet of La Graciosa.

Lanzarote excursions beyond the island itself might seem a little daunting, but this post will address any concerns you may have about crossing the water and turning your holiday into an adventure.

How to get to Fuerteventura from Lanzarote

There’s a regular ferry service from Lanzarote to Fuerteventura, departing from Playa Blanca to Corralejo in Fuerteventura several times a day. Three companies share responsibility for the route – Lineas Romero, Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas – and you can expect to pay anywhere between 27 and 53 Euros for a return trip for an adult. This does include your car, though, so you’re getting a decent deal here.

The trip takes roughly 25 minutes, or over an hour if your ferry stops on the uninhabited Isla De Lobos, just off the Fuerteventura coast.

This small isle is perfect for a secluded and quiet beach day – so don’t discount it from your island-hopping plans!

A Fuerteventura day trip

Exploring the northern end of this surprisingly large island will easily fill a day. The port town of Corralejo is ideal for a quick drink and wander amongst its shops and, once you’re suitably refreshed, you could check out the bewitching sand dunes at the Corralejo National Park – the biggest expanse of sand in the Canary Islands, which looks incredible even if you’re just driving through.

If you’re arriving on a suitable day for a hike, pack your walking boots for the climb up to the top of Montana Roja – an ancient volcano that offers stunning views over the water to Lanzarote and beyond to La Graciosa. Pack some binoculars – as you may even be able to spot your villa in Playa Blanca!

After a hike, you might want to relax on a glorious stretch of sand, and Fuerteventura delivers exactly this. Beaches to make a beeline for around the northern end of the island include those surrounding the village of El Cotillo, as you can combine a chilled-out beach day with a visit to the El Toston Lighthouse – which includes a traditional fishing museum, as well as an attractive viewpoint across the crashing waves.

La Graciosa day trip – Lanzarote’s little brother

If you’re after a smaller-scale island adventure, La Graciosa may well be for you. Situated just off the northern tip of Lanzarote, it’s well worth taking the short ferry trip over to see what the island has to offer.

The La Graciosa ferry departs from the charming town of Orzola and arrives at the sand-fringed, sparsely populated island 25 minutes later – and what you do when you’re there is up to you. Finding a secluded spot and sunbathing all day is a tempting option to say the least, or you could go souvenir hunting around the characterful town of Caleta De Sebo. Bike hire is also available if you want to explore the interior, as there are very few cars on the island’s dirt roads.

However much island-hopping you’re planning on doing, making sure you’re staying somewhere private and comfortable should be your first priority. Have a browse of our extensive selection of villas in Lanzarote and start planning your multi-island trip today!
