“Eating in an unbeatable setting”
This is a very attractive restaurant, set high up within the Botanical Gardens, a must visit in Gran Canaria. It is made to resemble a typical country house, with big windows looking out onto the Barranco Guiniguada ravine, and wooden floors. The chefs will prepare delicious food for those who decide to go and try the local dishes served here. One of the specialities is potaje de berros (watercress soup with pork, corn, potatoes, beans and cumin), which is eaten all over the Canary Islands and loved by foreigners. You should also try the vegetable soup, pork chops, bream and garlic chicken. For dessert, ice-cream with bienmesabe (a sweet cream of almonds, egg yolk and cinnamon, which can only be found around here) is recommended.

An interesting Botanical Garden on the island of Gran Canaria, bringing together all the flora of the Canary Islands in one place. This is a great place for family outings.

The botanical garden on the island of Gran Canaria is named after Viera Clavijo (Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo). The Spanish scientist, ethnographer and clergyman José Viera i Clavijo lived in 1731-1813. and died in Las Palmas. The creation of a botanical garden in Gran Canaria was his idea, and it was embodied by another scientist, the Swedish botanist Eric Svensson.
The garden is located near the capital of the island, on the slopes of Mount Guiniguada, in the town of Tafira Alta. It covers an area of 10 hectares along the gorges of the Barranco de Guiniguada. The garden is located on both sides of the gorge, which are connected by two bridges – wooden and stone.
A bust of Viera Clavijo with a commemorative inscription is placed on a pedestal at the entrance. There is also a monument to the creator, the first director, Eric Svensson, in the garden. For the Swedish scientist, this garden was the work of a lifetime. He himself obtained samples of rare plants, climbing rocks, making his way to hard-to-reach places.
Preparations for the opening of the botanical garden began in 1952. The task was not easy: in addition to marking the landscape, arranging bridges and paths, it was necessary to plan the garden area in the future, to imagine how it would look in a few decades. Separate spaces were allocated for different types of plants, a habitat close to natural was created. The garden officially opened in 1959. The territory of Jardín Botánico Canario was divided into thematic zones.
What to see?
At the entrance to the garden is the Date Palm Square, endemic to the Canary archipelago. Further you can see the Laurel Forest (once the noble laurel occupied large areas, and today it belongs to endangered species). Behind the laurel plantings is the Pine Forest.

The Gardens of the Islands occupy the vast area of the garden, where unique plants from different islands of the archipelago are planted, grouped in separate areas, depending on the growing area. More than two thousand species of succulents are represented in the Cactus Garden – not only from the Canary Islands, but also from America and Africa, from Madagascar.
The vertically oriented landscape of the botanical garden follows the relief of the Canary Islands. On a winding path you can climb up to the symbol of the Canary Islands – the Dragon Tree. At the top of the complex is a stone-lined observation deck. On the territory there is a greenhouse, an artificial waterfall, gazebos.

Since 1983, the garden has established a seed bank for trees endemic to the Canary Islands and a conservation programme. The complex offers a library, herbarium, laboratories. You can visit the Jardín Botánico Canario all year round. The best months to visit are January and February.
