The Best Beaches in La Palma

Contenido

La Palma is famous for its mountainous terrain and green fertile vegetation. The island is popular with walkers who come from all over the world to sample the beautiful trails – such as those in the Caldera de Taburiente National Park – that have views that stretch for many kilometres. Because of La Palma’s location in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean it has a very special weather system which means that there is good weather throughout the year.

La Palma is also popular because of its beaches. Some people choose to just relax on the beautiful black sandy beaches and gaze at the turquoise ocean. Other visitors come to La Palma for adventure sports. They swim in the clear waters, surf the big waves and scuba dive close to the spectacular volcanic seabed.

La Palma has such a variety of beautiful features that it is known as the “Isla Bonita”, which means the “beautiful island” in Spanish. What comes next is a review of the best beaches on the island:

Contenido

Puerto de Tazacorte

This beach is located in the opening of the Las Angustias ravine. It is characterised by fine black sand. There is a family atmosphere with calm transparent waters. Watching the sun go down on the shore is very much worthwhile.

Echentive

This beach, which is also known as “Playa Nueva”, is located at the feet of the Teneguía volcano. It stretches to 300 metres in length and has black sand. The area is isolated and wild-looking (though still accessible by car), so it is a great place for those that want to disconnect. The Teneguía volcano erupted in 1971, and the area still bears the hallmarks of lava flows. There are natural pools and hot springs for visitors to enjoy.

Puerto Naos

Puerto Naos beach is the largest on La Palma. It is located to the southwest of the island. It is a blue flag beach with many high quality facilities. The beach is volcanic in origin and so it has fine black sand with a tincture of green rock dust. At sunset the beach offers a night diving experience.

La Zamora

Visitors find this beach’s fine black sand astonishing the small cove is located below a dramatic cliff at the top of which is a car park and a small terrace bar. The volcanic environment of the surrounding area offers unusual contrasts in colour. There are, for instance, dark hues from the rocks that mix with greens from the nearby banana fields. Sunsets from this quiet location are spectacular.

Bajamar

This beach, located in the east of La Palma, is one of the most popular places for locals to swim. It is 700 metres long with black sand. It is located very close to Santa Cruz de La Palma. There are cafes and restaurants nearby. It is a great spot for early-risers that want to see the best sunrise of their lives.

Los Cancajos

The beach of Los Cancajos, located near Santa Cruz de La Palma, has a concave shape and is blessed with dark sand. It is a wide space that allows for open-mindedness. Volcanic rock has been used to make a breakwater, so swimming can be undertaken in calm waters throughout the year. There is a wealthy ocean bed which makes it a recommended spot for divers.

Nogales

Nogales has beautiful mountains, captivating trails and a landscape that mixes dark lava formations with a crystalline ocean. The beach has dark volcanic sand and is located at the foot of a cliff. These features give the spot a wild mystical aura.

Charco Verde

Charco Verde is immersed in natural splendour. With calm waters, it is an ideal cove for a family day out. The beach is 150 metres long. Cliffs and banana trees mark the area which is easily accessible by road.

Beaches for surfer:

In winter, surfers opt for Echentive beach (Playa Nueva). In the summer they prefer Nogales beach.

A note for swimmers:

The beaches on the south of the island are more comfortable for swimming.  In this part of the island there are wonderful spots to plunge into the Atlantic Ocean.

La Palma 24 – The most beautiful beaches of La Palma

The largest beaches on La Palma

Playa de Puerto Naos

Playa de Tazacorte

Playa de los Guirres – also named as Playa Nueva

Playa de Charco Verde

Playa de La Zamora and Playa Chica

Playa Punta Larga

You’ll find Punta Larga between the lighthouses and the Zamora-beaches. There is no real sandy beach, but a beautiful bay where you get over gravel, flat rock slabs into the Atlantic Ocean. Be aware: There is no lifeguard! But newly there is a barbecue place directly in front of the Ocean with fireplaces, tables, benches, sanitary facilities and a kiosk.

Playa Echentive

This beach in the southwest of the island is close to the lighthouses and has an impressive length with fine sand. Unfortunately there is not always wind in this corner of the island and the Playa Echentive offers only a little protection by rocks or trees. Be careful, the sea can be very rough and there is no lifeguard!

Playa del Faro

You will find below the old and new lighthouse in the southern tip of La Palma a small, almost 150-meter-long bay with a zone for small fishing boats. The beach consists of sand and gravel, a protective wall serves as a wave breaker. The former main attraction of this beach, a small restaurant with fish specialties, is also a victim of the wrecking ball. Warning: There is no lifeguard and no sanitary facilities.

Playa de la Salemera

We are now around the southern tip of the island and arriving in the southeast of La Palma at the Playa de la Salemera. This is a nice little beach and also has a recommendable restaurant. But usually for the southern tip of La Palma: mostly blows a quite fresh wind, but this beach is never overrun…

Playa de los Cancajos

The beach in the main tourist centre in the east of La Palma is called Playa de los Cancajos. There also blows since years in summer the environment flag of the FEE, everything is in accordance with cleanliness, well maintained and watched by lifeguards. And of course there are plenty of bars and restaurants to become food and drinks.

Playa de Bajamar

Bajamar Beach gets often called as the ‘town beach of Santa Cruz de La Palma’, because it is situated on the southern entrance to the capital of La Palma. But officially this beach is belongs to the municipality of Breña Baja and offers sanitary facilities, clean sand and lifeguard security. Even the water quality is good, although the beach was created exactly on the opposite from the port. Otherwise in the past few summers would have not blown the blue flag of the FEE.

The city beach of Santa Cruz

The city beach of Santa Cruz de La Palma has approximately 70.000 sqm and was opened in April 2017. It has well maintained sanitary facilities, lifeguards and is accessible also for handicapped persons. A diving centre, areas for other sport activities, kiosks and much more is planned.

Playa de los Nogales

This beach is one of the nicest on La Palma and is located in the east of La Palma below the municipality of Puntallana. But be aware: You can reach the wild and romantic beach situated on the cliffs only via a staircase and bathing in the wild Atlantic Ocean in the east considered extreme caution. There are no lifeguards!!!

Playa Puerto Espindola and the natural swimming pools in Charco Azul

The 85-meter-long beach Playa Puerto Espindola, belongs to the municipality San Andrés y Sauces, became more and more beautiful during the last years. San Andrés y Sauces also has the natural swimming pools of Charco Azul. These blue oases of the wild Atlantic also got the “Eco-Beach-Pennant”. Natural swimming pool La Fajana

There are also natural swimming pools on the coast of the northern municipality of Barlovento, so that even if the sea is rough you can swim in safety. The area has a pool, also for handicapped persons, and has sanitary facilities and a restaurant. The area is called Piscinas La Fajana.

Canary Islands hotel review: Taburiente Playa, La Palma

So, at the end of November 2014, we went to the island of La Palma (Canary Islands). We spent seven nights safely in the cozy hotel Las Olas. And on the last evening, I decided to walk along the beach of Los Canhayos, see other hotels – well, so to speak, visualize dreams for the next vacation.

Taburiente Playa – the largest hotel on the coast – I liked a few days before, when we went to withdraw money from the hotel’s ATM. I wish I could live there!

What do you think? No sooner said than done! The next day, our plane could not take off from La Palma airport due to strong winds, and all passengers were taken … to the Taburiente Playa hotel, where we had to spend another day.

Compared to the aparthotel Las Olas, which is clearly aimed at tourists, Taburiente Playa felt more like a hotel for business people. I can’t say for sure if this is good or bad. On the one hand, the rooms look more solid (although it would be time to replace some pieces of furniture and plumbing with new ones). On the other hand, the usual kitchen and a kettle were not enough for us 🙂

Inside the hotel is literally immersed in greenery.

The view from most of the rooms is excellent. The sandy beach is 3 minutes walk.

The food at the Taburiente Playa seemed to me to be very worthy. For breakfast, lunch and dinner we were offered a buffet with a very large selection of dishes. The restaurant itself also turned out to be quite spacious – despite the large influx of guests, no one had to wait at the entrance until a table was free.

What was disappointing about this hotel was the attitude of the staff. Just imagine: 200 passengers are checking into a hotel (our entire plane and people from the flight to Berlin). All these people are expected at home in a couple of hours, and they need to get in touch somehow. The hotel itself, in theory, does not suffer from these unexpected guests, but on the contrary. And what does he do? That’s right, turn off wi-fi! And to all requests to turn it on, he answers that “today there are too many guests.”

My resume: despite the fact that the hotel itself is not bad, I did not feel like a welcome guest here. Fortunately, there are many hotels, villas and apartments on La Palma, all kinds and different! So next time – either a villa (for example, in the village of Villa de Maso), or another hotel.
