Best Places to Visit in Lanzarote
The Canary Islands off the north-western coast of Africa are a volcanic chain stemming, many geologists believe, from a so-called hot spot. This is basically a crack in the Earth’s crust, allowing magma to billow upwards to the surface.
Perhaps the finest place in the Canaries to appreciate this fiery heritage is the island of Lanzarote, the most north-easterly island in the archipelago and one that boasts the most recent volcanic activity.
From home grown wine to geysers and lava tubes, Lanzarote is one of the world’s most distinctive travel destinations—a dreamlike island not to be missed.
If you planning a break to Lanzarote here are some essential places to add to your itinerary.
1. Timanfaya National Park
Visitors to Timanfaya National Park in the west can intimately experience a surreally beautiful, lava-blasted landscape stemming from huge eruptions in the mid-1700s—the biggest in the Canaries during the historical era. Landforms include numerous cones and craters as well as vast raw plains (called malpais) representing the magma sheets that spilled westward toward the coastline. Timanfaya is a stunning place, but don’t neglect a visit to the older volcanic countryside of northern Lanzarote.
2. Monumento Natural del Malpais de la Corona
The Monumento Natural del Malpais de la Corona is a preserve equally renowned for its own unique topography.
Eruptions from the broad, now-extinct Monte Corona volcano several millennia ago created extensive lava flows, the petrified remains of which now harbour one of the world’s grandest lava tubes: the Cueva de los Verdes.
This six-kilometre tunnel formed as the surface layers of a lava flow cooled and crusted around a molten interior. At nearly two dozen points along the tube, the crust collapsed, forming cavities—called ‘jameos’ here—which afford access to the subterranean channel.
Some of the jameos have been developed into unique tourist attractions. The Jameos del Agua, for example, has its own nightclub, while another section of the tunnel sports a concert hall—unforgettable destinations on Lanzarote holidays.
Remarkably, the Cueva de los Verdes continues under the coastal waters in the form of the 1.5-kilometer Tunnel of Atlantis. This mysterious extension of the Monte Corona lava conduit is the longest of the planet’s submarine lava tubes, and plays home to little-known organisms such as unusual annelid worms. The terrestrial reaches of the lava tube are also notable for their specialized fauna, which includes a blind, ghostly white endemic species of squat lobster.

Arrecife
Natural wonders anchor any visit to Lanzarote, but the human face of the island is also fascinating. The capital is the mid-sized city of Arrecife, which has an international airport.
4. Countryside
Escpaing the tourist hotspots and renting a car is a one of the best ways to get off the beaten track and experience life in rural Lanzarote. Agriculture and viticulture proceed here in a seemingly harsh landscape via ingenuity and long-honed practical traditions. One of Lanzarote’s defining sights is the vineyard studded with little arced rock walls, used to promote grapevine growth.
You can revel in the mesmerizing vistas of Lanzarote while reflecting on its volatile past—one emblematic of the Canary Islands as a whole. Roads wind through rough lava flats and rolling volcanic hills, with elegant Canary Island date palms or wild olives scattered on the horizon.
Peer down at a dark boulder pile and you might spot one of the island’s endemic wall lizards – a lucky and sharp-eyed traveller could glimpse a high-soaring Egyptian vulture, which exists here in the form of a unique subspecies.

Timanfaya National Park declared in 1974 covers a total area of 51 square kilometers and is located in the southwest of the island in the cities of Yaiza and Tinajo. The last volcanic eruption took place between 1730 and 1736. The park has over 25 volcanoes with some amazing sights: Montañas del Fuego, Montaña Rajada, Caldera del Corazoncillo .
Until now there is volcanic activity, on the surface in hot spots the temperature reaches 100-120 degrees Celsius, 13 meters deep – 600 degrees.
The volcanic habitat is in an early stage of ecological succession (with a total of about 180 plant species), making it an excellent site for studying colonization and evolutionary development.
Due to the lack of rainfall, there is very little erosion on the island and the volcanic landscape is preserved as if it had recently erupted – a truly unique, breathtaking sight.
Guarding the National Park (at the entrance) stands a “billboard” with the famous “El Diablo” logo, designed by Cesar Manrique and made from pieces of wood from old boats.
There is a “volcanic restaurant” in the area, also called “El Diablo” . It is actually located on an active volcano. The restaurant’s chefs prepare food using the heat generated by volcanic activity in the earth’s interior (underneath the restaurant).
The restaurant was established in 1970 also by Cesar Manrique. He built grills into the ground for the purpose of cooking various meat and fish dishes.
Due to the characteristic natural conditions during the construction of the structure, instead of the foundation (digging is not possible in these conditions), nine basalt layers were laid out for the foundation.
This is a very famous volcanic restaurant that serves excellent local cuisine. In addition, from it you can appreciate the beauty of the island landscape in its entirety. El Diablo has a small glazed area called the Jardín Muerto (Dead Garden), which shows the skeleton of a camel and the trunk of an old tree, symbols of the harsh environment.
Jameos del Agua formed on the northeast coast after Monte de la Corona erupted approximately 3000 years ago. One of the world’s most interesting natural galleries, part of a section of the volcanic channel that extends from Monte de la Corona to the sea, connecting lava caves and underground grottoes. Hameos in the “indigenous” language of the island means “cave”.
Jameos del Agua overlook the Atlantis Tunnel, the largest and deepest (1.

Thanks to Cesar Manrique and Jesús Soto, who have transformed the gallery into a fantastic underground complex, visitors are captivated by the incredible wonders to the fullest. Man-made intervention in natural space seeks to help visitors to listen to nature, learn to contemplate it. Going down the spiral staircase, you pass through lush vegetation, huge cacti to the first level, Hameo Grande, a volcanic bubble 100 meters long and 30 meters wide without a roof.
As a result of infiltration of sea water, a natural lake with clear water was formed, in which the world’s only species of blind crayfish (“chameitos”) developed. Munidopsis Polymorpha – symbol of Jameos del Agua . These crabs are very sensitive to changes in the lagoon, noise and light affect them. They are also susceptible to rust, which can kill them, so throwing coins into water is prohibited.
At the base of Jameo Grande is a large corridor extending into the next volcanic bubble, Hameo Chico . Passing in the open air, you are amazed at the magnificent pool of emerald water, created in the volcanic rock and surrounded by an exotic garden. Two bars, a restaurant and a dance floor are set in rocky depressions. The abundant vegetation in this space, contrasting with its greenery against the blackness of the volcanic rock, makes an indescribable impression. Hameo Chico is home to the “concert cave”, an amazing hall with amazing natural acoustics. Concerts and ballet performances are held here, as well as the famous Lanzarote Visual Music Festival. The auditorium can accommodate up to 600 people.
Jameos del Agua is perhaps the finest example of the fusion of man-made art and natural wonder .
