Catch the taxi boat

A great walk down to the old town with several restaurants to relax in. We caught the taxi boat to Puerto Calero which doesn’t take long but the views of the coastline and out to sea are worth the very reasonable fare

Nice walk

We got a taxi to the old town harbour area and had a walk around,and stopping for a cool drink overlooking the sea,then we walked a little and found a nice little Irish bar which was rather popular

Ok if you need to kill a bit of time

A water taxi return trip for two adults from Puerto Del Carmen to Puerto Calero cost 32 Euros and takes about 20 mins each way. We tried it as it was marketed as one of the things to do when the market is on but we weren’t very impressed.

The water taxi is good, nice and clean with good views of the rocky coast along the way, but once it docks in Calero it took us about 30 mins to visit all the market stalls (which was about 12) and then needed to kill time in a bar until the next water taxi back. Bought a couple of presents whikst there so wasn’t a totally wasted trip but not one i’d recommend unless you’re looking to kill a bit of time. Nice looking little marina but you’ve seen and done it all in less than an hour.

Nice area found it quite expensive to eat. Fiesta was on, so quite busy. Great views from certain restaurants. Worth a visit if only to watch the sunset.

Definitely visit the old town harbour! It’s so stunning overlooking the sea with roof top bars and lovely restaurants for a bit of a traditional experience.

Worth a visit as its the old part of Town.

Nice just to have a walk round and sit during the daytime to have a drink and people watch for a short spell. Has got very touristy over the years and now not the best place to Dine at night when there are better & cheaper choices around the town. However good for young people at night with the different music offerings and the buzz which exists in the area. Restaurant touts work the front to get you in but a smile and a no thank you usually does the trick.

Good places to each, drink, dance and watch the sun go down

Walked round help many times, always good on a nice day. Lots of places to eat, drink, dance, listen to bands and be generally entertained.

Sophie, thanks for helping our readers. I guess we should start off by asking what would you say would be the advantages to living in Puerto del Carmen compared to other Lanzarote towns?

Puerto del Carmen has recently undergone a revamp aiming to make it more upmarket. With this it has brought new shops and restaurants, ranging from exclusive to chain.

Would the area not suit certain types of people, i.e. are there any possible downsides?

It is a busy and touristic area, most properties within close proximity to the beach have small outside spaces. It would not suit someone looking to get away from the bustle.

What proportion of the local population are Spanish?

As it is a tourist area I would say more international than Spanish but there are Spanish living in the area.

What are your favourite things to do in the area?

The shopping is good. In the Old Town of Puerto del Carmen there is a shopping center called Biosfera. The main beach is large so doesn’t get too crowded. The sea is normally very calm which is great for swimming.

Can you give us some insider tips to the best bars or restaurants?

Taverna del Nino, located in the Varadero, Old Town Puerto del Carmen. Is wonderful for Spanish food and Montaditos.

Enjoy, located on the main strip is great for modern Asian food. It does a mean Thai green curry!

Mardeleva, located in Old Town Puerto del Carmen is great for tapas and fresh sea food.

For night life and a dance the varadero is good, bars like Heiniken and San Miguel. But be warned they don´t get going till 1am!!

For AMAZING cocktails go to La Delicatezza Cocktail Bar on the main strip.

Are there many facilities such as doctors and dentists, shops etc?

Yes there are a selection of private doctors and the social security health centre in Puerto del Carmen. There are several dentists and a veterinary clinic in Tias which is less than 10min drive away. There are all types of shops, there wouldn’t be much you couldn’t find in Puerto del Carmen.

Are there smaller villages nearby that you might also recommend?

Tias is residential area popular with English residents. Puerto calero is along the coast and has more exclusive properties. Macher has larger fincas and villas that are more isolated.

What are the nearest international schools and how good are they?

Daos is located in Matagorda, an area to the east of Puerto del Carmen. It is a Spanish-speaking international school. Colegio Hispanico Britanico is located between Puerto del Carmen and Tias and is a large English school following the English curriculum.

Is crime an issue for expats?

The area is quite safe and there is little crime.

Coming onto buying property, what is the market like now in terms of prices going up, or down or staying the same?

With apartments, property prices have gone up and will continue to improve at a steady rate. On larger more expensive property, the prices haven´t gone up as much but there are far more people looking and ready to buy.

Is this a good time to buy and are there any repossessions or very cheap properties still available to buy?

It’s a great time to buy. With the tourist interest in this area you can get a great return if you were to holiday let the property when you are not in it. Some apartments offer a 4% APR. Repossessions are slowly let on to the market by the banks but there aren´t as many anymore, normal property prices are still good enough that you can still buy a bargain.

What urbanisations are there and can you describe each one and how they might differ from each other?

The Old Town of Puerto del Carmen is the oldest area, it has charm and still a lot of Spanish live in this area. The Main strip offers lots of bars, restaurants and shops that all overlook the long beach and sea, behind these are houses and apartments. Los Mojones is an area slightly set back from the coast, it boast large villas with great views to the mountains and sea, it is an exclusive area. Matagorda is towards the airport and offers lots of apartment complexes.

How much are the typical property prices in Puerto del Carmen for apartments, villas etc?

As a rough guide you could buy a 1-bedroom apartment from 70,000 to 100,000 euros with sea views. Two-bedroom apartment for 110,000 to 150,000 euros with sea views. Villas start at about 250,000 euros; for a detached larger villa with a pool you would be looking at around 350,000 euros. Saying this there are still properties that come up under these guide prices.

In this article I have collected hotels in the resort areas of Turkey, Greece, Spain and Portugal, which I came across while planning this or that trip. I hope that my choice will help you decide where to go this summer and where to stay.

SPAIN

Alondra Villas y Suites, Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

On Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands with Martian landscapes, my husband and I rested 2 years ago. I saved this hotel for myself in case I decide to go to the Canary Islands again: I liked the design and large area of the rooms and villas, the presence of their own and fairly large swimming pools, good equipment in each room, including kitchens with everything you need, washing machines and dishwashers, free wireless internet access, barbecue facilities.

Edificio Puerto, Colonia Sant Jordi, Mallorca

I found this apartment a couple of years ago when I was preparing for a vacation with my mother-in-law. These are small but clean and modern apartments with great reviews, located 50 meters from the beach in Mallorca. The town of Colonia Sant Jordi is a quiet place, in the comments on booking.com, many complain that it is even too quiet, and quite remote from Palma. Plus or minus – you decide. A definite plus is the opportunity to rent an apartment with 2 bedrooms, which is rare. My friend vacationed in Mallorca last year and was delighted: the food, the sea, the architecture of Palma, and the shops made an indelible impression on her and her mother.

Playas del Ray, Santa Ponsa, Mallorca

A fairly simple hotel with a cheerful design and fresh renovation located in Santa Ponsa, half an hour from the capital of the island. The resort is popular and lively, but not as exuberant as Magaluf, beloved by English teenagers. Guests of the hotel praise its convenient location for exploring the island, proximity to the beach and friendly staff.

GREECE

Sun Anemos Resort, Oia, Santorini

I have been dreaming of going to Santorini, this quintessence of Greece for many years, I really want to see the place that, in my opinion, everyone has seen. .. everyone except me! I liked this apartment for its large area, novelty of the furnishings, very cute and very Greek in spirit design, excellent reviews (9.4 out of 10 on booking.com). You can walk to the beach, but you will need a car to get to the center of Oia. However, as far as I understand, in Santorini you can’t see anything at all without a car.

Tamarix Del Mar Suites, Kamari, Santorini

Another option in Santorini, a small hotel with 25 rooms and a private pool, located within walking distance of Kamari Beach, which is praised for its clean water and comfortable, though and pebbly, the entrance to the water. An option for those who want to combine the advantages of a hotel and the privacy of an apartment.

Hotel Tireas, Thira, Santorini

I was attracted by the presence of terraces in many rooms, as well as incredible views of the sea and mountains. The design of the hotel is the way I like it: everything is white, with a feeling of spaciousness. I imagine what a pleasure it is: to go out in the morning, just waking up, to the balcony, and see the sea and the most beautiful Greek island from a height. The hotel may not be suitable for travelers with children or the elderly as it appears to have steps leading up to it. However, as I understand it, Santorini is not a flat island at all.

Poseidonion Grand Hotel, Spetses

One day I will go to Athens, and not in the summer when there is incredible heat, but somewhere in October. I will visit the ancient city, and then I will take a ferry and in a couple of hours I will leave on the island of Spetses, which is part of the Saronic Islands. Here the sea and pines, the Athenian beau monde, moorings for yachts. I will stay at this hotel, standing right on the embankment – respectable, with a history that remembers famous guests.

TURKEY

Stella Aparts Residence, Fethiye

I considered this option last year when I was thinking about where to take my dad. This is an apartment complex located in a modern building in Fethiye. I liked the presence of a large swimming pool, fresh renovation, the ability to rent apartments with both one and two bedrooms, proximity to Dalaman airport, a sandy beach 10 minutes walk. It seems to me that such apartments are a cool option for those who go to the sea for the whole summer with children.

Saylam Suites, Kas

Saylam Suites is just that other Turkey that I really love. Located in the town of Kas, which slopes down to the sea from a hill, this aparthotel offers rooms with their own kitchenettes. Decorated in a contemporary, slightly ethnic style, rooms offer panoramic sea views. There is a beach in Kas itself, but I consider this place as a starting point for traveling around Turkey: arrive at the end of September, when there are already few tourists, take a car, drive around the area, choosing the best beach, dine with fresh fish overlooking the yachts, drive or follow the Lycian Way.

Marti Hemithea Hotel, Marmaris

Marti Hemithea is a respectable hotel 25 km from Marmaris, with its own beach, a large pool in the shade of pine trees, a water sports center and its own marina. You can go for a walk to Marmaris: there is a long promenade along the sea, full of cafes and restaurants, a small old town with a fortress overlooking the sea. In Marmaris itself, I rested about nine years ago, and I would be glad to come to those parts again.

Macakizi Hotel, Bodrum

My favorite travel magazine CNTraveller Russia praises this hotel. A stylish and respectable hotel, loved by Istanbul jet-setters, is located half an hour from Bodrum and has a very unusual beach: six pontoons with wooden terraces, sun loungers and umbrellas. I don’t know about you, but I really love the descent into the water from the ladder and not having to shake the sand off my feet. But for those who do not know how to swim, this bathing option is not suitable. In reviews of the hotel on the network, guests praise the excellent Turkish cuisine, which specializes in the restaurant operating at Macakizi.

PORTUGAL

Real Marina Residence, Olhão

I was in Portugal once, I didn’t get to the south of the country, but after another inspiring article in one of the magazines, I decided to go again and to Olhão. Portugal is washed by the cold Atlantic Ocean, but Olhão is located next to the Ria Formosa reserve, where the water warms up a little better and there are no strong waves. I liked the apart-hotel for its huge apartments, modern furnishings, panoramic windows and large terraces. The city itself is famous for its artistic atmosphere – it is very fond of creative people, mainly the British.

Areias do Seixo, Santa Cruz

This hotel has an amazing concept: modern appearance and technical equipment are combined with environmental awareness and natural materials. There is a pond with a terrace where you can drink a glass of wine, a private garden, vegetables and fruits from which guests are served in the restaurant, a cinematheque.
