Cascada de Los Colores

There are several ways to reach the Cascada de Los Colores, which is a colorful waterfall within the Taburiente National Park. One can drive up to a certain, and then will have to hike through the park and climb some rocks, making it a place not easily accessed by everyone. What awaits is a stunning display of colors from green to orange and yellow, as the water runs down the rocks – a spectacular view one shouldn’t miss.

Cumbre Vieja

Getting to Los Cancajos from the airport

When arriving at the Santa Cruz de la Palma Airport, visitors will have a few options for getting to Los Cancajos. One of these is by bus, which goes straight from the airport, to the town of Los Cancajos, taking only about 16 minutes.

Another option is for guests to rent a car from the airport, and simply make the short drive themselves. This option would make a lot of sense for those who plan to rent a car for their stay in La Palma. Offering free Wi-Fi and an outdoor swimming pool, La Caleta is a traditional Canarian-style apartment complex.
Due to volcanic activity on the island this hotel was not in use but they gave us a free upgrade to its sister hotel. The staff, facilities etc were fantastic. We had booked Bed and Breakfast, but also then paid extra for the buffet Evening meal which was excellent and great value for money.

The weather in Los Cancajos did not please us the next day either. Again there was a piercing wind, and it was drizzling. We decided to take a walk around the hotel and along the promenade and see what happens next with the weather.

At first it was still quite warm,

…but then the weather got worse.

There is a small grotto under the hotel building. How canarians are not afraid to build so close?

Deserted beach.

Here we noticed three scuba divers trying to enter the raging ocean. They watched and did not know whether to cry or laugh. It looked very funny from the outside! But at the same time it was so scary for them, because each new wave knocked them down!

The waves hit almost to the embankment wall! And in good weather, this place is one of the best beaches in La Palma!

When we were finally convinced that we had nothing to do in Los Cancajos, we went to the mountains.

The further we climbed the mountains, the more pines became.

And here we are above the clouds.

On the way, our attention was drawn to the sign – “Do not touch”. At first, we didn’t even understand what was actually not allowed to be touched. But after reading carefully, we understood the reason.

You cannot touch this inconspicuous flower, because it grows only on La Palma and has been under protection since 2006 due to the threat of destruction!

The name of this unique plant is Lotus pyranthus or pico de cernícalo in Spanish.

Reference: “ The genus Lotus is represented in the Canary Islands by 24 species, of which 17 are endemic, six more are of Mediterranean origin, and the last species, L. uliginosus, is quite widespread in Eurasia. Particularly interesting is the group from 4 endemic species, sometimes classified as a separate genus Heinekenia.Two of them – L. berthelotii and L. maculatus – are endemic to the island of Tenerife, and the other two (L. eremiticus and L. pyranthus) grow only on the island of La Palma “

And upon closer examination, this inconspicuous flower turned into a real natural masterpiece. An unopened bud looks like a quiet flame of a candle, and a blossoming one looks like the tongues of a fire. This is very symbolic, because the bird-foot grows on an island that arose from lava and fire as a result of numerous eruptions, and is destroyed due to forest fires (….

We went a little further and saw a whole field of these flowers, fenced from all sides

And we drove further into the mountains to the top of Los Muchachos.

The farther we climbed into the mountains, the more cloudy became. We were driving in fog, the temperature dropped to 2-3 degrees.

Having reached the fork in the road to Los Muchachos and Nieves Peak, we saw that the road to the observatory was blocked. We found out that there was freezing rain in the mountains at night, all the roads above are covered with an ice crust, and the passage is closed for an indefinite period. Everyone was turned around and not allowed further. Thus, we went to the peak of Nieves.

Because of the cloudiness, all the beauties are not visible, but the place turned out to be amazing: we walked in the clouds among the huge pine trees, and there was no one else besides us!

In the afternoon we went home. Having left the clouds, we again saw the sun and the endless ocean.

We spent the afternoon in the capital of La Palma, Santa Cruz de la Palma.

The next morning we drove to the north of the island, but through the favorite beach of Tazacorte. There were only a few days of our stay on the island, and we so wanted the sea, sun and sand!

By the second half of the day a strong wind had risen, waves made their way even through breakwaters, even heavy black sand rose into the air and pricked the whole body. But we were not upset at all, because. in front of us was the north of the island, its greenest part.

Such wonderful views awaited us on the way!

The whole north of the island is full of colors, because March is the time of wild flowering. Almonds, cherries, poppies, chamomile blossomed along the roadsides….

The north of the island met us with clouds and rain.

Near the town of Puntagorda, a deep gorge with amazing acoustics was found. Music was playing on the other side of the gorge, and the audibility was such that it seemed that the music was behind us! And what an echo!

We found a tangerine tree, could not resist and picked Canary tangerines) They never ate tastier!

And so we arrived at the ethnographic center and cultural park La Zarza.
