Lanzarote Timanfaya Park facts and information
Timanfaya National parks cover a quarter of the Lanzarote island, Timanfaya was created over around 6 years of volcanic eruptions which were constant on the island between 1730 and 1736. There was a smaller eruption in 1824 also. There were around 2,000,000,000m of lava that covered Lanzarote from the 100 different volcanos.
Nobody was recorded to have died from the eruptions but a lot of the land and livestock was ruined so many emigrated to other parts of the world.
Timanfaya National Park has played a significant role in preparing for the Nasa Mars landing, so much so that the first place Nasa touched down in Lanzarote they have named Timanfaya so if you want to say you know what Mars looks like then just go to Timanfaya in Lanzarote.
Islote de Hilario (The heart of Timanfaya Lanzarote Park)
On all of the Timanfaya National park tours, you will visit the Montanas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) The centre at Islote de Hilario will show you the live volcano, let you see the geothermal demonstrations and take a luna route around Timanfaya National Park.

TIMANFAYA NATIONAL PARK DESCRIPTION & INFORMATION
Throughout the Timanfaya National Park originates what volcanologists call “geothermal anomalies”. This means that unusual surface temperatures can rise from the subsoil.
Inside the National Park, there is an approximately 14km path to do “The Volcanoes Route”.
The camel ride on the volcano is, without doubt, one of the most classic images of Lanzarote, combining the exoticism of transport with the spectacular surroundings.
The Fire Mountains are a walk on the Moon without going off planet Earth. Born after the violent volcanic eruptions in the south of Lanzarote between the years 1730 and 1736, giving rise to the Timanfaya National Park, the Fire Mountains possess the beauty of desolation and offer a symphony of ocher colors that never leaves the viewer indifferent, who feels quite small next to this imposing and living art work. And is here where Manrique stamped, again, his signature creating a space where art, man and nature harmoniously coexist. From the bowels of the earth, the Hilario Islet rises, majestically, looking out over a sea of lava of about 200sq km on which 25 craters rise and remain asleep. There, Manrique unleashed his imagination and devised El Diablo restaurant to give life to that land. From that extraordinary integration between human creation and nature was born what is, without doubt, one of the most impressive works of art in the world. While the El Diablo stone oven uses the natural heat provided by this land to prepare unique dishes, ten meters deep, there are 300ºC degrees.
The extreme heat slides to the surface and is reflected through unforgettable experiences that amaze the visitor. The natural and artistic complex of The Fire Mountains allows the visitor to do the Volcano Route on board specially equipped vehicles to offer a unique experience among some of the natural wonders that this unique lunar landscape hides.

Original taken from diman7777 in Lanzarote. Timanfaya National Park
Today I’ll tell you about the Timanfaya National Park, which is the hallmark of Lanzarote.
Timanfaya National Park is an area that most accurately reflects the essence of the amazing island of Lanzarote. The park attracts an incredible flow of tourists who want to admire the bewitching landscapes. There are about 220 dormant volcanoes in the park. nine0007 Under the cut, I suggest looking at the unusual nature of the park, in some places reminiscent of Martian landscapes.
01. The park is quite easy to find, there are many signs showing the direction on the island.
02. The road to the park is picturesque, as if you are driving on another planet…
03.
04. Time seems to have stopped here. Lava destroyed all life.
05.
06. At the entrance to the park you need to pay an entry ticket for 8 euros, which includes a visit to the Islote de Ilario hill and a bus tour of Timanfaya Park. nine0007
07. Islote de Hilario hill with restaurant, gift shop and large parking lot. There are also guided tour buses from this place. This place is named after a hermit who lived here for 50 years with his only friend – a camel…
08. Volcanic shows are held on the site in front of the restaurant. As park workers say, at a depth of several meters the temperature reaches 600°C! The volcano does not sleep, and you can see this with your own eyes. The park ranger throws a handful of dry grass into a shallow hole – and not a minute passes before it flares up. nine0007
09.
10. Water is poured from a bucket into a pipe dug into the ground – and in a moment the water shoots out in the form of a powerful geyser.
11. In the restaurant you can try dishes cooked on a simple volcanic grill. Meat and fish are not fried on fire or coals, but on natural geothermal heat from the bowels of the earth.
12. Chicken legs look delicious.
13. Excursions around the park are carried out on such buses. One big minus is to take pictures only through the window, which affects the quality of the photos. nine0007
14. We get on the bus and go on an excursion that lasts about 35 minutes. The guided tour, accompanied by audio commentary in Spanish, English and German, passes through the most interesting places in the park.
15. Lava field.
16. Vegetation and climate have not had time to change the beauty of this black and red land, which has not been touched by the human hand.
17. There are roads on Mars :))
18. This volcano is well preserved. nine0007
19. The eruptions that created the Timanfaya National Park and changed the face of Lanzarote forever took place almost 300 years ago.
20. For six years, from 1730 to 1736, many volcanoes shook the earth, throwing out lava flows and red-hot pieces of rock. The largest eruptions in the history of Lanzarote are known thanks to detailed descriptions by impromptu chroniclers, one of whom was the parish priest of the village of Yaiza. nine0007
21. Like a dead wasteland covered with ashes.
22. Volcanic eruptions not only created new landscapes, but also destroyed life in some settlements of the island of Lanzarote.
23. Local priest Lorenzo Curbelo, who refused to leave the house, kept a kind of chronicle almost from the very epicenter of events. It is thanks to his detailed records that we now know about what happened on the island in those days.
24. “Near Timanfaya the earth split and a huge fire-breathing mountain grew. The terrible spectacle went on for three weeks. A few days later, other craters opened and poured out lava that buried the villages of Timanfaya, Rodeo and Mancha Blanca. nine0007 On September 6th, a high rock deflected the lava flow and changed its direction from north to northwest. This led to the death of the villages of Maretes and Santa Catalina.
On September 11, new fiery rifts opened. Liquid lava flooded the city of Maso, and six days later it reached the shore and poured into the sea with a roar, scattering terrifyingly beautiful cascades of sparks…”
25. In 1824 the eruption repeated, but with less force. Since then, volcanoes have been dormant, and amazing lunar landscapes have become the hallmark of Lanzarote and its main attraction. nine0007 A significant part of the territory changed beyond recognition, in 1974 was declared a specially protected natural park Timanfaya of national importance.
26. If it weren’t for the blue sky, many of the photos taken in Timanfaya Park could pass for landscapes of the planet Mars.
27. Even on the dead earth, new life is reborn – stubborn plants again master the harsh territory.
28. And our bus tour comes to an end and we return to the car park. nine0007
29. On the road leading to the park, there is a place where you can take a short camel ride for a fee.
30. The masters of the desert roll tourists on the ashes from volcanoes.
31.
32.
33. Caravan.
34.
35. The caravan leaves…
There is such a beautiful unusual park in Lanzarote. In the next post there will be planes again, this time from Zurich. nine0007 Thank you all for your attention!
