There are many interesting natural attractions in Gran Canaria. One of the most beautiful places is the dunes of Maspalomas. This sandy area on the ocean covers an area of more than 400 hectares. Maspalomas Dunes have been declared a nature reserve.

One of the most unusual natural attractions of the island is Roque Nublo. It is a rock in the very center of the island 60 meters high. The rock resembles an index finger and many interesting legends are associated with it. It’s worth climbing the rock to enjoy the wonderful view.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of Tenerife. Santa Cruz is a large city with many interesting places and attractions. You must visit Plaza de Espana located on the site of the castle of San Cristobal. If you love greenery you can go for a walk in one of the parks: Garcia Sanabria, La Granja or Palmetum. All of them are interesting in their own way and worthy of attention. Santa Cruz is a home to one of the main attractions of the Canary Islands — the Auditorio de Tenerife Concert Hall built by Santiago Calatrava in 2003. The concert hall is considered one of the most significant works of modern architecture.

On the island La Gomera has a large number of unique places that should definitely be on the agenda when you are here. Attractions are presented in the form of ancient buildings, unique creations of nature, beaches, such as: Garajonay National Park, Gran Rey Valley, Los Organos Basalt Rocks.

    MoreHide

La Gomera is valued by tourists primarily for its pristine nature. Landscapes amaze with the greenery of steep slopes, which are cut by parallel winding lines of terraces. Such a relief of Homera has always made it difficult to communicate between the villages. Until now, many areas of the island have retained their virginity. Most impressive is the unexpectedly dense vegetation on the central plateau, where a thousand-year-old laurel forest stands in eternal fog. nine0005

La Gomera a true natural relic. In the preglacial period, laurel thickets occupied a vast territory of the subtropical zone. Today, this type of forest is found only in Macronesia (Madeira Islands, Cape Verde Islands, Wild Islands, Azores and Canary Islands). On La Gomera, unlike other islands of the Canary archipelago, there have been no volcanic eruptions in the last two million years. Therefore, the ancient flora is better preserved here. The highlands of the island have become a giant greenhouse that has given shelter to almost 400 species of plants that disappeared in Europe and Africa millions of years ago. Among them there are some that you will not find anywhere else in the world. nine0005

Behind the stern – the Atlantic Ocean!

The yacht “Chelyabinsk”, which started in early December from Cyprus, was tested by a storm in the Mediterranean Sea, at the end of 2019city entered the vastness of the Atlantic. Having celebrated the New Year and Christmas holidays in the Canary Islands, on January 10, 2020, the crew started from Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the direction of the Cape Verde Islands (Cape Verde) and by January 19, the Chelyabinsk yacht arrived at the island of San Vicente (Cape Verde). Verde). After a short stop, the crew again went to sea. The yacht crossed the equator, and her crew saw a new sky – the sky of the southern hemisphere. The polar star disappeared over the horizon. The winds around the equator were unstable, and this somewhat delayed our travelers. nine0005

Here are a few words from the radio operator-translator Anna Mayorova:

It was not an easy transition. Estimated travel time was 15 days, but it turned out 21! So it happens: the fate of a sailor is in the hands of the master of the Ocean: his winds and currents. We passed the ITC (Intratropical Convergence Zone). It is also the equatorial calm zone (and it is also called “nightmare”). We crossed the equator! After the VZK, the wind was oncoming (this is bad). Therefore, we moved slowly, in tacks (as if in a zigzag). And on February 1 we entered the Benguela. The yacht was mercilessly beaten by the wave. A couple of days went with a strong roll. Moving around the yacht has become again like in the Mediterranean Sea – it looks like a tightrope walk: constantly in search of balance. In general, the elements did not particularly rage, but they did not favor either. And finally, land! nine0005

On the evening of February 11, the yacht arrived in Jamestown Bay (Saint Helena).

Yacht captain Vladimir Gornov, Alexei Zainullin and Anna Mayorova were received by the island’s governor, Mr. Philip Rushbrook.

He invited them to his residence, told them about the history of the island and the life of Napoleon in exile. In turn, the captain of the yacht told the governor about the purpose of navigation and presented the head of the island with a piece of the world-famous Chelyabinsk meteorite.

The crew had the opportunity to wander around the mountainous island, which is especially pleasant after a long ocean crossing – to feel the solid ground under your feet and see the variety of colors, breathe in the smells of the earth. nine0005

The crew of the yacht is preparing for the passage to the southern tip of Africa (Cape Town), stocking up on provisions. It is difficult on the island with vegetables and potatoes, high prices for fruits – the remoteness of the island from the mainland affects.

February 15, the yacht “Chelyabinsk” headed for Cape Town. The voyage was not easy, an accident happened in the ocean – the yacht collided with a whale at night. However, the whale was not offended, and the yacht was not damaged.

On March 7 the Chelyabinsk yacht successfully arrived in Cape Town! Behind the stern is the Atlantic Ocean! nine0005

In a couple of weeks, the expedition will continue, the yacht will undergo a technical inspection, stock up on fuel and provisions in order to sail across the Indian Ocean to Australia. It is from Australia that the sailing stage of the yacht along the route of the tropical part of the Bellingshausen expedition will begin.

The crew of the yacht Chelyabinsk hopes to meet in Cape Town the Russian sailboats Kruzenshern, Sedov and Pallada, which, like the yacht Chelyabinsk, are sailing in honor of the 200th anniversary of F.
