10 Most Disappointing Things to Do in Spain – Interesting facts about Spain

Preparing for the next trip, we always, with trepidation in our souls, study a new region for ourselves, study guidebooks and the Internet in search of information about the most interesting sights. Arriving in a new city, we at a fast pace strive to see everything we read about, visit all significant points and have time to admire the brightest creations of our ancestors. Unfortunately, the result does not always live up to expectations and it happens that the significance of a particular place or object is exaggerated, but in reality does not produce the desired effect. Today we have prepared for you the TOP 10 most disappointing sights in Spain.

10. Opens our rating (or anti-rating) Jamon Museum (Museo de jamon) in Madrid. Visiting this place for those who are doing it for the first time, and not armed with prior information, entails a very simple and short emotion: “whoops …”. I want to go out, read the sign again and go in again, because there is a feeling that you have been deceived. And, indeed, behind the loud name “JAM MUSEUM” hides an ordinary store, or even an eatery where you can buy jamon and have a bite to eat on the go. But this institution has nothing to do with the museum, and the name is just a good publicity stunt.

9. In ninth place in our ranking Beach of the Cathedrals (Playa de las Catedrales), located in Galicia, on the coast of the province of Lugo. This is a truly unique place where, at low tide, beautiful, majestic stone arches, reminiscent of the arches of Gothic cathedrals, appear before beach visitors! But, all admiration fades when you, with a thrill in your soul, drive up to the beach, preparing your camera, and run into a huge line of equally enthusiastic tourists. Firstly, the beauty of the beach can not be contemplated at any convenient time, but only at low tide, and secondly, to visit the beach, you must first register on the site and present the relevant documents at the entrance. Thirdly, the number of people who want to admire the “Cathedrals” is so great that in line, surrounded by crowds and in conditions of an extremely limited amount of time, all the thrill of waiting slowly but surely fades into the background.

8. The next position is taken by natural parks in Spain . Unfortunately, most of them (but not all) disappoint their guests with the actual absence of anything interesting. Such parks, such as, for example, Cabo de Gata, Delta de Ebro, Doñana and some others are actively advertised by local tourist offices and are indeed home to many rare representatives of flora and fauna. But, unfortunately, there is nothing for an ordinary tourist to see, except for a small flock of flamingos, located at such a distance from the observation platforms that even ultra-modern lenses and binoculars do not help to admire the beauties of this bird.

7. Alcazaba in Málaga (Alcazaba de Málaga). Undoubtedly, this is a bright landmark for the city, but after visiting similar sites in neighboring Seville and Granada, where, of course, everyone traveling in the south of Spain will visit, the Alcazaba of Malaga fades against the background of its fellows and becomes a little sorry for the time spent on it.

6. In sixth place in our ranking is Guggenheim Museum (Museo Guggenheim) in Bilbao. The most beautiful, amazing building, in the style of deconstructivism, which is deservedly recognized as one of the most unusual in the world. But as much as it delights on the outside, it is just as disappointing on the inside. The collection of the museum of modern art, located within these surrealistic walls, is so boring and uninteresting that you want to go out and continue to admire the building from the outside.

5. Playa de Las Americas (Playa de Las Americas) is the most famous beach resort of the equally famous island of Tenerife, the Canary archipelago. Tenerife is an island of volcanic origin and Playa de las Americas is positioned as the unique and largest black sand beach on the island. In reality, this is a rather mediocre “rookery” of tourists, mostly not very aesthetic Englishmen and Germans, with fine sand of a dirty gray color, which does not delight at all. By the way, in Tenerife there are many much more beautiful and cozy beaches that are not so subject to advertising.

4. Pablo Picasso Museum (Museo Picasso) in Malaga. The southern city of Malaga is the birthplace of the artist and, of course, it would be foolish not to take advantage of this fact and not open a museum dedicated to Picasso’s work here. But not only is the museum not large and does not contain many of the artist’s famous paintings in its collection, Picasso’s work itself raises many questions, both among connoisseurs of painting and people who have nothing to do with this type of art. Therefore, most often, tourists leave this museum with a certain sediment of misunderstanding and disappointment.

3. Puerta del Sol in Madrid. The central square of the capital. Meetings and appointments are made here, excursions start from here, in ancient times there were gates leading to the city. But, unfortunately, today this place disappoints rather than delights. The main contingent at Peurta del Sol are people from China and African countries who sell all sorts of things and obsessively try to get an extra penny from a tourist. In addition, some repairs have been regularly carried out on the square recently. As a result, against the background of constant noise, construction floors, street vendors and even thieves, the beauty and grandeur of the main square of the country fade.

2. Las Ramblas (Las Ramblas) is the central tourist artery of Barcelona. All newly arrived tourists to the city strive to get here. And, indeed, the history of the city is connected with the boulevard, on both sides of it there are many museums and historical monuments, but here are just crowds of people, a lot of outlets selling everything in a row and, perhaps, the most powerful cluster of street thieves in all of Spain, acting most in sophisticated ways, make a walk along Las Ramblas not at all as romantic and pleasant as it seems to us when planning a trip.

1. The first place in our rating is taken by the great creation of the architect Antonio Gaudi in Barcelona – Sagrada Familia (La Sagrada Familia). It is worth noting that the Cathedral has consistently been included in similar world rankings over the past years. Many would argue that the Sagrada Familia is Gaudí’s indescribable contribution to the history, appearance and treasury of modern Barcelona. And they will be right. Unfortunately, visiting the cathedral often does not bring the pleasure of the equivalent cost of the entrance ticket and the crazy queue that must be defended. Moreover, the facades of the Cathedral carry much more cognitive information than the interior decoration.
