San­ti­a­go is famous for con­stant­ly high tem­per­a­tures year-round, but also in Ala­jeró it gets quite hot in sum­mer. Since 2004 I medi­ate hol­i­day homes, apart­ments and rental car book­ings on the small­est & west­ern Canary islands La Gomera, El Hier­ro and La Pal­ma. The first years I was liv­ing in Valle­hermoso (La Gomera) with my fam­i­ly. For some time the office is sit­u­at­ed in Ger­many, and I trav­el to the most beau­ti­ful islands in the sea sev­er­al times a year.

I know all accom­mo­da­tions, all house own­ers per­son­al­ly, take the pho­tos myself and reg­u­lar­ly check the qual­i­ty of the hous­es on site. My pro­gram is small and fine: I only offer hol­i­day homes in which I feel com­fort­able and which I can real­ly rec­om­mend. La Gomera Island, October 2013, part 2

In the previous part, we drove to the city of Playa de Santiago.

The town lies on the south coast of La Gomera and is located at several high altitudes. We lived near the coast, but Playa de Santiago continues up the slopes.

Somewhere at the top is the most luxurious hotel on the island, Hotel Jardin Tecina. It has an 18-hole golf course. Judging by its location, players regularly kick balls into the ocean. nine0003

We stayed at the Martell Hotel. This is a nice little apartment hotel where we were the only guests. We arrived at about 13:00, the time, according to local concepts, is absolutely non-working. The door is closed. I called on the phone, they answered me in Spanish. For the first time on this trip, we encountered a language problem. And then my wife Sasha confidently proved that it was not in vain that she studied Spanish for six months. She agreed on everything, the aunt came with the key, showed / explained everything.

Payment here is taken by itself only in cash. It was the most pleasant accommodation on this trip and the price is good – 45 euros. Breakfast, however, is not served. You have to go to the cafe “on the playa”. Wi-Fi is provided in the same cafe, it is called Los Chicos. And the Wi-Fi password was laschicas, it’s like a Spanish joke. Playa de Santiago is a very quiet and peaceful place.

There is an empty pebble beach. Small supermarket, cafes, restaurants. The most memorable place is the Italian restaurant Don Tomato. But in the photos there was some more touristy restaurant La Cuevita, it is located in the rock. We also had lunch there.

Every evening all the locals go to playa. Children play, parents sit around in cafes and just on benches. There are many children, on the first evening the local children took Polina to play. They played something like a “brook”. We had to jump over a huge dry palm branch. All the children were older, and Polya was terribly proud that she was taken. On the second evening, the game was somehow more difficult, Polina did not understand anything and the local children began to ignore her. She came up to me and asked, “Daddy, do you speak English? Tell the kids to take me to play.” I had to explain to the child that English cannot help here. Polina could not understand in any way that there is not only the Russian language and incomprehensible (English) language, but many different incomprehensible ones. nine0003

Playa de Santiago – La Grande Laguna
The next day we wanted to leave early, but suddenly clouds descended on our new island. In the morning we were going to swim on the new beach and drove to the far end of our village. There is a beach called Tapahuga with large pebbles that hurt to walk on, there didn’t seem to be big waves, but the swaying ocean water with these pebbles looked menacing. Polina was afraid to climb into the water even in my arms.

The beach is about 250 meters long and has a golf course overhanging it. Further to the east, the map promises a couple more beaches, but getting there by car is not so easy, although there is a road.

Then we drove through our town to the mountains, to the center of the island on the road to Alajero. The road climbs up the empty and treeless hills. Here is the airport of La Gomera. It was built in the 1990s and has a one and a half kilometer runway. From here, local flights to Tenerife are made. Airplanes fly once a day and land directly above the town, which causes a surge of emotions among the locals. I watched as local children joyfully ran through the streets, accompanying the plane with cries of “Avion!”. nine0003

There is not much space for an airfield here, the strip hangs over the ocean:

Around the road there are some rather dull “farms” with palm trees.

After the village of Alahero, we completely drove into thick gray clouds, and sparse bushes appeared around the road. The only trouble was that all these bushes were burnt.

A completely bleak picture. Forest fires are the scourge of the Canary Islands and especially La Gomera, islands where there is still something left to burn. nine0003

After the bushes, the forest began. And it became clear why the island is called green. Around us stood a strange magical forest. Something I’ve never seen before:

We arrived at a tourist stop called La Grande Laguna. This is such an unexpectedly flat place where one-day tourists are brought to look at the real Canary forest, there is a cafe, a picnic area, toilets, and once there was an intersection of all roads going to different ends of the island and an inn. nine0029 I left the girls at the cafe while I wandered around with the camera.
The same strange forest is still around:

Down in the valley towards the village of Chipude, the burnt forest begins again.

These birds live here, I don’t know what the name of the bird is:

Berries grow, like Cumberland.

I shocked the French tourists because I not only ate the berries myself, but also offered them to a three-year-old child. They looked at us and discussed in their own language, but they were afraid to eat the berries themselves. nine0003

I ran around for about 40 minutes while the girls ate at a local cafe for tourists, which they were extremely unhappy with.

From here we went down to the ocean, our path lay on the western coast of the island.
It cleared up and the following pictures opened up to our eyes:
