About Puerto de la Cruz
A charming seaside city on the coast of Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz has been luring in sunseekers since the 19th century. Spend your time soaking up the sun on volcanic beaches, visiting the contemporary art galleries and sipping on sangria in the central plaza.
Things to do in Puerto de la Cruz
Located at the northern tip of the island, Playa Martianez is known for its powdery black sand. It’s a great place to swim in the Atlantic Ocean, top up your tan or get lost in a good book. A large jetty helps to slow down the waves, which makes it a favourite with surf schools.
When you’ve had your fill of sun and sand, head to Jardin Botanico. The sprawling botanic garden was founded in 1788 and is filled with exotic plants from across the globe. You can admire English roses, check out tropical palms, explore the aromatic herb garden and gaze up at a towering 200-year-old Australian gum tree.
Risco Belle Aquatic Gardens is another fantastic place to escape the sunshine for a few hours. It’s anchored by a vast lawn strewn with tropical palms, citrus trees and birds of paradise flowers. You can also visit the lush aquatic gardens dotted with butterflies and herons.
As Spain’s first modern art gallery, the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo is a must-see attraction for culture buffs. It was opened in 1953 and houses a treasure trove of works from the likes of Cesar Manrique and Oscar Dominguez.
Getting around Puerto de la Cruz
Thanks to breezy promenades and pedestrian-friendly streets, the best way to get around Puerto de la Cruz is on foot. Renting a car is a popular option if you want to explore Tenerife at your own pace. Tenerife Norte is the closest airport, located around 30 minutes from Puerto de la Cruz.

Tenerife – Puerto de la Cruz
“The north coast of Tenerife is considered one of the greenest places in Spain. ”
I read this in one of the guidebooks).
I would not say that there is such, uh… lush… vegetation. Well, this is clearly not the Azores, and not Madeira. But when compared with the south of the island, the whole north, and in particular the area of the city of Puerto de la Cruz, looks very, very good).
It’s green there, especially in the eyes of northern tourists who are hungry for spring)))…
We lived there in a hotel located a little outside the city, and we went to the city itself a couple of times – either by bus or by taxi. The hotel had a free shuttle to the city, but back it seemed more convenient for us to take a taxi. You ask – why not by car? And parking is bad. It’s very bad.
I usually don’t order these, it was a troika, such a standard troika, but there were good reviews and photos of the views from the balcony were pleasing.
From our balcony there were such views. However, in order to have a real view of the sea – panoramic, you need to pay extra separately.
We stayed there for two nights, and in fact only for one day – on the first day we arrived at the hotel quite late.
And there were no other good hotels nearby – well, those that were not particularly expensive, and with good reviews, and there was parking, and quadruples …
Especially with parking there were problems. Apparently it’s better to book hotels in advance. Or maybe we were just unlucky, I don’t know…
Well, triple and triple, they are also sometimes good, I decided and ordered. The main thing is that the hotel had its own parking and its own shuttle to the city.
We arrive at the hotel in the evening, and immediately after checking in at the reception, I asked about a restaurant – where you can have dinner nearby. The receptionist was mega polite, but for some reason he was embarrassed. He began to think about where to “send” us … There, by the way, there is almost nothing very close to the hotel, you have to go to the city for a good restaurant. While he was thinking, a man standing next to him, apparently a client of the hotel, said – so you can have dinner here! – and pointed to the stream of people, just heading there.
– ???
– Yes, the receptionist said reluctantly (hiding his eyes), – we can do it too – dinner costs 10 euros… with wine…
Wow!
The fact that it also included wine – in unlimited quantities, as I understand it – made an impression! We doubted a lot (((… The food, apparently, is of such quality that there is no way without wine, hmm …
But we were so hungry! And we were so tired (((…
– We, please, have two dinners – I handed over the money…
– No, you go first and see if the receptionist didn’t let up.1033 I went downstairs – the restaurant was one floor down.
Well, I don’t know… The canteen is like a canteen. And what can you expect from a dinner at a 3-star hotel for 10 euros?
But there were merrily clinking plates and an inviting smell of food. ..
In short, we bought tickets for dinner and went downstairs.
Wine was free and was generously distributed in small decanters – apparently to drink what they called “food”.
However, the alcohol content of the wine quickly began to lose in this unequal struggle (((… A couple of hot dishes that were a buffet did not seduce us either by appearance or taste. As well as carelessly cut, slightly wilted vegetables, trying impersonate a salad…
In the end, we had dinner with a side dish. And bananas)…
By the way, about the garnish – in Tenerife they make quite tasty baked potatoes – papas arrugadas. It is called “wrinkled” – and so, in fact, it looks))). But delicious!
Of course, we didn’t have dinner there anymore.
However, we went there two more times for breakfast. Breakfasts were modest, but still in the morning it was easier to find something edible.
But that’s not the most important thing!
What we saw on the first evening in the restaurant shocked us – it was a real journey into the past!)))
Right now I am reading Bill Bryson’s book about England, where he writes that Englishmen older than 25 dress like Eastern Europeans. .. Hehe, he was not in this hotel!)))
No, really, there was a strong feeling that we are back in the 70s. I – in my own, Soviet))), and my husband – in Spain during the time of Franco. Well, or right after Franco). In those years, all-inclusive charter trips to inexpensive Spanish hotels were popular from Denmark. Even I still found them (about 30 years ago). We just didn’t know they still existed!
Come on!
The hotel was mostly Spaniards, and mostly pensioners, but there were also Germans, of various ages. It was the Germans who spoke to us several times, both in the elevator and at breakfast. Perhaps they took it for their own). They asked – attention! – how many weeks we have stayed here!!! WEEK! Ahh…
This hotel is an absolutely wonderful place for “people watching”. Such instances, I tell you!
Just don’t think, for God’s sake, that I have something against cheap hotels! Absolutely not.
And don’t think that I’m in any way condemning the people who live in it.
“I am responsible for what I write, not for what you read”!!! – Just in case).
I myself quite love inexpensive housing))) – and this hotel, by the way, was not especially cheap. Although I think that if you settle there for a week, then probably it should be cheap. Otherwise, what’s the point???
But still, it’s one thing to stay somewhere for one night, say, near the airport, if you have an early flight and you just need a place to sleep, or if there are no other possibilities purely because of logistics, but it’s quite another to come to such a place for few weeks!!! Or maybe months (replace by execution) … No, a special mentality is needed here. And by the people who lived there, it was evident…
In general, various comparisons with Kafka and Mann (especially with his “Magic Mountain”) climbed into our heads there. Such, you know, a grotesque on a grotesque…
In short, I highly recommend this hotel if you have the gift of writing and know how to notice interesting things! This hotel is just a goldmine in this sense).
You won’t regret it!)))
p.s. I have a photo inside the hotel on my phone, I was embarrassed to take pictures with the camera. The rooms are quite spartan, but it was clean and the beds were decent. So if you are interested in the name of the hotel – write))).
And I will continue about the city.
Puerto de la Cruz.
The city beach there is quite ordinary (for Tenerife) – ugly black …
It is not necessary to swim and sunbathe on this beach, there are other places nearby. In parallel with the beach, there is a pretty promenade and we made circles there – for appetite))).
Just like in the capital of the island, you can also swim here in the complex of pools with sea water – Lago Martiánez.
Due to the lack of beautiful (and convenient) beaches on the island, in 1977 it was decided to build this complex with 7 pools, designed by César Manrique.
Do you recognize his windmill?)
We did not go into the park itself. But from the outside it looks quite nice). As you would expect from Manrique, everything is tastefully decorated – the curved lines of the pools, the abstract black lava railings, the sculptures and the fountains… Plus, there’s plenty to drink (or just drink if you’re in AA), eat, and even entertain. yourself at night in some underground nightclub).
And from there…
Further, along the embankment, we pass by a tiny church – San Telmo.
A church was originally built on this site by fishermen in 1626 in honor of the patron San Pedro González Telmo. But after that, the church was destroyed more than once by the elements – the last time by a flood in 1826 (the victims, by the way, were buried there – under the floor of the church).
Some details and items from an older time have been preserved in the church.
On the other hand – there are many and completely modern details – the church is also open to German Catholics, and services are held there in German.
What is clear – the Canary Islands are just full of Germans!!!
and further along the embankment …
Someone prefers to swim and sunbathe without a beach …
and another church on the road – Nuestra Señora de la la Pena de Francia.
Built in 1684, but then still being completed (tower in 1898d).
Around the church there is a small park with a bust of the city of Betancourt (Agustin de Béthencourt), which was later closely connected with Russia – https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%91%D0% B5%D1%82%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%BA%D1%83%D1%80,_%D0%90%D0%B2%D0%B3%D1%83%D1%81%D1% 82%D0%B8%D0%BD_%D0%90%D0%B2%D0%B3%D1%83%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B2% D0%B8%D1%87
The fortress of San Felipe testifies to the time when pirates cruised around the island in the hope of gaining …
If you look at the sea from the cannons, you can be sure that approximately the same views were opened to the Spaniards in the 1500s). The same waves, the same sun)))…
Exhibitions are held in the fortress, if you are, of course, interested in them.
If not, you can swim in the city pool…
More from there…
Nearby is the old fishing port – Historico Muelle Pesquero Puerto de la Cruz.
With an old bastion, a sculpture of a fisherwoman and benches where you can watch the sunset…
By the way, I read that fishermen still go to sea from this harbor in the morning. I wonder if you can buy fish from them?
Nearby there is a small nice area with narrow streets and colorful houses.
As you probably already noticed from the photo above, there are paintings on many houses. Perhaps it is more correct to call them graffiti?
But somehow the language does not turn to call them such a word))) – many of them are perfectly drawn!
And from there.
