Things to do in Puerto de la Cruz in the Canary Islands

Puerto de la Cruz is located on the Northern part of the island of Tenerife and is part of the Canary Islands (Spain).

The city is known for tourism, but also for the many Northern Europeans who live in the city to survive the cold weather season in Northern Europe.

10 Interesting Things to do in Puerto de la Cruz

1. Visit the Second Best Zoo in the world: Loro Parque

If you are visiting Tenerife, then this place is a must to visit. Loro Parque is hands down one of the best zoos I have been to. The zoo has an extensive and diverse reserve of animal and plant species. You can see different creatures in the park for instance: chimpanzees, gorillas, sea lions, otters, jaguars, tigers, alligators, flamingos, exotic fish, piranhas, sea horses, and various sharks. Next to this, the zoo provides different shows during the day. This includes sea lion shows, dolphin shows, parrot shows and orca shows. The sea lion, dolphin and orca shows are really brilliant. Loro Parque was awarded by Trip Advisor as the first best zoo in Europe and the second best zoo of the world.

Loro Parque

Tip 1 for visiting Loro Parque

When you enter the park you can buy a ticket for the ‘Discovery Tour’ including or excluding lunch (you can also buy the ticket online before you go). This is definitely worth a buy. I bought this extra ticket and got a private tour in the ’employee only’ parts of the zoo.

During this tour I visited the sleeping complex of the Gorillas, learned about the food and behavior of the Gorillas, visited the water purification complex of the penguins and visited the day complex of the Orcas. The private tour at the complex of the Orcas was amazing. During the show you will see the Orcas from above, but during the tour you will go down in a complex and can watch the Orcas behind a window. Via this, you can see the Orcas at the same height as you. The Orcas are very curious animals and will come often to the window to interact with you.

I have never been that close to a big creature like the Orca. It was amazing! If you also want to experience this, I recommend you visit the zoo in the early morning or ask the ticket desk for the Discovery tour, because the later you will enter the zoo, the higher the chance that the tickets for this special tour will be sold out.

Tip 2 for visiting Loro Parque

Every 20 minutes a free express train departs from Reyes Católicos (city center Puerto de La Cruz) to Loro Parque. The last train leaves at 18.45 from Loro Parque.

Facts about Loro Parque
  • Loro Parque was awarded by Trip Advisor as the first best zoo in Europe and the second best zoo of the world.
  • The entrance fee is around € 34 for adults and € 23 for kids up to 11 years.
  • Children under 6 free entrance.
  • Loro Parque is open from 8.30AM to 6.45PM from Monday to Sunday.

2. Watch the Sunset or Sunbathe at Playa de Jardin

Playa de Jardin is the biggest and nicest beach of Puerto de la Cruz. Playa de Jardin means ´Garden Beach´ in English. The beach is surrounded by palm trees and different kinds of flora. At the beach you will find black sand. There is one big restaurant where you can have lunch or buy drinks and snacks. On the beach are sun beds, parasols, showers and toilets available. There is also a lifeguard, because sometimes the waves can become very high, which makes it dangerous to swim. When this is the case, a red flag will be shown at the beach. Playa de Jardin is definitely worth a visit. You can sunbathe but it is also a very nice beach to watch the sunset in the evening.

3. Enjoy a Day Swimming at El Lago Martianez

El Lago Martianez is an outside swimming pool complex and it really looks fantastic! There are four big pools and three small children’s pools. The pools are filled with filtered sea water. Moreover, there is a wide range of bars, restaurants, stalls and there is also a casino which you can visit during the day and night.

Facts about El Lago Martianez
  • El Lago Martiánez was awarded by Trip Advisor as the second best aquatic park in Europe in 2014.
  • The entrance fee is around €5.50 for adults and € 2.50 for kids up to 10 years.
  • El Lago Martiánez  is open from 10AM to 5PM from Monday to Sunday.

4. See the Skyline of Puerto de La Cruz

On top of the Martianez cliffs, you can see a spectacular view of Puerto de La Cruz. The viewpoint is behind hotel ‘Puerto de la Cruz’. You have to walk some stairs, but the view is amazing.

5. Visit La Plaza del Charco During the Day or Night

Plaza del Charco is a big square in the centre of Puerto de la Cruz. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, ice cream shops and smaller tourist shops located at this square. In the evening, the atmosphere is very cozy.

6. Celebrate Carnival like You Have Never Done Before

It’s amazing to celebrate Carnival in Tenerife. Usually the carnival is around February and the best place to celebrate carnival is in Santa Cruz. The celebration of carnival in Santa Cruz is second only to carnival in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil on the world party stage. Next to Santa Cruz, you can also celebrate carnival very well in Puerto de la Cruz. The parades are fantastic to see and there are many street parties. When you visit the center in the evening, you will find live music and people dancing everywhere.

The atmosphere is fantastic. Next to the dressing up, the carnival in Tenerife have some special traditions like:

  1. The men have to dress up like a female. Yes, you read it correctly. Most of the men will dress up like a female. They will borrow the clothes and shoes of their female partners.
  2. During the day there are funny events like heel running.
  3. On Ash Wednesday, the ‘burial of the sardine’ will take place. On the beach at the old harbor of Puerto de la Cruz is a big papier maché sardine. During the night, this will be burnt and the event ends with fireworks.
  4. The ‘gran cosa apoteosis’ (the Carnival closing parade) is very funny to attend. During the parade, huevos tacos (which are eggshell and cloth balls held together by paste) are thrown onto the passing parade from windows and balconies.

7. Visit the Botanical Gardens (Jardin Botanico)

Jardin Botanico (Botanical Gardens) is located in Puerto de La Cruz. It is a very big garden with unique plants and trees from all around the world. Almost every plant and tree is labeled with the name of the plant or tree in different languages. Moreover, there is a lovely and peaceful pond at the back of the gardens. This garden is a good place to relax and spend one or two hours of the day. There is no restaurant in the garden, so bring some water and food with you. Across the garden, are a couple of restaurants where you can have a delicious lunch or dinner.

Facts about the Botanical Gardens
  • The entrance fee is around €3 for adults.
  • The Botanical Garden is open from 9AM to 6PM from Monday to Sunday.

Or you may take an excursion “Los Guanches Coast”. There will be 2 stops: Botanical Gardens (Admission included) and Playa El Bollullo.

8. Playa de Martianez

This beach is between the Martiánez cliffs and the Costa Martiánez complex. Part of this small, black-sand beach is open to the sea, with excellent conditions for surfing and body surfing. Usually there is a red flag on this beach, and you are not allowed to swim. This is a pity because this is one of my preferred beaches.

Here are some activities nearby:

  • Whale and Dolphin Watching Luxury Catamaran, Free Meal & Transfers
  • Whale & Dolphin Watching Boat Tour from Los Cristianos
  • Kayaking with Dolphins and Snorkeling With Turtles in Tenerife

Playa de Martianez

9.

Visit the Old Castillo de San Felipe

Castillo de San Felipe is a very small old castle (remains of castle) located next to Playa de Jardin. You can have a look inside and read about the history of the castle. It is not very interesting to visit, but if you visit Playa de Jardin, it is worth to have quick look inside this castle. You will cross it anyway.

10. Visit the Old Harbor

If you have done the nine things above and you still have energy left to explore the city, you could also visit the old harbor of Puerto de la Cruz. It is located next to the ‘Plaze del Charco’. The harbor is very small and is nowadays used to swim and fish.

Puerto de la Cruz is a very nice city to visit during your stay on Tenerife. There are plenty of things to do and the weather is always very nice. If you like to party and would like to visit an awesome night club I recommend Limbo to you. This place is fantastic. Secondly, Blanco is also a good bar to have some drinks.

We also recommend hiring a car and exploring the roads in Tenerife.

2004 1st. place Competition for the redaction of the Special Distribution Plan of el Puerto de la Cruz

2007 1st place Competition for the Urbanization Project of el Puerto de la Cruz

Main project idea: The city of Puerto de la Cruz, located on the northern part of the island of Tenerife with approximately 40,000 inhabitants, is one the first tourist cities in the 1960′ Canary Islands. It has always been an example in the history of tourism in the Canary Islands as a pioneer of tourism development; however, nowadays it is much more of a senior-oriented destination, suffering the consequences of time and in the need of a renewal to get back on track. Menis Arquitectos won the public call for tenders announced with this purpose in 2004 and has been working on developing the Waterfront project since then – still under discussion – which is partly based on a renovation and partly on a completely new establishment.

This project has generated great expectations among the citizens of the island, as well an intense and long social debate that has prompted many questions in the architect: how is it possible to combine the different interests that coexist in the place? How do we enhance the existing open commercial areas in Puerto de la Cruz at the same time as the development of new commercial zones? How do we respect the historic city and still leave a mark of the XXIst century?

Menis designs a new meeting point between the city and the sea, restoring the historical trace of the maritime edge of the city, returning the sea to its former coast line, rebuilding the vernacular landscape. The project takes the continuous and gradual growth of the historic structure of the city into account, bringing citizens to the sea in an organic and flexible way, incorporating the qualities of the place and including the recovery of a landscape consistent with the vernacular tradition of moulding the coast naturally for its use by man and the conviction of the importance of the public spaces quality.

The project responds to the character of the island of Tenerife and its northern landscapes, with rocky and volcanic maritime shores, small lagoons and black sand beaches, thus creating something new that enriches what already exists and brings the appropriate quality and modernization for a European tourism destination. It does not only maintain the original location of the coastline that favoured the close historical relationship between the sea and the city, but it also strengthens it by pacifying the sea – often rough in the north of the island – without having to create a dead lagoon and mastering therefore the natural Stream of the Atlantic Ocean, building a layer of water with a width that varies between 25 and 40m and creating two new coastlines in the city: one towards the Stream (overlooking the Teide) and another towards Puerto de la Cruz.

That double coastline is also of great economic value. The program is managed through landscape layers that are created, optimizing public spaces and giving them high values of urban quality, while reducing, in each gesture, the impact that all this could have on the fragile historic layout of the city. These spaces link the historical values and the current needs of Puerto de la Cruz with a smooth rotundity, eliminating all the unnecessary or aggressive elements of the urban landscape that currently exist in that place, from advertising billboards to redundant furniture, limiting the presence of cars and softening the mistakes of the past through vegetation. It is architecture of the essential that values the physical and historical continuity of the city in its encounter with the sea.

Taking advantage of the future building of a nearby port, the complete regeneration of the entire coastline in the surroundings of the historical complex is proposed, which, together with a new multifunctional space parallel to that coastline, will achieve a large-scale urban regeneration. This gives continuity to the most important streets of this area of the city, as Mequinez Street, which will once again reach the edge of the water. The biological and scientific explanation of how the Stream works will also be an added attraction that could be of interest to tourists.

Behind this layer of water and parallel to it, multipurpose buildings have been designed to transform Puerto de La Cruz into a whole new public area to offer leisure and economic activities. The program of this ensemble is more than a simple mix of functions: the main aim is to achieve a real organic connection between the old city network and the harbour. The ensemble will include: squares, public walks, a shopping centre, a sailing and nautical sports school, a beach-club, gardens, a parking lot, a 360º viewpoint, restaurants, an open-air auditorium and gastronomic markets.

Menis’s design includes a new beach as an extension of the Playa Jardín designed by César Manrique in 1992. With a series of design features that differentiates it from any other existing beaches on the island: it is a privileged natural viewpoint over the spectacular volcano Teide. Furthermore, since it is oriented towards the south, its users will be protected from the cold Trade Winds and the big waves. Swimming will be possible and easy throughout the whole year. The new harbour dam will act as a “support” to the beach, making it a sustainable and low cost construction, keeping the local black sand in place in a quite natural way. There will also be a layer of vegetation that integrates trees and solar energy lampposts between the beach and the city.

The apartments are excellent, neatly renovated, everything was clean. Fully match the description. There was everything for a comfortable stay: small household appliances, clean towels, all the necessary utensils for those who like to cook on their own, a terrace with an excellent view of the upper city and mountains, a beach umbrella. Always lived accompanied by the beautiful singing of birds! The location of the complex itself is excellent, but of course you need to climb a little uphill, as well as on the whole island, if you do not live on the first line from the ocean. It takes 20-30 minutes to walk to the beach, but with such beauty around it is only a joy. The hostess recommended us a very large list of places to visit, many good cafes and restaurants, some of which eat mostly only locals.

When booking an apartment in Puerto de la Cruz, we had absolutely no idea what the weather was like there, how to have fun, etc. We just wanted to go to a new place for a long time. It all happened as if by chance – we quickly bought air tickets at a low price, and only then did we begin to learn about the place where we would go. There is a lot of conflicting information on the Internet about the north of Tenerife, they also write that Russians rest mainly in the south. There are many Germans here, although the British originally opened the city as a resort. The weather site showed only +20 every day, although in fact the whole holiday was much warmer (+26 + 28), sunny (only a couple of cloudy days), and everything around was pleasing – an abundance of fruits, greenery, a historic city, daily city celebrations , nearby attractions and, most importantly, the gentle waves of the Atlantic.

We settled in the Tenerife Ving hotel – good apartments at a low price, 2 full stars, 10 minutes walk to the beach, and a beautiful view of the Teide volcano. The room consisted of a large room, which was divided into two parts by a half-wall – a living room and a bedroom, from a separate kitchenette with dishes, an electric stove and a refrigerator, and a large shower room. The room was cleaned daily, except Sunday, while changing all the towels and my floor, the bed was changed after 10 days. The room also had a small TV, a balcony with a dryer and a table with chairs. There were also disadvantages: wifi is paid and available only at the reception – so we bought mobile internet for a laptop. And in the evenings, cigarette smoke rose from the balconies of the lower floors. But at the bottom of the hotel there was a small grocery store, a few minutes walk – a large supermarket (where they even sold Russian kefir), and a little further away the market (twice a week), where we thoroughly bought vegetables and fruits. There was also a bus station nearby, from where buses departed to different parts of the island.

Puerto de la Cruz is a city with its own character, traditions and soul, whose history dates back to the first half of the 16th century.
A city where tourists are not the masters of life, but guests who briefly dived into the unhurried life of thirty-two thousand of its benevolent inhabitants.

Once Puerto de la Cruz was the main resort of Tenerife. But then Las Americas was built in the south, and a significant part of the tourists began to go where there is more sun and you can comfortably swim in the ocean. Nevertheless, Puerto still confidently holds the position of the island’s second most visited resort. For many, the atmosphere of a real Canarian city is more attractive than the charms of a traditional beach holiday.

A 10-minute walk from the hotel was the spacious beach, designed by architect3 Playa Jardin9 artist Cesar Manrique. It took 230,000 cubic meters to equip it. m of volcanic sand raised from the seabed, as well as four thousand concrete blocks (each weighing 20 tons), from which the breakwater was built. The beach cost the island 2 billion pesetas. There is a rental of sunbeds and umbrellas, showers, changing rooms, restaurants, medical care, parking.

But we preferred to swim in the Lago Martianez outdoor pool complex. It was built as a place where citizens and guests of the resort can safely swim in the sea water.

When visiting the complex, it is more profitable to buy a subscription for many visits. There are also a couple of inconveniences: the subscription price does not include a sun umbrella (2.50 Euro per umbrella for the day), and even after dinner it is very difficult to find a free place, and you need to drag a sunbed, as well as a heavy stone fixing the umbrella to the found patch. But all this was covered by a huge pool of sea water and artificial islands and a fountain – it was very pleasant to swim in it.

in Puerto de la Cruz is a small botanical garden, which is simply great visit in the afternoon heat, when sunbathing is harmful, and almost all shops are closed for a 2-3 hour siesta (an inviolable principle of the Spaniards), and hide in the shade of tropical vegetation.

This wonderful city has another attraction – the most famous zoo in the Canary Islands “Loro Parque”. It is better to go there in the morning, because the day in this most interesting place flies by unnoticed. We recommend buying tickets in advance, on the site http://www.loroparque.com, or from distributors, the prices are the same. This will save you from standing in a long line at the checkout. The zoo has only one drawback – smoking is allowed on the territory, which is unacceptable for me and families with children.

The yellow toy train will take you from the center of Puerto de la Cruz to Loro Parque and back in 20 minutes, free of charge. The architect of the park built the “Thai Village” as a central entrance – a picturesque complex of a number of small wooden buildings with roofs decorated with real gold. It is the largest Thai-style building outside of Thailand itself.

Loro Parque is especially interesting for four types of performances that take place every day in different parts of it. Each – several times. Places are best taken 15-20 minutes before the start. The show itself lasts about half an hour.

We first attended a fur seal performance.

          ***

Then we went to penguinarium – the best in Europe and one of the largest in the world. I saw penguins live for the first time and was amazed. The room is saturated with the smell of fish, and it recreates the natural living conditions for penguins. During our visit there was a polar night – so there was twilight on a large area behind the glass. Every day, a snow cannon “shoots” more than 10 tons of snow for the penguins.

          ***

Most of all we remember the show with killer whales. They moved to permanent residence in Loro Parque from the USA relatively recently – in 2006. A special huge pool was built for them, 120 meters in diameter, with 22.5 million liters of sea water. We sat down in the “splash zone”, not really believing that we would be wet. Before the start of the show, a video was shown on the big screen, in which killer whales, swimming in the pool, douse the audience, hitting the water with their tails. And in the same place it is recommended to buy a raincoat for 3 euros. We did not succumb, deciding that this was just advertising. But after a few photos, I still put the camera in a bag behind my back. And in a few moments we were doused with a big wave from the pool – but it was fun! 🙂

          ***

And the dolphin performance was cute and funny, especially for the kids 🙂 . Initially, it was dedicated only to parrots (“loro” – a parrot. Now in the park, including birds in the “repositories”, there are 4 thousand copies (350 different species and subspecies). About 700 of them are shown to tourists.

Unfortunately, not all parrots fly freely, most are kept in cages like this, but there are also pavilions where you can even feed them, as well as watch a circus show with their participation, which we really enjoyed.0006

There is an aquarium near the exit. In it, in addition to many sea and river inhabitants, you will be pleased with an eighteen-meter glass tunnel with sharks swimming right above your head.
