    Destination Guide – Tenerife

The below information is correct, to the best of our knowledge, when compiling in 2017. Please use for guidance only.

A holiday to Tenerife is a winning recipe for many holidaymakers.  The island combines familiarity, with year-round sunshine, dramatic landscapes and  interesting days out to appeal to a variety of age groups.

Tenerife is the most populous island of the Canary Islands, and is Spanish.  It is home to one of the world’s largest carnivals and the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is attempting to become a world heritage site.  The dominant natural feature is the mountainous El Teide, which is the third largest volcano in the world.

    Health
Many Canarians are very health conscious and some visitors travel to the islands for the therapeutic benefits, those who suffer from arthritis, rheumatism and asthma may benefit from the warm and dry climate.  Local hospitals are up-to-date and well quipped and there are many English speaking doctors and dentists.  It is recommended that you drink bottled water, as a visitor to the region.   Sun burn is the major health risk due to the high levels of sunshine, so take the necessary precautions, and also try to avoid dehydration.

    Cuisine
The food is an enticing mix of international dishes as well as typically Spanish food, there are also influences of Africa and Latin America. Fish lovers are well catered for as there is an abundance of seafood and fresh fish.  A local tipple to try is ron miel which is honey rum, this is sometimes served after a meal.  Bananas are grown in plantations based in the wetter north of the island, you can visit to sample banana-based delicacies and banana cocktails.

    Electricity
You will need to pack a 2-pin plug adaptor for your appliances from home.

    Currency  – the Euro

    Driving – on the right

Climate – Dubbed the “land of eternal spring” due to the warm year-round climate, the temperature typically ranges from 22 – 26 degrees in Winter and 26 to 28 degrees in Summer.   There is a high level of all-round sunshine but there tends to be more rain in the north of the island.

    Where to go?
For getting back to nature – Mount Teide is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site and is one of the most popular National Parks in the world.  You can touch the clouds from your car window, as the mountain can be accessed by road up until over 2, 000 metres.  You can then take a cable car nearly to the summit in 8 minutes.  Spectacular desert-like landscapes are countered by lush forests in Tenerife.

For kids and teens – Siam Park in Costa Adeje is a fantastic family waterpark. Combining thrill rides with relaxing Lazy River rides, it also boasts a wave pool where you can enjoy the world’s biggest artificial waves.  The biggest lazy river in the world includes highlights of waterfalls, ravishing gardens, exotic fish and culminates in a Jacuzzi – bliss!

Relaxation – Discover your very own Eden in Puerto de la Cruz’ botanical gardens.   You don’t have to be a gardener to wander the landscape and  appreciate the splendour of flame-like bird-of-paradise flowers, giant figs with strangler roots and spiky dragon trees.

Action – You can hike up Mount Teide, take a 4 x 4 jeep ride around the island’s more inaccessible spots or indulge in watersports including diving, big-game fishing and kayaking.

Nightlife – The undisputed place to be for a no-holds-barred night out is Playa de Las Americas, geared to 18-30 revellers.  Get your fill of foam parties, slam shots and karaoke bars in the party zones of Veronicas Strip, Starco and The Patch.
