The information on this site is provided as is, without any assurances as to its accuracy or suitability for any purpose. Weather data is prone to errors, outages, and other defects. We assume no responsibility for any decisions made on the basis of the content presented on this site.

We draw particular cautious attention to our reliance on the MERRA-2 model-based reconstructions for a number of important data series. While having the tremendous advantages of temporal and spatial completeness, these reconstructions: (1) are based on computer models that may have model-based errors, (2) are coarsely sampled on a 50 km grid and are therefore unable to reconstruct the local variations of many microclimates, and (3) have particular difficulty with the weather in some coastal areas, especially small islands.

We further caution that our travel scores are only as good as the data that underpin them, that weather conditions at any given location and time are unpredictable and variable, and that the definition of the scores reflects a particular set of preferences that may not agree with those of any particular reader.

METAR

Weather stations at airports around the world regularly publish METAR weather reports. These reports are used by pilots, air traffic controllers, meteorologists, climatologists and other researchers. They are published on radio and on the Internet. We have been collecting and archiving published METARs since 2011. We also found independent sources of archival reports for previous years.

ISD reports

The Integrated Surface Database (ISD), maintained and published by NOAA’s National Environmental Information Center, consists of hourly and synoptic weather reports from a variety of sources. We use ISD data to complete our METAR archive and fill in missing data.

Other data

The sources of the averages shown on the daily temperature chart are described in more detail in the Station Average Temperature Summary.

All data related to the position of the Sun (such as sunrise and sunset) are calculated using astronomical formulas from Jean Mius’ Astronomical Algorithms, 2nd Ed. .

The names, locations and time zones of places and some airports are from the GeoNames Geographical Database.

From Tenerife to Lesbos: this year’s fires could destroy record forest areas in Europe

A fire burns a wheat field in the province of Zamora. Spain, 18 July 2022. Photo: Isabel Infantes / Reuters / Forum

Record-breaking heat and drought in Europe have once again sparked massive wildfires. As in previous years, southern countries – Spain, France, Slovenia, Croatia, Greece – suffer the most from natural disasters. However, those who are located to the north also got it. Over the past week, British firefighters have had a lot of work, who are still continuing to eliminate the consequences of abnormally hot and dry weather for the country.

The fires are like bombings

Last week the UK was hit by a scorching heat wave like no other in recorded history. The worst fears of specialists were confirmed – a new temperature record was set in the country. In the village of Coningsby, located 210 kilometers north of London, the thermometer showed 40.3°C, which was immediately 1.6°C higher than the previous record value. In total, according to the UK Met Office, temperatures above 38.7°C were recorded in 34 locations across the country.

However, despite some cooling, next month a heatwave, albeit not catastrophic, could return to the United Kingdom. According to meteorologist James Madden , “some signs indicate that hot weather will return next month.”

Fires are constant companions of hot and dry weather. At the end of last week, London firefighters had as much work as, according to them, had not been since the Second World War. Residents of the village of Wennington in east London, which burned down 19houses, compared the consequences of the fire element with a raid by German bombers.

A few days earlier, on Tuesday, according to the mayor of the British capital, Sadiq Khan, London firefighters received 2,600 calls, with an average daily number of 350. Numerous fires were recorded in other regions of the country.

Despite the fact that temperatures have dropped significantly after recent peaks, the threat of fires in the UK remains. In this regard, people are urged to give up barbecue for a while and remove fire-hazardous rubbish from the street. At the beginning of the week, several fires were recorded around London at once, which the authorities attribute to abnormally hot weather.

Spain and France count damages

While emergency services managed to keep the situation under control in the UK, wildfires have become catastrophic in several countries in southern Europe, where extreme weather conditions last longer.

According to the satellite emergency management system Copernicus EMS, there is currently an extremely high risk of forest fires in much of Spain. Nevertheless, while the rescue services manage to control what is happening.

The situation is much more complicated in the Canary Islands, in particular on the largest island of the Tenerife archipelago. In recent days, authorities have evacuated 585 people from the municipality of La Guancha in the north of the island. About 150 fire brigades are fighting the fire there. Reason for optimism is given by a slight drop in temperature and rising humidity, but so far the situation is far from being resolved successfully. In total, since the beginning of 2022, the fire has affected 2 thousand square kilometers of Spanish territory.

In France, firefighters managed to localize the largest fire this year in the country in the Gironde department, which has already destroyed about 2 thousand square kilometers of forest and led to the evacuation of 36 thousand local residents and tourists. And the fire has not been completely extinguished yet. This hit the tourism industry hard: thousands of tourists refused to visit Europe’s largest sand dune in Pyla due to forest fires.

As in previous years, part of the fires were caused by deliberate arson. At least two fires in Brittany in northwestern France were man-made.

Fire on the front line

A fire of historic proportions is raging in Slovenia on the Karst plateau near the border with Italy. To date, more than 35 square kilometers of forest have burned out here. High temperatures and strong winds that continue in the coming days could lead to further spread of the flames.

Thousands of firefighters, supported by aviation, are fighting the elements around the clock to prevent it from spreading to numerous settlements in the region. The detonation of the shells remaining in the ground since the First World War significantly hinders the extinguishing of the fire – the front line passed through the Karst plateau.

The situation in Greece is heating up. Earlier in the week, firefighters battled four major wildfires that forced hundreds of people to flee their homes. The period of abnormal heat, exceeding 42°C, began in the country only last Saturday and, according to weather forecasts, will last 10 days. The most difficult now is in the west of the Peloponnese, in the northeastern nome of Evros, where the Dadia National Park is on fire, as well as on the island of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea.

More than 300 firefighters are fighting the fire in Dadia, supported by six aircraft. In Lesbos, the fires have not subsided for the fourth day, approaching close to the popular tourist settlements of Vatera and Vrys, which has already led to the evacuation of more than 450 people. Like last year, the flames are approaching ancient Olympia. The Greek authorities have already applied for international assistance and are expecting the arrival of 50 Finnish firefighters soon.

According to the European Forest Fire Information System, this year’s record-breaking forest area could be destroyed in Europe due to fires.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain – recreation, weather, tourist reviews, photos

In addition to the fact that the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has the status of one of the two capitals of the Canary Islands, it is the capital of the entire island of Tenerife and the Spanish province of the same name. In common parlance, the city is simply called Santa Cruz (Holy Cross) , and the prefix “de Tenerife” only distinguishes it from other cities with the same name, of which there are many in the world.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a very modern and lively city boasting many magnificent squares, cozy parks and beautiful houses. Everyone who comes to this sunny city is literally immediately imbued with a festive atmosphere. The streets of the city are filled with numerous bazaars, shops and hotels, and its inhabitants are smiling and hospitable. However, Santa Cruz really blossoms and comes to life in February, when the famous carnivals of Tenerife take place here, and the city itself is filled with flowers, light and music. In addition, the famous Playa de las Teresitas beach with white sands, which attracts tourists here. Surprisingly, but true: the sand was brought here directly from the Sahara!

Climate and weather

Since Tenerife island located on the same latitude as the Sahara Desert, the weather here is always warm and comfortable. In winter, the average air temperature is +19…+21 °C , and in summer – +25..+27 °C . Precipitation on the island is practically absent. The water temperature remains stable all year round and fluctuates around +21° C.

A trip to Santa Cruz de Tenerife can be planned literally for any month: the tourist and beach season here lasts throughout the year.

Nature

Santa Cruz de Tenerife lies on the northeast coast of the island of Tenerife , the largest island in the Canary archipelago. The city is located on the gentle slope of a small mountain, and is surrounded by steep cliffs of the Anaga mountain range.

In the immediate vicinity of Santa Cruz de Tenerife there are two beaches: Las Teresitas with light yellow sand and Taganana with black volcanic sand. From the city you can very quickly get to the famous Teide National Park , where an active volcano rises (the third largest in the world).

Attractions

Despite the venerable age of the city, it cannot be said that there are many buildings of historical interest. The main one is Fort Castillo Negro , which in the past played an important role in the defense of the city. Now, every year there is a costume performance in honor of the repulsed attack by Admiral Nelson. It is worth noting that the building of the old fort is literally lost against the background of the concert hall Auditorio de Tenerife , made in modern Spanish style. It was opened not so long ago (2003), but has already become a symbol of the city.

Of particular interest is the magnificent Plaza de España , which is the heart of the capital. In the very center of the square is the Monument to the Fallen in the Spanish Civil War. In addition, the building of the Government Tenerife , Museum of Archeology and Anthropology 9 are located here0019 and Palace Map (XVII century). Two baroque temples deserve special mention – Church of St. Francis and Church of Iglesia La Concepción , within the walls of which Holy Cross of the conquistadors, which gave the city its name, is stored.

If Plaza de España i is considered the heart of the city, then Park Garcia Sanabria can safely be called its lungs. First of all, it is notable for being the largest city park in the Canary Islands.

There are a lot of museums in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the most famous of them is the Museum of Nature and man a, where you can see the mummies of the Guanches. Also worth noting are Art Gallery , Museum of Natural History , Museum of Military History and Municipal Museum of Painting and Sculpture .

The surroundings of the city also deserve attention. Be sure to visit the ancient capital of the island – the city of La Laguna . You can also go to the foothills Anaga or to Teide volcano , which is located in the park of the same name. In addition, not far from Santa Cruz de Tenerife are parrot park Lora Parque and botanical garden Garcia Sanabri a with an artificial iceberg, penguins and a huge dolphinarium.

Dining

Even the most demanding gourmets will like the city, as it simply abounds with all kinds of restaurants, cafes, snack bars and bars. Of course, most often there are establishments offering local national cuisine. One of her top “zest” is papas arrugadas – highland potatoes boiled in their skins. It is usually served as a side dish for meat and fish, or as an independent dish with red or green mojo sauce , which is prepared on the basis of olive oil.

A variety of seafood dishes (fish, squid, crabs, lobsters, shrimp, etc.) are also very popular here. Moreover, in some establishments in the aquarium, you can personally choose your future dinner and watch it being prepared. Meat treats are also common on the islands, for example, puchero canario (beef stew) or ropa vieja (chicken, beef, potatoes and peas). Also worth trying are favados (pork with beans) and rabbit stew conejo al salmorejo . As in Spain, paella with seafood, chicken or meat is popular here. Also light tapas snacks came here from the continent : cheese, jamon, ham, olives, etc.

The choice of desserts in the local cuisine is simply huge. Most common flan (pudding), fried bananas with rum and caramel and bienmesable (grated almonds and honey sweet). Well, they wash down all these dishes with great coffee in various variations.

Strong wine “Malvasia” and local beer, as well as white and dark rum deserve special attention.

Accommodation

Most hotels in Santa Cruz de Tenerife meet all European standards and are close to popular restaurants, bars and shops. Most of the hotels belong to the 4 * category and boast a high level of comfort, for example, Hotel Escuela Santa Cruz (from $ 100). However, the city also has many 3 * and 5 * establishments, as well as apartments.

For budget travelers, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is ready to offer budget accommodation options: Hotel Plaza (from $46), Hotel Pelinor (from $43), Hotel Horizonte (from $39), etc. There are also establishments that operate on the principle of “all inclusive”.

Entertainment and recreation

First of all, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the famous February carnival , which attracts a huge number of tourists. Moreover, this bright and colorful action is recognized as the second most popular carnival in the world (after the Brazilian one). In addition to the carnival, Santa Cruz de Tenerife hosts a huge number of other interesting holidays and festivals, for example, Baile de magos (Dance of the Magi) , Holy Week and Easter, Feast of Our Lady of Candelar and many others.

It is worth saying that Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one of the largest and most popular cities in the Canary archipelago, so there is no shortage of entertainment here. Night clubs, bars, casinos and all kinds of entertainment venues are open here for fans of noisy rest. Vacationers with the whole family can visit city parks, cinemas and playgrounds. As for sports, horseback riding, tennis, cycling and hiking along tourist routes are available to all tourists. The location of Santa Cruz makes it easy and quick to get to the main natural attractions of the island (Teide volcano, Anaga mountains, etc.).

However, one of the most popular holiday destinations are the beaches of Taganana and Las Teresitas, which are located near the city. Tourists tend to go there to sunbathe, ride a yacht or water ski, play beach volleyball, surf and other water sports. Not far from the city there are several diving centers that will be appreciated by both beginners and experienced divers.

Shopping

The Canary Islands are considered one of the best places for shopping, but Santa Cruz de Tenerife has firmly established the status of a shopping paradise. This is explained by the fact that the Canaries are duty-free zone , where the cost of all goods is an order of magnitude lower than in the EU countries.

The main shopping areas of the city are Plaza La Candelaria and the pedestrian street Calle de Castillo . It is there that there are many different shops, fashion boutiques and small shops where you can profitably buy perfumes, cosmetics, clothes, shoes, jewelry and souvenirs. Also worth a look are the Pargue Bulevar shopping center and Calle de Pilar, which offer luxury items from the most famous designers. In addition, in the suburbs of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, there are two huge shopping centers that boast many stores of famous world and European brands (H&M, Mango, Zara, C&A and others).

A more colorful and interesting place is the indoor market Mercado de Nuestra Senora de Africa , which looks like a huge courtyard with many shopping arcades. Mostly vegetables, fruits, flowers and spices are sold there, but their choice and variety are truly colossal.

Souvenir shops can be found on almost every street and offer both ordinary souvenirs (magnets, toys, postcards) and original products: knives with carved bone handles, embroidery roseta, ceramics, fine wood carvings and jewelery made from semi-precious stones. In addition, since Tenerife is an island of volcanic origin, goods made from pieces of solidified lava are highly valued here – bracelets, rings, decorative dishes, caskets, etc. It is also worth paying attention to local wine and palm honey, which, however, is not cheap.

Transport

On the island where Santa Cruz de Tenerife is located, there are two major international airports – Los Rodeos (North Tenerife) and Reina Sofia (South Tenerife). Each of them is connected to the city by bus service. The island can be reached from many European ports, for example, from Cadiz (Spain). Also, the main highways pass through Santa Cruz de Tenerife, so from here you can easily get to any settlement on the island.

The public transport of the city is represented by bus routes and a tram line to La Laguna. The cost of a ticket for one trip is about $1.5, and for a round trip – $2.75. Tickets can be bought from vending machines at bus stops and from drivers.

Taxis are an alternative to buses (white, with a blue stripe on the front door). They work only on meters: from $ 2.5 per landing and about $ 0.65 per 1 km.

If you have an international driver’s license, you can travel around the city and around the island in a rented car. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, there are a large number of car rental companies that use the Rent a Car sign as their identification. The rental conditions are standard: you will need a passport, an international driver’s license, and in some cases a deposit.

Communication

There are no problems with communication in the city: international calls can be made from payphones that run on small euro coins, from bars and travel agencies. In addition, you can always call from a hotel room, but in this case you will have to overpay a lot.

Mobile communication in the city has a uniform coverage and good quality. Roaming is available to all tourists who have activated this service in advance.

Internet access is available in most hotels and numerous Internet cafes. Many public places have free Wi-Fi hotspots.

Security

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a calm and prosperous city with a fairly high standard of living. There is practically no crime here, and the locals are law-abiding and friendly. Moreover, there are no specific places in the city that tourists should not visit. However, despite this, in public places one should not neglect elementary measures for the safety of property.

Separately, it is worth mentioning people who offer lottery tickets or excursions to “cheap shopping places” . It is recommended to simply ignore them.

Business climate

The city’s economy is based on the service sector, trade, tourism, imports and exports. Industry is rather poorly developed, with the exception of the chemical industry (oil refinery).

Due to the presence of the seaport and the presence of the main administrative and financial institutions, the business life of the city is very busy. The most promising sectors for business here are construction, trade and catering.

Property

Of course, the recent crisis has affected property values in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, but much less than in mainland Spain. At the same time, prices for all objects here remain lower than on the continent. So, at the moment, the average cost of housing in the capital fluctuates around $ 2,300 per 1 m 2 . Moreover, all residential real estate can be rented all year round. The most popular here are small studios and apartments in residential complexes.

Commercial real estate in the capital is also a profitable and reasonable investment. Catering establishments are especially popular here. For example, a small restaurant can be purchased for $200,000. The cost of hotels starts from $ 1.3 million, but they are sold extremely rarely.

Travel Tips

Near many hotels and other places in the city, you can see shops with consumer electronics at very attractive prices, which are most often sold by Indians. However, do not immediately make a “profitable” purchase.
