Description
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is one of the must-visit destinations if you come to the Canary Islands. Enjoy the pleasant weather and get ready to explore the city. Hop on the red City Sightseeing bus and visit the most important monuments. The route has stops at the main sights, so you can hop on and off as many times as you like.
From Santa Catalina Park the route starts in our open-topped buses. One of the first stops you should take into account is the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium. It’s already one of the most emblematic buildings of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, as well as being the most important cultural space.
But there is much more to discover in this city. It’s time to hop off at Vegueta, the historic centre of the city. Here you can also join a walking tour to learn more about the history of this place and visit its most famous spots. One of them is the Cathedral of Santa Ana. Don’t forget to go up to the Cathedral Tower. From here you’ll enjoy unique views of the whole city.
Very close to the Cathedral you’ll find the Casas Consistoriales, one of the most emblematic buildings in the city and where the Town Hall of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is located. Learn about the history of the building and its beautiful interior with a guided tour, which is included in your Las Palmas Experience ticket.
With the City Sightseeing bus you will also reach other important monuments of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, such as Casa Museo Pérez Galdós, which you can visit for free showing your City Sightseeing ticket. Nearby you can stop by Gabinete Literario, another of the city’s most iconic cultural venues.
You can’t leave the city without visiting Playa de Las Canteras. Whether for a stroll, a swim or a few photographs, this place is one of the symbols of the city that you must visit.
Enjoy Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on board City Sightseeing!

Beaches
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has one of the most beautiful beaches in Gran Canaria. Playa Las Canteras is a fantastic beach that you don’t expect in such a big city. When I first left the city and found this beach, I was amazed. One nice thing is, even though Las Palmas is quite big and busy being the capital, there is no traffic near the beach. There are other beaches in Las Palmas, such as Playa de Las Alcaravaneras, but it is much less popular, mainly because it is located next to such a busy road.
Hotels
When visiting Las Palmas, you need to be a little careful with hotels. Some look like they are close to the beach on the map. But due to the layout of the road and the large hill in the center of the city, it may take much longer than you expect. In addition, many hotels are located right next to the highway in Las Palmas or close to the industrial harbor, so be careful.
The hotels I can recommend are the following:
- Bull Reina Isabel for a beach holiday right next to the beach.
- Bed&Chic Las Palmas is a small and compact boutique hotel with a very personalized service, located in the best part of the city, but close to the beach.
Nightlife
When it comes to nightlife in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, you’ll find quite a lot to choose from since it’s the capital. You will find most of it near the port area of Las Canteras beach and not far from the city center. Mostly it is a rather relaxed and calm environment, but there are also clubs.
If you’re not sure if Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the right place for your vacation, check out my guide to Gran Canaria where to stay.
Restaurants and Bars
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has plenty of places to eat, and many of them are much cheaper than the more popular resorts of Gran Canaria. Especially near the beach you will find many restaurants, but they are also scattered throughout the city. The ones near the beach are a little more expensive, but the difference is not that big. I appreciated that there are no “pr-people” or salespeople who constantly pester you with requests to go to their restaurants. Just look for places where you see a lot of locals eating and you’ll get great prices and great food.
There are many large shopping centers in Las Palmas. El Muelle, near which cruise ships arrive, and Las Arenas shopping center on the other side of the city are the largest. Here you will find everything much cheaper than in other, more touristy areas of Gran Canaria.
The Mercado Central De Las Palmas (Central Market of Las Palmas) is worth a visit. This one is open almost every day except Sunday and has a lot of fresh produce and many typical local products from Gran Canaria.
How to get to Las Palmas
From Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) to Las Palmas about 25 km and 20 minutes drive.
- Public transport: €2.95 and 30 minutes, you may need to transfer to another bus in Palma depending on where you need to get to.
- Shuttle bus: Only available to select hotels, drops off at your hotel, 15 euros per person.
- Taxi: 25 euros during the day or 34 euros at weekends and nights.
You can find the companies I have booked with and would recommend, as well as more information about taxis, shuttles and buses here.
What to do near Las Palmas
Las Palmas is located far from other holiday destinations in Gran Canaria, in fact, completely on the other side of the island. And while there is plenty to do in Las Palmas, I would still definitely advise you to rent a car. The Canary Islands is one of the cheapest places in Spain to rent a car.
If you don’t rent a car, you have plenty of markets, a fantastic beach, and great shopping malls and streets to explore in the town and old town of Vegeta. If you want to see more of the city, the City Sightseeing bus tour is the best way to get your bearings. The new Poema de Mar Aquarium is also worth a visit near the port area of Las Palmas.
Here you will find a complete list of what I would advise you to do in Gran Canaria.
