Tenerife, Spain (Canary Islands)

By Lara from The Best Travel Gifts

One of the best places to visit in January in Europe if you are looking for a sunny days is Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands. With pleasant temperatures, Tenerife is one of the warmest places in Europe during the winter months.

Besides discovering Tenerife’s beaches and enjoying the sun, there are plenty of incredible things to do on this island. The easiest way to explore is to rent a car, but you can also book tours to some of the most popular attractions, such as National Parque El Teide.

The National Park includes Volcano El Teide, the highest point in Tenerife, and the whole of Spain (12,188 ft). There is a cable car to take you to the top from which you will have a stunning view over the island. If you are lucky, you can even see the other Canary islands as well, such as Gran Canaria. Make sure you also take some time to hike and explore other areas of the Park. The volcanic landscape is simply fascinating.

Another beautiful national park for hiking is Parque Rural de Anaga in the north. You do need a car to get there, but it’s well worth the drive.

Two other towns worth exploring are Garachico and the Unesco World Heritage listed town of San Cristobal de La Laguna. San Cristobal offers colonial architecture and its’ linear layout of its streets – created in the 15th Century without protective outer walls – combine to give a remarkable feel to this ancient university city.

Weather And Directions

You can expect pleasant average temperatures between 65 – 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The best place to stay is the south of the island because it has the most sun hours and the least amount of rainfall.

It’s only a fifteen-minute drive from Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur (TFS) to Costa Adeje, a popular town in the south.

Hotel Recommendation

Lara says, “Costa Adeje is a popular town in the south. During the summer, Tenerife and Costa Adeje can feel extremely touristy due to the large crowds, but in January it’s actually a pleasant place to stay. Especially if you skip the large hotels and stay at a cute boutique hotel, such as B&B Villa Boutique Tenerife.”

Lapland, Sweden (Photo courtesy of Pixaby)

Lapland, Sweden

By Ellie from El On The Move

What better place than to experience a true winter wonderland than in Lapland. Located in the Arctic Circle and part of Swedish Lapland, Kiruna is one of the best places to visit in January in Europe. It is the most northern town in Sweden, and it feels like it is in a world of its own. Kiruna developed because of a very large iron mine and apart from the mine and the town itself, there is nothing but snow, forest and wilderness.

The best activity is dog sledding in the Lapland countryside. Being pulled by a team of dogs in the snow with utter silence surrounding you allows you to be able to appreciate the stunning nature. You can choose to drive your own sled or be driven by a guide, relax and enjoy the views.

No trip up north would be the same without searching for the Northern Lights. The Northern Lights can be seen from Kiruna town but the lights are best when far away from any light source. For example, some of the best Northern Lights that you might see are when you are driving between towns as there is no light at all. Tour companies offer Northern Light tours, but any place with low light is an opportunity to see them.

January in Kiruna is a great time to visit as it is still during the polar night (at least the first week or so). The polar night means it is full day of sunset or sunrise colours across the whole sky. The colours are incredible and the short daylight hours means more darkness to see the Northern Lights.

Weather And Directions

January is one of the coldest months of the year. You can expect lots of snow and 10°F – 17°F (-30°C) is very normal. So make sure you pack extra warm clothes with high percentage wool base layers. High quality layers make such a difference.

Kiruna is accessible by flight from Stockholm. The flight is about 1.5 hours. They run multiple times a day in the winter season. There is also an overnight train from Stockholm that offers incredible scenery throughout Sweden.

Hotel Recommendation

Ellie says, “Kiruna is home to the world’s first Ice Hotel. The rooms are carved from Ice and kept at a balmy -5°C inside the rooms. When sleeping in an ice room you are provided with reindeer skins and a very warm sleeping bag. The rooms are changed each year and are created by ice artists from all over the world, so it is a very special experience. They also have warm rooms if the thought of sleeping in -5°C is not for you. The hotel is based overlooking the Tourne River which is completely frozen so has some lovely views.

Catania, Italy (Sicily)

By Ingrid from Ingrid Zen Moments

Sicily is Italy’s largest island, with a vast history, strong local culture, and incredible food scene, there is no wonder thousands of tourists flock here every year. If you love old towns packed with history, but also beautiful nature, Sicily should be on your Italian bucket list.

Visiting Sicily during the winter months is a great time to enjoy your trip without the torrid temperatures you get during summer, but also without the crowds and for the cheap.

Catania is the main city to visit on Sicily’s eastern coast, set at the foot of Mount Etna. The city was founded by Greeks almost 2800 years ago and today is an open-air museum, where one can still see the remnants of Greek culture on a stroll around town.

Castello Ursino dates from the 13th century and is one of the main tourist attractions in town. Today, it hosts a museum with artifacts from Catania and its region. The Greek/Roman Theater of Catania is another important sight you shouldn’t miss during your visit.

From Catania, you cannot skip a climb on Mount Etna or a day trip to the picturesque and bohemian city of Taormina. Once the favorite destination for poets and writers from all over the world, Taormina will charm you with its beautiful narrow streets and impressive architecture.

Weather And Directions

The average temperature in Catania in January ranges from 50°F – 59°F.

Reaching Catania is easy both from inside of Italy, but also from other European capitals. Catania–Fontanarossa Airport is less than 5 kilometers away from the main city center and can be easily reached by car or by public transportation.

Hotel Recommendation

Ingrid says, “While choosing an area to stay in Catania could prove to be challenging, you could never go wrong with a hotel or apartment in the old city center, along the seafront, or anywhere close to Corso Italia. They all come with advantages and disadvantages, but from there you will not only be close to most of the tourist attractions but will also be in a great area.”

Istanbul, Turkey

By Sasha from Mog And Dog Travels

Spanning the continents of Europe and Asia, the historic city of Istanbul is one of the best European cities to visit all year round. However, travellers who decide to explore this incredible city in January will be rewarded with wonderful and unique experiences.

With the summer tourist crowds gone, January is a much more peaceful time to explore this mammoth city. You avoid the long queues that usually snake around the major tourist attractions in Galata and the historical area of Sultanahmet. Low season also makes Istanbul a much more budget-friendly destination, with reduced prices for hotels, flights and tours.

Make sure to visit the Hagia Sophia – a 1500-year-old UNESCO World Heritage site that was once at the centre of the Roman and Ottoman Empires. Take your time to marvel at the ornate and amazingly preserved mosaics on the upper floors and ceilings of the building. You can then cross Sultanahmet Square to the Blue Mosque. Another architectural wonder that was built in the 17th Century and decorated with over 20,000 handmade ceramic tiles.

Any winter trip to Istanbul should include a tour of the city’s amazing gastronomic scene. January is a great time to sample sahlep, a rich traditional Turkish drink only consumed in the winter months and made from orchid root, milk and cinnamon. Available in cafes and restaurants all over the city, it’s the perfect antidote to the chilly weather outside.

January is also the best time to visit Turkey’s largest ski resort at Mount Uludağ, just 2.5 hours outside of Istanbul. Offering a range of activities including downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and sledding. It also has the longest cable car ride in the world, the Bursa Teleferik, which offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

Weather And Directions

January is the coldest month in Istanbul, with daytime temperatures ranging from 39°F to 47°F. Whilst it does rain quite frequently, there will be many days when the weather is bright and sunny. The fact that many of Istanbul’s main attractions are covered also makes it a great place to visit in January even when the weather is rainy or unpredictable.

January is also when Istanbul is most likely to experience snowfall. While this is usually very light (only 2-4cm (1.5in) at most), the sight of the city’s mosques and churches covered in snow makes for stunning photographs.

Most visitors to Istanbul will fly into Istanbul Airport. This is normally a 45-60 minute drive from the city centre, though during rush hour this can take much longer.

Hotel Recommendation

Sasha says, “There are a number of popular areas to stay in Istanbul and accommodation ranges from cool apartments to luxury hotels and budget hostels. Louis Appartements in Galata, just a few minutes from the metro station and close to many cafes and restaurants, has comfortable, gorgeous suites and an amazing roof terrace with views of the Galata Tower.”

Crete, Greece (Photo courtesy of Pixaby)

Crete, Greece (Greek Islands)

By Angela from Fitting In Adventure

Walk the paths of many mythological stories on Crete, one of the best European destinations to visit in January. Surrounded by quaint shops and restaurants, this lesser known Greek Island is sure to leave your adventurous soul fulfilled whether you dive into its history and mythology, or the more current music culture.

History lovers will be in heaven since Crete’s history predates the ancient Minoan civilization by more than four millennia.

The island of Crete’s Palace of Knossos is where the legend of the Minotaur was born. Constructed by Daedalus, the labyrinths purpose was to house the minotaur. Legend has it that the Cretan King then demanded that Athens send seven young men and seven young women to be fed to the minotaur as a tax. This continued until Theseus killed the minotaur. While visiting the Palace of Knossos you will wonder the ruins and view the legendary throne room of King Minos.

Take a trip up Mount Ida. Mythology states this is where Zeus was raised. Also called Psilorertis, this is where Zeus’ mother Rhea hid him from his father Cronos. Cronos was known to eat his children to prevent them from overthrowing him in the future. Make sure to visit the cave of Dikteon Andron where Zeus was born.

Visiting in the off-season will help you avoid many of the crowds typically associated with summertime in the Greek islands.

Weather And Directions

With the average temperature in the high 50s, you will miss the muggy summer months making it the perfect time for wandering and hikes. You will want to return again and again to enjoy the clearest coastline in Europe.

Fly into Athens and grab a ferry or cruise to head over to the island of Crete.

Paris, France

By Kelly from Girl With A Passport

If you’re in search of one of the best places to visit in Europe in January, then look no further than Paris.
As the capital of France, the city of light is known for its incredible food, world-class museums, and refined culture.

If you plan your visit for January, you’ll love Paris even more since you’ll enjoy cheaper hotel prices, better deals on flights, and less crowded attractions. Accordingly, you can quickly and easily visit places like the Louvre without the hordes of tourists. Plus, staff at many of the city’s busy restaurants and hotels will be a lot less stressed – and infinitely more polite – since they don’t have to cater to as many people.

While you’re in the city and have the place all to yourself, be sure to visit amazing works of art at the Louvre. These include the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, the Seated Scribe, and Liberty Leading the People. If you can, try to time your visit for a Wednesday or Friday evening when the museum is open late.

Next, take in a vibrant cabaret show at places like the Moulin Rouge or the Crazy Horse before attending a classic opera performance at The Opéra-Comique.

Finally, ascend the Arc de Triomphe for unparalleled views of the city before retreating inside Laduree for some well-deserved macarons and afternoon tea in Paris.

Weather And Directions

Whatever you do though, be sure to dress warmly since average temperatures in January only reach a high of 46°F  and a low of 37° F. You’ll also want to bring a warm jacket, rain coat or umbrella since the city can receive an average of nine days of rain throughout the month.

Hotel Recommendation

Kelly says, “When you want to retreat into warmth, consider a suite inside the Exe Panorama hotel.
Rooms here are well-priced and sit inside a lovely, Haussmann-style building that is only a five-minute walk from the Cadet metro station.”

Hallstatt, Austria (Photo courtesy of Nadine from Le Long Weekend)

By Nadine from Le Long Weekend

The fairytale village of Hallstatt is a dream to visit in winter. Surrounded by snow-dusted mountains, on the edge of a beautiful lake, it lives up to its lofty reputation as one of the most beautiful villages in the world. It is certainly one of the best winter destinations to visit in Europe.

Although small, there are plenty of things to do in Hallstatt. Take a walk up to the Skywalk platform where you’ll be awarded with incredible views over the village, lake, and mountainous region beyond. Visit the Altaussee Salt Mine to learn about the history of the town and its industrial past. This is also a fun activity if visiting with kids, as there are rides and a light & sound show that will delight all ages. And discover the creepy Bone House at St Michael’s Church where you’ll see the collection of around 1200 human skulls – some of which are painted in symbolic patterns and arranged into family groups. Nearby, there are many places to enjoy winter sports too.

Visiting Hallstatt in January is ideal as you’ll still have the magical festive decorations to enjoy, but you’re more likely to see it under a blanket of snow. Bundle up and wander the bucolic streets, getting lost in the maze of alleyways and staircases. Pop into warm cafes for streaming mugs of punsch or hot chocolate when you get too chilly.

Weather And Directions

With daily highs only reaching 42F, January is the snowiest month, with snowflakes falling 19 days of the month.

The closest International airport is in Salzburg. You then drive just over an hour the rest of the way, or take the train & ferry.

Hotel Recommendation

Nadine says, “Stay at the lakeside Boutiquehotel Strand Hallstatt to wake up to magical scenes (complete with resident swans) each morning.”

Gozo, Malta (Photo courtesy of Rick Barton from Unsplash)

Gozo, Malta

By Suzanne from Meandering Wild

Gozo is a small island located off the north coast of Malta. Gozo, along with its larger neighbour Malta and the small island of Comino, form this small southern Mediterranean island state.  It is halfway between the south coast of Italy and the coast of Tunisia, in Africa. It is a beautiful spot and one of the best places to visit in January in Europe.

In the centre of Gozo are a number of historic sites. The main town on the island is Rabat and sitting over the town is the Cittadella. This is an ancient building with large walls surrounding the ruins of ancient buildings and the Old Courts of Law and the Old Governor’s Palace.

A short drive from Rabat is The Blessed Virgin of Ta’Pinu Basilica. This beautiful church can be seen from the surrounding landscape between the villages of Gharb and Ghammar.

Gozo has its own UNESCO World Heritage site which Is found at the the Ggantija Temple. It was built between 3600 and 3200BC and even today, the huge slabs of limestone that made up the temple can be seen.

January is the perfect time to visit Gozo as it is quiet and calm with very few tourists. After the festivities of Christmas, the islands relax and do not have any significant celebrations.

Weather And Directions

In January, Gozo’s temperature is between 48 and 59 degrees Fahrenheit, but only on average about 7 days of rain. An average 5 hours of sunshine is seen each day through January. The sea temperature is a cool 63 degrees but with a good wetsuit this means that it is not too cold for swimming, snorkelling or diving.

Gozo is reached initially by an international flight into the main Malta International Airport near Valetta.  An hour drive takes you to the ferry at Cirkewwa. This ferry runs almost continually and within 45 minutes, you will be on Gozo.

Hotel Recommendation

Suzanne says, “One of the nicest places to stay is the coastal village of Marsalforn and this is a short 20 minute drive from the ferry at Mgarr. In the village there are a number of hotels, with Hotel Calypso on the waterfront being the largest in the town.”

The whole Old Town and Lesser Town Quarters are simply too beautiful for words. For a fantastic three day Itinerary, including a beer spa, please click here.

Mallorca is one of the most popular summer destinations in Europe, with many people choosing it for the gorgeous beaches and the guaranteed warm weather. However, Mallorca is great place to visit in January as well, especially if you are looking for a quiet holiday destination, without the summer crowds.

Mallorca offers something for every type of traveller. While most of the touristy resorts close down for the winter, the cities and villages around the island continue with their daily lives. You can find very affordable accommodation in stunning hotels or traditional fincas if you travel to Mallorca in January.

One of the best things to do in Mallorca is to explore the beaches. In January, you won’t be able to sunbathe as the weather is too cold, but you will be able to explore all the beautiful beaches and coves without any other people around.

Places such as Cala Pi or Cala Mesquida, which are packed in the summer, are now empty. Walking in the Cala Mondrago National Park is a lovely experience in the winter months, as you will find free places to park, as well as no other people on the trails.

If you enjoy hiking, consider going to the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains. In summer, it is way too hot to attempt the long trails. In January, the temperature is just right.

Another great thing to do in Mallorca is to go shopping in the local markets. Each village and town has its own market day. Small local producers gather in the main square and sell their homegrown fruits and vegetables, as well as cheese, sobrasada, or sundried tomatoes.

Florence, Italy

By Jaclyn from Resting Beach Face

Florence, dubbed the birthplace of the Renaissance, is a place to immerse yourself in history, art architecture, delicious food and wine, all the while being surrounded by welcoming locals. While Florence may be a city, it has a small-town feel and much calmer than other equally tourist-centric locations.

When in Florence, you will notice that the city is filled by pedestrians who stroll the streets to window-shop, enjoy a fabulous meal, or spend the day in a piazza people watching.

Florence is the capital of Tuscany, which is famous for rolling hills and vineyards. It is a perfect home base for short day trips to the countryside where you can take a cooking class at a gorgeous village or even help harvest grapes or olives for the season. Florence has no shortage of culture, of all varieties, and is still a bit of a hidden gem.

Take a tour of the Palazzo Medici and learn how the Medici family boosted the Renaissance; how Michelangelo was discovered; or, why Hitler decided not to destroy the Ponte Vecchio. Next, visit the Basilica of Santa Croce. The exterior is exquisite and the interior is home to the tombs of some of the most influential Renaissance artists and scholars, including Galileo, Michelangelo and Machiavelli. Finally, find your way to Piazzale Michelangelo which offers one of the best views of Florence and of the Duomo.

January offers lots of events to enjoy. January 6th is a national holiday called The Epiphany. This is where the Befana brings small goodies to those who have behaved during the year and the Three Wise Men will parade the streets. In addition, the city is illuminated with colorful lights pointed at some of Florence’s best-loved monuments.

On alternate weekends between January 7-24, the famous Pitti Palace is the center of the fashion world. In addition, throughout January, you will also find farmers markets, Organic and Artisan Markets, and an Antiques Fair held on various weekends.

Weather And Directions

The average temperature in Florence in January is 52 F, however there is a possibility of sleet and snow. Keep that in mind and pack some layers. However, Italy in general is very fashionable so try to stay stylish while staying warm! Generally, you should carry a travel umbrella and a packable rain jacket with you as you never know when there will be a downpour or flurries.

You will fly into the Florence airport (FLO). There is a new tram line that can take you from the airport to the city center. This is the easiest and cheapest way to reach Florence.

Uber and Lyft do not operate in Florence.

A wonderful place to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and to simply sit back and relax can be found in the Eastern France Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, more specifically in the Jura and Doubs department. The region is synonymous for good wine, authentic little villages untouched by the spoils of over-tourism and Comté, the salty cheese that takes its name from the region.

Learn all about the history of the local salt production in the UNESCO classified sites of Saline Royale Arc-et-Senans and the Salins-les-Bains salt museum. Alternatively, head out to Arbois to have a delicious wine tasting in the Domaine de la Pinte vineyard. Try your hand at the famous Yellow Wines from the Jura, the MacVin digestif of a delicious dessert wine that goes by the name Vin de Paille.

Weather And Directions

January has an average temperature of 45°F. The upper Jura region is known to get a lot colder at times with an average snowfall of 62 centimeters. It is the quintessential getaway for lovers of outdoor winter activities including cross-country skiing, snowshoe hiking, snowboarding and even dog sledding.

With daily trains running between Besançon and Paris, getting to the Jura and Doubs department is an absolute breeze.

Hotel Recommendation

Caroline says, “Base yourself out of Hotel le Sauvage in Besançon to be close to both the slopes and the wonderous activities in the city itself has to offer.”

Santorini, Greece (Greek Islands)

By Mary from Be Right Back by Mary

When thinking about Santorini, you usually think about going to the beach, tanning, and watching incredible sunsets while sipping on a cocktail by the sea. But this Greek Island has lots to offer all year long.

January in Santorini offers some of the warmest temperatures in Europe. In addition, you are guaranteed peace and quiet as the island is deserted by the majority of tourists who prefer to visit during the hot summer months. The cost for a trip to Santorini is definitely a lot lower during the off season, so it is the perfect place if you are looking for a cheap and sunny escape.

One of the best things to do in Santorini in January includes staying at a luxurious hotel on the Caldera. A good number of the best hotels in Fira, including the famous cave hotels, have beautiful views of the Caldera and include a hot tub. However, these can be quite pricy during the summer. January is the best time to experience luxurious Santorini without having to break the bank. Hot tubs are also a great addition as the sea is too cold for a swim at that time of the year.

Another worthy visit is Pyrgos village which is built on a hill. You have to walk up a good number of stairs to reach Pyrgos castle. This activity can be painful in the summer but it is perfect for January’s temperatures. At the top, you’ll find one of the best 360° views of the island.

Finally, there is a nice walk which takes you from Fira to Imerovigli, a lovely town along the Caldera. The walk is easy and about 1.25 mile long. It takes about 30 minutes to complete. On your way, you can make a detour to go check out the Rock of Skaros.

Weather And Directions

January in Santorini offers warm temperatures with peaks at 15°C (59°F) and an average of only 11 days of rain.

There are international airports on Santorini and Mykonos. There are also ferries between the Greek Islands. The cheapest alternative is to fly into Athens and take the ferry from there.

Pecs, Hungary

By Richard from RJ On Tour

Pecs is a fascinating city with an interesting history in the south of Hungary near the Croatia border. The city of Pecs was founded by the Romans and also occupied by the Ottoman empire, thus it has some remarkable historical sights to visit. The area is famous for its wine and food and the restaurants serve some great options, including iconic Hungarian dishes like Goulash.

There are lots of things to see and do in Pecs, from visiting sites to enjoying a hike in the nearby hills. In January, Pecs is quiet, thus you can visit all the historic sites when they are empty. The most popular attraction is the Sopianae, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Basically, it is an early Christian burial site from the 4th century.

The Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kasim is currently a church, however it used to be an Ottoman Mosque during their occupation in the 16th century. Visiting Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kasim is interesting as you learn history and see the unique decor inside. This building is the finest example of Turkish and Ottoman architecture in Hungary.

Pécs Cathedral is also a fantastic place to visit. It is the most prominent building in the city and has four towers. You can visit the inside of the cathedral too, which is colourful with lots of decorative features. They display the history of the site very well throughout the building. You can also climb the cathedral’s tower which offers fantastic views across the city and nearby countryside.

Weather And Directions

The climate in January is cold and typically ranges from 24.8F to 34.9F. There is an average of 5 days of rain, so it is pretty dry compared to other European cities.

The nearest international airport to Pecs is Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. From there you can get a direct train into Pecs, which takes two and a half hours. Alternatively, you can drive which takes 2 hours 15 minutes.

Hotel Recommendation

Richard says, “There are many apartments and hotel options in Pecs, however Corso Hotel is a centrally located four-star hotel. It is known for its large and modern rooms and delicious food.

Gibraltar, United Kingdom

By Emma from Travel On A Time Budget

Gibraltar, the tiny British Overseas Territory that borders Spain on its southern shores, is one of the best places to visit in January in Europe. It might only be 2.6 square miles, but there’s plenty to do.

Most of the top things to do in Gibraltar centre around “The Rock”. This is hardly surprising since at almost 1,400 foot, it’s impossible to go anywhere without staring up and seeing it. A cable car goes to the top where you can snap incredible photos out across the sea. It’s then a short walk down to St. Michael’s cave, where there are massive stalagmites rising up from the floor and stalactites hanging down from the ceiling.

Part of the draw to the Rock is the chance to see Gibraltar’s famous monkeys. The barbary macaques can be seen along the pathways of the nature reserve or viewed at Apes’ Den.

For history lovers, there are places in the Rock to visit to learn about Gibraltar’s history. The 18th century Great Siege Tunnels formed part of the defence of Gibraltar from France and Spain during the Great Siege. There are also World War 2 tunnels where military equipment was stored and troops stayed for protection.

Gibraltar also has beaches where you can relax after your sightseeing. Camp Bay has a lido and areas where children can swim. Even in January, you can get warm weather.

Weather And Directions

Average Temperatures can reach 61 degrees Fahrenheit (16 degrees centigrade) although there may also be rainy days and chilly evenings.

It’s also a really easy place to reach as it has its own airport that is easily walkable from the centre.

Hotel Recommendation

Emma says, “There are a range of places to stay in Gibraltar. The Holiday Inn Express is a reasonably priced option about 15 minutes’ walk from the main town.  For those who want to stay somewhere a bit different, the Sunborn is a hotel on a yacht in the marina. There’s a swimming pool and fabulous views of the rock from the sundeck.”

Borovets, Bulgaria

By Abi from I’m Going On An Adventure

For many people, January is their least favourite time of year. The weather is at its’ worst and all the joy from Christmas is over. However, one of the best ways to lift those January blues is to visit Borovets in Bulgaria. It’s the cutest little ski resort with stunning views, great runs and a fantastic vibe.

The main reason to go is for the snow and to enjoy the snowy mountain ski runs. The town has some fun slopes with varying levels of difficulty and it’s really, really cheap in comparison to most other ski resorts in Europe. It is a fantastic place to start learning how to ski or snowboard.

Borovets has some other fun winter activities such as riding snowmobiles through the mountain forest and enjoying a relaxing spa day at the gorgeous Rila Hotel or Yastrebets Hotel. However, in winter most people visit for the skiing and it’s been built up around this.

It’s easy to rent the skiing and boarding equipment from the town, plus the ski passes are easy to find. There’s only one main gondola to take you up to the top and it’s there at the bottom where you can buy lift tickets. A day pass is around £30 and a week’s pass will be discounted.

It’s also a great location for families as there’s additional activities at the bottom of the slopes. It’s easy to grab a sled and toboggan down the smaller slopes, and there’s horseback riding too. In addition, there are a selection of shops to wander around and purchase some souvenirs.

There’s loads of traditional Bulgarian restaurants with open log fires serving delicious meals such as melted blue cheese and cauliflower roasted potatoes, cheese fondants, hearty soups and local red wine.

The nightlife is energetic with lots of small bars and karaoke to enjoy. There’s a few local games which are played at the pubs such as one where you need to try and bang a nail into a log – which is really quite funny. Most evenings, there’s some sort of event running, so it’s a great place for everyone!

Don’t forget to give night skiing a go too. The slopes light up and the main run is open. It’s even better when it starts snowing!

Weather And Directions

It’s best to go towards the end of January to allow for as much snow as possible. The temperature drops to 2/-4 degrees (35 / 19 Fahrenheit) in January so it’s so important that you arrive prepared – warm clothes and thick socks.

Borovets is easy to reach but it does require a taxi or shuttle to take you from the airport to the town. You can book these at the airport but it’s easier to arrange beforehand. The closest airport is Sofia international which has regular flights all year round. The transport takes around 1 hour 15 minutes and is a beautiful drive through the mountain roads (once you pass the city).

Hotel Recommendation

Abi says, “There are some fantastic hotels in Borovets, depending on budget you can stay in the luxury Rila Hotel right in front of the slopes or a more budget friendly accommodation further down the hill such as Villa Park Guesthouse. Just be wary the further down you are, the harder the hike to reach the slopes.”

Ayia Napa, Cyprus

By Lina from World of Lina

Another one of the best places to visit in Europe in January is the lovely town of Ayia Napa on the island of Cyprus.

Ayia Napa is located on the southeast coast and is mainly known for its many beautiful beaches. In the resort town, you can find fantastic restaurants serving fresh seafood and at night, you can enjoy cocktails and other drinks at the many pubs and bars.

Right at the heart of the town, you’ll find Ayia Napa monastery, a charming monastery partially built underground. Inside is a museum that houses historic exhibitions about Cyprus.

The harbor is another one of the must-see places as it offers amazing views over the Mediterranean Sea. Sit back and relax in one of the many cafés and enjoy a good cup of coffee or a refreshing drink.

Just a bit outside of Ayia Napa, at Glyko Nero Beach, is the famous ‘Love Bridge’. This rocky arch was entirely created by mother nature and is, for sure, one of the most amazing natural attractions in Cyprus. It’s even possible to walk out onto it, but you have to be very careful.

Ayia Napa is a good destination in January because you can enjoy the warm winter sun without it being too hot.

Weather And Directions

Temperatures are usually between 55-65 degrees Fahrenheit – perfect for sightseeing.

The closest airport is Larnaca International Airport which is accessed by most international airlines. It will take you approximately 40 minutes to reach Ayia Napa by car.

Hotel Recommendation

Lina says, “The resort town is full of hotels ranging from luxury to affordable. Some of the best addresses include Limanaki Beach Hotel, Nissi Beach Resort and Cosmo Napa Boutique Hotel.”

There are also street parades, craft fairs, open-air concerts, and art shows. If you are traveling with teens, consider doing a musical pub crawl in Dublin. This takes you from pub to pub with a band of Irish musicians. It is fun and a pretty cool experience.

Weather And Directions

Average temperatures in Dublin range from -2°C to 11°C.

Most visitors fly into Dublin International Airport (DAA) directly and drive 20 minutes to the city center. Alternatively, you can also fly into Shannon Airport (SNN) and drive through the countryside to the city. It’s about a 2 1/2 hours drive from Shannon to Dublin.

Hotel Recommendation

Pamela says, “A great hotel located in the heart of Dublin is The Schoolhouse Hotel. It dates back to 1859 and has been a witness to the history of the city, including Dublin’s Easter 1916. The boutique hotel is also home to a Gastrobar for hungry visitors.”

Malaga, Spain

By Milijana from World Travel Connector

Malaga in southern Spain is one of the sunniest places in Europe in January.  It is perfect for a city break or winter staycation in Spain.

The beautiful city of Malaga is the capital of Costa del Sol. Costa del Sol, meaning Coast of the Sun, is famous for lots of sunshine and fantastic sandy beaches. Malaga beaches are some of the best in Spain and Europe overall. Although the sea temperature is not ideal for swimming in January, the sandy beaches in Malaga are a perfect place for sunbathing and enjoying delicious tapas with a glass of sangria in chiringuitos (traditional beach restaurants) in winter.

On top of that, Malaga is a modern Mediterranean city full of great restaurants (including nine Michelin star restaurants), traditional tapas bars, and bodegas. Tapas bar hopping is one of the best things to do in Malaga.

You might be surprised, but the city is rich with museums. There are more than 30 museums in Malaga. In addition, Malaga is the birth town of Pablo Picasso. Consider strolling through the museums and admiring the artwork of Pablo Picasso, especially in the colder months when there are no crowds to block your view.

For some fun, decompress in traditional Arab baths, take day trips and visit traditional Andalusian white villages in the area, or hike jaw-dropping El Caminito del Rey.

Weather And Directions

Daily average temperature in January is 63° F, but can reach 72° F during the day.

Malaga-Costa del Sol International Airport serves Malaga. The airport is the largest in southern Spain and one of the busiest. It connects Malaga with many Spanish and international destinations.

Turin, Italy

By Natalie & Robson from The Best Of Turin

Turin is the capital of the Piedmont region in Northern Italy. It is one of the largest cities in the country with rich history, incredible architecture, outstanding museums, delicious food, and it is surrounded by the impressive Italian Alps. Although it has all these great attributes, it’s still under the radar for many international tourists.

But what makes Turin a great European destination to visit in January?

The answer is easy. You can combine a winter city break with snowy slopes and winter sports in Turin.

When in Turin, you must visit the Royal Palace to learn about the Savoy Dynasty and how Turin became Italy’s first capital. Also, it has over 10 palaces and royal residences that are UNESCO heritage sites. Most of these palaces are open to visitors and are within the city or its surroundings. The most impressive ones would be Venaria Reale, Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi and Palazzo Madama.

Once you are done with the historical sites, you can visit some of Turin’s museums like the Egyptian Museum – one of the largest collections in the world, or the Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile, which pictures the important industrial past of the city.

Food is another big thing. Take time to stroll around the Porta Palazzo Market, one of the biggest open-air markets in Europe. Then, savor a nice meal at Mercato Centrale, known for serving the best local ingredients and traditional recipes paired with the world-famous Barolo wine from the region.

A stop at Valentino Park for the best views of the Po River is a must too. If it’s snowing, go there anyway. The park looks like a fairytale when covered in snow.

Talking about snow, Turin is only one hour and 40 minutes by train from Bardonecchia, one of Italy’s best-known ski resorts. The resort has 49 pistes and 21 ski lifts located 2,750 meters above sea level.

January is a good month to hit the slopes, as snow is guaranteed. Bardonecchia is a small mountain town that gets busy in winter. So staying in Turin is an excellent option as the city has more hotel choices. You can easily go for a day trip to the mountains. When in Turin, you will be surrounded by the snowcapped mountains all the time, offering fantastic views.

Weather And Directions

January is the coldest month in Turin, the average highest temperature in the city is 45ºF, and the lowest is 27ºF. It doesn’t snow much in Turin, so consider yourself lucky if it snows and the city is covered in white. In the mountains, it will be colder and snow is abundant.

Getting to Turin is easy. The city has a small international airport – Torino Airport, which is connected to the city by public transportation. Another option is to fly to Milan, which has 3 international airports. There are different ways to travel from Milan to Turin, including driving one hour. You can also get from Milan to Turin by train or bus.

Hotel Recommendation

Natalie & Robson say, “Regarding where to stay in Turin, the options are endless. You can book a room at a luxury hotel like Hotel Principi di Piemonte, or in a mid-range accommodation like Opera35 Suite&Studio. For budget travelers, the Hotel Tourist is a good option.

Lisbon, Portugal

By Mary from Be Right Back by Mary

Located in the south of Portugal, Lisbon is a popular destination in January for anyone looking to escape grey damp weather and Christmas season melancholia.

Spend four days in Lisbon exploring the highlights and main landmarks of the city. Some of the best things to do in the city include visiting the Alfama district, known as the oldest and most charming district of Lisbon. You will recognise the neighbourhood by the authentic orange coloured roofs.

St George Castle is also a must-see both for the history and the incredible 360° views it offers of Lisbon and the Tague Estuary Natural Reserve, the largest wetlands in Portugal. To avoid waiting in line at the castle, tickets can be purchased online in a few minutes.

Another fun thing to do in Lisbon is rent electric scooters and travel through the city to the Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge and the Jeronimos Monastery, a World Unesco Heritage Site.

In the winter months, a fair number of European destinations are very quiet with shops closed and restricted hours for museums. However, Lisbon is bustling all year round. Everything is open and the city feels alive! At the same time, the city doesn’t feel overcrowded at this time of the year, which means you won’t be waiting in long lines for each museum.

Weather And Directions

One of the main reasons for Lisbon being one of the best European cities to visit in January is, of course, the weather. With temperatures going as high as 60°F (16°C), and only about 7 days of rain, January is a great month to visit for anyone looking for a dose of sunshine.

The closest airport is Lisbon airport. Lisbon airport is very easy to navigate both at arrivals and departures. The heart of the city is only about a 30 minute drive with taxis, buses or ubers waiting for you.

Hotel Recommendation

Mary says, “If you are in Lisbon for a special occasion and are looking for a romantic hotel, Casa Balthazar is the place to be!”

Last Word

January is the best time to visit many European destinations. If they offer winter sports and outdoor activities, you will be able to enjoy all that is offered. On the other hand, if they do not, and it is low season, whether it is busy cities or beautiful beach destinations, you will get fantastic flight and hotel deals. In addition, you will only be sharing restaurants and attractions with locals without the fierce summer crowds.

Europe has many wonderful places to visit in January. Where are you going?

9 Glorious European Winter Sun Destinations

When the chill of winter is on the horizon, we start to think of warm weather escapes. Many think summer is the best time to visit Europe. This couldn’t be further from the truth. As well as being a magical spring and fall destination, Europe is a destination where you can have a typical winter wonderland holiday, and escape the chill with some glorious winter sun.

There are so many unique things to do in Europe in winter. From Christmas market cruises to winter walking & hiking holidays and, of course, plenty of great ski destinations.

But if you are looking to escape the cold and darker days, there are loads of gorgeous European sun destinations to choose from. Maybe you could even combine some of the best winter destinations in Europe with a snowy getaway followed by some basking in the sun.

These are some of the best warm winter destinations in Europe to escape the cold.

Table of Contents

If your heart is set on a European island vacation this winter, there are several stunning island destinations where you can escape the cold to enjoy some warm winter weather.

If you’re not sure exactly where you’d like to go, head to the south of the continent for some of the warmest countries in Europe during winter. Countries such as Portugal, Spain, Greece, Malta, and even Turkey.  The further south you go, the warmer it will be. Just don’t forget, while often sunny, the Mediterranean can also pack a punch with cold winds in winter.

The Canary Islands

A popular winter sun destination for many Europeans, the Canary Islands are a quick trip from mainland Portugal or Spain. While this archipelago does have some rainfall in the winter months, there are plenty of sunny days between December and April, offering some of the best weather in Europe during the winter season.

Seven islands make up this part of Spain, each with its unique offers. The most popular destinations include Lanzarote, La Palma, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. While the beaches are a big drawcard, hiking on the Canary Islands is very popular, especially during winter. You can even see a volcano in Lanzarote and hike through some fascinating vineyards in lava fields.

The Canary Islands boast an average temperature of 21°C (70°F) during the winter months, making it one of the warmest places in Europe in January. Thanks to the excellent winter weather, it can get still crowded in winter, so plan ahead for the best deals, or have your winter sun adventure in December when it is quieter.

Cyprus

For another incredible warm-weather winter escape, Cyprus is an excellent option for winter island holidays in Europe. This Mediterranean island has lovely, temperate winters. The best time to go? February and March are just about perfect. Cyprus has a beautiful climate that is very agreeable in the winter months, with an average temperature of around 22°C (71°F) during the days.

There is so much to do in Cyprus any time of year. Winter is still perfect for the island’s pristine beaches; it’s a much more congenial climate for exploring the island’s many historical sites, and it’s a great time of year for hiking in the Troodos Mountains and Akamas National Parks.

What many don’t know, Cyprus also has snow on the mountain in winter, and there is a small but good ski field offering around six runs from beginner to advanced. It’s one of those rare destinations where you can ski in the morning and hit the beach in the afternoon.

Another unique aspect of Cyprus is the island is actually two countries; Greece and Turkey. Crossing between the two countries in Nicosia is one of those must-do things to do in Cyrpus.

Greece

If you’re looking for the ultimate winter island escape, then Greece is another great option. The Mediterranean country has so many beautiful islands that make Greece one of the best warm-weather escapes in Europe. It’s also a time when you will get the best deals so you can stay longer and don’t have to compete with the crowds.

Leros and Mykonos are two great islands with mild winter temps. Expect an average temperature of around 17°C (62°F) between January and March. Another excellent destination for your winter break is Skiathos, which boasts fantastic beaches and scenery.

Some Greek Islands will become sleepier in the non-tourist months, but this isn’t always a negative. The Greek Islands are not just perfect for those looking for milder winter temperatures but also for a laid back vibe with plenty to explore. It’s also a great time of year to really get to know the local side of an islands culture.

Crete & Rhodes

Crete, for example, has some of the warmest winter temperatures in Mediterranean Europe over the autumn due to its southerly position. However, Crete lacks the retiree ex-pat populations of some other warm European destinations but a booming university population, much like Rhodes. So you can have the best tourist sights to yourself while still enjoying a lively island community and some winter sunshine.

If you’re more interested in an urban environment. With plenty of history, both modern and ancient, Athens is one of the most interesting in Europe. In December and January, Athens can be a little cool, but early and late winter are perfect temperatures for exploring the many outdoor historic sites. It’s much nicer to climb the Acropolis in 17°C (62°F) rather than 40°C + (104°F +) in summer.

Seville

Seville, the capital of Spain’s southern Andalucía region, is officially Europe’s warmest city year-round. With average daily temperatures of 16°C (61°F) and no shortage of sunshine, it’s not surprising people say, “Seville doesn’t really do winter.

When compared to the soaring temperatures of summer, which often exceed 40℃ (104℉), winter is the perfect time to explore one of Spains most magical cities.

The home of tapas and flamenco, there is so much to do in Seville. From the Real Alcázar to the Seville Cathedral and the magical Plaza España. Or take your time exploring the orange-scented maze of streets and plazas, one tapas bar at a time.

Seville is also an excellent base for day trips to some of Andalucía’s other warm-weather destinations such as Ronda and the route of the White villages or the seaside town of Cadiz. You can start searching the best areas in Seville to stay here.

Mallorca Island – Spain

Mallorca boasts beautiful landscapes and stunning architecture throughout its many towns and cities. With a pretty good all year round population, this part of Spain can still attract quite a lot of visitors in winter, so you’ll have plenty of options, but it is still advised to plan for the best prices.

If you’re looking for some great beaches, head to Cala D’Or, a haven for divers, but it also has fantastic views and an idyllic setting that will be perfect during your European winter break. The best time to go? January is the coolest month in Mallorca with an average of 15°C (59°F). While the rest of winter in Mallorca averages around 17°C (63°F).

Sicily

While visiting northern Italy in the winter means snow-capped mountains, Sicily in the south offers something completely different. The island is best known for its rich history, culture and food. While the entire island won’t be as temperate in winter as some destinations, you can find places in Sicily with mild temperatures in the winter averaging 14-17°C (57-62°F).

Much like Cyprus, Sicilians like to joke that they can ski on Mount Etna and in the morning and languish on a sunny beach in the afternoon. Stay close to the coastal areas exploring cities such as Paloma, Cefalu, Ragusa, Catania, Taormina and Siracusa, and you’re guaranteed mild winters days. It won’t be summer hot, but temperatures will be pleasantly warm for winter. Perfect for sightseeing.

Consider taking a winter road trip through Sicily to experience the variety and unique locations without the crowds and intense heat of the high summer season.

Madeira Island Portugal

Madeira Island, nicknamed the “Floating Garden”, is best known for its striking landscapes and year-round temperate climate. Perhaps this is why this autonomous island archipelago of Portugal continues to win the title of Best Island Destination both in Europe and the World. It is certainly one of the best places to visit in Portugal.

Although you can expect more rainfall in the winter months than in summer, you will find that this European island has lots to offer in terms of sunny days. The best time to visit? Late December through February are the best months in Madeira due to less rainfall, but you can expect an average temperature between 17°C (63°F) and 20°C (68°F).

One of the most popular things to do in Madeira is hiking, especially along the island’s famous Levada irrigation channels. Winter is an excellent time for exploring the islands incredibly diverse landscape, whether by car or foot. It’s also a lovely time to explore the island’s capital Funchal without the summer crowds.

Malta

Located in the southern Mediterranean, Malta is only 300 miles (500km) from the coast of Africa. Malta has been ruled by many different civilisations making it a unique culture. The island is best known for its historic architecture and cities with loads of museums, shops and restaurants to explore.

The best time to visit Malta depends on your plans. While Malta is also one of the warmest places in Europe in December, if you’re looking for a winter sun break, then January through March are the best months as there’s both nice weather and very little rainfall.

When you’re in Malta, you can enjoy the cities like Rabat and Valetta or head to more rural areas for sunbathing, hiking or diving. The mix of cultures means there’s a lot to see and experience, and an all year round population mean a lively experience without the summer crowds.

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Technically, Bora Bora isn’t anywhere near the other European destinations on this list; however, it is part of France. You are guaranteed fantastic winter sun on a South-Pacific island because it will actually be summer in Bora Bora. Actually, Bora Bora is warm any time of year.

Crystal clear water, amazing beaches, and a tropical environment make this one of the best “European” destinations for a winter sun escape. Enjoy a beautiful beach resort or explore the many other nearby islands. Snorkelling and scuba diving are two of the most popular activities thanks to the pristine tropical waters.

The best time to travel here? If you’re looking for winter sun in Bora Bora, January through March are the best months. You can expect an average of 27°C (80°F) during this period.

If you want to escape the cold weather back home, Europe can offer many sunny destinations to chase the winter blues away.

7 Best Places For Winter Sun Holidays In Europe – Hand Luggage Only

SHARES

So here’s the scene – it’s the middle of winter and despite your travels during the year (and constant insistence that you’re done with swelteringly hot summer days), you’ve found yourself smack in the centre of a cold wintery snap (with full-on grey clouds to match). That being said, you can still find yourself a shed load of winter sun holidays in Europe that are just gorgeous.

Some days, it feels like the sun doesn’t even come out. it’s just clouding up with intermittent rain which refuses to be snow! Because, apparently, it’s not cold enough (even though it definitely feels like it is 🤔).

Your thoughts start to turn towards escaping the cold, even if just for a few days for sunshine. Realistically, you can’t take a full week off… also, you kinda don’t want to, you just need a little respite from the cold and perhaps even more reasons to truly enjoy it.

Long story short – you want sunshine without having to travel 10 hours across the world for it (which sometimes comes with the added benefit of not having to spend a sizeable chunk of your paycheck on the said trip).

This is exactly why I wanted to share some of the winter sun holidays in Europe you can visit at a throw of a hat. And we’re talking sunshine you can feel, not just see!

Well, here are some of the very best winter sun holidays in Europe that are worth checking out!

1.) Canary Islands

If there’s one European destination you’re pretty much-guaranteed sunshine almost all year round, the Canary Islands are it.

The Brits and Germans have cottoned on to this for years and so it’s quickly become a mainstay for holidaymakers from the continent… which led to stereotyping of the islands as a popular beach lover’s destination but there’s so much more to the Canary Islands than just that.

Fuerteventura, for example, has dry mountainous area reminiscent of Morocco, pretty little Spanish villages, sand dunes that make you feel like you’re on a different planet and some of the bluest waters you’ve seen on your travels.

While technically, you can island-hop here, you’re more likely to have to pick just one to spend your time in.

Choose wisely, as they differ quite a fair bit some like La Gomera are a lot more green and tropical than say Fuerteventura which is arider and dessert-like.

It’s easily one of the best winter sun holidays in Europe with a surprising amount of diversity, too.

2.) Madeira

Madeira was something of a surprise destination this year.

For years, this Portuguese island has been pegged as a spot to go to for a relaxing holiday (ergo it’s popularity with retirees) but there’s just so much to see and do here that you’ll struggle to just sit in one spot when you visit – no matter what age you are.

The landscapes here are absolutely incredible – seriously, some bit feels like you’ve just stepped into Jurassic Park and you don’t have to go too far on the island before you find another “Wow!” moment – they’re everywhere you look.

Similar to the Canary Islands, we’ve put together a guide, not only showing you what Madeira looks like but also giving you the low-down on where to go, what to do and what to do when you visit. Check it out in full here.

3.) Malta and Gozo

Although a little colder than the two destinations above, Malta position lower down in Europe means the weather here is so much better than what you’d have back on the continent. This all makes it one of the best winter sun holidays in Europe for sure.

We’re talking turning up the temperate to 15 degrees higher (perhaps even more) and swapping that wintery gloom for some rejuvenating sunshine.

When you do visit Malta and/or Gozo, check out all the things you need to see and do in Malta and Gozo here.

4.) Azores

The Azores are worth visiting for so much more than the sunshine. It’s totally diverse and this makes it one of the best winter sun holidays in Europe; especially if you love nature.

The best way I can think of describing these Portuguese islands are like a “warm Iceland”. It’s lower latitude means than you don’t get the Northern Lights or Midnight sun here but you do get all that Geothermal activity is so synonymous with Iceland.

The scenery here is incredible (like seriously, it’s otherworldly in part), the weather is so much warmer although it is probably cloudier and just a tad rainier than some of the other destinations on here but absolutely worth checking out if you’re looking for a break from sub-zero temperatures.

5.) Crete, Greece

Lower down than the mainland of Greece (going lower down in Europe is almost always a good bet for getting warmer weather), Crete holds on to the sunshine just that bit longer and better than any destinations on the mainland.

Ideally, there would be many more Greek islands on here with Crete but a fair few Greek islands shut down for travellers in the winter months (you’d be so disappointed if you tried visiting Santorini in the middle of winter), unlike Crete which slows down but never really stops as the islands are far too big and have people on here that call it home regardless of what season it is.

6.) Cyprus

Generally, Cyprus gets so much more sunshine than most other European destinations. This makes it one of the best winter sun holidays in Europe that’s around 4.5 hours from the UK.

Similar to the above, the general recommendation, of course, would be to do as south as possible but to be honest, wherever you go in Cyprus, you’re bound to find the weather so much warmer than wherever else you might in on Mainland Europe (or indeed in the islands like the UK, Ireland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands…etc).

7.) Ibiza

The Spanish island of Ibiza does get colder in the winter month but not nearly as drastic as you get on the mainland (far from actually).

Ibiza is also one of those places that actually is fantastic to visit out of season. Prices are nowhere nearly extortionate as the summer months, the island still remains as gorgeous as it’s ever been.

(a fact that seems over-shadowed by Ibiza’s party reputation)

Plus, there’s barely any traffic and you just generally get more of a sense of what made the hippies decide to move to this fantastic Balearic island. This easily makes it one of the best winter sun holidays in Europe if you want to explore a quieter side to the island.

Has Europe always had such severe winters?

Winters in Europe, as is known, due to the proximity to the Atlantic, as a rule, are much milder than in Russia. The farther to the east, the more the influence of the rapidly cooling continent affects. But how will air currents develop in the troposphere, what processes will prevail – western or eastern? – the situation changes from year to year, and even during one winter, changes in the forms of atmospheric circulation can occur. When Eastern processes prevail, the “Russian winter” comes to Europe. But even in warm winters, the invasion of the cold of the north for Europe can turn into serious difficulties. The peculiarity of the geographical position of Europe is such that periods of comfortable mild weather can be abruptly replaced by bad weather, entailing significant problems and damage for Europeans, especially in winter.

Air Air Auroles (0.1ºС) in Europe in December 1891-2010.

Here are some retrospective extracts from recent weather reports.

2001:

Western Europe began the year with unusually warm weather. However, already in February, heat was retained only in the south of Europe (anomaly 2°C), and cold came to the north (anomalies -2 . .. -3°C), in March the anomalies increased to -4 … -5°C. Cold prevailed throughout Western Europe in April as well. Even in the north of Italy, in Austria and southern Germany frosts were repeatedly noted.

November and especially December in Western Europe turned out to be unusually cold again. December 2001 was the coldest December since the beginning of the last century. The previous cold record belonged to 1917. Even in Spain and southern France in December 2001. the temperature dropped to -18…-20 °С and lower. Large negative anomalies formed in the east of Europe – in Greece, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, Belarus (down to -6 °С), frosts here on some days reached -30 °С.

2002:

The winter was warm and generally did not bring much hardship.

2003:

The beginning of the year turned out to be very cold for Europeans, and January became the frostiest in the last 16 years. In France, Spain and Portugal, the weather was very similar to the “Russian winter”. The average monthly air temperature in January and February in most European countries was below the norm by 2-4°C, and in Hungary even by 5-6°C. The weather during these months was very unstable. Severe cooling was replaced by rapid warming. During one of them, an ice flood in the north-east of Romania caused huge economic damage to the country, heavy rains in the Benelux countries, in Germany, in northern France, in the UK, the Czech Republic and Slovakia caused a rise in water in the rivers, floods began. The melting of the Alpine snows at this time only exacerbated the situation. However, then in most European countries, the amount of precipitation began to decline sharply, and there was a trend towards a shortage of precipitation, which led to a severe drought in the summer.

The only exception was the Mediterranean basin, which suffered from bad weather for a long time. February was especially difficult. From Spain to Israel to Lebanon, more than twice the normal amount of rain fell, often with unusual snow. Snow storms hit the east of Spain, then the Bosphorus, then Israel, paralyzing traffic on the roads, in ports and in the air.

At the same time, cold air masses of Arctic origin more than once invaded the European continent. So, on Christmas Eve, a hurricane swept over Europe (wind speed in some places exceeded 40 m / s) led to a sharp cooling, which was accompanied by catastrophic snowfalls. Ice and sleet turned the freeways into a skating rink. Tens of thousands of people on the eve of the holiday were blocked in cars, trains and airport terminals. In the mountains of Bavaria, the air temperature dropped to -40 °C.

2004:

2004 was a generous year for natural disasters. It began with severe January cold weather in almost all of Europe. In the UK, the thermometer dropped to such unusually low levels that it gave rise to the local media to call the current situation “Siberian frosts”. The weather was very cold in Poland and the Baltic countries. In Turkey and Romania, people died from frost, and even in the vicinity of Madrid, a temperature of -20 ° was recorded. The cold was accompanied by intense precipitation almost throughout the entire territory, except for Scandinavia, the Baltic states and part of the Iberian Peninsula. Hurricanes with showers hit the UK, France, Denmark, the Benelux countries; floods began in Paris, Baden-Baden and Bavaria. Romania and Bulgaria have experienced their heaviest snowfalls in 40 years. Due to a snow storm, traffic through the Bosphorus was closed. In Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Ukraine, Israel, 2-3 monthly rainfall fell. In February, the elements continued to rage: heavy snowfalls paralyzed Greece, northern Italy and the Crimea; snowfalls, downpours and floods were noted in England and Wales.

2005:

If 2004 began in Europe with severe cold, then at the beginning of 2005, on the contrary, unusual heat came here. In a number of countries, for the first time in the dead of winter, spring phenological phenomena were noted – flowering of plants and fruit trees. The average monthly air temperature exceeded the norm in Central and Eastern Europe by 2-5º, and in Scandinavia by 4-6º. Only in the extreme south of Europe in Italy, Spain and Portugal was the air temperature below normal. In the mountains of northern Italy, frosts reached 30º, and in Rome the thermometer dropped almost to zero. Snow cyclones brought heavy snowfalls to Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. It was snowing even in the vicinity of Rome, Naples and Sardinia. Warm January weather gave way to February cold weather, which dominated most of the month throughout Europe, with the exception of Scandinavia and Great Britain. In Bulgaria, the air temperature dropped to -34º, which has not happened here for more than 50 years. Frosts paralyzed the activities of public utilities in Bosnia. Hospitals, schools and other children’s institutions were closed. In Greece, the thermometer dropped below -20º. Many lakes have frozen over, something that has never happened here. In France, extremely low temperatures in February led to an overall coldest winter in 33 years, although there were no severe colds in December and January. In early February, heavy snowfalls hit Austria, Germany, Bulgaria, Greece, and Albania. Snow drifts repeatedly paralyzed traffic on the roads. In many European countries, the monthly norms of precipitation were exceeded by 2-2.5 times.

Spring came to Europe late. Winter cold continued and even intensified in the first days of March. In France, the thermometer dropped below -30º; there has not been such a cold at this time of the year for the past 33 years. A similar air temperature was recorded in the south of Germany, which has not been observed here since 1901. In Rome, on the night of March 1st to 2nd, the lowest air temperature over the past 100 years was recorded, and in the mountainous regions of Italy, where the air temperature dropped to -32º – over the past 200 years. All temperature records were broken in sunny Spain: frosts hit 25º in the province of Navarre. At the other end of Europe: in the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia – the cold in March reached 30º. If in the second half of the month spring did come to the west of Europe, then in Eastern Europe the cold remained until the end of the month.

The bad weather that hit Europe at the end of November brought heavy snowfalls, turning into snowstorms, which is an extremely rare occurrence at this time of the year. In Münster (Germany), up to 50 cm fell in a month. snow. This has never happened here. Heavy rains flooded Italy. River level The Tiber in the Italian capital has risen to its highest level in 50 years. Across Europe, rail, air and road transport were disrupted.

Cold weather persisted in Western Europe in December as well. This was especially felt by residents of Spain and the south of France, where the average air temperature for the month turned out to be 2-3º below the norm. All of Europe in December was under a thick layer of snow. In places, up to 150 mm of precipitation fell during the day. As a result, roads were paralyzed and flights were cancelled. In the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and some other countries, the amount of precipitation for the month exceeded the norm by 2-2.5 times.

2006:

The bad weather with severe cooling that hit Europe in the last month of autumn and persisted until the end of 2005 continued into the beginning of the new 2006. The arctic cold for a long time bound almost the entire Eurasian space from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean with frost. The cold also penetrated the south of Eastern Europe. In Georgia, the air temperature dropped to -30°; in the east of Ukraine – up to -40 ° (there have not been such frosts here for more than 100 years). Thirty-degree frosts came to Poland. Deaths from hypothermia have been registered in Ukraine, Romania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and Greece. In Poland alone, 140 people died from the cold.

The frosts and snowfalls that hit Europe this winter have led to the fact that a stable snow cover has been established in latitudes much more southerly than usual. All Eastern and most of Central Europe are covered with snow. Snow keeps even in the north of Greece.

In the last month of winter, the western part of the temperate latitudes of the Eastern Hemisphere was under the influence of cold air masses. Therefore, in February, the average monthly air temperature throughout Europe, with the exception of Scandinavia, was significantly below the norm. In Eastern Europe, in Belarus, in eastern Ukraine (in Sumy, Poltava, Kharkiv, Dnepropetrovsk regions), in southern Finland, in Latvia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, as well as in the extreme west of the continent in France and Spain, it was colder than usual on average by 2-3° … In Kosovo, heavy rains and melting snow led to flooding at the end of February.
Spring did not come to Europe for a long time. Back in March, frequent intrusions of arctic air led to a sharp drop in temperature. So, for example, in Great Britain it dropped to -6°, which is absolutely not typical here for spring weather. As a result, the average temperature in March across Europe as a whole turned out to be below the norm. The last time this happened was 10 years ago in 1996. In Trondheim, the anomaly of the mean monthly air temperature was -5.3°, in Helsinki – -3.8°, in Ljubljana and Minsk – -3.1°, in Berlin – -2.8°, in Warsaw – -2.6 °, in Copenhagen – -2.3 °, in Prague – -2.1 °.

2007 :

Winter 2006-2007 in Europe was one of the warmest (due to December and January).

In the first month of the new year, the anomalies of the average monthly air temperature exceeded 2-6°, and January 2007 became the warmest in the history of the continent. The average air temperature for the month was 0.7° higher than the previous maximum set in 1936. Even in the first ten days of the month on the French Riviera, the air temperature was 19°. The swimming season has reopened, the cherry blossoms have blossomed. In France, the record for the maximum air temperature for this month, set in 1922, was broken. However, in the third decade, nature began to repay its debts to Europe for cold and snow.

At the beginning of the year, precipitation mainly fell in the countries of Northern and Eastern Europe. In places in the Baltic Republics, in Germany, Poland, the anomalies amounted to 200-300%. Abundant rains and winds accompanied a powerful storm system that passed through the north of the continent in mid-January. The wind speed exceeded 45 m/s. Snow fell in Europe only in the third decade of January, and the intensity of snowfall was immediately very high. Roads in Austria, the Czech Republic, Sweden were blocked by fresh snow, which led to numerous accidents and casualties. And in the south of Europe, precipitation was still not observed. On about. Crete had not seen them for three months in a row. Olive trees are under threat. Although the last month of winter saw sufficient precipitation in most of Europe, however, in the Alpine countries, in southeastern Europe, in Turkey, Finland and in southern Sweden, they were still noticeably less than the norm. For the ski resorts of France, Switzerland, Austria, this was a disaster. In fact, the winter holiday season is broken here. But on the 7th and 8th of February, the south of Great Britain was hit by a snowfall, recognized by British meteorologists as the heaviest not only for the whole winter, but also for the last few years. It resulted in airport closures, commuter rail shutdowns that caused havoc during peak hours, and miles of traffic jams on freeways. The damage from this natural disaster is estimated at &400 million. turned out to be the warmest in Europe since 1892 g, and the same as in the ETR, mainly due to anomalously warm December and January.

2008:

The winter of 2008 was the warmest since 2007.

Warm weather prevailed in Europe at the beginning of the year. In most of central Europe, temperature anomalies in January amounted to +2°…+3°, and in Scandinavia – +5°…+7°. As a result, the temperature of January 2008, averaged over the entire area of the continent, is the second in the ranked series. Only January of the previous year, 2007, turned out to be somewhat warmer. A lot of precipitation fell in the north of Europe: Germany, Poland, Scandinavian countries (1.5-2.0 norms).

Heavy snowfalls hit Bulgaria and Romania at the beginning of the month. Here, as well as in the west of the continent, in France and Great Britain, precipitation for the month was the norm. The rest of Europe was mostly dry.

The heat remained in February as well. Anomalies of average monthly air temperature turned out to be approximately the same as in the previous month. In a number of countries, new records of daily air temperature have been set. February 2008 is the fourth warmest in Europe with 1891 year. The second warmest was the winter. Its average temperature is 0.4° less than in the previous winter of 2006/2007, which is recognized as the warmest in the history of the continent. Now the winter of 2007/2008 is recognized as the warmest one. in Scandinavia. Few precipitations were observed in February. Only Finland, Sweden and Norway could boast of their abundance. Here, the amount of precipitation that fell during the month was mainly the norm, and in some places even slightly more. At times, wet and heavy snow fell in Greece and Turkey.

2009:

At the beginning of January, cold weather hit Europe. The air temperature in the north of Germany and Poland dropped to -25°…-29°. Colds like these have not been seen in the UK and Ireland since January 1991. Coastal sea ice appeared off the coast of England and Wales, extending up to 800 meters into the open sea. This has not been seen here for 18 years. In the Dutch port of Rotterdam, icebreakers had to be used to escort ships, which last happened 13 years ago. Then, however, the air temperature in Western and Central Europe returned to its usual values. However, the cold beginning of the month was enough for the monthly average temperature to drop below normal. In Belgium, Holland, northern France and Germany, it was 2° or more colder than usual. In Brussels, the anomaly is -2.0°, in Paris and Berlin – -2.2°, in Nuremberg – -2.8°.

During January, Europe repeatedly fell into snow captivity, then it was flooded with rain. The strongest showers took place in the Balkans, where in some places more than 100 mm of precipitation fell in a day. Therefore, their monthly amounts in Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Macedonia, as well as in the west of Turkey, exceeded the norm by 1. 5-2.0 times. Both at the beginning and at the end of the month, snowstorms hit France, northern Spain and Italy. The wind speed exceeded 50m/s and in some places snowdrifts reached a height of two meters, which led to the closure of airports and the cessation of traffic on the roads. France has not seen such snowfalls for more than 20 years. At the Milan Zoo, the animals were reportedly fed warm oatmeal and croissants, as normal food was quickly covered in snow and froze. In Southern Europe, precipitation in general for the month was more than the norm, approximately 1.5-2.0 times, and in Central and Northern Europe it was about the norm or less.

In February, conditions were generally close to normal, however, in the western part of Europe it was somewhat colder than usual, and in the eastern part – warmer. New maximums of daily air temperature were registered in Ukraine and Moldova. Last winter in Europe became noticeably colder than the previous two, but still its average temperature exceeded the norm.

In February, the continent, as in January, was either covered with snow or flooded with rain. At the beginning of the month, heavy snowfalls hit the UK, western France, and Spain. In the UK, they are rated as the strongest in the last 20 years. The snow penetrated far to the south, and even the Canary Islands were covered with a white blanket. In the middle of the month, snow fell on Sicily and at the same time powerful downpours whipped through the territories of the countries of southeastern Europe. And at the end of the month, snow charges hit the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. In the health resort beloved by Russians – Antalya – for the first time, local residents saw snow on the streets of their resort.

2010:

At the beginning of the year, the Siberian cold covered Europe. January 2010 was called “Russian winter” here. In Norway, Germany, Poland, Romania, Latvia, Belarus, Ukraine, Turkey, the thermometer dropped to record lows. In Stockholm, the average temperature anomaly was -5°, Berlin – -4.8°, Warsaw – -4.9°, Prague – -2.6°. Frosts raged from England to the Baltic states and Ukraine. Off the coast of Germany, for the first time in the last 25 years, icebreakers were used to guide ships to the port. coastal ice thickness exceeded 30 cm. Europeans have not seen such cold weather since 1987 True, those frosts were even more severe. For the first time in all these years, the temperature in January was below normal.

Only the countries of the southern part of the continent were in relative warmth: in Greece, Bulgaria, Italy anomalies were about +1°.

Heavy and sleet covered Central and Eastern Europe in January. Snowdrifts up to 1.5m. covered Poland and Germany. Due to snowfall, many ski resorts had to be closed. Traffic on the autobahns came to a halt. For the first time in 50 years, we saw snow in the south of Spain in Seville. Cyclones passed through the countries of Southern Europe in a continuous succession, flooding Spain, southern Italy, the Balkans, Turkey, and Cyprus with rain. In Montenegro and Albania, heavy rains have led to the highest rise in water levels in the border lake Skadar in 50 years. The amount of precipitation for the month exceeded the norm in some places by 2-4 times. And only in Northern Europe it was dry.

And in February, most of Europe, except for the southern countries, continued to suffer from severe frosts. This is especially true for Scandinavia, where the average monthly temperature anomalies are -2°…-4°. On some nights, the thermometer in Norway and Sweden fell below -40°. In general, the last winter for Europeans became very cold. Colds of similar duration were absent here for almost 20 years. This winter, the cold “Siberian anticyclone” was clearly stronger than the warm Atlantic cyclones that usually warm Europe at this time of the year.
Cyclones that crossed Europe, both along the southern and northern trajectories, carried a large amount of precipitation to almost all countries of the continent. Less than the norm was observed only in certain areas of Scandinavia and Germany, and in the rest of the territory – the norm and more. Moreover, in many countries: Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, the countries of the Balkan Peninsula, Belarus, Ukraine – they exceeded the norm by 2-4 times. For the first time in a quarter of a century, snow fell on the streets of Rome.

On the last day of the month Europe was hit by one of the most ferocious hurricanes. The element swept over Portugal, Spain, France and claimed the lives of dozens of people who, in general, could not leave their homes when they were flooded with water due to a dam break. Powerful streams destroyed the plantings, washed away the fertile layer of the earth on hundreds of hectares. 4500 hectares of agricultural land are not subject to restoration. Recently, hurricanes on the west coast of France have become an increasingly frequent occurrence.

Last winter, according to the British Meteorological Service, was the harshest and snowiest in England for the last 30 years.

2011:

In December 2010, cold air took over all of Europe.

Average air temperature anomalies (ºС) in Europe in December 2010

The average temperature of the month repeated the absolute minimum set in 1933g. Almost everywhere the anomalies of mean monthly air temperature are negative. Ireland has experienced the worst cold in the past 25 years. London, which has the longest record of weather records, has an absolute minimum air temperature in December, and the average temperature of the month is the lowest since 1890. The Swedish Meteorological Service reported that December 2010. – the coldest in the country over the past 110 years. Monthly average temperature anomalies were: -6.6º in Oslo, -6.4º in Stockholm, -6.1º in Berlin, -5.0º in Belfast and Prague, -4.7º in Copenhagen, -4.6º in Warsaw and Vilnius, -4.6º in Helsinki and Riga – -4.3º, Brussels – -4.1º, Paris – -3.7º, Vienna – -3.4º, Kyiv – -2.0º. In many countries of the continent, new minimums of daily temperatures have been set. Dozens of people became victims of cold weather in Poland, Germany, Austria, Great Britain.

The whole of Europe was drowned in snow and rain. Cyclones carried showers to the Balkans and Italy. In Serbia, the water level in the rivers has risen to the highest levels in the last 100 years. Again, as in January 2010, Skadar Lake burst its banks. Downpours have caused massive flooding and landslides in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. About 70% of the territory of Montenegro was under water. In Albania, these floods are considered the worst in the history of the country. The central part of Venice was flooded. Snowfalls covered Europe from Britain to the Urals. The snow paralyzed traffic. The airfields of Scotland, England, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Switzerland were closed. Tens of thousands of passengers are stranded in airports, trains and on the autobahns. Scotland hit by heaviest snowfall since 1963g. Snow fell on the island of Capri for the first time in history. Almost everywhere in Europe, the amount of precipitation for the month blocked the norm by 1.5-3.0 times.

After a strong December cold, very warm weather came to Europe in January. In the middle of the month the air temperature rose to +10º…+15º. But in general, for the month it turned out to be close to normal in most countries, with the exception of Eastern Europe, where the temperature exceeded the norm by about 2º (Poland, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, the Baltic countries, Belarus).

Precipitation this month was excessive only in the Baltic countries (2.0-2.5 norms), near the norm in the north of the continent (Poland, Germany, Benelux countries) and less than the norm in the countries located to the south. Due to the strong warming, there was a rapid melting of snow, which led to powerful floods in Germany, Holland, Belgium, and France. In February, temperature conditions were close to normal in most of Europe. However, in the east and northeast of the continent (Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic countries, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Moldova) it was noticeably colder than usual (anomalies -2 . .. -3º, and in Finland up to -5…-6º). New records for the minimum daily air temperature were also observed here. Fast ice has formed along the coast of Ukraine in the Black and Azov Seas. This phenomenon is quite rare. So, in Odessa it was last observed 30 years ago.

In the winter season, it is difficult to find a replacement for it in terms of the cost of rest and the variety of hotels. After the New Year holidays, Egyptian resorts become empty and, accordingly, prices fall in the second half of January. It’s time to take advantage of this circumstance and extend your New Year holidays for little money.

And although the January weather is still not very warm, and the water warms up weakly, the usual Egyptian winter summer continues. In addition, winter holidays in Egypt are an occasion to remember that this is a country with ancient historical and architectural monuments, and it is the best time to make interesting excursions.

So far you can fly from Moscow only to Cairo. And then transfer to your favorite resorts.

Family holidays in Thailand – the perfect holiday with children at one of the lowest prices among the countries of Southeast Asia. Acquaintance with ancient temples, luxurious palaces, tropical nature, caves, numerous islands, unknown peoples, elephant trekking, canal boat trips, great cheap and tasty food, January sales with decent discounts – all this partly compensates for the expensive flight.

Holidays with children in Pattaya, in the heart of the main resort area in Thailand, deserves special attention. For families with children, one of the 5 magnificent Centara hotels can be recommended.

    United Arab Emirates

Rest in the United Arab Emirates in January is a continuation of the magical New Year’s fairy tale. Royal luxury, Arabian hospitality, snow-white clean beaches, sun and warmth in the middle of a cold winter, a warm welcome for young guests – all this awaits tourists in the resorts of the UAE.

January is the coldest month of the year in the Emirates. There is no fever. During the day +24 °C, at night the temperature can drop to +14 °C. Water temperature +19…+ 22 °C. Swimming in the sea is not always comfortable. Relaxing on the beaches and sea bathing can replace heated pools.

The best prices for tours in the UAE

    Turkey

In January it is too cold for sea procedures in Turkish resorts. And even the most daring swim in the sea do not dare. The average air temperature in the resorts is from +11 to +15 °C. Beaches are closed, storms happen at sea. Why then go to Turkey with children in January? You can choose the best hotels at low prices, swim in the pool, walk a lot, go on excursions, take spa treatments.

In the next price segment of a beach holiday in the middle of winter, there are even more expensive destinations, such as the Maldives, Seychelles, Mexico, Brazil, Cuba and Bali. This, of course, is already exotic. However, in Cuba, January is a great time for sightseeing and for traveling around the country. January is high season in Brazil. A vacation in Mexico in January is a great opportunity to combine an interesting excursion program with a beach holiday.

    Maldives

The Maldives is a visa-free beach destination open to Russians. The water temperature in the Indian Ocean in January is +28 °C, the average daily temperature is +27 °C. The climate is quite suitable for relaxing on snow-white beaches under the bright sun.

    Canary Islands

In January, this region is moderately warm: daytime +25 °C, water +20 °C. Plus a variety of beach joys, parks, attractions, exotic fauna and flora.

The most obvious solution is to go to ski resorts in winter.

    Ski resorts in Europe

For winter trips with children, this is one of the priority destinations. We have already talked about the winter resorts of Bulgaria, Austria and Finland.

Many resorts in Austria and Finland are well prepared to welcome young skiers. But it is worth noting that in this case a cheap vacation will not work. In addition, European resorts are booked in large numbers by the Europeans themselves long before the opening of the season.

Of the foreign winter resorts for a budget holiday with children, the ski resorts of the Czech Republic, Poland and Bulgaria are quite suitable. For example, the cost of tours to ski resorts in Bulgaria in January (after the New Year) is noticeably reduced.

In the winter resorts of Bulgaria, you can not only ski, but also just relax and have fun with your children. Vacationers in the resort of Bansko, for example, can visit nearby museums, historical and architectural monuments.

    Krasnaya Polyana

An excellent alternative to the ski resorts of Austria, France and Switzerland is the fabulous Sochi mountain Krasnaya Polyana. You can ride here at the Rosa Khutor, Gazprom, Gorki Gorod resorts from mid-December until the summer.

All of these resorts have simple green and blue pistes that are great for beginners and children. In addition, there are a lot of entertainment for children.

For example, in the Gazprom resort there is a social and cultural center “Galaktika” with a water park, as well as a children’s town “Afrika” for kids, an ice arena, cinema halls, a children’s interactive developing club. This season, a special training slope for children will appear in the Pikhtovy Mountain Shelter complex, and a playground will appear in the Psekhako Mountain Shelter.

The Rosa Khutor resort organizes training in the Children’s Club, group skiing lessons for the whole family are possible, as well as sports competitions, animation and various entertainment events for children. There is a children’s club “Egorka” for kids from 3 to 7 years old.

In “Gorki Gorod” – an indoor water park Mountain Beach with playgrounds for kids, children’s pools, water slides. Its peculiarity is that a natural sandy beach has been built under the very roof of the water park. The water park, like the cinema, is located in the shopping and entertainment center. The resort has excellent conditions for skiing children.

    Excursion tourism

Winter excursion tourism has many advantages. It is possible to make various combinations of routes for countries and cities of Europe from the proposed options.

For a family holiday, any European city that has something that children will be delighted with, such as visiting PortAventura in Barcelona, Disneyland or Parc Asterix in Paris, Loro Parque in Tenerife, Legoland in Copenhagen or Germany.

A real winter fairy tale awaits children in Scandinavia. Those who are not afraid of frost and real winter can safely go on a trip to Finland, Norway, Sweden or Denmark.

Kayaking and Snorkeling with the Amazing Sea Turtles of Tenerife

    Spread the love

The waters of Tenerife in the Canary Islands are rich with captivating marine wildlife. The sea turtles of Tenerife are an amazing sight in the azure ocean bays of the island. We kayaked and snorkeled with the sea turtles of Tenerife in their natural environment. I’ll tell you in this post how you can too!

Posts may contain links to products and services I love. I may make a small commission from them, at no extra cost to you. Thank you for supporting my blog.

    Where is Tenerife?

Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, is located in the Atlantic Ocean about 700 miles west of Morocco. It’s closer to Africa than its home country of Spain. Flights from Madrid to Tenerife are plentiful. As are flights from London as Tenerife is a beloved vacation spot for the Brits. There are two airports on Tenerife. However, the south airport (TFS) is the most popular to fly into.

The tropical waters of the Atlantic around the islands have crystal clear high visibility. Perfect for seeing all kinds of marine life. Besides the sea turtles of Tenerife, marine fauna includes whales, dolphins, sport fish, stingrays, colorful tropical fish, and the harmless angel shark. Check out the tide pools for octopus, squid, sea anemones, and limpets to name a few of the things we saw.

Kinds of Sea Turtles in Tenerife

Five species of sea turtles inhabit the waters around Tenerife. The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) is the most common to see while snorkeling. The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) shows up periodically. The turtles of Tenerife can be seen year-round.

To tell the difference between green and loggerhead sea turtles, look at their shells. The naturalist on our whale watch trip with Biosean pointed out that green sea turtles have 4 lateral plates on their shells while loggerheads have 5 plates. We mainly saw green turtles with a possible loggerhead sighting.

Note the 4 lateral plates of the green sea turtle

How to Snorkel Responsibly with Sea Turtles

Sea turtles are a vulnerable species in the wild. Very few turtles survive hatching on beaches and making their way into the ocean where they face marine predators. Habitat loss, pollution, boat strikes, and coastal development also threaten the sea turtles of Tenerife. Therefore, sea turtles do not need any more stress from irresponsible snorkelers.

I snorkeled with the green turtles of Akumal on the coast of the Yucatan peninsula and learned more precautions to be aware of in swimming with turtles. First, the turtles are quite curious so they will often approach you if you give them space. Do not harass the turtles. Move away if they show stress or are going up for air. Additionally, quietly approach from the side of the turtle so you don’t surprise it. Don’t touch or try to feed the turtle. Finally, wear biodegradable sunscreen (or don’t use sunscreen at all) and take all trash with you as turtles might mistake litter for food.

Where to Find the Sea Turtles of Tenerife

We snorkeled at several beaches on Tenerife to search for sea turtles but the place we consistently found them was at La Arenita beach in Palm-Mar. Others have mentioned finding turtles at El Puertito beach, Abades Bay, and Punta de Teno. However, La Arenita was our go-to beach to kayak and snorkel with the sea turtles of Tenerife.

To get to La Arenita beach, navigate to the small town of Palm-Mar on the south coast of Tenerife. Follow the main road, Avenue el Palm-Mar, through town. Stay right on this road near a market and playground until you reach the beach. Park along the road or in spaces in the neighborhood.

The best way to get around the island of Tenerife is by car. While the bus system is good on the island, a car allows you to explore remote snorkeling beaches and get to other outdoor adventures on the island. I use Discover Cars for booking a car for my travels. They work with reputable rental agencies and offer reasonable rates.

How to Kayak and Snorkle with the Sea Turtles of Tenerife

There are two ways to see the sea turtles in the wild at La Arenita beach in Palm-Mar. The easiest option is to go with an organized tour specifically designed for snorkeling with the turtles and seeing dolphins. All the equipment is provided and the guides know where to find the turtles. This is an excellent option if you are newer to kayaking or need the proper equipment.

    Turtle tourTurtle tour

However, if you are a little more adventurous and know how to sea kayak and snorkel, you can put together your own DIY tour. We found this option so much better as we could spend as much time as we wanted snorkeling with the turtles. Both times we went we always saw more sea turtles than the tour groups as we spent more time in the water.

Creating your own sea kayaking/snorkeling tour

First, you need kayaks. We rented them from Gran Azul Tours which is next to the grocery store in Palm Mar. They have their kayaks stored on the beach so it’s super convenient. Pick up paddles and lifejackets at the office and walk down to the beach to launch.

We rented a double sit-on-top kayak for the 3 of us. The rental was 30 euros for 2 hours. Our plan was for 1 or 2 people to be snorkeling while the other person paddled the kayak nearby. If you have good upper body strength, it’s fairly easy to get back in the stable flat-bottomed kayak.

The area we found the most turtles was about a quarter-mile from the shore to the left of the floating fish farm. There is a yellow buoy–stay in front and to the left of it.

    Swimming with sea turtles

From the kayak, we could see the sea turtles poke their heads out of the water to check us out. We slipped into the water from the kayak and let the sea turtles approach. I noticed the turtles gulping something down. Looking closer, I could see it was tiny jellyfish, which is one of their favorite foods.

We watched several sea turtles for almost a half-hour. They were eating jellyfish and periodically surfacing for air. We couldn’t stop taking photos with the Go Pro. They were just so magical and curious.

We were surprised to see SCUBA divers below us enjoying the scenery and the turtles from below. A local guide, hanging out in the support boat for the divers, said the 2 turtles nearby were named Donatello and Margarita by the guides. We also saw what we thought was a loggerhead sea turtle but it was very timid and quickly left the area so we named it Timi.

Gear for Snorkeling with Sea Turtles

You will need the proper gear to do your own kayaking and snorkeling trip to see the sea turtles of Tenerife. Gran Azul Tours can provide you with a mask and snorkel. However, if you plan to do any other snorkeling on Tenerife, bring your own. Here is the gear I used and recommend.

    • Snorkeling set
    • Shortie wetsuit or Aqua skin
    • Go Pro with floating handle grip
    • Dry bag
    • Quick dry towel

Wrap Up of Kayaking and Snorkeling with the Sea Turtles of Tenerife

Besides snorkeling with sea turtles, the La Arenita beach area offers many kayak adventures as well. You can paddle over near the fish farm to see dolphins swimming near your boat. The fish farm attracts the dolphins hoping for an escaped fish meal. We sat in the kayak and watched them swimming and diving near the boat.

Also kayaking beside the giant cliffs of the bay to a sea cave is possible. You can poke your kayak into the sea cave. Just be mindful of the current and tide so you don’t get tossed about in a swell in the cave and hit your head.

If you want to spend time in this area to enjoy the sea turtles, great snorkeling beaches, and to go on a whale watch, I’d suggest staying in Palm-Mar or nearby Los Cristianos. Without a doubt, seeing sea turtles in their natural habitat will be a highlight of your trip to Tenerife.

    Number of sunny days

Beautiful sunny weather will delight tourists in July – as many as 30 sunny days per month. Great time to relax on Tenerife.

    Wind speed

The maximum strength of the wind is gaining in July to 6 m / s with gusts up to 8.8 m / s.

The largest. it beautiful place They consider real paradise for tourists. Its popularity increases every year – several million guests in the season – the best thing the confirmation.

    Climate and geographical features

The highest point on the island – El Pico Del Teide (Volcanic Peak Tage) has a height of 3718m above sea level and is almost in his centerAnd the whole Tenerife is, in fact, the mountain. In 1706, the eruption of the volcano destroyed several villages and the port city of Garachiko. In the early 20th century, scientists recorded a weak eruption in the western part of Tadeid.

Currently, the volcano is sleeping, only evaporation of sulfur is noticed in the crater area. Now the territory surrounding the volcano and he forms the main attraction of the island – National Park Tadeid.

On the coast of the island, coconut and dive palm trees grow, southern fruits, corn, bananas, milk. At an altitude of 500 meters Over the sea level begins the forests of evergreen laurel. Sometimes there is a famous dragon tree there, it is believed that the age of the oldest copies has several thousand years.

The territory of the island is divided by a mountain range into two parts, in each of them its features of the climate. North side Tenerife wet and cooler, most of the precipitation falls exactly there, and in the winter at the top of the volcano even snowing. Thanks to the abundance of moisture, the vegetation in this part of the island amazing imagination.

South coast Islands protected by mountain peaks from cold air mass And winds, so there is dry and sunny, there are almost no wind.

The diversity of the nature of Tenerife is impressive even by experienced travelers – in one day you can visit the snow-covered mountain peak, in tropical forest, soak in the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

When to go and how to choose a place?

The choice depends on several factors:

    1. Season – In winter, after all, a few degrees are cooler, especially on the northern part of the island. If you want to sunbathe and get enough in warm water – in winter it is worth preferred to the southern part.

Famous resorts of the South: Playa Paraiso, Playa de Las Americas, Los Cristianos, Al Medano. On the north beaches, a comfortable temperature for swimming from August to October; San Andres, Pardo de la Cruz, Los Gigantes – the most famous of them.

    2. All the nuances of the flight to the island of Tenerife – read our next.

    3. Preferences On vacation – if you plan most of the time to devote to a detailed study of attractions, you can settle closer to the most interesting. For example, near the city, the villaflor at an altitude of 1400 meters is located a completely unearthly landscape, created by nature itself from the ashes and frozen lava, is called the lunar (Paisaje Lunar).

In the east of the island in the town of Guimar, six mysterious stone pyramids are towering. No one knows when and how they appeared and for what purpose were erected. There are different versions, but nothing is known exactly.

In the center of the Orotava Valley there is an old city of La Orotava, he appeared before the first arrival of the Spaniards on the island. Aristocratic mansions, paved bridges – everything breathes ancient. The center of Spain declared its cultural heritage.

    4. In principle, you can take a car for hire and drive around the island at any convenient time. For lovers of relaxing rest There is a lot of varied beaches in any part of the island: Benico, La Techita, Las Vistos, El Kamison and many others. The entrance to them is free everywhere, only the use of a sun bed, umbrella, toilet and other services optional, for example, water rides and entertainment are paid.
    5. It is worth considering in advance what I want more – if noisy night entertainmentwill suit the largest resort of Las America. Disco, restaurants and all kinds of cafes, where life does not freeze for a minute – this resort often chooses young people.

Las American is the largest water park “Akvaland”, it offers water enrants, swimming pools and all sorts of entertainment. Calm holidays for families with children and older people are better to look for the resorts of Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje. Luxury hotels in these places are remarkably suitable for a romantic holiday.

    6. Tenerife is located near the coast of Africa, near the equator, so you can rest all year. There is no winter cold and summer exhausting heat. The mild climate presented Tenerife name – “Island of Eternal Spring.” Since the fluctuations in air and water temperatures during the year are insignificant, in any season the island gives a comfortable rest.

6 Best Natural Pools In Tenerife – Our Wanders

Natural pools are special – and rare. But not in Tenerife where we bumped into lots of these very own, naturally formed swimming pools of the ocean while exploring the coast. At some places, local authorities intervened to make the pool safer, or they promptly built a swimming pool right next to the ocean so that waves crash into it. However, most pools were formed by the waves and the lava that flowed into the ocean. In this post we’re telling you about the best natural pools we found in Tenerife.

But a word of caution first. While it’s a unique experience swimming in a pool like this, it could be dangerous, too. Big waves could sweep you out into the ocean or hit you to the rocks. The general rule is to swim in the pools only when the ocean is calm, and possibly at low tide. The swimming pools are somewhat safer, but there are times when waves just sweep through them (a fascinating sight, by the way). They’re closed during that time – and some of the natural pools are also closed (by a barrier or chain at the entrance) when they’re not safe to swim.

So even though we’ve never seen so many natural pools anywhere else as in Tenerife, we only swam once – and in a natural swimming pool. This was not only because the waves were large, but also because sea temperatures in March and early April were not what we’d call pleasant for swimming (18-19°C).

Nevertheless, we admired these spectacular lava pools, made of dark black lava rocks and hit by giant, powerful waves. A magnificent sight.

    Table of Contents

El Caletón de Garachico (Piscinas Naturales de El Caletón), Garachico

The first one we visited were the Garachico pools. Yes, El Caletón de Garachio is not only one pool but a series of them. Some are deeper and larger, some are shallower and smaller – just the ideal size for a toddler to play in the water, and so did our Tomi. The pools are natural, but a paved walkway connects the rocks, and stairs were built to help you access the pools. Except for the human made swimming pools, the Garachico rock pools are probably the most protected of Tenerife’s natural pools.

The pools were formed as a result of the eruption of 1706 that changed Garachico’s fate, turning the busiest port into a laid-back coastal small town by filling up the seabed with lava. However, this is the lava that created the Garachico lava pools, too, giving tourists a good reason to visit the lovely town.

Address: Av. Tomé Cano, s/n, 38450 Garachico

AdvertisementsCharco de La Laja, San Juan de la Rambla

Another northern coastal town, San Juan de la Rambla is home to the La Laja pools (charco is the word for pool in Spanish). We parked our car on the street and walked to the La Laja viewpoint. Stairs took us down to the rock pool from there. La Laja is a single pool, but deep enough and very picturesque.

Giant waves swept through the pool as we walked around. It was definitely not the time for jumping in, rather for taking pictures. 🙂

Address: C. Antonio Ruiz Cedrés, 47, 38420 San Juan de la Rambla

    Charco del Viento, La Guancha

Not far from La Laja, there’s another small town, La Guancha with another set of natural volcanic pools surrounded by lava rocks: Charco del Viento. It has four pools to choose from when sea conditions allow.

    Advertisements

To access the pools, we had to drive down a narrow road passing by banana plantations, then a parking lot awaited at the end of it. It seemed to be big, but on a hot, calm day I imagine it filling up quickly. Our day was sunny but not calm, and the power of the waves was impressive, it even created little waterfalls while crashing into the largest pool.

Address: Charco del Viento, 38441 La Guancha, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

    Charco Don Gabino, Los Silos

The volcanic rock pool of Don Gabino is on the coast of Los Silos, and stairs give access to it. We couldn’t drive all the way there, so we left our car where the paved road ended and walked to the pool in about 10 minutes. But this walk turned out to be the highlight!

    Advertisements

An easy, almost flat trail runs along the coast, and we continued further after Charco Don Gabino. The coastal basalt rocks were fascinating, the waves were crashing hard against them, it sounded like thunder as they filled the coves.

After walking back to Charco Don Gabino, we realized there’s another lava rock pool if we walk a few minutes into the other direction…

Address: Charco Don Gabion, 38479 Los Silos

    Charco Los Chochos, Los Silos

That was Los Chochos, another rock pool that’s about 2 meters deep and can be accessed by stairs. Not that anything tempted us into the water, because it was drizzling, strong wind blew – and the waves were magnificent!

    Advertisements

Address: Charco Los Chochos, 39 Carr. El Puertito, 43, 38479 Los Silos

Piscina Natural Mesa del Mar, Mesa del Mar

Mesa del Mar offers a variety of options for swimming. The large natural swimming pool can be seen from the winding road that took us down there. This is a real swimming pool, not made of basalt rocks but built by humans, however, the mighty Atlantic Ocean fills it with water, and it’s a free public pool.

    Advertisements

After a short visit, we walked through the tunnel to La Arena Beach where we spent most of our day. We even had a swim in the ocean. La Arena Beach is a beautiful, natural black sand beach with views of El Teide in the distance. It’s somewhat protected, but waves can still be large, so you need to be careful.

You’re still not out of swimming options though. Walking to the end of La Arena Beach and then further on the promenade, we found natural rock pools, as well. Sea conditions were not calm enough to use them, but they looked awesome. So Mesa del Mar is really a 3 in 1 when it comes to enjoying the water, and hopefully at least one of the available options will be safe. 😀

Address: C. Mesa del Mar, 132D, 38358 Mesa del Mar

+ 1: Natural swimming pools in Tenerife

In addition to the rock pools, there are some more natural swimming pools that are similar to the one built in Mesa del Mar. We’ve been to the swimming pools at Punta del Hidalgo (Piscina Natural Punta Del Hidalgo) and at Bajamar (Piscinas de Bajamar). Both offer great views of the lush green Anaga Mountains towering above them.

Punta del Hidalgo has one swimming pool, but it’s surrounded by a large tide pool area which is suitable for toddlers and small kids, too, because most pools there are sheltered, shallow and warm – at least at low tide.

Bajamar has a nice, artificially protected, small sandy beach and three natural swimming pools right next to it. One of the three is specifically for kids, and the two other ones are directly by the water, so waves crash into them. Even though waves are often big here, the beach and the swimming pools are protected enough to provide a safe swimming opportunity, and they make Bajamar one of the best places for families on the north coast of Tenerife.

All the pools on a map

In case you have any trouble finding these pools, we marked all of them on the map below:

And no, they’re not all the natural pools in Tenerife, they’re those that we visited. There are Charco de Isla Cangrejo in Los Gigantes, Charco de El Rayo in Buenavista del Norte or the natural swimming pools of Alcalá. Tenerife surely offers a large selection, and they all have their own charm.

Where to go to the sea in April and May – Moscow and the region

We tell you where to bring a beautiful sea tan and photos of sunsets in the spring

      March 28, 2019

      7 minutes to read

Not everyone manages to get a vacation in the summer. But if you have a couple of weeks off work in April or May, this chance should be used! At this time, in many resorts it is already possible to swim. In Russia, of course, even on the Black Sea coast, the water warms up only by the end of May. But abroad there are many countries where in April you can have a great time on the beach.

April and May is still a relatively low tourist season: at this time you can find cheaper accommodation and fewer people on the coast. By May, prices begin to rise, the flow of tourists increases, but the beaches are still not crowded. We’ll show you where to go.

      Israel

In Israel, the beach season opens in April, and it is better to pay attention to the Red Sea resorts, especially Eilat. In April, the water temperature here reaches +23 °C, while in the Mediterranean Israeli resorts it rarely rises above +18 °C. By May, the Mediterranean coast becomes warmer.

Eilat is famous for its coral reefs, which attract divers from all over the world. Not far from the city is the Timna Valley. A huge park has been created in it, in which historical sights coexist with natural ones.

A direct flight from Moscow to Eilat takes approximately 4 hours.

      Thailand

Thailand is perfect for an April vacation. The water is warm, up to +29 °C, and the hot and humid rainy season has not yet begun – it will come in May. The most famous resorts of this country are Pattaya, Koh Samui and Phuket. Beach holidays are well developed here – you can swim and sunbathe, scuba dive or rent a boat for a boat trip.

You can also find activities outside the beach. Someone will be interested in the vibrant nightlife of Bangkok, someone will prefer shopping in modern shopping centers and exotic oriental bazaars, and someone will be attracted by excursions to ancient temples and palaces or to natural parks.

A direct flight from Moscow to Phuket takes about 9 hours.

The “Unlimited Internet Abroad” service from Tele2 will help you stay in touch in instant messengers and social networks at your favorite seaside resorts.

Connect for free – pay only when you use the Internet while traveling.

      Canary Islands

In the Canary Islands in April the water warms up to +18-19 °C. In principle, you can already swim. But in May it gets warmer, and most tourists try to visit Tenerife, Gran Canaria and other islands of the archipelago this month.

This is a great place for swimming, windsurfing, diving and sea fishing. However, it should be borne in mind that the island of the island of strife. For example, the most popular – Tenerife – is famous for its beaches, there are many tourists here. Puerto de la Cruz is quieter and calmer, but the coast is rocky, and it is better to swim in the pool next to the hotel. If you wish, you can organize a rich leisure program for yourself – from bars and discos to climbing to the top of the Teide volcano.

It takes about 7 hours to get from Moscow to Tenerife by plane.

      Hainan Island (China)

Hainan is perhaps the most popular Chinese resort. It is located south of mainland China and has a subequatorial climate. There are more than 300 sunny days a year, and the water warms up to +28 °C by the beginning of April. In May, the water can be even warmer, but the air temperature also rises, and not everyone can tolerate the heat well.

The main resorts on the island are Sanya and Haikou. Here you can just swim, or you can go diving or sea fishing. On the island of Hainan there is a huge Nanshan Buddhist culture park, Bethel-Nat ethnic park, where tourists get acquainted with the culture of the local Li and Miao peoples, as well as many other attractions.

From Moscow to Hainan Island can only be reached with a transfer: the flight will take from 14 to 28 hours.

      Cuba

Due to the peculiarities of the Cuban climate, there is neither autumn nor spring on the island – only winter and summer. April is the last month before the onset of the hot, humid season, and many tourists prefer to come to Cuba in April. The water on the coast near Havana, Varadero and Santiago de Cuba warms up at this time to + 25-27 ° C.

The wind gets stronger closer to the beginning of May, which cannot but please fans of surfing and paragliding. Beach holidays can be interspersed with acquaintance with numerous architectural sights and visits to national parks, for example, the famous Sierra Maestra Park.

From Moscow to Cuba you can fly without transfers in about 12-13 hours.

      Morocco

Morocco is a country located in northwestern Africa. The beach season here begins in June, but if you are interested not so much in swimming as kiting, windsurfing and other similar activities, pay attention to Dakhla. The city is located on a narrow peninsula, forming a long narrow bay, well protected from ocean waves.

The water temperature in the bay in April-May usually does not rise above +19°C, but there is a good even wind here, which attracts those who are fond of water sports. The main attractions of Dakhla are the fortress and the cathedral, built by the Spanish colonists who founded this city in the 16th century.

A direct flight from Moscow to Casablanca, the largest city in Morocco, takes approximately 6.5 hours.

A cool vacation by the sea can be organized not only in summer. Discover new vacation destinations and start sharing your impressions on social networks before others – “Unlimited Internet Abroad” will help you.

Tenerife in May. Holidays in Tenerife in May Holidays in Tenerife in May

People go to Tenerife all year round and the temperature in the ocean rarely drops below +20, but it is believed that it is in May after a short off-season that the beach season begins. Read on the Tour-Calendar what Tenerife island can please you in May!

Weather in Tenerife in May and May holidays

In May, Tenerife gets warmer. The May temperature on the island during the day is +21 degrees, but sometimes it is hot. At night it is still only +14 degrees, so if you go here at the end of spring, bring warm clothes. The water temperature in May warms up to +20 degrees, so there is no talk of a full-fledged bathing yet, but it will be quite pleasant to run on the water and refresh from time to time. In the south of Tenerife, the weather is mostly dry, but in the north it rains a little more. The closer to the end of May, the less likely it is to rain. Humidity is moderate – 64%. In general, compared to March and April, the weather in Tenerife in May is more comfortable, there are much fewer unpleasant winds, as well as rainy days.

      Beach holidays

You need to start your holiday in Tenerife with a visit to the beach, like all normal tourists! In May, you will be greeted by a friendly, but still cool ocean, and you will need a little courage to enter it

      Amusement parks

There are many places in Tenerife that will be interesting for your children to go, for example: Loro Park, Siam Park , Aqualand, Orlov Park, Jardin Botanico, Monkey Park, Ostrich Farm and many others. See how much fun children and adults have at the wave attraction in Siam Park!

      Tenerife trips

      Tropical whale encounters

In May, you can also watch the Tropical whales that swim between the islands of La Gomera and Tenerife and greet everyone with their flips in the water!

      Festivals and celebrations

In May, Tenerife hosts a lot of interesting events and festivals, the most grandiose of them is Canary Islands Day, celebrated at the end of May, when various cultural events, colorful performances and concerts are held. In addition, in May, Los Realejos hosts a three-hour fireworks show, which is just captured on video (first you will see a photo of the preparation for the fireworks, and then the video of the show itself).

The end of spring is the beginning of the holiday season. It is already warm, but there are still few tourists. My husband and I were there in the second half of May, the average temperature is 22°C during the day, 16°C at night. It rained only once (we rested for two weeks). As for swimming, the water warms up no more than 19 ° C, we swam. But the coast here is quite rocky. Playa de la Arena is a nice beach with black volcanic healing sand.

      What to bring

Considering the fact that it can be cool at night, be sure to take a thin jacket or sweatshirt, and appropriate shoes. But don’t forget sunscreen, glasses and a hat.

      Cultural program

In order to enjoy the beauties of Tenerife, we rented a car. We visited:

      • Mount Teide – the highest point of the island.
      • Pyramids of Guimar – according to legend, they were built by the Guanche tribe from volcanic ash. There are 6 of them in total, and they are in the form of steps.

From outdoor activities: you can go water skiing, scuba diving or visit Siam Park.

Also in May, there are two celebrations on the island: the Feast of the Cross (near Santa Cruz de Tenerife), and at the end – a three-hour fireworks display in Los Realejos; day of the Canary Islands (you can try authentic local dishes, watch local entertainment – the pastor’s jump).

Why you should visit Tenerife in May

This is the best time to explore the island’s sights and enjoy the scenery. And there really is something to see!

Tenerife is the largest island in the Canary Islands archipelago. The shores of Tenerife are washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The island is not that big, but nevertheless it is the most populated in Spain. Even the name of the island is very pleasing to the ear: Tenerife… Many people know this place, but, unfortunately, only by hearsay. Tours in Tenerife are not always cheap, besides, you need a visa, so our compatriots prefer not to bother and fly to the good old or.

Well, Tenerife is a more cultural resort, although it can also offer a quiet, secluded vacation, and noisy fun. Tenerife is the “island of eternal spring”, because it is always warm here, because the island is located at the latitude of the Sahara desert and the central parts of countries such as Morocco, Algeria and northern Libya. The climate of Tenerife is very mild and pleasant, and allows you to relax at any time of the year. But today I would like to talk about what a holiday in Tenerife is like in May.

On average, the island is very warm in May
, the temperature fluctuates between +22°C and +27°C in the first half of the month and between +20°C and +25°C in the second half of the month. That is, by the end of the month, temperature drops become smaller, but there is also a slight general drop in temperatures (do not worry, by 1-2 degrees). Nights in Tenerife are quite warm
, temperatures are approximately the same throughout the month, fluctuating between + 17 ° С and 20 ° С. Not hot nights, of course, but not cold either.

Thus, it is quite warm, pleasant, the sun shines in the sky for almost the whole month, the length of daylight hours is 13-13.5 hours a day. You can safely throw summer sundresses, T-shirts and flip flops into a suitcase, but do not forget about light jackets in case of cool evenings.

      May precipitation in Tenerife
happen, but they are very, very few. In May, no more than 5.5 mm of precipitation can spill over the island (that is, it is one cloudy or rainy day), and in general, May is one of the driest months of the year (only June and July are dry, August is the same as May) . Winds blow off the coast, but they are not cold, and during the day they bring a pleasant coolness.

      Ocean
, beautiful ocean in May, unfortunately not so warm in May. The water temperature is about the same throughout the month, well, except for a tiny warming by the second half of May (by one degree, which you are unlikely to feel). The average water temperature off the coast of Tenerife in May is +20°C, sometimes it drops to +19.5°C, sometimes it rises to +20.5°C. Not to say that the water is warm – I would say that it is cool, but you can quickly swim. If you are a cold person, then you can always just wet your feet or admire the gorgeous views of the ocean. Comrades, the ocean, not the sea! And, for that matter, lying on the beach, you “risk” beautifully tan in May.

If you come to the island on May 1, you will find the celebration of Labor Day
(maybe not quite pompously, but they celebrate it). On May 30, the island hosts a rather magnificent celebration of Canary Islands Day
. It is celebrated, as you might guess, throughout the Canary archipelago and has been celebrated since 1821, when the Canary Islands were proclaimed a separate province within Spain.

Fiestas de la Cruz is of no small importance
. This is one of the main events in the holiday calendar of the city of Los Realejos (in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife). The roots of the holiday rest in the 15th century, and gradually, from an event of an exclusively religious nature, the celebration began to be less strict, and began to include dances, bonfires (currently fireworks) and mass celebrations – this continues to this day (the celebration falls on the night of May 3).

May weather and lack of precipitation allows tourists to make excursions around the island and neighboring islands. The island is small (only about 120 km long and about 75 km at its widest point), so you can easily go around it up and down during your vacation. And there are many interesting things on the island! Let’s start with the fact that the island, although small, but with a rich history. The first people in Tenerife appeared approximately between the 5th century BC. e. and the beginning of our era – they were the Guanches, in fact, the indigenous population of the Canary Islands. In the subsequent history of the island, there were also many remarkable events, and all this was reflected in the appearance of larger cities. For example city Santa Cruz de Tenerife
is a wonderful, cozy, warm town with a number of attractions. For example, here you should go to Plaza de España
(the largest and most important square in the Canary Islands). It is relatively new, having been built in 1929. In the center of the square stands the Monument to the Fallen, built after the Civil War (a tower in the shape of a cross with an observation deck at the top, and an underground chapel at the base of the monument). Also on the square is a fountain with sea water. The square is especially beautiful in the evening, when it is illuminated by a garland of drop-shaped light bulbs.

Also not to be missed in this city Masonic Temple of Santa Cruz de Tenerife
, one of the main Masonic temples in Spain and the first in the Canary Islands. The temple was built at the very beginning of the last century.
Go to Museum of Nature and Man
(Archaeological Museum), where expositions are dedicated to the geology, archeology, flora and fauna of the Canary Islands. And, of course, Auditorio de Tenerife
, one of the most recognizable buildings in Spain and a symbol of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This is a very unusual post-modern opera house, which was built in 2003.

Next, Town of San Cristobal de la Laguna
, which is located near the capital (from there you can get there by tram), if you go “inland” of the island, is on the UNESCO lists in Spain.
The city, finally formed by the 16th century and once the capital of the Canaries, impresses with its structure: straight streets, intersecting, formed quarters. It is also the first city that is not a fortress, and the principles of its structure were used by the Spanish in the construction of cities in North America.

Be sure to visit Royal Basilica of Candelaria
. This is a Catholic church of incredible beauty in the city of Candelaria. Our Lady of Candelaria is the patroness of the Canary Islands.

      And, of course, Guimar Pyramids
      – six small pyramids in the city of Guimar on the southeast coast of the island of Tenerife. Scientists suggest that the stepped pyramids are just heaps that local farmers made (they simply threw off unnecessary stones when plowing the fields). Then scientists suggested that the Guanches lived in the pyramids. There is no consensus yet, but the pyramids are definitely worth a look in person. By the way, they are now located on the territory of the ethnological park with an area of 65,000 m².

Another attraction of the island is its natural beauty. For example, more active people can go to Teide
      – the volcano and the highest point in Spain, as well as the highest peak in this ocean. The crater of the volcano is very large – 17 km (this is the third such large crater in the world). Teide is currently dormant, and the last eruption occurred in 1909. It is not necessary to climb to the crater, but you can admire this colossus closer. By the way, pieces of the frozen lava of the volcano are used to make souvenirs.

      Another attraction – Hell’s Gorge
. This is a nature reserve in the southwestern part of the island in the municipality of Adeje. Naturally, it is assumed that the ubiquitous Guanches once lived in this gorge (so they decided on the rock paintings). For tourists, she developed a hiking trail (it starts in Adeje) 6.3 km long. At the end of the trail you will see a small waterfall – and this, for a moment, is the only source of fresh water in Tenerife! The waterfall is huge, the water flies from a height of 80 m, but in May it is not as full-flowing as in other months of the year. True, the entrance to the trail was closed due to two accidents, but perhaps someday the road to the waterfall will again become available to tourists.

In conclusion, I would like to say that, despite the slight disadvantages in the weather (cool ocean, for example), the month of May is very suitable for a trip to Tenerife, and the trip itself simply cannot but be remembered and liked!

One of the best resorts in the world, Tenerife blooms in May like never before. Nature finally woke up, and bloomed here, as the famous song says, “even a stump.”

In fact, nature itself endowed this region with invaluable riches, which have long been appreciated by people who love the beauty of this region. Our travel company Tez Tour offers those who wish to travel to a world-class resort.

Holidays in places like Tenerife bring great pleasure from walking along the sandy seashore, breathing fresh sea air, getting sunbathing, and every molecule of the body is permeated with the warmth and light of this most wonderful place on earth.

This is especially felt in May, because the cycle of renewal of nature is gaining momentum, nature feels it and all this is transmitted to all life on earth.

The resort of Tenerife in May is magnificent. Not only nature, but also the organizers of recreation in the resorts, have prepared for the influx of tourists, which increases at this time of the year.

The last month of spring is the most comfortable holiday period of the entire spring-summer season. At this time, everything is still fresh, the heat has not yet tired the plants, they are full of strength and beauty. In parks and gardens, nature rejoices in warmth and light, its extraordinary energy is transmitted to man. Such an atmosphere has a great effect on the well-being of vacationers.

Wonderful resort, which opens the season in May, hospitably opens its virtual doors to all vacationers. Tenerife in May warms up from the bright and almost constant sun. This month, precipitation may fall, but not more than a third of the month.

According to meteorological observations, May is usually a sunny month, and it can rain for about a week, no more. The air temperature rises to + 20 + 23 ° C, and on some days + 25 + 26 ° C.

However, the earth has not yet warmed up enough, and therefore in the late evening and at night it is only +10+14°C. As for the water in the sea, it all depends on how warm the whole month turned out to be, but it is already warm, it allows you to swim and its temperature reaches +17 + 20 °C.

Such water, of course, is good only for hardened people and for fans of sea swimming, but there are enough such lovers on the beaches of Tenerife. There are even more on the beaches of those who like to sunbathe near the water under the mild gentle sun. There is always an opportunity to bask in the sun on the beaches of Tenerife hotels, here you will be given sun loungers or deck chairs, if you want, then umbrellas.

In Tenerife, the weather is mostly dry in May, with more chances of rain in the north. Tyutchevskoe “I love a thunderstorm in early May” – very suitable for the climate of the resort. A fast-passing thunderstorm brings incredible ozone freshness and only improves the overall atmosphere.

The wind subsides by the end of the month. Humidity is quite moderate – 64%. In general, the weather in May is comfortable, there are fewer unpleasant winds, as well as rainy days. Therefore, you can plan a vacation not only on the beach, but also trips to historical sites or other places of entertainment.

On Tenerife in May, you will find a varied holiday in amusement parks, life in nightclubs and institutions, excursions and festivals, and the most diverse beach holiday in the most picturesque places on the island.

Our travel company Tez Tour offers the most interesting places for recreation, where you can relax and have fun. Children will be especially pleased, who can be taken to Loro Park, Siam Park, Aqualand, Orlov Park, Jardine Botanico, Monkey Park, Ostrich Farm and many others.

An unforgettable attraction that you can visit in May is the meeting and whale watching Tropical. At this time of the year, they swim between the islands of La Gomera and Tenerife, and, as directed by the coach, turn over in a jump from the water, as if welcoming tourists.

Tenerife in May is the season of carnivals and festivals. The most grandiose of them is the day of the Canary Islands. For several days, various cultural events, unusual and colorful performances, concerts of folk groups and professionals are held.

The celebration ends with a three-hour fireworks show. Our travel agency Tez Tour offers an amazing and unforgettable trip to this resort paradise, where you and your whole family can have a great rest and gain strength for the whole year.

      May. Couple

      Spain, Tenerife island

Rested on Tenerife island in May 2014. We were afraid that it would be cold, and we would not be able to fully relax. But our fears were dispelled as soon as we got to Tenerife. It was hot summer warm weather, except in the evening it was cool, and we put on sweaters.

We stopped in the southern part of Tenerife, in the resort of Las Americas, the most popular and colorful resort. The volcano mountain protects this resort from winds and rains, so it is always warmer here than in the northern part of the island.

There are different beaches here. Near our hotel was a beach with white and black sand. We have seen almost white beaches and completely black volcanic sand. The beaches in Tenerife are works of art of nature itself, the locals are proud of them, and each of them has its own name. Merchants walk on the beach and sell fruits, but they are much more expensive, it is better to go to the store.

The resort of Las Americas has a very developed infrastructure, there are many boutiques, shops and entertainment centers. While shopping, my wife noticed that there were cheap cosmetics and perfumes. Naturally, we bought several pieces for my wife at once. The only nice thing is that in most boutiques you can bargain well.

From excursions we took a hike to the Teide volcano, to the water park and Loro park. In Loro Park, we watched several interesting shows and performances: parrot shows, tricks with trained dolphins, walruses, seals and hefty killer whales. We also visited the neighboring island called La Gomera, from which Christopher Columbus set off to discover America.

The rest turned out to be full and met all our expectations. We brought home a great mood and a bunch of photos!

      Spain, Tenerife island

Rested with my wife in Tenerife in May last year. We thought it would be very hot, but the climate turned out to be very mild and comfortable. For several days the water in the ocean was cold, due to the current, at that time we rented a car and went to explore the island on our own. Car rental cost us 50 euros per day, by the way the car was good, almost new. The roads are excellent, there are signs and markings everywhere, everything is clear, so when we rented a car, we didn’t even bother without a navigator.

We rested in the south of the island, but after traveling we liked the north more. There are fewer Russian and picturesque places. Were Loro Parque, loved it! Tourists who come here with a guide on an excursion run in a hurry to have time to see everything. We calmly watched all the animal shows, walked up, took a bunch of good photos. You can easily buy a ticket to the park at the entrance.

In the south of Tenerife, there are many restaurants, a pedestrian promenade where you can walk, sit, watch a stunning sunset.

Tenerife is a very romantic and peaceful resort. There is no rush and no fuss. We really enjoyed staying here.

      Mallorca or Tenerife — MILORCA

Good day to all, “Mallorca or Tenerife” – I will tell you today, I will share my experience so that it is easier to understand what to choose, Mallorca or Tenerife? Invaluable knowledge has been gained through extensive exploration of both resorts. To begin with, not for the sake of boasting, I will say that in my life, in addition to Spain, I managed to travel: Cancun, Punta Cana, Bali, Phuket, Vietnam, Germany, Austria, Italy – this is not a complete list of countries and cities in which we visited with dear husband. We have something to compare! I will generously share my knowledge.

So, on the agenda is Mallorca or Tenerife? Each of us is busy with our own worries and troubles – work, daily resolution of all sorts of problems, nervous breakdowns, studying, raising children and other daily activities take away strength. You don’t want to walk like a stretched string and get annoyed because of every trifle? I am sure that we all dream of being in harmony with ourselves, so a good and high-quality rest is necessary. Sometimes we drive ourselves into a corner so much that we don’t even know what we want from life, from vacation – even more so. It is clear that you need to escape from everyday life, change your place, go somewhere.

      Climate, weather, holiday season

Mallorca has a Mediterranean climate with a pronounced summer season. Tenerife is an island of eternal spring in the Atlantic Ocean, not far from the African coast.

Which is better, Mallorca or Tenerife ? The air temperature during the day on the coast of Mallorca is on average 21-24 degrees all year round. Above 30 rises in summer, from June to August. The best time for a beach holiday is the period from the second half of June to the first part of September – the sun is shining, there is practically no rain, the water is ideal for swimming (more on this later). The average annual daily temperature in Tenerife is about 18-20 degrees. The hottest months are July, August, when the thermometer rises to 26 degrees. There is no such heat as in Mallorca. In the evenings it can be cool, you should definitely grab a cardigan or a leather jacket with you.

Tenerife is a holiday destination all year round. The air temperature stays at 18 degrees all winter. Some tourists swim in the ocean. Mallorca is a little cooler in winter by a couple of degrees. At different times of the year, you can change the situation, swim, admire the beauties, deciding what to choose Mallorca or Tenerife .

I don’t really like extreme heat above 25 degrees, so I feel more comfortable in Tenerife, where the heat is not felt so much. Mallorca is not stuffy in early June. I think it’s the perfect time to visit.

Mallorca is an island in the Mediterranean Sea. The Canary Islands or Tenerife are located in the Atlantic Ocean. The ocean is a priori always colder than the sea, since the waters of the ocean warm up with a stretch. The water temperature in Tenerife from December to May averages 19 degrees, from June to August about 21-23 degrees, from September to November at 24 degrees. In principle, you can swim all year round. But not everyone likes cool water at 23 degrees in summer. For example, in Mallorca in the summer, in June the water is at 23 degrees, and in August it is all 27. You can swim in May, September and October in Mallorca.

      Beaches, nature

Mallorca or Tenerife are different in terms of beaches. In Mallorca, champagne-colored, creamy sand looks almost white in the sun. In Tenerife, the sand is of volcanic origin, which determines its color. The sand in Tenerife is dark, the color of asphalt, in some places dark yellow is found. Keep in mind that all light sand in Tenerife is imported.

Personally, for a long time, the presence of dark sand bothered me a little, so we flew anywhere, but not in Tenerife. As a result, interest overcame. What can be said? Dark sand is strange, unusual, but you quickly get used to it, it seems that it should be so.

The entrance to the water on beaches specially equipped for swimming is equally gentle. Anyone who swims poorly, in particular the kids in Mallorca and Tenerife will be safe.

Nature is beautiful in its own way on every island. Flora differs due to geographical location.

      Entertainment, excursions, attractions

Mallorca or Tenerife, where is the best ? Resting in the high season, there will definitely be no problems with entertainment anywhere. In the low season (especially November, December, January, February, March), some cafes and clubs close, there are not very many tourists, prices, by the way, in the low season for accommodation and meals are noticeably reduced. You can rent a car, get to know the island better.

Mallorca is probably more suitable for partying young people, there are a couple of areas rich in all sorts of clubs, you can visit new interesting places every day. Tenerife definitely loses in this regard, there are clubs there, of course, but their concentration is not as high as in Mallorca.

Mallorca is suitable for holidays at any age, teenagers, young couples, families with children, the elderly are great vacationers here. Depending on your preferences, you can choose the most suitable area. Tenerife, I would say, is more suitable for holidays 30+. Still, girlfriends at the age of about 23 will be bored here.

Both Mallorca and Tenerife have many beautiful sights. In Tenerife, you can highlight the Teide volcano, the Pueblo Chico miniature museum (all the sights of the island are collected, you can just decide on your plans, what you want to see), Loro Park (the largest exhibition of parrots in the world, a botanical garden, a zoo and a dolphinarium), Siam Water Parks Park and “Aqualand”, many observation platforms from where you can contemplate the beautiful views.

Mallorca has excellent landscapes in the Sierra de Tramontana (valleys, green hills, mountains, lakes), Valldemossa – an original town at the foot of the Sierra de Tramontana, the famous port capital of the Balearic Islands Palma de Mallorca or just Palma, Palm Cathedral on the seashore, Bellver Castle, Mondrago Nature Reserve with stunning beaches where pine trees grow, early 20th century train from Palma to Sawyer (opportunity to ride on the old railway. The train comes with stops in picturesque places – super excursion , great pastime). I have a separate review of the topic what to see in Mallorca.

      Let’s summarize

Where is it better to relax, Mallorca or Tenerife , no one will tell you exactly. 🙂 Both islands are good in their own way. The main difference between the islands is the location and climate. Tenerife is washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The ocean carries a special energy, power, when the wind blows from the ocean, you feel all this strength and greatness. Mallorca is washed by the Mediterranean Sea, any sea, I think, is inferior in energy to the ocean.

Where it’s warmer, Mallorca or Tenerife – the palm clearly belongs to Mallorca. In terms of prices, the level of hotels, food – everything is identical. Both islands belong to Spain, you need to get a visa, don’t forget. Fly to Mallorca about 4-4.5 hours, to Tenerife – 7-7.5 hours. By the way, I have an interesting article about 2 countries where you fly less than 4 hours and do not need a visa – this is Cyprus or Montenegro.

I can’t say where I liked it more, Mallorca or Tenerife . We have been to the islands at different times in our lives. I know for sure that my husband and I were very pleased with our travels. I can only say that we will return to both places more than once! Everything will depend on the mood!

Surely you will be interested to read, Cyprus or Crete, which is better than . As well as my holiday review, Cyprus or Montenegro .

Trust your intuition, choose what suits you best in terms of parameters and descriptions now. And… travel, travel, travel!

weather and holiday features. Holidays, entertainment

Spain is one of the best countries for recreation, and not only for a beach holiday, because the country is original and there are a lot of interesting and informative for tourists. A beach holiday in May is available only in sunny warm weather, but the May weather is ideal for exploring this wonderful country, because it is rainy in winter and hot in summer. You can visit Madrid and Barcelona or go to a seaside resort to visit a safari park or water park. In addition, nature wakes up and Spain in May is buried in the colors and aromas of jacaranda and bougainvillea. It is not for nothing that spring in the country is considered a wedding time, because here it is customary to decorate the bride’s wedding dress with fresh flowers.

      Weather in Spain in May

V of May Spain has a significant variation in climatic zones, so it will not be possible to unambiguously characterize the weather in the country. The climate here is called Mediterranean, but the country is located in the temperate-marine, continental, subtropical and tropical zones. The air temperature in May gradually rises from +16…+20°С at the beginning to +20…+25°С at the end of May. However, the nights here are still cold from +10°C to +15°C, so in addition to light clothing and sandals, you should take a sweater or jacket and closed shoes on a trip. But swimming in the sea in May is unlikely to succeed – the water temperature is about +18 … +19°C. Only in the Canaries the water is warmer, but the weather is cooler than in other resorts in Spain.

May is a very pleasant month in terms of the weather – it has stopped raining, it is warm, sunny, but there is no heat yet. However, May does not belong to the beach season, tourists mainly try to see the beautiful cities of the country and get acquainted with their sights. Most of all in May they visit Madrid (museums, architecture, matadors), Barcelona (Gothic and Gaudi), Seville (bullfighting and flamenco), Ibiza (club entertainment), and Tenerife (tropical beaches).

Weather in the regions of Spain

On the mainland it is warmest and sunniest in the south – in Andalusia . The Costa del Sol is already sunbathing, but the sea is still cold for swimming. In Malaga, Marbella and Valencia, it is about +24…+26°С, but at night it is quite cool +14…+15°С. Up to five days in May can be cloudy, but there is almost no rain. The highest temperature is observed in the capital of Andalusia – Seville up to + 26 … + 28 ° С, but there is no sea nearby.

Northeast is not as warm as the south, during the day +20°С at night +12°С. It still rains periodically – up to nine days a month. In the first half of May, ski slopes are officially closed in the mountains on glaciers. Snow falls from the slopes of the mountains, allowing you to hike and play golf (Sierra Nevada). For your information, the daytime temperature here is about +13°C, and at night it drops to +2°C.

The Balearic Islands will not delight you with swimming in the sea – the water temperature is not more than +18°С, the air temperature is +22…+24°С, showers can be up to seven times a month. Ibiza opens the party season in May, but Mallorca will be the most comfortable in May.

Canary Islands will delight you with a beach holiday in May. The most popular among the islands of “eternal spring” is Tenerife, especially among Russians. The average air temperature here is about +22°С, but can drop to +16…+18°С, and the water in the ocean is +22°С, due to the warm current. In the southern part of the island, the air warms up to +23…+27°С, precipitation can fall only in the north of the island. The climate of the Canary Islands depends on its proximity to Africa – 300 km, while mainland Spain is 700 km away.

      Spain in May: holiday features

So, a little about the features of holidays in Spain in May.

      Beach holidays

As such, there is no beach holiday in May yet, because you can still sunbathe under the warm May sun, even if there is no fresh breeze, but only a few swim.

Towards the end of May, the beach season opens on the Costa del Sol in Andalusia, the Costa Blanca in Valencia, the Costa Brava and the Costa Dorada in Catalonia. Costa is translated as “shore”, only the coasts differ in names: sunny (del Sol), white (Blanca), rocky (Brava) and golden (Dorada).

In the north-west of the country, the water temperature in the sea is generally +16°C, so here it is better not to plan a vacation on the beach before the end of June-beginning of July.

Resorts of the south-east are famous for steady winds, so windsurfers and kiters come here to relax.

All the beaches on the Spanish coast are landscaped, well maintained and equipped with everything necessary for a pleasant and safe holiday. In addition, the beaches are freely available, you do not need to pay an entrance fee. The blue flag season begins in Spain in mid-June – on the 15th, and until that time lifeguards and doctors, rentals and kiosks on the beaches do not always work.

      Tours and activities

In addition to the beach and the sea, you can actively go on excursions or travel on your own. Spain is rich in attractions that are interesting to see with the whole family. In Madrid, there are famous art galleries – Prado, Reina Sofia Art Center. Barcelona is famous for the creations of Gaudi – Park Güell, Casa Batlló, Sagrada Familia. There are many attractions in Valencia, the main of which is the City of Arts and Sciences. Football fans will be interested in visiting the museum of the Barcelona football club. The oceanographic park and science museum will attract both children and adults.

Sea resorts are also famous for their wonderful places. There are many different museums (turrons, shoes, sea and salt, microgiants) in the Costa Blanca. On the Rocky Coast, children will be happy to visit the Cat’s House and the Museum of Magic and Curiosities. The Salvador Dali Museums are located in Cadaqués and Figueres. In the Costa del Sol, it is worth visiting the Picasso Museum, which contains about 200 originals of the painter. Copies of the most beautiful buildings in Spain can be seen in Mallorca in the Spanish Village.

Spain in May is filled with the fragrance of flowering plants, so it is worth visiting the nearest national park, where the flora and fauna of the country are represented (Galicia – the park of the Atlantic Islands, in Cantabria – Picos de Europa, in Mallorca – Cabrera).

An excellent opportunity to improve your health and vitality is to visit the thermal springs of Archena, Caldes de Montbui and Panticos.

Each region of Spain is famous for its must-try dishes and fruits – nispero, peaches, apricots already ripen in May.

      Holidays and festivals

In Spain, May is rich in various holidays. On May 1, there are demonstrations, concerts and fireworks. May 2 is City Day in the Spanish capital, and on the 11th they glorify the patron saint of Madrid, Saint Isidore. In Girona, at this time, the Flower Festival takes place, and the Courtyard Competition takes place in Cordoba. Tenerife hosts a grand pyrotechnic show, and the Medieval Festival will welcome visitors to Ibiza. On May 30, autonomy is celebrated in the Canary Islands. May is the best time to watch bullfighting. Fighting takes place almost daily in Madrid.

In general, Spain in May will delight tourists with sunny days, warmth and bright colors of awakening nature, which is ideal for walking, relaxing on the beach and sightseeing.

Tenerife in May: tours, weather, water temperature

Tenerife in May: tours, weather, water temperature

Most people associate the Canary Islands with the sun, eternal summer and blissful nothingness. And it really is. Tenerife, the largest island in the archipelago, can rightfully be called a heavenly delight. In addition to magnificent beaches and the majestic ocean, it offers an extensive excursion program, many attractions and a huge variety of entertainment. When is the best time to travel? Of course, on the May holidays!

      Tenerife in May

The climate on the island is mild and suitable for everyone without exception. May is considered the beginning of the high season, because the long-awaited summer is coming. The temperature in the resorts of Playa de las Americas, El Medano, Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Cruz exceeds the 25 degree mark, and the water warms up to 23. Slight deviations from the norm are possible, but you should not expect much heat, as well as excessive coolness. However, the ocean is often not calm, so you should swim with great care. There is practically no precipitation during this period, and the winds, if they occur, are not cold, but pleasantly cool.

      What to do in May

Most tourists come here for the generous sun, beautiful tan and foamy ocean. Beach holidays are above all. The coasts are fully equipped for these purposes. The beaches are both pebbly and sandy. Moreover, the local sand is of volcanic origin, so it can be of different shades. For example, in Socorro, Playa Arena and Taganana, it is black. On Playa de las Teresitas and Playa del Duque – white. There are even beaches with sand specially brought from the Sahara.

There are many entertainments for every taste: boat trips and yacht trips, underwater fishing, diving and snorkelling. The southeastern neighborhoods are good for diving – Punta de la Rasca, Las Galletas, Playa Paraiso. Places nearby were also chosen by the conquerors of the waves.

Also on the island there are several water parks, a monkey farm, an ostrich and crocodile farm, a botanical garden and an amusement park.

      What to see

Tenerife is an island, although small, but with an interesting history. The capital of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is rich in sights. For example, the Holy Conquistador Cross is kept in the Iglesia de la Concepción Church, and the Masonic Temple is recognized as a national architectural monument. Plaza de España is especially beautiful in the evening, as it is equipped with original lighting.

San Cristobal de La Laguna – the second most important city, the cultural capital. Be sure to visit the Cathedral of Our Lady of Comfort, the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Siena, the Catholic Church of Iglesia de la Consensien, museums of science and space.

Natural attractions include the Teide volcano, listed by UNESCO as one of the highest peaks in the world. A highway has been laid to the top, and there is also a funicular, so everyone can get to the observation deck and enjoy the views of the island from a bird’s eye view. Nearby is the National Park of the same name, interesting with rocks of an unusual shape Los Roques de Garcia. The Teno Natural Park is famous for its endemic flora and fauna.

The underground landscape of the island is represented by caves, grottoes and galleries. One of these is the Wind Cave, formed 27 thousand years ago and recognized as the largest in Europe. The Masca and Infierno gorges are interesting. And in the northeast grows a seventeen-meter Dragon tree, whose age is more than five centuries. Today it is so revered that it flaunts on national banknotes and is considered a natural monument.

The city of Garachico is home to the natural tidal pools of El Caleton. But the most mysterious are the Guimar pyramids in the town of the same name. Who and when built them is a mystery over which more than one generation of scientists and researchers is struggling.

So Tenerife can rightly be called a mysterious and amazing island, which generously shares with its guests a piece of this very mystery and uniqueness.

What Convinced a New-to-Cruise Couple To Try Their First Voyage? In the End, It Came Down to the Butler.

For those of us who are experienced cruise travelers, it’s easy to know why this is such a special way to explore the world. And yet for those who have not cruised, it can be hard to understand the world you live in aboard a luxury ship. When we met Johannes (age 28) and Orkan (39) Baerenfaenger, they had just taken their maiden voyage, a 18-day South America honeymoon cruise from Guayaquil, Ecuador, to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., including Central America and the Caribbean as part of the itinerary.

The Baerenfaengers, who live outside Frankfurt in Germany’s Aschaffenburg, tell us they love good food, travel, spending time with friends–new and old–and sports. Actually, they don’t necessarily love the sports, but it means they don’t gain weight while traveling.

We loved hearing their stories about the experience and hope you will too.

It was your first cruise. Why did you decide on such a completely new experience for your honeymoon?

Johannes and Orkan Baerenfaenger took a chance on a cruise and fell in love all over again.

Orkan: Actually, it was the other way around: We first discovered and booked the cruise. Then, as we saw how incredibly luxurious the whole thing was, we thought about this being our honeymoon.

What eventually tipped you to book with Silversea?

Johannes: Silversea has an international crowd onboard. You meet people from the U.K., the U.S., Canada, Europe–basically from all over the world. This said, you meet so many interesting people and make new friendships with people from around the globe. And then, the route excited us. Other cruise lines offer the more interesting routes usually on expeditions but not on classic cruise ships. Silversea’s classic ships were a bit more appealing to me compared to others. I found the style more beautiful, more subtle, instead of that instead of that “bam-in-your-face” style of luxury.

Orkan: A bit of an understatement!

“Neeraj, our butler on Silversea’s Silver Moon, was like a genie in a bottle, fulfilling wishes before you even noticed you had them.”

What made you decide to choose a cruise in the first place?

With a Little Help from my Friends: Silversea Guests Come Together to Support Crew

    by Jorge Oliver

Orkan: I was basically against cruises before because of the big cruise ships carrying thousands of people. But then I saw Silversea. At that time (during the pandemic) we were looking at Silver Shadow from Mumbai to Singapore, which later we had to rebook. I’m a quality engineer by profession, a test manager, and I have a special eye for detail. First, I watched videos from YouTube, many of them terrible, because they were forever filming their cabin, opening every single drawer and so on. I’m interested in other aspects. But that was still a good start, and I then realized that the values this cruise line emphasizes are completely different.

Johannes: Initially, I perhaps was not completely committed to the idea of cruising yet. With the help of Silversea’s sales representative–by Silversea’s sales representative, Jack Sockette, Silversea’s sales representative, the Silversea Passengers group on Facebook, and ultimately YouTube–I was enticed to try a cruise.

How did you research the trip?

Orkan: We really researched online for a long time, mainly on YouTube, especially: “What is included with the fares you pay on different cruise lines?’ Before this cruise, we had already tried out various luxury hotels. We don’t want to focus our vacation on “bling-bling luxury,” with a lot of gold and so on, but we do attach great importance to good service.

Johannes: We initially had a few cruise lines on our short list. One, for example, has somewhat bigger ships, and the inclusive services were described in the most complicated way, depending on the cabin category. But I actually want to make a trip where I book and then everything just fits. So the concept of Silversea has convinced us: You go on board and don’t have to worry about anything. Everything is included. Well, except for the spa.

Planning the trip was not easy because of the pandemic. What was your experience like?

Johannes: At the very beginning, we just sent a request via the form on the Silversea website, writing that we were interested in a cruise. Eventually how we were dealt with by Silversea’s internal agents after this request strongly influenced our decision to book the cruise. It was a very personal service, no matter how many questions we asked. We always had the feeling that we were really treated like a customer and not like a supplicant. Above all, Jack Sockett, our agent also went far beyond just the booking process. He recommended excursions for each of the ports. He was more of a travel consultant, actually.

And then came the pandemic-related changes …

Johannes: I had became aware relatively early on that the Asia cruise we originally had booked probably would be canceled. I proactively contacted Silversea, and we were easily able to rebook with all our options even before the official cancellation. Then we were told that the Caribbean itineraries would definitely take place….

Orkan: But we had spent time in the Caribbean and wanted to see something we didn’t know yet.

Johannes: And there was Silver Moon in South America. For this trip we also recognized that it offered the S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) program, which we found interesting, because it incorporated food from the regions we visited in South America. And we were interested in the countries: Panama, Mexico, Guatemala. There was really something new to discover.

Orkan: Also, we are real foodies. Food is very, very important to us. On Silver Moon, S.A.L.T. Kitchen was totally fascinating because the menu changed every one of our 16 days to reflect both the region and also the individual ports we visited.

The feeling onboard is quite different among the various luxury and ultra-luxury cruise lines on the market.

What was important to you about that ambiance?

Johannes: It’s interesting what brand preferences we both have for hotels. Orkan likes a chain with a more casual ambience, like W Hotels. I prefer hotels like the St. Regis that are a bit more traditional. Silversea turned out to be a good combination of the two: Casual and easygoing but with service just perfect. You have a butler; he does everything for you. And if something needs tweaking, staff and crew respond in a very professional way.

You had some doubts about the dress code, didn’t you?

Johannes and Orkan Baerenfaenger with their butler, Neeraj, on Silversea Cruises’ Silver Moon

Orkan: Yes, I actually worried a bit about the dress code before we booked. By profession, we’re both management consultants, so we know what it’s like to wear a suit and tie when with clients. On vacation with a dress code? And in addition, switching between formal, informal and casual? It seemed confusing and you’d need an extra suitcase for your suits and shirts, I thought.

That slowed me down a bit in my euphoria. In the Silversea Passengers’ Group on Facebook, however, I had some chats with people who had always booked on the line, and they ultimately convinced me. They described in detail the feeling there was when everyone was dressed up, shared wonderful photos from elegant evenings on board. Even if I had minor reservations, I wanted to give it a go. It was just one extra suitcase to pack.

How did the dress code feel once you were on board?

Orkan: When I was on board and experienced what it’s like when everyone is dressed up formally or even informally – that really is an appealing ambience.

Johannes: It just raises the level again.

Orkan: Yes, definitely. You automatically behave differently, for instance, on formal nights, and I liked that, too.

Did you look into the other aspects of the Silversea experience before your cruise?

Orkan: What appealed to me me before booking was that while Silversea is not explicitly adult-only, there was no specific focus on families with young children.

Johannes: We definitely appreciated that it was not a cruise with an emphasis on water slides and so on. The focus is on good food, entertainment for adults, with bars and good cocktails. And there certainly were plenty of activities. We loved the cocktail workshop and wine and Champagne tastings. The S.A.L.T. Lab cooking classes were fun.

As a gay couple, did you worry about tolerance issues?

Orkan: That is important for us, of course. We asked this question in the Silversea Passengers’ Facebook group, having in our minds that there might be some hate or negativity. But we were very positively surprised. Quite a few people contacted us who are also traveling as two men or two women and who have always booked with this cruise line. We never had the feeling that we were ‘different’.

Nowadays you assume this, but, in fact, it still is just not the case everywhere.

What was the most surprising or unexpected thing on board and on your cruise?

Orkan: Before and even after booking, I asked myself the question: What do I actually need a butler for? Well, he simply worked in our suite. For example, our sunglasses were always polished and so on. My personal highlight and a nice surprise was breakfast on the balcony. Not only that, like in any hotel, someone brings a cart with your breakfast items to your room, and that’s it. Our butler also completely set up the table on the balcony. And if we forgot to pick out breakfast the night before, he just brought us something because he knew what we liked. That really was that icing on the cake.

Johannes: What was most surprising to me is that there is no such word as ‘no’ to the customer on board Silversea. No one tells you ‘no.’ They might say ‘we can’t do that today, but we’ll get it done tomorrow.’ Really, you get anything you ask for, as long as it’s reasonable, or course. For example, by default there was only one rosé wine offered for lunch and dinner, and Orkan loves to drink rosé wines. So they came up with two more. No matter what you asked for, they always tried everything to make it happen as quickly as possible.

And what really pleased me is that the first person we met on board was a German, Assistant Cruise Director Verena from Munich, who became a friend. Now in August we will meet her in Germany.

How would you classify the cruise in terms of experience level compared to a luxury vacation on land?

Orkan: Maybe it’s the butler, but Silversea really is at a different level of service.

Johannes: For me the most important difference is that you see much more. Our Thailand on-land vacation was 14 days in a really nice hotel. We did excursions, but somehow we got bored after six days. Onboard Silver Moon, we were never bored, not even on sea days, because there was always something going on. There was always something to do or meet other people. We even threw a party in our suite. And,of course, the shore excursions, always in a different country–that’s the core benefit of a cruise.

Johannes: I think you can get more luxury for the same money on the ship than you can on land. Of course, compared to a luxury hotel, Silversea is much more expensive at first. But when including all the meals, the drinks, the excursions that I have to book extra at a luxury hotel, it’s better value for money on the ship.

What were your best moments on board?

Orkan: What fascinated us very much is that we cruised as a couple, for our honeymoon and wound up making so many new friends onboard.

Johannes: And yet, before we even got onboard we’d already met a lot of people on the Facebook’s Silversea Passengers. Then we met the first of them in person at the airport during a stopover in Amsterdam. This cohesion among fellow travelers is quite nice.

Orkan: For me, the nicest thing was to open the curtain every morning, go out onto the balcony and to see where we are today. I shared pictures of that on Instagram and people would go nuts for it. Once, in the morning just in the wilderness, I saw, from our balcony, dolphins jumping–without actively going on a special boat tour for dolphin watching! It was just happening right there.

Barcelona is a cosmopolitan masterpiece. With a history rich in art and architecture, medieval, Gothic, and modern influences can be seen all over the city. You can marvel at Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia or stroll up the shady, tree-lined Las Ramblas boulevard and discover some of the city’s best shopping and bustling cafes.

Málaga is like a beautiful work of art. And it’s no wonder considering, considering it was the birthplace of Picasso. You’ll find a museum commemorating his birth here, which is a must-visit destination for art fans. Elsewhere, be sure to spend some time in the city’s Alcazaba, a 11th-century citadel that is home to three palaces, beautiful gardens, and opulent fountains.

In Cadiz, cobblestone streets lead into café-filled squares, where you can sip while appreciating the Moorish architecture. Or visit Seville, where the locals are devoted to bullfighting, flamenco, and fiesta. The city also has a rich history evident in its old quarters and landmarks – an immense lavishly ornamented cathedral, and the Alcazar palace, exquisitely decorated in Moorish style.

Casablanca is a port city and commercial hub in western Morocco, fronting the Atlantic Ocean. The city’s French colonial legacy is seen in its downtown Mauresque architecture, a blend of Moorish style and European art deco. Standing partly over the water, the enormous Hassan II Mosque, completed in 1993, has a 210m minaret topped with lasers directed toward Mecca.

Marvel at the stunning mix of innovative architecture and gothic beauty when you visit Valencia. This Spanish city is home to many avant-garde buildings, including the breathtaking City of Arts and Sciences cultural complex. Elsewhere, palaces and mansions constructed in the 15th century dot the cityscape, while The Silk Exchange resembles a medieval fortress housing many mysterious carvings.

Whether you book a stateroom or a suite, you’ll love the polished style and service of your own private retreat. In particular, you’ll appreciate the finer touches, like Egyptian cotton bed linen with duvet, Terry bathrobes and slippers, fine toiletries and perfumed room sprays.

The cost of the cabin includes all main dining meals with basic drinks such as water, coffee and tea. You also have access to all seminars, events, parties and entertainment. There will be an additional fee added to your invoice which covers the port charges, government taxes, basic gratuities, admin fees and security fees. These fees will be as follows:

    Cabin Type

Do you prefer a cabin with or without a window? Cabins without a window are normally located on the inside corridor of the ship. There are also balcony rooms and suites. Balcony rooms come with an outside patio area where the scenery can be enjoyed without leaving quarters. Suites include a sleeping and dining area with additional amenities. ** If someone in your party is prone to sea sickness, choose a cabin that is in a lower level and in the middle of the ship.

    Cabin Size

Having comfortable surroundings is important when going on a week-long cruise. Will you be spending a lot of time in the cabin? Do you want to wake up and drink coffee on the balcony? A small cabin with no window isn’t a good fit for passengers that are claustrophobic. Make sure to determine your needs ahead of time and book a cabin size accordingly.

    Amenities

Cabins and suites offer a wide range of amenities from Concierge services, to menu upgrades and spa access, to wet bars and butlers in the suite class. Determine which perks will make your vacation complete before finalizing a cabin.

Relationship Killers, Part 5: Love is a Journey, not a Destination

Often, when people get married they feel like they’ve arrived at their life’s destination. Now they are settled. They know what to expect from now on.

But is that really so? Do you know what to expect once you’ve found your partner? And do you know the way forward?

Let’s have Alice and Phil share their story and experiences.

    Alice and Phil Meet–Again

When Alice and Phil got married in the church both had attended since childhood, they felt like the marriage was the final destination of a long journey.   Although they had known each other since childhood, it was only in the last few years that they even had considered each other as possible romantic partners.

They became involved almost as a fluke when a friend of Alice’s set up a blind date, not realizing that Alice and Phil already knew each other.  And in fact, they had spent virtually no time together, so the friend could be excused for thinking that they were strangers to each other.

The first date had been nothing special, especially when Phil committed a faux pas and criticized a local retail store, not realizing that Alice’s father worked there.  But it was uphill after that, and Alice and Phil decided to tie the knot.

The Destination: Alice and Phil Get Married

Alice and Phil got married at a particularly busy time in both their lives.  Alice was starting a master’s program in philosophy and Phil was starting a new entry-level management job in the same city.  Both of them wanted to make a good impression in their new professional lives and they realized that their jobs would consume a lot of their time.

But they were not worried.  On the contrary, they were glad that they had decided to consummate the marriage so that the marriage box was checked off and they could move on to the new challenges confronting them in their lives.

For sure, they thought, neither of them would have had time to plan a wedding when they were just starting new professional challenges. Alice had thoughts that, if she performed really well in the master’s program, she might be admitted to a doctoral program.

And Phil had the idea that, with some serious effort, he might make it into mid-level management in two or three years.  For sure, he had no desire to spend the rest of his life as a front-line manager.

    Alice and Phil Are Married

In the early years of the marriage, Phil and Alice indeed were very busy.  The master’s program opened up a whole new world that Alice had not even known existed.

For the first time in her life, Alice actually found herself excited about her studies.   She also met other people much like herself, including men.

Phil was anything but a “student type,” and Alice found herself sometimes bored with him.  She could not have a serious philosophical discussion with him about anything. He seemed to be in the process of becoming a “company man”—very concrete, down-to-earth, but also, pedestrian.

Phil was also having his challenges with Alice.  He could not understand how she was becoming what seemed to him, in a word, “flaky.”  She had seemed down-to-earth when they courted, but increasingly, she wanted to talk about high-falutin’ philosophical issues (like–are people basically good or evil?  Why do good people allow themselves to do bad things?).

All that was nice, but Phil could not see how it was ever going to put food on the table, allow them to buy a second car, or pay for their kids’ college when they had kids.

Alice and Phil are in Trouble

Phil and Alice were having problems.  But they did not talk about them much because both of them were afraid, whether or not they would admit it, that talking would only make things worse.

Moreover, they had arrived at their destination when they married.  What really was there to talk about?  One thing would have been that they were growing apart.

Meanwhile, Phil met a woman at work, Alexandra, who really appealed to him.  She was beautiful, sexy, and totally down-to-earth.  She knew where the bread was buttered.  No discussions of the meaning of life for her.  She was also a first-line manager, and a discussion for her was how to increase productivity of the workers so as to increase the profitability of staff—and maybe also to get herself a promotion.

What’s Wrong with Viewing Marriage as the Destination?

Phil’s and Alice’s problems were not particularly unusual.  Couples often grow apart in relationships.

What was particularly unfortunate was that they, as so many couples, looked at their marriage as a final destination rather than as, metaphorically, the start of a new voyage.

Their goal had been to get married. They got married. They were where they wanted to be—or so they thought.

Because they had already gotten to where they wanted to go, they did not see the need for serious further work on the relationship.

Marriage is not a destination – it’s the beginning of a new voyage

Marriage is not really a destination: It is the beginning of a new journey.

When you view it as a destination, as one other life goal checked off, you risk failing to realize that the marriage will succeed only if you continue to work on your relationship after the marriage at least as hard as you did before the marriage.

Indeed, you may have to work even harder on it because living together in marriage inevitably poses many new and totally unexpected challenges, many of which cannot be well predicted in advance.

If Love is a Journey, How Do You Approach the New Voyage?

Some people view love through the lens of a travel story.  In the travel story, two partners are traveling together on a journey through their lives and they try, as best they can, to stay on the same path.  They view love as a journey.

Whether or not this story matches your own story or not, you need to view love always as unfinished.

The love-match theory states that the mixture of intimacy, passion, and commitment in a relationship is fluid and dynamic, not congealed and static.  Love constantly changes, often without our even being aware of it. Love is a journey because there are these frequent changes, whether we want them or not.

There are always challenges, whether of the “Alexandra” type, as mentioned above, or some other.  Because Alice and Phil believe they have “arrived,” they no longer see themselves as being on a voyage and so do not adequately prepare for or even try to solve new problems in their relationship as they arise.

There is a way to address Alice and Phil’s problem, although it may or may not solve their problem.

    • They need to communicate more;
    • they need to work on their problems;
    • they need to seek mutual understanding; and most of all,
    • they need to view their relationship, like all relationships, as constantly in flux.

You need to do the same. You need to be vigilant about the state of your relationship.

When there are challenges, as there always are, don’t sweep them under the rug; don’t expect them to solve themselves; don’t look at yourself as set for life because you are married or have what you view as a permanent living arrangement.

You’re together now?  Congratulations.  Love is a journey, not a destination.  Your journey has just begun and will not end until you die!  And after that, who knows?
