ALEXANDRIA, VA — Santa Claus will be back in Alexandria this holiday season after a couple of years of COVID-19 restrictions that made it difficult for kids to crawl up on his lap and make their case that they’ve been good boys and girls over the last year.
Visits and pictures with Santa are at the heart of many families’ holiday traditions, but the coronavirus pandemic gave them a lump of coal. Malls and other places took social distancing measures in both 2020 and 2021 to help contain the spread of the virus, moving Santa meet-ups largely online.
Virtual visits are still an option in some places, but there’s nothing quite like seeing jolly old St. Nick live and in person. In and around Alexandria, kids have several chances:

Santa Susanna is a great place to stay, located on the western coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Spanish Catalonia. This resort town near Barcelona today has just over 3,000 inhabitants. nine0006
Beaches
This resort is famous for its wonderful beaches that stretch for several kilometers along the Mediterranean coast. There are three separate beaches: Levante, Caletes and Dunes. The width of the beach strip is on average about 40 meters.
It is great to develop active sports recreation here, vacationers enjoy playing beach volleyball, traveling along the coast on boats, boats, water bikes and skis, having fun on bananas. All beaches have Blue Flags. nine0006
There is soft sand and clear water. You can swim on the beaches from May to October, at the peak of the season there are a lot of tourists. There are showers, sun loungers, umbrellas, etc. This is a wonderful natural landmark of Santa Susanna.
Activ Natura
This is the most popular local park where you can spend the whole day wandering between the trees and enjoying nature. If you get bored just watching the beauties, you can safely move on to active and even extreme types of outdoor recreation. nine0006
Tourists can choose to tour the park on quad bikes, go to the shooting range to shoot archery, ride horses in the park (it will be more convenient for children to ride a pony), climb rope structures among the trees.
Adventure Park
Before us is another natural attraction of Santa Susanna, where you can do active sports and just have fun. A wonderful place where tourists and citizens come with their families, with children and walk in the fresh air. nine0006
The territory of the park is divided into zones belonging to different countries. You can go to a 19th century saloon in the USA, ride an old train through the deserts of Mexico, visit China of the Middle Ages, slide down the highest roller coaster. Children will be delighted.
Old Town
This is the most favorite place for tourists to walk and the best historical and cultural attraction of Santa Susanna. The history of the city began during the Early Middle Ages, fortifications, watchtowers and markets testify to this. nine0006
It will be interesting to walk along the local cobbled roads and narrow streets, to see three large towers, from which in the old days the townspeople watched the approach of Spanish or French troops, or pirates, who often plundered the Mediterranean towns.
Caen Rates Castle
This castle was built during the Mature Middle Ages, it has been reconstructed and restored several times, so it has survived to this day in good condition. Today, the castle houses the city’s cultural center. nine0006
At first, a watchtower stood in its place, thanks to which the inhabitants of Santa Susanna protected their city from pirate attacks from the sea. This was a problem in Europe until the 18th century. Then the tower was bought by Baron Rates, who built his castle around it.
Currently, the castle hosts holidays, festivals, it is considered one of the most important attractions of Santa Susanna. You can see and recognize the castle from afar, thanks to the huge ancient cylindrical tower. nine0006
Promenade
As in other resort towns, the promenade of Santa Susanna is a center of entertainment for citizens and tourists. In the evenings, the entire city society gathers here to make promenades, communicate with their old and new friends and acquaintances.
Around the Santa Susanna embankment there are cafes, restaurants, discos, clubs, there is everything to have a fun evening, participate in parties, drink some alcohol. Life in the Mediterranean towns rages on the waterfront or in the port. nine0006
City Church
This church was built by the people of Santa Susanna in the 1940s to celebrate the end of the Spanish Civil War and is the religious center of the city. The greatest value in the church is the gilded altar.
On it, a local artist depicted Saint Susanna, the patroness of the city, entering paradise. This is a functioning Catholic church, where believers come every day, as well as tourists who are just interested in seeing this religious building. nine0006
Chapel of Santa Susanna
Next to the town church is the chapel of Saint Susanna, after which the town was named. The chapel and the church make up a single architectural complex, although they were built by the inhabitants of the city at different times from local stone.
Both religious buildings are not of great architectural value, but they are extremely important for the residents of Santa Susanna, who cherish the church along with the chapel, periodically carry out their restoration on their own. nine0006
Font del Boter Natural Park
This is a nature reserve where there is a thermal spring with mineral water called Boter. Roman or Turkish baths were not built here. It is allowed to go to the source and drink mineral water on your own initiative or as prescribed by a doctor.
Here you can walk all day long, admiring the surrounding nature, wonderful exotic flowers, shrubs and trees, as well as doing sports, cycling along the paths, relaxing near the thermal spring, etc.
Crafts Market
This Santa Susanna market is especially popular during the high season when many tourists come to the city. Here you can find souvenirs made by local craftsmen, they will stay with you or your friends for a long memory of Spain.
Natural cosmetics, women’s jewelry in the Catalan and Spanish style, stylish European clothes and shoes, antique furniture are widely presented here. In the craft market, you can buy things with a real Spanish flavor, this is its value. nine0006
Video tour of Santa Susanna
If the sights of Santa Susanna get bored and seem too provincial to you, feel free to go to Barcelona. This magnificent city is filled to the brim with unique cultural and historical monuments.
In Barcelona you will see the great creations of Antoni Gaudí: Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and several houses built according to the master’s designs (Balló, Mila, etc.), then walk through the Spanish Village and the Gothic Quarter.
This is the main tourist centre of the north of the Island, situated on the coast of the Orotava valley, at the foot of Mount Teide. It enjoys a mild climate throughout the year. It was the pioneer of the tourist industry, and the oldest holiday resort in the Canary Islands, being declared “of Tourist Interest” in 1955. It is a cosmopolitan town with splendid sea-side facilities like the Costa de Martiánez complex of swimming pools, with its enormous artificial lake and where the luxurious Puerto de la Cruz Casino is located . This was the work of Cesar Manrique, an internationally famous artist from Lanzarote.
Modern, top class hotels equipped with all the comforts you could want, and a large selection of self-catering accommodation, where you can find typical international restaurants that specialise in regional cuisine, night-clubs, cafes and all kinds of entertainment.
Puerto de la Cruz, colourful and picturesque, is unusually attractive, with spots like San Telmo, Plaza del Charco, the fishing docks and the whole La Ranilla district, San Amaro and La Paz, the Taoro Park and the Botanical Gardens, created in 1788, that has a collection of plants and trees from the five continents. There are several churches worth visiting, like the church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia, the Castle of San Felipe and the Customs House. The town has libraries, convention center, theatre, post office, sports centre, Olympic swimming pool, a large number of tennis courts and gymnasiums. There are also facilities for a wide range of water sports.
Puerto de la Cruz is the starting point for excursions to the rest of the Island with travel agencies, taxis or hire cars.
TF-312 via El Botánico and via Las Arenas is the road link to the Northern Motorway TF-5.
The town is also the starting point and destination of many different bus routes that link it with the rest of the Island and Santa Cruz, 37 kilometres away.
The most famous festivities are the Carnival fiestas, in winter, and the Fiestas of the Patron Saint, in July.
Loro Parque is a genuine twelve hectare paradise housing the largest parrot collection in the world.
Loro Parque also has the largest dophinarium in Europe, an orchid house, an African market, tiger island, lorovision, etc. The facilities have recently been extended to include a new show, Orca Ocean, a sea-lion show, a Thai village, a subterranean aquarium with a submarine tunnel, a shark pool, gorillas, water falls, etc.
Puerto de la Cruz also has one of the most prestigious casinos in Spain, the Puerto de la Cruz Casino, set in the Martianez complex. From the Taoro park, you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the town and of the Orotava Valley.
There are different religious services every Sunday; times are announced on church doors.
A kilometre of coastline has recently been regenerated, from Castle San Felipe to Punta Brava. Some 200,000 cubic metres of volcanic sand from the sea bed nearby have been used for this. The beach is called Playa Jardin and includes 17,000 square metres of gardens. The project was designed by the brilliant artist from Lanzarote, Cesar Manrique.

Puerta La Cruz (PLC) Conservation Camp inmates make rain sticks and design plaques, clocks and wooden signs in hobby craft.
Community Service Projects
PLC Conservation Camp crews, supervised by CAL FIRE staff, provide extensive conservation and project work in the Anza Borrego Desert State Park, Palomar County Park, Cal Trans, City of San Diego, City of Poway, La Jolla Indian Reservation, Naval Training base SERE, San Diego University, United States Forest Service, Warner Springs School District, and San Diego Wild Animal Park. These are just a few of the on-going projects that PLC is involved with, as well as fire defense year around and sand bagging at local fire stations in the San Diego County during the wet season to help prevent flood damage.
Camp History
PLC Conservation Camp #14 began operations in 1957 with male inmates, CDCR staff, and CAL FIRE employees. The camp was converted in May of 1986 to an all-female inmate camp. The camp remained under administrative supervision of the Sierra Conservation Center (SCC) until October 2005, when the California Institution for Women (CIW) took over the operation of Puerta La Cruz, Rainbow, and the Malibu Conservation Camps.
The primary mission of the camp is to provide incarcerated fire crews for fire suppression principally in San Diego, Imperial and Riverside Counties, but has been assigned to numerous off-reservation assignments throughout the state. In addition to fire suppression, incarcerated hand crews provide a work force for conservation projects and community service.
A Mobile Kitchen Unit (MKU) with inmate cooks and support workers is supervised by both CDCR and CAL FIRE staff is also a part of PLC Camp. The MKU provides meals to the firefighters at an incident base camp in remote locations. CIW inmates also assist by providing workers under the supervision of CDCR Fire Captains.
Inmate Programs
During their leisure time, inmates may participate in hobby craft, softball, basketball, horseshoes, reading or other activities. Spiritual and self-help services such as Catholic Services, Calvary Chapel, Jewish Services, West Angeles Church, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are provided by community volunteers. Puerta La Cruz also facilitates GED preparation, college courses facilitated by Palo Verde College, and pre-release classes. Inmates quickly learn that life at a conservation camp is more desirable than serving time at a prison. Their work activities and efforts during emergencies build a strong work ethic, and a feeling of self-worth. These activities prepare the inmates for a successful integration back into their communities upon release.

Breakfast was excellent, but we were spoiled. Dinner was so cheap you can’t complain, it was good, maybe very, but not fancy, and there’s also a nice pool, but be aware you’re on the north coast. It is much colder and overcast here than in the more touristic but more deserted southern region. If you want the sun, you need to drive through the clouds and then you will be above the clouds! at this altitude of 2000/2500 meters it only takes 10 minutes on each side to get a good tan 🙂 just put a towel in the desert, it’s very sunny there but fresh because of the altitude, 6 degrees for every 1000 meters as far as i remember from schools. It is also very quiet there, since you are in one large crater (caldera),

Excellent
Quiet location on a hill above the city, beautiful garden overlooking the Teide (if you have the right room). The architecture is from the 70s or 80s but the hotel has been very well updated in recent years. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The food is quite tasty and the service is very friendly and personal. The garden and pool are impeccably maintained. Great for babies/young kids as the balcony and room are safe enough, there are baby cots and seats in the restaurant and the waiting staff is great for kids.
The beds are comfortable but we had 2 single beds pushed together rather than one king size bed – not ideal for couples. The bathroom is clean but not perfectly refurbished, the tub is old, the sink is very low and the floor is not what I expect from a four star hotel. Given that the tap water is not drinkable, I would have expected free water to be served during dinner.

Cave history
History books might show Colorado’s own Cave of the Winds as being discovered in 1881, but the caves are actually millions of years old! As early legends of over a thousand years ago tell, the Jicarilla Apaches told of a cave near Manitou Springs where the Great Spirit of the Wind resided.
When two brothers named George and John Pickett went exploring for new caves in the Williams Canyon area, they discovered what we now know as Cave of the Winds.
As they approached the mouth of the limestone entrance, legend has it that their candles flickered mysteriously in the wind blowing from a nearby crevice. This signaled them to explore further, and when they crawled through the limestone archway, they discovered a large chamber unlike anything ever seen before. This discovery promised the Pickett brothers an amazing and dramatic new underground world to explore, unlike anything ever experienced!

“Great Activity for the Family!”
This was so fun! We did the cave tour and the wind walker/zip line attraction. Our tour guide was fun and informative, and seeing the inside of a cave was a cool experience!
– Joanne A., Maine – Tripadvisor.com
What should I wear/bring on my tour?
Discovery Tour: Wear comfortable clothing: jeans, shorts, or even a comfortable skirt will do. Make sure your shoes have good traction – sneakers or hiking boots are ideal. Bring a light jacket – even in the heat of a Colorado summer, the temperature in these Colorado caves is a pleasant 54 degrees.

Pets are not allowed in Cave of the Winds Mountain Park.
Is the cave wheelchair-accessible?
The cave itself is not wheelchair-accessible because of its narrow passageways and stairs. Review of Cueva del Viento
Reviewed July 29, 2013
Highly recommended visit. It is possible with children from 5 years old. The caves are formed by flowing molten lava. The tunnels are huge and very long. At the same time, they overlap each other and connect in some places. For general excursions, a piece about 500-700 meters long is reserved. Everything is marked and prepared for a safe stay. For more sporty – there are trips to more remote corners. I would especially like to note the work of the Cueva del Viento employees. They are true professionals who love what they do. Our guide was Dragan from Serbia. Professional cave explorer, speleologist, volcanologist. I highly recommend going to him. Excellent English, German, not bad in Russian. He is very attentive to children and is happy to share his amazing knowledge about caves, volcanoes and everything that will interest you during the trip. You learn so many interesting and new things in 2-3 hours of traveling underground that it is difficult to put everything in your head. The cost is ridiculous – 10 euros for an adult and 5 euros for a child. And impressions are for life. There are restrictions: shoes such as sneakers are required. Flip-flops – no, sandals, too. Believe me, shoes are very important, because the surface of the solidified lava is prickly to the point of horror. Millions of spikes and you have to walk on them. Pants are required. A jacket is desirable – it can be cool and even windy downstairs! The tunnels have entrances and exits at different heights (after all, these are traces of lava flowing down), so a strong draft of air is created – hence the name of the Cave of the Wind. Children will have the opportunity to climb through narrow tunnels (I’ll say right away that everything is thought out and safe – where it’s dangerous – the entrances are walled up or locked). There are some exciting moments – for example, everyone turns off the lights on their helmets and enjoys 100% darkness. That you have not seen – believe me. In general, the impressions are extremely positive. We wholeheartedly recommend visiting. http://www.cuevadelviento.net/inicio.php?ix=2&pg=1&id=eng

Cave of the Wind, Tuscany – Garfagnana
Grotta del Vento – Cave of the Wind, one of the largest and most important caves in Europe. The cave owes its name to a strong wind that creates a draft at the main entrance (about 40 mph).
The cave was discovered not so long ago: the entrance to it was very tiny and no one dared to explore it, but food was cooled in this small “hole” in the summer – the temperature in the cave is always stable, 10.7 degrees Celsius. Finally, a group of researchers persuaded a four-year-old girl, Bertha, to climb into a tiny hole, and she confirmed the presence inside the gallery. So the entrance was slightly expanded and the first 30 meters of the cave were explored, but due to the imperfection of technology, they stopped for many years, until at 19In 29, a group of scientists did not take up the cave, having explored 60 meters of the cave. They ran into the lake and decided that the cave was over,
, and only a severe drought in 1961 made it possible to discover another 600 meters of the cave behind the underwater lake, which attracted scientists from all over the world. Further research expanded the cave to 4500 meters, its end rests on an underwater river and, judging by the significant increase in the volume of water that comes out of the cave, there are many more amazing tunnels and underwater oschers after the river. But the exploration cannot be continued, because the more the path beyond the river is excavated, the more water and pebbles arrive, and the more the dug tunnel becomes clogged. So, while the cave has been explored for 4.5 kilometers. nine0003
The whole area can be explored by tourists. There are three routes in the cave: one hour, two and three hours (easy to remember).
The first route leads to a gallery with a lake and beautiful stalactites and stalagmites (limestone formations): mountain above the cave, above the visitors is 200 meters of stone. The route rests on the river, after which there is no way forward. nine0003
The third route is complemented by a vertical climb to a stone 80 meters high.
The cave is known for its experiments, it houses the so-called Hall of Voices. where cavers and scientists had collective auditory hallucinations: they heard the voices of friends and unfamiliar voices whispering words and phrases. As an experiment, the whisper was recorded on a dictaphone and at the same time – by hand, in order to compare what was heard on the surface. But not a single record revealed a whisper, because the phenomenon is considered to be a hallucination. nine0003
Another study in the cave was conducted by NASA to observe human behavior in an isolated enclosed space (which is also a space rocket). “Speleonauts” were placed in a cave for months and watched their reaction. During the experiment, it turned out that a day in a closed, sunless space from 24 hours becomes 48 hours for a person, because of this, he begins to eat and sleep twice as rarely, and this leads to his exhaustion.

Guide To Playa Blanca Resort In Lanzarote & It’s Attractions
The beautiful holiday resort of Playa Blanca lies in Lanzarote. The most northern of the Canary Islands of Spain. This area is actually one of the newest resorts of the island which has grown in popularity over the previous decade.
Part of the Municipality of Yaiza, Playa Blanca is the southernmost town in Lanzarote. This destination is some 45 km from Arrecife Airport. Extensive development has raised the profile of this once tiny fishing village. Many are now heading here to enjoy the fantastic climate and beautiful beaches.
Playa Blanca is not as lively as the resorts of Puerto del Carmen or Costa Teguise. This resort is more sophisticated and ideal for a relaxing holiday.
Marina Rubicon
A factor for the recent development and success of this resort is it’s closeness to Fuerteventura. A short 30 minute ferry journey from the port here will allow a visit to this other beautiful island.
The picturesque Marina Rubicon is a short 15 walk from the town. Here you can enjoy the restaurants and shops in the village. The marina offers a wide range of water activities such as sailing and diving.
Playa Blanca Beaches
Playa Blanca or “White Beach” is not only the resort name but also the name of one of the 3 main beaches here. The whole area is actually a large bay split into 3 smaller bays. Playa Blanca beach is in the centre with Playa Flamingo to the west and Playa Dorada to the east.
Further eastwards is the super popular Papagayo beach (picture above). Papagayo is actually a series of smaller beaches and coves.
Castillo de las Coloradas
Castillo de las Coloradas is one of the top landmarks in Lanzarote. This old watchtower was built in 1744 to help defend the island. It also offered protection from invading pirates.
Unfortunately there is no access to the castle itself. It’s clifftop location affords it’s visitors some spectacular views. Especially of Lanzarote and the island of Fuerteventura to the south.
Castillo de las Coloradas lies a few hundred metres west of Marina Rubicon at Punta del Aquila. There is a board outside the castle providing information in many languages. The information speaks of the castles history and construction. The sunsets here are particularly striking and definitely worth experiencing when you visit.

Mallorca. What you need to know about holidays in Mallorca 2023, Spain. Beaches, entertainment, attractions
What you need to know about Mallorca
Mallorca is a Spanish island in the Mediterranean Sea, larger than all objects of the Balearic archipelago. Today it is one of the most popular resorts in Spain. Tourists come here not only for the sake of relaxing on paradise beaches, but also for diving, rock climbing or simply contemplating the amazing nature.
The resort is famous for its democracy. Walking along the promenade street, you can meet both members of the royal family and popular artists. Thanks to reasonable prices, Mallorca is quite affordable for a wide range of tourists. nine0005
Mallorca resorts
The capital of the island is the port city of Palma de Mallorca. It’s good to spend lazy days by the sea. One minus – there are always a lot of vacationers in these places.
The closest to the capital is Cala Major. This tourist area has a beach holiday during the day and violent activities in the evening – discos, going to a restaurant or shopping. But finding leisure for children will be problematic.
For honeymooners and couples with children, Cala d’Or is the place to be. Picturesque bays with sandy beaches are surrounded by pine forests. nine0005
The lively resort of Arenal will appeal to lovers of outdoor activities in a noisy company. The prices here are democratic, and most of the hotels are 2-3 star.
More respectable options are the resorts of Playa de Palma and Can Pastilla, offering tourists a wide range of entertainment. Closer to the first coastline, 4-5 star hotels are located here.
For those who want a quiet and stress-free holiday, Illetas, a luxury resort with a slow pace of life, and the calm town of Palma Nova are suitable. nine0005
The modern resort of Magaluf, opposite, is famous for its liveliness, developed infrastructure and comfortable hotels. Usually young people come here, but families with children will also like it here. The city has a water park and a water amusement park Western Water Park, a golf club, karting. In the evening, you should look at the most popular disco in Mallorca – HCM.
Less crowded tourist area – Santa Ponsa. This is a green corner of Mallorca, which is ideal for a secluded family holiday. nine0005
For romance and picturesque nature, you should go to the resort of Paguera, located in the southwest of the island. You can spend hot days here in any of the many bays.
Puerto Polensa is a place of attraction for the creative intelligentsia. Actors, writers, artists come here to relax. On the Formentor peninsula you will find the beach of the same name with amazingly clear water.
Alcudia is especially popular. The tourist center has preserved the ancient city walls, the remains of the Roman city of Polentia, and the amphitheater. nine0005
Mallorca’s beaches
Today, Mallorca has about 200 beaches, both sandy and pebbly, with a total length of more than 500 km. Over 30 coastal areas have received the EU Blue Flag award.
Coastal areas are covered with oak and pine groves and rocky cliffs.
The east of the island is full of bays hidden from prying eyes. The beaches on the north side are ideal for snorkeling. But on the west coast, due to the mountainous landscape, you can only get to the beaches by boat or boat. The southern coast is famous for its developed infrastructure. nine0005
The largest beach of Playa de Palma is located 10 km from the capital. The beach is fully equipped for relaxing near the water.
Es Trenc is the largest wild beach in Mallorca. It is located on the territory of the reserve.
Look for fashionable beaches in Portals Nous. Rich people from all over the planet come to the southern town every year. The main advantages of these places are the golden sand and the azure sea, as well as the preserved sights of the Moorish and Byzantine cultures.
Things to do in Mallorca:
Sit down in the Cathedral of Palma on the benches, made according to the drawings of Gaudí himself.
Watch the marine life in the giant Palm Aquarium.
Try the most expensive local dish – lobster stew, worth almost €100.
Visit the Arab baths of the 10th century in the capital.
See the castles of Alaro, Pollença or Felanitch.
Ride the vintage train from Palma to Soller with magnificent panoramic views along the route. nine0050
Climb to Cape Formentor and see the beauty from it.
Admire the underground lakes in the caves of Mallorca.
Walk along the hanging bridge in the Galatzo Park.
Spain. Description of the country, regions
If you like a quiet and relaxing holiday, then you will definitely like the Spanish town – La Pineda . A significantly young resort located near Terragona and only a hundred kilometers from Barcelona. The nature surrounding the city is very interesting – unusual plants, hot golden sand, nicely warmed by the sun, incredibly beautiful bays, lagoons and rocky bays. Walking through the expanses of the city, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and the slight noise of the Mediterranean Sea. nine0005
La Pineda has a well-developed area of entertainment, there is something for everyone to enjoy an active holiday. There is a huge water park with numerous attractions and amazing water shows with dolphins, and a huge sports complex Euro Sport , equipped with modern sports equipment. And, of course, it is worth visiting Pineda Drink , which impresses with a variety of music cafes, gourmet restaurants and stylish bars. Here you can enjoy incredible dishes of national and local cuisine. nine0005
The clean and lively resort of Catalonia lives in its measured rhythm, every year it welcomes thousands of tourists and travelers from all over the world, it is thanks to this that La Pineda can please with comfortable hotels, entertainment centers and, of course, with its hospitality. Having visited this wonderful town, located along the many kilometers of picturesque embankment, you will forever leave in your memory the feeling of the incredible atmosphere of the Spanish resort. nine0005
How to get there
La Pineda is located 100 km from Barcelona, with regular flights from European countries. You can get from Barcelona to La Pineda by train (15-25 EUR), by bus (12-20 EUR) or by taxi (from 120 to 150 EUR), by rented car, and also by boat, for only 12-23 EUR delivering vacationers from one coastal resort to another. The prices on the page are for July 2021.
Alternatively, La Pineda can be reached via Reus Airport, just 10 km from the resort. From there by bus or taxi. nine0005
Entertainment and attractions of La Pineda
La Pineda itself is a fairly young resort, and there are few attractions here – mostly traditional taverns and cozy restaurants, a variety of souvenir shops and craftsmen of this region.
However, lovers of antiquity will also like it here – next to La Pineda is the ancient city of Vila Seca, known since Roman times. Ancient buildings and a special spirit of antiquity have been preserved here, perfectly combined with the resort atmosphere of the surroundings. Here you can see the towers of the Middle Ages, the main church of the city Iglesia de Sant Esteve built in the 16th century with an original bell tower, a castle built around an old tower, and a chapel – an elegant strict structure, inside which there is a luxurious baroque altar. nine0005
In addition, not far from La Pineda is Tarragona, a real open-air museum. In ancient times, it was called Tarraco and was the capital of the Roman Empire on the Iberian Peninsula. The Roman aqueduct, the amphitheater and the Tomb of the Scipios on the coast have been preserved for the memory of the descendants. The entire Roman architectural ensemble of Tarraco bears the status of “Protection of Humanity” from UNESCO.
Activities
The most popular attraction in La Pineda is the famous Aquopolis water park with numerous attractions and amazing water shows with dolphins. In addition, from here you can take a tourist train to the famous entertainment center and water park “PortAventura” near the neighboring resort of Salou. nine0005
For those who, even on vacation, cannot part with sports, in La Pineda there is a huge Eurosport tourist complex, equipped with the most modern sports equipment. In addition, the coast of La Pineda has everything you need for water sports – from windsurfing to diving. Regardless of whether you are a beginner or an experienced athlete, qualified instructors are at your service.
The main place for walking is the Passeig de Pau Casals, framed by tall sprawling palm trees. Its length is 2.5 kilometers, which is why it is considered the longest promenade in Catalonia. It often hosts festivals, shows for children and street performances. nine0005
The most notable feature of the Passeig de Pau Casals is a statue of a Mediterranean pine-pinia with branches made of metal saucers.
And lovers of noisy parties, discos and nightclubs will appreciate the Pineda Drink Center, which includes an incredible number of various music cafes, bars and restaurants with a rich selection of local and national cuisine.
Long-stay winter holiday destinations in Spain for pensioners
We all know the British winter can be a bit dreary. The nights are drawing in, the weather’s getting colder, and we’re all missing the benefits of the summer sunshine.
It’s no wonder that winter holidays are popular!
If you want to escape the winter’s cold, you don’t have to travel all the way to the Caribbean! There are plenty of destinations closer to home that stay warm throughout the winter closer to home.
The southern Mediterranean is a fantastic choice if you’re looking for the perfect holiday destination for an extended winter break. Island nations like Cyprus and Malta are lovely examples. But Spain seems to have become the most popular choice for pensioners looking for a long-stay winter holiday – and it’s easy to see why.
Why visit Spain in the winter?
Spain is a brilliant holiday destination at all times of the year. You can eat delicious food like tapas, relax on sandy beaches every day and visit incredible cities. There are also convenient flights from all over the UK.
But there are also several reasons why it’s an excellent choice for a getaway during the winter months.
Good weather
Southern Spain and its many islands off the south coast get good weather all year round, including winter. In fact, the winter weather might be better suited to Brits who don’t like scorching heat.
Visiting a place with an average daily temperature of 20°C during January and February sounds much more comfortable than the mid-30s it can reach during the Spanish summer!
Bargain deals
Travelling to Spain in the winter means you can also snag a bargain. Some very affordable package holidays to Spain are available during the winter, with all-inclusive holiday options that make budgeting easy.
Visiting during the winter also means you can avoid the premium costs associated with the school holidays. We know family holidays are great fun, but you can get a better deal if you travel when the grandkids are at school.
Fewer crowds
Another benefit of visiting Spain during winter is that many areas of the country are quieter than at peak season during the summertime. A winter getaway to Spain could be a simple solution if you prefer a more relaxed holiday away from the hustle and bustle.
Travelling in the winter will usually mean smaller crowds, whether you’re going on a city break for some sightseeing, relaxing at the beach club, or playing a round at the golf course.
A great social scene
With that said, you can still enjoy an active social life during the winter months — particularly if you’re over 60.
Most other people heading on holiday at this time of year will be travelling without children. That means you’re more likely to encounter people of a similar age to you, so it’s a great way to make new friends and develop relationships.
The benefits of longer getaways
There are several reasons why a long-stay winter holiday is a good idea.
We all know you can find better holiday deals if you travel out of the peak season. But what many people don’t realise is that long-stay accommodation can actually be cheaper than booking somewhere for a week or two – many holiday rental sites offer discounts for extended stays.
This is particularly true of self-catering accommodation, but it’s also worth looking for long-stay deals for full-board and half-board options.
A longer break means you also have more time to enjoy yourself — you’ll have time to top up your tan, and you can be more flexible with your day-to-day plans. In addition, you’ll be able to get to know a place like the back of your hand, creating lasting memories and forging new friendships.
Extended stays are great if you’re travelling solo because you’ll have more time to meet people and develop relationships. It’s also a brilliant way to find romance while you’re abroad!

Where to go for a long-stay holiday in Spain
There are some beautiful destinations in Spain that are perfect for a holiday, whether you’re looking for a long-stay hotel or a self-catering apartment. Here is a selection of our favourites.
The Canary Islands
Although located off the northwest coast of Africa, the Canary Islands are actually part of Spain. They’re ideal for travellers who want good weather in the winter — daily temperatures on this archipelago can easily reach the low 20s, even in January and February.
The Canary Islands is a chain of eight main islands:
Tenerife
Fuerteventura
Gran Canaria
Lanzarote
La Palma
La Gomera
El Hierro
La Graciosa
Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote are most popular with tourists — but there are some hidden gems in the other four that make them worth a visit too!
The Costa Blanca
The Costa Blanca is an excellent choice if you’d prefer to head to mainland Spain.
The “white coast” is home to the popular tourist resort of Benidorm, but there are plenty of other options if that doesn’t appeal to you. Head here if you like meeting like-minded people and relaxing on beautiful beaches. What’s not to love?
The Costa del Sol
On the southwest coast of Spain is the beautiful Costa del Sol, whose name literally means “sunshine coast”. If that’s not a ringing endorsement in itself, this is a fantastic destination for keen golfers, and there’s excellent seafood on offer.
It’s also got plenty of cultural activities, so it’s a perfect choice for travellers who want to combine sunbathing with sightseeing.
The Balearic Islands
The Balearic Islands include Majorca (also known as Mallorca), Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. There are three main airports with flights arriving from around the UK, including Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted. These are the Palma de Mallorca (PMI), Ibiza (IBZ) and Menorca (MAH) airports.
Ibiza is best known for its nightlife and clubbing scene, which is great if you’re keen to strap on your dancing shoes! But if this doesn’t appeal, the other islands have plenty to keep you occupied during an extended stay.
You could also search for an organised trip that would take you to explore all the main islands in the area. This is a fabulous way to explore the archipelago and choose your favourite for next winter’s trip!
Winter sun holidays in Spain
There are many reasons to take a long winter break in Spain, especially for pensioners. It’s a fantastic place to top your vitamin D levels — this could prevent you from getting ill in the winter! — and it’s easy to meet new people.

Travel Info: Long Stay Winter Sun – All Inclusive
In Brief
Holiday Ideas for Longer Stays
Would you fancy a holiday that gives you an option for more than 28 days in the sun with high quality entertainment and a range of different board available? All Inclusive Long stay winter holidays deliver unbeatable comparison when it comes to the three R’s – rest, relaxation and rejuvenation. Sound good so far? The good news is that you can get long stay winter holidays to your favourite destination at a fraction of the price you would expect to pay during peak summer season. Usually if you are looking for a long stay you will be looking a destination that can offer you up to a month and in some cases staying longer than a month; anything from 28 days to a gigantic 11 week stay.
Many hotels will be only too glad of the winter holiday trade and thus very good discounts are generally available, so if you are looking a long stay all inclusive holiday over the winter just have a search and see how much you could be saving yourself rather than staying at home in the freezing British winter.
If you are thinking about one of these long stays throughout the winter try primarily to book an all inclusive holiday as the savings for this is phenomenal. This is most popular with the retired tourist with a bit of time on their hands, surprisingly if it is done correctly it can actually be no more costly than if you had stayed at home.
Attractions
Avoid the British winters and go relax for a month or more
Booking one of our long stay winter destinations is no more difficult than booking a normal package holiday for a week or two. The destinations we recommend you go to have well known long stay hotels and are very experienced in offering good quality accommodation over the winter months for their guests. Flights are available from most regional airports, although there will be some that only offer a summer schedule. To get the best idea for your long stay destination check what flights are available from your regional airport first.
The most expensive winter destination is the Canary Islands which include the islands of Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote. This is probably due to the terrific weather that is available here during the winter. These islands are easy to get to and normally most of the hotels will offer a selection of long stay winter sun holidays and will allow for a selection of different board types, half-board, bed and breakfast, full-board and all inclusive, all at competitive prices. While going to Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura on winter long stay holidays are most tourist preferences, although there are still plenty of other options for cheap sunshine during the winter with lots of good entertainment available. Costa del Sol and the Costa Blanca are two of the best value destinations with long stay winter holidays in Benidorm the most popular in this region.
If you are looking a bit more sunshine and heat then 28 day holidays in Cyprus may be just the ticket for beating the winter cold. How about a long stay all inclusive in Malta, Portugal and Greece? These are perfect destinations if you are looking for safe long stay holidays for pensioners.

December Science Question of the Month Winner: Daniel Phillips
Each month, College of Science alumni have the opportunity to test their skills and solve a current science student exam question. These questions are posed in the monthly College of Science newsletter, Discovery Monthly. The very first Science Question of the Month was featured in the 2022 alumni magazine Discovery.
If you don’t receive the newsletter but would like to, you can sign up to recieve it monthly. Please note, only alumni will be featured in the newsletter. Non-alumni are still welcome to submit a response, and we’ll let you know if you got it right!
The December Science Question of the Month, provided by associate dean and chemistry professor Vince Catalano, was pulled from a Chemistry 181 exam.
Question
In the “Méthode Champenoise” grape juice is fermented in a wine bottle to produce champagne. How many grams of glucose (C6H12O6) are fermented if 500 mL of CO2(g) is produced at 0.862 atm and 310 K?
The fermentation reaction is:
C6H12O6(aq) -> 2 CH3CH2OH(aq) + 2 CO2(g)
Solution
To solve this problem, we need to use the ideal gas law equation, which is:
PV = nRT
where P is the pressure of the gas, V is the volume of the gas, n is the number of moles of gas, R is the gas constant, and T is the temperature.
We are given that the pressure of the CO2 gas is 0.862 atm and the volume of the gas is 500 mL, and we can assume that the temperature is 310 K. We want to know the number of moles of CO2 gas produced, which we can then use to calculate the number of moles of glucose that were fermented.
First, we need to convert the volume of the gas from mL to L, since the volume must be in liters for the ideal gas law equation. We can do this by dividing the volume in mL by 1000:
V = 500 mL / 1000 = 0.5 L
Next, we need to determine the value of the gas constant R. The value of the gas constant depends on the units we are using for pressure, volume, and temperature. The correct value of the gas constant to use in this problem is 0.0821 L*atm/(mol*K). This value is appropriate to use when the pressure is in atm, the volume is in liters, and the temperature is in kelvins.
Finally, we can plug the values we have into the ideal gas law equation and solve for n, the number of moles of CO2 gas produced:
Now that we know the number of moles of CO2 gas produced, we can use the balanced chemical equation for the fermentation reaction to calculate the number of moles of glucose that were fermented. According to the balanced chemical equation, for every 1 mole of glucose that is fermented, 2 moles of CO2 are produced. Thus, the number of moles of glucose that were fermented is:

By Bus
There are three bus routes available at the airport and the bus stops are located just outside the terminal building, near to the departures hall entrance. All of these routes are operated by Tiadhe and the telephone number for information is: (+34) 928 85 57 26.
Please note that tickets cannot be bought online or in advance. There is also no benefit for buying a return ticket, as the price is the same as two single tickets.
If you are planning to use the bus a lot during your holiday you can buy a non-resident ‘Bono Card‘ which gives you 5% off all your fares. You can ask for a Bono Card when you pay for your ticket or if you want to try out your Spanish, ask for ‘tarjeta no residente‘. The card costs €2.00 and you can fill it with whatever credit amount you choose. When your credit runs out you just top it up on the bus.

Other Services
For services to other destinations in Fuerteventura, you will first need to take any of the above buses to the bus station in Puerto del Rosario and make a connection. Particularly useful is Route 6 which runs from the capital to the northern resort of Corralejo via Parque Hollandes, Los Hoteles and local stops in between. The fare to Corralejo is €3.40 and the timetable can be found here.
Travelling by Bus
The buses in Fuerteventura are clean, relatively cheap and usually on time, so they can be a good and cost-effective way of getting around the island for people who don’t want to drive or take an organised tour.
However, careful planning is required when visiting some locations as the service can be very infrequent. Also, if you are in a group the fares can soon mount up, in which case hiring a car might be the better option. If you are interested in hiring a car, you can find out more on this page.
Airport bus Fuerteventura, how to get to and from the airport
Fuerteventura Airport (FUE), also called El Matorral Airport, is an international airport serving the Spanish island of Fuerteventura. It is located in El Matorral, only 5 km southwest of the capital, Puerto del Rosario. The airport provides connections to more than 80 destinations worldwide and it served over 6 million passengers in 2018. Here are options of reaching the city from Fuerteventura airport:
Public transport: There are three public bus lines connecting the airport and the capital city. You can choose between them depending on your final destination as they continue from the capital to different tourist areas. The bus station at the airport is on the ground floor, by the Exit (Salidas).
Route 3: Airport – Puerto del Rosario – Caleta de Fuste-Las Salinas. Buses run pretty frequent, usually every 15-30 minutes, depending on the time of the day. In the late night hours, from 22:00 to midnight, buses run every hour.
Make sure to check the prices and timetable when taking this route.
Route 10: Airport – Puerto del Rosario – Morro Jable This is not as frequent route as previous one, with only a couple of departures per day, so we recommend checking bus schedule.
Route 16: Airport – Puerto del Rosario – Gran Tarajal Also pretty infrequent route to the city, so make sure to check the timetable when using this route.
Taxi service: You can find official airport taxis waiting outside the terminal building. Keep in mind that you should only take official taxis which are located at the signed taxi rank. Pay attention to the fares as well, which are different for certain days of the week. Fare for a weekday start is around 3€, while for Sundays and holidays fares start around 3.5€. Each next kilometer is priced between 0.55 – 0.70€, depending on the day of the week.
NOTE: There are extra supplement fees for taxis starting or ending at the port and at the airport of 1,70€.
Transfer: To be sure that there’ll be a car waiting for you in front of the airport, the best option would be to book a private transfer from Fuerteventura Airport to your accommodation. Make sure to book it in advance so the transfer company has enough time to arrange it and inform you about all relevant information regarding the service.
Renting a car at Fuerteventura Airport: There are several international car rental companies at the airport, such as Sixt, Topcar, Payless, Avis, Hertz and Cicar. However, bear in mind that renting a car might cost you more as some companies may charge an additional fee because you rent at the airport. To avoid this, we recommend booking a car online.

Last week, Our Spain visited the kitesurfing tournament, which took place in the Catalan city of Castelldefels.
We got there by car, and thanks to an error in the GPS navigator, we discovered insanely beautiful places not far from Barcelona. nine0013
The Garraf National Park is spread over 13,000 hectares south of Barcelona.
There are many vineyards on the edges of the park.
Costa Dorada met us with beautiful weather, strong winds
and big dog waves.
The competition started early in the morning on November 1,
but the registration of participants took place until the late evening of October 30.
Each day of the competition began with a meeting of participants or (skippers meeting) at 9 am. Here they announced the wind forecast for the current day, the possible schedule and order of the races for the day.
After that, the participants began to prepare their equipment, and the beach was very quickly covered with kites of all colors and sizes.
From the first day of the competition on the shore one could meet a large number of journalists, cameramen, video crew
with all kinds of photo and video equipment.
The competition that took place in Spain was the last leg of the 2012 European Kitesurf Tour. This time, 97 participants from 19 countries of the world came to the tournament.
All of them competed in two disciplines: freestyle and course flight.
Freestyle was held according to the single elemination and double elemenetion system. Both systems are a little confusing for ordinary people to understand – so all the results were immediately recorded on a large stand right on the beach. nine0013
Everything went according to the rules, it is important for all participants to understand the system of flags that the judges put up at the beginning, during and at the end of each race.
The organizers and participants were given a house near the beach, where they could spend their free time, have breakfast and just have fun.
The entrance to this “paradise” with a pool was closed to mere mortals.
As in all competitions, there were sponsors here. And, as usual, no more or less extreme competition in our time can not do without the participation of Red Bull. nine0013
This year’s European tour was sponsored by the car manufacturer Mini.
Right there, right on the beach, you could sign up for a small test drive of all Mini models.
All the spectators who came to the beach were entertained by a Red Bull DJ right from the roof of his Red Bullmobile.
Near the competition venue, right on the beach, there are tents of manufacturers of various kite equipment.
You could test the latest prototype racing boards, take 2013 freestyle board models on the water, or just take a photo with a kite bar as a keepsake.
The most desperate spectators could experience the latest hit of the season – the water jet pack! Sort of like a flying superman suit over the water.
