Looking for a warmer destination to visit in the colder winter months? After spending a few winter months in southern Germany, we were ready to board a quick flight and find some sunshine and warmth! The Canary Islands are an easy 3-hour flight from Stuttgart on TUI fly. Below I’ll share all of our favorite things to do in Tenerife with day by day information. From the best places in Tenerife to family-friendly attractions, including a 5-day Tenerife itinerary and the best Spanish food!

Why did we pick Tenerife, Canary Islands?

Tenerife was an ideal choice because it is a collection of islands at the southernmost point of Europe. The islands are a part of Spain and located just off the west coast of Africa. During the winter months, it is the warmest area of Europe, warmer than Malta and Majorca with its southernmost location. In February, the weather was in the ’70s, and although it wasn’t ocean swimming weather, we enjoyed some really nice days on the beach and even played a waterpark without wetsuits!

We picked Tenerife for its variety of activities and kid-friendly adventures. Tenerife has a wide variety of landscapes including a desolate landscape near the Volcano, black sand beaches on the north shore and lush gardens to visit. Its sandy beaches were also a huge draw since many beaches in Europe are rock or pebbles.

When did we travel?

We decided to take advantage of a long weekend in February and extended our trip to a 5-night stay. We didn’t want to leave! The weather in February was perfect with highs in the 60’s and low 70’s. It may not seem like it’s that warm, but when you are arriving from Germany, and it’s highs of the ’20s and ’30s, that temperature difference feels perfect.

The island was not overly crowded with tourists and the prices for lodging, rental car and flights were great.

How did we get to Tenerife?

We were living in Stuttgart, Germany at the time. TUI Fly was an easy choice with their inexpensive fares and direct flights from Stuttgart to Tenerife South. We had a great experience using TUI Fly. The cabin crew gave our son a fun blow up ball, which was used frequently on the beach and our flights were smooth sailing. We did have a delay leaving Tenerife, but that was due to an unforeseen event with a passenger on the incoming flight, so no fault of TUI.

We paid just over 500 euros for two adults, one child, two suitcases (both ways) and meals on the plane. You could easily save a bit of money with less luggage and bring your own meals. Our flight prices were only around 350 euros total.

Rental car or no?

We decided that we wanted to explore the entire island, so a rental car was a must. Both my husband and I are experienced with driving a manual vehicle but note that the island is hilly, so if you aren’t comfortable driving a manual, I’d highly recommend paying a bit extra for an automatic.

We rented from Autoreisen Rent a car and didn’t have any complaints. The majority of the rental car companies were a quick walk straight out of the terminal out into the rental car/parking lot area. We paid 85 euros for a Class C rental car for the 5 nights and 6 days of our trip. That’s a steal if you ask me!

The car was clean and in excellent running condition. The staff was helpful with pick up and drop off. We did see the car seats that you could rent from the company, and they looked clean. We don’t rent car seats from car rental companies, so we brought our own, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Where did we stay?

I’m all about all-inclusive resorts… except when I want to explore, then I feel like I’m paying a bunch of money for a resort that I’m hardly spending any time at.

For this trip, we elected to split a large 4 bedroom house with a heated pool with friends of ours. We met a great couple when we first moved to Germany, and they became our traveling buddies.   We both have boys a year apart and only children (they added a sweet baby girl this past November). The boys made for perfect playmates and traveling with friends meant easy babysitters for date nights. Win-win!

Want all the details on the vacation rental? Here is the link! The house was pretty amazing. It features three large bedrooms with multiple beds and another “bedroom” located at the back of the house with additional beds. There is a large living area with an attached kitchen (well-stocked). The two-car garage was converted into a game room with pool, table tennis and a large outdoor kitchen with brick fire oven. There is also an additional full bath, which is perfect because it is located just above the pool. The heated outdoor pool is excellent for a dip, and there is also a large grassy area with a shed stocked with pool and outdoor toys. Seriously, if you have kids, this is the place for you!

The pool is NOT gated, so if you have little ones, you’ll have to keep your eyes open. But the front of the door is located a bit of a walk down the hill to the pool, so there isn’t instant access. If you are worried, you can lock the front door (with a key) or install this easy to use door alarm. Use double-sided sticky tape and attach it to the door. An alarm will sound when the door opens, a perfect compromise and added security.

The entire property is also gated with parking inside the gates, so it was nice and secure. It is located about 20 minutes from the airport up the hillside. Also, easy access to the highway to venture around the island and there are multiple grocery stores just down the hill (including a Lidl).

What did we pack on our travels to Tenerife?

We try to minimize the amount of great we bring, but with little kids, it isn’t always easy. Here is the list of the items we brought with us and why.

A Mix of Clothing: Tenerife has a wide variety of temperatures on its island. Ranging from freezing up on Mount Teide, to warm at the beach. The evenings can also get a bit cool, especially in the winter, so bring a light jacket to stay warm.

Stroller: The stroller was essential on this trip, especially when walking around the theme parks and exploring the local towns. Our son was still taking naps at the time, so it doubled as a bed on the go. We travel with our City Mini GT in a padded stroller case. After over 20 flights, it has held up with zero damage and the case fits items such as extra diapers, wipes, blankets and more.

Car Seat: We don’t rely on rental car seats (because you never know the history). It’s a pain, but we checked a travel car seat for the first 3 years. After that, we purchased a Ride Safer Travel Harness (which was a game-changer)! Our car seat was only used for travel, and we always used a padded car seat bag with backpack straps for easy portability.

Sand Toys: You can’t visit the beach without sand toys! You can either purchase some when you arrive or bring a few of our own. We travel with a foldable sand bucket and thick plastic shovel that holds up with lots of digging. *Be sure to write your name on the back of toys*

Kids Items: our suitcases also contain a few books for bedtime stories, music for our son’s room to provide some familiarity (also diminishes surrounding noises), and a few small toys (like a play-doh set and cars/trucks).

*I’ve added links to the retailer Amazon if you’d like to purchase or learn more about our gear recommendations.*

How did we spend our days on Tenerife? (Things to do in Tenerife)

Day One:Siam Park (Waterpark)

Our first full day in Tenerife started out with a trip to Siam Park. Siam Water Park is one of Europe’s best waterparks and is rated the #1 waterpark in the world! It is open 10am-5pm in February and is located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is one of the best places in Tenerife to combine the warm sunshine with the cooling waters.

If you drive, you’ll pay 3 euro to park. Be sure to arrive early to get a parking spot. Otherwise, you’ll be hunting in an adjacent neighborhood, and then you’ll have a bit of a walk.

Be sure to bring towels! We had a swim bag packed into our luggage, which made it easy to haul any needed supplies and hide drinks and snacks inside the towels. Food is expensive in the park, typical for theme/waterparks. If you want to rent a wetsuit in colder weather, it is 5 euros, and you can rent your wetsuit near the locker rentals.

We really enjoyed our visit to Siam Park. We spent most of our time in the kid’s zone, but my husband and I took turns running off to ride the larger and faster water slides. We spent most of the morning playing and then enjoyed a nice lunch inside the park. The food was expensive, as to be expected, and it was typical fare (burgers, fries, chicken nuggets). We also grabbed some ice cream before exiting.

It would be easy to spend an entire day at Siam Park, Water Kingdom, Tenerife.  Siam Park is one of the largest aquatic theme parks in Europe and features 14 unique water attractions including the Tower of Power, The Dragon, Mekong Rapids, an Adventure Land set in its own tropical paradise, and a HUGE man-made beach with wave pool and even sea lions.

Top tips for visiting Siam Park in Tenerife
– To fully appreciate all the attractions, you need a full day, if not multiple days!
– I’d recommend water shoes if you are visiting during the warmer months. The ground can be scorching and waiting in lines can easily burn your feet. If you forget them, you can purchase water shoes and borrow wetsuits (for a fee) on cooler days. They do offer wet suits for toddlers.
– If you want to avoid the cost of the locker fees (and the lines), be sure to reduce valuables to the bare minimum.  Small locker 3€ | big locker 5€ | towel 3€
+ 5€ of deposit

Los Cristianos

We ended up only spend 1/2 a day at Siam Water Park because we were traveling with friends and we wanted to meet up to let the kids take naps and explore the Los Cristianos beach. We started off with a nice seafood lunch at Abordo before exploring the beach walk along Paseo las Vistas. It is a nice wide boardwalk with shops, plenty of places to get some gelato and sandcastle builders. Check those out below! The walk along the boardwalk takes about 20-30 minutes, or longer depending on how much you stop.

Los Cristianos is a popular beach town and is one of the top places to visit in Tenerife so you’ll notice more crowds and lively evening entertainment. If you are day visitors, like us, and you want to enjoy the beach, bring a few euro to claim a beach chair. If you want to go for the low-cost option, bring your own towel and find a nice palm tree. There is plenty of sand for everyone!

Top tips for visiting Los Cristianos

-We found parking near the pier at Parking Puerto Cristianos, price 1.70 eur/h

-There are plenty of places to eat in the area. Make sure you do a quick google search to make sure the place you pick has good ratings

-Stay hydrated, the sun can easily dehydrate you. Gelato is a good alternative to drinks. 🙂

We decided to head back to our vacation rental to enjoy our heated pool and cook up a nice dinner with friends.

Day Two: Santa Cruz:

Around half of Tenerife’s population lives in the City of Santa Cruz making it a vibrant and metropolis place to visit. The main reason for visiting Santa Cruz was to see the Mercado Municipal Nuestra Senora de Africa- or African Market. This amazing market in Santa Cruz Tenerife first opened in 1942. It boomed around the 1960s before facing the crisis of the 1980s with supermarkets and grocery stores. It survives today in part due to its array of delicious produces and no less than 12 different eating places. ⁣

Top tips for visiting the African Market:

-Be sure to arrive before it closes at 2pm daily (Closed Mondays)

-If you are traveling with kids, there is a playground just outside the market, as well as a children’s play area inside.

-Bring cash to pay for your food and produce.

After our visit to the market, we wanted to linger over Tapas (while the kids took a nap). It was a short six-minute walk and there were plenty of tables to sit outside. I highly recommend getting a variety of plates and sharing. My favorite was the eggplant with drizzled honey and nuts accompanied by a nice glass of house wine.

More things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

-Walk around the Parque García Sanabria, the largest public park in the Canary Islands. This botanical garden is the perfect place to discover plant species along with cheerful fountains, sculptures, and gazebos.

Playa de Benija:

After a wonderful morning and early afternoon in Santa Cruz, we were reading to head into the mountains and experience the northern tip of Tenerife.

The beach Benijo is one of the most spectacular beaches in Tenerife. The best part is that you’ll likely be the only tourists on the beach due to its remote location, but it can be said that it is one of the most charming parts of the island.

Top tips for visiting the Benijo Beach:

-Find parking near the restaurant El Mirador.

-Try to visit during low tide to maximize the amount of sand visible.

-You’ll have to head down a considerable amount of stairs, so its best for fit visitors

-There are no services on the beach, so bring your own towel and snacks

Day Three: Teide National Park: UNESCO World Heritage Site

We wanted to start off the day exploring Teide National Park. This mountain is Spain’s tallest peak and an absolute “must-see” if you are visiting Tenerife. It is easy to reach from either the North or the South, depending on where you are staying. It was about a 45 minutes drive from our vacation rental.

Teide National Park is a delight with its array of vegetation ranging from thick pine forest to barren deserts.

Be sure to visit one of the visitor centers. El Portillo is in the Northeast part of the park and focuses mostly on the environment, geological importance and the living animals and plants in the area. But it also has interactive displays for the kids and information about the volcano! There was a great section with buttons to press and items to touch inside a fake lava tube, perfect for little explorers.  If you are a plant lover, be sure to check out the adjacent botanical gardens that are free of charge.

Be sure to head all the way into the park to the parking area below the cable car (Cañadas del Teide, 38300, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain). In eight minutes you’ll be standing on the top of a dormant volcano. The views are amazing but watch for any altitude sickness in the little ones. The cable car to the summit is actually not recommended for children under the age of two. No one said we couldn’t bring the kids in our group, we had a little one around the age of one.

If we weren’t traveling with children, I would have booked one of their evening programs. It is said that stargazing on top of Mount Teide is some of the best in the world. There are many tours offered such as “Sunset and Stars” where you watch the sunset from the summit, enjoy a gourmet dinner and then do some stargazing. If you are really interested in stargazing, be sure to book a tour of the Teide Observatory, which is the world’s largest observatory!

After visiting the top of the dormant volcano, we decided to head back down and drive back towards the South. We stopped along the way to explore some of the paths and vegetation. If you are looking for an easy hike to stretch your legs, be sure to stop near Parador de Cañadas del Teide. Located just across from the hotel is a parking area where you can walk towards Roques de García. My son enjoyed clambering over the rocks and looking for little bugs.

Top tips for visiting Teide National Park:

-Teide National park is 3718m above sea level and roads can be closed due to snow in the winter. Be sure to bundle up!

-Alternately, temperatures in the summer can reach as high as 100 Fahrenheit  (40 C), so bring water, sunglasses, and sunscreen

-Fun Fact: Teide National Park has been used for multiple movies, including Clash of the Titans.

-Want to spend the night in the park? Book a room at the Altavista Refuge

-If you are visiting in the summer, be sure to buy your cable car tickets online, with 4 million visitors each year (the majority in the summer), tickets can sell out.

Restaurante Casa Pana

We had worked up quite an appetite, so we headed South to Restaurante Casa Pana located in the town of Vilaflor. This restaurant is a gem and is highly recommended. We were seated on the terrace surrounded by views of the valley and flowering bougainvillea. As a group of friends, we ordered quite a few plates to share. The prices were reasonable, the food was delicious and the service was great. We lingered quite awhile over wine and dessert.

In true vacation mode, we headed back to our vacation home to spend the late afternoon in the pool, playing with the kids and relaxing. We were really enjoying the warmer temperatures.

Day Four: Loco Parque

We decided to head to Loco Parque.  Loro Parque opened in the 1970s and its focus was on parrots, hence the name: Loro Parque translated in Spanish means, Parrot Park. The park still has its fair share of parrots but has morphed into much more. It is an extensive park with both a zoo style feel and an aquarium.

Word of Note: We didn’t really do our research before we headed to Loco Parque. The park features multiple animal shows including controversial whales. Please do your own research before deciding whether or not you want to visit.

Loco Parque is quite large at around 33 acres of parkland. Some of our favorite areas included the penguins with the moving walkway. It was feeding time, so we watched as the staff fed each penguin their fish for the day. The animals throughout the park were quite active and the enclosures were well kept and large, but again, I understand many are against zoos and aquariums.

My son really enjoyed the children’s treetop climbing zone. It was perfectly situated next to a little cafe, so i grabbed a bit of food while my husband enjoyed watching our son clamber around the rope bridges and tunnels.

Another favorite was the parrot area in Katandra. You can get up close with the beautiful parrots at the feeding stations.

The park is really well laid out with easy stroller and wheelchair access. There is a wide variety of food available for purchase from sit down restaurants to small cafes with the typical fare.

Top tips for visiting Loco Parque:

-If you plan to visit both Loco Parque and Siam Park, you can buy a combo ticket to save a bit of money

-If you want to see the shows, I suggest heading to the back of the park to see the Orca and dolphin show at the beginning of your visit.

-There is a free train that runs between Reyes Católicos and Loco Parque.

-The park is open daily from 8:30 am to 6:45 pm

-Children are free for children under the age of 6

Day Five: Headed Home

We were supposed to head to the airport, but our flight ended up getting delayed, so we knew we would have a few more hours. We wanted to stay close to the airport and soak up a bit more of the beach and sun, so we ended our trip to Tenerife with a trip down to Playa San Blas. There were plenty of nice resorts and we found a quiet beach with perfect sand to play a bit before our flight home.

Tenerife was perfect as a short escape from the winter blues to the warmth and sun of the islands. Tenerife offers plenty to see and do, or you can easily find an all-inclusive resort to recharge and relax. It is also the southernmost point in Europe, making it the best destination for families. Please feel free to ask any questions about the trip, we are an open book!

What to see in Tenerife in 5 days

Tenerife is an island with so much to offer, that you wouldn’t believe you could get to know it properly in only 5 days—but you’d be wrong. If you use the time well, you will be able to enjoy the island’s wonderful natural scenery, its cities, its beaches and of course, its culture and mouthwatering cuisine. The exceptionally pleasant climate means that you can carry out all kinds of outdoor activities all year round, or visit cities whose very streets recall the history of the first settlers.

This is an island with lots of little surprises for visitors keen to enjoy special experiences. Ascending Mount Teide which is one of the greatest volcanoes in the world, bathing on endless, idyllic beaches, having lunch at a guachinche, or traditional tavern—these are just a few of the experiences that will enable you to derive the maximum enjoyment from your 5-day trip.

Itinerary day 1

10:00 -12:00

Mount Teide National Park

The Teide National Park, a World Heritage Site, offers a landscape that could be straight out of science fiction, being made up of volcanic rock and lava debris surrounding the highest peak in Spain. You will be astonished by the Roques de García, you can ride in the cable car almost up to the summit of Mount Teide, and then you can go on a walk offering panoramic views from the heights.

12:30 – 14:00

La Orotava

La Orotava is a visit not to be missed. Its carefully preserved streets exude history, tradition and culture. It is one of those places that has been able to retain its true character. Its historic quarter has been declared a National Historic and Artistic Site. You will see architectural jewels, fantastical gardens, streets that will transport you back to another age… Here we find the essence of the island’s most deep-rooted traditions.

14:30 – 16:00

Bar Los Castillos – La Orotava

It is a small, but welcoming, establishment where you can enjoy authentic Canary Island home cooking. Its speciality is the typical La Orotava rabbit stew, but you should also try the papas arrugás [’wrinkled’ potatoes], grilled cheese with mojo [traditional Canary Island sauce], and the cod. Those with a sweet tooth will love the almond cake.

16:30 – 18:00

Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz provides the ideal balance of tourist activity and authentic local day-to-day life. The natural swimming pools of Lago Martiánez, the Plaza del Charco, the fishing quay, and the fishermen’s quarter, La Ranilla, are some of the must-visit spots. And if you fancy taking a refreshing dip, try one of its black sand beaches, such as Playa Jardín.

18:30 – 20:30

Botanical Gardens

One place definitely not to be missed is the Puerto de la Cruz Botanical Gardens. To visit it is a genuine treat for the senses. Over 4,000 species from all five continents will give you the feeling of being in the very heart of the jungle. This is one of the most spectacular botanical gardens in Spain, and is also the country’s second oldest, after the one in Madrid.

21:00 – 23: 00

Bodegón Casa El Rubio – Puerto de la Cruz

This establishment is a typical Canary Island restaurant or old-fashioned guachinche [tavern] whose origins go back to the street markets that in times gone by would spring up to sell the new season’s wine. Our recommendation: try the fruity white wine, the ribs with corn on the cob, the meat and the squid.

Itinerary day 2

10:00 – 12:30

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The island’s capital offers a wide range of possibilities for enjoyment for all as, in addition to its culture and leisure options, it has a lively social scene. No-one should neglect to visit the Plaza de España, the attractive churches, the historic districts, or the Adán Martín auditorium, the work of the renowned architect Santiago de Calatrava.

12:45 – 14:30

San Cristóbal de la Laguna

To stroll through this city, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, is to step back into the seventeenth-century while you admire its many mansions, old palaces and churches. At night, it is a vibrant place to go for a few drinks, due to its multicultural, student vibe.

14: 45 – 16: 30

Cofradía La Laguna Restaurant

This restaurant in the heart of La Laguna offers a menu whose highlights are good fish and seafood. Savour the limpets, octopus, black rice with squid, or the escaldón de pescado [traditional fish stew]. And if you want a truly authentic Canary Island dish, don’t hesitate to order the ropa vieja [chickpeas and meat stew].

17:00 – 19:00

The Anaga massif

The Anaga massif is an idyllic landscape if you are fond of hiking or of just walking in the countryside. There is a trail called El Bosque Encantado [Enchanted Forest], not far from the hamlet of Taganana, which will have you spellbound. If you fancy a dip, try the neighbouring beach of Almáciga, an incredibly beautiful place, and one of the most picturesque beaches on the island.

19:30 – 21:00

Playa de las Teresitas

What could be a better end to the day than watching the sun set from the beach at Las Teresitas? Its white sand, brought here from the Sahara desert, is reminiscent of beaches in the Caribbean, something highly unusual on an island where the beaches are normally of black volcanic sand.

21:00 – 23:00

La Hierbita Restaurant

In this ancient tavern, whose walls have witnessed over 120 years of history, fresh produce from local suppliers takes precedence. The traditional, high-quality cooking on offer here will please even the most discriminating tastes.

Itinerary day 3

10:00 – 12:00

Garachico

Garachico is a charming town, which has done well to conserve its historic centre. Here, you can take a step back into the island’s colonial past. In addition, it has some superb natural swimming pools formed by lava streams near the San Miguel castle, which make an ideal stopping-off point.

12:30 – 14:00

Icod de los Vinos

This is where you will find the famous Drago Milenario [Thousand-Year-Old Dragon Tree], an emblem of the town, along with a carefully conserved historic centre. Nor would you want to miss Matriz de San Marcos church, the Convent of Saint Francis, or the squares of Lorenzo Cáceres and La Pila. You could have an aperitif before lunch, and try the local wine and cheeses.

14:30 – 16:30

Las Aguas Restaurant

If you want to try an exceptionally good rice dish, this place is a safe bet. The menu is based on a wide range of rice broths and a first-rate fish offering. The establishment has ocean views and a very pleasant terrace. The perfect spot to recharge your batteries.

17:00 – 20:00

Los Gigantes Cliffs

As you travel towards the island’s westernmost point at Punta Teno, the Los Gigantes cliffs, towering to a height of almost 600 metres, offer amazing views. To access them, you will need to travel to Santiago del Teide, and then make your way up to one of its breathtaking viewpoints. This place offers a wealth of activities, in addition to the panoramic views. You can go cetacean, dolphin or whale spotting, or go for a sail in a kayak.

21:00 – 23:00

San Hô Restaurant

Located in Royal Hideaway Corales Beach, this restaurant bearing the Japanese name for coral promises to take patrons on a fabulous culinary journey through Japan, Peru and the Canaries. Come enjoy the exquisite fusion cuisine of Chef Jamie Palmar, whose impressive track record includes Abama Kabuki, El Rincón de Juan Carlos, Sensu, Kazan and Naiko.

Itinerary day 4

10:00 – 12:00

The Güímar Pyramids

Güímar constitutes one of the island’s pleasant surprises. It is not particularly touristy, but it is a fascinating archaeological site. Here you will find the famous black pyramids and, what is more, they are surrounded by a botanical garden.

12:30 – 14:00

Candelaria

Candelaria is the home of the patron saint of the island of Tenerife. This town, which has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, is well worth a visit. In the square where the basilica stands (the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias), we can see several bronze statues depicting the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands, the Guanche kings or menceyes, in their traditional dress.

14:30 – 16:00

La Casona del Vino Restaurant – Candelaria

Typical Creole food, rice and meat dishes, all accompanied by good wines. A pleasant, welcoming establishment with lovely views and offering excellent value for money. Who could ask for more?

16:30 – 20:00

Playa El Médano

This is Tenerife’s surfing and kitesurfing beach par excellence. The kites flying over the ocean while tracing waves of colour is a memorable sight. But if water sports are not your thing, you could always visit the Montaña Roja Special Nature Reserve with its astounding views, or just stay on the beach and enjoy the cooling sea breeze.

21:00 – 22:30

Tasca La Lata del Gofio

Offering views of the ocean, and with the Montaña Roja as the backdrop, this tavern has a bar area with tables and a bar counter, as well as a quieter area for family or group lunches and dinners. A quiet place, with excellent Canary Island cooking, where you can enjoy an extra-special end to the day.

Itinerary day 5

10:00 – 12:00

Playa de las Américas

This is one of the best-known beaches in Tenerife. During the daytime, it is a quiet place where you can enjoy the ocean and the atmosphere of its promenade. At night, however, it becomes one of the island’s most popular spots for partying and nightlife.

12:00 – 15:00

Siam Park

It is considered one of the best water parks in the world. Siam Park was inspired by the Asiatic kingdom of Siam (now Thailand), and its architecture is reminiscent of that country. The water rides are the highlight, but there are also relaxation areas and a shopping area in the style of a little Thai town.

15:00 – 16:00

La Masía del Mar Restaurant

With wonderful views of the bay of La Caleta de Adeje, this restaurant is a superb option if you fancy a paella or some fresh fish. If you prefer to go during the evening, entertainment is provided in the form of live music.

16:30 – 21:00

Arona y Costa Adeje

Tourists seeking beaches and sunshine tend to prefer the south of the island. At times, you might think you are in another country. But this area also has superb beaches and friendly bars, eateries and other establishments where you can enjoy an aperitif, do some shopping or buy souvenirs.

21:30 – 23:30

Maresía Restaurant by Hermanos Padrón

Patrons will savour spectacular haute cuisine creations and unique flavours using the best local ingredients as they take in spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean from the rooftop at Royal Hideaway Corales Beach. The Michelin-starred and Repsol-sunned Padrón brothers offer the flavours of the Canary Islands and the sea in a scrumptious culinary offering. Tasting menus are available and recommended for 16 years and older.

Party Capital of Tenerife

inspirock.com/spain/playa-de-las-americas-trip-planner”>Known around the world as a hotspot for beach life and vibrant night culture, Playa de las Américas remains one of the most-visited vacation resorts in the Canary Islands.

Attractions like Scuba & Snorkeling and Siam Park make great kid-friendly stops. You’ll find plenty of places to visit near Playa de las Americas: Icod de los Vinos (Cueva del Viento & ARTlandya) and Puerto de la Cruz (The English Library Tenerife, Loro Parque, &more). There’s still lots to do: learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at Zoo Tenerife Monkey Park, get outside with Aron Tenerife Surf Academy, tour the pleasant surroundings at Playa del Duque, and stop by Library Reading Up.

To find ratings, maps, where to stay, and more tourist information, go to the Playa de las Americas travel route planner.

London, UK to Playa de las Americas is an approximately 7. 5-hour flight. When traveling from London in April, plan for somewhat warmer days and warmer nights in Playa de las Americas: temperatures range from 26°C by day to 19°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 2nd (Sat) to allow enough time to fly back home.

How many days you need to visit Tenerife

Playa del Duque in Tenerife South – a beautiful place to relax with a cocktail in hand

If you are planning your first holiday to Tenerife you may be asking yourself how much time do you need in order to see the island and discover some of the best sights.

  • The perfect Tenerife itinerary
  • 3 days itinerary in Tenerife (a long weekend in Tenerife)
  • One week in Tenerife – 7 days itinerary to visit the largest Canary Island
  • So how many days do you need to discover Tenerife properly?

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, plus you have to account for the enormous Mount Teide located right in the center of the island, which means that in many parts the roads are not flat, instead, they are full of turns and twists, which is what gives the island its charm and natural beauty. But this also means that moving around takes time, so you need to account for that in your planning, as well as for the traffic jams that sometimes form on the TF-1 and TF-5 highways.

The perfect Tenerife itinerary

Our ideal holiday in Tenerife is a mix of sightseeing, hiking and sunbathing, since the island has something great to offer for all types of travelers. From charming villages to the highest peak in all of Spain, Tenerife is a complex destination, which is worth exploring if you like the adventure of discovering new places when on holiday.

3 days itinerary in Tenerife (a long weekend in Tenerife)

Although it is possible to visit Tenerife in only 3 days, we would not recommend such a trip if this is your first time coming to the island.

There are so many beautiful places to see, that you will be rushed and you won’t have enough time to also enjoy the beaches and the sun.

But if you only have 3 days in Tenerife, this is what we recommend you do:

Day 1

Reserve this day for lounging in the hotel by the pool or on the beach

Depending on when you arrive, you might have an entire day, so if you are staying somewhere in Tenerife South you may want to try the closest beach. We really like Los Cristianos, so we would recommend a walk here as well, maybe go over in the evening for dinner or some cocktails after dinner.

Take your time to relax on the first day, enjoy the sun and the ocean, so you will have your batteries charged for a day of sightseeing.

Day 2

Road trip through Teide National Park, then visit San Cristobal de La Laguna

If there’s one thing you shouldn’t miss while in Tenerife, it’s a visit to Teide National Park to see the highest peak in Spain and the volcano that is the symbol of Tenerife.

There are many miradors (viewpoints) where you can stop and admire the landscape if you are traveling on your own rental car.

See our guide for driving in Tenerife and top scenic routes

You can also take the cable car up to 3555m, from where you have several hikes that you can do, including the hike up to the peak of Mount Teide (for this you will need a permit).

BOOK ONLINEMount Teide: Tour with Cable Car Ticket

  • Includes transport from the North and South of the island
  • Official guide
  • Includes Teide cable car ticket
  • Discover the most visited National Park in Spain

If you’re coming from the south when visiting Teide National Park, then you have 2 options to leave: either go towards La Orotava or towards San Cristobal de La Laguna.

Although we love La Orotava and we would recommend a visit there as well, in this case, we recommend taking the route to San Cristobal de La Laguna, the old capital of Tenerife.

Day 3

Drive to Masca, then visit Garachico – the most charming village in Tenerife

Although the drive to Masca can be scary for many drivers, we’ve done it several times in various rental cars and we’ve loved it every time.

There are lots of hairpin turns on the way, so if you are not a confident driver you can take an organized excursion and just enjoy the views, without being bothered to drive and to find a parking place when you arrive (which can prove to be a difficult task).

After Masca head over to Garachico and if you’re visiting in summer, make sure to go to the rock pools where you can enjoy swimming in the most famous natural swimming pools in Tenerife.

Playa La Pinta (Puerto Colon), which we recommend that you include in your Tenerife itinerary

One week in Tenerife – 7 days itinerary to visit the largest Canary Island

7 days is the minimum number of days we would recommend to book when traveling to Tenerife with the intention of visiting the island.

We will continue our suggestions for itineraries from where we left off above when you only had 3 days on the island.

Day 4

A full day at Siam Park, the best water park in Spain

Siam Park is one of the top attractions in Tenerife and if you have a week here, we would advise spending a day here to relax after a few days of sightseeing.

It is great for children, as well as for adults, so everyone will find something to do there.

We love Siam Park and we go there every time we visit the island, even if only for the lazy river and the wave pool, which makes for a very relaxing day, if you are not one for more thrilling rides.

Day 5

A day in Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz is the largest town and resort on the north coast in Tenerife and it’s worth visiting for a day.

In Puerto de la Cruz you will also find Loro Parque, but visiting this park will take up an entire day if you decide to go.

In Puerto de la Cruz you can go to the famous Playa Jardin, a lovely black sand beach, or to Lagos Martianez, a pool complex with saltwater, designed by Cesar Manrique.

Then visit the old streets, the walk on the promenade and go to the Botanical Garden, which is the only one in Tenerife (unless you also count the Palmetum in Santa Cruz).

Days 6 & 7

Relax on the beach and enjoy the Tenerife sun

Any trip to Tenerife would not be complete if you would not take the time to enjoy the beach, the ocean, and the sun.

We would recommend exploring more than one beach if you are staying in Tenerife South, since it is easy to travel between them, either by bus or you can even walk.

Playa del Duque is lovely (pictured at the start if the article), Playa Puerto Colon is great for families with kids but the one we love the most in the south is by far Playa Las Vistas in Los Cristianos.

So how many days do you need to discover Tenerife properly?

We’ve spent several months in Tenerife over the course of the years and we still feel like we have many more places to discover.

With so many activities at your choice, you can’t be bored in Tenerife even if you are an active person (just like we are) and you don’t really care for the beach.

See when is the best time to go to Tenerife

With at least 10 days or 2 weeks, you can relax more and also visit the island at a more relaxed pace, which is how the Canaries should be discovered.

So if you have the time and the possibility, go for at least 7 or 10 days in Tenerife, which will give you the opportunity to combine sightseeing with sunbathing. And if you love it and you wish for more…then it means you’ve got the Tenerife bug (just like us) and you will need to come back for more.

The Perfect One Week Tenerife Itinerary and Guide

Tenerife absolutely blew me away. Climbing Spain’s highest mountain was a great way to stay active and break up journeys in the car. I think we explored every corner of this island and it was the perfect way to spend a week. Whether you like hiking, sunbathing, or road trips, there’s something in Tenerife for everyone.

Tenerife One Week Itinerary and Guide

Tenerife is an absolutely incredible place. It was a destination I wanted to explore, but I didn’t think I’d love it as much as I did. It’s an amazingly beautiful island and the kind of place you can return to plenty of times, discovering something new each visit. This is my one week guide to Tenerife – it’s customisable so you can alter it to best fit your style of travel. Let’s get on with it!

The Best Time To Visit Tenerife

The weather in Tenerife is pretty nice all year round! The high season is in August, when its warmest, but it’s lovely in the earlier summer months. I’ve visited in January and while it wasn’t hot enough to run around in a bikini (although others did!) loads of people were in the water! January is a great time to go hiking in Tenerife. It’s warm enough to be outside but cool enough that you don’t overheat. You can check the live weather here.

Things to Do in Tenerife

While Tenerife may be known as the UK’s party destination, there’s so much more to offer than just beach strips and bars! Tenerife is becoming more and more recognised for its incredible outdoor opportunities- biking, hiking, and lounging on the beach are some of the most popular activities. There’s also a waterpark called Siam Park if you want to be active in the water (but not in the ocean). There’s honestly so much to do- I highly recommend renting a car and doing a tour of the island.

There are so many places to drive to in Tenerife – Costa Adeje, the Masca Valley, the base of Mount Teide, and Santa Cruz, the biggest city in Tenerife. The public transportation in Tenerife is lacking, so if you’d like to see everything, a car is your best bet. While it’s certainly possible to get around by public transport, I highly recommend renting a car so you can fit everything into your trip.

We absolutely loved the small towns in Tenerife. One of my favourite places to go was Garachico, the ultimate place to relax after hiking Teide. I only discovered Garachico through a work opportunity, but I absolutely loved it and it was one of the highlights. I later learned that its main draw is stunning natural pools. Read more about it in the itinerary portion of this page.

While everyone floods to the popular tourist beaches, there are so many small beaches that are overlooked! Sometimes you’ll be able to find a spot all to yourself- you just have to explore a little!

General Tenerife Tips

  • Pack a sweater and jeans (or something warm) – it’s can get chilly up in the hillsides and at the top of Teide (if you cable car or hike up)
  • Rent a car! Car rental cost us something like 20 euros a day and the car let us explore so many parts of the island. Public transportation isn’t the greatest so this was invaluable!
  • Don’t just stay in Santa Cruz or Playa de las Americas! There’s SO much to see! Explore the small parts of the island.
  • Bring either sneakers or solid hiking boots – Tenerife may be known for its beaches, but it’s trails are amazing.

Our One Week in Tenerife Itinerary (and Where to Stay in Tenerife)

A lot of you guys asked us how we packed so much in with only a week’s time! It was a lot of moving around, but BOY was it worth it. Here’s what we did (and what I highly recommend)! Here’s how to spend 1 week in Tenerife:

Day 1: Anaga

Today’s the day—you’ve arrived in beautiful Tenerife. Pick up your rental car and drive up to Anaga. We stayed at this hostel, which is the perfect home base for beautiful hiking around the area. Once you check in, go for a walk and explore the mountain areas. Our favourite was just up a little path above the hostel- the view was gorgeous! There are loads of trails around this area and I highly recommend exploring them. You can even walk down to the beaches if that’s something you fancy, but be warned, it’s a long hike back up!

Things to Do in Anaga:
  • Hiking! Explore all of the trails around (bring snacks and water!)
  • Rural de Anaga Park is where some trails lead to, but note that you may need to get a permit to go in.

Day 2: San Cristobal de La Laguna to Teide National park

Check out after breakfast and head down the mountain. We drove to Benijo to see the sea, but it’s quite a drive away. After that, if you choose to drive down, drive to La Laguna, an adorable, colourful little town with some great food and beautiful palm trees. You could stop for a coffee and sit out near the cathedral, or you could grab some lunch (which is what we did). We ate at La Bourmet and got a slider platter- they were all delicious.

This is also a great place to buy food for the upcoming days. Alternatively, if you aren’t into moving hotels as often as we did, I think this would be a great home base to explore the island from.

Drive along the mountain road until you get to Parador De las Cañadas del Teide Hotel. It’s right in Teide National Park at the foot of the mountain itself. This is a great place to stop for walking trails. It’s in a stunning location.

Things to Do in La Laguna
  • The Museum of History and Anthropology of Tenerife
  • Sit out under the palm trees and have a coffee with Iglesia de la Concepcion in view
  • Wander through the old town and window shop
  • Get the slider platter at La Bourmet (yum)

Day 3: Climb Mount Teide for Tomorrow’s Sunrise

Climb Teide! This was the highlight of our trip. It isn’t technically difficult and it’s a stunning hike. You can find out how to do so in this detailed post. You’ll be spending the night at the refugio. Bring the food you bought the day prior to make sure you have dinner.

Day 4: Sunrise on Mount Teide & Relaxing in Garachico

Reach the peak of the volcano for sunrise, and then start a long walk down (or a cable car ride). Once you’ve made it back, start the drive to Garachico. Garachico is the most relaxing place to celebrate reaching the summit of Teide. We loved our stay at this boutique hotel and absolutely loved sitting in the sauna.

There’s a small little tapas bar in town called Los Pinos. We devoured everything! Walk along the seaside with a gelato in hand, then turn in for the night.

Garachico is also known for it’s natural pools. In the summertime, I highly recommend jumping in— the Piscinas Naturales El Caleton are BEAUTIFUL.

Things to Do in Garachico
  • Have tapas at Los Pinos
  • Visit the Castillo de San Miguel (castle)
  • Iglesia de Santa Ana (beutiful old church)
  • Plaza de la Libertad
  • Relax, relax, relax! This town is small and very charming.
  • Rent bicycles and cycle through the town with a view of the ocean
  • Piscinas Naturales El Caleton

Day 5: Drive Through the Masca Valley to Los Cristianos

Have an incredible breakfast at the hotel, and then start driving over to the South of the island. Definitely drive through the Masca Valley, hit Masca, and walk around that area- it’s stunning. I loved the steep terraces and the view of the ocean. It looked like a postcard.

That night, we stayed in a sleepy little village called Vilaflor. It’s absolutely adorable, but you don’t need to spend a whole day there. I’d instead maybe have a second day in Garachico to relax or swim in the natural pools, or I’d head to Los Cristianos for a night.

We stopped in Los Cristianos for lunch. It’s very touristy and not really our vibe, but I bet it would be an excellent place for a beach day, drinks, or meeting other travellers!

Things to Do in Los Cristianos
  • Playas de las Américas – this is the beach scene (and where a LOT of all inclusive resorts are)
  • Playa de las Vistas – beach with lots of food and sunbeds
  • Siam Park – waterpark with lots of waterslides
  • Eat! This is where we found some cheap three course meals (cheap, but we preferred the quality at both the restaurants in La Laguna and Garachico

Day 6: Visit Less-Touristy Medano and Get Some Beach Time

To escape the crowds and go slightly off the beaten track, drive on over to Medano. There’s a beautiful seaside area where you can hang out, grab food, gelato, or drinks. We stayed at the Aloe Vera Shared House, which was about half an hour away and very relaxing! It’s right next to the beach and it’s absolutely lovely.

Things to Do in Medano:
  • Cueve Del Hermano Pedro (religious cave)
  • Have lunch along the port
  • Surfing
  • Diving

Day 7: Say Goodbye

Soak up that last bit of Tenerife island magic and head on over to the airport. Islands in Europe, like Tenerife, are pretty special.

Looking for a Tenerife Itinerary 5 Days?

Can’t spend a week in Tenerife? Don’t worry! There’s a lot you can do in a shorter amount of time. I’d modify the above Tenerife 7 day itinerary to what suits your preferences.

If the beach isn’t your top priority, I’d skip out on Medano. While it’s a cute town, it’s definitely meant for relaxing. Don’t miss Teide! That was honestly such a highlight. You could also miss Anaga if you’re planning on including Teide in your five days.

If you really aren’t an outdoorsy person, skip Teide and do everything else! You’ll have lots of time to explore Tenerife’s best beaches and coastal towns.

Here’s what I’d rank as must visits and places to see if you have the time

Must Visits

  • Teide (if you like hiking)
  • La Laguna
  • Masca Valley
  • Anaga (if you like hiking and have time for both Teide and Anage)

If You Have Time…

  • San Cristobal
  • Garachico (lovely but small)
  • Medano
  • Anaga (if you are not too keen on hiking or if you only have time for either Teide or Anaga)

What are my top picks? I love to hike, so Teide was a must for me! I also really enjoyed Garachico and driving around all of the incredible places Tenerife has on offer. We spent about a week in Tenerife, and that was a great amount of time for a first trip.

          Last minute deals in Tenerife

The largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife is located in the Atlantic Ocean. The nature of formation is volcanic, but the last time a volcano erupted here in the distant 1909 year. There are thermal and mineral springs, and the beaches are enriched with volcanic sand, which has a beneficial effect on health. That is why holidays in Tenerife are tempting for tourists.

The main attractions are the incredible views that open from the hills. Scenes from the movie Clash of the Titans were filmed here. The Spanish oasis will appeal to lovers of water sports, it is also suitable for families, couples, youth groups and single seekers of natural harmony.

          Where to go on holiday?

Tours to the island of Tenerife are suitable for any type of holiday. A variety of resorts gives everyone the opportunity to find their place in the sun. If you are attracted by luxury hotels and nightclubs, then you should visit the resort of Playa de las Americas, in the southwest of the island, 20 km from the airport.

Quiet family vacation away from the noise of shopping centers, bars and discos offers the resort of Los Cristianos, on the south coast. Here you will find shops, restaurants, cafes, sports grounds.

But for water activities, the resort of El Medano is suitable. It is windy here almost the whole year, which is an ideal condition for surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing. It is located in the southeastern part of the island.

The resort of Playa Paraiso invites you to relax in the southwest, another place for carefree enjoyment of the ocean and the sun of warm Spain. There are several 4 * and 5 * hotels, right on the coast and with their own beaches. The rest of the hotels are built a little further from the ocean.

Budget vacation offers the village of Ten-Bel. There are no 5-star complexes here, the full board system is also popular. This is a great place for an inexpensive vacation with the whole family, especially if you are lucky enough to “catch” last-minute tours in Tenerife with a flight.

Conditionally the island is divided by mountains into southern and northern parts. The south has a dry and warm climate. It is humid in the north, so there is a rich flora and fauna. You can see all the delights of the northern part of the island by visiting the resort of Puerto de la Cruz. Here is the Archaeological Museum, which has been open since 1953 years old and offers everyone who wants to get acquainted with the history of the archipelago, plunge into the culture of the ancient tribe of Guanches.

          The best time to relax

“Last minute trips to Tenerife” is a relative concept. Unlike Thailand or Bali, Tenerife does not have a rainy season. The air temperature is kept within +20–26 °C in winter and +24–29 °C in summer. The cost of a vacation depends more on the infrastructure of the resort, the category of the hotel, the number of excursions.

Prices increase during holidays. So, to to drink a tour in Tenerife for two on Valentine’s Day or March 8 will be more expensive than going on vacation in early autumn. You can look at and profitably buy a ticket to Tenerife on the website poehalisnami. ua. Also, in the office of the travel agency, managers will select the direction for your vacation, taking into account all your preferences.

Guide Alexander, a great storyteller who showed us the most beautiful places on the island, literally in one day. The tour itself was very interesting and informative! The impression is wonderful and the places themselves that our guide showed us are very beautiful.
Thank you so much for solving the problem with the prepayment, because it was not possible to make the prepayment on our own. We were contacted by Tripster support and the guide himself and we were offered an alternative and simpler payment method, for which you once again, many thanks!
We are very satisfied and will definitely recommend to friends and family!

I recommend Alexander, we went on a sightseeing tour with him. Excellent organization – everything was on time, everything was interesting, all our wishes were taken into account. Alexander talks about the history and plants of the island, answers questions of interest.
The next day they took another boat trip through it – everything was just as impeccable.

Three days in Tenerife | Road routes

Day 1. El Teide, La Orotava and Isla Baja

          El Teide and La Orotava

This route starts from Mount Teide, where several roads lead from the north and south. You can walk through the vast Ucanca Valley, formed from volcanic lava, and take beautiful pictures of the Roques de Garcia with the Teide in the background. Roques has an observation deck that offers a magnificent view of Las Cañadas. If you wish, you can climb to the top, but for this you need to obtain permission from the administration of the National Park. A modern and safe funicular will take you up. You will have to walk 200 meters along the trails to the top. At an altitude of 3,718 meters, impressive views open up.

North of Teide. You can start your tour by visiting La Orotava, a city with many attractions. Be sure to visit the churches of the Immaculate Virgin Mary and San Agustin, the Casa de los Balcones and the city hall. Here you can also buy products of the island’s traditional handicrafts.

          Isla Baja

This area is located in the northwestern part of the island and is home to charming towns such as Los Silos, Garachico and Buenavista del Norte. The road that passes through them will lead you to the Rural de Teno Park. This unique place will surely amaze you with its amazing landscapes.

Day 2. Santa Cruz, La Laguna, Las Teresitas and Laurel Forest

          Santa Cruz and La Laguna

Santa Cruz and La Laguna are two completely different cities that end in ends connected. Lively and cheerful city of La Laguna and more majestic and solemn Santa Cruz. Be sure to visit the Auditorio Concert Hall and walk the streets next to the Church of the Immaculate Virgin Mary in Santa Cruz.

In the city of La Laguna, it is worth seeing the historic center, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site at 1999 year. The main attractions of the city: the Cathedral, the tower of the Church of the Immaculate Virgin Mary and the Historical Museum of Tenerife.

          Teresitas Beach

This beach is located 5 kilometers from the center of Santa Cruz. There you will find the fishing village of San Andrés, which is full of small restaurants that serve excellent fried fish, squid and other seafood. The interior of the restaurants may not be distinguished by sophistication, but here you will be served fresh and tasty food prepared in the traditional way. You also don’t have to worry about your appearance. Vacationers usually come here to dine right in flip-flops and swimsuits, then to return to the beach and continue to sunbathe.

The golden sands of Teresitas Beach stretch for several kilometers along the coast. So you can take long walks along the coast. Many tourists spend the whole day here, enjoying the calm sea and the rustle of palm leaves, which are gently caressed by a light sea breeze.

          Laurel forest

From Teresitas beach you can easily reach the Rural de Anaga Park. On the way, you will have breathtaking views of the ocean. You are heading to one of the most ancient laurel forests on the planet. This is a unique natural area where many species of animals and plants live, which you will not find anywhere else.

Day 3 Whale Watching Los Gigantes and Masca

          Whale Watching

Several cetacean colonies live in the clear waters of the south of Tenerife. Recently, whale watching has become one of the favorite activities of tourists visiting Tenerife. This excursion will surely make a lasting impression on you, because the world in which the whales live is incredibly beautiful.

You can watch whales throughout the year (which is possible in only a few places on the planet), and they live only three miles from the coast. To do this, you need to sign up for an excursion on one of the boats that depart daily from Los Cristianos, Puerto Colon and Los Gigantes.

          Los Gigantes Rocks

These giant rocks are located on the seashore and amaze with their size. They reach 600 meters in height. This is one of the main natural treasures of Santiago del Teide; and the second is the beach of Playa de la Arena with its azure waters. This is one of the most beautiful and impressive places on the island. Here you can swim while enjoying the view of La Gomera.

          Mask

Accessible from Santiago del Teide via TF-436, this small village is hidden in a deep ravine and is a favorite destination for hikers and wildlife enthusiasts.

El mayor Parque Temático de Cactus de toda Europa!

!El mayor Parque Temático de Cactus de toda Europa!

    Bienvenido a Cactualdea Park!
