Try to limit exposure between 10am and 4pm. Apply broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every few hours, even if it’s cloudy, or more frequently after sweating or swimming, and wear UV-blocking sunglasses too, and bear in mind that bright surfaces, such as sand and water increase UV exposure.

As per usual, you’re probably sitting at work rn wondering when and where you can go on holiday. Asap. And you’ve probably done the usual thing of scrolling through bucket list destinations before having that *annoying* realisation that you’re not quite as flush as you’d need to be to go on a Kardashian style trip to Turks and Caicos. Rude.
Step forward, this shiny new data from The Post Office. Their annual report has revealed the cheapest holiday destinations for 2022, based on eight tourist staples; the cost of a three-course evening meal for two with wine, a cup of coffee, a bottle of beer, a Coca-Cola, a glass of wine, a large bottle of water, sun cream and insect repellent. They used data from tourist boards and tour operators to compare average prices from 36 destinations across the world to determine the cheapest overall holiday destination. See you poolside!

If you’re after some pocket-friendly sight-seeing, then Bolivia is the place to go (obviously you just need the flights to get there!). (Hot tip: fly into Santa Cruz for cheaper international flights!)

With the value of the lira working in our favour, Turkey is a must-visit in 2023. Plus, some apartment rentals are looking to start from around £290 for the month of June.

Getty Images
Marrakech’s more mellow and affordable cousin, Fez should definitely be on you radar if you want to have an authentic Moroccan holiday at a fraction of the price. Aequora Lanzarote Suites Hotel (Lanzarote, Canary Islands (Spain))
Lanzarote, the fourth largest island of the Canary Islands, located off the coast of Africa, surprises and attracts with its unusual landscape and color contrasts. In 1730-1736, Lanzarote was shaken by a six-year-long volcanic eruption that irreversibly changed both the island and the everyday life of its inhabitants. A large amount of fertile land and settlements were buried under an abundant layer of lava, part of the territory was covered with a thick layer of dust.
A powerful force of nature has thus created an amazing view and incredible contrasts that delight everyone who comes to Lanzarote. In some places on the island, it may seem as if you are on the moon: craters and caves of volcanic origin rise here. There are many unusual black rocks that rinse the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean. But here, a few kilometers away, there are also long white sandy beaches, some of which are marked with the Blue Flag. They are ready to receive tourists all year round. Along the coast, the cities and towns are rich in heritage from the time when, due to volcanoes, the life of the island belonging to Spain was not different. Restaurants, cafes, hotels and shops are located in these towns in the shade of palm trees, and life is seething.
Lanzarote is a small island. The length of the island from south to north is 60 km, from the western to eastern coasts a little more than 20 km. The coastline is about 213 km, most of it is covered with rocks. The climate of Lanzarote is similar to that of North Africa. Warmth and sun pamper the island all year round. In January and February, the air temperature during the day reaches an average of 22 degrees, at night it drops to 14 degrees. From June to August, the thermometer rises to an average of 29 degrees, and sometimes almost up to 40 degrees. The water temperature ranges from 17 to 24 degrees. The sun shines on the island 300 days a year, and rain is a rare guest, most often appearing only in November – March.
Lanzarote doesn’t have very lush greenery, only palm trees, olive trees and cacti. However, in the central part of the island, for example, in the La Geria area, the locals have found a way to grow the grapes from which Lanzarote’s Malvasia wine is made. In order to accumulate moisture and protect the grapes from the wind, each plant sits in a hole, the depth and diameter of which reaches several meters, enclosed by a semicircular stone fence (zoco). The oldest wine cellar on the island, El Grifo (18th century), still produces 400-600 thousand bottles of wine per year. It also has a wine museum. Lanzarote is also a supplier of fish and goat cheese, and salt has long been mined in the south of the island.
The island will appeal to those who are looking not only for a relaxing holiday by the blue ocean, but also for a lot of interesting, unusual adventures. This is a great place for family holidays, couples. There are many different places to visit and monuments on the island – many of them were created by the famous architect of the island, Cesar Manrique. It is difficult to find a place on the island in the improvement of which he would not take part.
The Atlantic wind in Lanzarote creates excellent conditions for water activities, warm water allows you to enjoy swimming, diving, surfing and windsurfing, kite surfing, etc. Fishing is also popular on the island. Many resorts are convenient for cycling, walking, hiking or playing golf, for which the weather here is favorable all year round.

Arrecife
Located in the center of the east coast of the island, Arrecife is the largest city of Lanzarote and its capital, as well as a financial and cultural center founded in the 19th century. It became the capital in 1852. Currently, more than half of all the inhabitants of the island live here.
Arrecife has long been an important trading point of the island. Guests of the city notice this, as there are many shopping centers, specialized shops, souvenir and handicraft shops. Various goods of local artisans are offered, and even those imported due to more favorable conditions applied to the island are sold at fairly low prices.
Arrecife also attracts tourists with its coast, which is full of islands and reefs formed by lava flows. You can admire them while walking along the alleys. Witnesses of the history of the city and the island are two fortresses. One of them – Castillo de San Gabriel (Castillo San Gabriel) – rises on a tiny rocky island, which is connected to the coast by a drawbridge. Exactly where the main metropolitan shopping streets Leon and Castillo (Leon y Castillo) end. The bridge is decorated with two towers, on top of which there is a cannonball each. This fort was built by King Philip II to protect himself from pirates sailing from North Africa. Another city fortress, Castillo de San Jose, had the same purpose. Today it houses the Museum of Modern Art.
Another of the most visited sites is the Charo de San Gines. It is a lake formed by inflowing sea water, surrounded by fishermen’s houses. Next to it stands the main city church of San Gines. A particularly amazing view nearby opens in the evening, when the lake is illuminated by the setting sun.
Fire Mountains, Timanfaya
After volcanic eruptions lasting six years, and another blow in 1824, part of the island in the northwest became an unrecognizable place filled with lava and pulsing with heat. To protect it, the Timanfaya National Park, also called the fiery mountains, was created. This is the most visited place in Lanzarote, attracting about a million people every year. You can explore Timanfaya on the buses of the park, it is forbidden to travel on foot or with your own transport. And it’s not recommended. At a depth of only 13 m, the temperature is about 600 degrees. The network of roads among the rocks, which in some places reach an impressive size of several meters, was formed by the architect César Manrique. The surface of the earth resembles the moon – it is a colorful, hard-covered desert covered with petrified lava. It is estimated that now more than 30 volcanoes rise in the park. At the end of the path, at the highest point of the island, is the El Diablo restaurant, where dishes are cooked using heat rising from the depths of the earth. Park officials demonstrate how unusually hot the ground is under their feet: poured water into a pipe dug into the ground turns into a geyser, dry grass thrown into a small hole ignites. The park also offers another impressive entertainment – a camel tour. At 1993 this park is included in the UNESCO heritage list.
Jameos del Agua
In the sixth decade of the last century, Cesar Manrique decided to create a unique tourist attraction. Near one of the lava caves (Jameo Chico) extending to the northeast, he built a staircase down and around a small natural lake in the rock equipped with an impressive bar and restaurant, sometimes even called the most beautiful nightclub in the world. The restaurant offers tourists not only to sit down for a while, but also to spend the evening on the dance floor to the sounds of Spanish music. True, it is not the cheapest on the island. The water of the lake and the surrounding reservoirs is very transparent, only blind albino crabs that live on this island, which have become the symbol of Jameos del Agua, are visible in it. Next to the cave-restaurant, the architect built a modern villa with a very cozy garden. Jameos del Agua is located near one of the most impressive and longest caves in the world, Los Verdes, which was formed 4,000 years ago by an erupting volcano. Under the ground here stretches a tunnel of 6 km. For many centuries, such tunnels for the inhabitants of Lanzarote were a refuge from the excesses of pirates, and since 1964 he is open to tourists. For those who are curious, this miracle of nature can be viewed accompanied by guides.
Cactus garden
The Cactus Garden (Jardin de Cactus) is a good example of how well architecture can fit into the landscape. Cesar Manrique, who left many traces of his talent in Lanzarote, the designed garden captivates with an interesting design: winding paths with leading steps deeper into the garden. Symbolically, it is very similar to one of the region’s many craters. On the territory of 5,000 sq. m in total grows more than 7,200 specimens of 1,100 species of cacti from such distant and remote places as Peru, Mexico, Chile, USA, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar, Morocco and, of course, the Canary Islands themselves. Prickly and non-thorny cacti are of various sizes and shapes. Nearby there is a beautiful windmill, where gofio is still being prayed – barley and corn flour, which was the main focus of the cuisine already in the time of the ancient local residents of the Guanches.

Best time to visit Madeira – Summary
Best month to visit Madeira
Madeira is enjoyable all year long, but if I had to pick one month as the best months, I would choose: JUNE because of:
Great temperatures,
Hardly any rain,
Before the Summer crowds,
Flowers still blooming,
Good whale activity,
Morning clouds of great sunrises.
Best time to visit Madeira – Criteria
If you don’t want to read the entire article, here is a summary depending on what you are looking for:
Weather, Rain – The driest months are June, July and August, the wettest months are October to mid-April.
Weather, temperatures – Summer temperatures are around 24°C at water level, and also hot in the mountains. Some days, when wind blows from the Sahara, temperatures can climb above 30°C Winter daytime temperatures are around 20°C on the lower parts of the island (it can be cold in the mountains).
Swimming – Best time to swim in the ocean is from June to October with sea temperature averaging 23°C
Crowds – September to October tend to be the quieter months on the island. But there is a general flow of tourists all year-long. The busier months are July and August. Christmas time and winter holidays are also popular times.
Price – Prices are of course higher when the island is the most crowded – Summer
Flowers – Spring of course, and the flower festival in Funchal takes place in May.
Whales – The best time to see whales is in Summer (there are more of them).
Hiking – May, June, September and October – temperature are great for hiking – and, since many hiking paths are narrow, it is better to avoid the Summer crowds

Best times to go to Madeira for WEATHER, crowds…
When is the best time to visit Madeira for great weather?
Overall, the climate can be described as meditteran-subtropical, offering an “eternal spring“. It is rarely particularly cold or particularly hot. At sea level, temperatures are comfortable all year long. Just know that:
Some days in Summer, the wind can blow from the Sahara and create over 30°C temperatures
in Winter, the temperatures are pleasant at sea level, but can be cold in the mountains (with snow sometimes)
Because of the mountains in the middle of the island, there are different climates. So if you don’t like the weather where you are , check out the other side of the island.
The north of the island has more rainfall and, therefore, lush vegetation.
The south is drier and offers more hours of sunshine.
Length of the days & amount of sunshine
in Winter – 10 hours of daylight with sunrise around 7am to 8m and sunset from 6pm to 8pm
in Summer – 12 hours of daylight with sunrise around 7am to 8m and sunset from 8pm to 9pm
Because of the mountains, blankets of clouds can appear anytime of the year. They are very frequent in the mornings in June and July. The South receives more sunshine than the North.
Rain in Madeira
Rainfall is concentrated from October to mid-April. In Summer, rains are quite rare, especially on the South side of the island.

Best time to visit Madeira for FLOWERS
Spring explosion
Madeira is sometimes referred to as the ‘floating garden of the Atlantic’. Thanks to the combination of the Location and the mountains in the middle of the island, Madeiras has a lush, varied and colorful flora.
You can see lush vegetation and beautiful flowers all year-round, however the full bloom and color explosion is, of course, during Spring time.
Plus, during that time, you can have a chance to be traveling during the Madeira Flower Festival, which includes:
performances of folk groups,
construction of beautiful floral carpets,
music and concerts…
Special flowers to find
And if you are after specific flowers, know that, for example:
Strelitzia: Madeira’s signature flower, “the bird of paradise” – grows throughout the island year-round.
Poinsettia: Red flower – Best seen from October to February.
Sword Aloe: best seen from October to December.
Pink Ball Trees: The flowers bloom from December to March.
Jacaranda Trees: with pretty purple flowers, bloom in April and May.
Best time to travel to Madeira for WHALES and dolphins
Overall best time to go dolphin- and whale-watching in Madeira
Many species of dolphins and whales visit the island during different seasons. But as general rules:
You can see whales and dolphins all year,
There are always at least 2 or 3 species of whales around,
Tours are running year round,
The highest quantity of species is from April to September,
In Summer, the dolphins generally gather closer to the coast, in more shallow waters
There is a much bigger chance of seeing dolphins than whales (they spend a lot of time underwater)
Learn more in my article about Whales and Dolphins in Madeira.
Species of dolphins & best months
The most common species of dolphins you will see in the waters surrounding Madeira are the Bottlenose dolphins. They live there year round.
Other species depending on the season:
Common dolphin – January to July
Striped Dolphin – February to April and July to November
Atlantic Spotted Dolphin – March to October
Rough-toothed Dolphin – May to September
Risso’s Dolphin – May to October
…
Best time to visit Madeira for HIKING
The island of Madeira offers some wonderful hiking opportunities:
Over volcanic cliffs,
Along levadas (irrigation systems) surrounded by lush vegetation,
On top of the mountains,
. ..
Check out my article with the best hikes and levada walks in Madeira.
You can hike all year round, but here are a few things to be aware of to make your decision:
In Summer, temperature can raise quite high in the afternoon – you should start hiking early morning
Most hikes have narrow pathways and can have hikers in both directions (many levada walks are return hikes, not loops). Therefore, in Summer they can feel crowded.
In Winter, the mountains can be a lot colder and occasionally have snow
In Winter, there is more rain and the waterfalls will be fuller.
Therefore, the best months to hike in Madeira are in the shoulder seasons – May, June, September, and October, unless you want to see the waterfalls in full force.

How is Madeira at Christmas?
What is Madeira like at Christmas? Madeira is a popular destination for Christmas. Christmas and the New Year are celebrated at the same time everywhere in the “Christian world”.
Weather conditions
Temperatures at sea level are very pleasant, around 19/20°C during the day. Water temperature is low (around 17°C), so it is not the best time for swimming. But the weather is pleasant for walking and exploring the whole coast of the island.
Christmas trees & decorations
Because of the mild climate, you won’t find many traditional pine trees, but mostly artificial trees. They are traditionally decorated with balls, Christmas Lights, snowflakes, bows, wreaths, etc.
Madeirans love decorating for every festival and events. You will see a lot of decorations, especially in Funchal.
If you walk around, you will also see many Nativity scenes in the form of a staircase or in a rock-shaped form (like a cave). Locals call them “lapinha”. It is often a small altar of three hauls, covered with a red and a white lace tablecloths. At the top is a small statue of the Baby Jesus, and on the other steps the shepherd, other figures and fruits.
Around Christmas events
Madeira has several traditions around Christmas:
The Childbirth masses, a set of nine religious ceremonies (called “novenas”), taking place at dawn in parishes throughout the island. They happen between December, 16th and Christmas Eve. They are often followed by singing gatherings.
On December 23rd, there is a Market night in Funchal at the Mercado dos Lavradores – where people shop for fruits and flowers
On December 31st, there is a special fireworks show that entered the Guinness book of records as the largest show in the world (from 2006 to 2012)
Christmas food
Of course, no tradition is complete without food specialities:
Madeira Honey cake – can be bought all year round, but linked to Christmas
Christmas in Madeira is filled with sweets and the cookies
“Carne Vinha D’Alhos”
. ..

Best time to travel to Madeira and more – FAQs
Best time to visit Funchal?
Funchal is a great destination all year round. There is no difference between Funchal and the rest of the island. This entire article applies. Funchal is on the South Side of the island, so it has more sun and is protected from most winds.
Is Madeira worth visiting?
Whatever the time of the year, Madeira is a worthy destination with mountains, beaches, cliffs and volcanic features. The landscapes are simply breathtaking. Check out my selection of 40 pictures to get an idea.
What is the hottest month in Madeira?
August is normally the hottest month in Madeira with temperature around 25 and 26°C during the day (but they can go above 30°C when the dry wind from the Sahara is blowing).
How many days do you need to visit Madeira?
The island is not that big. From Funchal you can reach almost all destinations within 1h, thanks to the many tunnels. The minimum to visit Madeira is a week, but I really think that 10 days is a better timeframe. With only one week, you would have to rush your experience or make some choices of places to see. I think the best length for your Madeira trip is between 10 days and 2 weeks (and more if you want to explore the island of Porto Santo as well).
Don’t visit for a long weekend. The island is far from Europe and landings can be delayed because of wind. Learn more on my 42 Madeira Travel Tips.

If you feel hungry or thirsty a variety of shops, restaurants and bars are a very short walk away. The beach is medium in size but has a number of facilities available such as sun beds, showers, changing rooms and toilets. You will find calmer waters then on the other beaches as the swimming area is protected by a breakwater.
Playa de Martianez is a small beach close to a number of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops. You will battle to find a place on this beach in summer but the water provides some of the best swimming conditions in Puerto de la Cruz, and when the waves do get big it is a very popular local surf spot. You will find sun loungers for hire and a lifeguard on duty.
Bars and Restaurants
Tucan Restaurant is a German restaurant, decorated in the country house style, in the old centre of Puerto de la Cruz. The restaurant has views of charming cobbled streets but the food is the real star here. Tucan is run by a husband and wife team with the husband as the chef and the wife as front of house. They are known as some of the friendliest people in the town. You can chose from a menu of standard German fare such as Eisbein to some interesting international dishes such as langoustines in a mango and curry sauce. They have a small but well chosen wine list with some wines available in a carafe. You will find them at Calle Sebastian Padron Acosta 1.
El Mana provides an interesting diversion from the standard Canarian fare in Puerto de la Cruz. This restaurant features a seasonal menu of mostly vegetarian dishes. Here you will find interesting dishes such as pumpkin and goats cheese ravioli or molten chocolate cake with mango sorbet. The restaurant has a quirky decor scheme and a lovely outdoor seating area. They are situated a block back from the beach front in the La Ranilla district. Calle Mequinez 21

A wide-brim hat offers excellent sun protection for the eyes, ears, face, and neck. Sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection significantly reduce eye damage from sun exposure. Tightly woven, loose-fitting clothes provide additional protection from the Sun. Caution! The reflection of sand and water significantly increases the intensity of the Sun’s UV radiation.

Oceano Aparthotel Hotel (Lanzarote, Canary Islands (Spain))
The fourth largest island of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote, located off the coast of Africa, surprises and attracts with its unusual landscape and color contrasts. In 1730-1736, Lanzarote was shaken by a six-year-long volcanic eruption that irreversibly changed both the island and the everyday life of its inhabitants. A large amount of fertile land and settlements were buried under an abundant layer of lava, part of the territory was covered with a thick layer of dust. nine0003
Show more
The powerful force of nature has thus created an amazing view and incredible contrasts that delight everyone who comes to Lanzarote. In some places on the island it may seem as if you are on the moon: craters and caves of volcanic origin rise here. There are many unusual black rocks that rinse the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean. But here, a few kilometers away, there are also long white sandy beaches, some of which are marked with the Blue Flag. They are ready to receive tourists all year round. Along the coast, the cities and towns are rich in heritage from the time when, due to volcanoes, life on the Spanish island was not different. Restaurants, cafes, hotels and shops are located in these towns in the shade of palm trees, and life is seething. nine0003
The sun shines on the island 300 days a year, and rain is a rare guest, most often appearing only in November – March. nine0003
Lanzarote is also a supplier of fish and goat cheese, and salt has long been mined in the south of the island. nine0003
The island will appeal to those who are looking for not only a relaxing holiday by the blue ocean, but also a lot of interesting, unusual adventures. This is a great place for family holidays, couples. There are many different places to visit and monuments on the island – many of them were created by the famous architect of the island, Cesar Manrique. It is difficult to find a place on the island in the improvement of which he would not take part.
The Atlantic wind in Lanzarote creates excellent conditions for water activities, warm water allows you to enjoy swimming, diving, surfing and windsurfing, kitesurfing, etc. Fishing is also popular on the island. Many resorts are convenient for cycling, walking, hiking or playing golf, for which the weather here is favorable all year round. nine0003

Various goods of local artisans are offered, and even those imported due to more favorable conditions applied to the island are sold at fairly low prices. nine0003
Arrecife also attracts tourists with its coastline, which is full of islands and reefs formed by lava flows. Today it houses the Museum of Modern Art. nine0003
Another of the most visited sites is Charo de San Gines.

Puerto del Carmen, Canary Islands – August Weather
What’s the weather like in Puerto del Carmen in August
Lanzarote experiences drought conditions in August, with little if any rainfall, and as a consequence the landscape is generally dry, brown and desert-like at this time. This is the hottest month of the year, and while sea breezes help make the high temperatures more pleasant and manageable, it can be quite uncomfortable outside during the hottest part of the day.
Temperature
The average temperature in Puerto del Carmen in August is 20C, with average highs of 23C and lows of 16C. The highest ever recorded temperature in the area at this time is almost 44C. Overnight, temperatures are unlikely to fall significantly and it should remain, on average around 20C to 21C. On Lanzarote as a whole the average temperature is 25C, with average highs of 29C and lows of 21C.
Hot air blown from the Sahara can also make temperatures feel significantly warmer than the average. The other Canary Islands are likely to experience even hotter conditions, though with some (though very little) rainfall they are generally greener and subject to less frequent droughts; the average temperature in August on Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and Fuerteventura is 24C, and they generally receive around 10mm of rainfall throughout the month.
Average Sunshine Hours and Rain
There are around 9 hours of sunshine each day, and it is very unlikely you will see any rainfall on Lanzarote at all (the rainfall average is 0mm for the month). Coastal areas will feel slightly cooler in the afternoon and evenings, when sea breezes make the temperature a little more pleasant.
Wind
However, expect strong winds up to the middle of the month on the exposed east side of the island. UV levels are extremely high in August (classified as 11), so it is advisable to take all precautions; wear a hat, sunglasses and suncream and stick to the shade during the hottest part of the day.
Average Sunshine Hours
August not only sees the hottest temperatures of the year on Lanzarote, and in Puerto del Carmen, but is peak tourism season in most resorts. The weather is perfect for sunbathing, sea temperatures are at their warmest at around 22C, and beaches are likely to very crowded.
However, despite cooling afternoon sea breezes, the heat can be very uncomfortable and this makes travelling around the island, sightseeing or outdoor sporting activities, inadvisable. If you do want to see the island or visit any of the popular tourist sites, it is best to do so outside of the hottest time of the day or on an organised excursion.
Puerto del Carmen Hotels in August
Plaza Azul is a charming hotel with a lot to offer besides the usual poolside loungers and bars. They have their own shop, selling all the necessities, an excellent restaurant and variety of games and activities. The hotel is quite small, but very close to the beach and all the amenities of the town center.
The three star Blue Sea Hotel Los Fiscos is a friendly hotel in the Old Town, just a short walk from Playa Grande. It’s located in one of the quieter areas of the town, and at the top of the hill, offers stunning views over the town and sea. There are two pools, a children’s playground and activity center, restaurant, bar and plenty of evening entertainment.
Puerto del Carmen Beach for August
There are three excellent beaches, all with Blue Flag status, in Puerto del Carmen: The Playa Grande (the most popular of the three beaches, stretches 6km and the beach shelves very gently into the sea, making it perfect for toddlers and young children), Playa Chica (a better choice for activities such as snorkelling and diving, the small beach and bay are surrounded by volcanic rock formations), and to the east, Playa Pocillos (a huge swathe of sand with bigger currents and waves, which is a popular choice for windsurfing enthusiasts). Due to stronger currents and fewer amenities, even in the summer months at peak time, Playa Pocillos is generally much less crowded.
If you feel like exploring a little further afield, check out Caletón Blanco. Rather than one beach, this is a bracelet of rather delicious tiny coves of white sand and warm rock pools on the northeast coast of the island near rzola. This area is generally much quieter than the resort beaches, as it is a little off the beaten track. The clear sapphire water also makes it a good snorkelling spot.
Bars and Restaurants
Mar Deleva in the Old Town is a lovely traditional Spanish restaurant, serving a range of Spanish and Canarian dishes. If you want to get a real feel for the local cuisine, this is the place to go. It’s a little further out than many of the other restaurants, but you should still make a reservation as tables fill up fast in the summer. They pride themselves on their fresh fish, and the seafood is very popular.
For something completely different, go for a curry at Bollywood Indian Restaurant on Avenida de Las Playas. They have a range of traditional and familiar Indian fare, and the service is really exceptional.
Just down the road, for some fabulous cocktails, try La Delicatezza Cocktail Bar. They specialise in unique drinks, and have a huge variety of different mixes on their menu.
Things to do in Puerto del Carmen in August
There are a wide variety of entertainments on offer in Puerto del Carmen. Hot temperatures and warmer seas make the summer months an excellent time to enjoy sunbathing and water sports at one of Puerto del Carmen’s lovely beaches.
If you fancy doing some shopping, and have exhausted all of Puerto del Carmen’s shops, there is a street market on the promenade every Saturday. The market usually has a range of traditional crafts, clothing, Aloe Vero products and electronics for sale, and is quite busy.
Further afield, in the center of Arecife is a small saltwater lagoon named El Charco de San Gines. The lake was the heart of the city in the 17th century and is surrounded by a promenade with great views of the pretty fishing boats and waterfront.
Or, if you are looking for something a little quieter, visit the Cactus Garden in Teguise. The Cactus Garden is a magnificent example of an integrated architectural intervention into the landscape, for which Cesar Manrique is so famous.
Alternatively, for something a little different and to learn more about the fascinating viniculture of Lanzarote, take a tour of the vineyards. The vines are protected from the elements by stone semi-circular constructions called “zocos” and roots of the plants mulched in black volcanic stone chippings (“picon”), creating a beautifully unique landscape of curved lines and symmetry; it’s completely unlike any other vineyard you’ll find in Europe, adapted as it is to meet the unique demands of Lanzarote’s arid conditions.
The island remains home to around 20 bodegas today, which are located in and around the key wine-growing regions of Masdache and La Geria. The new walking tour, devised by Lanzarote Active Club, gives visitors the opportunity to explore this rich history, as well as learn about modern day production processes.
