    Canary Islands weather August

What’s the weather like in Canary Islands in August?

The Canary Islands weather in August is hot and dry, thanks to the warm Atlantic Ocean climate. The Canary Islands of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma have lots of bright sunshine and warm temperatures in August. Rainfall is generally very low in August and it’s the second driest month of the year.

    Geographical influences

The hot temperatures of the Canary Islands in August are sometimes lowered by cool air being blown from Africa’s Sahara desert. By the time this hot air reaches the islands, it’s been cooled by the Atlantic Ocean and brings welcome relief to the islands. Islands closer to Africa, like Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, benefit the most. The skies over the Canary Islands are some of the clearest in the world because of the trade winds that blow across.

    Averages

The weather in the Canary Islands in August produces a welcoming average temperature of 24°C, but hot days can regularly reach nearly 30°C. The night time average is around 18°C, which makes sleeping quite comfortable compared to hotter resorts in mainland Europe. The humidity levels are high, at an average of 82%, so take a bottle of water when you’re exploring the islands or relaxing on the beach. The Canary Islands are the sunniest European resorts and reach a sunshine average of 13 hours in July. The average sea temperature of 23°C means you’ll love taking a dip in the ocean, with the islands in the west having slightly warmer waters. The rainfall average is just 105mm across the islands so you won’t need to take an umbrella.

Record forecast for Transatlantic Race >> Scuttlebutt Sailing News

Published on January 4th, 2023

Near perfect, record conditions are forecast for the start of the 2023 RORC Transatlantic Race as the international fleet sets to depart from the Spanish island of Lanzarote of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. With the start on January 8, weather forecasts are predicting five days or more of 20 knot plus north-easterlies for the 3,000 nm course to Grenada.

The multihull fleet will race under the MOCRA Rule and for Multihull Line Honors while the monohull fleet is divided into three IRC Classes with prize winners for each class along with overall and best Two-Handed team.

Every boat will be fitted with a satellite tracker and all teams are encouraged to send in their stories from the racecourse.

Multihull – Race Record beckons
Teams from Belgium, France, Italy, and the United States make up the high-performance multihull division. Three of this year’s multihull alumni are turbo-charged MOD70s that are capable of eclipsing the 2015 Multihull Race Record (Lloyd Thornburg’s MOD70 Phaedo3, 5 days 22 hrs 46 mins 03 secs).

Giovanni Soldini’s Multi70 Maserati (ITA) is competing for the fourth time and is the reigning multihull race champion, having taken line honors in a photo-finish last year.

MOD70 Zoulou (FRA), formerly Powerplay, is sailed by Erik Maris and has a stellar crew, including highly experienced MOD70 driver Ned Collier Wakefield and the enigmatic Loick Peyron. Frank Slootman’s American MOD70 Snowflake is skippered by US-based Kiwi Gavin Brady. Snowflake was formerly race-record holder Phaedo3 and record-holding skipper Brian Thompson is back on board for this year’s race.

Vincent Willemart’s TS42 Banzai is the fourth multihull in the division, and while the Belgium team will not be as quick as the 70-foot trimarans, they will vie for the handicap win. Banzai’s crew includes one of Belgium’s most decorated sailors, Michel Kleinjans, class winner for the Route du Rhum.

IRC Super Zero – Maxi Showdown
Four Maxis racing in IRC Super Zero are favorites to take Monohull Line Honors with the largest boat being the Swan 115 Jasi, skippered by Toby Clarke. The 21-strong crew includes top professionals Ken Read, Paul Wilcox, Mark Sadler, Andy Meiklejohn, and Mike Pammenter.

Two Volvo 70s will be racing; the Polish National Foundation’s Volvo 70 I Love Poland is skippered by Grzegorz Baranowski, with Konrad Lipski as navigator. Johannes Schwarz’s Volvo 70 Green Dragon has the youngest skipper in the race: Ireland’s Cathal Mahon from Galway. Scott Shawyer’s IMOCA 60 Canada Ocean Racing will be racing two-handed with Alan Roberts.

The dock talk among the Maxis is that weather routing software is predicting as quick as eight days, which would threaten the 2022 Monohull Race Record (100-foot Comanche skippered by Mitch Booth, 7 Days 22 hrs 01 mins 04 secs).

IRC Zero – Packed with cutting edge 50-footers
The highest rated boat in IRC Zero is the water-ballast Botin 56 Black Pearl with Stefan Jentzsch at the helm. Black Pearl’s crew, which includes Marc Lagesse, Paul Standbridge, Mitch Booth, and Peter van Niekerk, are hoping it will be third time lucky for Black Pearl. A broken bowsprit and then a dismasting scuppered the boat’s chances in the last two editions.

Arto Linnervuo’s all-Finnish team will be racing Infiniti 52 Tulikettu. Linnervuo completed the race in 2018 with his Xp-44 Xtra Staerk, but Tulikettu is on a totally different level. Weighing less than 7000kg and built with DSS side-foils, Tulikettu is capable of adrenaline-pumping speed.

Henri de Bokay’s Elliott 52 Rafale sports a canting keel, but still rates lower under IRC than Black Pearl and Tulikettu. Skippered by Philipp Kadelbach, Rafale‘s crew is mainly from Germany and amongst their recent successes includes Line Honors for the Aegean 600. Eric de Turckheim’s NMYD 54 Teasing Machine was the overall winner of the race in 2017.

Since the French team’s victory, Teasing Machine has undergone a series of modifications and was in fine form, winning the 2022 Rolex Middle Sea Race. The Teasing Machine crew includes Volvo Ocean Race winner Laurent Pages and Aymeric Chappellier, who finished on the Class40 podium for the 2019 Transat Jacques Vabre.

With a crew from Czechia and Slovakia, Miroslav Jakubcik and Marek Culen will race the smallest boat in IRC Zero – Class40 Sabre II. The co-skippers have raced against each other since childhood but have joined forces to make their first transatlantic race.

The largest boat in the class is Marie Tabarly’s 73ft ketch Pen Duick VI, which is also the oldest boat in the race. Originally built for Marie’s father Eric Tabarly for the 1973 Whitbread Round the World Race, Pen Duick VI has a great history of Transatlantic racing, including Eric winning the solo 1976 OSTAR.

Eclectic Mix – IRC One
The most wide-ranging class in the RORC Transatlantic Race features six totally different designs.

Lionel Regnier’s 58ft Philippe Briand-designed L’Esprit D’Equipe, winner of the 1985 Whitbread Round the World Race, is the largest boat. The smallest is Kate Cope’s Sun Fast 3200 Purple Mist, which will be raced Two-Handed with Claire Dresser, hoping to become the first all-women Two-Handed team to finish the RORC Transatlantic Race.

Purple Mist’s immediate competition will come from Sun Fast 3300 Sea Bear, which will be raced Two-Handed by Peter and Duncan Bacon.

Andrew Hall’s British Lombard 46 Pata Negra will be taking part in its fourth RORC Transatlantic Race. Andrew Hall’s son Sam is part of an experienced crew, including Boat Captain Chris Jackson, who confirmed that Pata Negra has reduced her sail area to be more competitive under IRC.

Pata Negra’s closest rival on IRC Rating is Laurent Courbin’s French First 53 Yagiza skippered by Philippe Falle. Global Yacht Racing’s British First 47.7 EH01 has been racing with the Royal Ocean Racing Club for many years, but this will be the first RORC Transatlantic Race.

EH01’s Irish skipper is Neil Maher, with an international crew from Canada, Germany, Great Britain and the United States. EH01 may not be the fastest boat in her class but has a symmetrical downwind sail plan, giving the tactical advantage of being able to sail a shorter distance to the finish in Grenada.

Whale and dolphin spotting onboard the Royal Delfin is one of the most popular excursions in Tenerife.

This trip departs from the harbour at Puerto Colon, where you’ll board a large catamaran staffed by experienced guides who will tell you all about local marine life and environment conservation whilst at sea. The vessel features two sections below sea level where you’ll have the chance to see some of the 19 different species of cetaceans which reside in the waters around Tenerife, including bottle nosed dolphins and pilot whales. There are three different itineraries on offer which cover different areas and lengths of time.

Segway Tour

If you’d prefer something closer to the ground, how about a Segway tour? A new and eco-friendly way to explore Tenerife, these tours leave from Playa de Las Americas where an instructor will give you some basic training on how to operate the Segway before you start your journey. There are three trips available 40 minutes, 60 minutes and 120 minutes each of which is surprisingly affordable and takes in different parts of the resort. As well as the Segway tours, this company also hires out electric bikes which you can use to explore Tenerife at your own pace.

Dates for the diary

Generally, August 14-15th marks the Festival of the Virgin of Candelaria, the patron saint of the Canary Islands. The festivities last for two days and encompass a wide array of religious and traditional events taking place in the town of Canelaria, located in Tenerife’s north east coast.

As the name suggests, this location is subject to wind waves that they favor sports such as kitesurfing and windsurfing.

Then leave the car in the nearby parking and reach the first entrance of this long beach, that is Risco del Paso, tourists appreciate it very much, it is considered one of the most beautiful of the whole island of Fuerteventura. in the warm embrace of the passing summer

The unique climate of Spanish Tenerife has been surprising and attracting travelers for many years. It is incredibly clean, spring-like fresh. And even when all the seaside resorts are languishing in the heat and heat, Tenerife is doing well in August: in the hottest month of the year, it pleases with the morning coolness and does not allow the daytime sun to heat up the air too much.

Kidpassage will tell you about the peculiarities of the weather and recreation on the island at the end of summer and answer the question of whether it is worth coming here in August with children.

Holidays in Tenerife in August: the advantages and disadvantages of the trip

Amazingly beautiful landscapes, the majestic Mount Teide and bewitching beaches with dark sand – all these are just additional bonuses to your trip to the sunny Spanish island. Reviews about holidays in Tenerife in August are always positive: a warm ocean, no scorching heat and an incredible number of places you want to visit. Let’s add some more “for” in favor of the trip.

  • The end of summer is the hottest time on the island, but there are no abnormally high temperatures here, usually it does not rise above +28 °C.
  • Tenerife has a huge selection of attractions and excursion sites for travel lovers.
  • Most fruits ripen in August, they are incredibly juicy, fragrant and tasty here. In addition to traditional watermelons, melons, oranges, bananas and mangoes, you can try unusual exotics.

There are practically no shortcomings of travel, except for increased tourist activity and the associated price increase. In addition, sometimes cold currents come into the ocean, and then it can be cool to swim, but it will be possible to visit the natural attractions of the island.

Weather in Tenerife in August

Interestingly, the end of summer on the island only opens the high season: the ocean warms up well only by the beginning of autumn. The weather in August – September is consistently warm, without sweltering heat, allowing you to take walks and excursions, alternating them with a beach holiday.

The weather in early August is usually not hot, but very sunny, with temperatures not exceeding +25 °С. At night it is cooler – up to +16 ° С, so for an evening walk it is worth putting on jeans and taking a light jacket or windbreaker with you.

The daily temperature in Tenerife in mid-August fluctuates between +23 °C to +28 °C, occasionally rising above +30 °C. Night coolness on the island is a common thing, so the temperature of about +16 ° C does not surprise anyone. However, it happens that at night the thermometers rise to +25 ° C, although this is rather an exception to the rule.

The weather in Tenerife at the end of August remains the same warm, with no significant downward trend in temperature. During the day it is from +20 °С to +26 °С, at night the thermometers do not fall below +15 °С.

Air and water temperature

Due to the unique climate of Tenerife, there is no sudden change of seasons, no critical cold snaps and no winter in the usual sense. The beach season is shifted to the end of summer – autumn, which ensures the influx of tourists to the island at this particular time.

Air temperature in Tenerife in August

The average daytime temperature in Tenerife in August is +25.7 °С, and at night it is about +19.7 °С, so both beach and sightseeing holidays will be comfortable. The weather at this time is so versatile that it can be difficult to choose between a beach or a guided tour.

Water temperature in Tenerife in August

The average water temperature in the Atlantic off the coast of Tenerife by the end of summer is +23.1 ° C and remains at the same level until November, so the beach season on the island lasts quite a long time.

Swimming in warm waves will be comfortable even for the smallest travelers, except for those days when cold currents come to the coast.

Precipitation

By local standards, August is a fairly rainy month, with about 83.5 mm of rainfall in late summer, the most of the year. However, only three days are rainy, so excess moisture will not spoil your plans, but will only slightly refresh the lush island vegetation.

Sunny, cloudy, overcast days

Tenerife has 12.7-13.5 hours of daylight in August. At the end of summer, the island enjoys the sun for 25 days (83% of their total). There are a little more than four days with variable cloudiness (13%), and only one day during the month is overcast (3% of the total number of days).

Beach holidays

Despite the fact that Tenerife is surrounded by the waters of the Atlantic, not every beach is suitable for a safe holiday. Do not forget about the strength of the ocean current and waves. Although this is remembered by those who took care of the improvement of the beaches. Usually, all places for recreation are equipped with powerful breakwaters or are located in bays in order to protect vacationers as much as possible.

Las Teresitas beach

The most beautiful, comfortable and clean beach, located near the capital of the island, is popular with vacationers for a reason. Parallel to the coastline, along its entire length, there is a large breakwater, ensuring the absence of waves. The entrance to the water is gentle, but the depth increases quickly. The sand on the beach is light yellow, imported, the resting place is located in the bay, surrounded by rocks.

The infrastructure is not very developed: on the beach you will find only a couple of bars and free parking. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants in the nearby small village. The road from here to the best observation deck will take no more than five minutes of driving up the serpentine.

Fanabe/Torviscas beach

This coast is considered the longest on the island – about a kilometer. In fact, this is one beach, divided into two parts, smoothly turning into each other. The sand near the coast is gray, the oceanic power is tamed by a breakwater. This place is quite crowded and suitable for any category of vacationers.

There are enough bars, restaurants, children’s water activities, souvenir shops, kiosks with local sweets and soft drinks. Shower, toilet, sun loungers and umbrellas are paid, there is free access to an open shower.

Excursion holidays in Tenerife

The main attraction of the island is its unique nature, captivating with its originality, lush vegetation and real Martian landscapes of volcanic landscapes. It is impossible to be bored on the island – here you can easily find something to your liking.

  • Entertainment in Tenerife for children and adults

Teide Volcano

The majestic mountain crowned with a crater is visible from almost anywhere in Tenerife. No wonder the Teide volcano is considered the highest point in Spain. The unusual nature, the combination of solidified lava, molten rocks and incredible cypress forests make this place truly unique. In early August, the weather for such an excursion will definitely be comfortable.

You can choose an easy, but no less scenic option to climb the crater – a funicular ride on a cable car. The route from the foot of the volcano to its summit takes about 10 minutes. During this time, two funiculars with a capacity of 22 people overcome the path of 2 km, revealing all the beauties of the island.

Siam Park

The real pride of Tenerife, Siam Water Park, occupies 18.5 hectares and is the largest in Spain and Europe. Here you will find an incredible number of Thai-style buildings, the longest “slow river”, rides that made it into the record book, and artificial waves up to 3 m high, attracting experienced surfers here.

The founder of Siam Park was so passionate about Thai culture that, among other things, he even recreated the famous “Floating Market” here. The smallest visitors will be delighted with the mini-city of attractions built for them.

A ticket for a second visit to the park can be bought on the spot, then it will cost four times cheaper. In addition, you can save money if you purchase a Twin ticket to Siam and Loro Park.

The park is open throughout the year, and if the weather is very warm in mid-August, in winter both the artificial beach and the pools are heated to a comfortable temperature.

  • Siam Park: description and photos

Loro Parque

Despite the fact that the name means “Parrot Park”, in fact, Tenerife invites you to a huge zoo of 13.5 hectares. This place is more like a subtropical garden, which has become home to more than 4 thousand individuals of various representatives of the parrot family and other animals collected from all over the globe.

The park hosts four shows featuring parrots, killer whales, dolphins and fur seals. In order to be in time for everything, use the map and move along the most profitable route, moving from one performance to another. Such a walk will be an excellent alternative to a beach holiday at the end of August. Expect to devote at least half a day to excursions.

  • Loro Parque: park features, photos and opening hours

For visiting with children we also recommend:

  • Eagles Park
  • Dolphin show at Aqualand
  • Auditorio de Tenerife
  • Museum of Nature and Man
  • Monkey Park

Holidays, events, festivals

The Canary Islands is a place where you will not leave a good mood, not only thanks to the sun and warm ocean. Holidays in Tenerife in August will not let you get bored, they will swirl in a whirlwind of hot dances, surprise with fireworks and definitely create an atmosphere of universal unceasing fun.

Fiesta de la Candelaria

At a time when the island did not yet belong to Spain, the locals once found a statue of the Virgin Mary carved from dark wood on the ocean shore. In honor of this event, every year on August 15, the islanders celebrate the Fiesta de la Candelaria. It begins the night before with a costumed procession to the coast and a performance. All night the gates of the church are not closed, so that those who wish can honor the Candelar Mother of God. During the festive day, theatrical performances, fairs and folk festivals take place on the streets. By tradition, guests and participants will enjoy an impressive evening fireworks display.

Romeria

Throughout the year, except for November and December, romerias take place on the island – festive processions in honor of one of the saints or the Virgin. So, in the middle of the month, the Canarians honor Saint Roch of Montpellier, who protected the city from a rampant plague in the 16th century. And on the last Saturday of August, locals thank St. Aurelius Augustine, who once saved an entire city that was left without water.

Traditional street festivities, wine tasting, free food, noise and fun are the essential attributes of these wonderfully atmospheric events. You will only have to join them to feel the local flavor and enjoy the holiday.

Prices for holidays in August

“Island of Eternal Spring” is not hot only in relation to the weather, but you can’t say the same about tourist activity. The end of summer is considered the beginning of the high season, and its peak occurs in the first autumn months, so the prices in Tenerife in August behave accordingly – sometimes going down, then going up depending on the calendar time of the year.

Price of tours

By the end of summer, tour operators are slightly reducing the cost of tours in order to increase it again by September. So, compared to July, the price of travel becomes 6% less, but by the beginning of autumn it grows again.

Airfare

Airfare prices are also dropping slightly. Compared to July, tour operators reduce the cost of flights by 4% and maintain this trend in September. However, this is more likely due to the end of the active vacation period than to a decrease in the tourist influx.

Accommodation

The average cost per person per night drops from 117 euros in July to 74 euros in August, a difference of 37%. If you want to save even more on your vacation, it is better to purchase package tours to reduce the total cost of accommodation.

    Meals and transfers

The local cuisine is extremely diverse and is a mixture of Spanish, French, Portuguese and even North African. The geographic location also made a direct contribution to its formation, and therefore seafood in Tenerife is always fresh and tasty.

Be sure to try wild sea bream, large tuna, marlin, vieja — they are boiled or fried and served with various sauces. However, it should be noted that the prices for fish dishes are an order of magnitude higher than for meat ones.

Those with a sweet tooth should try fig jam, palm honey and the local frangoyo dessert, which is made by brewing flour, milk and eggs.

British and Norwegian breakfasts are popular here. The first includes eggs, bacon, juice, coffee, toast and jam, the second option complements salmon or smoked sausage, and it costs three times as much.

Transportation in Tenerife is well developed and is represented by buses, and in the capital – by trams. Getting anywhere on the island is not difficult if you know some of the nuances.

    • Tickets are bought from the driver, and if you buy two ways, you will receive a discount.
    • If you are afraid that you will not be able to explain at which stop you will need to get off, write its name and show it when entering the transport.
    • Many streets on the island have one-way traffic, so buses in opposite directions can leave from the same stop. Pay attention to route names.

    Tips for traveling with children

When planning a vacation, you should take into account all the factors so that both you and your baby are comfortable. But if you chose August for your trip to Tenerife, then you don’t have to worry – the weather will not bother you with heat, and the ocean will not upset you with storms. Long walks can be combined with a beach holiday and sightseeing.

Don’t forget to put some warm clothes in your suitcase for evening walks – the nights are cool at this time. But you shouldn’t refuse sunscreen either: ultraviolet combined with a light breeze can easily burn the baby’s delicate skin.

There is enough entertainment for children on the island, you will not be bored. On the contrary, you will have to plan your holiday program in such a way as to have time to visit as many interesting places as possible. August

The main weather and climatic features of August 2012 in the Northern Hemisphere

Air temperature

In Russia, the first decade of August was still similar to the summer at least in the European territory (ETR) and Urals. Here, with the exception of the northern regions, the anomalies of the mean ten-day air temperature reached +4…+6º. In the Southern Federal District in the Volgograd, Rostov, Astrakhan regions, the Republic of Kalmykia, the thermometers rose above +40º, new daily temperature maxima were set. At the same time, in the north in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug, where the first frosts came, new temperature minimums were recorded. The first breath of autumn was felt by the inhabitants of the northern regions of Siberia and the Far East. nine0005

In the second and third decades, the weather in Russia was more like autumn than summer. And, although heat still prevailed in the Lower Volga and Kalmykia, the first frosts came to Central Russia and the Urals. In the Kostroma, Smolensk, Moscow, Sverdlovsk regions. at night the air temperature dropped to -1…-2º. As for Siberia and the Far East, it was colder than the norm almost everywhere, and the anomalies of the average monthly air temperature reached -2º in the second decade and -4º in the third. By the end of the month in Buryatia, the Trans-Baikal Territory, the Irkutsk Region. temperatures of -4…-6º were no longer a rarity. Autumn came here early. And only in the far east, on Sakhalin, Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands, it was still hot like in summer, the air temperature exceeded +25º, its new daily maximums were recorded. nine0005

As a result, over the month, positive anomalies of more than 2º formed only in the Southern, in the south of the Volga and south-west of the Urals federal districts, as well as in Kamchatka, the Kuriles and the Arctic islands. In the rest of the territory, the average air temperature was close to normal. It did not reach extreme values in any of the federal districts. What can not be said about the summer as a whole. It became the second hottest in the history of regular meteorological observations in Russia, yielding only to the absolute record holder in the summer of 2010. The hottest this summer was in the Urals. In the Orenburg region and the Republic of Bashkortostan, in the Yamalo-Nenets and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrugs, the anomalies of the average temperature for the season exceeded 3º, and in most of the country – 1-2º. nine0005

The average monthly temperature in East and Southeast Asia turned out to be close to normal, but still against a positive background. Only in certain regions of Mongolia, in western China and in Japan did the anomalies of the monthly average temperature reach +2º or more.

The temperature in India is near normal, but in contrast to China it is negative.

It was very hot in the Central Asian republics and Kazakhstan. The hot air from the Iranian highlands had a temperature above 40º. New daily temperature maximums were registered in Uralsk, Aralsk, Aktobe, Tashkent, Fergana, Samarkand, Chimkent and a number of other places. Average monthly temperature anomalies here reached +3…+5º. The whole summer became abnormally hot, especially in Western Kazakhstan. nine0005

The monthly average temperature is 2-3º above normal in most of the Near and Middle East. In Istanbul, the anomaly is +3.3º, Beirut – +3.0º, Kuwait – +3.5º, Mashhad (Iran) – +3.9º. The average summer temperature here is also 2-3º higher.

In Africa, hot weather along the Mediterranean coast (+2-3º anomalies in Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria) was accompanied by relative coolness in the Sahel region. Here, south of the Sahara, the air temperature was close to normal or below it. In northern Africa, last summer was the second hottest on record. Only once in the distant 1931g. it was even hotter here in the summer.

It was hot in Europe. In Spain, the air temperature reached 45º, in France, Greece, Moldova and the Balkans – 40º. New daily temperature maximums were registered in Eastern Europe. A red level of medical danger has been declared in a number of cities in Italy. The authorities handed out free bottles of water to all passers-by and suggested not to go outside from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. if possible. Tours have been canceled for the time being. In Belgium, France, Spain, Austria, in the south of Germany, in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy and in all the Balkan countries, in Ukraine, the anomalies of the monthly average air temperature exceeded 2-3º. The past August and summer as a whole are the fourth hottest in the ranking with 1891g But still, both in terms of the duration of the hot weather and in terms of the temperature itself, this summer cannot be compared with the “killer” one, as it was called in the summer of 2003. It was much hotter then.

In Canada, August and the whole summer of this year will go down in history as one of the hottest. August received the second rank among the warmest. In the provinces of Quebec and Newfoundland, the average monthly temperature anomalies are +2º and more. In Toronto – +2.3º, Montreal – 3.0º, Gander Airport in Newfoundland – 2.4º. Summer was the hottest in the history of the country. In the Labrador Peninsula, its average temperature is 3º above normal, and in most of the country – 2º. nine0005

In the US, August has somewhat brought down the July heat. The average temperature in the country is only in the 2nd ten among the highest values. It was noticeably warmer than usual in August only in the west in Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, and also in the northeast in New England. Here the anomalies are +2-3º. In the rest of the country, the temperature was close to normal, and in the southeast in the states of Florida, Georgia, Alabama it was even colder than usual.

The average summer temperature in the Arctic repeated the record high of 2007 and 2011. On the islands of the Kara Sea and in Greenland, the summer was 2-3º warmer than usual. According to the WMO, the area of ice cover in the Arctic Ocean has fallen to a minimum. Usually the minimum occurs in mid-September. Thus, the absolute minimum of ice cover was registered on September 18, 2007. Now, on August 26, the area of ice in the Arctic turned out to be even smaller and it can be assumed that it will decrease even more until mid-September. Over the past 30 years, the area of ice in the Arctic has decreased by 13%. Scientists express opinions that already in this decade there will be no ice on the Arctic shelf during the warm period of the year. nine0005

In Moscow, the average air temperature in August was +17. 7º, anomaly +1.3º. Last summer in the capital was much colder than in the previous two years.

Ocean surface temperature

The average Pacific surface temperature in the Northern Hemisphere is normal. As in the previous month, the warm Kuroshio Current looks weakened, it has negative SST anomalies, and the cold Canary Current looks intensified (anomalies up to -1º and more). In the equatorial latitudes of the ocean, a slow drift towards El Niño continues. Positive SST anomalies along the equator, however, are still small. nine0005

In the Atlantic Ocean, the area-average SST anomaly increased significantly. Now the ocean as a whole is warmer than the norm by 0.5º. Particularly large SST anomalies occur in the middle reaches of the Gulf Stream (up to +2º and more), off the southeastern coast of Greenland (anomalies up to +2º and more) and in the northwest of the ocean along the coast of Labrador, in the Baffin Sea and in the Davis Strait ( anomalies up to +1º and more).

Abnormally warm water can be traced along the entire Northern Sea Route. In some places, the water temperature here is above the norm by 1º, and in the Chukchi Sea even by 2º. nine0005

Water temperatures are significantly above normal in the Baltic and Black Seas, in the east of the Mediterranean Sea and in the Red Sea.

Precipitation

ETR was rich in precipitation in August. There are almost no areas where rainfall is less than normal. In most of the territory, they turned out to be more than the norm. The Central and Western regions of the Volga Federal Districts were especially successful in this, where the amount of precipitation exceeded the norm by 2-3 times (Ivanovo, Vladimir, Lipetsk, Penza, Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod regions). The main contribution to the treasury of precipitation fell on the third decade of August. In the Northwestern Federal District, an abundance of rains took place in the north of the Arkhangelsk region, and here they went along with wet snow. Heavy downpours at the end of the month fell on St. Petersburg, where the amount of precipitation for the month approached two norms. In the south of the ETR, more than 2 norms of rain fell in the Rostov Region, Kalmykia, and the Krasnodar Territory. nine0005

Beyond the Urals, a lot of precipitation fell on the southern regions of Siberia. Here they are about the norm and more. Rains flooded most of the Far Eastern Federal District. Precipitation norms were exceeded in Yakutia, Magadan Region, Chukotka, Khabarovsk Territory.

Heavy rains were in China, Korea, Japan. In the south of Japan and Korea, up to 80-150 mm of precipitation fell per day. In places, the norms here are exceeded by 2.0-2.5 times. A catastrophic situation has developed in China. Rains at the end of the month literally flooded the Sichuan province in the central part of the country. There was a break in the dam at the power plant. As a result, there was a flood, which Chinese meteorologists estimate as the strongest in the last 50 years. Heavy rains have passed in the Philippines. In Manila, for two days on August 6 and 7, a monthly rainfall fell. As a result, a significant part of the capital was under water. 60 people became victims of the flood

The summer monsoon in India is weak this year. Much of the country receives less than normal rainfall. Only in the north and in neighboring Pakistan did heavy rains cause floods and massive landslides that led to deaths.

In Central Asia, the Near and Middle East was mostly dry.

In Africa, the rains continue to fall heavily in the Sahel region. Here precipitation is about the norm. The rest of the area is dry.

The heat in Southern Europe was accompanied by very dry weather. Precipitation here is much less than the norm almost everywhere. In a number of countries: Spain, Portugal, in the Balkans there are areas where not a drop of rain has fallen in a month. This led to significant fires. Having experienced the driest winter in the last 70 years, Spain did not wait for the heavenly moisture in the summer. Fires raged throughout the country, but especially in the south, as well as in the Canary Islands. Tourists who were vacationing in the famous resorts of Marbella and Tenerife underwent an urgent evacuation. In Portugal, the fire came to the suburbs of Lisbon. In Greece, it surrounded Athens, which caused an emergency evacuation of children who were resting in summer camps. In Croatia, fires have blocked the main road along the Adriatic coast. Only in the north of Germany and Poland, partly in Scandinavia and Great Britain the precipitation this month turned out to be normal. nine0005

In North America, the rains were sufficient in most of Canada, and only in the west in the province of British Columbia were they less than normal. In the state capital Vancouver – less than 10%. In the United States, the average rainfall in the Midwest and Southeast of the country. Especially a lot of them were on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, which is to blame for the tropical hurricane Isaac. In New Orleans, the norm of precipitation was exceeded by 3 times. The rest of the country is still dry, which has led to major wildfires, especially in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Nebraska and Colorado. nine0005

85.0 mm of rain fell in Moscow or 110% of the norm. In general, during the summer, precipitation in the capital also turned out to be about the norm.

Atmospheric circulation

In the upper stratosphere at the AT-10 level, the anticyclone located above the pole had a geopotential below the norm by 15-20 dm during the whole month. In the last five days of August, the restructuring of the circulation to the winter regime began, which ended by September 1 with the formation of a circumpolar vortex. nine0005

In the equatorial stratosphere, the easterly phase of the quasi-biennial winds persisted in August.

The geopotential field averaged over a month in the middle troposphere (at the AT-500 level) had a number of features. An increased geopotential was noted everywhere from Europe to Western Siberia, while the largest geopotential anomalies were over Italy (+7 ladies) and over the south of the Urals (+8 ladies). The most intense tropospheric ridges existed here in the first and second decades of the month. The tropospheric ridge directed from the Atlantic to Greenland also remained intense throughout the month, where the geopotential anomalies, as in July, were +9ladies. Over North America, the geopotential was increased in the west mainly in the first two decades of August (anomalies +4 dams).

The position and intensity of the near-polar cyclonic vortex corresponded to the norm, however, active cyclonic activity was associated with deep troughs located above the Kara Sea (anomalies -8 ladies), Yakutia (anomalies -7 ladies) and the East Siberian Sea (anomalies -6 ladies) . Most of all, in the middle troposphere, the geopotential was lowered over the northeast of the Atlantic (anomalies -11 dams), especially low values were noted here in the second decade. Areas with low geopotential (-3…-4 dm) were also located in the east of the USA and in the subtropical latitudes of the Pacific Ocean. nine0005

The planetary high-altitude frontal zone (PVFZ) deviated from the climatic position everywhere. Its greatest deviations to the south were noted in the northeast of the Atlantic (up to 10º) and over Yakutia (up to 7º), and to the north – in the northwest of the Atlantic and in the Bering Sea (up to 6º).

The index of zonal circulation in the hemisphere as a whole was close to normal, but in high latitudes of ESR II, zonal transport was significantly (65%) more intense than usual, and in temperate latitudes of the same region – 31% lower. The meridional circulation in the hemisphere as a whole was slightly (by 8%) higher than normal. The most intensive meridional air exchange was observed in the middle latitudes of ESR I (+23%) and in high latitudes of ESR III (+19%).

The surface pressure field averaged over a month also had a number of features. In the Atlantic CDA pair, the Icelandic low was shifted to the southeast towards the British Isles (pressure anomalies -8 hPa). The deepest cyclones were formed here in the second decade of the month, when the average ten-day pressure was 986 hPa. On the one hand, rainy weather was associated with these cyclones in Great Britain, in the south of Scandinavia and on the coast of the north of the ETR, on the other hand, deep North Atlantic cyclones often combined with southern troughs, contributing to the establishment of meridional circulation and, accordingly, the removal of hot tropical air from Africa to European countries. As a result, August was hot in Europe, especially in the south and southeast. The Azores High thus turned out to be somewhat weakened on the northern periphery. nine0005

Pressure anomalies over the center and south of EPR in August were negative (-3 hPa), and over the north of ETR and Scandinavia – positive (+3 hPa). The weather during the month in EPR was non-uniform: the high-pressure ridges that formed here were destroyed by the exits of active southern cyclones, which were most frequent and abundant in the third ten-day period of the month. Spotting in the distribution field of precipitation anomalies was also characteristic of such processes. The reason for the high air temperatures, especially in the southern regions, was the absence of advection of cold air masses. nine0005

An extensive zone of negative pressure anomalies occupied the north of the eastern half of Russia: the areas of active cyclogenesis were the East Siberian Sea (anomalies -9 hPa), the Kara Sea and Yakutia (anomalies -6 hPa).

In Southeast Asia, the active monsoon continued to produce heavy rainfall in southern China and Thailand. Fronts remained sharpened in subtropical latitudes and heavy rains associated with them in central and northeastern China, in Mongolia, Korea, and Transbaikalia.

Indian monsoon remained weak. In August, rainfall was below normal everywhere. In general, since the beginning of the season in India, there has been a significant deficit of precipitation, especially in its western half.

The Hawaiian anticyclone dominated in the Pacific pair of CDA. The intense ridge propagated to the northwest Pacific Ocean (+6 hPa anomalies) and further to the Sea of Japan (+5 hPa anomalies). Accordingly, the weather in the south of Kamchatka, in Primorye and in Japan was drier and warmer than usual. nine0005

On the North American continent, the Pacific cyclones moved to the far north, so in some parts of Canada, the amount of precipitation in some places exceeded the monthly norm. Negative pressure anomalies were noted throughout the country: from -1 hPa in the west to -3 hPa in the east. In the United States, the amount of precipitation significantly exceeded the norm only in the south. Heavy rains here were associated with tropical troughs over the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the release of Hurricane Isaac at the very end of the month, which brought a huge amount of rainfall. The continued advection of air masses from the southwestern regions of the continent contributed to the persistence of large positive temperature anomalies in North America. The largest anomalies were observed in northern Canada and the western United States. nine0005

Positive pressure anomalies (+5 hPa) prevailed over Mexico, which contributed to the warming of the land and anomalously high temperatures. Significant precipitation here fell only on the west coast in the zone of the ITC (intratropical convergence zone).

In the tropical zone of the northern hemisphere, 16 tropical cyclones formed in July (normal 12.2).

The most active was the cyclogenesis in the Atlantic, where 8 cyclones appeared at a norm of 3.1. The land was affected by three cyclones. Tropical cyclone Ernesto, which originated in the center of the Atlantic at the very beginning of the month, approached the Yucatan Peninsula a week later in the hurricane stage with winds of 40 m/s and passed along the coast of Campeche Bay, maintaining a storm wind of 20 m/s. The cyclone brought heavy rainfall that led to flooding in parts of Mexico. In the middle of the month, Tropical Storm Helen, which originated off the coast of Mexico, immediately made landfall with heavy rains. nine0005

Tropical cyclone Isaac was the most destructive. The countries and islands of the Caribbean region (Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba) were first affected by the cyclone, where strong winds and rains caused significant destruction and death of more than 30 people. After leaving the Gulf of Mexico and approaching the coast of Louisiana on August 29, the cyclone intensified to the stage of a category 1 hurricane (wind speed 35 m/s, gusts up to 40 m/s). On the evening of August 29 (local time), “Isaac” went to the coast of Louisiana, 90 km east of New Orleans. When approaching land, the hurricane slowed down, so the coastal areas were under the influence of heavy rains for 2-3 days. New Orleans received the most precipitation (500 mm). The height of the storm wave was about 3.5 m, the rise in the water level in the rivers reached 3 m in some places. In some areas, the rivers overflowed their banks, causing severe floods. When the cyclone moved deep into the continent, there were cases of tornadoes. The measures taken made it possible to avoid large human casualties, but the material damage from the disaster is enormous. nine0005

Five cyclones formed in the Pacific Northwest at a norm of 5.2. Four cyclones that reached the typhoon stage made landfall, bringing heavy rains there. Tropical cyclones continued to attack the coast of China. According to the Chinese meteorological service, the number of cyclones that have made landfall this season has already exceeded the norm by 1.5 times. In August, typhoons Haiku and Kai-Tak came to China.

The most powerful cyclone in August was Typhoon Bolavin, which on August 27-28 passed through Okinawa with a maximum wind speed of 50 m/s, and then near the Korean Peninsula with hurricane winds up to 40 m/s. A huge amount of precipitation fell everywhere (in South Korea – up to 306 mm / day). The cyclone made landfall in North Korea as a severe tropical storm (wind speed 28 m/s), and on 29In August, the ex-typhoon began to influence the Russian Far East (Primorye and the south of the Khabarovsk Territory), where winds up to 30 m/s and heavy rains were noted.

Majorca, Spain – August Weather

What’s the weather like in Majorca in August

August is one of the most popular and hottest times of the year to visit Majorca, Balearic Islands when the temperatures are scorching and sunshine is a sure thing.

During this month, the average temperature starts off at 25°C at the beginning of August and very slowly drops until it reaches 23-24°C by the end of the month, making it a great time to hit the beach during your holiday. If you’re still looking for somewhere even warmer, Dubai is a great place to soak up the summer sun, with highs reaching almost 40°C in August.

Temperatures

At this time of the year, the daily highs stick around the 30°C mark, dropping below 26°C or exceeding 34°C only one day out of every 10.

Equally, the daily lows for August change very little, staying around 19°C and dropping below 15°C or rising above 22°C only one day in 10.

Throughout August, the daily high temperatures gradually fall, which means that the coldest days of the month tend to be at the end 29 to 31 with the warmest days towards the start 1 to 3.

The hottest temperature ever recorded in August in Majorca is a scorching 41°C, with the coldest temperature ever recorded a cool 11°C. When you compare these temperatures to the average for the month 25°C it’s clear to see that they are the extremes and certainly not the norm.

One of the liveliest, most dangerous, and exciting festivals on the island, Can Picafort Correfoc takes place around the first Sunday of the month. The festival features a procession of locals dressed as devils and demons. These scary creatures let off a plethora of fireworks and breathe flames until they arrive in the town center for a grand finale-style firework display and traditional dancing. Protective clothing i.e. long sleeves and a hood or hat is essential and taking children along is certainly not recommended.

Feast of the Assumption

August 15th marks the Feast of the Assumption a public holiday in Majorca. The locals consider this festival to be of huge importance and celebrate with parades, carnivals, traditional dancing and music concerts which take place all over the island. Just like the battle re-enactment, the Feast of the Assumption is a great chance to mix with the locals and learn more about their culture. Don’t forget since this event is a public holiday, almost all banks, shops, supermarkets, and services will be closed all day.
