Crete is the warmest resort in Greece. The swimming season here lasts from late April to October. And the tiny island of Gavdos, which belongs to the administrative region of Crete, is the southernmost point not only of Greece, but of the entire continent.
Vegetation on the coastal areas of the island is rather sparse. But when it comes to crops, Crete is no exception. Here, as in the rest of Greece, almost everything grows. In the mountainous regions of the island, coniferous trees, mainly pines, predominate.
April and May – the beginning of the season
Tour operators providing their services in the domestic market, declare that the season begins in Crete at the end of April. This is not entirely true. The air temperature reaches an average of +20°C by the end of the month. The winds subside, the rains stop. But sea water is already starting to warm up to 17-18°C. In general, April is not the most suitable month for a beach holiday. It is ideal for sightseeing and leisurely walks around the spring blooming island.
A full-fledged season in Crete begins at the end of May, when the air warms up to +25 °C, and the sea water up to +20 °C. It is still cold on the island at night. May is the calmest month in Crete.

Then jump on a ferry to hop over to Taronga Zoo, one of the most picturesque zoos in the world, or over to Manly Beach, which has a more local vibe than the more touristy Bondi Beach. Warm Places to Travel to in April
I believe everyone deserves a vacation. Most people think that a vacation should be in a tropical paradise where sometimes your skin seems to melt due to the extreme heat (maybe I exaggerated just a little, but you know what I mean!). Skip the tropical beaches in the Summer and go on a great vacation in the Spring to a warm place instead! I have put together a great list of a few of the warm places to go in April. You can choose to take a road trip through the USA or maybe you might want to see Europe or Asia. Either way, I can help you if you do not know where to head to. Don’t worry, as I have you covered, so keep reading to find a few warm places to travel to in April.
Savannah, Georgia, USA
Just my favorite city in the USA! Spring is definitely the best time to visit Savannah, Georgia. In April, the weather is warm enough to enjoy nearby beach activities and other outdoor activities. You can even enjoy the azalea flowering season. You can get to know this city by walking its squares: Johnson, Wright, Madison, Monterey, and Chippewa squares. You, of course, must see the fountain at Forsyth Park because it is one of the oldest fountains in the country and dates back to the 1850s.
If you are looking for adventure then you must rent a kayak, canoe, paddleboard, or go boating in the water. Kiteboarding on Tybee Island is also a great place to view the city and get in some exercise.
North Lake Tahoe, California USA
Go visit North Lake Tahoe in California, as it is a blast during the month of April. The warm weather of April allows for trips to the parks, the beaches, and even the hiking trails. There is a beautiful view of the Fanette Island and tea house from the Emerald Bay State Park. Other great hikes in Lake Tahoe are Rubicon Trail, Eagle Rock Trailhead, Shirley Canyon Trail, Five Lakes Trail, Pinedrop Trail, and Stateline Lookout. You can get a real look at Mother Nature’s beauty and wildlife at the King’s Beach State Recreation Area. It is located in downtown Kings Beach between Bear and Coon Street on the shores of North Lake Tahoe.
Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
I know I may have mentioned that a tropical beach is not the best getaway but the warm weather of April allows for an exception. Besides sunbathing or swimming along the stunning seven-mile beach, there are plenty of other activities to partake in. Visit the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park for a glimpse at the preservation of the Island’s flora and fauna. You can make your trip memorable by visiting Stingray City and feeding the stingrays! Take a night tour to the bioluminescent bay and swim in the fluorescent water. Other things to do and see in Grand Cayman are: visit the Crystal Caves, go horseback riding along the beach, go kitesurfing, or just go to Hell Grand Cayman! Enjoy the Cayman cuisine while you are here!
Porto, Portugal
While Lisbon may be the front-runner for the most-visited place in Portugal, the city of Porto has amazing places to see and fun things to do during the spring months. The must-see attractions in Porto include Torre dos Clerigos, stroll along the Cais da Ribeira, cruise along the Duoro River, Fundacao Seralves Museum and a trip to a port wine cellar. This city is home to the port wine and you can visit old warehouses and major cellars that offer wine tastings and guided tours. The warm weather allows you to check out the city without large crowds and you can get better deals on hotels and flights.
Venice, Italy
You might want to seize the opportunity to visit Venice in the next few years before it begins to sink deeper into the sea. Torrential rain and floods are not as common during the month of April, so this is a great time to visit Venice. The first thing you must do in Venice is to take a gondola ride along the Grand Canal. Other amazing things to do and see include: eating gelato, visiting St. Mark’s Square and Basilica, visiting Doge’s Palace, checking out the Bridge of Sighs and walking along the Rialto Bridge (a scene from Spiderman: Far from Home was shot at this location). While you are in Venice, be sure to take the ferry over to Burano, it will be a colorful experience for sure!
Amori, Japan
The main reason for visiting Amori in April is to see the cherry blossoms. These pale-pink flowers can be spotted in places like Ashino Park, Hirosaki Park, and Towada City Kanchogai-dori. Other beautiful places to see in Amori are Showa Daibutsu, Hakkoda Ropeway, Amore Museum of Art and Aoiumi Park. Some fun things to do in Amori are: hike along the Oirase Gorge Stream, visit the Nebuta House Museum and take a speedboat tour on Lake Towada You are going to want to take out this bucket list of things to do while visiting Amori, Japan.
Wilmington North Carolina, USA
The city of Wilmington, North Carolina supports many wonderful festivals and activities throughout the year and April’s calendar is usually full of fun things to see and do. For those who prefer a historical view of the city, you should visit the following attractions: Cape Fear Museum of History and Science, Fort Fisher Historic Area, St. James Episcopal Church (the oldest church in the city), Sunset Park Historic District, and the Wilmington Railroad Museum.
They also have the Azalea festival in the spring, which is the biggest arts festival in Wilmington. This annual art festival goes from April 1st to April 5th this year. You can check out the awesome Spring Art Show and even the 3-D art creations. A DO NOT MISS is the Airlie Gardens, which has more than 60 acres of formal gardens. Also, I think the warm weather calls for a calming walk along the Carolina Beach Boardwalk or Carolina Beach State Park.
Be Sure and Take a Vacation in April!
It does not matter to which of these places you want to visit, but you should visit at least one of the above-mentioned places during April. The warm weather is perfect for almost every event and activity you want to partake in. If your budget cannot handle a big European trip, then stay in the States and have a wonderful spring trip. Regardless of which warm place you choose to travel to in April, just remember to have fun and enjoy the experience.

Choose a hotel where the pool is heated. In April 2023, you can fly to Thailand for a relatively inexpensive vacation! Vouchers to top hotels are cheaper than in winter. We lived in Phuket in April and the first half of May and were satisfied with the rest: hotel prices are dropping, and there are much fewer people in the resorts. Lots of cheap fruits appear.
April is a month of transition between high and low seasons. Not everyone is comfortable in such conditions: humidity rises, it rains more often, the sea is not always calm. However, you can relax on the beach, but it is better not to go on long excursions. Find out about holidays in Thailand in the spring.

In April 2023, you can have a cheap vacation at sea in India. April is the off-season, the transition to the rainy season in Goa. Gradually it becomes hotter and wetter, stuffiness is hard to endure. The sea is already restless, muddy. There are almost no tourists, and most sheks are closed. Traveling is uncomfortable. In principle, in early April, you can still relax if you choose a great hotel with a swimming pool. Check out the top 10 hotels in Goa.

We rested in the Maldives in April on different local islands: Rasdhoo, Thoddoo and Ukulhas. The weather was ideal for a beach holiday, snorkeling and excursions: during the day it was over +30°C, it was completely calm and without precipitation, the sea cooled pleasantly. Entry conditions. Israel accepts tourists from the Russian Federation, all you need is insurance covering treatment for coronavirus. There are no covid restrictions.
Israel is another good destination where you can relax in April 2023 by the sea. Warm water on the Red Sea in Eilat and Ein Bokek on the Dead Sea.

Entry conditions. All covid restrictions have been lifted from December 7, 2022.
April is the last month before heavy rains in Sri Lanka. During the day it is very warm +32°С, sea water +30°С. The sky is often overcast and it can rain in the evening. In April, it is better to relax on the sea at east (eg Trincomalee). In Hikkaduwa, Benton and Unawatuna, it often storms. Find out more about the weather in Sri Lanka.
We were in Sri Lanka in March and traveled half the country. The island is very colorful! We definitely recommend going there. By the way, in April you will still have time to look at the whales – they migrate off the coast of Mirissa. We went on a whale safari – it’s impressive. Read how to see whales in Sri Lanka.

Bali
Entry conditions. Only with a certificate of vaccination, and at least 14 days must have passed since the date of the last vaccination. You also need covid insurance and a return ticket or a ticket to another country. A visa can be obtained on arrival for 30 days and extended once for another 30 days. The price is $35.
Bali is not exactly suitable for a beach holiday. First of all, it is culture and nature, excursions and outdoor activities. If beaches are important, choose Nusa Dua and Sanur – there are the least waves. We also rested in Bali in April, but lived in Ubud and explored the north of the island. During the day it is hot and humid + 30 ° C, sometimes it rained – more often at night. Everything is as usual in Southeast Asia!

How is the weather in Turkey in April?
In April, the tourist season begins in Turkey. In the resorts of the Mediterranean coast, the weather is the warmest. In Antalya, Alanya, Kemer and Finike, a comfortable average daily temperature of + 23-24 ℃ was established. But sometimes during the day on open sunny areas it can reach +30℃. It is cooler at night, but not lower than +10℃.
If you choose the warmest among the Mediterranean resorts, you should pay attention to Alanya and Side.
In Marmaris, Kusadasi, Didim, the beach season comes a couple of months later. But this does not prevent visiting the Aegean coast in April, because at any time of the year you can have a good rest in Turkey.
Sea of Marmara resorts Erdek, Armutlu, Yalova, Mudanya and Chinardzhik, where there are no strong storms, cool air masses still dominate, the average daytime temperature is +18℃, sea water temperature is usually no more than 13-15℃.
It is still cool in April at the Black Sea resorts of Turkey. Therefore, those who want to make an exciting journey to the homeland of Turkish tea, Rize, do not need to count on sea swims in April.

What is the best way to spend time in Turkey in April?
Of course, the April weather is not quite suitable for active swimming in the sea. The weather can change several times a day, from warm and sunny to cool and drizzling, but unobtrusive rain. Toward the end of the month, the subtropical climate will win and remind you that a hot summer is approaching.
Traveling around Turkey in April, you should try to find time for an excursion to Istanbul for the Tulip Festival. An amazing sight when the city turns into a tulip paradise for a whole month. There is not a single district in Istanbul without magnificent islands of these amazing flowers. April Istanbul is enveloped in aromas of flowers and the sea, real Turkish tea and hot lakoums straight from the oven. It is comfortable to move around the city, as there is no exhausting summer heat and winter rains. The festival can be enjoyed to the fullest.
In the second half of April, Turkey celebrates Children’s Day. This is a good reason to go on vacation with children.
On the 27th it is worth visiting the famous resort on the Aegean coast in Marmaris. Here yachtsmen from all over the world gather for the International Maritime Festival.
On the beaches of the Mediterranean coast in April you can get a beautiful even tan. Therefore, a beach holiday is very welcome. Those who are not afraid of cool water bathe. Many hotels provide vacationers with the opportunity to swim in a heated pool.
Which resort should I choose?
There are no crowds of tourists yet, so excursions to the sights of Turkey will be especially comfortable. Resorts worth visiting in April:
Antalya in April attracts with its magnificent clean beaches, which are not yet overcrowded with tourists. In addition to a beach holiday in the cool waters of the Mediterranean, here you can enjoy yachting. Extreme lovers choose jeep safari. The weather changes here during this period very often. But tourists do not have to get upset because of unexpected wind or rain. In Antalya, you can have a great time shopping. Experienced travelers going to Antalya in April take warm clothes with them. If suddenly a warm sweater was not in the travel suitcase, but buying new clothes in Turkey will be a pleasure.
If you want peace and privacy, you can choose the Mediterranean resort of Beldibi. In April there are no noisy discos there yet, during the day it is +22-23℃, sometimes the temperature reaches +28℃. In the evenings, you have to wear thin sweaters or jackets. Magnificent walks along the coast, delicious breakfasts and lunches are provided. Turkish cuisine always pleases with its diversity, and local chefs with their imagination and skill.
The beach season in Alanya starts earlier than others. For many tourists, this resort attracts budget prices and high quality service. This is the southernmost resort region of Turkey, there are stunning beaches from which you can only paint pictures. From a holiday in Alanya, tourists bring albums with great photo shoots. Alanya has a large selection of hotels for families with children. This is a big plus to go here in April with the family. Usually trips to Alanya are sold out long before the start of the holiday season.
Kemer welcomes the first flow of tourists in April. In the first half of the month it is still relatively cool here, the average temperature during the day is +23℃, but by the end of the month you can feel the approaching summer, the thermometer more and more often shows +28℃. Kemer is located on the slopes of the Taurus Mountains, so the spring coolness here is felt most of all. It is worth going to Kemer in April to fully enjoy the invigorating Mediterranean air, taste delicious traditional Turkish dishes, go shopping and visit local museums.
Good, dry and warm weather in Fethiye in April. When planning a trip here, you can grab an umbrella, but you won’t need it often. Fethiye flourishes in April and becomes a hotbed of cultural life. Prices in hotels in April please. Numerous cultural programs, festivals, children’s holidays are at the service of vacationers. The abundance of museums and historical attractions in the city pleases guests, especially the elderly.
If you are looking for romance and Mediterranean charm, a trip to Side in April will not disappoint. The piercing blue sky is rarely overcast here, and the sea water can sometimes warm up to + 22℃. Here you can enjoy spending time on sun loungers, gradually getting a quality tan. One can only dream of such a thing at the height of the season, when the sun is scorching and you won’t go to the beach without sunblock. Lovers of antiquity sign up for excursions to the Semelie Peninsula. This is a concentration of historical monuments that attract tourists from all over the world. In the middle of the month, Side celebrates Turkey’s Independence Day on a grand scale, and children will be delighted with the festive events dedicated to Children’s Day. Competitions, musical performances, concerts are held at all city venues.
Turkish resorts in April are ideal for getting rid of the negative emotions of civilization and gaining strength.
Should I go to Turkey in April?
Prices in Turkish resorts in April are very affordable, so you can get the most pleasant impressions for little money.
Whatever you call the beginning of season of new growth, Ready, Steady…Spring!
In the Easter season, Mallorca has far more to offer than bunnies and egg hunting. For some people Easter means bunnies, chocolate and hunting for colorful eggs. For others, it’s an emotional time for reflection during a religious holiday. For the island of Mallorca it also means…go time! The season has officially started.
What Easter Means on the Island #
After a lovely autumn, a mild winter and a beautiful Spring, it’s time to prepare for Summer. High season is around the corner and sun, beach and boats await. No, we’re not there yet, but usually around Easter you can feel the air getting warmer, the wind getting breezier and the atmosphere rising. After a sleepy Winter, people are excited and energized to kick off a new season. Restaurants and cafés were closed for months and the hotels shut down for the winter, but this is all coming to life now.
With the back and forth of travel and social distancing restrictions, hotels and restaurants are tentatively opening. Make sure to keep in touch with your favorite places on IG and Facebook to let them know that you are interested in joining them. Now is a good time to get in touch.
Semana Santa & Other Holidays #
Mallorca is home to people from over 128 countries. We have a multitude of traditions but Easter is usually the start signal for the summer. Religious holidays often come with some time off from work, it’s also a popular time of year for visitors to enjoy a prolonged weekend on our beautiful island. In Mallorca, Semana Santa – Holy Week is an eventful time of the year with lots of activities and festivities around the island. The most important ones are of course the Easter processions which can be seen in many places, ending with the biggest, and most joyful one, in Palma.
This year, travel restrictions have been lifted as COVID infection rates have decreased. The Balearic Government is allowing all visitors. Religious services are both in person and online again this year so you’ll be able to join your family and friends in a virtual celebration. I have a Persian friend who celebrated Nowruz with her family by cooking all of her favorite foods and then having a virtual party. That type of event isn’t for everyone but she is making the most out of this current time.
How to Stay Active During Holidays #
As my friends are showing me, this season is so much more than Easter. If you are not religious or honor other faith traditions, the weather is cool enough for hiking. Check out our Two of Mallorca’s Most Spectacular Hiking Trails for a complete guide to enjoying the island.
If you are more inclined to brave the cooler waters this time of year, check out our Best Beaches in Mallorca Guide to find a cala that fits your mood. The weather in Mallorca in April is warm enough to stick your toes in the sand and enjoy some beach life. If you like your swim in the sea to be nice and refreshing, this is the time to jump into the water. In springtime, the Mediterranean hasn’t reached its peak temperatures yet, but some might say it’s warm enough for a swim with an average temperature of 18-20 degrees in April-May. Though, you can see people swimming in the sea all year round, since the water rarely get colder than 15 degrees. A chilly swim is good for your health!
Mallorca Weather in April #
April in Mallorca also means that the temperature has reached a pleasant 17-20 degrees, with approximately eleven hours of sun per day. The weather is lovely, the island is green and it’s the calm before the fun and friendly storm of visitors in July and August.
Late spring in Mallorca means best of both worlds. It’s the perfect temperature for hiking or cycling, or why not go rollerblading along Palma’s mile-long promenade by the sea or go for a road trip through the stunning landscape of Mallorca’s countryside? Join Mallorca Odyssey on 9th of April to enjoy kayaking, biking and hiking around our beautiful island from Andratx to Pollença.
Enjoy the Sun without Overheating #
These Mallorcan Villages are a Must #
Already in April the number of tourists normally start to build up but the island is still very calm compared to the summer months. This year is an exception with COVID restrictions. This is the time to pay a visit to the beautiful and historical mountain villages of Valldemosa, Deìa, Sóller or Fornalutx, just to mention a few, and enjoy the tranquility and beauty of having a coffee on a little plaza by the foot of the Tramuntana mountains. These lovely villages can get crowded during peak season. This time of year is orange harvest time. For more information about villages and guides, check out Village Profiles or type in the name of the activity and find a place that fits your schedule.
Make sure to.
.. #
And before the temperature starts to heat up, climbing well over thirty degrees in summer, seize the moment to soak up some sun without the risk of overheating. Start your day with a brunch on a relaxing terrace, eat a spontaneous tapas lunch in Palma, have a cocktail in one of the beach clubs and enjoy the sunset from a roof top somewhere.. After a long winter, it’s time to take life outdoors again. Go pick a few oranges and try your hand at this traditional and delicious orange and almond cake. Enjoy this beautiful place and all the island offers!!

WASHINGTON – Two businessmen have been charged with trying to conceal a sanctioned Russian oligarch’s ownership of a luxury yacht seized in Spain last year by the U.S. government, the Justice Department said Friday.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Vladislav Osipov, a dual Russian and Swiss national who the Justice Department says was an employee of Viktor Vekselberg, a billionaire Russian oligarch and ally of Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Another defendant, Richard Masters, was arrested by Spain at the request of U.S. authorities. He’s a British businessman who ran a yacht management company in Palma de Mallorca, Spain — where Vekselberg’s yacht, Tango, was seized last April.
Prosecutors allege Vekselberg bought the Tango in 2011 and has owned it since then, though they believe he has used shell companies to try to obfuscate his ownership and to avoid financial oversight. He was sanctioned in 2018. All of Vekselberg’s assets in the United States are frozen and American companies are barred from doing business with him and his entities.
The Justice Department says the men worked together to hide Vekselberg’s ownership of the yacht from the U.S. government, even developing a fake name for the vessel, as a way to evade sanctions and to illegally collect hundreds of thousands of dollars in U.S services and financial transactions.
They are charged in federal court in the District of Columbia with crimes including money laundering and violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. It was not immediately clear if they had lawyers who could speak on their behalf.

Travel to and from the boat
Personal travel insurance (highly recommended) – you can find some recommendations in the FAQ
Personal laundry (some ports have facilities to do laundry if you need)
How much to bring in addition?
Generally, you won’t need anything in addition but this will depend on how much you want to eat in restaurants and spend on other things like souvenirs and tourist attractions. Some people prefer to eat only on the boat and don’t spend anything on restaurants and some prefer to eat outside whenever we are on land. This is very individual.
Local currency
Euro is accepted currency in Cape Verde so save yourself all the problems by taking Euro in cash. There might not be ATMs in all places we plan to visit. The BCA and Caixa banks are quite prominent all over Cape Verde and you can change Euro to Escudos. The Escudo is fixed at a rate of 110 escudos to 1 euro and euro is widely accepted across the island so you don’t have to exchange any Euros to Escudos. The Cape Verdean escudo isn’t available outside of the country, which means you’ll need to exchange it once you arrive in Cape Verde and exchange it back before you leave the islands.
Who can join
You should have at least 1 week of sea sailing experience on board a sailing yacht to join the trip. If you don’t have any experience yet, join the trip Around Cape Verde and continue the journey in this leg.
If you are new to ocean sailing, this is a great opportunity for you to get into it and boost your sailing skills.
You will become an active member of the crew. You are not just a passenger. During a voyage, you will assist with helming, sail trimming and all the normal duties of a crew member whilst having the opportunity to learn about weather, routing, navigation, boat handling and many more according to your interest and experience. Above all, it should be funny and recreational for everyone.
If English is not your native language and you don’t know the English sailing terms, don’t worry. You will learn the necessary vocabulary in no time while on board.
Travel logistics
Start: Fly into Cesária Évora Airport, São Pedro (VXE). Most flights to Cape Verde are with layover in Lisbon but you might be able to find direct connections (e.g. charter flights with TUI). You can take a taxi or bus from the airport to get to the Marina Mindelo (~9km).

In Canaries you can expect an average temperature of 23°C during the day and 17°C at night.
There is almost no rain in Cape Verde and Canaries in April. You may expect a few isolated showers during the whole trip.
Sea temperature
Sea water is warm during the entire year in Cape Verde with an average of 23°C in April. In Canaries you can expect an average of 20°C. So, you will be able to enjoy swimming in the ocean.
Wind and sea state
Wind conditions in Cape Verde and Canaries are perfect for sailing due to the trade winds blowing all year round with an average of 5 Bft in April. The islands topography can greatly affect the strength and direction of winds in certain areas.
There is a warm, dry, oceanic climate and the sun shines 350 days a year. The weather is characterized by the trade winds governed to a great extent by the activity and strength of the Azores High.
There is a weak south west going current and stronger tidal streams between islands.
The route is divided into several passages with night sailing. You will receive a certificate of passage to prove your sea time for sailing licenses. You will be an active member of the crew and we will provide practical trainings on board to everyone that will be interested to improve sailing skills.

The skipper is an instructor and will find it difficult not to teach or coach to anyone that shows the slightest bit of interest.
RYA qualifying passages

The opportunity will also be there to act as a skipper (with guidance if needed from the skipper) for your RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or RYA Yachtmaster Offshore qualifying 60M passages.
The Atlantic passage from Cape Verde to Canaries can be used as a qualifying passage for RYA Yachtmaster Ocean, if that’s what you need. You can get your mileage and required celestial sights during the trip.

10 April: Joining day – Mindelo on São Vicente island
We will spend the first day preparing and victualling the yacht, going over the safety routines and practices, getting up to speed with the boat and learning or refreshing all the basic sailing skills before we embark on the journey. Once we slip the lines there will be plenty of occasions to practice tacking, gybing, reefing, boat handling under engine and all the other key skills we must have.
Mindelo Marina
Mindelo city
São Vicente is home to Mindelo, the cultural capital of the islands and where you’ll hear music all day long and be able to explore the city’s fine architecture. The island is home to some of Cape Verde’s greatest musicians, writers and thinkers.
Baia do Tarrafal on Santo Antão island (~28 NM / 6h of sailing)
Santo Antão is home to some of the most spectacular scenery you’ll see anywhere on earth and it still feels relatively untouched. An island where towering green peaks and fertile craters meet cliff-hanging towns. Santo Antão offers the opportunity to embark on hiking and sightseeing explorations, in a place relatively untouched by tourism.

Before we head to Canaries, we will anchor in the scenic Baia do Tarrafal, very welcoming to visiting sailors.
El Hierro island (~760 NM / 8 days of non-stop sailing)
After a day in Santo Antão, we will embark on the open Atlantic passage. This will be a non-stop 8 day ocean passage to Canaries (El Hierro island).
Puerto de la Estaca Marina
El Hierro landscape
El Hierro is the smallest island in the Canary Islands. Of the seven, it is the furthest west, but it shares the same climate as the others. A paradise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Life, in El Hierro, is different. It’s special, it’s unique. It’s an island to enjoy with all five senses, to discover its landscapes and feel its peace. El Hierro is an island with soul.
Since the year 2000 El Hierro is a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The wish was that all energy of the island should be generated completely self-sufficient from own wind power. So far, one third of this expectation has been fulfilled.
It is worth to rent a car to visit this scenic island. A visit to Villa de Valverde town is recommended. It is a social, administrative and religious centre of the island and was founded at the end of the 15th Century, during the initial stages of the conquest of the Canaries.
Tenerife island (~110 NM / 1 day of sailing)
Tenerife is the island of thousand experiences. If there’s one thing Tenerife can brag about, it’s extraordinary natural spaces.
Tenerife
Puerto Deportivo Radazul
Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary Islands. The island is an idyll with a remarkable variety of geographic options from other-worldly desert landscapes to lush green mountains to stunning seascapes. The island’s varied topography offers a plethora of options for the adventurer. From beach to forest, explore banana plantation filled valleys, marvel at lunar landscapes, or hike through beautiful caverns.
22 April: Finishing day, Puerto Deportivo Radazul on Tenerife island
We will finish our trip in Radaluz. It’s always a strange feeling to pack up, say farewell to new friends and prepare to head back home.
El Teide (Natural World Heritage Site)
Tenerife beaches
If you have one day to spare after the trip, we can highly recommend renting a car and visiting Teide National Park. As well as being home to the impressive volcanic structure that is the Teide, the highest peak in Spain (3 715m) and a Natural World Heritage Site, you will find here what is possibly the most striking scenery you have ever seen. These are some of the most spectacular volcanic manifestations on the planet.

Atlantic Canary
Serinus canaria
Endemic to Macaronesia: the Azores, Madeira, and the Canary Islands, where it occurs in most habitat types at all elevations. Apparently resident on every significant island in all three archipelagos.
An introduced population is well-established on Midway Atoll in Hawaii’s Northwestern Chain the mid-Pacific, where it was introduced around 1910. The introduction of rats to Midway in the 1940s nearly eliminated it, but a few survived. With the eventual extermination of rats in the late 1990s, the canary population rebounded into the thousands. The Midway population is derived from cagebirds that were selectively bred to be pale yellow, but a few streaked individuals of more natural phenotypes sometimes emerge from the domesticated gene pool.
Identification
A heavily streaked, sparrow-like finch that is largely grayish with variable amounts of yellow.
Males typically have extensive yellow or orange staining on the face, breast, and rump, and smaller, duller patches on the wings and back.
Females are mostly plain-gray with blackish streaks and usually small yellow or yellowish patches on the face, rump, and sometimes duller patches on the breast, wings, and back.
Voice. The song is renowned for being sweet and melodic. It has a variable structure and usually consists of several chipping, warbling, or babbling phrases in succession, often repeating a phrase once or several times before moving on to another: Typical flight or contact calls are a single inflected note, or sometimes a note that reverberates:
Cf. European Serin. European Serin overlaps with Atlantic Canary in the Canary Islands and has been recorded as a vagrant on the Azores and Madeira. The two species differ vocally but are very similar-looking. Some individuals may not be identifiable by visible features alone, but their typical plumages are distinguishable:
Voice: European Serin’s song is described as wheezy and unmusical, and its call is a buzzy trill. Atlantic Canary is renowned for the sweetness of its singing. Its call may be buzzy at times, but not usually.
Overall Shape: Atlantic Canary has a longer tail and proportionately smaller-looking head than European Serin. Conversely, the serin appears large-headed and short-tailed.
Male Head Pattern: Male European Serin typically has a large dark cheek patch bordered by a bright yellow brow-stripe. Male Atlantic Canary varies widely, with some individuals being extensively saturated with yellow and others being grayer, and most have some gray on the cheek and some yellow on the brow. This distinction is mostly reliable for identifying male canaries that do not have the serin’s pattern. Individuals that have the serin’s pattern could be either species
Female Breast Pattern: Female European Serin has a boldly streaked breast, whereas female Atlantic Canary’s breast is either indistinctly streaked or unstreaked.
Female Rump: Female European Serin has an unstreaked pale-yellow rump patch. The typical female Atlantic Canary has a vaguely streaked and largely yellow rump. This distinction is rarely useful in the field, as both have yellow rumps and the difference is one of degree that is difficult to evaluate.
Bill Color and Shape: Some identification references contrast the bills of European Serin and Atlantic Canary, characterizing the serin’s bill as blunt and gray and the canary’s as longer and pinker. These contrasts may be accurate in many cases, but not always—the canary’s bill can also appear blunt and gray.
Notes
Monotypic species. Also known as the Island Canary or simply the Canary.

Birds used as breeders must be healthy, active and vigorous. In addition to sick and weak individuals, birds younger than 10 months and older than 4 years should not be used for breeding. It is not recommended to resort to inbreeding, that is, mating of closely related individuals. As a rule, as a result of such mating, weak, non-viable offspring are obtained.
Much attention should be paid to the diet of canaries, as described in the previous chapter.
Beginning canary breeders should be aware that not only females, but also males must be in good physical shape. Therefore, before letting kenars into nesting cages, they should be let out for walks as often as possible. This is especially true for canaries of song breeds, which are kept in small single cages while learning to sing, which does not have a very good effect on the physical data of the bird.
Breeding of canaries should be started in March-April, when daylight hours noticeably increase and the first greenery necessary for the younger generation appears. However, modern canary breeders get offspring from birds at almost any time of the year. For this, electric lighting is used, with which you can daily lengthen daylight hours by 1–1.5 hours per week, gradually bringing it up to 14–15 hours per day. When breeding canaries, the illumination of the room in the morning and evening hours should be close to the illumination in the daytime.
One of the most important moments in breeding canaries is the selection of a pair. The fact is that partners must match each other in terms of breed characteristics – tune, exterior, color, etc. It is not recommended to make a pair of birds of different breed directions – color and song. In addition, spawners must be free from congenital physical defects – crooked paws and toes, deformed beak, etc.
Birds should be mated only if they are physiologically ready for nesting. This is very easy to identify by their appearance and behavior.
Readiness for reproduction can manifest itself in different ways. Females usually behave very aroused during this period. If there are several of them in one cage, quarrels often break out. Another sign of the female’s readiness for reproduction is the desire to build a nest – the female begins to carry blades of grass, feathers, scraps of paper in her beak and collect all this in different parts of the cage.
You can accurately determine the degree of female readiness for mating by placing finely chopped gauze or cotton wool on the bottom of the cage. If the bird begins to vigorously pull her beak, then it’s time to let her into the nesting cage with the kenar (males are placed there a week earlier than females).
External examination of canaries can also determine whether they are ready for breeding. Shortly before mating, the so-called brood spot appears on the female’s abdomen, which is a patch of bare skin that increases in size over time. The tail of the female in the period of readiness for mating strongly protrudes forward, noticeably thickens and is compared with the abdomen.
A brood spot on the abdomen of a female canary
Males also become restless. They constantly jump from perch to perch, flap their wings and make calls. The singing of kenars also changes dramatically – at this time their repertoire becomes less diverse, and unpleasant sharp and loud sounds appear in the song.
This text is an introductory fragment.

The Portuguese don’t much like the cold and you can tell from the increasing number of smiles in April that they are looking forward to the brighter, sunnier, warmer days on the horizon. It’s time to ditch the coat and perhaps swap sweaters for lighter layers (but still keep an umbrella handy!).
In Lisbon, the average daily temperature is 59°F (15°C), with highs of up to 68°F (20°C), though showers are still plentiful, with around seven days of rain. Porto is only a shade cooler, with highs of up to 64°F (18°C) and nine rainy days. Mildest of all is the Algarve in the country’s south, with an average temperature of 61°F (16°C) and highs of 73°F (23°C) – warm enough for T-shirts but not for swimming in the sea just yet.
Crowds & Costs
While the crowds of summer are still a long way off, visitor numbers start to steadily rise in April, particularly in hotspots like the Algarve, where milder temperatures and the first proper rays of sunshine are beginning to make the beaches seem more tempting.
The ever-popular cities of Lisbon and Porto are upping their game, too, with longer days and longer opening hours at sights and attractions making exploring that bit more appealing. You can still pick up some decent deals on flights and hotels at this time of year, with the exception of Easter week when schools are on vacation and rates are at a premium.

Get Started
Where to Go
April is a fabulous month to slow tour Portugal. The Algarve in the south is now bursting with wildflowers and this is wonderful time to go hiking along its ravishing cliff-backed, gold-sanded coastline, or to take a road trip through its hilly, cork oak-wooded interior, stopping at little villages en route. The blissfully peaceful Alentejo is a great alternative for a trip focused on gentle rambles, farm stays, and hearty, home-cooked food.
While you’ll need to be prepared for the odd shower, mild (but not too hot) days make this prime time to explore some of the country’s cities and towns on foot. Beyond the obvious appeal of Lisbon and Porto, check out the likes of spiritual capital Braga, with the country’s oldest cathedral and an extraordinary clutch of baroque churches; the walled medieval town of Évora, the crown jewel in the Alentejo, with its Roman remains and fortress-like cathedral; and the historic, high-spirited university city of Coimbra.
What to Do
If you’re into the outdoors, this is the month you’ve been waiting for, with longer, brighter, warmer days for hiking, cycling and more adventurous pursuits such as canyoning, climbing, kayaking, and diving.
You could tackle a long-distance trail (in part or in full), such as the Portuguese leg of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, running 371 miles (598km) from Santiago in Spain to Lisbon, say, or the 186-mile (300km) Via Algarviana down south for a beautiful blend of coast and countryside. Or strike out along the Alentejo’s 75-mile (120km) Rota Vicentina Fisherman’s Trail, revealing a staggeringly lovely, little-known section of the Atlantic coast.
While crowds are still relatively thin on the ground, April is a good month to head to popular Unesco World Heritage sights, such as Sintra near Lisbon, a fairy-tale town of whimsical castles and palaces, Braga in the far north, where a striking baroque staircase sweeps up to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, and the exquisite Manueline monastery of Batalha in central Portugal.
April Events
Semana Santa Holy Week (the week preceding Easter) is a big deal in Portugal, and you’ll find fairs, festivals and captivating religious parades (costumed, torchlit and cross-bearing) keeping the Catholic faith up and down the country. The most striking of these is in Braga, Portugal’s spiritual center, with elaborately decorated churches, Gregorian chants and a soul-stirring parade of barefoot, black-hooded penitents bearing torches as they shuffle through the medieval streets.
Ovibeja Showcasing the Alentejo region at its rural best, Beja pulls out all the stops for this huge, five-day agricultural fair in late April, with displays of prized animals, workshops, exhibitions and, naturally, plenty of excellent farm-to-fork food.
International Chocolate Festival There’s no better time to visit the delightful medieval walled town of Óbidos than late April, when it is the backdrop for this irresistible festival, with chocolate tastings, cookery classes, sculptures and more.

Munich, Germany for the Springfest Frühlingsfest
23rd of April 2020 – 11th of May 2020
If you missed Oktoberfest but you are looking for a similar experience, Munich hosts Frühlingsfest in May. This is a springtime beer festival as fun as Oktoberfest but not as busy or overly touristic. Established in 1965, Frühlingsfest happens on a much smaller scale, with only two large beer tents, whereas the Oktoberfest features fourteen tents.
This is the only major difference, since the spring festival takes place on the same site as Oktoberfest, with the same joyful atmosphere and abundance of fun activities. Needless to say, if you go to Munich in May, you’ll experience the best facet of the Bavarian capital and get the chance to bond with its fun-loving residents.
Outside the festival site, there are plenty of beer gardens to visit where you can sample beer from local breweries. The weather is also lovely so you can spend some time exploring Munich, one of Germany’s most interesting cities, where you can find loads of things to do.

17th of May 2020
The Royal Palace in Oslo
May is an excellent time to visit Norway, not just because the weather is lovely, but also because it is a great time to get a good glimpse into the Norwegian lifestyle by witnessing the National Holiday celebrations. On the 17th of May, Norwegians celebrate the Oslo Constitution Day.
On this date in 1814, Norway was officially declared an independent nation, but the National Holiday is less about nationalism and more about celebrating the country’s unique heritage and culture with an open-air party. The most important moment of this special day is the children’s parade when thousands of Norwegian children take over the streets dressed in traditional folk costumes, accompanied by marching bands.
The spectacular festivity includes people of all ages and the atmosphere is incredibly welcoming and joyful. If you visit Oslo in this period, don’t forget that there are some amazing cultural and architectural sights in the Norwegian capital, including The Viking Ship Museum, the Oslo Opera House, the National Gallery, and the 13th-century Akershus Fortress.
Gardens of England – stately homes with gardens in Full Bloom
country old house of Lanhydrock, Bodmin, UK
Although England is known for its unpleasant weather, surprisingly, the country is one of the best places to visit in Europe in May. With their centuries-old preoccupation for mastering the art of gardening, the English have some of the finest gardens in Europe and there is no better time to take a tour of the most beautiful English gardens than May.
It’s safe to say that this is the month when flowers are in full bloom and can provide the most colorful backdrop to your photos. Moreover, hundreds of charming historic English gardens are open to the general public.
Designed in varying styles by top horticultural experts, the gardens combine lush landscapes with intoxicating fragrances and vibrant colors. Some of the most famous English gardens are Chelsea Physic Garden, Bodnant Gardens, Buscot Park, and Tresco Abbey Gardens.
Spain for the Camino de Santiago
Camino de Santiago has been a popular pilgrimage since the 9th century. Thousands of pilgrims make the journey on foot or by bicycle today, finding the experience one of the most fulfilling of their lives. Traveling the entirety of the Camino de Santiago from the Pyrenees Mountains to Santiago de Compostela takes around a month, but you are free to walk only the chunks that are most convenient to you.
During the summer months, Camino de Santiago is extremely crowded and scorching hot, so May is one of the best times to go on this popular pilgrimage. You will avoid the crowds, yet still, get plenty of company on the road.
Plus, wildflowers come out in this period and the lush vegetation will offer you a respite from the distractions of city life. In May, the picturesque landscapes of Northern Spain are even lovelier than usual and the weather is also very pleasant.
Bath, England for the Bath Festival
15th of May 2020 until the 24th of May 2020
Bath Abbey
Due to its preserved Roman heritage, Bath is one of the most unique spots to visit in England, and if you want to explore this charming historic city, it’s best to go in May when the city really comes to life thanks to the Bath Festival.
In 2017, the Bath International Music Festival merged with the Bath Literature Festival, creating this new eclectic hybrid known as the Bath Festival. A wide celebration of music and literature with over 130 events, the festival brings to the stage classical virtuosos, world musicians, and folk and jazz singers, both local and international.
Besides numerous concerts, the program includes film screenings, exhibitions, talks, and dance performances, many of them free. On top of that, Bath in itself is an amazing place, where you can visit the Roman Baths, a historic spa spanning millennia, the medieval Bath Abbey, and other architectural gems.

Madeira, Portugal for the Flower Parade
30th of April 2020 – May 24th, 2020
Madeira Island, which is a small Portuguese island situated in the North Atlantic Ocean is a perfect destination for any season, but one of the best months to visit is May. This is the month when the island celebrates spring, and its famous, beautiful Flower Festival.
Madeira Island Flower Parade, or Festa da Flor, takes place each spring, and this year the exact dates are April 30th to May 24th. For a couple of weeks, every May, the island looks even more beautiful than ever. Small towns, as well as the main city – Funchal – are beautifully decorated with flower arrangements. There are concerts, performances, and exhibitions and on one of the main streets of Funchal, you will find a local flower market selling flower bulbs, exotic fruit, and local food and drinks.
The highlight of the festival is, however, the main parade, called Cortejo Alegórico. Local residents, adults and children alike, parade in their carefully prepared flower costumes through the main avenue of Funchal. They are dancing, singing and presenting their carefully prepared choreographies and amazing parade platforms and installations. The atmosphere is great, and both the spectators as participants are truly enjoying this special event. It is a beautiful and unique experience and it is worth to see it at least in a lifetime.
Athens, Greece
When considering May holiday destinations in Europe, Athens should be one of your top choices. Since in the summer Athens is unbelievably hot, spring is the best time to enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine without suffering due to extreme heat.
In May, Athens is sunny and warm, and there are no overwhelming crowds of tourists to navigate through. Also on the plus side, the accommodation and airfare are much cheaper. While there might be an occasionally chilly or rainy day, for the most part, the weather will be consistently good.
The long hours of daylight are a huge advantage since you will have plenty of time to explore the complex and rich heritage of Athens. Whether you prefer museums and archaeological sites, or bustling markets and scenic views, every experience is much more pleasant in May.

Cruise the Norwegian Fjords
The Norwegian Fjords are a major attraction for nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and in general for people who love breathtaking scenery. Going on a cruise in May opens up amazing possibilities because the natural sights are more impressive in the spring when trees and flowers are in blossom and contrast with the snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and waterfalls.
Although it’s still cold in May, avoiding the high season is a major plus when cruising the fjords because Norway is known for being highly expensive. Some of the most picturesque places are Stavanger, Flåm, Hardangerfjord, Geirangerfjord, and Bergen, and there is a wide range of cruises to choose from, from luxury to budget-friendly, with various lengths. The cruises start running in May and since they’re incredibly popular, going at the beginning of the season will be less busy.
The Scottish Highlands
Eilean Donean Castle in Spring
Rain is ubiquitous in Scotland, but April and May are the driest months, so if you plan your visit for May, you’re going to enjoy the best weather and the most daylight hours. Although some spring showers are inevitable, the landscapes in the Scottish Highlands are gorgeous in May, with roaring waterfalls, green grass fields, and colorful wildflowers.
The scenic nature combined with the amazing historical heritage of the place and the renowned friendliness and hospitality of the Scottish will make your journey memorable. Going in May is overall the wisest decision you can make if you want to explore the best hiking trails undisturbed by the crowds.

In the middle of spring, the Black Sea looks especially attractive, because its entire coastline is blooming. Tourists come here for beautiful scenery and long-awaited warmth.
The weather in April in the resorts is warm, the average temperatures reach about +20 – +22 degrees. It is a little sad that it often rains this month, but it is they that contribute to the riot of colors of local vegetation and flowers. It is for the abundance of colors that it is worth coming to the coast at this time. nine0004
Resting on the Black Sea in April, especially in the Crimea, you should definitely visit the Nikitinsky Botanical Garden, where the tulip parade begins. You will not see such an abundance of this spring flower anywhere else. Beautiful flowers here can be seen not only in the botanical garden, but also in ordinary parks and squares.
Attracted to rest on the Black Sea in April and affordable prices. Due to the fact that the beach season will come only at the end of May, many hotels are only half full, or even less, and in order to attract long-awaited tourists, the cost of vouchers is an order of magnitude lower than in summer. Especially popular at this time are hotels with heated or indoor pools. Thanks to their presence, guests can swim to their heart’s content, admiring the still cold sea. nine0004
Resting on the Black Sea in April, you can go to the mountains. At this time, the scenery here is especially fascinating. For peace of mind, it is best to take an experienced guide with you, who will show you the most interesting places. If you are relaxing in the Gelendzhik region, you can see the famous dolmens.
For assistance in organizing your trip, it is better to turn to a reliable company which is “Alean”. Competent managers will select the best accommodation option for you and advise you on entertainment according to the season. nine0004

Recreation in the Crimea
Crimea today is diverse, relatively inexpensive and will not leave any tourist indifferent. Most vacationers come here for the sake of the clean and warm sea and beautiful nature, while others, on the contrary, want to see the sights of the region.
With the onset of warm weather, travelers are trying to go on a trip as soon as possible. After a long winter, I want to go to warmer climes. You can see how nature wakes up, meadows bloom in April in the Crimea. Rest at this time is especially beautiful here. Cool sea air mixed with the aroma of a mountain forest will give a lot of positive emotions and improve health. nine0004
Why is Crimea so attractive in April?
Many go to the Crimea in April as soon as the weather is sunny. So, you can visit museums and sights in a comfortable environment, while there is still no influx of tourists and the sweltering summer heat.
April is the best time for outdoor activities and educational tourism. A variety of excursion programs, hiking trails, festivals – this and much more awaits you here. It is also nice to take a walk in the flowering gardens or go rollerblading in the park with children, and then sit in a coastal cafe and drink tea from aromatic herbs. nine0004
Where is it better and cheaper to stay in Crimea in April?
Resting in the Crimea in April, it is best to rent housing in the private sector, this is both profitable and saving your budget. Also, the private sector is located directly by the sea, and the owners of households provide decent comfort and coziness.

A very colorful suburb of Yalta, close to the center (by car), to the sea – within easy reach. Everything is green, surrounded by vineyards and cypresses. Very picturesque road – winding, with descents and ascents. You feel yourself in Italy or Greece – such small well-groomed houses, a landscape: on one side of the mountain, on the other – the sea!

Gran Canaria: the island of sun and mild climate in the Atlantic Ocean
The Canary Islands lie not far from the African continent, which gives them an excellent climate throughout the year. That is why they attract hordes of tourists who want to enjoy the sun and sandy beaches. Gran Canaria is the third largest island of the Canary Islands, boasting diverse vegetation, a hilly interior and a desert in the south that stretches all the way to the sea.
Gran Canaria is one of those islands in the archipelago that is geographically closer to Africa. It boasts mild winters and pleasant summers, as well as a diverse landscape full of contrasts. A tropical forest grows on the island, and at the same time we can also admire fruit tree plantations and vineyards. In the interior, in the hills, you can admire snow-capped peaks, and in the south of the island, you can walk in the Maspalomas desert. The island of volcanic selection has a lot to offer, with its wide range of beaches satisfying both lovers of rocky slopes and those who swear by soft sand.
Gran Canaria: when to visit it?
The best time to visit Gran Canaria if you want pleasant summer temperatures is between July and September. Due to the mild winters and subtropical climate, the island can be visited all year round. Wind is frequent on the island, the north brings cold and moist air, while the south brings warm and dry air. The average temperature is around 22 °C, even up to 27 °C in summer.
Photo: Unsplash/Reiseuhu
Gran Canaria: what to see?
Wondering how many days will be enough to visit the island? The answer lies between five and seven days, which will be perfect for tasting authentic cuisine and a pleasant climate. During this time, relax on one of the beaches with golden sand, surrounded by the beautiful waves of the Atlantic. The second largest beach on the island is located in the south, in the area Masalomas, famous for its sand dunes reminiscent of the Sahara.
You can also visit them yourself, but since the desert is considered a sensitive ecosystem, stick to the marked trails. The starting point for visiting the dunes is Playa del Inglés. The interior of Gran Canaria is a stark contrast to the desert. The island of volcanic origin offers many attractions, one of which is Roque Nublo, a UNESCO-protected volcanic rock that was formed more than 4.5 million years ago.
Photo: Unsplash/Quinten Braem
The surroundings offer plenty of opportunities for hiking with beautiful views of the Tejeda Mountains. Gran Canaria is truly perfect for nature lovers. They will also be happy to turn in Jardín Botánico Viera y Clavijo, which is located in the northeast of the island. The botanical garden is home to more than 500 species of plants that are endemic to the island area, and you can also find some species of cacti and plants from nearby island areas. You will get the most out of the island by wandering around and exploring its coastal towns. Puerto Mogan is a charming town in the southern part of the island. An oasis of peace with white houses, beautiful gardens and canals is perfect for all romantics.
You won’t be bored even in the main town, Las Palmas. Immerse yourself in the pulse of Plaza de Santa Ana with its cathedral and visit the Museum of Sacred Art or explore San Martín Centro de Cultura Contemporánea and Casa de Colón, which are dedicated to Christopher Columbus. Even if cultural attractions don’t tempt you too much, you won’t be bored in Gran Canaria. Lovers of water sports, from sailing, windsurfing to diving, will also get their money’s worth.
Photo: Unsplash/Reiseuhu
Gran Canaria: how to explore it?
One great way to explore the island freely is by renting a car. If you don’t like that, then choose the buses that offer excellent connections between Las Palmas and the southern tourist areas. You can also move around Las Palmas by bus, a one-way ticket costs 1.40 euros. You can also choose between taxis, you can find a free one by looking for a sign that says “libre”. Cycling is also a good idea, as most airlines will transport your bike without any problems, or you can rent one on the island.

We base the humidity comfort level on the dew point, as it determines whether perspiration will evaporate from the skin, thereby cooling the body. Lower dew points feel drier and higher dew points feel more humid. Unlike temperature, which typically varies significantly between night and day, dew point tends to change more slowly, so while the temperature may drop at night, a muggy day is typically followed by a muggy night.
The chance that a given day will be muggy in Los Gigantes is essentially constant during April, remaining around 0% throughout.
For reference, on September 1, the muggiest day of the year, there are muggy conditions 47% of the time, while on January 14, the least muggy day of the year, there are muggy conditions 0% of the time.

Definitions of the growing season vary throughout the world, but for the purposes of this report, we define it as the longest continuous period of non-freezing temperatures (≥ 32°F) in the year (the calendar year in the Northern Hemisphere, or from July 1 until June 30 in the Southern Hemisphere).
Temperatures in Los Gigantes are sufficiently warm year round that it is not entirely meaningful to discuss the growing season in these terms. We nevertheless include the chart below as an illustration of the distribution of temperatures experienced throughout the year.

Temperature and Dew Point
There are 2 weather stations near enough to contribute to our estimation of the temperature and dew point in Los Gigantes.
For each station, the records are corrected for the elevation difference between that station and Los Gigantes according to the International Standard Atmosphere , and by the relative change present in the MERRA-2 satellite-era reanalysis between the two locations.
The estimated value at Los Gigantes is computed as the weighted average of the individual contributions from each station, with weights proportional to the inverse of the distance between Los Gigantes and a given station.
The stations contributing to this reconstruction are:
Tenerife South Airport (GCTS, 83%, 21 mi, southeast, 131 ft elevation change)
La Palma Airport (GCLA, 17%, 62 mi, northwest, 30 ft elevation change)
To get a sense of how much these sources agree with each other, you can view a comparison of Los Gigantes and the stations that contribute to our estimates of its temperature history and climate. Please note that each source’s contribution is adjusted for elevation and the relative change present in the MERRA-2 data.
Other Data
All data relating to the Sun’s position (e.g., sunrise and sunset) are computed using astronomical formulas from the book, Astronomical Algorithms 2nd Edition , by Jean Meeus.
All other weather data, including cloud cover, precipitation, wind speed and direction, and solar flux, come from NASA’s MERRA-2 Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis . This reanalysis combines a variety of wide-area measurements in a state-of-the-art global meteorological model to reconstruct the hourly history of weather throughout the world on a 50-kilometer grid.
Land Use data comes from the Global Land Cover SHARE database , published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
Elevation data comes from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) , published by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Names, locations, and time zones of places and some airports come from the GeoNames Geographical Database .

The information on this site is provided as is, without any assurances as to its accuracy or suitability for any purpose. Weather data is prone to errors, outages, and other defects. We assume no responsibility for any decisions made on the basis of the content presented on this site.
We draw particular cautious attention to our reliance on the MERRA-2 model-based reconstructions for a number of important data series. While having the tremendous advantages of temporal and spatial completeness, these reconstructions: (1) are based on computer models that may have model-based errors, (2) are coarsely sampled on a 50 km grid and are therefore unable to reconstruct the local variations of many microclimates, and (3) have particular difficulty with the weather in some coastal areas, especially small islands.
We further caution that our travel scores are only as good as the data that underpin them, that weather conditions at any given location and time are unpredictable and variable, and that the definition of the scores reflects a particular set of preferences that may not agree with those of any particular reader.
