Simulated historical climate & weather data for Palma de Mallorca Airport

The meteoblue climate diagrams are based on 30 years of hourly weather model simulations and available for every place on Earth. They give good indications of typical climate patterns and expected conditions (temperature, precipitation, sunshine and wind). The simulated weather data have a spatial resolution of approximately 30 km and may not reproduce all local weather effects, such as thunderstorms, local winds, or tornadoes, and local differences as they occur in urban, mountainous, or coastal areas.

You can explore the climate for any location like the Amazon rainforest, West-Africa savannas, Sahara desert, Siberian Tundra or the Himalaya.

30 years of hourly historical weather data for Palma de Mallorca Airport can be purchased with history+. Download variables like temperature, wind, clouds and precipitation as CSV for any place on Earth. The last 2 weeks of past weather data for Palma de Mallorca Airport are available for free evaluation here.

    Average temperatures and precipitation

The “mean daily maximum” (solid red line) shows the maximum temperature of an average day for every month for Palma de Mallorca Airport. Likewise, “mean daily minimum” (solid blue line) shows the average minimum temperature. Hot days and cold nights (dashed red and blue lines) show the average of the hottest day and coldest night of each month of the last 30 years. For vacation planning, you can expect the mean temperatures, and be prepared for hotter and colder days. Wind speeds are not displayed per default, but can be enabled at the bottom of the graph.

The precipitation chart is useful to plan for seasonal effects such as monsoon climate in India or wet season in Africa. Monthly precipitations above 150mm are mostly wet, below 30mm mostly dry. Note: Simulated precipitation amounts in tropical regions and complex terrain tend to be lower than local measurements.

    Cloudy, sunny, and precipitation days

Note: In tropical climates like in Malaysia or Indonesia the number of precipitation days may be overestimated by a factor up to 2.

    Maximum temperatures

The maximum temperature diagram for Palma de Mallorca Airport displays how many days per month reach certain temperatures. Dubai, one of the hottest cities on earth, has almost none days below 40°C in July. You can also see the cold winters in Moscow with a few days that do not even reach -10°C as daily maximum.

    Precipitation amounts

The precipitation diagram for Palma de Mallorca Airport shows on how many days per month, certain precipitation amounts are reached. In tropical and monsoon climates, the amounts may be underestimated.

    Wind speed

The diagram for Palma de Mallorca Airport shows the days per month, during which the wind reaches a certain speed. An interesting example is the Tibetan Plateau, where the monsoon creates steady strong winds from December to April, and calm winds from June to October.

Wind speed units can be changed in the preferences (top right).

    Wind rose

The wind rose for Palma de Mallorca Airport shows how many hours per year the wind blows from the indicated direction. Example SW: Wind is blowing from South-West (SW) to North-East (NE). Cape Horn, the southernmost land point of South America, has a characteristic strong west-wind, which makes crossings from East to West very difficult especially for sailing boats.

    General information

Since 2007, meteoblue has been archiving weather model data. In 2014 we started to calculate weather models with historical data from 1985 onwards and generated a continuous 30-year global history with hourly weather data. The climate diagrams are the first simulated climate data-set made public on the net. Our weather history covers any place on earth at any given time regardless of availability of weather stations.

The data is derived from our global NEMS weather model at approximately 30km resolution and cannot reproduce detail local weather effects, such as heat islands, cold air flows, thunderstorms or tornadoes. For locations and events which require very high precision (such as energy generation, insurance, town planning, etc.), we offer high resolution simulations with hourly data through point+, history+ and our API.

What to do in the Canary Islands in April?

April is an ideal month for travelling to the Canary Islands. Depending on the year, it may coincide with the Easter holidays, a fantastic opportunity to discover the so-called islands of “eternal spring”, although in this case it is a spring with hardly any rain.

    Contenido

    Watching whales and other cetaceans

The Canary Islands are one of the best places in the world for watching cetaceans in the wild, as it is a transit area for 23 different species. From sperm whales to long-finned pilot whales, as well as other whales and six different types of dolphins. And precisely the month of April is perfect for sighting a type of Bryde’s whales, a species of cetacean, called Eden’s whales or Pygmy-form Bryde’s whales, grey in colour with three prominent medial ridges, a yellowish-white belly and a tall dorsal fin.

To see these species in the wild, all you have to do is take the boats bearing the ‘barco azul’ or blue boat emblem, which guarantee their safety. Although swimming with them or feeding them is not permitted, seeing them in their natural habitat, so close to shore, is an amazing experience.

    Contenido

    Enjoy quiet beaches

April is one of the most highly recommended months for enjoying a holiday on the Canary Islands, with long, sunny days and refreshing swims on the beach. The crystal-clear waters of Caletón Blanco (Lanzarote), the spectacular Puertito de Lobos (20 minutes by boat from Fuerteventura) or Charco del Conde (La Gomera) are perfect for spending the day as a couple, with friends or family, or even alone. There are beaches for everyone, on all of the islands.

Natural pools are also a superb alternative for plunging into the sea and ‘savouring’ the quiet and relaxation that reigns on the islands. They are like little spas created by nature and sheltered from the waves. Genuine natural jacuzzis you simply cannot miss.

    Contenido

Fiesta de los Pastores in El Hierro

Every year, at the end of April, and always on a Saturday or Sunday, La Dehesa (El Hierro) holds the Fiesta de Los Pastores, or Shepherds’ Fiesta, an ancient ceremony which is simple but very emotive, going back to 1577, when shepherds on El Hierro built a church to house the ‘Virgen de los Reyes’ (Our Lady of the Kings), who had hitherto been in the cave of El Caracol or ‘Cueva de la Virgen’.

The shepherds commemorate the arrival of the Virgen de los Reyes, adorned with their ‘sticks’ in a procession steeped in symbolism, accompanied by traditional dancers of El Hierro. Livestock are blessed during the festivity, and it concludes with a meal for everyone who attends.

    Contenido

    April, wine month

Wine gastronomy and culture is becoming increasingly important in the Canary Islands. One good example of this is Abril mes del vino (April, wine month), which takes place in the rural village of Tegueste (Tenerife) from 1st to 30th April. A food and wine fair that has become increasingly consolidated year after year, where one can discover regional produce, try local cuisine by following the wine and tapas route, or visit emblematic places on guided tours.

Weather in the Canary Islands – Weather Blog

The Canary Islands are a beautiful, well-known archipelago off the coast of Africa. They’re part of Spain, but enjoy a warmer climate than the mainland. Popular destinations include Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote, but there are a total of seven islands, all wonderful tourist destinations in their own right.

The weather in the Canary Islands is famous for being the sunniest in Europe, offering mild temperatures year-round. They offer a wealth of natural attractions, including volcanoes, national parks, and of course miles and miles of beautiful beaches to relax and play on. All islands also offer delicious foods and are well-known for their spices and delicious tapas.

When should you visit the Canary Islands?

All seven islands have a subtropical climate, meaning they’re mild the entire year. There is an abundance of sunshine year-round and never very much rain. The weather in the Canary Islands is known for being very comfortable. November is the wettest month of the year, when you may get more precipitation than usual, so this is one month to avoid when planning your stay. Temperatures generally range from around 15C to 26C, so even winter is a lovely time to visit.

There is a difference in climate amongst the islands, even given the generally wonderful Canaries weather, with the higher altitude, mountainous ones getting slightly more rain and wind than their flatter counterparts. For example, Lanzarote has an almost desert-like climate, and Tenerife is well known for being temperate all year long. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote tend to be cloudier and have more wind, while Gran Canaria and Tenerife are generally milder. The higher altitude areas of the islands also tend to be more humid and cloudy, a phenomenon that is actually known as the sea of clouds.

If you love sunshine and hot weather, your best bet for ideal weather in the Canary Islands would be between July and September. However, Tenerife tends to stay lovely and hot well into October, while Gran Canaria’s summer season starts a little earlier in June.

If you’re keen on activities such as hiking and sightseeing, you’d be better advised to visit the Canary Islands between February and April, or later in the year between September and October. Milder temperatures of up to around 20C will make for more enjoyable strolls around the picturesque villages and towns and hikes into the clouds.

What to pack for the Canaries weather?

Light, comfortable layers are your best bet all year-round. Light fabric trousers or capris, skirts, dresses, and thin jumpers or cardigans are good ideas. In the hotter months, you’d also be advised to bring sunscreen and hats, of course, to avoid the more unpleasant side effects of the heat and sun.

Easter in Tenerife – weather in April

    Views 34Posted by

Easter is celebrated in Spain in April. Let’s talk about the weather in Tenerife in the spring.

Tenerife and the Canary Islands – the pearl of Europe. You do not need to fly to the islands for a long time, pay for an expensive flight and other nuances – their location is convenient for all European countries.

In April it becomes warm and sunny on the island of Tenerife, which means that you can already count on a good rest. However, it is too early to draw conclusions – let’s deal with the weather in April.

The weather in Tenerife in April 2020

The weather in Tenerife annually shows relative stability: during the day the thermometer stays around +18, +25 degrees. The sunny day has increased by another couple of hours, at 8 pm you can still walk along the beach and enjoy the sunset.

Perhaps, on the beach, you can only look at the ocean and take beautiful and picturesque pictures against its background. The ocean is still cold in April – its temperature this month is only +18 degrees, which is not comfortable for an ordinary person.

The air in Tenerife warms up unevenly due to the landscape: high mountains in the north, somewhere plains and rocks. The most comfortable conditions for relaxation are in the south: there is little rainfall, there is practically no rain in the east of Tenerife, but in the north an umbrella is useful in April.

Considering that holidays in Tenerife in April are budgetary, and Easter is about to come, tourists, mostly Spaniards, flock to the island in droves. Replace swimming in the ocean in the spring with a heated pool, which is in every good hotel.

Luxury hotels in April will be affordable even for budget tourists. However, there is one caveat: for Easter, Europeans book good rooms in advance, and with the advent of the holiday, hotels can be fully occupied or the most expensive rooms will remain.

Tourists need to book rooms in advance, compare prices and choose the prestigious terms of stay in Tenerife in April.

What to bring to Tenerife in April:

    • Warm jacket. It is warm and sunny in Tenerife during the day, you can safely walk in shorts, a dress and light shoes. But at night it gets cool +18 degrees and the wind blows.

    • Sun protection cream. Despite the fact that April is not yet summer, the sun’s rays are already burning differently than in winter. During the day, you need to smear the skin with a not strong sunscreen or panthenol.

    • Hats. The same story – you need to protect your head from the sun. Hats, caps or just headbands in the spring in Tenerife will come in handy.

    • Swimsuit. Do you want to swim in the pool of a good hotel in the Canary Islands? Be sure to take a couple. Check the hotel description for availability of the heated outdoor pool. We recommend choosing an outdoor pool overlooking the ocean – this will be the best thing to remember your vacation in the Canaries, Tenerife.

Easter in April in Tenerife 2020

Easter in Spain will take place according to all the canons on April 12 on Sunday. Good Friday is celebrated on Friday. Usually they arrange events, costumed performances in Spain, in the Canary Islands a week in advance. See how the Spaniards celebrate masses, because it must be seen. Easter in Spain is the main religious holiday. It is also one of the ways to learn more about the culture and mentality of the Spanish people.

Which area of Tenerife is good for a holiday in April?

The best and most suitable area in Tenerife, where the Holy Week (Semana Santa) is always massively celebrated, is La Laguna.
On the island for Easter, hotel rooms are always booked in both the northern and southern parts of the country, and all because Europeans book hotel rooms in advance.
Tourists are advised not to fly to the Canary Islands on Easter Eve – most likely the hotel rooms have been taken apart, and even for tickets to Tenerife, the price has almost doubled due to high demand.

European Investment Fund pumps €50 million into climate tech VC World Fund

The EU’s European Investment Fund (EIF) has invested €50 million World Fund, one of Europe’s new climate tech VC firms. The capital will be used to support the environment and climate-related ventures and shows the public sector’s commitment to supporting European startups shaping a more planet-positive future.

The omnipresent climate crisis continues to be a topic of daily discussion and its impacts of it are being increasingly felt. From extreme weather patterns which impact lives and businesses to fuel and food shortages, people, economies and environments are all taking a hit as a result.

In this context, Europe’s VC and startup community have been working collaboratively to bring about innovative and promising solutions – and recent reports are showing record-breaking commitments to climate innovation. We recently took an overview of the climate tech investment agenda and found that it’s a tech vertical reaching top priority for the public and private investment space alike.

Now, as the year draws to a close, the EU has made a hefty investment into World Fund – demonstrating that climate tech is a priority, and will continue to be one as we enter 2023.

    The €50 million investment

Founded in 2021, World Fund has raised €50 million from the EIF, with support of the Invest EU programme, to back emerging climate tech across Europe. The Berlin-based VC now has over 200 backers, including  PwC Germany, Ecosia, and the UK Environment Agency’s pension fund.

Marking one of the largest investments made by the EIF into a first-time fund, it’s part of a wider plan to bolster climate tech in Europe – supporting the innovations and entrepreneurs that are improving the outlook for our planet, society and economy for years to come. It reflects the importance of Europe’s startup ecosystem in long-term development plans and is exciting to see this climate agenda picking up pace.

The EIF’s financing into World Fund comes from EIF, the new InvestEU programme and regional mandates from across Europe, including The Netherlands (DFF), Germany (ERP Special Fund), and Bavaria (LfA). As part of this, World Fund will invest in start-ups in each of these regions, alongside Europe.

EIF-CEO Alain Godard said: “The climate tech VC market in Europe is in its infancy, and World Fund stands out as a fund with a strong track record, network, investment hypothesis and experience, as well as scientific and commercial expertise within its founding team. These factors, alongside World Fund’s climate performance potential measurement criteria, have convinced us to back their first fund, with the support of the European Commission and we look forward to supporting the next generation of high-growth climate start-ups across the continent.”

World Fund: Supporting high-potential climate tech

World Fund, established by Daria Saharova, Danijel Višević, Craig Douglas, and Tim Schumacher, was born to exclusively support entrepreneurs and startups shaping a more planet-positive future.

From energy, food, agriculture, and land use, to building materials, manufacturing and transport, World Fund is investing in European climate tech with a climate performance potential (CPP) of at least 100Mt CO2e emission savings per year.

With the pressure on the world’s economy and businesses to decarbonise, World Fund was founded to back and support startups building innovative technologies that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pave the way to a regenerative world. World Fund’s strict criteria for investment aims to back companies using technology to directly reduce emissions, not only to help achieve the world’s climate goals faster.

In order to find these start-ups, World Fund’s team of experts has devised the climate performance potential (CPP) assessment to gauge a start-up’s ability to assist in the fund’s goal of reducing emissions.

So far, the fund has backed ventures like quantum computing leader IQM, space tech startup Space Forge and the precision fermentation platform Planet A Foods.

Danijel Višević, co-founder of World Fund, said: “We’re thrilled to have EIF on board as an anchor LP in fund I, alongside the likes of the UK’s Environment Agency pension fund, PwC Germany and Ecosia. We see this landmark investment – one of the largest EIF has made in a first-time VC fund – as a strong signal that the European Union is serious about tackling the climate crisis. It will help us continue our mission to back the founders that will deliver decarbonisation at scale.”

    EIF: Backing Europe’s SMEs

Established to support Europe’s micro, small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) by helping them to access finance, the EIF is showing its commitment to climate tech and the importance this market has for the future of Europe’s business ecosystem and environmental outlook.

The InvestEU programme provides the European Union with crucial long-term financing by mobilizing significant public and private funds to support sustainable growth. It helps generate additional investments in line with key European priorities, such as the European Green Deal, the digital transition and support for SMEs.

Commissioner for the Economy, Paolo Gentiloni, said: “The new InvestEU programme will help businesses across Europe gain access to the funds they need to innovate, grow and create jobs.

Tenerife is a small and compact island filled with so many different landscapes and terrains so a Tenerife road trip really is the perfect way to see the island and get an alternative look at the island away from the hotel resorts! We spent a super quick 3 days in Tenerife recently and we saw so much of the island in that time and worked out the perfect Tenerife road trip itinerary. A lush laurel forest hugs the dormant volcanos of the island, following the old trails to some of the most stunning natural pools in the world. What to eat in Gran Canaria – The most delicious food in Gran Canaria

I have always believed that food is an important part of travelling. You can learn so much from a destination just by taking a stroll around the local market and learning about which are the most common products sold there. Gran Canaria surprised me with delicious dishes cooked with the freshest local produce grown on the island. The best food in Gran Canaria is based on simple ingredients that highlight flavour instead of a complex cooking process.

A review of Santa Catalina Hotel in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

We recently found cheap flights to Gran Canaria and decided to book a little city break in Las Palmas, the capital city of the island. Because we had saved money on the flights, I decided to go a bit bougie when it came to accommodation. I booked three nights at the oldest hotel in Las Palmas. Here is my review of Santa Catalina Hotel in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. I’d always wanted to stay at a prestigious hotel like this one and I really feel it’s the best place to stay in Las Palmas….

Italy, Denmark, Bulgaria and seven other countries where covid restrictions are being lifted

The closer to the summer season, the more countries lift covid restrictions. We talk about the relaxations that took place in 10 countries in the last week of March. Spoiler: there is good news for those who are “rooting” for Italy.

WHAT IS CANCELED IN BULGARIA, DENMARK, SWITZERLAND AND THE CANARIANS

In Bulgaria will cancel all restrictions related to COVID-19 from April 1including wearing protective masks indoors, maintaining physical distance, limiting the number of people who can attend public events.

At the same time, the requirement to present medical documents (vaccination certificates, certificates of covid, as well as PCR tests) at the border remains in force.

Bulgaria allows citizens of the Russian Federation to enter for tourism purposes. To enter Bulgaria, Russians will need a Sputnik V vaccination certificate in English, or a PCR test for covid no older than 72 hours or an express antigen test no older than 48 hours, or a certificate of a coronavirus infection in English (from the moment of recovery should not exceed 180 days).

Children under 12 do not need a COVID-19 test certificate to enter Bulgaria. You can read more about the sanitary protocols for entering Bulgaria in this material.

Consulates and visa centers of Bulgaria in the Russian Federation accept documents for visas from May 2021.

Denmark has lifted entry restrictions for all travelers from March 29, 2022. All arrivals, regardless of their country of origin and vaccination status, are now allowed to enter Denmark without any health requirements, regardless of the reason for their travel.

Denmark has already simplified its domestic measures to combat COVID-19. Only the requirement to wear a face mask when visiting medical facilities is in force.

On the official websites of the Danish Ministry of Health and other departments, there are no indications of obstacles to the entry of citizens of third countries, including Russians. The Danish Visa Application Centers in Russia accept applications for short-term visas, including those for tourism purposes.

On Canary Islands (Spain), have lifted restrictions on the operation of catering, shops and other public places. The work of night entertainment establishments (night bars, clubs, discos) is being resumed.

Due to the coronavirus, Spain officially does not allow entry to third-country nationals, including Russians, for tourism purposes. This ban is valid until at least April 30. The list of categories of citizens who are allowed to enter Spain for good reasons is published on the website of the Spanish Ministry of Health.

Short-term visas, including those for travel with the purpose of tourism, are issued by the Spanish consulates, but they do not give the right to automatic entry into Spain.

Switzerland , from April 1, abolishes all social and sanitary restrictions that were introduced in connection with COVID-19. In particular, it will no longer be necessary to wear protective masks in public transport and medical institutions.

According to the Swiss government, the coronavirus will not completely disappear, but will become endemic. In this regard, until the spring of 2023, there will be a “transitional phase” in the fight against COVID-19. The authorities do not rule out new waves of covid in the future and a worsening of the epidemiological situation in general, but are ready for an enhanced response.

For Russian citizens, entry to Switzerland for tourism purposes is still closed. A trip to Switzerland is allowed only in cases of special need and for this you need to obtain permission (pass) from the Embassy of Switzerland, even if the traveler has a valid Schengen visa.

    BALTIC COUNTRIES IN ONE TREND

Latvia has simplified entry into the country since April 1 against the backdrop of an improvement in the epidemiological situation. The requirement to present a certificate of vaccination, past illness or covid test has been abolished. However, this requirement will remain mandatory for passengers arriving from countries in the red risk zone. In this list and RF.

Latvia accepts Russians for tourism purposes from March 1, 2022. For entry, you will need either a certificate of vaccination with an EMA-approved vaccine or a negative test result for coronavirus. This can be either a PCR test done no earlier than 72 hours before departure, or an antigen test no older than 48 hours before departure.

Latvia did not close the borders for Russian tourists. But the issuance of visas for our compatriots has been suspended. More information about this can be found on the website of the Latvian Consulate in Moscow.

In Lithuania , from April 4, the requirement to wear medical masks was canceled. The mask mode remains only in healthcare facilities, public transport and guardianship institutions.

From March 31, 2022, Lithuania has opened for Russian tourists. Entry is possible upon presentation of a negative PCR test (made no more than 72 hours before arrival in Lithuania) or a certificate of vaccination with a vaccine recognized in Lithuania.

The Lithuanian authorities did not report about the closure of borders for tourists from Russia. However, since February 24, Lithuania has not issued visas to citizens of the Russian Federation.

Estonia from 1 April allows third-country nationals to enter with a PCR test no older than 48 hours or a rapid antigen test no older than 24 hours. Children under 12 do not need a test certificate.

Russians vaccinated with Sputnik V can also enter Estonia, including for tourism purposes. However, traveling from Russia to Estonia by road on the land border is possible only for compelling reasons, which do not include tourism.

From March 10, 2022, Estonia has suspended the issuance of short-stay visas for Russian citizens for trips with non-essential purposes, including tourism.

PAKISTAN DISSOLVED “OPERATING HQ”, USA ALLOWED CRUISES

In Pakistan removed most of the anti-covid measures. Until the end of April, the rest will be canceled, including the wearing of masks. The country has disbanded the national operations center that oversaw the fight against covid.

From February 24, 2022, vaccinated passengers (Sputnik V is recognized in Pakistan) are exempt from the requirement to present a PCR test before departure to Pakistan.

Unvaccinated travelers will require a PCR test no older than 72 hours prior to departure. Children under 12 do not need tests. Before flying to Pakistan, you must register in the PassTrack app. A visa is required to enter Pakistan, which can be applied for online.

At US , the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) removed the high-risk COVID-19 cruise travel notice, which effectively banned ocean cruises.

The move gives major US cruise operators such as Carnival Corp, Royal Caribbean Group and Norwegian Cruise Line a reason to restart cruise programs.

Details of the entry of Russian citizens into the United States can be found in this article.

IN ITALY FROM APRIL GRADUALLY REMOVE COVID RESTRICTIONS

Separately, we will talk about good news from Italy . Two years later, on March 31, Italy officially ended the state of emergency, which was introduced on January 31, 2020 at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

From April 1, Italy begins the phased lifting of restrictions related to the coronavirus. So, from April, the Green Pass will not be required to consume food or drinks in open areas in bars and restaurants.

At the same time, a basic Green Pass (tourists can get it on the basis of an EMA-approved vaccination certificate or a PCR test no older than 48 hours) is required for indoor catering until April 30.

From April 1, the Green Pass will no longer be required to enter museums, galleries, archaeological sites, post offices, banks and government offices.

All restrictions on the capacity of facilities such as sports stadiums, concerts and open-air nightclubs are cancelled. A basic Green Pass is required to visit them.

The Green Pass requirement on local and regional public transport (including metro and buses) will end on April 1st, however it will remain mandatory on intercity transport until April 30th.

FFP2 masks must be worn on all forms of public transport until 30 April. Also, the mask mode will remain in closed public places, such as museums, theaters, restaurants and gyms.

The Super Green Pass (an analogue of the Russian certificate of a person who has been vaccinated or recovered from coronavirus with a QR code from the State Services) will remain valid until April 30 for entering health centers, gaming halls, discos, cinemas, theaters and indoor concerts. You will also need it to attend indoor conventions and sporting events, as well as indoor parties for civil or religious ceremonies, including baptisms, communions, and weddings.

In fact, the Green Pass system is valid in Italy until May 1, 2022. The Super Green Pass will be valid until December 31st for those visiting hospitals and nursing homes.

For Russians to enter Italy, a certificate of a rapid antigen test (valid for 48 hours) or a molecular PCR test (valid for 72 hours) with a negative result will be enough.

You can read more about the sanitary protocols for entering Italy in this article. Italy issues tourist visas in Moscow and regions.

Both GOP candidates courting veterans in Nevada Senate race

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Common sense more than any campaign strategy dictated that Adam Laxalt not trumpet his own military service in Nevada’s sometimes-heated Republican Senate primary.

After all, the ex-attorney general, who served as a Navy judge advocate general in Iraq, was running against retired Army Capt. Sam Brown, a war hero who was nearly killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan and whose badly scarred face serves as a more powerful reminder of his sacrifice than his Purple Heart.

But with his former foe now turned patriotic ally, Laxalt, the son of a U.S. senator and grandson of another, is trying to make the most of his own military career.

He is relying on familiar GOP buzzwords in appealing to veterans to help save the country from “the left” and calling Democrats the party of the “megarich” as he tries to unseat Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto.

In some cases he is also capitalizing further on his military experience — and Cortez Masto’s lack of it — with links to conservative issues from U.S. border safety to government overreach on things like COVID-19.

He warns about the dangers of Afghan terrorists, prematurely released from captivity, sneaking into the U.S. and pledges to reinstate military members who were discharged for refusing to get coronavirus vaccinations.

They’re the kind of campaign issues that strike a chord with many rallying around candidates like Laxalt, backed by former President Trump in a Western battleground that Republicans view as one of their best chances to turn a blue Senate seat red.

“First and foremost, there is no substitute for service. And we all know that,” Laxalt said recently at the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Reno, where he and Brown served up free hot dogs. “Obviously, Sen. Masto hasn’t served.”

It’s a line he couldn’t use in debates with Brown, who denounced Laxalt during the primary as part of the “elite” Washington establishment.

Laxalt — the grandson of former U.S. Sen. and Nevada Gov. Paul Laxalt, and son of former Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M. — spent much of his early life in the D.C. area.

He graduated from Georgetown law school, was an assistant law professor at the U.S. Naval Academy and served with the JAG Corps in Iraq but didn’t engage in the sort of field combat Brown saw with the 1st Infantry in 2008.

At the VFW, Laxalt was introduced by an ex-commander of a B-2 test squad who created a potentially awkward moment when referencing Laxalt’s role in the military before the room eventually erupted into laughter.

“I’ll forgive him for being a JAG,” Air Force Col. Tony Grady said. “But then, not really, because when I was a commander, the JAG was in my hip pocket, to keep me out of trouble.”

Brown never claimed his military record outranked Laxalt’s, but he did make veiled references during the primary to the way each got where they are.

“I wasn’t born into power,” Brown said in his first ad, describing the Taliban bomb that “nearly killed me,” the soldiers who dragged his burning body to safety under mortar fire and his subsequent 30 surgeries.

Each pitch ended with the same tag line: “Career politicians can’t fix Washington; they broke it.”

Initially, the quote was juxtaposed with images of Cortez Masto and President Joe Biden but later was accompanied by photos of Cortez Masto and Laxalt.

Now, Brown is singing Laxalt’s praises and pleading with vets of all political stripes to rally behind him.

“What we do in primaries as Republicans is identify who can lay down the most effective fire, and they become the main effort,” Brown said. “Our duty is to go out there and be those foot soldiers for Adam Laxalt.”

At the VFW, Laxalt linked Cortez Masto to Democratic policies he says have weakened the U.S. military, disrespected its soldiers and made young Americans less likely to enlist. His biggest applause came when he ridiculed those who “wonder why” military recruiting is down.

“Well, how about because they kicked out service members for refusing to take the COVID shots?” Laxalt said. “We have Navy SEALS after 12-year investments and 15 tours of duty to terrible places. I’m a guaranteed vote to reinstate those people.”

Laxalt said he’d heard Cortez Masto hadn’t held a town hall meeting with veterans for at least a year.

    Not true, her campaign said.

Cortez Masto, whose father and grandfather served in the U.S. Army, hosted at least a dozen events with Nevada veterans in the past year “to make sure she’s hearing their concerns and is able to deliver the federal support they need,” her campaign said in an email.

Her accomplishments include approval of the construction of a national veterans cemetery in Elko that locals had sought for nearly a decade.

She helped pass a bill guaranteeing health and compensation benefits for veterans exposed to Agent Orange. Her legislation to protect VA benefits for student veterans was signed into law, as was a measure she backed to improve veterans’ access to mental health services.

As he did during the primary, Laxalt reminds vets he founded the nation’s first state office of military legal services as Nevada’s attorney general — a creation the Pentagon eventually embraced and several states later adopted.

He touts his JAG work in Iraq — where his legal team oversaw more than 20,000 detainees — when blasting the Biden administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, “leaving billions of dollars of weapons behind” for potential terrorists.

He said the “Afghan debacle” marked the first time Americans “took the measure of this commander in chief and knew he was not up to the job.”

“Sen. Masto is not holding him accountable,” Laxalt said. “A terrorist that was released in Afghanistan could actually be in this country today. This is a huge issue, and it’s an absolute shame that Sen. Masto is dead silent on this.”

Cortez Masto insists she has pushed back on Biden’s method of withdrawal from Afghanistan after criticizing Trump’s proposal to withdraw without a plan in place.

She gets high marks from Ross Bryant, a retired Army veteran who is the executive director of UNLV’s Military & Veteran Services Center in Las Vegas.

Bryant describes himself as a moderate Republican who has voted for candidates in both parties. He’s glad when veterans are elected to Congress and acknowledges the veteran community “is sometimes very harsh: ‘If you are not a vet, you don’t know what it’s like.’”

He said that Laxalt “did great for us” as attorney general, and that Brown’s backing should carry weight with some: “He’s been wounded, he’s one of us. ‘”

But, he said, it’s wrong to portray Cortez Masto as anything but a staunch, effective advocate for veterans. He ticks off a list that includes expanding Agent Orange coverage to toxic burn-pit exposures, pressuring federal agencies to set up booths at UNLV’s veteran job fairs, and reversing benefit formulas during the COVID pandemic that would have drastically reduced $9 million worth of vet benefits for remote-students at UNLV alone.

“At the end of the day, she has delivered. She’s been a rock star for us,” Bryant said.

    Reminder

Weather in Spain, when should you fly?

Spain is a fairly large country that occupies both a significant piece of the mainland and remote islands in the Mediterranean Sea and even in the ocean. Naturally, the weather will be different everywhere and the season will be shorter or longer, respectively, depending on the resort. You, as a tourist and a traveler, are probably interested in just the most touristic places, so let’s look at the three main and most different places in Spain in terms of weather.

The continental part, the Costa Brava and Costa Dorada are the most popular holiday destinations for Belarusians, but they have the shortest season, which starts in June and ends at the end of September. At the same time, at the beginning of the season, the weather quickly comes into tone and pleases tourists with the warm rays of the sun and the equally warm Mediterranean Sea, and you can see favorable weather in Spain in June with maximum probability. At the end of the season, everything happens according to the same scenario, only in the other direction. As early as the 20th of September, it can be 28 degrees Celsius and a calm sea, and already on the 25th, active rains can begin and the sea is rough, so ideally plan your vacation between June and August, and when choosing a vacation a couple of weeks later, carefully keep an eye on the weather in Spain in September, because every year is different and it is quite difficult to predict in advance. But often a little rain is not a hindrance, because it is compensated by freer beaches, a guaranteed warm sea and the absence of long queues in Port Aventura Park, as well as lower prices for tours and entertainment at the resort.

If we look at the weather in Spain by months on the coasts on both sides of Barcelona, then the following picture awaits you:

    • June is quite warm, but without frills. During the day, street signs show an average figure of about 27-28 degrees, and in the evening 19-20. The sea at this time is about 22 degrees and gradually warms up even more.
    • July is already a more generous month for temperatures, the temperature is already approaching 30 degrees, and the nights are already very comfortable with an average temperature of about 22-23 degrees. This month the weather in Spain will be the most comfortable and optimal for most people.
    • August is the hottest month and often shows temperatures above 30 degrees. But do not worry, the sea can always cool you down, because its temperature rarely exceeds 26 degrees this month. Thus, the weather in Spain in August will appeal to hot lovers.
    • September is good because the air cools down to a more comfortable 26-27 degrees, and the sea is still not losing ground and shows a stable 24-25 degrees.

The island part, namely Palma de Mallorca, boasts warmer spring and autumn months, which stretches the high season as much as 5 months, from May to October. The weather in Spain in May is already quite comfortable, but the peak months, such as July and August, are much hotter than in the continental part and easily show 32-33 degrees. The sea starts from May at 19degrees and is gradually growing, breaking the bar of 22 degrees in June, 25 degrees in July, and 27 degrees in August. In September, everything starts to go in the same sequence, but vice versa and makes the weather in Spain this month very comfortable for relaxing, but at other times your holiday will also be wonderful, the main thing is to smear sunscreen and do not forget about hats.

The island of eternal spring – Tenerife, lives its own life in relation to the rest of Spain. Tourists rest here almost all year round and are quite satisfied with the weather even in winter, but the warmer weather in Spain in these places and the swimming season come in April and all this splendor lasts until November. But on this wonderful island, the weather with regards to air and sea temperatures live a different life, so closer to winter, the sea may turn out to be warmer than the air. The average air temperature in April is about 20 degrees and begins to grow every ten days, by about 1-2 degrees and reaches 21 degrees in May, 23-24 degrees in June, 25-26 in July, 26-27 in August and finally in September it again drops to 25 and then gradually decreases. The ocean keeps the degree at 19-22 degrees all year round and reaches its peak in October, around 22-23 degrees. No wonder Tenerife is called the island of spring, because it really is the place to be.

You can see the weather in Spain by months in more detail in the table:

The beach is more than three kilometers, stretched in one line, along which almost all the main entertainment facilities of Ibiza are concentrated, and these are nightclubs and restaurants. The beach is well equipped, there are water equipment rentals. Despite the noise that spreads throughout the area from night discos near the coast, the beach can be recommended for families, as the entrance to the sea is gentle, which will appeal to the kids. Buses run to Playa d’en Bossa and from other nearby resorts, for example, from Es Cavayet and Las Salinas, there are no direct bus services to Sant Antoni and Santo Eularia, you need to go to Ibiza town and take the bus there.

Noteworthy is the Disco-bass night bus, which transports young people free of charge to nightclubs in the area.

    Beaches of Playa d’en Bossa

The beach is more than three kilometers, stretched in one line, along which almost all the main entertainment facilities of Ibiza are concentrated, and these are nightclubs and restaurants. The beach is well equipped, there are water equipment rentals. Despite the noise that spreads throughout the area from night discos near the coast, the beach can be recommended for families, as the entrance to the sea is gentle, which will appeal to the kids. At the end of the beach there is an observation tower, a popular attraction among tourists, do not forget to take your camera with you.

The further you go along the beach from the city of Ibiza, the calmer it becomes, so you can walk to the nudist beach Playa d’Es Cavallett, which is also popular with windsurfers. Even further is Platja de Migjorn beach with a luxurious promenade.

The show usually starts at nine in the evening, you can find out about the performing stars from the big boards hung in the area. However, this is the second place in Playa d’en Bossa in our rating of entertainment.

A popular bar on the beach of the same name, the advantage is an open area with free entry and quiet music that does not hit the head like in previous real dance clubs.

    Tantra Beach Cafe Ibiza

Another dance club on the beach called Tantra Cafe. Small pleasures include a DJ in the evenings, and cheap drinks like two cocktails for €9 or a beer for under €4.

The water park actually turns out to be a little smaller than expected at the beginning, some visitors rate it as a dirty place, others, on the contrary, praise it for its cleanliness, however, the salt water in the pool seems to be some kind of draw for such an entrance ticket. On the territory you can eat, the prices are moderate for this resort.

Generally April is the month of Easter holidays. Thus in some European cities it can be a busy period. But temperatures start to rise all over Europe and it is a great month to visit one of the capitals of the European countries.

April is a good month to visit the temperate climatic areas of the northern hemisphere. In this part of the planet spring has just begun and the climate becomes increasingly mild. The countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea are an excellent destination at this time of the year, even if rainfall may occur. The mild climate allows the visit of the art cities of the countries that overlook the Mediterranean Sea.

In Asia the Japanese spring displays a spectacular blooming of cherry trees that has its best moment in the first two weeks of April.

April is also excellent for visiting the countries of the Persian Gulf and the Middle East such as Jordan, Iran, Oman and Turkey. In these regions the climate is still mild and there are no high temperatures that characterize the summer months. At the end of this month the dry season ends on the Maldives. On the west coast of India the climate is still dry, but temperatures are high.

In Baja California (Mexico) April is the last month for spotting the whales in the Sea of Cortez. Even the Mexican coast along the Pacific Ocean has a good dry climate during this period.

In the southern hemisphere instead it is autumn and this season allows watching the spectacular autumn colours of the trees of the forests. In this month more and more passionate photographers fly to South America to admire the autumn colours in the National Parks of Chilean and Argentine Patagonia. If you are in Chile why not take the opportunity to see one of the most fascinating and isolated places in the world: Easter Island. The name of this island originates in the spotting by a Dutch explorer as the first European on Easter Sunday 1722.

Between the end of March and the beginning of April the forests of New Zealand are transformed into a multitude of colours. The most beautiful places to see the autumn colours are the regions of Central Otago on the South Island and Hawke’s Bay on the North Island, but throughout the country the botanical gardens take on spectacular colours. The Perth region of Western Australia enjoys a mild and dry climate during April.

In Brussels, the capital city of Belgium, and seat of important European institutions, the climate is sub-oceanic, humid and rainy, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, so it has cold (but not freezing) winters and mild or pleasantly warm summers.

The wind blows frequently, and can be intense, especially from November to March.

The average temperature ranges from 3.7 °C (38.7 °F) in January to 18.5 °C (65.3 °F) in July. Here are the average temperatures.

Precipitation is relatively abundant, about 825 millimeters (32.5 inches) per year, but above all, it is common and well distributed over the seasons. However, the rainiest seasons are summer and autumn, and the least rainy season is spring. Rainfall often occurs as short shower or drizzle. Here is the average precipitation.

Winter, from December to February, is cold: daytime temperatures are on average a few degrees above freezing (0 °C or 32 °F), while at night, they are around freezing; wind and humidity often exacerbate the feeling of cold.

However, different weather situations can occur.

When the westerlies blow, temperatures can be quite mild, and can reach 10/12 °C (50/54 °F), however, there may be wind and rain.

On the other hand, when the city is reached by cold air masses from Russia, the temperature drops below freezing, for longer or shorter periods, even during the day. The temperature rarely drops below -10 °C (14 °F), however, it can do it on colder periods. The coldest record is -18.7 °C (-1.7 °F) and was set in January 1940.

Snowfalls in Brussels are quite frequent, though usually not abundant, and occur in the form of light snow, however, snow can sometimes accumulate on the ground, and last for many days, if it occurs during cold waves.

Spring, from March to May, is initially cold, with possible snowfalls still in March, and then it gradually becomes milder in April and May, although some cold days, with highs around 10 °C (50 °F), can occur even in May, especially in the first half of the month. However, April and May are, albeit slightly, the least rainy and cloudy months of the year.

Typically, by the second half of May, temperatures become permanently acceptable, and there can be the first pleasantly warm days, with highs around 25 °C (77 °F) or even above.

Summer, from June to August, is mild or pleasantly warm. The flow of Atlantic fronts does not cease even in this season; the wind blows constantly from the sea, and rainfall is quite frequent as well. However, there are pleasant periods, with daytime temperatures between 20 °C and 25 °C (68 °F and 77 °F), but also cooler periods, with temperatures remaining below 20 °C (68 °F) even during the day. At night, it can be a bit cold, in fact, the temperature can drop below 10 °C (50 °F) even in July and August.

From time to time, there may be hot periods of short duration, in which the temperature can reach or exceed 30 °C (86 °F), which are becoming more frequent due to global warming. The highest record is 40 °C (104 °F), set during the short but exceptional heatwave of July 2019.

Autumn, from September to November, is initially pleasant, ie in the first half of September, then it gradually becomes more cold, dull, wet and windy. The first night frosts usually occur in November, but sometimes also in October.

Brussels does not get a lot of sun, especially from November to February, when the sun rarely shines. It goes a bit better in spring and in summer, when the weather is variable, and between one disturbance and another, the sun can come out. On average, there are around 1,600 hours of sunshine per year. Here are the average sunshine hours per day.

    Brussels – Sunshine hours

    January 2 60 February 2.5 75 March 4 120 April 5. 5 170 May 6.5 200 June 6.5 190 July 6.5 205 August 6.5 195 September 5 145 October 4 120 November 2 65 December 1.5 45 Year 4.3 1585

    Best Time

The best time to visit Brussels runs from mid-May to mid-September, since it is the mildest of the year. July and August are the warmest months. However, it’s better to bring a sweatshirt or sweater, a light jacket and an umbrella, for cool and rainy days.

MAIN WEATHER AND CLIMATIC FEATURES IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE OF THE EARTH IN APRIL 2022

    Air temperature

From the first days of April, the southern regions of the ETR were captured by extreme heat. The thermometers rose above 25-30°, new daily temperature maxima were set. The norms of air temperature for the first decade were exceeded here by 3-5°. And only in the northern and partly central region of the ETR did the average ten-day temperature approximately correspond to the norm. But in the second decade, anomalous heat also came to the Russian North, where new air temperature maxima were recorded in the Arctic. Finally, in the third decade, the situation changed dramatically. The heat remained only in the south. At this time, in the Volgograd, Astrakhan regions, Krasnodar Territory and in the North Caucasus, temperature maxima exceeding +30° were again recorded. And a noticeable cooling came to the northern and central regions of the ETR. In the Moscow, Oryol, Belgorod, Kursk, Tambov, Lipetsk regions, as well as in the Volga region, the thermometers dropped to -3 … -5 ° and lower at night. In the third decade, the average temperature here turned out to be near the norm or even 1-2° below it. nine0008

In the Urals, as well as in the ETR, the first two decades were warm. In the second decade, new temperature maxima were recorded in the Southern Urals, as well as in neighboring Bashkiria. The air temperature rose above + 25 °, and also in the third decade cold came here. In Bashkiria, Chelyabinsk, Kurgan, Sverdlovsk regions. the temperature dropped below -5°.

Most of Siberia was anomalously warm for almost the entire month. In the south of Western Siberia and the Krasnoyarsk Territory, in Khakassia, Tomsk, Kemerovo, Irkutsk regions. the air warmed up to +25°C in some places. New temperature maxima were set. In the Far Eastern Federal District, there was a contrast in temperature anomalies between the northern and southern regions. In the Magadan region and Chukotka Aut. env. almost the entire month it was warmer than usual (anomalies of average ten-day temperatures reached +4-6°C or more), and in the south, in Primorsky and Khabarovsk Territories, the temperature was approximately normal or below the norm every decade. nine0008

As a result, the average temperature in April in Russia exceeded the norm. In the south of the ETR, in the Urals, in Siberia and in the north of the Far East by more than 2°, and in a significant part of this territory by 4° or more. Approximately the average monthly temperature corresponded to the norm in the North-Western, in the north of the Central and in the south of the Far East federal districts.

In general, throughout Russia, separately for its European and Asian parts and in all federal districts, the average air temperature for April is located outside the top ten highest values in a ranked series from 1891g

Throughout East Asia (China, Mongolia, Korea, Japan) the average temperature in April is above the norm. In the north and east of China, it is exceeded by 2-4°. Approximately the same anomaly in Korea, and in Mongolia and Japan it is somewhat less – +1…3°. And only in the south of the Celestial Empire did the temperature approximately correspond to the norm, and in the southwest in Yunnan province, the norm was observed against a negative background. At the end of the month, cold weather came to northern China. During the day in the Beijing area, the air temperature dropped by 13 °. At a number of points, new daily temperature minima were established. But at the same time, in the southeast in the province of Guangdong, the air warmed up to + 33 °. New daily temperature maxima have been registered. In China, April was the 5th warmest on record since 1891g

Weak negative anomalies of mean monthly temperature were observed in Southeast Asia.

The summer heat came early to northern India and neighboring Pakistan. The thermometers rose above +43-45°. Anomalies of average monthly temperature were +3…5° and more. Such heat in April has never been observed here before. In the center of India, the temperature was approximately in line with the norm, and in the extreme south even weak negative anomalies of the average monthly temperature were observed. Last April was the 2nd hottest in the history of regular meteorological observations in India. Even more, the average monthly temperature in April was only once. In 2010 nine0008

It was hot in the Near and Middle East Average monthly temperatures exceeded the norm by 2-4° and more. A sharp temperature contrast was observed in Transcaucasia. At the beginning of the month, hot air came here from the Iranian highlands, and daily temperature maxima were beaten in Azerbaijan. In places they exceeded +30°. But in mid-April, cold air hit the Transcaucasian republics, and now records of cold were recorded in Armenia.

Heat prevailed in Central Asia. At the beginning of the month, a scattering of maximum temperature records fell on Central Asia. In Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, the air temperature repeatedly exceeded +30…33°. The norms of the average monthly temperature throughout Central Asia are exceeded by 2-4°C or more. nine0008

In North Africa, average April temperatures are above normal almost everywhere. From the Atlantic coast to the Red Sea – by 2-4 ° and more. Only in some places the average monthly air temperatures corresponded to the norm, or, for example, in the northern regions of Algeria and Morocco were somewhat lower than them. The average temperature of the past April in North Africa ranks 4-5 in the data series since 1891.

April began in Europe with cold weather. In Germany, France and the Netherlands, new daily air temperature minimums were set. Temperatures below -6°C were recorded in Germany, and 2°C in France and the Netherlands. It hasn’t been this cold in London in April for over 70 years. The cold penetrated even to the south of the continent. In Spain and Italy, such cold weather has not been seen in April for more than 55 years. Cold night records were set in Greece, North Macedonia, Romania, Italy, Poland. In some places the air temperature dropped to -3…-4°. Abnormally warm weather with new daily temperature maxima was recorded only in the north of the Scandinavian countries. As a result, the average air temperature throughout Europe turned out to be close to normal. In the western part of the continent, this happened mainly against a positive, and in the eastern part, a negative background of anomalies. nine0008

Most of Canada and the US experienced cold weather in April. Anomalies of the average temperature of the month amounted to -2…-4°. In Canada, only along the Atlantic coast and in the polar region, and in the USA in Alaska and in the southern states, the average temperature of the month turned out to be above the norm. The weather was very hot in Mexico. Here the anomalies are +2…4° and more.

In the Arctic, the average monthly air temperature is more than 2° above the norm. The largest anomalies (more than 2-4°) formed in the north of Asia and North America. In the north of Europe – the norm, and in the north-east of Greenland it is less than the norm. nine0008

Average air temperature of the Northern Hemisphere in April with an accuracy of 0.1°С. located on the 4th-7th line among the highest values since 1891.

In Moscow, the average temperature in April is +5.8°, which is exactly the norm.

    Ocean surface temperature

La Niña, a cold episode of the Southern Oscillation, has persisted in the Pacific for the ninth consecutive month. Negative SST anomalies in the Northern Hemisphere are located from the equator to 10°N. and from 160°E to the coast of South and Central America, and in the South – along the coast of South America and in the central part of the ocean to 10-15 °S. Those. the area occupied by negative anomalies has not yet decreased in comparison with previous months. nine0008

Large positive SST anomalies (more than +1…2°) are located in the subtropical latitudes of the Pacific Ocean in the Northern Hemisphere. Negative anomalies are taking place in the South China Sea, along the coasts of the United States, Canada and Alaska, as well as in the Bering Strait. The average anomaly of the surface temperature of the Pacific Ocean in the Northern Hemisphere is 0.1° less than the record value of April 1989, despite the presence of a major La Niña.

Although most of the surface of the Atlantic Ocean in the Northern Hemisphere is occupied by above zero temperature anomalies, only those located east of the US coast, and even in the Baltic and North Seas, can be considered large (more than 1 °) of them. The rest of the Atlantic Ocean in the Northern Hemisphere has temperatures close to normal. Weak positive anomalies over most of the ocean surface and weak negative anomalies along the coast of Canada and west of the coast of North Africa in the tropical zone, as well as in the central part of the Mediterranean Sea and along the contact with the waters of the Arctic Ocean. nine0008

    Precipitation

A lot of precipitation fell on EPR in April. Only in a few subjects of the federation, their amounts for the month did not reach the norm. All of them are located either in the north (Leningrad and Kaliningrad regions, the republics of Karelia and Komi), or in the south (Astrakhan region, the republics of Kalmykia, Adygea, Dagestan, North Ossetia, as well as the Chechen, Ingush and Karachay-Cherkess republics). The rest of the territory received much more than normal precipitation. In the Central f.o. 2-3 times or more, in Privolzhsky – 1.5-2.0 times or more, in Yuzhny – more than 1. 5 times the norm in the Republic of Crimea. nine0008

At the beginning of the month, the eastern regions of the Volga region experienced record precipitation. In Kirov and Izhevsk, new daily maximums in the amount of precipitation were set. During the day they accumulated up to half of the monthly norm. In mid-April, rains and snowfalls swept through the central region. In the Moscow, Vladimir, Voronezh, Tula, Kaluga, Bryansk regions. in two days, up to 20-30 mm of precipitation fell in the form of rain, sleet and snow. Heavy rains and snowfalls at the same time were in the Volga region from Tatarstan to the Lower Volga. Up to 25 mm of precipitation fell in some places during the day. A new daily maximum has been set in Kazan. At the beginning of the third decade, again record precipitation was recorded in the Kursk, Smolensk, Bryansk, and Kaluga regions. During the day, up to 20 mm of heavenly moisture accumulated. The rivers were filled to the brim with rainwater. nine0008

In the Urals, monthly precipitation amounted to about the norm. In Siberia, as they say, where it is empty, where it is dense. In the Tomsk region, Altai and Taimyr, in Evenkia, they amounted to the norm and more, and in the rest of the territory it was less. Record rains passed in the south of the Krasnoyarsk Territory.

In the Far East, only Transbaikalia and the Amur Region, as well as Chukotka, received precipitation below the norm, while the rest of the territory was normal or more. Kamchatka and some areas of the Khabarovsk Territory – 1.5 norms. nine0008

In China’s northeastern province of Heilongjiang, atmospheric moisture in April received about the norm and more. But to the south, in eastern China and Mongolia, the amount of precipitation for the month amounted to only half the monthly norm or less. A similar situation is also in the west and south of the Celestial Empire. At the end of the month, heavy rains hit the central and southwestern regions of China, which led to floods. In Sichuan province, the height of the flood waters reached two meters, as a result of which many agricultural lands were flooded. Here the precipitation norms are exceeded by 2-3 times. At the end of the month, snow fell in and around Beijing. In Japan, about the norm of precipitation, and in Korea, less than it. nine0008

The countries of South-East Asia got a lot of rain. In places, the norms are exceeded by 3-4 times. Heavy rain hit Vietnam, which is unusual for this time of year. In Da Nang, 350mm of rain fell in a day. This is more than seven monthly norms. The height of the water flows on the highways reached half a meter, which completely stopped car traffic.

Almost no rain in India and Pakistan. Only along the western coast of India was a separate heavy rain. It was so strong that in the state of Goa a new maximum amount of precipitation for April was established. nine0008

There was no rain at all in the Near and Middle East and very little in Central Asia.

North Africa has had almost no rain this month. Only in the south along the Gulf of Guinea did monthly precipitation amount to the norm or more, and the same can be said about the coastal regions of Algeria and Morocco.

In Europe, a lot of rain fell on countries located in the east of the continent from the Baltic to the Balkans. Here, in some places, the norms are exceeded by 1.5 times or more. The picture is similar in the west in Spain. Here, the anomalies of monthly norms are even greater – 200-250%. Approximately the norm of precipitation in Germany, and in the rest of the continent they turned out to be little and very little. Less than 50% of the norm in northern Italy, partly in France, in the UK and the Scandinavian countries. Record rains came to Belarus. In a number of points, new daily maxima of precipitation amounts have been established. In France, snowfalls were still observed on the slopes of the Alps. nine0008

The eastern and central states of the United States received normal atmospheric moisture and more. Especially a lot of them went to the states bordering Canada (North and South Dakotas, Montana and Minnesota). Here, the norms are exceeded by 2-3 times or more. The west of the country from California to Kansas and Oklahoma has received almost no rain this month. Due to dry and hot weather in Arizona and New Mexico, numerous fires have started. In Canada, most of the territory was dry. Precipitation was recorded only in the polar region and in areas bordering the United States from Saskatchewan to Quebec. A lot of rain fell on Mexico, a number of Caribbean countries and northern Colombia. nine0008

72mm of precipitation fell in Moscow during the month. This is 177% of the norm. The past April was the 5th “wettest” in the meteorological chronicle of the capital since 1891.

According to researchers, in April the average air temperature significantly exceeded the norm in parts of Europe, Antarctica and Greenland. According to the map published on the website of the program, abnormal figures for April were also recorded in Siberia. In North America, the month turned out to be, on the contrary, unusually cold. nine0008

The average temperature in April 2020 is 0.7°C above the average since 1981. The hottest April, according to researchers, was in 2016, but the past month was only 0.01 °C colder.

Researchers from the USA came to similar conclusions. According to American scientists, due to the high temperature in April 2020, with a high probability (99.94%), it will enter the top five hottest in history. “With 70 percent certainty, we can say that 2020 will be the hottest year on record,” meteorologists are sure. nine0008

Whether changes in average temperature are related to changes in greenhouse gas emissions, scientists do not report. In February 2020, due to restrictive measures related to the coronavirus pandemic, CO2 emissions in China decreased by 25%.

Government energy-saving advice ‘not nannying’, says Gove

A public information campaign to encourage people to save energy will not be “nannying or patronising”, a senior minister said.

The scheme could show households how to knock up to £420 off their bills, while at the same time delivering potentially huge savings for taxpayers by reducing the cost of the energy price guarantee.

Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove said the Government would be pointing people towards “authoritative sources of advice” on managing energy usage.

Michael Gove said people would be pointed towards expert advice on cutting energy bills (Stefan Rousseau/PA)

The Times reported that ministers are preparing a £25 million public information campaign including advice such as switching off radiators in empty rooms and taking showers instead of baths.

Officials have identified eight changes to save up to £420 a year including reducing the flow temperature from boilers, switching electrical devices off rather than leaving them on standby and changing from baths to showers.

As well as easing the pressure on hard-pressed household finances, cutting energy consumption will also benefit the state.

The price the Government will pay to shield households from enormous energy bills will increase sharply in the New Year after Ofgem raised the price cap.

Without the Government’s support, bills for the average household would be 67p per unit of electricity instead of 34p, and 17p per unit of gas instead of 10.3p.

The average household bill would have reached around £4,279 per year, instead of the £2,500 that they will now pay due to the Government support – a figure which will rise to £3,000 in April.

Energy consultancy Auxilione estimates the higher Ofgem cap will push up the cost of running the Government’s energy price guarantee from £7.8 billion in the last three months of 2022 to £15.1 billion in the first three months of next year.

    — British Gas (@BritishGas) November 9, 2022

It means that the Government will pay around 33p every time households use their oven for half an hour or an electric shower for six minutes – according to estimates from energy supplier Ovo.

Mr Gove told BBC Breakfast: “What we will be doing and should be doing is pointing people towards authoritative sources of advice on how to minimise energy usage but it’s important that advice comes from experts and that there’s nothing nannying, or patronising, or directional about it from people like me.”

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt told MPs on Wednesday that “for most people we need you to play your part in reducing our energy dependency” and “we’ve got this national ambition to reduce energy consumption by 15%”.

Reducing energy consumption and improving domestic supplies will leave the country less vulnerable to global price shocks such as the one triggered by Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

A previous attempt to introduce a public information campaign on energy-saving measures was reportedly blocked under Liz Truss’s administration.

Ofgem price cap: UK households to save almost £2000 on energy bills

THE price the Government will pay to shield households from rising energy bills will more than double in the new year after Ofgem today raised the energy price cap.

The energy price cap is a backstop protection from the government for people who default on their supplier’s basic energy tariff.

However, this rise will not impact the price that household pays for their energy bills due to the Government’s Energy Price Guarantee (EPG).

The EPG came into effect on October 1, 2022. The new scheme was announced to reduce the unit cost of electricity and gas so that a household with typical energy use in Great Britain pays, on average, around £2,500 a year on their energy bill, for the following 6 months.

Today’s price cap rise will come into effect in January 2023 and will force the Treasury to pay 33p per unit of electricity and nearly 7p per unit of gas that homes across Great Britain use.

UK households to save almost £2000 on energy bills as Ofgem price cap raised (Image: PA)

It will also push up the cost of running the Government’s energy price guarantee from £7.8 billion in the last three months of 2022 to £15.1 billion in the first three months of next year, according to estimates by energy consultancy Auxilione.

Without the Government’s support, bills for the average household would be 67p per unit of electricity instead of 34p, and 17p per unit of gas instead of 10.3p.

Energy is charged per unit, so those who use more can spend more.

The average household bill would have reached around £4,279 per year, instead of the £2,500 that they will now pay due to Government support.

    📣 The #PriceCap is changing on 1 January 2023

The Energy Price Guarantee is still in place, and consumers will continue paying the price set by the government until April 2023

The Government support will become less generous from April when average households will start paying £3,000.

That figure is for households that use an average amount of energy. Households that use more will pay more, and those using less will pay less.

“There is no immediate action for consumers to take as a result of today’s announcement,” Ofgem said on Thursday.

In the past, the price cap has regulated how much a household pays for its gas and electricity. However, the cap is set based on what it costs energy suppliers to buy gas and electricity on wholesale markets.

The cap, therefore, has no impact on households but does affect Government finances.

It means the Government will pay around 33p every time someone uses their oven for half an hour or an electric shower for six minutes, according to estimates from energy supplier Ovo.

Rocio Concha, director of policy and advocacy at Which?, said: “The news that the energy price cap will hit £4,279 from January will be hugely worrying for consumers but they should remember that their bills are protected against this price increase by the Government’s energy price guarantee scheme.

He added: “Which? is also concerned that hundreds of thousands of customers on traditional prepayment meters have not yet claimed the government support that is available.

“Energy firms and the Government must work to understand why so many Energy Bill Support Scheme vouchers have not yet been redeemed, and ensure that customers on these prepayment meters – who are more likely to be vulnerable and on lower incomes – are able to access this vital support.”

We base the humidity comfort level on the dew point, as it determines whether perspiration will evaporate from the skin, thereby cooling the body. Lower dew points feel drier and higher dew points feel more humid. Unlike temperature, which typically varies significantly between night and day, dew point tends to change more slowly, so while the temperature may drop at night, a muggy day is typically followed by a muggy night.

The chance that a given day will be muggy in Málaga is essentially constant during April, remaining around 0% throughout.

For reference, on August 17, the muggiest day of the year, there are muggy conditions 47% of the time, while on January 1, the least muggy day of the year, there are muggy conditions 0% of the time.

    Temperature and Dew Point

There are 3 weather stations near enough to contribute to our estimation of the temperature and dew point in Málaga.

For each station, the records are corrected for the elevation difference between that station and Málaga according to the International Standard Atmosphere , and by the relative change present in the MERRA-2 satellite-era reanalysis between the two locations.

The estimated value at Málaga is computed as the weighted average of the individual contributions from each station, with weights proportional to the inverse of the distance between Málaga and a given station.

The stations contributing to this reconstruction are:

    • Málaga Airport (LEMG, 96%, 5 mi, southwest, -23 ft elevation change)
    • Federico García Lorca Airport (LEGR, 2. 7%, 48 mi, northeast, 1,785 ft elevation change)
    • Córdoba Airport (LEBA, 1.6%, 81 mi, north, 223 ft elevation change)

    Other Data

All data relating to the Sun’s position (e.g., sunrise and sunset) are computed using astronomical formulas from the book, Astronomical Algorithms 2nd Edition , by Jean Meeus.

All other weather data, including cloud cover, precipitation, wind speed and direction, and solar flux, come from NASA’s MERRA-2 Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis . This reanalysis combines a variety of wide-area measurements in a state-of-the-art global meteorological model to reconstruct the hourly history of weather throughout the world on a 50-kilometer grid.

Land Use data comes from the Global Land Cover SHARE database , published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Elevation data comes from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) , published by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Names, locations, and time zones of places and some airports come from the GeoNames Geographical Database .

We draw particular cautious attention to our reliance on the MERRA-2 model-based reconstructions for a number of important data series. While having the tremendous advantages of temporal and spatial completeness, these reconstructions: (1) are based on computer models that may have model-based errors, (2) are coarsely sampled on a 50 km grid and are therefore unable to reconstruct the local variations of many microclimates, and (3) have particular difficulty with the weather in some coastal areas, especially small islands.

We further caution that our travel scores are only as good as the data that underpin them, that weather conditions at any given location and time are unpredictable and variable, and that the definition of the scores reflects a particular set of preferences that may not agree with those of any particular reader.
