Best Countries To Visit In September (2023)

Planning A Trip In September? Here’s our list of best countries to visit in September

September forms a major travel-lust month. Why? Because it becomes an ideal month to visit most places in the world. With the Autumn Equinox (in Northern Hemisphere) falling in this month, the seasons change. The transition of summer to autumn in Northern Hemisphere and winter to spring in Southern Hemisphere make September ideal with good weather, lots of tourist opportunities and a great holiday cheer, even by the locals. While the coastal destinations like Greece and Italy become ideal for beach-relaxation, the landlocked ones like Turkey are cool and dry with clear skies; the isles like Scotland and Ireland boast of some great warm weather while countries like Iceland near the North Pole become ready to shower their wonder of the Northern Lights on the world.

And hence is produced this longer than usual list of best countries that are well visited in September. From Portugal to Bali, Croatia to Wales, England to Turkey, your itinerary has too many lucrative options to choose from!

Croatia

Photograph by https://www.valeriitkachenkophoto.com/travel-photography-croatia-rovinj/

Situated on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, Croatia is a part of Eastern Europe and is home to a thousand islands and more. It is a major tourist attraction for the Dynamic Alps, the medieval charm of its capital city Zagreb, lots of museums and the Gothic and Renaissance architecture of its coastal cities. September is a great time to visit Croatia as the temperature is on the warmer side and days are long, with 13 hours of sunshine. Some major festivals fall in this month, including the Zagreb Theatre Festival, Outlook Fest (a homeland music festival) and Varazdin Baroque Evenings.

Things to Do:

You should start your trip by touring the Plitvice Lakes National Park, known for its chain of 16 terraced lakes, waterfalls and limestone canyon. Retreat to Hvar island in the Adriatic Sea, for a relaxed summer weekend, to explore the 13th-century walls, fortresses and Renaissance architecture. You can also go beach-hopping at Dubovica and other inland lavender fields. There is also the island of Vis, just off the Dalmatian Coast, renowned for its beaches, sea caves and Roman ruins. For the history nerd in you, visit Diocletian’s Palace, Catherdral of St. Dominius, Euphrasian Basilica and St. James Cathedral. Don’t forget to go to the Roman Amphitheatre in Pula, dating back to 1st Century.

How to Reach:

Croatia’s major International Airports include those in Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik and Pula. From India, you will not get a direct flight to Croatia but many connecting flights are available by carriers like Lufthansa, Air India, Jet Airways, Air France etc. You can also reach Croatia by rail from European cities like Austria, Germany, Greece, Serbia etc. Or you can drive up yourself. Buses are also available for inter-country travel within Europe.

Portugal

Photograph by https://blamethemonkey.com/hdr-photography-tutorial-blog-lisbon-portugal-urban-color

The country that made ‘Port’ or Porto Wine a famous commodity world over since the 18th Century and has its borders defined since the early 12th Century, Portugal is Europe’s oldest country. It is home to football fanatics and stadiums, as well as Christiano Ronaldo. A visit to this country is bound to be a mix of history, architecture, beaches, churches and of course, FOOTBALL. September marks the end of summer in Portugal and hence ensures amiable climate, with 22°C average day temperature, the lowest being 17°C at nights.

Things to Do:

Venture into Lisbon for some centuries-old trams, the heritage walks down Baixa district, and the opulence of the city centre. In Porto, see the Douro river divide the city, explore the seaside suburbs right out of the renaissance era, and traipse in and out of a burgeoning collection of contemporary cafes, restaurants and bars. Do take a mouthful of Portugal’s national drink – Port. Harry Potter fans, do visit Livraria Lello bookstore, inspired by Hogwarts.

Spend a weekend at Madeira Island, visit the Estádio Municipal de Braga stadium that is carved out of a rock and Fado Bars, playing the traditional Portugal music called ‘fado’ or fate.

How to Reach:

Lisbon, Portela and Humberto Delgado form some of the main International Airports in Portugal. When travelling from India, you can catch a direct flight to Portugal from Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore or Goa. The major airlines operating on this route include Air France, British Airways, Air India and Jet Airways among others. European countries like Spain and France run regular buses to Portugal, namely, ALSA and Auto Res. Ditto for rail networks. Or you can hire a cab.

Greece

Photograph by https://www.pandotrip.com/incredible-dotted-alleys-in-mykonos-greece-12239/

One of the oldest civilisations and home to the tales of Greek Gods, this is a country that is often referred to as the cradle of Western civilisation. With Athens as its capital, Greece still preserves iconic landmarks and monuments, even ruins that date back to 5th Century BC. A visit to Greece is best timed in the month of September as the temperatures are amiable and the sun is golden. The Mediterranean sea is azure and everything seems perfectly pressed to give you the holiday of your dreams. 24°C is the average day temperature in Athens with a drop to 19°C by night.

Things to Do:

You would mostly be landing in Athens, the Greek capital and hence it is best to explore some iconic sights here like the National Archaeological Museum, Parthenon and the Acropolis. You can spend some time on the island of Santorini, soaking in picture perfect vistas with the white-washed houses for backdrop. Or explore the island of Mykonos. You can also take a stroll down Europe’s oldest city, Knossos of Crete. Go to Olympia in Peloponnese for the famous archeological site by the same name, visit Thessaloniki for the best nightlife in Greece. You must also trek up the mountain of Gods, Mt. Olympus in Macedonia, if not for the thrill of hiking then for the sheer rush of being a part of the legendary greek mythology.

How to Reach:

The main airport of Greece is located in Athens and is called the Elefthérios Venizélos International Airport. Air France, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Jet Airways, Gulf Air, Aeroflot etc ply regular flights from India to Athens. Many ferries and cruises also ply to the coast of Greece and its islands, like the ones from the Italian ports of Bari, Trieste and Venice. Or from Cyprus, Israel and Turkey. Buses as well as trains also run from major European counties.

England

Photograph by https://www.brendansadventures.com/guide-travel-photography-london-england/

The country that gave the world Shakespeare and Magna Carta, David Beckham and Benedict Cumberbatch, England is a marvel of rich history, wonderful cities and quiet moors. The month of September becomes a boon in terms of mild sunshine, dry weather and overall trailing of summer warmth. The average temperature is 16°C and the possibility of showers is much lower than usual. There are also some major fun festivals this time of the year, like the Nordic Walks in Yorkshire, Sense and Sensibility Festival dedicated to Jane Austen in the city of Bath (Somerset) and the Tour of Britain in Cotswold.

Things to Do:

Explore London to the fullest with the Big Ben, London Bridge, Thames, Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, Palace of Westminster, Windsor Castle, Madam Tussaud and Stonehenge among other attractions. Take a tour of Statford Upon Avon to see William Shakespeare’s birthplace, tour the museum and maybe sit for a small presentation about this renowned playwright. Other good cities to explore are Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Bristol and the university centres of Oxford and Cambridge.

You can also take a road trip down the hamlets of Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. Yorkshire is another beautiful tranquil getaway if you just want to book a Bed & Breakfast and loll around in bed after hours of evening walks and teas by the stream.

How to Reach:

London being one of the top cities and business hubs of the world, is well equipped with International and Domestic airports; Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted being the most important ones. You can opt for any of the following airlines for a direct flight from India to London – Air India, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Jet Airways. You can also take the ferry from France across the English Channel or the train. While in London, public transport like the underground tube and buses are a cheaper way to travel instead of taking cabs (black cabs are filthy expensive). For short distances you can walk it off if the weather is dry.

Italy

Photograph by https://casarotto.wordpress.com/2011/02/24/italy/

Italy’s farmer’s pie ‘Pizza’ and the humble ‘Pasta’ have been known worldwide in street as well as gourmet cooking. What is surprising about this small European country is its natural beauty that is coupled with a deep love for art and architecture that is steeped in history. September is the best time to explore the country and its many breath-taking cities in bright sunlight, mild temperatures, and enjoy classic handmade pastas and sauces as well as savour the different wines.

Things to Do:

Roam in Rome. A cliche statement, but charming nonetheless; a vacation in Italy must naturally begin with touring its capital. Check out the Colosseum and Trevi fountain in Rome, lunch at one of the many corner cafes, lick gelato while treading the cobbled roads of Rome and visit the Vatican City too. For a rundown in history and renaissance, you must head to Florence, the home of Leonardo Da Vinci. The city is filled with artefacts, sculptures of David, the Duomo and the Uffizi Gallery. Go to Venice, the city of canals, for Gondola rides and Milan to see the latest fashion trends of Italy. Check out the Leaning Tower of Pisa, spend an idyllic day or two at the lyrical ‘Isle of Capri.’ Sicily is another great island to visit, as is the Amalfi coast.

How to Reach:

Rome, Florence, Pisa, Milan and Sicily all boast of International airports. When taking a flight from India, you have options of direct as well as stopover flights from Mumbai, Delhi etc. Air India, Lufthansa, Emirates and British Airways are some of the regular aircraft carriers plying these routes. Venice, Ancona, Bari and Brindisi are major ports where ferries and cruises dock and you can also catch ferries to travel to islands like Sicily or Sardinia. Italo Rail or Euro Rail connect Italy to most other European countries and the roads are also a good bet.

Ireland

Photograph by http://onebigphoto.com/beautiful-city-cork-ireland/

Famous for giving the world W. B. Yeats, Oscar Wilde, Guinness beer, Celtic rituals, elves and oh, omens; Ireland is a land of many mysteries. It is lovingly called the emerald Isle for its dark green meadows and is dotted with many a ruins and castles. During the month of September, Ireland becomes cool and almost sunny. With 9-13°C range, bright seas and cool lands, Ireland becomes ready to be explored. Festivals like Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival in County Clare, Oktoberfest (for beer lovers) in Dublin and Dingle Food Fest in Cork are some enjoyable ones.

Things to Do:

Explore the hustle and bustle of cities like Dublin, Cork, and Galway. When done with all the contemporary life of bars, pubs, restaurants, museums and hotels, head out to the desolate isles and glaciers that fringe Ireland. Visit castles like the Cahir Castle, roll down emerald meadows, catch sight of seals that are said to be good omens of faeries and take a cruise down river Shannon. There are some amazing cliffs to ‘hang out’ at, like the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare. Explore County Kerry, Skelling Islands, Dingle Peninsula, and the Guinness Storehouse to see firsthand how the famous Irish beer is brewed. There is also the Ring of Kerry that must be undertaken on a leisurely drive to witness the historical landmarks and sceneries of Ireland. Finally, the mighty Dublin Castle mustn’t be missed.

How to Reach:

Ireland has 4 international airports – Dublin, Shannon, Cork and Ireland West. When coming in from India, you can take one of the direct flights from Delhi or via Dubai/ Abu Dhabi. Mumbai also plies regular flights with aircraft carriers like Etihad, Jet Airways, Air India, Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines. If travelling by road from England or any other European country you have Bus Eireann, Ulsterbus and Eurolines for bus services. Irish Rail and Northern Ireland Railways connect all of Ireland to train services in the Great Britain. You can also reach Ireland by ferry services from France, Great Britain and Wales.

Scotland

Photograph by https://matadornetwork.com/trips/30-images-scotland-cant-stop-looking/

Scotland is part of the United Kingdom since the bloody battle of Culloden of 1746. Although home to some very chic and contemporary cites like Edinburgh, Inverness and Glasgow, Scotland is still known as the country of highlanders, those handsome viking-like warriors that wore kilts. September here marks the start of autumn and warm, sunny days trail into cool ones, with temperature ranging from 15 to 17°C. The Edinburgh Antiques Collection Fair, Pitlochry Highlands Games and the Largs Viking Festival make this month quite interesting.

Things to Do:

You can explore Cairngorms and Northwest Highlands, Loch Ness and its story of the Loch Ness monster, Loch Lomond and the beautiful Isle of Skye. For a haunting history of those Jacobites that were martyred in the bloody battle of Culloden, spend an afternoon at the Culloden moor. The museum is also a reminder of Scottish bravery and the misery that befell their culture after the Battle of Culloden. For some major castle and city tours, explore the cities of Glasgow, Inverness and drink some great Whiskey that is patent of this region. You must also visit the Holyrood Palace and Edinburgh castle and shop at Princess Street in Edinburgh. The famous Netflix show Outlander, that has been shot in Scotland, is still being filmed; hence don’t miss the specially arranged Outlander Tour of all the locations they shoot at.

How to Reach:

Some major Scottish airports include the Aberdeen International Airport, Glasgow International Airport, Edinburgh Airport, Glasgow Prestwick International Airport, Inverness and Dundee Airport. There are no direct flights from India to Scotland, however, you can take a stopover flight from Mumbai to Edinburgh. Air India and British Airways are two major carriers from Mumbai to Edinburgh. National Express bus service runs regular buses between Scotland and other cites of UK and National Rail System is the integrated Scottish and Great Britain rail system. One of the best ways though is to hire a car and drive up to Scotland from London.

Wales

Photograph by http://www.countryfile.com

Wales is a stunning country in the southwest of Great Britain. It has been known for the flourishing of the Great Industrial Revolution in Britain and the coal and miners’ industry boom in the late 18th and early 19th century. Wales is also a country of hauntingly beautiful rugged coastline, tall mountains, a distinctive Welsh language and Celtic culture. September becomes of the greatest times to visit Wales, not the least for its trailing end of summer. Wales celebrates a string of summer festivals. From the Gladfest to Ironman Wales to the Goodlife Experience, you will be spoilt for choice.

Things to Do:

Attend the said festivals, tour the cities of Wales, hike its country-side and feel like you are living in the novels of Poldark. Cardiff is a refined city on Welsh coast, abound with medieval castles, gothic architecture, modern buildings and a burgeoning nightlife. You can also visit the Snowdonia National Park, suffused with lakes, hiking trails and a railway line that takes you up to the peak that is called Snowdon. The Conwy castle and Cardiff Castle are also worth exploring. Beaumaris Castle is often referred to as Britain’s most technically perfect castle and deserves many accolades. Also must-visit is the Big Pit National Coal Museum. It also houses an actual working coal mine. Pembrokeshire, Anglesey and the walled town of Conwy make for some amazing getaways as well.

How to Reach:

There are no direct flights to Wales from India but one-stop and two-stop flights from Mumbai to Cardiff, with stopovers in the Gulf or a European country. The best way to travel to Wales however is taking a flight out to London and then catching a domestic flight to Cardiff International Airport or taking a bus/ train/ hiring a car for a road trip down to Wales. The gushing waterfalls, expanses of meadows and dots of ruins make for one amazing experience while riding the train.

You can except mild days and cool nights, with dry climate for a great outdoorsy holiday.

The country of Turkey is a beautiful amalgamation of eastern as well as western culture. Why wouldn’t it be? After all, it straddles the two continents of Asia and Europe, becoming a confluence of the two ways of life. With its cultural connections going back centuries to Greece, Rome, Persia, Syria and the Byzantine, Turkey is what once was called the ‘Ottoman Empire.’ Today Turkey makes for one beautiful paradise that nature has blessed with bounty. Things to Do:

Also visit Ankara Castle and Pamukkale town (renowned for its mineral-rich thermal waters on white terraces). Iceland

Photograph by https://iceland-photo-tours.com/northern-lights-pictures/

Iceland, a Nordic island nation, is a brilliant manifestation of the paradox ‘fire and ice.’

With its dramatic landscape sheathed in ice and volcanoes that spew hot Lava every now and then, it is a real wonder. It also boasts of a string of geysers, hot springs and lava fields. Most of the population of Iceland resides in the capital city of Reykjavik, which, surprisingly, completely runs on geothermal power and is home to the National and Saga museums. During September, Iceland is still in thrall of a waning summer and hence the temperatures are quite warm with less crowds. Average temperature is 8°C and a day is general 14 hours long. This becomes the idea time to see the Northern Lights.

Things to Do:

Vatnajökull and Snæfellsjökull national parks form two protected areas for glaciers. After the autumn equinox (20th September), you have better chances of spotting the Northern Lights. You will be lucky if you spot them in the capital city of Reykjavik, although a better and more sure-shot option is to travel to Seltjarnarnes, where there is less city light and no pollution. You can also check out the animals on Puffin Island (Akurey and Lundey), only half a mile away from Reykjavik. They have the most gorgeous, cute, cuddly colonies of Puffins. September in Portugal; a guide to Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve

Where to go in Portugal?Top 10 PortugalPortugal’s best beach1 week suggestionsA weekend in Portugal

September is one of the best months to visit Portugal. The weather is glorious and all tourist activities are open, but it is passed the hectic peak season of July and August.

With the end of school holidays and package tourists, the whole of Portugal takes on a much more relaxed ambience – and it is the best time to visit Portugal if you are travelling as a couple.

In September there will be shorter queues for the major tourist attractions, while the slight reduction in the temperature means it is also a fantastic time to explore the country.

Being straight after the summer season, everything is fully open (the resort towns tend to close down at the end of October), and the weather is still warm enough to spend time on the beaches.

September is actually one of the busiest months in the Algarve, especially for older tourists who are drawn by the relaxed pace of life, after the children have gone back to school.

It is a myth that prices are lower in September, but hotels and flights will not be sold out, so there will be more choice and availability.

This article will provide a guide to September in Portugal, and help you get the most from your holiday.

The beautiful Algarve region will be much less crowded in Septmeber than in the peak summer months

The whole of Portugal is perfect for a holiday during September. Recommended tour routes and holiday ideas for September include:
1) A city break based in Porto, which includes a cruise along the Douro River and day trips to Braga, Guimarães and Aveiro
2) A relaxed beach holiday to Albufeira, Alvor or Vilamoura
3) A touring trip of the Algarve (Tavira, Faro, Lagos and Silves)
4) A city break to Lisbon, with day trips to Sintra, Cascais, Sesimbra and Obidos
5) A tour of the undiscovered northeast of Portugal (Serra da Estrela mountains, Beira region, Monsanto and Lamego)

The interactive map below shows these suggested itineraries.

For the suggested tours 2 and 3 you would fly into Faro airport, for 1 and 5 Porto airport and for route 4 Lisbon airport. A car is needed for route 5 as this is a remote region of Portugal with almost no public transport.

The weather in September could be classes as almost perfect. It will be warm, sunny and dry, but is without the intense heat of the summer. Rain is rare in September but there is always a possibility with a likelihood further to the north.

In the Algarve the weather will be warm enough for spending time on the beach, while evenings are refreshing, and you may need to bring a jacket.

The Algarve in September

September is a great time to visit the Algarve, and is perfect for so many different tourist types.

The weather is warm enough to lounge about on the beaches, if all you want is a relaxing holiday. All of the resort towns are fully open, so you are spoilt for choice of where to stay. There are the larger and livelier resort towns such as Albufeira, Praia da Rocha or Vilamoura or the smaller and more personable beach towns such as Carvoeiro, Olhos de Água or Alvor.

The slightly cooler weather in September makes the Algarve great for an activity holiday, such as cycling, golf, hiking, surfing, kayaking or deep-sea fishing. For a stunning coastal hiking route, there is the Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos or the mountains near Monchique. The best surfing is to the far west near Sagres, while Vilamoura is the centre for golfing holidays.

September is ideal to discover the culture and history of the Algarve with a touring holiday. There is the charming fishing town Tavira, the castles of Castro Marim, the Roman ruins at Estoi, the markets of Loule and the Moorish history of Silves. In the summer any serious sightseeing is too hot and draining, but in September it is enjoyable.

Insight: When most tourists consider a beach holiday to Portugal they instantly think of the Algarve, but Portugal has many more beautiful beaches and traditional resort towns.

Popular beach towns near Lisbon include Cascais, Estoril, Sesimbra or Ericeira. The Costa de Prata offers glorious beaches and charming towns (Nazaré, São Martinho do Porto or Costa Nova) or for somewhere completely undiscovered, consider the Alentejo coastline (Nova de Milfontes).

Porto in September

Porto is a treat in September, but is often overshadowed by the more well-known Lisbon or Algarve.

It takes two days to explore the city, and his makes it an ideal destination for a city break in September.

There is the quaint riverside Ribeira district to explore, the ancient cathedral district and endless opportunities for Port wine tasting in Vila Nova de Gaia. Porto is not just about history and culture, it boasts great nightlife, unique cuisines and a trendy forward-thinking vibe. No matter your age, you will love Porto.

Porto sits on the banks of the Douro River

Depending on your style of holiday, you may wish to take a relaxing boat cruise along the Douro River, as it passes through the scenic vine-covered hills around Peso da Régua and Pinhão. Equally, you could hire a car and explore the Douro region independently following the N222 road.

If the weather is hot and sunny and you fancy a trip to the beach, then head to the characterful beach town of Vila do Conde, or the vast sandy beaches of Espinho.

If you have more than three days in the Porto region, you may want to visit the common day trips, which include the historic city of Guimarães, the religious city of Braga or the coastal town of Aveiro. If you want to explore somewhere slightly away from the common tourist routes, consider visiting pretty Lamego or the port city of Viana do Castelo.

There is so much to see and do in the Porto region for a holiday in September and we can’t recommend it enough.

Lisbon in September

Lisbon has fewer crowds than in the summer, but it will still be busy, especially in the main tourist areas such as the Baixa and Belem districts or in the pretty town of Sintra.

There is so much to do and see in Lisbon, there is the ancient cobbled streets of Alfama, the grand plazas of Baixa, charming yellow trams to ride and the picturesque district of Belem to discover. Along with the vast array of sights, there is buzzing nightlife, a flourishing artisan scene and a social atmosphere about the city.

Lisbon extends over seven hills and the castle sits atop the highest

It takes three days of sightseeing to fully discover Lisbon, and then there are the day trips to further extend a holiday.

Sintra is a delightful town with lavish palaces and villas dotted around the hills of the Serra de Sintra. There is the pretty beach resort of Cascais, which is surrounded by gorgeous beaches or the authentic port city of Setubal. Slightly further is the walled town of Obidos or the historic city of Evora.

Lisbon is one of the greatest capital cities of western Europe, but in September (and with the whole of the summer) we suggest visiting Porto, as it is equally as good and is significantly less crowded. Lisbon is best visited in the late spring and especially June.

Alternative areas of Portugal to visit in September

Portugal is not just Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve, and some of the most magical areas of the country are off from the main tourist routes.

The Alentejo coastline is stunning in September but is little visited. Here vast pristine beaches await you, with huge waves for surfing and unspoilt countryside for hiking or cycling. Vila Nova de Milfontes is the main town of the region, while Porto Covo is a pretty village, and both are wonderful for a relaxing beach holiday.

The unspoilt Praia de Almograve beach, just south of Vila Nova de Milfontes

For a touring holiday, consider exploring the hilltop castles and rugged scenery of northeast Portugal. A tour of this dramatic region, which is barely known by tourists, could include the fortified towns of the Beira region (Trancoso, Almeida and Marialva), the mountains of the Serra da Estrela and the boulder-strewn town of Monsanto. September is one of the best months to visit the Serra da Estrela, as the scenic mountain roads aren’t clogged with Portuguese day-trippers.

Monsanto maybe remote from everything but is definitely worth visiting

For a more cultural touring holiday, consider the central region of Portugal. Destinations that could be visited include the university city of Coimbra, the Knights Templar fortified town of Tomar, the monastery at Batalha and the pilgrimage town of Fatima.

It is hassle-free to book through On the Beach. Their website is so well designed and gives you all the information/alternatives that you could possibly want. An excellent online service

Yes and no. Booking a holiday last minute can result in securing a bargain. Airlines are desperate to fill their planes, so if they have lots of seats still available near to the departure date then they may significantly reduce the cost of these in order to fill the plane. The same is true for hotel rooms. So if you are flexible about where you want to go, then you can secure a great holiday at a low price last minute.

If, however, you have a specific destination in mind and/or specific dates you want to go, then you are generally much better off booking as early as possible. This way you secure the holiday and can also benefit from early booking discounts.

It all depends on how flexible you can be. If you can be extremely flexible on your destination and hotel, then it is probably best to book just a couple of days before departure, nabbing the last couple of seats on a plane and the last available room in a hotel.

As with many things, flight pricing fluctuates based on supply and demand, so it’s not always clear cut which day is the cheapest to fly. But generally speaking, Tuesdays are the cheapest day to fly. If we are talking weekend flights only, Sundays are the cheapest day to jet away.

On the other side of the coin, Fridays are typically the most expensive day to fly.

Our Top Tip!

We love those spontaneous, ‘let’s just go’ last-minute holidays, but if you’re just a last-minute kind of holidaymaker then you can make your trip a little more smooth-sailing with some prep work. We’re not saying ditch the ‘last-minute’ part of your holiday, but if you know you’re going to book something last minute at some point in the future, start checking you have everything you need in advance (like your passport being in date, sun cream, summer clothes etc. ) If you gradually tick everything off your list before you even book, you’ll have zero running around to do before you go. Perfecto!

Is it worth flying to Mallorca at the beginning of September for a holiday? (first 2 weeks) will it be cold and how often does it rain? Google shows it’s warm, but here I often read that people complain about the weather in Mallorca in September. share your experience, comrades! nine0005

I was in Mallorca twice in September, once in the middle of the month, the other at the end, both times the weather was wonderful. Parents go there almost every year in late August – early September, only once they complained about rainy weather.

thanks for the feedback! can you tell me if it matters which part of the island to fly to? Are there any places that should be avoided? in terms of weather (strong wind for example) and also heard that in some places young people arrange wild parties, I would not want to get into such a place.

I flew to Mallorca many times in late September – early October to cheer up . In Germany it’s raining, windy, overcast, faces all around seem to have eaten lemons… but at this time in Mallorca…. SUMMER, SUN, +30, water +24, hot sand, everyone is happy and cheerful. nine0005

Since I was flying for 2-3 days, I didn’t go far from the airport and stopped, khe-khe, in S’Arenal. Yes, there are a lot of drunken Germans, but it’s full of free German and all kinds of girls who want to have fun As they say, it’s a shame to tell, but it’s very nice to remember Mallorca vari-vari-good, S’Arenal ve best!

we fly to Mallorca in September without fail and in May, June as it will. September is amazing! Like a velvet season on the Black Sea. There is no more sweltering heat and fewer people on the beaches, the sea is wonderful, you go in and you don’t want to climb out. About two years ago, on the day of departure, we left home in the rain, this was the only time in the last 6 years. We always fly away on the 28th, 30th. Mallorca is small, if it rains, then all over, not like in Tenerife, it rains more often in the north and a little colder. We were in Mallorca and in the north and in the south, no difference. There was no wind anywhere, but if you want to be 200% sure, go to small bays, next to the peguera, for example, where we even swam in a storm. The beauty!
And the first half of September is simply no doubt and can not be! nine0005

The Very British Reason Why Prince Louis Always Wears Shorts – NBC4 Washington

British Royal Family

By Lindsay Lowe | TODAY •

Jonathan Brady – Pool/Getty Images

This story was originally published Oct. 7, 2016.

When you see photos of Prince Louis, you probably focus on the 4-year-old’s sweet smile and cute cheeks.

But there’s something else that people have noticed about the young royal: He’s almost always wearing shorts!

Rain or shine, when the little prince steps out in public, he sports a pair of adorable shorts, often paired with knee socks, a preppy belt and a tucked-in polo.

It’s a trend also seen with Louis’ older brother, Prince George, too. So what’s the story behind the shorts?

In 2016, when George was a youngster, Harper’s Bazaar UK did some investigating, and they found that dressing young boys in shorts is a long-standing tradition among British royalty and aristocracy.

“It’s a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts,” British etiquette expert William Hanson told Bazaar. “Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent class markers that we have in England. Although times are (slowly) changing, a pair of trousers on a young boy is considered quite middle class–quite suburban. And no self-respecting aristo or royal would want to be considered suburban.”

U.S. & World

The day’s top national and international news.

Most boys graduate to full-length trousers at about 8 years old, Hanson explained. He said the shorts-only tradition may stem from the antiquated custom of “breeching,” which dates back centuries in the U.K.

Traditionally, he said, young British boys were dressed in gowns for the first few years of their lives, until being “breeched” and graduating to short trousers.

Louis and George follow in the footsteps of their father, Prince William, in the shorts department. The Prince of Wales sported a very similar look in his younger years:

Charles, Prince of Wales, and Diana, Princess of Wales, on holiday in Majorca, Spain, with their sons Prince William and Prince Harry, They are guests of King Juan Carlos of Spain and his wife Queen Sofia, They are staying at their holiday home, the Marivent Palace, which is situated just outside the capital city of Palma, 13th August 1988.

“The British upper set are always keen to hold on to tradition, and this one also silently marks them out from ‘the rest,” Hanson told Bazaar

Gran Canaria Calendar and September Events – Get Up.

Get Out. Get Lost.

While the rest of the northern hemisphere is getting ready to pull out their fluffy sweaters and get their pumpkin spice on, the sun is still shining and the weather is sweet here in Gran Canaria. Summer isn´t going anywhere any time soon, and this month is packed with events, live music and local festivals.

From the massive Pino party (La Fiesta del Pino in Teror) to the sounds of the SUM music festival and the many romerías and cultural events (especially the biggies on the north and west coasts!), there´s no time to get bored this September!

I´ll be adding new events all month as they come to my attention, so don´t forget to bookmark this page for updates.

If you have an event you´d like me to add to the calendar, please contact me here.

September 2019 Events in Gran Canaria

October 2019 Events in Gran Canaria

  1. La Fiesta del Pino in Teror celebrates Gran Canaria´s patron saint and is one of the biggest parties of the year. Absolutely not to be missed!
  2. Las Fiestas del Charco in La Aldea de San Nicolas is a massively important cultural event, going all the way back to the indigenous roots.
  3. La Fiesta de Sardina (Sardina Viva) is a perfect excuse to explore this little-known paradise along the Gáldar coast, with live music and a fish fry-up to boot!
  4. SUM Music Festival: The second addition of the SUM music festival in Las Palmas is sure to bring more great acts and great fun with both local and world artists.
  5. Romería Nuestra Sra. del Rosario en Vegueta is a traditional block party in the heart of historical Vegueta in Las Palmas. Culture & tradition without even having to leave the capital!

Día del Pino Reserved (public holiday)

Gran Canaria Norte

Bajada de la Rama in La Aldea de San Nicolas: Somehow I´ve yet to make it to this one… undoubtedly since the Pino party is quite frankly exhausting (and because no one ever wants to drive all the way to La Aldea).

That said, word on the street is that this Bajada de la Rama is quite similar to that of Agaete, which just so happens to be my favorite party on the island. If you´ve got a designated driver who doesn´t mind heading out to the wild wild west, this one is sure to be a blast.

Romería de San Nicolás in La Aldea: Festivities continue in La Aldea de San Nicolas, including mass, a procession, music and dancing.

September 11, 2019 (Wednesday)

Las Fiestas del Charco in La Aldea de San Nicolas: The charco (in Playa de La Aldea) is the symbol of this region and this is their biggest party. The day is filled with live music and dancing, and finally culminates with hundreds (thousands?) of fiesteros jumping into the charco with baskets, trying to catch fish bare handed in the style of the ancient indigenous peoples of the region.

10:00 am The procession to the charco begins
12:00 pm Music & dancing
17:00 pm The big event starts! Be here on time to watch the locals jump in a ¨fish¨with their bare hands… or join them!

Windvane failure for Golden Globe leader >> Scuttlebutt Sailing News

Published on January 27th, 2023

(January 27, 2023) – At 1815 UTC today, 1200 miles Northwest of Cape Horn, Simon Curwen (GBR) contacted the Golden Globe Race administrators to advise of the total failure of his Hydrovane steering gear. He had weathered the worst of a deep depression in 40 knots and 6-metre sea when the boat surged off a wave coming on the port side of his Biscay 36 Clara.

He was not towing a drogue but was sailing comfortably on course at the time. This action appears to have sheared a shaft on the topside of the vane body connecting the wind sensor which appears irreplaceable. Curwn did not take a spare on board to save weight and cannot replace the broken part with original components.

He is continuing under storm jib and lashed tiller while he decides on a course of action. He is okay, the boat has no other damage, and he requires no assistance. The weather conditions are improving with the wind moderating into high 20s after the passage of a front at 0000 UTC and the sea is decreasing steadily.

Curwen is still racing and weighing his options, but it is clear that he cannot race well without a wind vane. It is a major blow having held the lead from the start. The weather in the area looks like mild for the week ahead and the resourceful sailor can find ways to progress towards Cape Horn.

However, an at sea repair looks unlikely and stopping for spares to continue in Chichester class may be the only option as he is a long way from Les Sables d’Olonne in France, the finish line of the 2022 GGR. This opens new opportunities for Abhilash Tomy and Kirsten Neuschäfer, currently 50 miles apart, 1200 miles west of Simon who now have a chance to chase the current leader Simon.

Update on January 30, 2023: Curwen has officially declared CHICHESTER CLASS and is heading up the coast to a port of refuge for repairs and then intends to rejoin the GGR once complete.

About the 2022 Golden Globe Race
On September 4, 2022, the third edition of the Golden Globe Race started from Les Sables d’Olonne, France. Sixteen skippers will face eight months of isolation sailing 30,000 miles before finishing in Les Sables d’Olonne. Along the route there are several marks of the course and media requirements.

In 1968, while man was preparing to take his first steps on the moon, a mild mannered and modest young man was setting out on his own record breaking voyage of discovery. He had entered the original Golden Globe. Nine men started that first solo non-stop sailing race around the World. Only one finished. He was 29 year old Sir Robin Knox Johnston. History was made. Navigating only with a sextant, paper charts and an accurate and reliable time piece, Sir Robin navigated around the world.

In 2018, to celebrate 50 years since that first record breaking achievement, the Golden Globe Race was resurrected. It instantly gained traction with adventurers, captivated by the spirit and opportunity. Eighteen started with five finishers.

To embrace the original race, competitors must sail in production boats between 32 and 36 feet overall and designed prior to 1988 that have a full-length keel with rudder attached to their trailing edge. Additionally, sailors have limited communication equipment and can use only sextants, paper charts, wind up clocks, and cassette tapes for music.

September is an ideal month to visit La Palma. Although the island is never as busy as it’s Canary Island neighbours, the resorts and hotels are noticeably quieter. The day and nighttime temperatures remain very warm. We’ve looked at the most up-to-date weather data for La Palma, covering the last 12 years up to 2023, plus we’ve asked our team of travel bloggers for their first-hand experiences in order to answer the most frequently asked questions about La Palma weather in September.

How warm is it in La Palma during September?

The temperature is extremely stable in September with average highs of 27℃ and lows just 4℃ lower at 23℃. The UV index will be high at this time of year, so protection against skin and eye damage is needed.
Try to limit exposure between 10am and 4pm. Apply broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every few hours, even if it’s cloudy, or more frequently after sweating or swimming, and wear UV-blocking sunglasses too, and bear in mind that bright surfaces, such as sand and water increase UV exposure.

Does it rain in La Palma during September?

September is typically the wettest month in La Palma. On average, there will be 2 rainy days during the month, amounting to 59.6mm in total. That’s broadly comparable with the amount of rain we see in England during the summer months, and would be considered dry. There’s a small chance that you’ll catch a thunderstorm during your trip.

How warm is the sea in La Palma during September?

The water temperature around La Palma reaches a pleasant 24℃ during September. While generally considered warm, some people might find it a little on the cool side on entering the water. The hot air temperature will mean that you will feel comfortably warm when coming out of the water.

Cheapest places to holiday in February

Plummeting temperatures do little to help the onset of post-holiday blues, so what does that mean for travellers? A hot, long-haul trip to distant shores where the sun is shining, festivals are in full swing and prices are cheaper than January. If you embrace the cold and can’t wait to get the snow gear out, you’ll also find an abundance of powder in some of the world’s top ski resorts. Get ready to drag out the festive season just that little bit longer, with top holiday places to visit…

The Canarian potatoes recipe: How to make Papas Arrugadas

Papas arrugadas. They may look as though they’re just potatoes with more wrinkles than Mick Jagger and a crusting of salt on the top but…No, hang on, it’s true. The recipe boils down (ho-ho!) to potatoes and, er, salt. Some daring souls throw in a splash of lemon juice but I suspect that’s because they feel embarrassed to list a “recipe” with only two ingredients….

time to rest!

Most people have already finished their holidays, and the resorts are not so crowded, and the cost of tours has decreased significantly. In hot countries, the temperature has decreased slightly, and the rest has become more comfortable. The coming velvet season is a great time for a beach holiday. As at other times, resorts in Turkey are the most popular, and in the most popular Antalya, the weather is beautiful, not too hot. There is also no sweltering heat in Egypt or Israel, and you can have a great rest at the Red Sea resorts. For those who want to combine relaxation with a thalassotherapy course, we can recommend a holiday in Tunisia. nine0003

The south of Europe in September is characterized by wonderful weather, warm and sunny. The beaches of Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, Bulgaria and France offer high quality holidays. It is especially good at this time on the islands – the Canaries, Ibiza, Mallorca, Cyprus, Sicily, Crete, Malta and others. Oman is a country with a subtropical climate, so it is hot in September, there is practically no rain. September is the start of the season in Jordan, when mild heat replaces the summer heat.

Although many distant resorts are still poorly suited for recreation, lovers of the exotic can recommend a holiday on the islands of Bali or Mauritius. If you want to visit other distant countries, it is better to postpone your vacation for a month or two. nine0003

September is a great time for excursions in Europe, warm but not hot, the weather makes for a wonderful holiday!

In Italy, Spain, Greece, Croatia and France it is possible to combine a beach holiday with educational excursions. You can also visit the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Great Britain and other countries where you will get acquainted with local attractions.

If you want to go on vacation in the near future, we advise you to hurry with the purchase of the tour, because at the last moment all the places in the selected hotel may be occupied. We also recommend that you familiarize yourself with other offers on our website. nine0003

Reviews

Oles, good afternoon
While the impressions are fresh, I will write a review, suddenly it will come in handy for someone, well, you will have feedback from tourists)))
Marmaris itself is of course beautiful, just a wonderful town, now it is definitely on our list of holiday destinations. We will definitely go there with our elders. Thank you for the recommendation, it’s good that we went there.
Hotel.
First the pros:
The staff is unrealistically friendly and responsive, this is definitely not the case in all hotels. They always go to a meeting, all issues are immediately resolved. The room was extended without any problems until departure, there was no payment. Regarding the replacement of the room, they also went to a meeting without any questions (in the end, we did not change, they offered the same thing, only on other floors). Cleaning in the room is normal, for a tip she changed the bed and towels for us every day, although I said that it was not necessary. But she tried really hard. She even spun swans.
The kitchen is good, just a lot, everything is delicious. It was impossible to try everything. What happened on the first day of our stay is a mystery to me. In fact, breakfast was a runny omelet and sausages in hot sauce that no one could eat. Cereal, cheese and nutella. Everybody! Lunch was about the same. This of course shocked me. As I provided, that this will be the whole rest! Plus broken shower, lack of ventilation in the room and a small dirty beach. I don’t know… Maybe their director was ill these days???????? a day later everything was strangely different, the restaurant became normal, the shower and ventilation worked more or less.
Well, in principle, I wrote the cons.
The beach is dirty. And so it remained. I myself collected cigarette butts and bits around our sunbed so that Sanya could play in the sand, but he still didn’t, but he would dig up some kind of crap.

Weather Forecast for Tenerife from 29 August to 4 September |

August 30, 2016

Tenerife Weather 22 to 28 August
It was a very hot and sunny week across Tenerife, although yet another calima meant parts seemed more hazy than sunny. We spent the weekend on El Hierro which usually escapes the worst of the summer heat, but even there calima was noticeable with hot and sticky weather and hazy skies.

Weather Forecast for Tenerife 29 August to 4 September
A calima means another blisteringly hot start to the week with temperatures possibly reaching 34C. A yellow level weather alert covers the south, south west and east but not the north where temperatures should be around the 29C mark. From Wednesday things settle down with temperatures only varying by a degree or two on all coasts. There might be some showers during the second half of the week but these are likely to be in the hills and probably at night or early morning.

Weather in South Tenerife – It should be mainly a sunny week with some light cloud over the weekend. Apart from a yellow level weather alert at the start of the week with temperatures of 34C possible, temperatures should stick around 25/26C all week. There’s an outside chance of a shower or two over the weekend (5-15%), more than likely in the hills.

Weather in North Tenerife – It should be a week where there’s a mix of sun and light cloud most days with a 10 to 35% chance of showers during the second half of the week. Apart from a hot start to the week (29C), temperatures should stick around 24/25C from Wednesday onwards.

Weather in East Tenerife – After a mainly sunny start to the week, it should be a mix of sun and cloud in Santa Cruz and the east with a 5 to 50% possibility of light rain from Wednesday evening. A yellow level weather alert also affects the east at the start of the week but from Wednesday temperatures should stay around 23/24C.

Weather in South West Tenerife – The forecast for the south west mirrors that for the south.

Weather in the Mount Teide Crater – It should be mainly sunny in Teide National Park but there could be cloudy spells during Tuesday and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon with the possibility of showers on Sunday evening. It’s a similar outlook for the summit of Mount Teide, except with fewer clouds on Friday and Saturday afternoons. Temperatures should hover between 13 and 20C in the crater and 6 and 11C on the peak of Mount Teide.

The Tenerife Weather This Time in 2015
So what happened this time last year? ‘… Some parts of Tenerife mainly enjoyed a blisteringly hot and sunny week, whilst others experienced some cloudy periods with their sunshine. The north and east probably had the most sunshine.’
