Couples Guide to a Vacation in Spain

“It took me an hour to get to know you and a day to fall in love. But it will take me a whole lifetime to forget you,” according to a familiar Spanish saying. Whether planning a honeymoon in Spain or deepening the bond with your longtime paramour, you’ll likely come away with feelings that run as deep for the country.

Lip-Smacking Cuisine

Savor the country’s many flavors, enhanced by local agricultural products. Spain is the largest exporter of olive oil, and its fruity, nutty taste is added to much of the local cuisine. Linger in the shade of olive trees on a farm tour or visit a vineyard or citrus orchard to savor an even sweeter side of Spanish life.

Science shows that sharing meals with a loved one enhances emotional connection. Enjoy traditional tapas — small, savory dishes to enjoy with a drink. Ask your concierge or local host for directions to neighborhoods (barrios) where streets are lined with tapas and bars, and start your adventure. Grab a cozy table for two and see what the locals are ordering or check out each bar’s house specialty to get an authentic taste of local cuisine. To enjoy the freshest tapas and to dive deep into the local culture, go when it’s busiest, usually between 1:30 to 3 pm or 8:30 to 10:30 pm.

Perhaps the most romantic dish of all is paella, often called the national dish of Spain. It originated in Valencia in the eastern part of the country. This traditional rice dish has been a staple in the Spanish diet since the Moors introduced it 1200 years ago, and it’s a vital part of almost any social occasion. Although “Arroz” is the word for rice in Spain, the term “paella” has a possible romantic origin. Legend has it that a man made the dish for his fiance, calling it “para Ella” — “for her.”

Stroll Sandy Beaches

When you’ve had your fill, there’s nothing more natural to do than slow down and relax with a siesta in the sunshine. Spain is ideal for enjoying great weather, with long sunny days to unwind, particularly during the spring and summer.

Surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea on three sides, Spain is famous for its soft sand beaches kissed by sparkling waters that roll in, reflecting all hues of blue. Discover beaches that fit your unique style as a couple.

If you love to people-watch together, head to one of Spain’s most popular beaches. Barceloneta Beach in Barcelona or most beaches on Mallorca in the Balearic Islands serve up beachgoers hailing from around the world.

When ready for a quieter ambiance, head to more peaceful, less developed beaches such as Cala Mesquida on the northeastern side of Mallorca. This quarter-mile stretch of sand embraces a small bay surrounded by dunes and pines.

Snap some Insta-worthy photos with a backdrop of pink sand at Playa de Ses Illetes on Formentera or dramatic stone arches at Playa de As Catedrais. The beaches are particularly scenic at sunset as sunbeams drop through holes in the slate arches or bring out warm tones in the pink sand.

Watch the Sunset

At the end of a long day, take a sunset stroll or plan an end-of-day picnic with a romantic view. Although watching the sun drop into a blazing sea is stunning along any west-facing coastline, the beach isn’t the only option for a memorable end-of-day experience. Head to Caños de Meca along the Cadiz Coast to watch the reddish sun light up the sea with a golden glow as it drops behind the Trafalgar lighthouse.

Check out “the most beautiful sunset in the world,” according to former president Bill Clinton, who was blown away by the day-end view at Mirador de San Nicolás in Granada. The famous viewpoint looks out over the Alhambra, a medieval walled city once home to kings and sultans — which glows golden at dusk against a backdrop of colorful clouds.

Les Medulas, an ancient Roman gold mining site in the mountains of Northwestern Spain, provides dramatic pinnacles that take on pastel reflections in the fading sunlight. The UNESCO World Heritage Site preserves over 2000 ha of mines, tailings, and archaeological mining technology that can provide a day of adventure leading up to the dramatic, dusky views.

Romantic Any Time of Year

Although the prime months to visit Spain are April through October due to mild weather, romantic adventures await during all 12 months.

Beach lovers will thrive from June through September, the year’s hottest months. But if sauntering into the water in your swimwear isn’t a top priority, you’ll have fewer crowds and the opportunity to save a bit of money by going in the off-season. December brings temperatures in the low 60s during the daytime to coastal areas, although nights can dip into the low 40s or colder. Mountainous regions tend to be colder, with microclimates rolling out a lot of variabilities.

The weather is mostly dry. However, you should plan for a few days of rain if it’s in the forecast. Winter is a great time to explore castles, cathedrals, museums, and other stunning Spanish architecture. Sunny, mild days bring opportunities to meander hand in hand through magical forests such as Sendero el Bosque Encantado in Anaga Forest Nature Reserve in the Canary Islands or explore the soaring Mudéjar architecture of Aragon.

Shorter days bring dazzling light displays to every community and opportunities to cozy up by a fire with a plate of crisp churros and hot chocolate. Celebrate winter holidays with a local flair. Unique traditions include eating tiny grapes on New Year’s Eve for good luck and celebrating Three Kings Day with parades and gifts in early January.

Wherever you go in Spain or whatever you do, when you’re with the right person, you’ll find magic everywhere.

Beach holiday in autumn. Where to go to extend the summer

It is generally accepted that September is almost the best month for a beach holiday. In resorts and travel agencies, the period from early September to mid-October is called the “velvet season” and is actively advertised to vacationers: in autumn there are fewer people on the beaches and prices are lower. But, as you know, in all profitable offers you need to look for a catch, and here it lies right on the surface. In September, autumn begins in most European resorts with all the consequences – rains, winds and a general cold snap. And in countries located close to the equator, at this time of the year the rainy season, the danger of hurricanes and tsunamis increases – in general, you won’t get much rest either. But there is still a chance to swim and sunbathe, just choose your destination carefully and do not forget to check the weather forecast. Especially for those who dream of extending the summer a little, we have compiled a list of countries and regions with a climate ideal for a beach holiday in September-October.

Russian tourists fell in love with Turkey for its long holiday season, comfortable sandy beaches and excellent service. If the Aegean Sea is already quite cool in September, then in the Mediterranean, warm weather persists until November. September is the perfect month for holidays on the eastern part of the Turkish Mediterranean coast, from Kemer to Alanya, the temperature during the day here is 28-35°C, the water temperature is 25-28°C.

This island has a classic Mediterranean climate with distinct seasons. Summer here lasts from May to mid-September. By the end of the first autumn month, rare rains begin, but the humidity of the air drops and the scorching summer heat is replaced by a comfortable temperature of 25-28 ° C.

The only resort in mainland Spain where stable beach weather still holds by mid-September is the Costa Blanca. In October, prices for holidays in Malaga, Marbella and nearby tourist towns are reduced, and the water temperature is still quite acceptable for swimming – around 23°C. The air during the day warms up to a comfortable 25-26°C, but at night it is already quite cool – 18-20°C.

The Spanish Canary Islands are actually much closer to Africa than to Europe. The beach season here lasts almost all year round, a slight decrease in tourist activity is observed only in winter, so do not expect an autumn decrease in prices for holidays.

The Portuguese island of Madeira is located in the Atlantic Ocean 450 kilometers north of the Canary Islands, so it is slightly cooler here than in the Canaries. September is still suitable for swimming, while in October the water temperature drops to 22°C and lower, but the air still warms up to 25-27°C during the day.

In hot Tunisia, the high season lasts almost until the end of September, but October is already considered off-season. In mid-autumn, the weather is still quite comfortable – 25-27 ° C, and the water temperature along the entire coast of Tunisia is theoretically still suitable for swimming, but sometimes there is quite a strong wind. Rainfall in the mainland resorts of Tunisia, as a rule, is not very much, but on the island of Djerba, rains in October are quite common.

But in the Emirates, October is the peak of the beach season. During the day, the average temperature is 35°C, which is already very good compared to the September 38-40°C, and the sea water warms up to 25°C. The concept of the velvet season in the UAE more or less corresponds to November, although during the day it is still quite hot – 28-30°C, but in the evenings it rarely falls below 20°C, and the water temperature stays around 22-24°C. In winter, the weather in the Emirates, of course, is ideal, but the sea is usually quite cold.

If it’s still hot in Jordan in September, then October is the perfect month to combine a beach holiday with tourist trips around the country. The water temperature in the Red Sea in October is about 27°C, and in the Dead Sea it is even higher, about 31°C. During the day in Jordan in October it is very warm – about 30 ° C, but at night in the center of the country, in the region of Petra and Amman, it is quite cool.

The weather allows you to relax in Israel in the autumn on all three seas – the Red, the Dead and the Mediterranean. On the Mediterranean coast of Israel, autumn comes only at the end of October – November, in September at
Tel Aviv, Haifa and other coastal cities are still very hot, with average daytime temperatures usually above 30°C. You can relax on the Red and Dead Seas all year round, and the lowest season in these places is just in the summer – it’s too hot.

Eurowings expands at Graz and Berlin

Eurowings is significantly expanding its presence at Graz Airport and will be expanding its range of attractive direct flight destinations in the summer of 2023.

With the new destinations Chania (Crete) and Larnaca, as well as Hurghada, Karpathos, Corfu, Kos and Rhodes, seven destinations in the popular holiday destinations Greece, Egypt and Cyprus are on the schedule. An expansion of capacity to Mallorca is in the planning stage.

In addition to the expansion towards the south, Eurowings is increasing its range of city connections to Germany: the Lufthansa subsidiary will connect Graz, the capital of Styria in Austria, with Berlin and Hamburg in the 2023 summer flight schedule. Together with the connections to Düsseldorf and Stuttgart, travellers from Graz will then be able to choose from up to 25 weekly flights to the German city destinations. Business travellers in particular will benefit from greater flexibility on their trip.

In the course of this expansion, Eurowings will also station an aircraft at Graz Airport, making Graz  the eleventh Eurowings base and part of the growth course of the leading value carrier.

Eurowings destinations in the coming summer flight schedule:

Destination Weekly freqencies Day of operation
Berlin                         new 5x MO, WED, THU, FR, SUN

In other news, Eurowings is completing its program for the coming summer with five more destionations from Berlin (BER).

From March 2023, the Lufthansa subsidiary will also connect Nice (France), Zakynthos (Greece), Ibiza (Spain), Porto (Portugal) and Graz (Austria) directly with the German capital. At the same time, Eurowings is increasing its connections to existing destinations: for example, the Germans’ most popular island – Majorca – will be served up to three times a day in future, for a total of around 20 times a week. There will also be more flights to Sweden: Eurowings will be flying to the capital Stockholm up to eleven times a week from the start of the summer flight schedule. Flights in the basic fare start from 39.99 euros. Only a few weeks ago, Eurowings announced significant growth at its base in the German capital. Six stationed aircraft will take travellers from BER to around 30 destinations throughout Europe – whether on holiday or to a business meeting. A fourth aircraft will strengthen Eurowings’ growth path at the capital’s airport as early as the current winter flight schedule 2022/23.

    Costa Blanca weather September

What’s the weather like on the Costa Blanca in September?

Located on the southeastern coast of Spain, the popular Costa Blanca has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, damp winters. In September the region’s still lovely and warm, perfect for relaxing on the beach, swimming in the sea or exploring further inland. If you want to avoid the high season crowds but don’t want to compromise on beautiful weather, September is the ideal month to visit the Costa Blanca.

    Averages

In September, the average temperature on the Costa Blanca is 25°C, rising to 28°C in the peak of the afternoon. Although the high season has passed, the sun’s still very strong so make sure you protect yourself, especially in the direct sunlight. Around 40mm of rain’s expected this month, so although there’s a chance of wet weather, any showers will be short-lived. For days out on the beach, the Mediterranean waters are still a warm 24°C at this time of year, ideal for swimming, snorkelling or even scuba diving. After the sun goes down, temperatures dip to a low of 18°C.

What’s the weather like in Majorca in September?

Majorca, the largest of Spain’s Balearic islands, has warm weather in September. There’s different weather to be found around the island as it’s mountainous, although coastal areas get lots of sun and not much rain during September.

    Geographical influences

The mountains give Majorca’s south coast warmer and drier weather as they block north westerly winds and attract most of the rain. Things can get hot in September, but you’ll usually be kept comfortable by the local winds, which draw cooler air in from the sea. Breezes can be quite welcome in September, especially when hot winds blow in from Africa.

    Averages

Get ready to spend long days at the beach or by the pool in your swimwear during September, as the average high temperature’s 27ºC. You probably won’t need to wear much more than shorts and a t-shirt in the evenings as things stay pleasant, although it’s worth bringing a warmer top just in case. The sea temperature’s a nice and warm 25ºC, while humidity’s low and ranges from over 50% to slightly over 90%. Average rainfall’s 52mm across five rainy days.

    Daylight

During June, on average there’s 12 hours of daylight with eight hours of sunshine. With long sunny days and high UV levels, make sure you pack plenty of sun cream for those lazy days at the beach.

What happened in the Cup – November 17/18, 2022:

    • American Magic was back on the water in Pensacola with the breeze in the 10-12kts range, and had another good session in flat water.
    • INEOS Britannia stayed ashore in Majorca
    • Alinghi Red Bull Racing is back in the shed for an upgrade – not expected to emerge until the end of November.
    • Emirates Team New Zealand did not sail – probably because of the weekend and some awful weather in Auckland
    • Luna Rossa dropped the mast off their LEQ12, while rigged and before launching on Sunday – just over a week ago and is expected to be out for a “few weeks”.

    American Magic – AC75 Version 2 – Pensacola – November 18, 2022

Those who have been following these daily commentaries will be aware that sailing conditions in Pensacola, Florida and the 2024 America’s Cup venue of Barcelona are at opposite ends of the foiling sea state spectrum.

In a near mirror image of the previous day’s session, American Magic clocked up 70nm, on Pensacola Bay in flat water and 10-12kts breeze. Ideal conditions for speed testing and gathering performance data – but a long way from the awkward sea state and inconsistent breeze expected in Barcelona in August-October 2024 (see video at bottom of this commentary).

American Magic – AC75’s underwater configuration as not changed since its first launch – November 18, 2022 – Pensacola, Fl – photo © Paul Todd/America’s Cup

Patriot, American Magic’s upgraded AC75 sailed initially with a J2 jib for 50 minutes at the start of the session, before changing up to the full hoist J1 jib for the three and a half hours of the session.

As with yesterday, the start of the session waited for the northerly wind to build, with the AC75 having to be towed onto its foils for 50% of the runs.

There were seven tow-ups and seven self starts to get foiling. Winds of this strength are above the minimum for racing in the America’s Cup and AC75’s would normally have expected to self-start, and particularly so in Patriot which is an AC75 that is lighter the version sailed in the 2021 America’s Cup.

The team were joined by a school of dolphins, who turned on an aerobatic display during one of Patriot’s foiling fly-pasts.

The observation team note that the AC75 was on its foils for durations of 1-6 minutes for the majority of the day with longer foiling times at the end of the day in the range 8-19 minutes.

“We had to wait for the good bit of the breeze in the afternoon. But once it filled in it was really nice. That’s good as it gets,” said flight controller Andrew Campbell, a 2008 Olympian in the Laser class, and silver medalist at the Star Europeans. He is also part of the USA SailGP team, as well as being with American Magic in the 2021 America’s Cup.

“We’re pushing the boat hard every day,” he told the AC37 Joint Recon team on their return to the dock. “It’s not always rainbows and unicorns out there. We’re trying to make incremental gains. So when we do get good days like this to hack into, we’re going make the most of them.”

American Magic gets out of balance and starts a splashdown – November 18, 2022 – Pensacola, Fl – photo © Paul Todd/America’s Cup

“We’re trying to make gains and learnings in every position on the boat. So every hour we can get with every person on board is important. There’s a lot of people in new spots. We’re trying to make gains everywhere we can.”

Campbell put the splashdowns during gybes as “gybing too hard. Making these boats get around the racetrack is not easy. And flight control is a learning process for newbies and for veterans,” he added.

American Magic – Pensacola’s flat water enables the AC75 to be flown perfectly with the hull forming an effective endplate between the rig and the water surface – November 18, 2022 – Pensacola, Fl – photo © Paul Todd/America’s Cup

As can be seen from the GPS track graphic the tracks are quite random, as the crew again chased speed. Wind sheer or different wind strength, higher up the rig may account for the worse than expected startups and course directions. Only the American Magic crew know this data, which is not available in the AC37 Joint Recon system.

Not too much weight should be placed on maneuver stats at this stage of the program, as they are easily remedied with practice. At this stage it is more important the new crew to come up to speed and develop teamwork. The upwind dry tacks ratio was good. Gybes were only 50/50 on what is usually the easier maneuver to stay dry.

There was no mention in the Recon team reports of the speeds achieved in the session, however one would expect these to be in the same range as the previous day in slightly lighter conditions of 30kts upwind and 40kts reaching.

The trick for American Magic will be to reproduce the performance numbers of Pensacola in the awkward sea state and breezes of Barcelona.

The team is expected to relocate to Barcelona as soon as a base is complete.

Winter is moderate: +6…+16°C, and the water cools down to +14°C. In general, Mallorca’s weather is suitable for tourist visits from April to November.

Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain – “Majorca in September: weather, prices, parties, internet, where you can go without a license. »

My boyfriend and I went to Mallorca, Magaluf during the velvet season – from 8 to 18 September 2018. with Anex Tour. We bought a tour 4 months before the trip, paid 120,000 rubles. (3* hotel, breakfasts + dinners, visa). After seeing enough photos and videos with azure water and white sand, we decided that it would be worth it.

    About the weather

I must say right away that we were very unlucky with the weather. Of the 10 days that we were there, it was completely sunny for a maximum of 2, and for a few more days the sun shone for half a day. 2 days were completely overcast and rainy. It even got to the point that we could not leave the hotel to go to the cafe for lunch. Almost every evening a very strong wind blew from the sea, it was cold in shorts and a T-shirt. But worst of all, because of these winds, the next day the sea left much to be desired. There was no question of any transparent water, when we entered the water up to the waist, the bottom was no longer visible. The weather greatly spoiled the impression of the island, so perhaps my review will not be entirely objective. But that is why I do not advise anyone to go there to rest in September.

    About the Internet

We are all dependent on the Internet. But how else can you navigate in an unfamiliar country? Therefore, all our trips always begin with a search for SIM cards. Previously, they were sold in Tabacco stores, where the guide shamelessly sent us. But now there are no maps for a long time. Now you need to look for operator stores. The closest to us was “Lebara shop”. We paid 20 euros for 10 GB of internet. The seller himself inserted the card and activated it. Everything turned out to be simple here.

    About parties

We decided to choose Magaluf, expecting a lot of youth, fun and dancing until you drop. After traveling to Cyprus, where it was impossible to drag me off the dance floor before the bar closed, I expected that this vacation would certainly be unforgettable. But we were disappointed. If in Cyprus the age of vacationers was 25-35 years old, then here it is 16-20. For the most part, these were Englishmen who still do not know how to drink, therefore, at best, they slept in even rows on benches by midnight. The more persistent walked the streets, and with shouts they were looking for fun. There were no outdoor clubs, so everyone crowded into stuffy little bars. Once we decided to buy tickets for 25 euros for a foam party at the BCM club. It was a very long evening. I am 27 years old, but I felt like an old woman there. People began to pull up closer to one in the morning. The most fun there was the British. They came, as a rule, in large companies, already under a degree, and began to look for girls for themselves. It looked very funny, teenagers with hungry eyes approached all the women’s companies, and they did not know how to get rid of them. The music there was just as terrible as in many clubs in Moscow – just unrecognizably mixed songs, to which most did not even know how to dance, so they just shifted from foot to foot, clutching glasses with strange cocktails that they gave out for free. There was very little alcohol, if any. We steadfastly waited for the foam to begin, in the hope that it would become more fun, but did not wait. At half past two we went home. Then we learned that the foam is allowed at 3 o’clock. It is very strange to call it a foam party if the foam is allowed only at the end of 1 time. All in all. Either I’m already old for such places, or, indeed, this resort is made for the British, but we are done with parties there.

    About food

Being one of the most picky and selective people in the world about food, I would give 5 stars only for local restaurants. We had breakfast and dinner at the hotel, for a 3 * it was excellent. It’s just a pity that again drinks at dinner for money. A glass of wine – 2.5 euros, a bottle from 8 euros. The food in the restaurants was excellent. Every day we went to a new place for lunch. I especially liked El Mundo, Pirates Beach Bar & Grill and The Olive Tree. On average, our check came out for two for 35 euros – these are 2 dishes and alcohol. A liter of sangria costs from 10 euros. We went to eat seafood at Pardo’s. There, prices were lower than in restaurants in the neighborhood, and I still remember the lobster and lobster).

For fresh oysters, go to the fish market in Palma. 1 piece costs from 2.5 euros, you can ask them for a glass of wine or champagne.

We also tried fast food, just out of interest, to compare the taste with Moscow. KFC, McDonald’s and Subway are exactly the same. Burger King in Russia is tastier. But Pizza Hut can not be compared with ours. It was the most delicious pizza I have ever had on the island.

If you buy food, water, alcohol in your room, do not under any circumstances do it in shops near hotels. There, for one bottle of water, you will be charged 1-2 euros, when in a supermarket you can buy water for a week for 1 euro. We went to Aldi, where we bought water, alcohol and a snack, and jamon as a gift to our homeland.

    About entertainment

Be sure to allocate 1 day to visit the capital of the island – Palma de Mallorca . The city is beautiful: colorful, clean and cozy in a European way. See the Almutdain Palace and the Cathedral.

Drive to Bellver Castle. We overestimated our strength and decided to go there on foot. To get to it you need to climb 450 steps under the scorching sun. I thought that I would stay somewhere in the middle, it was so hard.

When we got up there, we saw red hop-on & hop-off buses. It was necessary to initially go to them, but we did not understand where they stop and how to catch them. Please note that the castle is closed on Mondays! Guess what day we got there)

Go to the water park Western Water Park . There are slides for every taste, a cool atmosphere of the wild west. The queues for the slides are not critical. After about a couple of hours of our stay there, the sun went behind the clouds, it became cold to get out of the water, so we did not spend as much time there as we would like.

Kathmandu Park I advise you to visit only if you have children, or bad weather does not allow you to bask in the sun. I wrote a separate review about it.

Having read the reviews that there was nothing to do in Port de Soller, we decided not to waste time on it, but we wanted to take a ride on the old train . Therefore, we bought tickets to the city of Bunyola, only 9 euros per ticket. The journey takes 25 minutes, which is enough to feel the atmosphere.

Closer to the city, very beautiful views of the mountains begin. 3 km from the station are the stunning Alfabia Gardens . We easily covered this distance on foot, despite the fact that 2 km go along the highway.

In fact, these are not just gardens, but a whole estate surrounded by a beautiful park, so when you get tired of walking down the street, you can go into the estate and see how people lived in the 16th century. You can also go to the utility rooms, the stables and the mill. On the way back, directly from the estate, you can take a bus directly to Palma train station. The journey takes only 20 minutes.

If you have never tried diving, this is a great opportunity to learn. We contacted the company Big Blue Diving” , which is located in Magaluf. Without a certificate, no one on the high seas will dump you from a boat, of course. But they will explain the whole theory to you, why it is so important to breathe correctly, what to do in various situations under water. Then there will be a half-hour training right at the shore. The instructor will deal personally with each person, train under water, check how you have learned certain tricks. When he makes sure that everyone is ready, you can swim deeper. The dive itself takes no more than 20-30 minutes. The maximum depth was 4 meters, you can emerge at any moment, so even the most cowardly can try to overcome themselves. Tip for fragile girls: take off the balloon right on the beach. When I tried to climb the stairs from the beach to the pier, the balloon pulled me back, and I lay like a turtle, jerking my arms and legs, until the instructor lifted me up. All this training falls under the category of “try scuba diving”, it came out 138 euros for two.

If you don’t have a license, but want to travel to different beaches, you can rent bicycles . It was in Mallorca that I first met an electric bike. He multiplies your every move by 3 times. When you go uphill, it saves a lot. In 6 hours we traveled 5 beaches – Cala Vinas, Cala Falco, Playa El Rei, Cueva de Portals Vells and Santa Ponsa. To be honest, only Playa El Rei with azure-green water and the observation deck at Cueva de Portals Vells impressed.

We rented bikes from The Olive Tree, two for 40 euros per day (from 11am to 7pm). Without this additional engine, we would not have gone half the way, because the number of descents and ascents was insane.

90,000 $4 billion in poker: how a Canadian with Soviet roots made money on excitement

In the summer of 2014, the son of PokerStars founder Mark Scheinberg sold the family company for almost $4 billion, overnight “turning into one of the youngest billionaires on the planet,” wrote Bloomberg. This decision drew a line under the 13-year history of the joint business of the father and son of the Scheinbergs.

Mark Sheinberg was born in 1973 in Israel to a family of emigrants from the USSR. His father Isai still leads a closed life: there are only a few photographs of him and not a single interview. It is only known that he was born in the Lithuanian SSR, at 19In the 60s he studied at the Mechanics and Mathematics Department of Moscow State University, and after graduation he moved to Israel, where he served in the army for several years. Nothing is known about the mother of the younger Sheinberg.

After completing his military service, Isai began to work “in his specialty” – he became an employee of the Israeli branch of IBM. In 1986, when his son Mark was already 13 years old, Isai received an invitation to work in the Canadian office of the corporation, and the Sheinberg family moved to the town of Richmond Hill near Toronto. Early 19In the 90s, Isai was already an IBM representative in the consortium to develop Unicode, a universal character encoding standard for displaying written languages.

Mark was not very impressed with his father’s professional success. Enrolling at the prestigious Fanshawe College of Technology, he himself dropped out a year later and traveled. A completely different passion of his father forced him to take up computer technology again – Isai was an avid poker player and, at the peak of the “dot-com era”, got excited about the idea of creating an online casino. Mark became the co-creator of the concept and managing director of the Rational Entertainment Enterprises company created for this. nine0004

    New era

PokerStars online marketplace operated by Rational launched on September 11, 2001 – the same day that the planes , captured by terrorists, destroyed the towers of the World Trade Center in New York. Coincidentally, nearly a decade later, one of the 9/11 heroes will win $1 million on a poker show hosted by PokerStars in association with Fox. The winner was former New York police officer Mike Kosovsky, who was among the first to come to the aid of people at the World Trade Center. nine0004

At the start, the PokerStars site attracted players with its user-friendly interface and its convenience, after only three months, Scheinberg allowed users to risk not conditional, but real money. Due to the high margins of the business, already in the summer of 2002, his company organized the World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) – an Internet analogue of the leading poker championship World Series of Poker (WSOP).

Subsequent collaboration with the WSOP led to the creation of a qualifying competition on the PokerStars platform, the winners of which would qualify for the main event. In May 2003, Chris Moneymaker, a provocative Tennessee accountant who had previously only played at PokerStars, became the first ever WSOP winner to qualify online. This event gave rise to the so-called “Moneymaker effect” – a surge of interest in poker tournaments that occurred in the mid-2000s. nine0004

The Sheinbergs not only “caught the wave”, but partly shaped the fashion for poker. Over the next few years, Rational was involved in organizing tournaments on cruise ships, in the largest casinos around the world (in particular, in Monte Carlo and Lisbon). And already at the beginning of 2006, the PokerStars project was estimated at more than $ 2 billion: London’s The Times reported that the owners of Rational hired NM Rothschild to sell or IPO the business at exactly that price.

Rational’s other business is active advertising and brand awareness. The “faces” of PokerStars have become a whole “pool” of well-known athletes who are fond of poker and collaborate with the site. Among them are tennis players Rafael Nadal and Boris Becker, football players Gianluigi Buffon and Ronaldo, two-time winner of the Golden Ball. nine0004

    Poker as a business

According to consulting firm h3 Gambling Capital, the global online poker market in 2013 was worth $4. 1 billion (the amount spent by online poker players). By the end of 2017, the market volume will exceed $6 billion , predicts h3 Gambling. The growth driver should be the US market, which is still mostly legally closed to online poker. So far, online poker is legal only in the states of Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware. But Morgan Stanley analysts suggest that by 2020 the number of such states will increase to 20, and then the online poker industry in the United States will bring $5.2 billion per year.

PokerStars earns mainly on rake (rake) – a fee for playing poker, which the organizer takes from each played pot. The revenue of Oldford Group Limited, the holding company that unites the PokerStars and Full Tilt poker sites through the Sheinberg-founded Rational Group, in 2013 amounted to $ 1.13 billion (an increase of 16% compared to the previous year), follows from the group’s financials, published by its new owner of Amaya Gaming last fall. Net profit in 2013 increased by 33% to $416.4 million .

For the first half of 2014, Oldford Group’s revenue was $568 million and net profit was $218 million .

PokerStars expects to earn on the growth of the audience, says Oldford. In 2012, PokerStars launched the first real money mobile app. The company expects gambling and gaming products on the Full Tilt platform acquired in 2012 to be a significant source of new revenue for it. nine0004

    Legal trouble

Rational was originally registered in Costa Rica, but in 2005 the Scheinbergs decided to move their headquarters to the Isle of Man. This step was explained both by preparations for a possible entry into the London Stock Exchange and by the zero corporate tax rate in this territory.

Another reason is the offensive of the American authorities on online gambling. In October 2006, the Unlawful Internet Casinos Act (UIGEA) came into force, prohibiting the owners of online sites from accepting “transactions in the form of bets” from users. At first, legal loopholes allowed PokerStars to continue operating in the United States. But in 2009New York Attorney Preet Bharara became interested in PokerStars. Based on the testimony of the former head of the electronic payment operator Intabill, he accused the management of PokerStars and two other major online sites of money laundering and violating the UIGEA. In April 2011, their sites were blocked in the United States.

PokerStars was eventually temporarily unblocked to allow players to pay back, but Full Tilt Poker (another banned site) was not exempted. A year later, the owners of PokerStars entered into a deal with the US Department of Justice, under which they paid the authorities $547 million and another $184 million to Full Tilt customers whose accounts were frozen during the investigation. In return, PokerStars received all of Full Tilt’s assets. Nevertheless, the criminal charges against Scheinberg Sr. have not yet been dropped, the way to America has been ordered for him. nine0004

How the USA fought gambling online

The first full-fledged law against illegal casinos was passed in the USA in 1961. At the beginning of that year, a Democratic administration came to power, and the new Justice Department, Robert Kennedy, proposed replacing the relevant criminal statute with a more modern law that would take into account the development of telecommunications. For this reason, the new act was called the “Wire Act” (Federal Wire Act). nine0004

In 2002, several gamblers who lost significant amounts filed a joint lawsuit against their credit card operators, Visa and MasterCard. They allegedly “did not interfere with the use of their cards in the casino”, encouraging players. The judge rejected the complaint, and after the appeal court confirmed that the Wire Act applies only to bets related to sports and sweepstakes.

Nevertheless, the Ministry of Justice continued to assert that the law applies to the entire Internet gambling market, and two years later forced Google and Yahoo! remove advertisements of such sites from their sites. A year later, in November 2005, a group of Republican congressmen introduced the UIGEA act, referring, in particular, to the problems that banks and credit card operators face because of Internet gambling. nine0004

The new law expanded the concept of a bet as “risking something of value as a result of a competition or game of chance.” The status of poker is still a matter of controversy, and many online casino operators considered it a game of strategy, not “luck”, and therefore refused to leave the American market until the scandalous lawsuit against PokerStars and others in 2011.

The vagueness of the UIGEA has allowed for the last two years to revive online casinos in the United States at the local level. The “locomotives” are the traditional centers of gambling – the states of Nevada (Las Vegas) and New Jersey (Atlantic City). An inter-regional “ecosystem” of these states and the state of Delaware is currently in the process of being created to introduce uniform rules for online casinos. nine0004

    A clean slate

At the risk of remaining in the US market after the UIGEA went into effect in 2006, PokerStars took over from PartyPoker as the world’s largest online poker site. Despite further legal proceedings, due to which PokerStars was forced to leave the United States, the Sheinberg company still retains this title: as of the evening of February 26, 186,000 users simultaneously played on the site (of which about 26,000 were for real money). . human). Other poker sites are far behind in terms of overall audience. nine0004

Since Rational made a deal with the investigation, the UIGEA has been relaxed in Delaware, Nevada and New Jersey. However, PokerStars and the Scheinbergs themselves still live with the “black mark” from the United States. For example, in 2013, New Jersey authorities extended the site’s licensing ban for another two years. Under these conditions, the Scheinbergs began looking for an investor already entrenched in the American market.

This buyer was the Canadian Amaya Gaming, which agreed to buy Rational in its entirety for $4.9billion in cash. The deal helped Amaya become the world’s largest publicly traded gambling company. After the announcement of the purchase of its shares on the Toronto Stock Exchange, the price doubled in a day, the trading volume reached 10 million shares – 20 times more than the average before.

After closing the deal in August 2014, the Scheinberg family went out of business entirely. For his 75% stake in Rational, Mark Sheinberg received $3.7 billion. By February 2015, Forbes estimates his net worth at $4.1 billion. success,” Sheinberg emphasized in a farewell letter to his employees. nine0004

An unimaginable number of microbes live around us all the time, a great variety of dangerous viruses, unpleasant, pathogenic bacteria, and spores.

Cleaning only cleans part of the surfaces. Boil and process perhaps only some of the items that come into direct contact with humans. And in general, the entire environment still remains contaminated. Therefore, for prevention, it is necessary to contact special companies that provide disinfection services. nine0004

Disinfector, completely sprayed, is able to settle on any accessible, available surfaces, reliably destroys many microorganisms in the air. Modern, high-quality products are completely non-toxic not only for adults, but even for children and pets.

Where to go for every month of the year

The most popular months to visit a country don’t always equate to the best months to see it. While most of Europe is sunniest in July and August, for instance, it’s also when it’s at its busiest thanks to the school holidays. Some places are completely off limits depending on the time of year; no tour operator would take you to Antarctica in September when it’s life-threateningly cold. We run the rule on where to go during each month of the year.

Golden Globe Race lifesaving regulations >> Scuttlebutt Sailing News

    Published on December 1st, 2022

Before the start, fulfilling the safety and qualifying requirements for the 2022-23 Golden Globe Race were a major hurdle. However, it was these unique regulations which played an important part in saving Tapio Lehtinen following the sinking of his yacht off South Africa.

When Lehtinen woke to a loud bang, he stepped into knee deep water with more flooding like a river from the engine compartment. With no time to think, he prepared the Plastimo “special edition” GGR life raft in the cockpit and donned his dry survival suit, grabbing the small GGR communications emergency grab bag on the way out.

With the raft inflated beside the boat, the securing line he had re-set with a slip knot had let go. When it began drifting away, he could not go below for the main grab bag, as water was above waist height and the decks were awash, so he jumped for the raft now three metres from the boat.

He had also been unable to reach his EPIRB inside the boat, which later automatically water activated, sending the first DISTRESS alert. But it went down with the yacht 20 minutes later taking his two other emergency beacons with it.

Fortunately, GGR safety regulations require a PLB distress beacon and waterproof VHF handheld radio with GPS to be packed inside the raft. In the shock of the moment, he forgot the PLB was in the raft, finding it nearly two hours later and turned it on. At that point it was his only distress beacon.

Inside the GGR comms grab bag, his spare satellite phone was damaged while boarding the raft. (His main sat phone stored at the chart table went down with the ship). Also, inside was the backup waterproof YB3 satellite tracker and texting unit.

GGR control, on learning of the EPIRB Distress and noting ASTERIA’s onboard Tracker was no longer transmitting, assumed the boat had sunk and that Lehtinen was probably in the raft. GGR remotely activated the backup YB3 and noted it had been powered on. This was exciting news, and a message was sent “Are You OK?”

Lehtinen responded shortly after that he was in the raft, all was well but Asteria had sunk. This then gave a second position of the raft that was linked to the GGR 24hr online tracking page for all to see. Using the same YB3 unit, Lehtinen was able to send and receive short messages from the raft, a great comfort for him as a survivor, his family and all his followers around the world. His rescue was a success.

“I know from experience over the past 30 years that when all goes wrong you may not get your grab bag, so what’s in the raft is all you may have,” noted race organizer Don McIntyre. “I always pack a distress beacon in my rafts and now a VHF/GPS, so I made it mandatory for GGR too.

“I also lost a good friend deep in the Southern Ocean in the 1994 BOC challenge when his 48hr EPIRB battery ran out before the ship arrived. We now insist on the YB3 unit in the GGR comms grab bag which tracks every 15 minutes for months, including two-way texting. Tapio was happy to have both.”

It is a long-held tradition of the sea, that if a mariner is in Distress and declares a “Mayday”, all other mariners will use their best endeavors to immediately assist if they are safely able to do so. Such was the case for Abhilash Tomy (IND) on Bayanat and Kirsten Neuschäfer (RSA) on Minnehaha when asked by GGR control to assist in the rescue of fellow GGR entrant Tapio Lehtinen on ASTERIA.

Both altered courses immediately and stopped racing on receiving the request. The rescue was successful, and to calculate time compensation for both sailors, all the facts affecting both sailors were considered, focusing on the primary impacts of:
    • Time away from the course
    • Changing and new weather systems on resuming the course.
    • Position at the start and finish of their diversion.

Based on the information the following time compensation has been determined:
    • Kirsten Neuschäfer: 35 hours + 30 litres of fuel
    • Abhilash Tomy: 12hrs

About the 2022 Golden Globe Race
On September 4, 2022, the third edition of the Golden Globe Race started from Les Sables d’Olonne, France. Sixteen skippers will face eight months of isolation sailing 30,000 miles across five oceans solo non-stop and unassisted.

In 1968, while man was preparing to take his first steps on the moon, a mild mannered and modest young man was setting out on his own record breaking voyage of discovery. He had entered the original Golden Globe. Nine men started that first solo non-stop sailing race around the World. Only one finished. He was 29 year old Sir Robin Knox Johnston. History was made. Navigating only with a sextant, paper charts and an accurate and reliable time piece, Sir Robin navigated around the world.

In 2018, to celebrate 50 years since that first record breaking achievement, the Golden Globe Race was resurrected. It instantly gained traction with adventurers, captivated by the spirit and opportunity. Eighteen started with five finishers.

To embrace the original race, competitors must sail in production boats between 32 and 36 feet overall and designed prior to 1988 that have a full-length keel with rudder attached to their trailing edge. Additionally, sailors have limited communication equipment and can use only sextants, paper charts, wind up clocks, and cassette tapes for music.

July. A luxury holiday in the Canary Islands.

I have been a fan of holidays in the Canary Islands for a long time. I went there eight times already, both alone and with my family. So this time I did not change my tradition and in July we went to this truly heavenly place. Yes, the trip is not cheap, but it’s worth it.

By the way, July is not the best time, but we had no other choice, it happened with our holidays. In terms of the number of vacationers, Tenerife and other resort towns of this archipelago are very similar to provincial towns near Moscow, but during this period it seems that half of Moscow gathers in them.

Everything else is great here! Tenerife is located in a picturesque hilly area, right at the very foot of the volcano. Can you imagine how gorgeous the views are there? In addition, there are ancient buildings on which you can clearly study the history of this Spanish archipelago.

Canarian cuisine is a separate issue. Delicious, nutritious and varied. The Spaniards do not skimp on portions, especially there are delicious spaghetti, meat and vegetables in various forms. We will be back there soon!

July. Expensive holiday in the Canary Islands.

My work colleague persuaded me to go to the Canary Islands. Somewhere I got an inexpensive, in her opinion, tour and we went to the island of Tenerife. The island is simply magnificent, you can’t say anything: all in flowers, palm trees and every day there is a feeling of a holiday!

But I did not guess correctly with pocket money.

A guide to Lanzarote’s buses – Gazette Life

For new residents or tourists, it can be a little confusing to navigate the island’s bus system, with many not in the know about the best sources of information and mobile apps. Here’s your guide to Lanzarote’s buses.

Photo: Intercity Bus Lanzarote Facebook page.

In this article we will give you a comprehensive guide to getting around on Lanzarote and list the best sources of information and times. You’ll soon be travelling the island at peace, knowing that you’re going in the right direction!

    Your Bus Bible

Not only is it the official website for the island’s buses, but it also tells you everything you need to know. Arrecifebus.com should be the first place you visit when you’re unsure of which buses to get and at what time they arrive/depart.

It lists the many lines and timetables, shows a map of the lines, had downloadable travel brochures and an FAQ section for all your questions.

    Appsolutely Brilliant

The Moovit App is another essential for those that use the buses regularly. Simply enter the name of the area you wish to visit, and the app will find the appropriate bus lines to take, and how to get to each stop.

The app also lists bus times; however, buses can be late and often are late on Lanzarote. You can find the Moovit app on the Apple Store and Google Play store.

    IntercityBus Lanzarote

The IntercityBus app is another brilliant addition to the roster and acts as an all-in-one place to access your bus card balance, next stops, bus routes, and lines and time tables. The app itself can show you your remaining balance on your bus card, and will open the appropriate webpages or apps when you are trying to find out information on lines, timetables and routes.

    Bus Travel Cards

If you use the buses often then you may want to think about applying for a bus card from the main bus station in Arrecife (next to the UD Lanzarote football ground).

There are a couple different cards, which allow you to utilise a 10%, 20%, 30% or 50% discount on bus fares. The cards are contactless and are scanned on the bus when stating which stop you wish to travel to. The percentage discount cards can be recharged on the buses themselves.

Some of the available discount cards are, BONO GENERAL (10% discount on bus fares, which anyone can apply for), BONO RESIDENTE (20% discount on bus fares, only residents can apply), BONO JOVEN (30% discount on bus fares, only residents can apply), BONO FAMILIA NUMEROSA (30% on bus fares, for resident families), BONO DISCAPACIDAD (50% discount on bus fares, for residents that suffer from a disability). Find all the card options here: https://arrecifebus.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2218&lang=es

For those that use the bus daily, the BONO RESIDENTE CANARIO card is the one for you. For just 20 euros a month (and an €2 charge when you apply for the card for the first time) you will have unlimited free travel on buses for 30 days at the point of purchase. It is important to note that this card must only be recharged at the main Arrecife Bus Station, you cannot recharge it on buses.

To apply for a card you must take a trip up to the Arrecife Bus Station. Make sure to bring a passport sized headshot, a copy of your DNI or NIE, residency certification and an updated empadron.

Until recently I had only assumed that you could purchase 1 month at a time on the BONO RESIDENTE CANARIO card, however, you can purchase up to 3 months in one go costing a total of 60 euros. Upon purchase you will receive a receipt which has the expiry date written on it.

Unfortunately for those that use the 20 euro resident card, there is still no way to make the purchase online so you must travel up to the main bus station in Arrecife every time you wish to recharge the card.

    Delay Notices

To keep up to date with any bus delays, traffic jams or bus route diversions, follow the IntercityBus Lanzarote twitter account here: https://twitter.com/intercitybuslz

BUS DISCOUNTS INTRODUCED (From Sept 1st until Dec 31st 2022)

The Lanzarote Cabildo have just announced a series of bus card discounts in order to encourage the use of public transport, “we are increasing public transport aid like never before, we are aware that the current situation affects many”, stated Cabildo President, María Dolores Corujo.

There will be a 50% discount on the Lanzarote bus cards: bono residente, bono joven, bono familia numerosa, bono discapacidad, bono desempleado, bono pensionista, bono estidiante and bono pensionista especial.

For those that use the 20 euro bono residente canario card (which allows for unlimited travel) the cost per month will be halved to 10 euros.

THE DISCOUNTS ARE AUTOMATICALLY APPLIED FOR EXISTING CARD USERS

TAKE NOTE: The discounts will run from September 1st until the end of the year only.

    FREE TRAVEL FOR WORKERS

In addition to the discounts, the Cabildo have announced that they will be allowing free travel for bono residente canario users who use the buses to get to work more than 20 times per month.

In order to receive your free bono residente canario months, you must register at least 20 trips to work in each month that the discounts will run for (from September 1st until 31st December) or 80 trips total between the dates specified.

The free travel isn’t transferable and only the sole user must use the card. Failure to comply with the specifications may result in the user having to pay the full amount for the period of time, totalling 40 euros with the bono residente canario discount.

To apply for the workers bono residente canario travel discount, you must apply via the arrecifebus website: https://arrecifebus.com/index.php?lang=es and lick on “solicite aqui su Bono Bus” on the left hand menu.

From there, you will be able to insert the necessary details and documentation and you will receive a notification after submitting your details.

If you wish to find out more information you may go to the Lanzarote Cabildo, or call 928 810 100, or send an email to: [email protected].

GGR entrant Kirsten Neuschäfer was first to reach Tapio Lehtinen’s position this morning at 0510 UTC. The South African sailor whisked GGR Veteran and Finnish sailing legend Tapio from his liferaft where he had been since Friday 0700 UTC.

Three boats had been diverted yesterday to assist GGR entrant Tapio Lehtinen after he activated his Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) at 0654. He then activated his Liferaft Personal Locator Beacon at 0854 UTC following the sinking of his yacht Asteria.

Abhilash Tomy (IND) aboard Bayanat, 170 nm SW of Tapio’s last known position, was the first to receive the message sent through the YB3 device and divert his route.

MRCC Cape Town confirmed communication with Captain Naveen Kumar Mehrotra onboard the bulk carrier M.V. Darya Gayatri bound to Singapore, 250 nm NW of Tapio’s position, diverting course at 12,5 knots and rendering assistance with an ETA between 0830 and 1000 UTC on November 19.

Later in the day, Kirsten Neuschäfer aboard Minnehaha, who was the closest to Tapio at 105 miles, contacted the GGR Crisis Team after receiving the message on her YB3. In accordance with the Race Office, she broke the seal of the emergency GPS and diverted her course towards Tapio’s position.

Abhilash Tomy was then released from the rescue to resume racing. As a fellow competitor in the GGR 2018 and friend of Tapio, he kept sailing close while released and asked to be updated on any progress.

The GGR crisis team kept contact with the MRCC Cape Town coordinating the rescue as well as the bulk carrier M.V. Darya Gayatri, Kirsten Neuschäfer and Tapio Lehtinen.

Kirsten was regularly updated on weather information as well as Tapio’s position and drift by the Race Office in order to maximise routing for the fastest route to him. Meanwhile, Tapio was updated on Kirsten’s progress and ETA and showed good spirit throughout the night.

“You can’t get any closer to the ocean, I love it but this is close enough. Thanks for looking after me.” – Tapio Lethinen

More romantic tweets from the liferaft here: twitter. com/ggr2022

Posting speeds above 7 knots, Kirsten was the first on site at 0510 UTC, the conditions at the time were 20 knots of SSE wind, 2 to 3 metre swell and daylight.

It was not an easy task however. Tapio had an early visual on Kirsten’s yacht but she could not see the liferaft in the swell. Kirsten would hear him on the VHF but Tapio could not hear her voice. The GGR Crisis Management Team homed her onto Tapio’s position until they were close enough to see and hear each other to plan for recovery.

Kirsten called the GGR Management team at 0805 UTC to confirm that she had retrieved Tapio from the liferaft onto Minnehaha with a retrieving line. After sharing a good glass of rum, they then proceeded to put Tapio back in the raft, pulled it towards the carrier, which he then successfully boarded via a rescue ladder.

“I’m full of adrenaline now, I’ve been up helming all night, and it’s quite something to be manoeuvring so close to a ship, but we’re all good. He was on board, we drank a rum together and then we sent him on his merry way. No congratulations needed for the rescue, everyone would do the same for another sailor, thank you guys for coordinating it,” said Kirsten.

M.V. Darya Gayatri, contacted by MRRC Cape Town, later confirmed that Tapio has been onboard since 0755 UTC and that they were retrieving the abandoned liferaft. The vessel is bound for Rizhao, China where they will drop off Tapio. MRCC Cape Town is contacting the Finnish Embassy to coordinate his arrival together with the GGR Race Control.

Don McIntyre, GGR Founder, said, “WOW! Bravo to all involved with the successful rescue of Tapio which was a huge effort. It was comforting to feel the support from the GGR family around the world and experience the professionalism and dedication of MRCC South Africa, as well as Capt. Naveen Kumar Mehrotra, and the crew of the M.V. Darya Gayatri who are upholding the greatest traditions of the sea by assisting a fellow mariner in distress.

“Thanks Abhilash for diverting and staying close by, and Kirsten your ocean experience and human spirit sets you apart. Your efforts have written another chapter in life and a special bond with our dear Tapio! Welcome back Tapio…your family is waiting.”
