Moscow, July 7-PRIME. A modern ship is a real spaceship on the water, replete with automation and innovative systems. However, crew members continue to honor centuries-old traditions and are sometimes not alien to superstition.
On Sunday, July 7, Russia celebrates the Day of River and Sea Fleet Workers. When sailors drink sea water, why are there “witches” on board, what does whistling on a ship lead to, why you can’t sit on bollards, and on what day of the week sailors are served herring for breakfast, RIA Novosti was told in the Russian shipping companies Sovcomflot, Fesco and North-Western Shipping Company (part of UCL Holding).
THE SEA LOVES SILENCE
Whistling, walk along the deck like in a movie, only a cruise tourist who is not familiar with sea signs can whistle – sailors are firmly convinced that a whistle calls for a strengthening of the wind up to a storm.
“You should always scold the weather, if someone says that the weather is good – expect a storm in the near future, he himself has repeatedly convinced himself of this,” Nikolai Chvertko, director of the safety and quality department of the Fesco branch in Vladivostok, told RIA Novosti.
It is customary in the Navy to step onto the deck with the right foot, and spitting on it is considered sacrilege. You can’t sit on bollards (a bollard for mooring a ship on which cables are attached) – because symbolically it’s the same as sitting on the boatswain’s head, says Yevgeny Mordukhovich, captain of the Prospekt Gagarin tanker.
Sailors have long believed that in order to appease the spirits of the sea, you need to lay “gifts” – any valuable items – in bulkheads and deckhouse flooring.
HERRING DAY
Culinary customs are among the most revered in the Navy. A sailor’s traditional breakfast on Monday: boiled potatoes with herring.
“During the voyage, sailors work seven days a week, so sometimes you can forget what day of the week it is. And then the galley workers come to the rescue. According to a long-established tradition, on Monday, breakfast is served with jacket potatoes and salted herring, which, to Unfortunately, it is not always possible to purchase in foreign ports,” says Yuri Abramov, the captain of SKF Plymouth.
And on Fesco ships, making dumplings is also a tradition. This is done on Saturday by crew members who are free from duty and work, and the first course on this day is prepared by the chef for milk soup. On weekends, fleet workers on all ships are pampered with sweets – ice cream, sweets and coffee.
CHAMPAGNE!
By the way, since the Merchant Marine is under Prohibition, the only bottle of champagne a ship sees is the one that is smashed against its bow, or rather the stem, during the naming ceremony, or, in a number of companies, before launching from the stocks to the water.
“It’s a bad omen if it doesn’t break. The neck of a broken bottle is kept on board for the whole life of the ship, usually it is placed on the bulkhead in the wardroom along with a photo of the godmother,” says Nikolai Chvertko.
By the way, before the very baptism of the ship, breaking training is often carried out, check with the technical directorate of the North-Western Shipping Company. The bottle is always tied to a rope, otherwise it is difficult to hit the bow of the ship.
“If some of the technical systems on the ship began to behave capriciously, then the responsible person in charge of them should go to the photo of the godmother of the ship and ask her forgiveness,” smiles the captain of the SCF Neva Denis Pugach.
EQUATOR FLAGS AND NEPTUNE’S CHARTER
For first-time travelers to the equator, there are rites of passage in the Navy, with variations depending on the ingenuity of the crew. The day of passage is called the Day of Neptune. “Newcomers are passed through the “purgatory”, in which the “devils” of the experienced ones smear them with fuel oil from head to toe. After that, “Neptune” issues a “Diploma”,” says Chvertko from Fesco.
“An integral part of becoming a sailor is to drink sea water. I remember how experienced sailors, in advance of crossing the equator, instructed those who were in the fleet for the first time to carefully look beyond the horizon line and look for the equator line, fenced with many flags. And as soon as they find , should have reported to the bridge. Of course, there are no flags, milestones and buoys at the equator,” laughs Yevgeny Mordukhovich from Sovcomflot.
When passing a beam of the southern Gogland lighthouse, Russian sailors throw a small coin to Neptune as a tribute for a safe further voyage, especially if the ship is on a long voyage.
And in the sailing fleet, there is a tradition to insert a gold earring into the ear when crossing Cape Horn in South America, RIA Novosti was told in the North-Western Shipping Company.
WITCH, CAT AND DRAGON
Sailors do not recognize traditional signs, for example, in relation to black cats – on the contrary, they consider them animals that bring happiness.
But changing the name of the vessel, entering the name of the port of arrival in the logbook when it has not yet been reached, and prematurely packing the suitcase are considered a bad sign.
“It is not customary to pack things in a suitcase before it became known for sure that your shift is going to the ship. You should not buy vouchers or vacation tickets while you are on the ship,” the captain of the Primorsky Prospekt tanker tells the unspoken rules Alexey Kozlov.
Sailors also have their own special language, in which words common to coastal people acquire a special meaning.
So, a “dragon” on a ship is called a boatswain, a “witch” is a deck mop, “grandfather” is a senior mechanic, a captain is a “master”, a river anchor is called a “cat”, a half-hour period of time is called a “bottle”, and the word ” compass” must be pronounced with an emphasis on the second syllable.

People are so accustomed to communicating with each other through words that in many ways they do not allow the existence of other ways of voice communication. Nevertheless, they exist – we are talking about whistling languages, which are used by some nations for communication at a distance. There are not so many of them left in the world, although they still exist in certain remote regions of our planet.
For the first time, not scientists came across them, but amateurs who were searching for the legendary Atlantis. They searched in the Canary Islands, in particular, on the island of Homer, whose name, by the way, has nothing to do with the ancient Greek poet.
“Gomera is a strange name, and no one knows exactly where it came from. It is known, however, that in the mountains of the Sahara, where the ancestors of the Guanches may have come from, the Gumero tribe lived. One scholar claimed that the people there knew the language of whistling. Maybe this is so, although it seems to me that the wonderful art of whistling words originated in the gorges of Homera, ”the famous traveler Lawrence Green wrote about these places, who systematized the legends surrounding the island of Homer.
In general, whistling languages were used not only by the inhabitants of the Canary Islands, but also by the Indians of Central America, the Nankanse people living in Ghana, the representatives of the Bwaba people living in Ghana and Mali, as well as the Bearn Pyrenean highlanders. Among these peoples, whistling languages are practically not used – their speakers have almost completely died out.
And in 1964, the researchers found out that in the Eastern Pontic Mountains there is a mountain village Kuşköy, whose inhabitants communicate with each other with the help of a whistle.

“Because we are alone all day, we had to learn the language of birds. Our village is not in vain called Kushkei – Bird Village, that means, ”said the local shepherds. Indeed, it is possible to communicate with each other in the absence of a telephone at a distance of about 4 km only with the help of a whistle. Moreover, the whistle in this case is the Turkish language, emulated using sound signals.
“No one remembers when the villagers began to speak the “bird language” to tell each other village news. At least, according to the old people, the whistling language has been passed down from father to son for more than one century and its beginning has been lost somewhere in the centuries. Some local ethnographers think that this kind of “mountain telephone” was invented by the highlanders during military clashes, which are so rich in the history of these places. Others suggest that in the 15th-16th centuries, a large group of Spanish emigrants found themselves in Turkey, fleeing from the Holy Inquisition: they allegedly brought the whistling language from the Iberian Peninsula. It is unlikely that this is the case, others disagree, because the village of Kushkei is inhabited mainly by mountain shepherds, hunters and farmers who speak and whistle in Turkish, and it is unlikely that Spanish emigrants could give rise to a local pastoral population that dates back in these parts almost to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. In a word, as elsewhere where the whistling language is found today, it is surrounded by ambiguities and conjectures,” Gennady Bosov wrote in his book “Silbo Homer and Others”.
In recent years, progress has reached the village of Kushkei, whose residents began to use mobile phones instead of whistling. And if before, in order to call a neighbor to a mess of tea, you had to whistle a little, now many simply call.
The big problem is that the younger generation does not want to learn the old language. And according to tradition, it was passed from the older generation to the younger.
The researchers decided, as they say, to take everything from life and went to study the endangered language in the field. They published the results of their work in a scientific journal Current Biology .
To begin with, some of the scientists – ethnic Turks, who speak the language of their ancestors perfectly – tried to master the language of whistling. With varying success, they learned to understand some phrases in bird language, but did not make much progress.
“The whistling language is very convenient. Look at the terrain, in these mountains and valleys you can only whistle. And thanks to the echo, you can always be heard, ”said lead author of the study, biopsychologist Onur Güntürkün from the Ruhr University.

The scientist, together with his colleagues, managed to find out a lot of interesting things. In particular, the fact that the Turkish whistling language is fundamentally different from all known languages. The fact is that the left hemisphere of the brain is traditionally responsible for language processing. However, when speaking in the “bird language”, both hemispheres are activated, although it is the right hemisphere that is responsible for processing the melodies, frequencies and intensity of the sound that make up the whistle.
When the inhabitants of the village of Kushkei were seated in comfortable chairs and provided with headphones, the real science began.
The researchers alternately played them oral speech or whistles through one of the channels. It turned out that the inhabitants of the whistling village perceived oral speech better on the right side. At the same time, they heard the whistle perfectly in both cases.
“We were able to show that whistling Turkish allowed the hemispheres to work in balance. The left works because the whistling language is still a language. And the right one, because without his participation this language cannot be perceived,” said Onur Gyunturkyun.
The researchers now intend to subject the inhabitants of the village of Kushkay to electroencephalography (EEG) and explain the perception of whistling tongue at a deeper level.
Why does the car suddenly start whistling annoyingly while driving

Any driver, except for a very exalted blonde, reacts extremely nervously to the appearance of any new noises emitted by his car on the go, because this is a clear sign of some kind of malfunction. For example, the car began to whistle – what would that mean?
The question “what is it that whistles in my car?” asked the other day to the author of these lines by a neighbor in the parking lot, at first puzzled me. But you never know what can whistle there! In a further conversation, it turned out that the car emits a whistle only at a certain speed – about 80 km / h. When moving slower and faster, no alarming sounds are heard. The first on the list of “suspects” was the roof rack. Or rather, luggage arcs. It happens that one of the plastic plugs is lost – and the incoming air begins to “sing” in the opened hole. A thorough inspection of the luggage device did not reveal any shortage of plugs, and a test drive showed that the source of the whistle was somewhere in the front of the car.
First, we started sinning on attachment and timing belts. Or on the bearings of the drives of this entire economy. The fact is that bearings wear out over time and begin to make abnormal sounds. The tension of the belts for various reasons can weaken, and they, slipping, are able to “sing”. At idle speed of the engine with the hood up, no criminal sounds coming from the engine could be heard. And no matter how much we tortured the gas pedal in the parking lot, we failed to make the car whistle with the engine. To clear her conscience, the car owner was advised to go to a decent car service, where a professional mechanic will assess the condition of the motor attachment drives. The next day’s visit to the service station did not add clarity to the situation. The units and systems of the engine turned out to be normal from the point of view of specialists.
After that, the focus was on the brakes. Pads, as you know, can also make unpleasant sounds. More often this happens during braking, while the constant whistle of the pads indicates a malfunction. For example, about a wedged brake caliper. Or about a violation of the geometry of the guide pads, about its partial destruction, or something like that. I had to remove the wheels, inspect the brake mechanisms, “move” the caliper cylinders, meticulously examine the friction linings of the pads for integrity, and so on. There were no complaints about the brakes either.
However, swarming around the wheels and bumper still played a positive role. At some point, a deep crack appeared in front of my eyes on the “skirt” of the front bumper of the car, which appeared, according to its owner, after an unsuccessful parking in a concrete fence near the shopping center. Common sense suggested that, in principle, she could also whistle – when the flow of incoming air reached some threshold speed of “sound formation”. It turned out to be easy to test the hypothesis. We sealed the crack with ordinary tape and drove onto the track. The whistle is gone. A few days later it reappeared, of course, when the tape was blown off by the wind. But the main goal was achieved: the car owner now knows for sure that from a technical point of view, her car is in order, and for some time you can put up with a harmless whistle.

Five Reasons Your Hearing Aid Whistles

Hearing aids
Whistling is an unpleasant sound in many ways, but whistling in a hearing aid indicates that something is wrong. There can be many reasons for whistling, but they are all solvable.
Whistling is an unpleasant sound in many ways, but whistling in a hearing aid indicates that something is wrong. There can be many reasons for whistling, but they are all solvable.
Unpleasant sounds, whether it be the creaking of a chair or the loud sounds of a song, make many people wince. For people with hearing loss, a sudden, harsh whistling sound in the hearing aid can be caused by a number of things, even the simplest of activities like hugging a loved one. While some causes of whistling can indicate a problem with your hearing aid and the need for repair, most can often be resolved with a few simple steps.
Excessive amount of wax in the ear canal
The hearing aid works on the principle of transmitting sound into the ear canal. When the passage is blocked, the sound returns to the hearing aid, which leads to whistling. Excessive earwax can lead to blockage of the ear canal. This can cause ear pain, interference with the hearing aid, and even damage to the hearing aid if the cause is not corrected. Have your ears professionally cleaned and check your hearing aid for debris in the receivers or openings.
Hearing aid misuse
Don’t worry, it can happen to anyone. Incorrect placement of the hearing aid on the ear can lead to feedback problems such as whistling. Carefully remove the hearing aid and check that it is in the correct ear (red marking for the right ear, blue marking for the left ear). If this does not solve the problem, try moving the receiver further into the ear (for hearing aids with a remote receiver). Loose fitting of the hearing aid may cause whistling. So make sure you wear your hearing aid correctly.
Unsuitable individual earbuds or sound-conducting tubes
Over time, the ears may change shape slightly, which means that the earbuds used will need to be replaced. Loose fitting of the earbuds causes the sound to skip, causing the hearing aid to whistle. To resolve this problem, contact a hearing care professional to select new earbuds (or make custom ones). Like earbuds, tubes can also fail over time and need to be replaced. The sound tube may dry out or crack, resulting in unpleasant feedback. This problem can be solved by a hearing care professional.
Turning the hearing aid on full volume
Turning the volume up to the maximum possible in the hearing aid can cause sound to be forced back out, causing feedback problems and whistling. In this case, to eliminate the problem, it is enough to reduce the volume in the hearing aid. Avoid raising the volume above a certain limit. If you have difficulty hearing through your hearing aids, see a hearing care professional to help you.
Other causes of whistling
Wearing hats, scarves, etc. may change the feedback path in the hearing aid. This can cause an unpleasant whistle or a series of annoying intermittent beeps and noise. Remove your scarf or hat to avoid this problem. You can also solve this problem by turning down the volume on your hearing aid.
Short beeps or whistling may occur during hugs with loved ones. Just like hats or scarves, the person hugging you can move the hearing aid slightly and the feedback path to the hearing aid will change. Unpleasant side effects are unavoidable with most hearing aids, but they should not significantly affect your experience of using them. If you constantly experience annoying feedback, see a hearing care professional. You may be experiencing one of the above problems with your hearing aid.
Although whistling in a hearing aid can be a major inconvenience, it is usually not a cause for concern. As mentioned above, this sometimes happens and in most cases is easily solved. While replacing parts of a hearing aid or cleaning your ears can be a hassle, it is absolutely necessary to maintain normal, healthy hearing.

Circle of artistic whistling – Katerina Murashova – Children – Site materials – Snob
A woman complained in detail and monotonously about her thirteen-year-old daughter: she fights with her younger sister, she can’t be driven away from the computer, she’ll go to the bathroom and chat for three hours with her girlfriends about all sorts of nonsense … ”The daughter (in pimples, catchy makeup and originally laid curls) sat right there and listened with an expression of habitual boredom on her face.
“Be so kind as to name your daughter’s virtues,” I asked, bored with the girl.
– Advantages? Well… she’s kind, she leaves quickly… not greedy, she always gives everything to her girlfriends, and they take advantage, I told her a hundred times…
— Stop. We’re talking about merit.
— Oh, yes. Yes, I somehow can’t figure it out right away . ..
– You immediately figured out the shortcomings. But to change life for the better, to build something new, worthwhile, can only be based on a resource, on the strengths of a person. I see your daughter for the first time in my life. You’ve been living with her for thirteen years. Her merit?
Puzzled silence.
— Can you add something yourself? I turn to the girl. – What are your strengths?
“I don’t have them,” she grumbles gloomily.
“So,” I sigh. “Then let’s try something different. Let’s take something completely perpendicular to our case. Suppose we have a middle-aged uncle – bald, shaggy, not very smart, and besides, he has been slightly limping since childhood. However, this uncle also has advantages: he loves cats, small children (from 0 to 11, he is already afraid of teenagers) and knows how to whistle artistically, and he can whistle not only any song, but even classics.
The girl chuckled – she obviously liked the turn of the conversation (finally, she seemed to be left behind). The mother looked puzzled.
– And now you and I need to improve the life of this uncle, make it fuller, add colors, events. Suggest.
– What are you talking about? mother asked.
“Let him get the cat,” said the girl.
– Good. Got a cat, I agreed. – He communicates with her, strokes her, feeds her. But still somehow lonely…
— You can walk with her on a leash, I saw… — the girl obviously wanted to offer something else, but then her mother intervened:
– So there are all sorts of clubs, cat shows, let him go there, communicate with like-minded people.
— Excellent! I rejoiced. – Expanded uncle’s circle of contacts. But there are still children and artistic whistling…
“Let him adopt a child,” the girl suggested.
– So they gave him! mother snapped. “Yes, and what will he do with it?” Not! He needs to go to some small house of culture.
– Exactly! exclaimed the daughter. – And there to offer to organize an artistic whistle circle for children.
— Wonderful! So, a circle of artistic whistling. Surely there are a dozen little boys who want to increase their social status due to such a wonderful skill. And who mostly works in small cultural centers and visits clubs for cat lovers?
The girl looked inquiringly, and the mother, of course, caught the ball on the fly:
– Aunts, often alone, often with a child. He is a kind uncle (since he loves children and animals), he is lonely, so they will quickly take him into circulation. And since children are a joy to him, therefore, a woman with a child suits him perfectly, he will immediately love his stepson or stepdaughter. And there, you see, she will give birth to him and their common …
The faces of the mother and daughter became peaceful and equally sympathetic – they clearly liked that the life of the uncle I had invented was frankly getting better.
– Tell me, but during the whole time we arranged for our uncle, did we at least once remember his shortcomings, very, I must say, significant ones? I asked. – About the fact that he is stupid, bald, lame?
“No, not once,” my daughter quickly got her bearings.
“Yes, they only talked about merits,” the mother agreed after thinking and continued, returning to the topic of interest to her. “So what does it mean, I should not pay attention to the fact that she is lying and messing around?”
– No, that means you have to pay very serious attention to your daughter’s resources, make a register, and then use them as fully as possible, trying not to miss anything. Just like we just did with our lame but very handsome uncle.
* * *
From the list they brought me to the next meeting (they made up the whole family, including my aunt, younger sister and two cousins), we chose three items to start with:
- everyone. Regularly, despite the repressions, she cuts something on the head of herself, her sister or her cousins.
- Loves (still!) to play “houses”. Carefully and tastefully composes toy interiors for her sister and her girlfriends.
- Likes to learn something specific that can be immediately put into practice: make a flower out of paper, prepare a beautiful salad, tie a bow.
As a result of our choice, the girl went to the courses of young hairdressers and make-up artists and by the end of the year she made absolutely stunning, creative hairstyles for her friends, herself and her sister, which attracted everyone’s attention. With the support of the course teacher, she held a competition for the best hairstyle in her native school and became famous. Over time, she gained authority among her friends, helping to create an individual style. Relations with her younger sister have improved dramatically (she is now sucking up to the “famous” older one), the computer is used in a targeted way, academic performance has improved from rising self-esteem, and the mother is proud of her eldest daughter and says: “So what if she doesn’t have enough stars from the sky in her studies and in mathematics, not in the tooth with your foot? Not everyone can be Perelman, and thank God! There are also enough ordinary things on earth. And a circle of artistic whistling – it will also come in handy, the main thing is to please yourself and others … “
And I totally agree with her.
How to eliminate the whistle of the alternator belt
Key, ignition switch, engine start … But instead of a pleasant rumbling of the engine – a screech that cuts your ears. Good morning neighbors! If the trip starts with a high-pitched whistle, the culprit should be looked for under the hood. Let’s figure out what can cause the morning “soprano” of the engine, and how to deal with it.
Whistling under the hood is a typical symptom of problems with the drive belts of engine units (generator and other equipment). It is these flexible parts that are usually the source of the unpleasant sound. To understand the possible reasons for their appearance, you need to understand the principle of operation of drive belts (which are also called attachment belts) and their varieties.
Purpose of drive belts
Drive belts are an important element in the operation of vehicle equipment. Their task is to transfer the rotation of the crankshaft to various units: a generator that feeds the on-board network; air conditioning compressor and power steering pump, which create the necessary pressure in the systems; pump (water pump) that circulates antifreeze. All these units are “hung” on the engine housing, hence the alternative name for drive belts – belts of mounted units.
For connecting the crankshaft to each of the nodes and transferring part of the engine power to them, is responsible for the belt drive, consisting of an elastic belt that wraps around the pulleys (round “pancakes” at the ends of the shafts of the units that transmit rotation) and intermediate rollers that maintain the desired tension or define the trajectory of the belt. All elements of the belt drive are connected to each other by friction.
Depending on the design of the engine and the type of belt, the belt drive can transmit power to one or several attachments.
Types of belts.
V-belt and V-ribbed
The V-belt is still found in cars, but is gradually giving way under the hood to more efficient solutions. It can be distinguished by its characteristic trapezoidal cross-sectional shape, similar to a wedge. It was V-belts that appeared at the dawn of the automotive industry, when it was required to connect only one alternator pulley to the crankshaft.
Sometimes the drive belt has a series of transverse ribs on the inside instead of a solid wedge. Such belts, called wedge gear , have greater wear resistance.
Because of its shape and thickness, the V-belt typically only ties two or three pulleys, as it is not well suited for many reverse bends. In addition, a V-belt that is too long does not cope well with power transmission, so several belts are needed for a large number of consuming nodes. Such a scheme is found mainly on old cars, and in modern technology it has been replaced by a different design: a single belt drive with one long V-ribbed belt.
V-belt application: two gears are used with short belt lengths and no strong bends.
The serpentine belt, also known as ribbed due to the characteristic shape of the small narrow ribs, is used in most modern vehicles. Compared to the V-belt, the ribbed belt is thinner, wider and much more flexible, which allows it to transmit power to all units at once: a generator, a pump, an air conditioning compressor, a power steering pump, and others.
V-belt in action: one gear for all attachments, strong bends with many pulleys.
Causes of belt whistle and how to deal with it
Over time, almost all drive belts develop a characteristic disease – the very whistle familiar to many motorists. It is inherent in both V-belts and ribbed belts, although the latter to a lesser extent. However, an unpleasant sound can be caused by different reasons that require different solutions.
If the belt whistles mainly when starting the car in the morning, there is belt slippage . Typically, this is caused by its poor tension. But why does squealing appear only in the morning? A sharp load on the generator when starting the engine makes it difficult to rotate the pulley, and the grease in the bearings that has thickened overnight also contributes. As a result, it is easier for a loose belt to slip on the pulley rather than spin it, which it does with a loud creak. In this case, you need to tighten the alternator belt yourself or contact a car service.
If the whistle is constantly heard and does not disappear after the car warms up, there are more possible causes of the malfunction.
Natural belt wear is the simplest and most easily eliminated cause of squeaking, which is easy to detect: just look under the hood and visually assess the condition of the belt. If there is wear on the working surface, wedge breaks and cracks, cuts and noticeable wear, the solution is obvious – replace the belt with a new one. In no case should a worn belt be used: over time, it will break, which will lead to the failure of all engine components driven by the belt.
Dirt and liquids on belt surface . When visually inspecting the belt, you should pay attention not only to its integrity, but also to its cleanliness. Often, whistling can be caused by drops of technical fluids (engine oil, power steering fluid, antifreeze) spilled during replacement or leaking due to leaks in oil seals and gaskets. Sand particles from driving along the beach and drops of water after forcing deep puddles lead to the same effect. Cleaning and drying the drive belt is enough to eliminate the whistle caused by dirt. Although this is not so easy to do due to the lack of free space under the hood.
Roller bearing wear . In addition to the belt itself, the roller bearings that go around the belt can be the culprit for extraneous sounds. Inside any roller (as well as an air conditioner pulley) there is a bearing that allows it to rotate. Over time, the bearing wears out, causing first a rustle, and then a hum and whistle. An indirect sign of problems with the bearing is an increase in noise with a decrease in air temperature, but the final verdict can only be made by removing the belt and spinning all the rollers idle.
Pulley wear and misalignment. Belt whistle can also be caused by mechanical wear of the pulley, including the development of grooves (and loose belt wedges), or misalignment of the pulleys relative to each other, which leads to belt misalignment. In this case, you need to replace the damaged pulley with a new one.
Correct belt tension
If the squeak is caused by a weak belt tension, you can adjust it yourself. Formally, the degree of tension depends on the specific car model (some manufacturers even indicate the exact values of the force), but in practice it is adjusted by touch, measuring the belt deflection manually. To do this, the point of the belt that is farthest from the pulleys and rollers is pressed with a finger: with the correct tension, the belt should bend by about 10–15 mm.
After adjusting the belt tension, you need to start the engine and listen: the whistle should disappear, and the electrical equipment should work without drops and failures. Otherwise, the adjustment must be repeated.
There are several ways to tension the belt, depending on the design of the adjustment mechanism.
1. Adjusting bow
To check the tension, press on the belt: it should bend about 10-15 mm.
In older cars, the belt is tensioned using the so-called bar, which fastens the generator to the engine and is fixed with a bolt and nut. The procedure is very simple: after loosening the clamping nut, you need to knock out the bar with a hammer or pry bar, changing the position of the generator relative to the engine, and then tighten the nut back.
2. Adjusting bolt
Another old mechanism still found on cars is tensioning with a special bolt. Before adjusting, it is necessary to loosen the fastening of the generator at the lower and upper points, then change its position using the adjusting bolt, while simultaneously controlling the belt tension. Having reached the desired force, you need to tighten the fixing nuts of the generator back.
3. Belt self-tensioning
In most modern machines with a V-ribbed belt, there is no manual adjustment: this function is performed by a special automatic tensioner. According to the principle of operation, they are divided into three groups: damper, based on a compression spring and based on a torsion spring. The latter are most widely used due to their simplicity, reliability of design and compact size. Due to the force of the spring, a constant tension of the drive belt is maintained, and when the force is weakened, you simply need to replace the tensioner with a new one.
How often should the drive belt itself be changed? Each automaker has its own recommendations, usually the replacement interval is 45-60 thousand kilometers. However, checking the condition of belts and pulleys (at least visually) should be carried out regularly: for example, at each change of engine oil.
