Tenerife, Canary Islands – August Weather

What’s the weather like in Tenerife in August

Temperature

Alongside September, August is one of the hottest months of the year for Tenerife, Canary Islands, when clear blue skies, sunshine and high temperatures are almost guaranteed every day. At this time of year, the average temperature for the island is 24⁰C, created by average highs of 28⁰C during the daytime and average lows of 20⁰C during the night.

Temperature and weather can vary quite significantly between the north and south of Tenerife. In the north of the island, such as in Puerto de La Cruz, the weather is generally slightly cooler and cloudier than it is in the south, such as in Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas. This means that if you’re after the highest temperatures and most sunshine hours possible, you’re best off holidaying in Tenerife South in August. However, if you prefer milder temperatures during your summer holidays, consider staying in Tenerife North in August instead.

In August, daily averages increase as the month progresses. During the first ten days, daily averages are constant at 22⁰C. They jump up to 23⁰C for the following week, before fluctuating between 22⁰C and 24⁰C until the end of the month. This makes the final week of August the hottest time to visit Tenerife.

Highs and Lows

The highest temperature ever recorded in Tenerife in August is 44.3⁰C, which was registered at Tenerife South Airport on August 17th 1988. The lowest temperature ever recorded on the island during this month is 1.2⁰C, which was registered on August 22nd 1952 in Izaña.

If you’re not a fan of high temperatures and would rather visit Tenerife when the island is a bit cooler, consider holidaying in June or October, when the average temperature is 21⁰C-22⁰C.

Rain

Tenerife receives hardly any rainfall at all in August, when the probability of precipitation increases as the month develops. In Tenerife North, the chance of rainfall begins at 17% on August 1st and drops down to 15% by August 13th before rising up to 18% by August 31st. In Tenerife South, the likelihood of rainfall begins at 2% on August 1st and climbs up to 5% by August 31st.

Across the month, Tenerife as a whole is subject to an average of 3mm of rainfall, all of which falls on a single day. The most common types of precipitation you can expect to see if you holiday on the island at this time of year are drizzle, light rain and moderate rain.

Highs and Lows

The highest monthly rainfall ever recorded in Tenerife in August is 56.5mm, which was registered at Izaña during August 2005. The 18th of that month was declared the wettest August day ever, when 29.1mm of rainfall fell on a single day. Moreover, the maximum number of wet days Tenerife has ever experienced in August is 18, which was registered at Tenerife North Airport during August 1982.

Average Sunshine Hours

During August, Tenerife enjoys an average of nine hours of daily sunshine, alongside median cloud coverage which increases in the south and decreases in the north as the month progresses. In Tenerife South, cloud coverage begins at 23% on August 1st and steadily rises up to 31% by August 31st. In Tenerife North, cloud coverage begins at 41% on August 1st, drops down to 38% by August 13th and rises up to 40% by August 31st.

Average Sea Temperatures

Thanks to Tenerife’s year-round mild temperatures, the sea is almost always warm enough for swimming in. In August, the average sea temperature for the waters around the island is 23⁰C.

Humidity

The relative humidity for Tenerife in August averages at 68%, ranging between 50% (mildly humid) and 90% (very humid), rarely falling below 20% (dry) or reaching as high as 100% (very humid).

In Tenerife North, the air is driest around August 1st, when the relative humidity drops below 61% (mildly humid) three days out of four, whilst it’s at its most humid around August 11th, when it rises above 88% (very humid) three days out of four. In Tenerife South, the air is driest around August 2nd, when the relative humidity falls below 60% (mildly humid) three days out of four, whilst it’s at its most humid around August 10th when it rises about 78% (humid) three days out of four.

Wind

Over the course of an average August in Tenerife, typical wind speeds range between 1 m/s (light air) and 11 m/s (strong breeze), rarely rising above 13 m/s (strong breeze). The highest average wind speed of 7 m/s (moderate breeze) occurs around August 1st, when the average daily maximum wind speed is 9 m/s (fresh breeze).

The lowest average wind speed of 6 m/s (moderate breeze) happens around August 31st, when the average daily maximum wind speed is 8 m/s (fresh breeze). The strongest wind ever registered in Tenerife in August is 30.3 m/s, which was recorded in Izaña on August 7th 2006.

Weather Hazards

Calimas

Although calimas can occur during any month of the year in Tenerife, they’re particularly bad when they happen during summer especially in August. Whilst cool trade winds normally blow over the island in a north easterly direction, a calima occurs when they blow in directly from the east. When the winds blow in this way, they cross over the Sahara Desert in northern Africa first, picking up hot sand-filled air which they bring over to Tenerife with them. When a calima is underway, temperatures can rise up to 10⁰C hotter than normal and visibility is can be very low.

Whenever a calima affects the island, the Canary Island MET office issues a weather alert. On August 11th 2010, the MET office did just that, when a yellow alert was put in place for the south, east and west of Tenerife until August 31st. During this time, highs of up to 37⁰C were recorded in the shade, alongside intense gusts of wind of up to 21 m/s.

Forest Fires

August 2013 was one of the worst months for calimas in the Canary Islands. During this month, Tenerife and the other islands where affected by so many calimas that forest fires were rife in the mountainous regions. Despite the MET office issuing a warning for everyone to stay clear of at-risk zones from August 14th, August 15th saw multiple forest fires in the Teide National Park which were largely caused by carelessness. Thankfully, these fires were kept under control and put out by a water plane on loan from the Spanish mainland.

Don’t let the possibility of forest fires put you off visiting Tenerife in August. When they occur, they’re always limited to the inland parts of the island which are covered by thick brush that acts as tinder. The resorts around the coastline are always safe and are never affected by fire.

Tenerife Beach for August

Playa la Pinta

If you’re searching for a family-friendly beach, Playa La Pinta might be just what you’re looking for. Situated in Playa de Las Americas, this beach is lined by a short promenade where you’ll find many international restaurants, cafes, cocktail lounges and souvenirs shops, providing you with everything you need for a day at the beach. The golden sands here are peppered with sun loungers and parasols available to hire, plus showers, toilets and a lifeguard service.

The sea is protected by a long rocky breakwater on one side and a harbour on the other, which means it never sees strong waves and is always safe enough for swimming. There is an inflatable play area a few metres off the coast where, for a small price, children can enjoy slides, bridges, climbing walls and other challenges under the supervision of a lifeguard.

El Medano Beach

El Médano beach is the perfect place to practise wind-based water sports. Located within the resort of El Médano, this black sandy beach stretches on for several kilometres, with the westernmost part of the beach being the best place for kitesurfing and windsurfing. The southernmost tip of Tenerife enjoys almost constant winds, which means that no matter when you visit this beach, conditions will almost always be optimal for this kind of sport.

Here, waves can come in from any direction, although wind speeds are generally around the 4 m/s 6 m/s mark, with gusts of around 7 m/s. Waves are usually around 1m tall, but since the sea is almost always occupied by a huge number of local water sport enthusiasts, water sports here are not worth attempting unless you know what you’re doing. The easterly side of El Médano beach is much calmer, making it more suited to swimmers and sunbathers.

Bars and Restaurants

El Taller Seve Diaz

El Taller Seve Diaz, Puerto de la Cruz is highly regarded as being one of, if not the, best place for delicious and authentic Spanish cuisine on the Island. Booking is highly advised due to the restaurant catering up to 30 covers. Excellent and refined dishes, with a modern touch on classic favourites, and welcoming and attentive staff. The tuna tartare is a must try, as well as the roasted suckling pig. Reasonably prices menu, however the ambience and attention to detail makes this restaurant even better than great value for money!

First Love in Playa de Las Americas is a top pick when it comes to Italian cuisine in Tenerife. Located just off Playa de Las Vistas beach, this casual, cosy restaurant offers a small menu of popular Italian dishes, from lasagne and carbonara to chocolate soufflé and tiramisu. All the meals are homemade and the Italian platter to share starter comes highly recommended. There is also a superb wine list, with several local and Italian wines to choose from. What keeps diners coming back for more is the friendly atmosphere which makes you feel like you’re dining in someone’s house, not a restaurant.

The Theatre Cabaret Bar

Head to The Theatre Cabaret Bar in San Eugenio if you’re looking for some lively evening entertainment. This venue hosts a top selection of tribute acts, theatre-style shows and music performances every single evening, including regular karaoke sessions. Live entertainment generally starts about 10pm, but you’ll need to get there for 9pm if you want to make sure you can get a seat. We base the humidity comfort level on the dew point, as it determines whether perspiration will evaporate from the skin, thereby cooling the body. Lower dew points feel drier and higher dew points feel more humid. Unlike temperature, which typically varies significantly between night and day, dew point tends to change more slowly, so while the temperature may drop at night, a muggy day is typically followed by a muggy night.

The chance that a given day will be muggy in Tenerife is rapidly increasing during August, rising from 32% to 45% over the course of the month.

For reference, on August 31, the muggiest day of the year, there are muggy conditions 45% of the time, while on January 14, the least muggy day of the year, there are muggy conditions 0% of the time.

Definitions of the growing season vary throughout the world, but for the purposes of this report, we define it as the longest continuous period of non-freezing temperatures (≥ 32°F) in the year (the calendar year in the Northern Hemisphere, or from July 1 until June 30 in the Southern Hemisphere).

Temperatures in Tenerife are sufficiently warm year round that it is not entirely meaningful to discuss the growing season in these terms. We nevertheless include the chart below as an illustration of the distribution of temperatures experienced throughout the year.

We draw particular cautious attention to our reliance on the MERRA-2 model-based reconstructions for a number of important data series. While having the tremendous advantages of temporal and spatial completeness, these reconstructions: (1) are based on computer models that may have model-based errors, (2) are coarsely sampled on a 50 km grid and are therefore unable to reconstruct the local variations of many microclimates, and (3) have particular difficulty with the weather in some coastal areas, especially small islands.

We further caution that our travel scores are only as good as the data that underpin them, that weather conditions at any given location and time are unpredictable and variable, and that the definition of the scores reflects a particular set of preferences that may not agree with those of any particular reader.

Where does this data come from?

Weather data for Santa Cruz de Tenerife was collected from the MERRA-2 project from NASA, which used a climate model combined with historical data from weather stations around the world to estimate what the conditions were like for every point on the Earth.

For all data based on historical data, we’ve averaged the data from the past 11 years (2010-2020). For example, for the hourly temperature at 10am, we’ve looked at the temperature at 10am on every day in August (e.g., August 1, August 2, etc. in 2010, 2011, etc.) and took the arithmetic mean. We did not smooth the data, so for example, our daily temperature line will have some randomness due to the fact that weather is random in the first place.

heat, Kalima and crowds of Spaniards

Hello, friends!

In this post, we once again explain what August is in Tenerife and why this phenomenon is special. And why, subjectively, it should be avoided.

Yes, of course, August in Tenerife is a hot and warm month, but not the best time to explore the island. Why is that? Let’s figure it out.

Why isn’t August in Tenerife perfect?

A tourist thinks like this: I’m swimming enough, because the hottest month of the year is . You can’t argue, but other guests come with the warm ocean. August in Tenerife is the peak of the tourist season. Europeans, Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, and most importantly, Spaniards from the mainland come to the island.

The former occupy all the places on the beaches in the tourist area, and the latter settle in the northern and wild bays. Moreover, they often stay on overnight beaches in campers and Volkswagen vans, reducing the daily parking capacity. Do not be surprised that already at 9On August mornings, you may not find a free parking space by the beach in Taganana or another wild beach in the north of Tenerife.

How is the weather in Tenerife in August?

Okay, we’ve got the beaches sorted out. Getting ready for Anapa. But can we go hiking? Yes, and other beauty to see on the car, Teide, for example.

The most frequent questions asked by tourists who have chosen August for a holiday in Tenerife are:

  • Where is all the greenery?
  • Why do we burn so much in the sun?
  • Why are there so many people everywhere? Especially on the most beautiful beaches of Tenerife?
  • And what is this haze? Why does ocean and sky merge?

The main answer, albeit ironic, is August in Tenerife =).

Where are all the greens?

August is the hottest and driest month in the Canary Islands. Therefore, in the south we see a gray desert. And even almost everywhere in the north, greenery disappears. It’s good that Tenerife has Anaga, the evergreen forests of Monteverde and Teno. Those tourists who listened to us and went on hikes and walks on the tops of the Anaga mountains thanked the editors of the magazine for saved impressions during their summer holidays =).

Why do we burn so much in the sun?

Tenerife has the hottest sun in August. Therefore, even if you do not see it behind the clouds, it sees you =). You can’t go to the beach without sunscreen with SPF 50. With burns, everyone usually learns from experience. =(
OK, if you are already burned, then buy bepanthen, panthenol or aloe extract in the supermarket at the pharmacy. It will help.

Why are there so many people on beautiful beaches?0074 Well, with this we started this article, but we will repeat =).

In August, in Tenerife, as in all of Spain, the season of holidays and vacations. The Spaniards massively go on vacation in August and it lasts until early to mid-September. Many Spaniards go to the Canary Islands. The best beaches in Tenerife are packed to capacity, and small towns like El Medano are experiencing an unprecedented influx of tourists.
Last year, it was even quieter than usual =).

What is this haze? Why does ocean and sky merge? This is Kalima!

Haze in the air – Kalima. A rare natural phenomenon. But in August it hangs over Tenerife for as long as possible. And this means that the blue ocean is not visible on the horizon, the neighboring islands of La Gomera and Gran Canaria are hiding, many have a headache, and it is difficult to watch the night sky and stars on top of Teide.

We filmed a whole video in which we tell in detail what a kalima is, what it looks like and where to hide from it.

The north of Tenerife saves a little from Kalima, but not always. And there are also a lot of people on the northern beaches now =).

What are we all for? Will be bad? Noooo! But you need to take into account the summer nuances =). The editors of Hiking Tenerife magazine go on hikes in the north and evergreen forests in August, watch the Perseids falling over Tenerife, watch the Lunar Eclipse, conduct astro tours to the Teide volcano, explore the small northern beaches, but most of all have fun at fiestas and swim in the warm ocean =) .

After all, the main thing in the Canary Islands is that there is an ideal activity for every month of the year. And our editors tell you about them in this magazine =).

And then the velvet season awaits us – September in Tenerife. Rock-out fiestas, rain, shooting stars and the approaching hiking season! Summer ends, autumn begins in Tenerife. And it’s magical! =)

What is interesting in Tenerife in August?

As in almost any other month, in August Tenerife will not let you get bored. There are many exciting activities to choose from:

Beach holiday

Tenerife in August is the perfect time for a beach holiday. At this time, the ocean warms up to the maximum possible values, and the weather, as a rule, does not fail.

Active recreation

Tenerife is famous for its great opportunities for outdoor activities. Here you can do both independently and under the guidance of instructors paragliding, windsurfing, climbing, diving and kitesurfing. Anglers can try out exciting sea fishing and perhaps catch their biggest trophy of their lives!

Entertainment and excursions

Young people will find a lot of interesting things for themselves in Tenerife. There is a rich nightlife with discos, restaurants and bars, and the prices for such entertainment are quite affordable. For lovers of excursions, we can offer visits to national natural parks, the Teida volcano, the ancient capital of the island – La Laguna, and much more. For families with children, it would be a great idea to visit one of the many amusement parks on the island, among which we note Loro Park, Aqualand, Eagles Park, Monkey Park, Jardin Botanico, Ostrich Farm. On the video one of the attractions of Siam Park.

Holidays and festivals

In August, Tenerife hosts a number of interesting events and music concerts. One of the most striking is celebrated on August 15 – the feast of the Virgin of Candelaria, in honor of the patroness of the Canary Islands. On this day, a procession solemnly passes through the streets of the city of Candelaria, and scenes from the Gospel are played out on the main square of the city. The holiday ends with folk festivals and fireworks.

What are the prices for holidays in Tenerife in August?

Since there are many resorts in Europe in the summer with great weather, warm seas and low prices, August is not considered high season in Tenerife – it will come in a couple of months. Nevertheless, at the end of summer there are a lot of tourists on the island, this is due to vacations and children’s vacations, because many, in spite of everything, choose the Canary Islands as their vacation spot. Therefore, the prices for tours are still not too high, but higher than, for example, in June and July.
