By Mark Hodson, Sunday Times Travel Writer

Q.  Where is hot in June?

A.
The Mediterranean is the obvious region to visit in June with long sunny days, low humidity and temperatures reaching the high 20s. Further afield, the Caribbean (31ºC) is great value.

June in the Mediterranean offers long days of sunshine and uncrowded resorts. Because the school holidays have yet to begin, airlines and tour operators are struggling to fill beds, and that means cheap offers and late deals. Below, our researchers recommend the best holidays at this time of year.

If you have kids in tow, check out family holidays in June. If you’re travelling alone, see the best solo holidays in June.

  • Bermuda

Average temperature in June: 29ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 9

Best and Worst Rainfall

Aruba has the lowest rainfall of all the destinations in June with only one inch on average, but that is mostly true of Aruba year-round. It is popular during the peak months of the hurricane season because it usually avoids the worst of the weather.

Antigua and St. Maarten weather in June historically also have lower than average rainfall. Many other islands average about four to five inches.

A handful of destinations known for rain forests have even higher amounts of rain. Most of them are Central American countries that are popular with western Caribbean cruises.

Belize and Costa Rica, which are major stops on western Caribbean cruises, have the highest rainfall. Both destinations usually have high rainfall throughout most of the year, which is why they are known for their lush rainforests. The highest amounts of rainfall for these Central American countries are usually inland rather than their cruise ports on the coast.

The title for worst rainfall in June is the Bahamas. Even though Belize and Costa Rica have more, the Bahamas are unusual for getting so much more rain than normal in June compared to other Caribbean islands.

The average number of days that it rains varies widely from one destination to the next. Punta Cana, Montego Bay, San Juan and Aruba all have lower than average days when it rains.

Best and Worst Temperatures

Hot weather hits Aruba, Cancun, Cozumel and the Cayman Islands with average daytime temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 degrees Celsius.

Most other destinations hover in the mid to upper 80s Fahrenheit during the month.

One exception is Costa Rica, which has lower overall temperatures in part because of mountains and rainforests.

Average nighttime temperatures hover in the mid 70s Fahrenheit or about 23 to 25 Celsius. Sea water will be comfortable for swimming.

weather, tours, reviews, where to rest

If you want to go to the tropical island of Sri Lanka in June, then you have chosen one of the best months. Numerous hours of sunshine and rare rains – such is the weather in Sri Lanka in June over most of the island. However, it is worth remembering that on the west coast this month is the rainy season, although there is relatively little rainfall. On the other hand, precipitation allows plants to bloom with new colors and become fresh green. nine0023 In some parts of Sri Lanka it can be quite hot in June, so you should avoid visiting these regions if you do not tolerate the heat.

Weather in Sri Lanka in June

Although the hottest months are behind us, the weather in Sri Lanka in June is still hot. The highest daily temperatures on the island are observed in the north, in the Jaffna region, where the average daily temperature is 33.5 degrees. It’s also hot on the east coast between Tricomalee and Batticaloa, where the average daily temperature is 33.2 degrees. nine0023 As for the weather in June on the southern and western coasts of Sri Lanka, it is not so hot, as the average temperature in the area between Colombo and Galle is 31. 0 ° C. Sometimes there are days with temperatures above 35 degrees, but this is rather the exception rather than the rule. By the way, at night here the temperature drops to 25-27 degrees, but there is no question of any coolness.
If you’re looking for a cool spot in Sri Lanka, you’ll find it in the central highlands south of Kandy, where daytime temperatures are 17.7 degrees. Southwest of Kandy is Sri Lanka’s rainiest region, with 679mm of precipitation. On the southwest coast this month, the amount of precipitation is low (only 87 mm), despite the ongoing rainy season. On the northwest coast, rainfall is rare in June, as the average is only 5mm of rainfall this month. This means that for the whole month only 1-2 times a little rain is possible.
By the way, the east coast south of Trincomalee gets around 10mm of rain in June, so this is another pretty dry region of Sri Lanka this month. nine0003

Where to go to Sri Lanka in June

Where is the best place to relax in Sri Lanka in June? The choice of vacation spot depends mainly on your goals and on some other factors. For example, package tourists most often choose resorts on the west coast, since almost all the hotels where Russian tour operators sell tours are located here. In addition, this area is close to the Colombo airport. However, the best places to stay in Sri Lanka in June, especially for those tourists looking for waves without waves, are the northwest coast in the Kalpitiya region, the north coast in the Jaffna region and the east coast between Trikomalee and Batticaloa. The weather in these areas is very dry, with little or no rain. In addition, the ocean is quite calm, so the conditions for swimming and snorkeling are almost ideal. nine0023 The southwest monsoon will lose its strength in June, so the weather on the west coast this month is not as rainy and windy as in May. However, no cooling occurs, so expect temperatures between 28 and 32°C during the day.
On the east coast of Sri Lanka in June, the peak of the dry season, so the rains here are so rare that no one even prepares for them and does not take into account. It is also important that the air humidity here is very low. True, the temperature during the day can reach 38 ° C, which makes the weather unbearable. Even at night there is no cooling. nine0023 The south coast of Sri Lanka is a good place to stay in June. The weather here is unstable, but there are almost no long rains. Mostly short-term showers fall, the consequences of which disappear within 1-2 hours after their completion. It is worth noting that in most cases the daily temperature in the south is 30-32 ° C, and such heat as in the northeast and east does not happen here. So if you are looking for a less hot region of Sri Lanka for a holiday in June, then we advise you to pay attention to the south and southwest of the island. nine0023 In the cool central highlands of Sri Lanka, daytime temperatures are usually between 17-20°C, but there are often unexpected rains that you need to be prepared for every day.
Where is the best place to go on an excursion in Sri Lanka in June? It seems to me that this month is well suited for exploring the ancient cultural centers of Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura and Sigiriya in the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka. Temperatures during the day here fluctuate between 29 and 33 degrees, so they are well tolerated. At least in April and May, this region is hellishly hot. However, while touring the Cultural Triangle, one should always be prepared for a brief tropical downpour. nine0003

The best beaches in Sri Lanka in June

June is one of the best months of the year for a beach holiday in Sri Lanka. Often travel agencies do not recommend traveling to this island in June, explaining everything by the rainy season. But travel agents have a very general approach to the weather in Sri Lanka, so they often think in a standard way and believe that the rainy season lasts half a year on the island and the holiday season lasts the same. This approach is explained only by the fact that travel agents simply do not understand or do not want to understand the peculiarities of the weather in Sri Lanka. nine0023 The fact is that in June it rarely rains in Sri Lanka, even on the western and southern coasts, where the rainy season really lasts at this time. However, the rains tend to fall in the afternoon as short but intense downpours.
Beaches without waves in Sri Lanka in June can be found almost everywhere. Although on the western and southern coasts, calm water does not happen every day. In the northeast, north and northwest of Sri Lanka in June you will find many beaches without waves. It is here that the best beaches for swimming and snorkeling are located at this time of the year. But still it is worth remembering that on the east coast of Sri Lanka the weather can be unbearably hot. nine0003

What to see in Sri Lanka in June

In June, Sri Lankan Buddhists celebrate Poson Poya. This is a rather inconspicuous holiday compared to other full moon festivals. Temples are decorated, streets and houses shine in the light of countless oil lamps and lanterns. The grandest celebration of this day takes place in the small town of Mihintale, not far from Anuradhapura. Mihintale is considered the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Thousands of pilgrims from all over the country come here to celebrate the holiday with prayers, music and dancing. nine0023 June is an ideal month for visiting the national parks of Sri Lanka due to the relatively low rainfall. At the same time, in previous months, the rains filled the rivers and lakes, and the landscape of the parks became beautiful. June is ideal for animal watching, as many wild animals give birth and care for their young during this time.
But still, I would not recommend visiting nature reserves in the eastern part of Sri Lanka in June, because due to the hot weather, the animals here are not very active during the day. nine0003

Sri Lanka in June: reviews of tourists

Alexander, Krasnodar
Although I thought that the rainy season in Sri Lanka in June, I decided to take a chance and go to this island. Our hotel was in Hikkaduwa. In truth, I was very glad that during the rest there was almost no rain. At the very least, I was expecting a few long showers, but in fact, there were only a couple of short showers in the evening.

Best Things to do in TENERIFE in one week

As the over-popular south coast of Tenerife is the most neglectable part of the island, I’ll show you in this guide which are the best things to do in one week. Picturesque villages, lush fields, bewitched forests, black lava beaches – and on top of this the mighty Mount Teide.

Black lava beaches are just one amazing feature on the island of Tenerife.

Travelling Back In Time

What held me back from travelling to the Canary Islands for literally decades is what holds back Americans from travelling to Cancun or Negril. These places have a horrible stench of mindless or even destructive mass tourism to them. Frying on some beach? I can do that when I’m 90. Right now, I want to enjoy beautiful nature and cherish rich culture.

Oh, in this context, I definitely should reword the term Americans since Mexicans in tourist-tossed Cancun – as all the other Latinos, for that matter – are also Americans. Nevertheless, that’s a different topic we might discuss on another occasion.

A thousand years old tree is one of Tenerife’s most prominent landmarks. There you have it: not a beach, a tree!

So back to the point: So I had basically erased the Canaries from my personal travel map.
And while my prejudices were not completely false, they weren’t right, either. Yes, there are these horrific project-like hotel areas that couldn’t be farther from Canarian life and there is damaging’n’dense mass tourism. But it’s always just a small almost isolated area, basically a mentally enclosed ghetto. This way, it actually doesn’t affect the rest of the islands. And this rest tends to be amazingly rich in history and culture and most of all nature.

To cut a long story short: You’ll find what you look for. And good reasons to visit the Canary Islands are as plentiful and varied as the islands themselves.

Second Chance

However, I had been on shorter, unspectacular trips to Fuerteventura before, and the reason for being extra-hesitant when it came to Tenerife was a very personal one. I didn’t have a very happy childhood, to put it mildly, and Tenerife had been the first place where our family went on a winter vacation by plane, hence, it kept this special spot on the private family globe and became a no-go area in my heart.

Flying was actually such a big deal that they made a souvenir picture of every passenger.

But now I went on this island hopping trip, hence, what the heck, I added Tenerife to the mix.

And what can I say? Coming back with an open mind and a light heart made it possible that Tenerife turned out to be the highlight of my island hopping in the Canaries. Its black lava beaches are so unique, its towns so picturesque, and its lush nature so precious.

I’m so glad I came back!

Microcontinent

Tenerife is the largest one of the Canary Islands and due to its climatic and geographical diversity as well as differentiated flora and fauna, it is defined as a microcontinent since it’s boasting an amazing number of microclimates. For you non-meteorologists: The term microclimate describes a set of atmospheric conditions that are localized in one specific area without in any way affecting neighboring regions. You can be sweating in Tenerife’s capital Santa Cruz while a couple of tram stops away it’s pouring rain in San Cristobal de La Laguna. Therefore, if you are checking the forecast in Tenerife, always inquire about a specific town or beach, never about the island, and even not about a region.

Yes, sometimes this wonderful microclimate phenomenon colors the sky in your pictures in a dark shade of grey like here in San Cristobal de la Laguna.

This phenomenon, by the way, is due to the island’s particular topography. The extremely steep rise from sea level up to the snow-capped top of Mount Teide basically divides the island into very distinctive regions.

Northern Pleasures

In general, the weather in Tenerife’s north is cooler and far more humid than on the south coast where all those holiday resorts are located. This phenomenon makes the north less attractive for beach bums but far more enjoyable for those who appreciate vegetation and natural beauty in abundance.

In Tenerife’s northern part, everything is growing in abundance.

However, due to Tenerife’s excellent system of public transportation, you can experience various microclimate zones in just a couple of hours.

For my week in Tenerife, I chose the northern shores as my base and also explored mainly the north. However, before it was time to leave, I added some lazy beach days on the coast in the southeast which made my Tenerife-experience complete.

Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are an archipelago in the Atlantic, approximately 1000 and 1500 kilometers from mainland Spain and between 100 to 500 kilometers off the coast of Morocco. So while the Canaries belong politically to Spain, they are geographically definitely part of Africa. Also, they belong to Macaronesia, just like the Azores, the Madeira Archipelago, and Cape Verde. And indeed, the resemblance of the scenery is pretty amazing.

The Canaries consist of seven islands with their own regional government. However, there is yet another inhabited island called La Graciosa as well as many small uninhabited rock isles.

Mosaic of the largest Canary Islands. Can you locate and name them all?

The region owes its formation to volcanism and an underlying hotspot. The volcanic activity continues to this day as the people on the island of La Palma sadly had to experience in 2021.

Due to this activity, there is a large number of bubble caves and lava tubes. Therefore, the ancient Canarians lived in natural caves. A large number of natural and manmade caves are still found in Gran Canaria. On those islands where there weren’t any suitable caves, the aborigines built houses from stone, obviously. Interestingly, their styles and sizes differ from island to island.

Roots

Research has proven a connection between the native Canarians and the Berber peoples in North Africa. Examinations have proven large similarities with northern Tunisia and Algeria. The settlers most likely came there while Spain was under Roman sovereignty. The settlement was not a one-time event. In a continuous process, different groups of settlers were brought to the islands. Between 1 BC and 3 AD, there were close economic ties between the Canary Islands and parts of the Roman Empire.

After the Roman Imperial, these relationships diminished and eventually were completely discontinued. Since the inhabitants of the islands had no skills in shipbuilding and no knowledge of navigation, also relations between the islands broke off at this time.

Therefore, cultures on the individual islands developed independently until the arrival of the Spanish conquerors in the 15th century.

There was not a mutual culture among the Guanches on the Canary Islands. As a matter of fact, those lived only here in Tenerife. Nevertheless, for a long time, the cultural differences between the islands were ignored, therefore, some still refer to all Canarians as Guanches.

Tenerife

In 1483, Castilian troops conquered Gran Canaria, the island of La Palma followed in 1492. The following year, Alonso Fernández de Lugo began to organize the conquest of Tenerife. He negotiated with the Court of the Kings of Castile the conditions for the conquest of the last independent Canary Island. Since he was obliged to conquer the island with his own funds, he promised his comrades-in-arms shares of the island’s land and water rights in exchange for their services. Then, colonizers had to settle for at least five years on the island, the plots were planted in the prescribed time and they mainly devoted themselves to the cultivation of the plants.

In the 16th century, the town of Garachico was Tenerife’s busiest commercial place. Therefore, Castillo de San Miguel was built to protect the town against possible attacks from the sea.

Due to exploitation as slaves, killings in the course of military attacks, disease, and the dramatic worsening of their living conditions, the population of the native Canarians had been reduced to about 5% of the initial level. Still, the native Guanches, remained the largest group of the population that formed after the conquest. The other 60 percent consisted of conquerors and settlers from the Castillian mainland and even Portugal. In addition, a large number of Africans were abducted from their motherlands and brought as slaves to the Canary Islands.

20th Century

Although there were no armed conflicts in the Canary Islands during the Spanish Civil War in the 20th century, a large number of supporters of the local government and opponents of the Francoist troops were interned in camps. Many were murdered or disappeared.

After Francisco Franco’s death, the Spanish Parliament passed the first autonomy statute for the Canary Islands in 1982. Today, the Comunidad Autónoma de Canarias is one of the country’s 17 autonomous communities.

Tenerife is a volcanic island and belongs topographically to the African continent. After all, it lies only 288 kilometers off the coast of Morocco but almost 1300 kilometers away from the Spanish peninsula. The island has been a popular holiday destination for decades. This shapes Tenerife’s economy and infrastructure. However, mass tourism is mainly concentrated in the south around Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. In the fertile north, however, agriculture is still an important source of income.

Practical Information

How to Get There And Around

Tenerife Norte

Tenerife has two commercial airports. The first one was opened on a high plateau about 10 kilometers west of the island’s capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the municipality of La Laguna in 1946. Unfortunately, over the decades, there have been several accidents due to its location. Although security measures have been improved, there are significantly fewer international connections.

Going from Fuerteventura to Tenerife.

However, there are connections to various domestic destinations including the other Canary Islands such as Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria operated by local airlines like Binter, Canaryfly, and Air Europa. If you check prices on their websites, don’t get over-excited about the incredibly cheap rates as these apply only to permanent residents. However, even for other passengers, flying between the islands is very reasonably priced and oftentimes cheaper than taking the ferry.

Tenerife Sur Reina Sofia

Far more international tourists proceed through the island’s southern airport Tenerife Sur Reina Sofia which was opened only in 1978. In charter traffic, mainly Spanish, German, British, and Scandinavian destinations are served.

Leaving Tenerife.

In scheduled services, there are also quite a few low-cost airlines such as Eurowings, Iberia Express, and Ryanair serving European destinations as well as the Spanish hubs Madrid and Barcelona.

By Ferry

There are regular ferry services to Tenerife from the other Canaries as well as from Huelva and Cádiz on the Spanish mainland throughout the year. Whereby trips from Huelva are usually faster than those from Cádiz. Nevertheless, the trip takes between 30 and 40 hours – mind you, Spain is very far away, not only geographically speaking.

From the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Olsen Express and Naviera Armas grant regular ferry services to Puerto de las Nieves in Gran Canaria, Morro Jable in Fuerteventura, and Arrecife on Lanzarote. To get to the island of La Gomera, you need to get on board in Los Cristianos.

Fred. Olsen is the most popular ferry company in the Canaries.

Taking the ferry is not necessarily cheaper than going by plane. Yet, it is a more eco-friendly way of travelling. Also, it is the only option if you have to take your car across the sea vehicle.

However, my trip from Gran Canaria to Morro Jable in the south of Fuerteventura took about 2.5 hours, and I paid over 50 €uros, which is by no means a bargain.

If you’re on a flexible schedule, you should check thoroughly the prices at different times of the day as well as between the individual companies as they can differ a lot. Also, just like the airlines, the ferry companies grant residents of the Canary Islands a considerable discount.

Land Transport

If you haven’t booked a package where the travel company arranges the shuttle from the airport or jetty to your hotel, you have different options of how to get to your final destination. The most comfortable option is taking a cab, obviously.

However, you save lots of money by taking one of the public buses.

From Tenerife Norte, bus #30 shuttles travellers to and from Santa Cruz de Tenerife as well as San Cristobal de la Laguna. #20 goes to and from Puerto de la Cruz, and #343 goes south to Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje but also connects the two airports.

If your flight is to or from Tenerife Sur, you can take bus #40 to Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, #111 or #711 to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. #343 goes north to Puerto de la Cruz as well as to Tenerife Norte.

Public bus #342 is cruising the Teide National Park.

As there are many more connections to the different towns around the island, you better check out the website of TITSA, Tenerife’s local bus company.

By the way, just like on the other islands, locals call buses la guagua.

I’m not driving, but if you want to rent a car, you can do so right at the arrival hall. There are different car rental companies to choose from.

Getting Around the Easy Way

So yes, exploring the island by public bus is highly recommended. You spare yourself the terrifying narrow roads in the mountainous hinterland. You don’t need to look for a parking spot in cities like Santa Cruz. It’s comfortable, it’s reliable, it’s cheap – what’s not to like?

Even though bus stops don’t always look like Grand Central Station, Tenerife’s system of public transportation is utterly excellent.

To take the bus, you can always obtain a ticket from the driver. Prices depend on the distance, obviously, and you can pay cash or by a bank card that’s equipped with NFC. You save 10 percent of the single ticket price if you buy a round-trip for the same day.

TITSA, the local bus company, have a great website where you’ll find all the connections and prices and everything you need for an easy trip. There is even a section that’s especially catering to tourists.

Discounts and Deals

Now I’ll introduce some travel passes that are great for frequent travellers. To obtain all these passes, you need to get a ten+ chip card that you then charge. This card costs 2 €uros and you’ll get them at ticket machines and bus stations. Since you also charge them there, this is not such a biggie.

If you plan on travelling to a distant place or various times in one day, a Travel Card for one day might be your best bet. From the first use on it’s valid for 24 hours for unlimited trips in buses and trams all around the island.

If you intend to travel a lot during your stay, you can obtain this Travel Card for seven consecutive days, and then it costs only 50 €uros, hence a bit over 7 €uros per day.

Note that both options are also available in the ten+ App.

If you travel only from time to time, you can charge your ten+ card with an amount of up to 100 €uros and then conveniently pay for all your trips with it. I used to charge mine with 20 €uros. Since the machine on the bus shows you the remaining credit on your card, you’ll always know when a recharge is necessary.

One Last Tip

Since taking the bus is such a great way to get around, many people do so. Therefore, you should make sure to be at the station at least ten to fifteen minutes before departure. Also, you shouldn’t just linger but stand in a queue – or possibly start one.

Immigration and Customs

The Canary Islands are part of the Schengen Area and the customs area of the European Union. Since they are not part of the tax area for excise duties and VAT, certain products are way cheaper than on the mainland. Looking at the gas prices, for instance, will probably make you cry. Also, cigarettes and liqueur are much cheaper and, most importantly, cosmetics and perfumes.

While there are hardly ever personal border controls within the Schengen Area, customs controls when coming from the Canary Islands are still possible. Therefore, make sure to keep your shopping within the allowed limits.

Organized Trips

As I pointed out, there are many many wonderful spots on Tenerife, bewildering and wild, waiting for you to be explored. Basically, all those places can be easily visited by public transport. However, in certain cases, it can still be a good idea to join an organized tour, especially if you have only a limited amount of time.

Next stop: Mount Teide.

For instance, I wanted to see some of the most idyllic villages along the north coast which is absolutely possible by bus. But I also wanted to take a tour to the Mount Teide National Park. At the end of the day, I was very happy to find a tour that included both: I went with them comfortably to all the lovely villages without constantly checking the time and the bus schedule, and eventually, we went to the most alluring spots at the national park before they safely drove me back to my hotel.

Will say, the pure fact that you can visit places self-organized doesn’t necessarily mean that it is the most convenient option. Therefore, when planning your trip, make sure to check out these great tours of Tenerife:

Where to Stay

Tenerife has been a popular tourist destination for decades. Especially on the southern coast around Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas are many huge hotels and apartment complexes.

Nevertheless, you’ll find at least a small choice of lodging options even in the tiniest villages. In each and every hamlet, there will be a smaller guesthouse or privately rented apartments.

Despite its touristy development, Puerto de la Cruz did preserve its original charm of a Canarian fishing village.

I spent almost my entire stay at a hotel on the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz, mainly due to the central location on the northern coast. For the last couple of nights, I moved to El Médano in the southeast – for the beach and the proximity to the airport from where I went home.

However, here is a search box that will help you book places to stay across the island*:

What to Eat

Tapas and Menú del Día

Just like on the Spanish mainland, there is an overwhelming number of bars and restaurants also on the Canary Islands. There, you can enjoy a glass of beer or wine with some tapas, varied hot and cold snacks. They can be slices of serrano ham, diced or grilled cheese, papas bravas, tiny potatoes with a hot sauce, boquerones en vinagre, marinated fresh anchovies – the list is endless

Normally, you’ll get some small complimentary tapas with your drink – at least olives or peanuts. A selection of two or three tapas can actually replace a meal. However, you can also order a ración, hence, a serving, or a media ración, a half-sized serving.

Pulpo a la Gallega with Papas Arrugadas – does it get any more Spanish?

When you are really hungry, the menú del día might do. It’s usually a three-course meal. You can combine it to your liking from different starters, main courses, and dessert options. Often, the price of around 10 €uros includes water or even wine. However, the menú del día is usually just a lunch option and not offered at dinner time.

As in most other European countries, tipping is rather optional in Spain. It is not compulsory, but an appreciative gesture. Also, you don’t need to calculate a certain percentage. Rounding up to the next full €uro might be a bit chintzy. However, adding one or two €uros will normally do.

Bakeries and Delis

There are many small bakeries and delis selling all kinds of sandwiches and empanadas, savory pastry pockets. If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll also find a great variety of delicious pies.

Therefore, if your hotel does not offer any breakfast, just enjoy your morning coffee and a sandwich at one of the many bakeries, rubbing shoulders with the locals.

Markets and Supermarkets

Just like in Italy, many Spanish supermarkets have a food counter. Here you can buy simple dishes like grilled chicken, meatballs, and fritters as well as sides like potatoes and salads.

I’m not claiming that this will be the fanciest meal of your life. Nevertheless, if you just need to grab a filling snack, I find it’s a valid option. Also, it’s a truly Spanish experience since it’s definitely not a touristy dining place.

Most of Spain’s big, often covered farmers’ markets offer far more than just amazing fruits, veggies, cold cuts, and cheeses. They are also counters where you can enjoy a coffee or even a light wine along with a delicious snack.

You definitely should not miss out on this authentic experience.

When to Eat

Now, Spanish mealtimes can be challenging.

Years ago, I visited the Costa de la Luz together with my then 7 years old daughter. We were used to northern European mealtimes and had to find tricks to avoid going hungry. Not only are classic mealtimes much later than expected. In addition, many restaurants close their kitchens’n’doors in-between. For instance, our favorite pizzeria in Conil de la Frontera re-opened only at 10 p. m. By then, we were starved.

To survive, we developed a distinct schedule by making Spanish lunch hours our dinner time. I kid you not. Around 4.30 p. m., shortly before restaurants closed to re-open only late at night, we went for dinners. Admittedly extremely early dinners.

Rubbing shoulders with the locals at a bar.

With this story being told, I need to point out that Conil de la Frontera is mostly frequented by national tourists. Therefore, the restaurants there cater to their needs. Since on the other hand restaurants in Tenerife are often catering to international tourists, you’ll probably find an operating eatery at any time of the day. Unless you are visiting a hamlet hidden all the way back in the hinterland.

By the way, I’ve written an entire post about travelling in the company of kids – especially as a solo parent.

Cash, Cards, and Deals

Since 2001, 19 European countries paying with €uros, and Spain is, obviously, one of them. The exchange rate is 1 US$ = 1.02 EUR (October 2022), but you can check the conversion on this page.

Cash’n’Cards

Especially due to the Covid pandemic, even small businesses prefer that you pay by credit card, and preferably contactless.

Language

Before the Spanish conquest, each Canary Island spoke its own type of the Guanche language. Due to the systematic pushback of the local culture by the Catholic conquerors, only fragments of the language exist to this date. You mostly find those traces in the names of places.

Today, the official language is Spanish, obviously. To learn some basic Spanish or just brush up on your knowledge, there are various apps and online tools. I personally like to practice with babbel. However, due to international tourism, most people working in tourism and gastronomy speak at least some rudimentary English and very often also German.

Nevertheless, here are some ground rules for Spanish pronunciation since saying for instance city names wrong can cause some problems. If people don’t understand where you want to go, they won’t be able to give you directions.

Say It Right

The good news is, that in general, you read Spanish the way it’s written. Although, the letter C is a bit tricky for foreigners. Placed before an A, O, or U, it’s hard and pronounced as K. Followed by E or I, it is pronounced like an English the. Now, if you want that th-sound in combination with A, O, or U, the letter Z comes into the picture. So you have to pronounce Canaria Kanaria, and Plaza Platha.

On the other hand, if you want C to sound hard in combination with E or I, you make it a QU – but you don’t hear the U. Fine example: Tequila, that you pronounce like Tekkila.

This applies also to the letter G. If it’s followed by A, O, U, or a consonant, it’s pronounced like the G in guitar or Gran. To make a G sound hard before an E or an I, they squeeze in a mute U – like in guilt. If G stands before an E or an I, it is rather breathed than pronounced – a bit like the H in house.

The same applies to the letter J. You always pronounce it like the H in house.

The last trap is double L which is not pronounced like an L but like a Y in yellow. So it’s not Pulpo al la Gallega is not Galega, but Gayega. When a word is written with just one L like la, it’s a simple and innocent L.

Connection and Communication

Since June 2017, no roaming charges apply within the EU with a European mobile phone contract. This applies in all 28 countries of the European Union as well as in Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. It pertains to all contracts.

When roaming is not available, you can connect to the internet at basically every museum, eatery, and, of course, hotel.

No matter which company you choose: Using a fairphone is only…fair.

If you insist on being online 24/7, you can get a SIM card. The cheapest one would be Lycamobile while Orange Tu Mundo has the widest coverage.

In Spain, they use plug types C and F. Their voltage is 230 V and the frequency 50 Hz. Whereby, as nowadays all these chargers have integrated adapters, in general, the voltage and frequency don’t really matter.

Weather Forecast for Tenerife from 8 to 14 June |

June 8, 2015

Weather Forecast for 1 to 7 June
It turned out to be not a great week across Tenerife with temperatures dropping, a lot of cloud and some light rain; one of those rare times when people coming from Britain left better weather at home. Although some areas did enjoy sunny periods, it was generally the sort of weather we expect in May, designed to dampen down the island one last time before summer. Maybe it was just a bit late this year.

Weather Forecast for Tenerife 8 to 14 June
In theory it should be a week with plenty of sunshine in most places, but also with cloudy spells during the second half of the week when there could also be light showers. Temperatures start the week warm enough but dip to low 20s for most of the week, a bit on the low side for this time of year. For anyone planning on making the trip to see the La Orotava Corpus Christi flower carpets on Thursday the outlook is for a sunny day.

Weather in South Tenerife –  The week should start sunny and warm, but the second half will see a mix of cloud and sunshine with a 15 to 60% possibility of showers from Thursday onwards. Temperatures start the week at 24C but dip from Tuesday, staying at 20/21C for most of the week.

Weather in North Tenerife –  There should be a similar pattern in the north with mainly sunshine till Thursday. There will be a mix of cloud and sun between Thursday and Thursday when there will also be a 5 to 40% chance of rain. Temperatures start the week at 22C but also dip from Tuesday, staying between 19/21C for the rest of the week.

Weather in East Tenerife –  Monday, Tuesday and Thursday should be sunny; Wednesday and Saturday should see grey clouds with sunny spells whilst Friday and Sunday will be a mix of sun and cloud. There’s a 10 to 35% chance of showers over the weekend. Temperatures start the week at 23C but like everywhere else dip from Tuesday to mirror those of the north.

Weather in South West Tenerife – Looking the best bet for sunshine with hardly a cloud till Friday and then a mix of sun and cloud over the weekend when there will be a 10 to 35% chance of rain. Temperatures should be 25/26C on Monday and Tuesday, then 21/22C for the rest of the week.

Weather in the Mount Teide Crater – Although the sun will shine every day, there could be cloudy spells in Teide National Park from Tuesday onwards with some rain from Thursday onwards. On the summit it will be clear for most of the week with only Thursday morning and Saturday afternoon having cloudy spells. There is a possibility of rain on Saturday. Temperatures should hover between 10 and 12C in the crater and 3 and 5C on the summit of Mount Teide. The biggest problem could be strong winds at the peak from Wednesday to Friday which may affect the cable car.

The Tenerife Weather This Time in 2014
So what happened this time last year? Mainly sunny in the south with cloudy spells and some light rain during the second half of the week in northern and eastern areas. Not that much different to the outlook for the coming week, although temperatures were a bit higher.

Hottest Greek islands in June – Weather info

By Mark Hodson, Sunday Times travel writer

June is a fabulous month to be in the Greek islands. Summer is in full flow with long days of sunshine, but peak season (with its crowds and high prices) has yet to arrive. The sea temperature is starting to get warm, but the humidity isn’t too high. It’s just about perfect.

Which islands are the hottest in June?

Kos

Average temperature in June: 29ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 13
Flying time from UK: 4 hours

The southern island of Kos offers high temperatures in June and lots to see and do around the island. It will feel hot in the sunshine and and even in the evenings it will remain above 20ºC, perfect for a stroll before dinner. In June, there will be hardly any rain and the sea temperature will be around 23ºC.

Holiday recommendation: the luxury all-inclusive IKOS Aria resort is outstanding value. Nearby Rhodes has a similar climate and is home to an excellent Mark Warner beach club.

Crete

Average temperature in June: 28ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 12
Flying time from UK: 4 hours

Crete, the most southerly Greek island, is another sunny destination. With only 20mm of rain forecast for the month, visitors in May will have plenty of chances to sunbathe and visit sites including the palace of Knossos, which will be quieter than later in the season.

Holiday recommendation: i-escape has these boutique hotels and stylish houses for rent. The specialist operator Cachet Travel has a charming selection of hotels and rental properties. Couples should look at Simpson Travel’s small authentic adult-only hotels.

Mykonos

Average temperature in June: 27ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 13
Flying time from UK: 4 hours

Mykonos is a stylish, upmarket, jet-setting little island with some fabulous hotels and busy nightlife. June is a bit more chilled than the high season, so you can enjoy the beauty of the island as well as hanging out at a few beach bars.

Holiday recommendation: one of these Mykonos boutique hotels

Cyprus

Average temperature in June: 29ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 12
Flying time from UK: 5 hours

You can’t fly much further south than Cyprus before you hit the Middle East. This is an island to visit if you want real summer heat in June. Expect long days of sunshine, and an equally warm welcome. It’s a great island to explore by car or excursion and the sea should be a nicely warm 24ºC.

Holiday recommendation: rent one of these villas in Cyprus. If you’re more interested in exploring the countryside, Sunvil has some interesting options including a walking holiday.

Which other islands are worth visiting in

June?

Corfu

Average temperature in June: 28ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 11
Flying time from UK: 3 hours 15 minutes

You might get a few brief rain showers in Corfu but it will feel hot and significantly less busy than in the peak months of July and August. Corfu is all things to all people, from the big budget all-inclusive hotels to the most exclusive clifftop villas in private infinity pools.

Holiday recommendation: CV Villas has some wonderful villas in north-east Corfu with private pools. If you’d rather an all-inclusive hotel, MarBella resorts has two lovely propertes in Corfu that offer excellent value.

Kefalonia

Average temperature in June: 28ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 11
Flying time from UK: 3 hours 30 minutes

With a similar climate to neighbouring Corfu, you might also get some showers in Kefalonia, but that’s more than made up for by the stunning mountains and white-sand beaches.

Holiday recommendation: For self-catering, see this collection of villas in Kefalonia. Nearby on the mainland, Mark Warner has an all-inclusive beach club at Paleros.

Paxos

Average temperature in June: 28ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 11
Flying time from UK: 3 hours 15 minutes (to Corfu, then ferry transfer to Paxos)

Paxos is one of the less commercial Greek islands, brimming with small fishing villages and traditional taverners. Despite being in the north, the sea around Paxos will still be warm enough for a swim at 22°C.

Holiday recommendation: these villas and traditional houses in Paxos are wonderful if you want self-catering. Couples should consider these adult-only hotels.

What about mainland Greece?

Halkidiki

Average temperature in June: 28ºC
Hours of daily sunshine: 11
Flying time from UK: 3 hours 15 minutes (to Thessaloniki airport, then around a 1-hour drive)

Halkidiki is a gorgeous part of the Greek mainland that is relatively undeveloped with many beautiful beach resorts and plenty of historical sites. You’ll get gallons of sunshine and the sea will be around 23°C.

Holiday recommendation: IKOS Olivia and IKOS Oceania are both good-value luxury all-inclusive resorts.

Cruise holidays in Greece in June

Star Clippers operates sailing cruises on traditional tall ships in the Eastern Mediterranean throughout the summer months from April to October. Most itineraries depart from Athens. This is a wonderful way to explore the region, with access to smaller ports that large cruise ships cannot reach.

Hottest islands in the Mediterranean

By Alison Spencer

The islands of the Mediterranean offer long hot summer days, beaches, great food and historic culture. Which which are the hottest? In summer you may crave blistering heat – or want to avoid the hottest islands. In the spring, autumn and maybe even winter you’ll want to find the islands with the warmest temperatures.

Kos, Greece

Average August Temperature: 32ºC
Average January Temperature: 14ºC
Flying time from UK: 4 hours

If you’re looking for the warmest island, Kos is your destination. Summer temperatures can reach up to 35ºC, particularly when the Meltemi, a wind from the north-west, is not blowing. You can also expect little to no rainfall and high levels of humidity, a climate perfect for those seeking heat or interested in spending time at the one of the island’s many beaches. Winter months bring more rain, with January proving the wettest.

Holiday recommendation: the five-star all-inclusive IKOS Aria is very good value.

Corfu, Greece

Average August Temperature: 31ºC
Average January Temperature: 13ºC
Flying time from UK: 4 hours

One of the hottest islands in August and chilliest in January, Corfu sees the largest swing between seasons. Rainier than other Greek Isles, it has high humidity throughout the summer months and temperatures can reach 35, 36 or even 40ºC. Thankfully, a sea breeze can make visiting sites like the Old Fortress more manageable. The sea temperature hovers around 24ºC from July through September, dropping to 15ºC in the winter months.

Holiday recommendation: Traveling with your family? Stay at one of these upmarket villas in Corfu.

Cyprus

Average August Temperature: 30ºC
Average January Temperature: 16ºC
Flying time from UK: 4 hours 45 minutes

A fairly dry island, Cyprus. sees temperatures fluctuate greatly depending on your location. Inland, around the Mesaoria Plain and the capital of Nicosia, temperatures can exceed 40ºC. Along the coast, towns like Larnaca can reach 32ºC. But you can follow your explorations of Tombs of the Kings or Kato Paphos Archaeological Park with a dip in the comfortably warm sea. Perhaps consider a January getaway, as Cyprus is the hottest Mediterranean island during winter.

Holiday recommendation: Stay cool by renting one of these lovely villas with private pools. In the winter months, try one of these fly-drive holidays or a self-guided walking holiday.

Gozo

Average August Temperature: 30ºC
Average January Temperature: 15ºC
Flying time from UK: 3 hour flight, 40 minute drive, 25 minute ferry

Less rain means more sunshine on the island of Gozo, which enjoys more than 300 days of sun a year. With only one month of high humidity and sea temperatures of 26ºC, you can spend all day enjoying the island’s outdoor activities, whether relaxing at Ramla Bay or exploring the Citadel. Even when hot, the north-westerly Majjistral and the northerly Tramontana are the two winds that bring welcome freshness.

Holiday recommendation: Take advantage of the beautiful weather with a cycling tour.

Malta

Average August Temperature: 30ºC
Average January Temperature: 15ºC
Flying time from UK: 3 hours

Summer in Malta means high humidity and temperatures that can, at times, reach 31ºC. The sea will be a very pleasant 25ºC. Autumn and spring in Malta are warmer than most other Mediterranean islands thanks to the Sirocco winds, which originate in the Sahara Desert. While it might bring dust or sand, it also creates a long season for basking in the sun.

Holiday recommendation: Despite being small in size, Malta offers visitors plenty of wonderful hotels. See the latest offers.

Sardinia, Italy

Average August Temperature: 29ºC
Average January Temperature: 14ºC
Flying time from UK: 2 hours 45 minutes

Sardinia is very busy in August with Italian tourists, but far more relaxing and uncrowded across the rest of spring and summer. Humidity rarely reaches uncomfortable levels, even in summer and due to the Maestrale, a northwest wind, the island is breezier than others. When originating in Africa, these winds can lead to temperatures surpassing 40ºC inland. Sea temperatures are around 23ºC – not the hottest in the Med – dropping to 13ºC in February.

Holiday recommendation: Sardinia has some of the Mediterranean’s best beaches, so be sure to stay beside the sea.

Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Ibiza)

Average August Temperature: 29ºC
Average January Temperature: 14ºC
Flying time from UK: 2 hours 15 minutes

The islands of Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza, while warm, won’t often pass 30ºC, even in peak summer months. Humidity remains moderate throughout the season and, while seeing only a handful of cloudy days, you’re likely to find a bit more rain. Sea temperatures remain around 25ºC throughout summer, dropping to 14ºC in late winter/early spring. Due to its proximity to the continent, Mallorca experiences a bit more wind and will also feel a bit colder in winter and warmer in summer.

Holiday recommendation: Oliver’s Travels offers visitors more than 200 villas in Mallorca. i-escape.com has some great accommodation in Ibiza while Vintage Travel has the best villas in Menorca.

Crete, Greece

Average August Temperature: 28ºC
Average January Temperature: 14ºC
Flying time from UK: 3 hours 45 minutes

Despite an August average of 28ºC, during heat waves, Crete can see temperatures reach 35ºC on the coast and 40ºC inland. The Meltemi winds, which blow from May through September do make these waves more bearable however. The southern coast is more sheltered and likely to feel hotter. Sea temperatures will reach 25ºC in August and very little rain falls during the summer.

Holiday recommendation: Enjoy the diverse Cretian activities, from wandering olive groves to hiking snow capped mountains, from the comfort of a beautiful villa.

Sicily, Italy

Average August Temperature: 28ºC
Average January Temperature: 13ºC
Flying time from UK: 2 hours 45 minutes

If you’re looking for hot sun and warm seas, Sicily offers both, with sea temperatures reaching 27ºC in summer. Also subject to the Sirocco, hot winds from Africa, Sicily’s temperatures can top 20ºC in winter and 40ºC in summer, even in the coastal towns of Palermo, Messina and Catania. These months also bring sunshine and high humidity, which tapers off into autumn.

Holiday recommendation: Check out these gorgeous places to stay from a working olive farm to these chic apartments.

June, July, August – 2022

How, when and where is it better to relax in Greece in the summer of 2022? An overview of the weather in June, July and August, as well as tips and reviews from tourists, what is the best thing to do in each of the months.

The climate in Greece is Mediterranean subtropical with warm rainy winters and dry hot summers. In the north of the country and in its central part, it is usually somewhat cooler than in the south and the islands. Weather in Greece in June

The first month of summer is characterized by soft, comfortable warmth. The weather in Greece in June pleases with an abundance of sunny days and pleasant temperatures: during the day +27…+30°С, the water in the sea warms up to +22…+23°С. According to reviews, the end of May and the beginning of June are great for relaxing with kids, the elderly also feel good.

The warmest is in Thessaloniki and on the island of Kos: +29°С average temperature during the day, slightly below +28°С in Crete, Corfu and Rhodes, even cooler in the resorts of Halkidiki and Santorini islands – about +27°С. At night +18…+20°С.

Things to do

At this time it is good to bask on the beach, go diving and kiteboarding, go out to the open sea on a yacht or boat. The steady wind blowing in the direction of the Aegean Islands provides an excellent opportunity for windsurfing and sailing.

Ancient Greek temples, acropolises and Orthodox monasteries are also best visited in early summer. Judging by the reviews of tourists, although the sun is hot, the weather in Greece in June is quite tolerable even for long trips. Taking into account the elongation of the mainland of the country and the peculiarities of the geographical location of the islands, it is worth taking a light jacket on a trip, because the weather may differ. It all depends on the chosen route.

Athens, Peloponnese, Crete, Rhodes, Santorini, Zakynthos and Corfu occupy leading positions in excursion destinations. Tourists are advised to see the Acropolis of Athens, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Mount Olympus, the Valley of the Butterflies, the Palace of Knossos, the Blue Caves, Orthodox churches and monasteries.

In June, Crete hosts the Festival of Culture, and sports competitions on the Peloponnese peninsula. The Hellenic Festival in Athens lasts all summer and ends in September. At this time, theater groups from other countries come and stage performances on the stage of ancient amphitheaters. Vivid performances on the hill of the Acropolis gather thousands of fans every year.

On June 23, Greece celebrates the summer solstice. On the night of June 23-24, the Greeks burn flowers at the stake, plucked back in May, to get rid of the unclean.

Weather in Greece in July

It gets hotter in July, especially in the central part Greece, where indicators of +40 … + 45 ° С are often observed, there can be strong gusty winds. Water warms up to +26°C. Average daily temperatures on the islands of Kos and Corfu are +31…+33°С, on Crete, Rhodes and Chalkidiki +30°С. At night +22…+25°С.

The weather in Greece from mid-July to mid-August is no longer happy: the hottest period begins, and many Greeks go to the northern part of the country, although the air there also heats up to +35°C.

Where is the best place to relax in Greece in July 2022? According to reviews, this time is not bad in Rhodes: fresh winds blow from the northeast, which makes the climate seem milder. The Chalkidiki peninsula is well protected by mountains, there is no rain, the air temperature does not exceed +35°С, the sea +26°С. There can be occasional rain in Corfu and the heat seems to be weaker than in other resorts.

Things to do

The sun is merciless, and most vacationers spend time by the sea: swimming, sunbathing, water sports, scuba diving. The daytime sun is dangerous with sunburn and heat stroke, so after 11 o’clock the beaches are slowly emptying, taverns and shops are closed.

It is better to calmly wait out the midday heat in a cool place until 17 o’clock, gathering strength for evening swimming and entertainment. By 7 pm, the heat subsides, and you can have a great rest, because wine festivals, fairs and various musical events often take place in July.

Weather in Greece in August

30…+35°C and above, at night +25…+26°C. But the heat is much easier to bear due to the action of the monsoons, which bring freshness and coolness.

It is better to choose Peloponnese and Halkidiki for holidays. The difference in temperature is small, only 1-2 degrees, but it feels much more pleasant. Surfers go to Crete and other Mediterranean resorts.

Things to do

The August heat does not encourage excursions, so vacationers spend morning and evening hours by the sea, go yachting, go diving, have fun in water parks.

In August, many Greek cities host major cultural events – music and dance festivals, folklore shows, and the religious feast of the Assumption of the Virgin.

Fans of cultural leisure visit local temples and museums, small souvenir shops. The nights are warm, and in the evening many go to taverns where you can enjoy Greek cuisine from the heart and listen to music.

    Greece in June by resorts

On the mainland and islands, where the main resorts of Greece are located, the weather is slightly different from the average throughout the country.

The climate of Greece is heterogeneous and has its own characteristics. The country is located in different climatic zones. The mainland in June is characterized by hotter weather, in mountainous areas it is cool at night. The Mediterranean climate in Greece with warm dry air, no precipitation is typical for the islands and the coast. At the beginning of the month it is better to book a tour to Rethymno, Chersonese, where sunny days prevail, the beach season begins earlier. In the first half of June, hot weather sets in in Thessaloniki, the daytime temperature rises to 28-30 °C. It is warm at this time in the southern resorts in Corinth, Loutraki, Athens.

June is considered the month of rest for children. Kids will not get tired of the heat and have a good rest. With children, it is better to go to Lindos, Tolo or Faliraki, where the sea is shallow near the coast, there are fewer waves, there are no rainy days, the water heats up to 24 ° C. By the end of June, all the resorts of Greece have hot, cloudless weather, the water temperature rises to 24-25 ° C, and the amount of precipitation is negligible. Crete

The first month of summer in Crete is dry and warm. The chance of precipitation is minimal. Only one rainy day is possible in early June. The heat comes here gradually. But if at first the temperature during the day reaches only 25 – 28 ° C, then by the end of the month it can rise above +30 ° C. In coastal resorts, the temperature may differ by several degrees from these indicators. Therefore, if you are going not only to bask on the beach, but also to see the sights of Crete in June, it is better to purchase a tour for its first half.

It is believed that the island has the cleanest beaches, an advanced tourist industry, and many quiet coves. The weather in Crete in June is stable throughout the month. The sea at the beginning of June is quite cool. Water warms up to only +20 °С, but by the end this figure already reaches +24 °С.

Near some beaches of Kos there are underwater cold currents, which you should beware of. Here now, as on many other Greek islands, quite strong winds are blowing. But they do not interfere with rest, but rather bring a pleasant coolness.

    Rhodes Island

The weather in Rhodes in June is wonderful. The island attracts its guests with ideal conditions. Even a strong wind sometimes blowing does not interfere with a comfortable stay. The beaches at this time of the year are only visited by tourists, and they are not too crowded. The local population considers the sea to be still cold for swimming. But for residents of more northern Russia, the water temperature of +23 ° C seems quite suitable.

The maximum daytime temperature in 2019 was +31 °C and lasted only a few days. And the lowest air temperature recorded in Rhodes in the same year at night was +20 ° С.

On the east coast, the air temperature rises from 25°C at the beginning of the month to 30-32°C at the end. In the first week of June, the water is cool – about 22°C, but every day the sea heats up, by the end of the month the water temperature rises to 25-26°C. On the coast from the Aegean Sea it is a little cooler, the wind blows. The weather in Rhodes in June pleases with the absence of rain and clouds.

    Maximum temperature:

    • during the day – 33°C.

In June, WaterPark, karting centers, diving centers are opened on the island. Those who like to relax to the fullest should stop in the cities of Lindos, Rhodes, Faliraki, where the clubs work most of the day.

    Halkidiki

Halkidiki has a special climate – between the climate of northern Greece and its southern resorts. Rainfall here is more evenly distributed between winter and summer, and the holiday season is a bit shorter.

Although the weather is already summer in Chalkidiki in June, the sea is still cool at the beginning of the month. At this time, it is better to purchase a tour to resorts located in bays and bays, for example, to Vourvourou hotels. But the air already in the first decade of June during the day can warm up to +27 ° С. But even at the end of the month, the daily maximum temperature rarely exceeds +31 °C.

High season begins on the peninsula. The first days of June, the sea is a little invigorating, at the end of the month the water becomes more comfortable – 24. 5 ° C. In bays it can heat up to 26°C. Daytime heat of 26-28°C can be replaced by a mercury column jump up to 35°C. Evenings are warm, in the pre-dawn time it gets cold to 18°C. Rain disturbs vacationers 3-4 times a month.

    Maximum temperature:

    • during the day – 35°C.
    • at night – 22°C.
    • water – 25.2 °C.

    Minimum temperature:

    • during the day – 22°C.
    • at night – 17.5 °C.
    • water – 20.9 ° C.

According to forecasts, the weather in Halkidiki in June next year is expected to be warmer, at the level of 24-29 °C.

    Athens in June

June is the best time to visit the Greek capital. It is warmer here than in other Greek resorts. In the daytime, the air heats up to 27-32°С, at night it cools down to 20-21°С. Insignificant precipitation does not violate the plans of vacationers. The pleasant warmth of the sea, around 24°C, contributes to the influx of tourists and rising prices. The tour can be booked today to save.

    Maximum temperature:

    • during the day – 36°C.
    • at night – 22°C.
    • water – 26 °C.

    Minimum temperature:

    • during the day – 23°C.

    Weather in Corfu in June

June in Corfu is not yet considered a high season, although conditions are quite suitable for tourists from Russia. During the day it is about +25 °С or slightly higher, and the minimum temperature at night is not lower than +19°C. The water is cold in early June. Its temperature is only +21 °C. But in small bays it is noticeably warmer, and it is already pleasant to swim in it.

Rainfall in Corfu in June is minimal, only about 15 mm. And rainy days are rare. But the duration of daylight reaches 15 hours. And this is enough not only to visit the beach, but also for interesting excursions around the island.

The coolness of the first days of June (about 22°C) gives way to comfortable warmth – 26-28°C. Temperature at night — 18-19°C, but the sea does not cool down and from the first days the water is pleasant for swimming. The chance of precipitation is unlikely, the weather in Corfu is cloudless all month long. To understand what clothes to take, you can look at the average data for several years.

    Maximum temperature:

    • during the day – 32°C.
    • at night – 22°C.
    • water – 25 °C.

    Minimum temperature:

    • during the day – 22°C.
    • at night – 16.5 °C.
    • water – 20 °C.

Tourists who are tired of a beach holiday can have fun in the water park, see the ancient Kekira, Achillion Palace.

    Zakynthos in June

It is very warm in Zakynthos in June, and even already hot. True, in the first days of June, it can be quite cool at night. But still, the minimum temperature at night is never less than +16 °C. But then it gets warmer every day, and at the end of the month it can even reach +25 °C at night. Daytime temperatures also rise, but rarely rise above +31°C. And with a cool sea breeze, the heat is much easier to bear.

Zakynthos in June pleases with the lack of rain. For a month they fall out about 10 mm. But the Ionian Sea is not too warm in early June. Its temperature is only 19-20 °C. But by the end of the month it warms up to 24-25 °C.

The climate of the island is characterized by the absence of temperature differences. Comfortable 27-28°С are established from the second decade of June. There is no heat that makes you leave the beach or look for coolness. During this month the sky is cloudless, usually there is no precipitation. In early June, the water is a little cool, in the second half it heats up to 24 ° C.

    Maximum temperature:

    • during the day – 31°C.
    • at night – 22.5°C.
    • water – 24.5 °C.

    Minimum temperature:

    • during the day – 22°C.
    • at night – 18 °C.
    • water – 20.5 °C.

Cool weather on Zankif in June is conducive to a trip to Turtle Island, in the Askos nature reserve.

    Peloponnese

During the first days of summer, the weather in the Peloponnese is unstable. The temperature may deviate by 3-4 °C. But the average daily temperature on the peninsula is not lower than +24 °C and higher than +28 °C. Sea water, as in other resort areas of the country, is rather cool at the beginning of the month, about +20 °C.

Going to the Peloponnese in June with children, it is better to buy a tour to Messinia or Laconia on the west coast. Their sandy beaches are characterized by shallow water, and the water warms up faster. But at the end of June, the real heat comes here. Peloponnese resorts are considered to be among the hottest in Greece.

    Entertainment

In addition to the beach, tourists, especially those with children, can please themselves with visits to water parks or amusement parks, which operate at full capacity from the very first days of summer. The largest water parks are on the islands of Rhodes and Kos. Good water parks are also near the major cities of Crete, Corfu and Zakynthos.

And the largest amusement park is located in the capital of Greece. But Athens in June is too hot. Therefore, it is better to go to the Magic Park of Thessaloniki or to the amusement park in Rhodes.

    Excursion program

Almost every region of Greece has its own attractions. And June is the most suitable summer month for their inspection. Crete is home to the Palace of Knossos and the Dictean Cave. On Zakynthos there is the underground lake Melisani and the cave of Drogarati, on Corfu there is the Achillion Palace, on Kos there is the fortress of the Knights of St. John, and on Rhodes you can go to the palace of the Grand Masters.

Tickets for excursions can be purchased for all interesting places. And for adventures, you can go to a dormant volcano located on the island of Nisyros.

    Holidays, events and festivals

Greece in June pleases its guests with holidays and festivals. This month, the famous Hellenic Festival starts in Athens, lasting until September. On the hills of the Acropolis and Lycabettus, in the open ancient theaters and ancient ruins, dramatic and musical performances are held. The summer Symi festival is of the same duration. These are also successive concerts and performances, starting in early summer.

And at the end of June in the Peloponnese in the city of Nafplion, an international festival of classics takes place. There is another interesting holiday this month. From June 23 to June 24, midsummer night is celebrated, timed to coincide with the birth of John the Baptist. In the bonfires that night they burn what is left of the flowers plucked in May. Even now it is believed that it drives away all evil forces.

    Shopping

There are usually no sales in stores in June, but it is quite profitable to buy some goods in summer. First of all, this applies to fur products. They seem to be out of season, and the price tag is the same as in winter, but sellers are willing to bargain and can decently reduce the price. It is best to buy fur coats in shops at factories. But they are located in cities and are far from the resorts.

Leather products from their own Greek brands are also popular with tourists. They are not expensive in price and are of good quality.

    Holiday prices

Due to the fact that June is not considered the “high” season in the country, prices for services are slightly lower than in July and August. This also applies to the cost of tickets for various excursions. But for air tickets, the price is almost the same all summer.

The price of ready-made tours is slightly higher than in May, but it is still lower than in July. This difference is especially noticeable for short-term and two-week tours. But for hotels, June and July prices are comparable. Only in Athens in June the cost of rooms rises sharply, and in July it falls.

    Recommendations for families with children

Families with children should purchase a tour for June. The Mediterranean climate of the country allows us to predict that at this time there will not be too much heat, and the kids will calmly endure this trip. It is better to choose seaside resorts, where the heat is more easily tolerated, thanks to the sea breezes.

Be sure to wear hats and sunscreen. After all, even despite the relatively cool air, children can easily get burns or sunstroke. In the early days, you need to allow the child to acclimatize, not to give excessive loads, feed him food familiar to him and drink more.

    Conclusions

The climate in Greece is Mediterranean. Therefore, the winters here are warm, and the summers are hot and almost without precipitation. June, according to all forecasts, is the most comfortable and not hot month of summer. There are already a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, and plants delight with their juicy green attire. At the same time, the water temperature in the sea is quite suitable even for bathing children.

Climate tech topping the European investment agenda

As the European Investment Fund commits €250 million with five equity funds to mobilize €2.5 billion of climate action and environmental sustainability investment across Europe, early-stage investment firm Antler VC has revealed a record year of climate investment. Climate tech is now firmly on the European investment agenda.

The omnipresent climate crisis continues to loom over us and every single day we are hearing about more dire consequences and implications that are affecting people each second. From extreme weather patterns which impact lives and businesses to fuel and food shortages, people and habitats are already suffering.

As the world’s population tops 8 billion, we have to face the facts (facts which we should have faced a long time ago) – our society isn’t sustainable. The way our economy operates and society functions contribute to this climate catastrophe and we have almost run out of time to stop the worst effects. An urgent change in how we fuel our homes and cars, how we eat and produce food and how we generally approach life needs to be taken.

It’s very easy to say ‘let’s take action’, though, and a much different thing to actually do it. As global leaders met this month for COP27 and discussed how to work together to tackle this ballooning problem and protect our planet, innovators across Europe have been hustling and developing tech-based solutions that might just be the key.

    European VC prioritizing climate tech

In this context, Europe’s VC and startup community have been working collaboratively to bring about innovative and promising solutions – and recent reports are showing record-breaking commitments to climate innovation.

EIF to support €2.5 billion of climate action investment

On the back of COP27, Europe has clearly placed climate tech at top of the priority list, and it seems that money is being put on the table. What we want to know, is how and where this money will be spent.

The EIF has committed €250 million with five equity funds to mobilize €2.5 billion of climate action and environmental sustainability investment across Europe. It’s going to the following funds:

    • €28 million to the Growth Blue Fund I, a private equity fund focusing on the blue economy, and sustainable economic activities relating to the oceans. It will mainly invest in Portuguese small and medium companies across all sectors.
    • €30 million to PureTerra Ventures, a water technology early growth fund, which invests in small and medium enterprises across the European Union scaling game-changing technologies to radically alter the usage, conservation and treatment of water. PureTerra is the first-of-its-kind specialist water-focused fund in Europe and the first water-focused investment in the EIF’s venture capital portfolio.
    • €39 million to the Zintinus Fund I, a venture capital fund focused on growth-stage investments in sustainable food innovation across Europe, in particular alternative proteins, functional food, clean nutrition and food waste reduction.
    • €75 million to the SUMA Capital Climate Impact Fund III, an infrastructure fund targeting greenfield energy transition and circular economy projects predominantly in Spain.
    • €75 million to the Eiffel Transition Infrastructure Fund, an innovative fund designed to provide equity bridge financing for renewable energy infrastructure assets in Europe.

It’s certainly a strong signal of support supporting climate tech innovation and promising developments that can make a real difference to our planet and society. Freeing up such extensive amounts of capital to visionary entrepreneurs is a positive step forward, and the approach of disseminating amongst various climate-focused VC funds is a promising way to encourage growth of the wider ecosystem and ensure the money is managed and spent correctly. We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on the funds going forward.

EIF Chief Investment Officer Alessandro Tappi said: “Contributing to the European Union’s green transition agenda is a top priority for the EIF and the EIB Group. This has become even more important and urgent given the current energy crisis. We are therefore very happy to invest in five equity funds that will make a crucial contribution to the energy transition in a variety of sectors, from water to food and infrastructure. Signing these commitments at COP27 sends a strong market signal that investing in green business models and technologies is possible and vital to our common future.

Record levels of VC invested in climate tech

Aside from this, there are also private VC firms getting involved in climate action – and it’s been a record-breaking year.

Antler VC: Supporting a new generation of climate entrepreneurship

Antler VC was launched with a vision to support sustainable businesses that solve meaningful problems, drive innovation, and improve lives. It’s just revealed that 2022 has been a record year in terms of its investment into European climate tech and sustainable startups.

Throughout the year, the firm invested in 17 European startups developing tech or products to improve sustainability and address climate change. This is the equivalent to an investment into a climate-related startup every 2.5 weeks throughout the year – making 2022 the first year when Antler has backed climate tech startups more than any other sector.

While climate tech innovation and investment is growing across the entire continent, the Nordics are firmly leading the way – quickly establishing itself as a global hotspot for this space. Antler’s conveniently located offices in Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen are helping nurture this ecosystem.

Michael Wiatr, Partner at Antler, said: “Antler has already made a record number of investments into climate tech and sustainable startups across Europe this year – reflecting the rise of a new generation of climate tech founders across the continent. Nowhere is this more pronounced than in the Nordics, which are emerging as a global capital for climate innovation.”

This trend reflects the extent to which the world’s best talent is gravitating towards climate tech and sustainable innovation. Amidst the global context of energy shortages, extreme weather conditions and food shortages, many of the founders supported by Antler have swapped highly successful careers in finance, consulting or within tech unicorns to pursue entrepreneurial ambitions that allow them to prioritize addressing climate change.

Anne Tutar, Partner at Antler, comments: ”We are seeing an unprecedented influx of highly skilled entrepreneurs and inventors dedicating themselves to innovations that will make a difference in the fight against climate change. With demand increasing from consumers and businesses for sustainability, there has never been a better time to become a climate tech founder and create a startup that is directly addressing climate change.”

The portfolio includes startups using space-enabled tech to track carbon (e.g AIRMO), air cooling towers to remove CO2 from the atmosphere (NeoCarbon), and energy companies producing hydrogen electricity (Hydrologiq & HYMETH) or battery storage (Evyon & Geniess). In addition, it has backed startups that are pursuing carbon neutrality – including reusable home cleaning products (Homethings), carbon-neutral beauty and nail products (ARKIVE & Glaize) and sustainable fashion marketplaces (Spun & Sustie).

Climentum Capital: Putting transparency into climate investments

One of the stand out problems with the climate tech space is greenwashing and the prevalence of buzzwords.

It seems that almost every business is ‘sustainable’ and ‘going green’ these days. But how do you actually monitor and check that? There are a range of platforms, and startups, coming up with ways of accurately tracking data around carbon emissions and environmental impact, but greenwashing and false claims and empty promises are still a norm rather than an exception.

Climentum Capital launched a climate tech fund this summer, armed with €150 million. Operating out of the hubs of Copenhagen, Berlin and Stockholm, the fund has put a mass reduction in carbon at the centre of its focus, prioritizing investment sin, NextGen Renewables; Food and agritech; Industry and Manufacturing; Buildings and Architecture; Waste and Materials.

The firm, alongside the capital, introduces the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) to improve transparency in the market for sustainability investing, aiming to prevent greenwashing. As part of the due diligence process, each investment is subject to a scientific climate impact assessment and once onboarded, each venture is closely monitored and evaluated to ensure that the climate impact actually comes about.

    Climate tech fastest growing vertical

Through VC funds, government commitments and wider societal advocacy for climate action, the European climate tech ecosystem is lighting up. It’s now doubled its value since 2020 and is worth over €100 billion.

We all know how serious the climate crisis is, that’s something we don’t tend to reiterate. Finally, it seems that action is being taken and not just spoken about. We just hope it’s on time and genuine.

Exciting climate funds we’ve reported on this year:

    • Climate.VC: Launched in March to invest €41 million over the next three years.  The fund will take an impact-first investment strategy, looking for net-zero founders that are too often overlooked by traditional VC.
    • Planet Fund:  A venture launched by collaboration between Sky and Founders Factor to champion early-stage entrepreneurs with planet-positive tech, raising about €116 million
    • Kiko Ventures: London-based firm launched as a €427 million platform in June dedicated to climate tech innovation, and became a world-first evergreen cleantech venture investor.
    • Systemiq Capital: Launched its second fund, targeting €200 million to back early-stage climate tech entrepreneurs, accelerating the transition to a resilient, clean and just global economy.
    • Satgana: Launched a new fund with a targeted close of €30 million to support the next generation of impact entrepreneurs.
    • Lightrock: Closed an oversubscribed Climate Impact Fund at €860 million in October, planning to back companies fueling innovation that will solve the climate challenge.

is the best place to stay in Fuerteventura for you? + travel guide

    Contents

    Beaches

Playa de los Lagos, Playa de Marfolin, El Cotillo Beach and La Concha

These are 4 beaches located in the north of El Cotillo. They all have white sands, but the further north you go, the softer and less rocky the beach. Since La Concha is the farthest north, it is the softest and most pleasant beach.

Sheltered and sheltered from the sea by the dunes in this area, the waves are not as high and the wind is less.

    Playa del Castillo

This beach is located south of El Cotillo and is popular with surfers due to the windy weather and higher waves.

    Best hotels in El Cotillo

El Cotillo is not a place where there are many hotels, but you can find a lot of accommodation here for your vacation. If you want to stay in one of the best hotels in the area, then Corralejo Cotillo Beach is a great choice.

    Restaurants, bars and nightlife

As there are many fishing boats and restaurants in El Cotillo, this is a great place to enjoy fresh seafood and drinks next to the sea and the beach. However, when it comes to nightlife, this is a calm and laid-back place.

    Fuerteventura Airport – El Cotillo

El Cotillo is not easily accessible from the airport as there is no direct public transport from the airport and it is 43 km away. Therefore, it is best to pre-book a transfer or taxi before arriving at the airport.

    • There is no direct public transport to El Cotillo. You can get there, but it is much more difficult and requires multiple transfers to the bus.
    • A regular bus will take you there, but it must be ordered before arrival, the cost is 11.04 €.
    • Booking a taxi online before arrival has a fixed price of 65.09 €. The taxi ride from the airport has a starting price of 53€ and will be more expensive on the weekend or in the evening.

This is the company I used and recommend for ordering a taxi or transfer online. You can find more information about public transport here.

Weather in El Cotillo and when to go

El Cotillo has more rainy and cloudy days as it is located in the north of the island compared to other destinations further south of the island. Despite this, there is still very little rain and the weather is mostly warm and sunny. It gets a bit milder in winter and there are usually 3 rainy days a month. Since most of the rain falls in December, you may want to avoid this month. June, July, August and September are the hottest and driest months and are usually the busiest months in the resort.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands – June Weather

    Weather Lowdown:

Though July is the middle of summer, the subtropical climate in the Spanish island city Las Palmas de Gran Canaria keeps the weather perfectly comfortable and makes for a great summer destination with plenty of beautiful beaches and outdoor activities. With an average daily temperature of 24°C during the sunniest month of the year, the highs don’t usually reach more than 27°C and the lows go down to only 21°C, making for an all-around comfortable summer day in the city.

In addition to the warm weather, Las Palmas sees an average of 11 hours of sunshine during July days, making it the sunniest month of the year, with four extra hours of sunshine compared to December. There’s a 75% chance of a sunny day and only a 1% chance of a rainy day, so visitors can plan on leaving their umbrellas at home when they pack for Las Palmas. One of the driest months of the year, there’s an average of only 1 mm of rain in July, occurring over approximately 2 days.

The sea temperature warms up to 20°C in July a perfect temperature for swimming, surfing and snorkeling. There’s a 99% chance of a windy day during this windy summer month in Las Palmas, but the breeze helps the city stay comfortable in the warm weather. Tourists can still enjoy most beach activities like sailing and parasailing on the days with lighter wind.

Consistent daylight and sunshine make planning for a summer trip in Las Palmas easy, and outdoor activities are a reliable source of entertainment for visitors. The city offers a great refuge for tourists escaping the higher summer temperatures found elsewhere in Europe and mainland Spain.

    Where to Stay:

Located in the center of the Playa de las Canteras strip, Hotel Faycan is a great starting point for beach adventures, shopping and the best Canarian restaurants. With all the normal room amenities including free Wi-Fi and a TV, Hotel Faycan also offers comforts for outside of your room such as beach towels, a library, and money exchange services. The bright, beach-y feel of this hotel is perfectly paired with the sound of Atlantic waves.

Hotel Apartments Bajamar is located just a couple of minutes from the beach and surrounded by top shopping like Las Arenas. It’s near public transportation stops as well, which makes exploring Las Palmas easy from these apartments. Rooms range from the Studio to the Penthouse, with free Wi-Fi, a TV, a full bath and a kitchen included in every room, so you can have the comforts of home.

Part of the Best Western Plus family, Hotel Cantur offers comforts such as free Wi-Fi, free beach and pool towels, a fitness room and a computer room. Each room has a mini-bar, work desk, safe and other amenities. In addition, the suites have Jacuzzi bathtubs, making relaxing in the privacy of your own room even easier. If you’d rather head outside, the rooftop heated pool, Jacuzzi and sauna are accompanied by a full service pool bar. And for parents who need a date night, the hotel will arrange babysitting.

    Things to Do:

Take the family deep sea fishing in Las Palmas and reel in large fish such as tuna, marlin, swordfish and even the occasional shark. There are several tour companies that will take you out to sea and show you how to reel in the Atlantic’s best fish. This is a thrilling and family-friendly trip will have you reaching for a rod and a camera all at once.

For a look into the interesting relationship between the Canary Islands and nearby Africa, head to Casa Africa. The house is a working institution set up to foster relationships between Spain and the African continent (which is near Gran Canaria). It is also a gallery space featuring rolling art, photography and video exhibits. Casa Africa is one of the oldest houses in the Arenales neighborhood and is a fascinating landmark.

    Hit the Beach:

Playa de Las Canteras is one of Europe’s most famous urban beaches. Its city-center location and the countless shops and restaurants that line its promenade make it a unique beach experience. Las Canteras is a great beach for barefoot walks on its golden sands that stretch three kilometers. A natural offshore reef protects the beach from large waves, allowing for a wonderful marine life area that makes Las Canteras a top snorkeling spot. Enjoy the beach sunbathing by sand sculptures, relaxing in the shade of umbrellas, or enjoying fresh seafood on the promenade.

    Eating and Drinking Out:

Majuga Restaurant is in the heart of the historic Vegueta neighborhood. This cozy restaurant stays quiet with a small setting that lets its staff focus entirely on the guests. One of the most highly rated restaurants in Las Palmas, Majuga serves traditional fare paired with an excellent wine selection.

The Casa Montesdeoca is a romantic restaurant located inside of a 16th century house. Guests can dine on the patio with its traditional wood balconies and sunny yellow walls. Famous for its steaks, the restaurant menu also focuses on a perfect blend of seafood and Italian dishes.

    Horoscope for today

    Tenerife June.

Tenerife in June – we meet summer on the islands of eternal spring. Prices for holidays and tours in Tenerife

    Pregnancy

In the last month of spring, the exquisite Austrian capital beckons travelers with bright, juicy colors. If you want to see the real Vienna, read the Tour Calendar review of the weather and events in this ancient but lively European city and choose what suits you.

Weather in Vienna in May and May holidays

In May, the weather in the Austrian capital is quite unpredictable, although the amount of heat and sunshine is increasingly similar to summer. Daytime temperature has a large range: from +13..+15°C in early May to +19..+23°С, and occasionally up to +30°С, at the end of the month. Therefore, taking on vacation, in addition to lightweight jackets and sweaters, short-sleeve T-shirts, you will not be mistaken. However, the May night indicators differ from the daytime ones by almost 2 times. Evening coolness invigorates in the temperature range from +6. .+8°С at the beginning of May to +10..+13°С at the end of the month. Sharp May cold snaps do not bypass the heart of Austria: it is quite possible to get to 0..+1°C at night. In addition, the wind (and May in Vienna is the windiest month of the year) also gives a feeling of lower temperatures. That’s when it doesn’t hurt to warm up, because the daylight hours are already much longer compared to the beginning of spring, and you can wander through the old Viennese streets until late in the evening. Rain is not an unexpected occurrence in May in an old European city: compared to the previous month, there is more rainfall. This does not mean at all that all days in May are cloudy and rainy: on average, there are from 4 to 8 days with precipitation for the whole month. You can take a small folding umbrella with you, or by spending a few euros, you can buy it on the spot. But in terms of the amount of spring sunshine, Vienna is far ahead of many cities in central Europe. Celestial ultraviolet is given by the May luminary, delighting tourists of the Austrian capital with an attraction of incredible generosity, in general, about 18 days a month. At midday, already in mid-May, it is necessary to take care of a light cap or hat, as well as sunglasses, so that the planned rest is not spoiled by the activity of solar radiation.

What to do in Vienna in May?

The May trip will give you the opportunity to enjoy not only visiting the famous museums and theaters of the capital, but also walking along the narrow Viennese streets of the old city center, charming parks and squares in their emerald freshness. Spring sonorous bird polyphony can rightfully compete with musical concerts, which the capital is rightfully famous for.

    Entertainment and excursions

The weather in May makes it possible to spend more and more time outdoors, so walking around the local sights is just right. An ambiguous tourist place can be called the “Tower of Fools” – a sort of Viennese analogue of the St. Petersburg Kunstkamera. The exposition is for a lover of specific thrills, as this is a modern museum of anatomy and pathology. Children’s delights will be taken by a small railway and a survey wheel striking in its size in the Prater park. Here you need to prepare for a large number of visitors, because the tourist season has already begun.

The oldest European Zoo, active fountains, lilac blossoms and snow-white candles of flowering chestnuts – all this is the Schönbrunn May Park, which will be interesting for both adults and children. If, in a craving for botany, someone tries to count the number of exotic plants in the Botanical Garden of Belvedere Park, he is unlikely to succeed: there will not be enough strength for the entire list of eleven thousand copies. But to admire the plants, most of which begin their flowering in May, you should have enough strength. If the May rain caught you by surprise, you can go to the Hofburg, where there is also a silver museum, an ethnographic museum, a butterfly museum, a museum of Empress Sisi and much more, which will take more than one hour. You can also admire the peculiarity of the rainy landscape of May Vienna, or rather the Ringstrasse, through the tram window of route No. 1 and No. 2 of the Vienna Lines. Bus number 360, departing from the building of the Vienna Opera, in 40 minutes will take you to the world of relaxation – the thermal baths of the Austrian Baden. Ticket prices and current promotions are specified on the Romer-terma website.

    Holidays and festivals

It’s funny to see red symbolism with a hammer and sickle on May 1 in a modern European capital. In Vienna, Labor Day (Tag des Arbeits) is a national holiday. Gastronomic delights of Austrian cuisine can be tasted at the culinary festival Wiener Genuss-Festival in early May in the city park Wiener Stadtpark.

The Vienna Music and Theater Festival Wiener Festwochen, with a tradition of more than half a century, starts in the middle of the month and lasts until the end. Arriving in Vienna at the end of May, you will be taken to the beginning of the Arts Festival. The grand opening, music, dancing, and fireworks at the end – all this will take place on the day of the start of the Festival on the square near the Town Hall. An extravagant and accessible event for everyone at the end of May can be considered a charity Life Ball, which takes place until the morning in the Town Hall itself and in the Volksgarten park.

If you like warm, moderately hot weather and prefer the Canary Islands, then you should spend your holiday in June in Tenerife. Comfortable air temperature, invigorating ocean, healing volcanic sand of the beaches and softening the emerging heat wind are the main advantages of relaxing on the island. Not too comfortable swimming in the cool ocean, the resort compensates with beautiful views and a developed entertainment industry. In June, Tenerife conquered fans of outdoor activities with the opportunity to glide on the waves, honing their skills.

In June, some rainfall can occur in the north of the island, but this part of the island is not popular with tourists. In June, it is better to relax in the southern resorts of Tenerife (Costa Adeje, Playa de Americas and Los Cristianos).

The ocean is still cool, but swimming is quite possible. It will warm up to its maximum + 25 ° only by August, so you should not be particularly upset. Therefore, +21º is not such a big miss because of which it is worth worrying about. Whoever thinks this water is cold can swim in the hotel pools. There is enough sun and heat for everyone here.

Rain on the southern part of the island is almost impossible, but cloudiness is quite possible. But be careful. You can get sunburned by the Tenerife sun even in cloudy weather!

June in Tenerife is quite windy, so it seems to be cooler than it really is. Beach lovers may not like this weather, but for those who like to spend their holidays actively, the conditions are ideal. Things to do on the island in June:

    • walk through the gorges ( and )
    • climb
    • visit the killer whale show in
    • come off to the fullest in
    • or organize a private sightseeing tour of the entire island

TRAVELING WITH A BABY – The Twirling Traveler

    Posted by thetwirlingtraveler on

    JULY 2021

I always seem to have the best timing with these blogs as the travel advice to Lanzarote has just changed again to “do not travel”. Well, I would absolutely recommend you to travel here, as we had a great time this past June. Lanzarote had only just arrived on my travel radar, as it has been one of the islands that was able to keep COVID out after a rough start and it was one of the first possible travel destinations of 2021. We were super happy with our choice, as we found Lanzarote an incredibly relaxed and diverse travel destination. Not only is the nature absolutely stunning, but you can also find many cute Spanish villages and immerse yourself in Spanish culture and cuisine. If you are into volcano hiking, you can do many stringent hikes on Lanzarote. We traveled with a baby that cannot sit independently, so we did very different activities and we found that you can experience a lot that Lanzarote has to offer even if you are traveling with a baby! I hope to have inspired you to visit this very underrated island.

    PRACTICAL INFORMATION

You can arrive to Lanzarote by plane in Arrecife, or by ferry from the other Canary Islands. Fuerteventura is located south of Lanzarote and can be done on a day trip with the ferry. Lanzarote is the Canary Island that is located closest to Morocco, so you will find some Moroccan influences on the island, though it belongs to Spain. You will mainly find lodging in the coastal areas of the island. We decided to stay in Playa Blanca, in the South of the island, as it is easy to find a good deal in this area. I booked a holiday villa at “Villas Costa Papagayo” for € 100 per night. The villa could easily accommodate six adults as there were three bedrooms and two bathrooms, so it was way too big for us, but it was one of the cheapest villas with a private pool. The interior was a bit dated, but it was spacious and comfortable. I absolutely loved our pool, it had the perfect temperature even though Hugo found it too cold. Playa Blanca is a very touristy town, but when we visited in June 2021 it wasn’t very crowded. It offers a nice range of restaurants and the city center was cuter than I expected. I didn’t see a lot of bars, so I guess it’s not that kind of town. One reason why Lanzarote looks so clean and stylish is because of the influences of the designer Cesar Manrique.

    Cesar Manrique

Manrique started developing Lanzarote in the sixties. The vision of Manrique is one of the reasons why Lanzarote is beautifully balanced with volcanic grounds and whitewashed houses and why the coast has not been ruined with high-rise buildings. Manrique was an artist and painter and was able to use Lanzarote as his design studio. Even though he passed away in 1992 Lanzarote still uses his design rules when they are developing new areas. They even named the airport after him. Now, you can visit many of his designs as a touristic spot and I recommend that you visit at least a few. But even if you decide not to visit his sights, you will not be able to escape his vision and will still see his presence everywhere. We visited the Cactus Garden and the Mirador del Rio, which you can both visit for respectively € 6 and € 5. I am a big design lover and I loved how Manrique combined the volcanic rocks with round shapes. He designed both with respect for its natural surroundings.

Unfortunately when we visited Mirador del Rio it was a cloudy day, but the weather cleared a little bit when we went outside to take pictures of the view. From the Mirador del Rio you can spot the little island La Graciosa, which we unfortunately were not able to visit as it would be too much of a hassle with a baby, I did hear it’s really good! The inside of the Mirador del Rio provides sufficient reasons to visit, as it features an amazing spiral staircase and beautiful rounded windows in the restaurant. Luckily, Huug slept through this experience so I could fully take in the beauty of this place.

We decided not to visit one of Manrique’s most famous sights: the Jameos del Agua, because of the crazy amount of tour buses that we spotted in front of the entrance. If you are able to visit it first thing in the morning I am sure it is worth it though, but this was something that we were not able to do because of Hugo’s morning sleep.

    Hidden gems on the island

I wrote a separate blogpost about the hidden gems of Lanzarote. You will find so many unspoiled spots in Lanzarote, the island is so naturally beautiful that they deserved their own blog post. If you have a drone, make sure to bring it as you will have so many great droning opportunities.

    Other things to do

La Geria: The vineyards of La Geria are one of the reasons that we picked Lanzarote as our Canary island of destination. Just check out my pictures below to see what I mean 😉 The circles are made to shelter the plants from the strong winds and create a super unique landscape. We found the volcanic wine very tasty as well! We just drove up a road to take some pictures with our drone, as there were no visitors.

National Park Timanfaya: We didn’t officially enter the national park, but we just drove by. Because of safety (?) reasons you can only visit the park with a bus tour or on a camel back, which we were not keen on doing, so we drove by to get a little look. We were super impressed with the rock formations, so we were happy that we had a little sneak peak.

Charco de los Ciclos: This is a lookout over a beautiful black beach with a green lake inside it. You can usually access the beach, but not on the day that we visited. Would have loved to do some droning above these spectacular colors, but we ended up only visiting the lookout because of the restrictions. Just around the corner you will find the little town El Golfo, which is known for its many seafood restaurants.

Playa Papagayo: Playa Papagayo is one of the prettiest beaches of Lanzarote and it gets very popular. Surprisingly we were able to find a spot in the shade of the rocks on 4PM in a weekend. Beware that you have to drive on a dirt road for over 15 minutes before you get to the parking. The walk down the beach can be done with a stairs and is very easy.

Salinas de Janubio: The saltpans of Janubio are the largest in the Canary Islands. I have always had a weird fascination with saltpans and was able to carefully enter this one. You can hardly see me in the drone shots below, so you can understand how large they were!

Playa de Famara: This is the (kite) surfer’s beach where you will see a golden glow all day long. It somehow reminded me of South Africa. Gorgeous, but very windy spot and not suitable for babies.

Teguise: Teguise is the most beautiful town on Lanzarote, so we ended up visiting twice. During the weekends you can visit a very popular market and the atmosphere is really great. You will find lots of bodegas and specialty shops open on the weekends, but during the week lots of them are closed, so make sure to do some research if you specifically want to visit something.

    Restaurants

Most of the cuisine on Lanzarote is typically Spanish, you will find many authentic tapas restaurants and bodegas. I found the cuisine on Tenerife a bit too British oriented, so I was pleasantly surprised by Lanzarote. Of course you can also stay in an all inclusive resort, it is much more fun to explore the local cuisine, which is exactly what we did. We headed out for long lunches as that was the time that Hugo did a long siesta. In the evenings we cooked a simple meal in our villa. I will highlight our favorite food experiences below.

La Bodega de Santiago in Yaiza: This is a bodega with a comfortable terrace situated under a large tree with excellent local food. The ceviche, lamb and chocolate desert were absolutely divine! This restaurant is very spacious, so we could easily park the stroller next to our table. It is a bit more pricy than most restaurants on the island, but worth it. I recommend reserving a table because it can fill up quickly.

El Recoveco in Teguise: This is a very popular tapas restaurant, which is perfect for a simple, yet delicious meal. It is situated on a very atmospheric square and was full with Spanish speaking people when we visited.

Wine tasting in La Geria: La Geria is the wine district of Lanzarote, where you will find the super impressive grape plants growing on volcanic soil. We stopped at Bodega La Geria for a cheese platter and wine tasting, which was very cheap and tasty. Sometimes tour buses also stop here, but you can visit many other bodegas in this area.

    Why Lanzarote

Lanzarote is located off the coast of West Africa and is part of the dreamy Canary Islands. Before booking your cheap flights to Lanzarote, Spain it’s well worth getting to know a little more about this paradise island.

Lanzarote is famous for being a hotspot for travellers looking to relax and unwind, but it’s also an ideal destination for thrill seekers and adventurers. Many people still see Lanzarote as a generic sun holiday, but the island has a lot more going on than meets the eye. Case in point is Timanfaya National Park, a spectacular volcanic landscape that covers a quarter of the island.  Lanzarote is perfect for watersports too. Windsurfing is very popular on the island as is surfing. One thing’s for sure, you won’t be bored when you fly to Lanzarote.

When to book cheap flights to Lanzarote

Summers in Lanzarote can be very warm and humid with temperatures getting up to 28°C so if you’re not a fan of the heat it might be better to book your cheap Lanzarote flights in the spring or in the autumn when it’s a little bit cooler. The island is at its busiest during the summer months (school holidays), so booking Lanzarote flights outside of the peak season is a good idea if you’re looking to avoid crowded beaches. The island doesn’t really experience winter either, with temperatures rarely dropping below 20°C. If you’re planning on going to surf, the best time is from October to November when the waves start to get really big.

    What to see in Lanzarote

When you book cheap flights to Lanzarote you can afford to explore the island and book a tour or two with the savings you’ve made. Timanfaya National Park is well worth visiting. The 50km stretch of volcanoes closely resemble the surface of the moon and it is a truly remarkable place to explore. The stones there get so hot you can even cook a steak on them.

Lanzarote is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Europe. Unwind at Playa Blanca, which is also known as White Beach. Once you see the miles of white sandy beach you’ll understand where the name came from. In the summer, the crystal clear waters are perfect for cooling off. Lanzarote is also a perfect spot for surfers. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a beginner, Lanzarote is a great place to hop on a board.

    Getting around

The best way to get around in Lanzarote is probably by car. There are limited bus services on the island. Some of the main attractions aren’t on a bus route either. So it’s best to not rely on buses during your trip. Luckily, you will find some great deals on car rentals using Ryanair Car Hire. You can drive from place to place on the island and take in the incredible scenery along the way, and you’ll be able to spend as much time as you want at each attraction. The next best option is to get a taxi to bring you where you need to go. They are easy enough to find and relatively inexpensive.

    What to eat in Lanzarote

If you’re a fan of seafood, then you’ll have a lot to look forward to when you fly to Lanzarote. The island is home to a range of popular fish dishes including “Sancocho”.   This sautéed seafood dish is absolutely divine.  A favourite amongst locals is grilled octopus. You’ll find it in pretty much every restaurant on the island, from fancy restaurants to cheap diners and even in tapas bars.

Another local delicacy on the island is “Mojo Potatoes”. These are wrinkled potatoes with green and red pepper sauce on the side. Enjoy!
