Fuerteventura – Costa Caleta
Fuerteventura – Costa Caleta
Fuerteventura is the closest Canary Island to the African coast, with only 100km separating the ‘Punta de la Entallada’ on its west coast from Cape Juby in Morocco, and is the second largest (after Tenerife) of all the islands. With 3 thousand hours of sunshine a year, the climate is very similar to Florida and Mexico which are on the same latitude, making the island a great choice for some guaranteed winter sunshine and warmer temperatures.
Beautiful Beaches
Thought to be the oldest of all the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura’s strangely contoured landscape has evolved from various volcanic episodes. The island is renowned for its beautiful turquoise waters, as well as its numerous vast sand dunes and long, sandy beaches – considered some of the finest in Europe.
Modern Resort
We are based in the modern resort of Costa Caleta, one of the most popular on the island. This laid-back, relaxed resort is comprised mainly of low-rise, whitewashed accommodation and hotels fringing the sheltered horseshoe shaped bay of sweeping golden sands. When you are not soaking up the rays, the resort has a variety of shops, cafés and lively bars to sample. At night, the pace is low-key, perfect for a stroll after dinner in the warm evening air along the seafront to admire the picturesque 18th-century watchtower and castle overlooking the marina.
Further afield
If you fancy a change of scene, a short bus ride away is the island’s capital, Puerto del Rosario, a bustling traditional Canarian port, which is easily walkable, and known for its strange collection of over 100 quirky sculptures by local and international artists which are dotted around the town. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can do a quick island hop over to neighbouring Lanzarote.
More to explore
- Take a boat tour around the island
- Embark on a catamaran cruise
- Visit neighbouring Lanzarote by ferry

There is often confusion on the question of gratuities, since it frequently depends on the type of holiday, location and, of course, your attitude towards tipping, as to what is normally expected. In order to give you a rough idea, we have given appropriate guidance below.
Your Tour Leader will be on hand to offer advice or suggestions if required but gratuities are offered entirely at the sole discretion of the individual. We suggest a group collection to cover drivers, porters and hotel staff of €15.00. Your Tour Leader will collect this on your behalf and distribute it accordingly, thus relieving you of the burden of who, when and how much to tip. The tipping of housekeeping will be left to your individual discretion (a small amount left in your room on departure should cover this and would be much appreciated). As is customary, ‘the hat’ will be passed around for the driver and guide on all optional excursions. For any meals that are not included in your itinerary, or taxi fares, your Tour Leader can advise of an appropriate percentage to add on.
Medium weights for Winter. Casual “layers” for the autumn and spring months and a warm jacket is recommended for the cool mornings and evenings. Comfortable shoes are a “must” for sightseeing. The hotel prefers reasonably smart dress for dinner – gentlemen are asked to wear long trousers and a formal shirt.

Introduction
Holiday on Fuerteventura: discover this Canary island
With my feet in the white sand, my enchanted gaze was aimed at the sea. Dozens of dots in all colours of the rainbow were floating above the horizon. The kites belonged to surfers who had come here in great numbers for a beach holiday. The Spanish island of Fuerteventura is the island of the four elements: a refreshing sea breeze, cacti, a unique lava landscape and azure blue water. Was I going to use this holiday on Fuerteventura to learn how to surf? Or would I stick to the Canary pace of life and just relax in the sun? After doing some extensive hopping between the gorgeous members of this island group, I can confidently say that none of the other Canary Islands compare to this unique landscape.
Small-scale hotels & villas on Fuerteventura
Mi casa, su casa! I can recommend some traditional and modern Spanish holiday homes on Fuerteventura where you’ll have an unforgettable time. The owners will give you a warm welcome and you’ll feel right at home. The hotels on Fuerteventura boast a Canary style on the inside and a rustic look on the outside.
My authentic recommendations for the Spanish islands are small-scale and the owners only have a few places available. Be sure to book your holiday to Fuerteventura in time. Still looking for holiday inspiration? Check out my latest discoveries or last minutes to Fuerteventura.
Fly & Drive on Fuerteventura
Good to know: my flying holidays to Fuerteventura always include a rental car and a place to stay.

Places to visit on Fuerteventura
After Tenerife, Fuerteventura is the largest island of the Canary island group Tenerife in Spain . Just like the neighbouring island of Lanzarote, Fuertaventure has a volcanic origin. Add a warm, dry climate to the mix and you get a unique landscape with tall mountains, meandering cliffs and sandy plains. Sometimes you’ll feel all alone in the world! Oncoming traffic is rare, especially when driving around in your rental car on a fly & drive holiday in Fuerteventura. It’s almost as if you’ve got the island all to yourself!
An island full of stunning panoramic views from one of its viewpoints such as the glass Mirador de Morro Velosa or during one of many intense hikes. One of my trips to Fuerteventura took me to the peninsula of Jandia. This is where you’ll find the island’s tallest mountain, Pico de Jandía, towering no less than 807 metres above the sea! Quite hot during the summer holiday, the climb is very pleasant if you do it in late summer. My favourite hike was on the tallest mountain, Pico de la Zarza. Make sure to head out at night as well, the rugged landscape under a clear starry sky is breathtaking!
You’ll find many kilometres worth of beaches by the coast. The sand is white or golden yellow, the water crystal clear. This island is very popular among surfers. You’ll find classes for surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing all over the island, including Costa Calma and Caleta de Fuste. And if you’re not much of a water sports enthusiast yourself, it’s still a lot of fun to watch the surfers and kiters go all out. You’ll find them in droves during the colourful kite festival in November. The coast is also littered with authentic fishermen’s villages for you to explore. My favourite is El Cotillo in the north-west, where you’ll be welcomed by a characteristic red lighthouse. Sometimes I’ll hop on a boat in Corralejo for a trip to Lanzarote .
Culinary trip to Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura’s culinary speciality isn’t very difficult to guess: fish, of course! In each town, you’re seduced by the most delicious aromas leading the way to the local fish restaurant. Be adventurous and order the catch of the day. They usually serve the fish grilled and stuffed with garlic and herbs. The Spanish cuisine usually features fresh, local products such as potatoes and tomatoes. And the owners of my Spanish villa told me that the islanders like their food spicy! Every meal starts with bread and a generous amount of Mojo, a spicy sauce. Restaurants each have their own recipe, each making their Mojo Rojo even spicier than the next.
Don’t forget to try the goat’s cheese on your trip to Fuerteventura. Goats outnumber people on this island as they flourish in the rocky natural environment. Goats are the source of Queso Majorero, a hard milky cheese that features in many local dishes and is often enjoyed together with a glass of wine. Just like mainland Spaniards, the ‘Fuerte’ locals love a lavish and extensive dinner. Enjoy your meal!
The weather: from Fuerteventura with love
It almost seems too good to be true: the weather on Fuerteventura is comfortable year round! With no less than 3000 hours of sun a year, Fuerteventura is the sunniest place in Europe. Temperatures are great as early as spring. Often rising above 25 degrees in summer, the sea breeze makes a sun holiday nice and comfy. And even from October to February, temperatures don’t drop below twenty degrees. This makes Fuerteventura a warm destination for a winter sun holiday in de Mediterranean. I do recommend to bring an extra sweater because the evenings can get a bit chilly.
