As winter begins to take hold, it can inspire even the most stalwart of us to want to escape to somewhere warm. While any sunny destination will likely be a welcome change from the cold, there are a few locales scattered throughout the world that can offer the best combinations of favorable weather and delightful attractions for a holiday during December.

From Europe to the US, here are some of the best destinations in the world that are particularly good options to consider for your December getaway.

Baja California Sur, Mexico

At the southern end of the Baja California Peninsula lie some of the most luxurious resorts, bluest Pacific waters, and most spectacular landscapes in the whole of Mexico. As far as tourism, the region is dominated by the resort towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, which is where you’ll find the majority of the state’s beach hotels and luxury accommodations.

Both cities are located on the south shore of the peninsula where the winter weather is notoriously gorgeous. In December, you’ll encounter very little rainfall, breezy, warm days, and far fewer tourists than you would find in the spring high season. And it’s a particularly good time of year for whale watching, as this is when whales travel south seeking warmer parts of the Pacific.

Where to Stay in Baja California Sur: Just a short drive from Cabo San Lucas is the Hibiscus Flower, a luxurious sun-drenched villa with an expansive outdoor living space. Situated within the Villa La Estancia resort, the location is very exclusive.

The Canary Islands

The warmest European destination in December, the Canary Islands have long been a titan of the resort season. Because they’ve been catering to winter tourists for so long, there is a wealth of infrastructure in place for visitors: hotels, dining, and shopping are all plentiful, with a myriad of options for every budget.

Of the islands, the warmest during December is usually Gran Canaria, known for its wide, busy beaches and vibrant nightlife. Though many folks vacation right in Las Palmas, home to the island’s only airport, on the southern shore is the quaint resort town of Maspalomas where you’ll find fewer crowds, calmer water, and a nearby nature reserve with vast sand dunes that will make you feel like you’re in another world.

Where to Stay in the Canary Islands: An 18th-century colonial house turned adults-only boutique hotel, the Veintiuno received an extensive restoration that brought the property to the height of contemporary design without sacrificing its original, old-world details.

Mombasa, Kenya

The second most populous city in Kenya after its capital Nairobi, Mombasa is home to a bustling old town, delectable culinary traditions, and sits just adjacent to some of the most spectacular beaches in all of Africa. Mombasa has a tropical climate, so although rain is typically frequent, December is one of the driest months of the year.

While there are a few prime, white-sand beaches right by the city, just a short drive can bring you to even more wild and unspoiled stretches of coastline. The most popular beach outside of the city is Diani Beach, which has soft, white sand, sparkling blue water, and a multitude of options for dining and lodging nearby. You can choose from all-inclusive resorts just steps from the ocean or rustic beach camps inspired by the rugged beauty of the surrounding jungle.

Where to Stay in Mombasa: Combining both Arabic and Kenyan influences, the design of the Swahili Beach Resort is intended to envelop you in comfort. At the same time, their staff caters dutifully to your every need.

Bermuda

A British Overseas territory in the mid-Atlantic, the small island of Bermuda is famous for its picturesque, pink sand beaches. It is known as the “shipwreck capital of the Atlantic”, as it is ringed by coral reefs that have infamously snagged hundreds of approaching ships over the years. Though dangerous for boats, these same reefs are perfect if you’re a fan of diving or snorkeling, particularly in December as hurricane season will have just ended.

Probably the most compelling attractions on the island are the magical Crystal and Fantasy Caves. This incredible cave system is replete with thousands of crystalline speleothems and subterranean lakes, though thankfully you’ll find a boardwalk constructed just so visitors like yourself can more easily explore.

Where to Stay in Bermuda: With its own private beach club on one of Bermuda’s most renowned pink-sand beaches, the Fairmont Southampton offers some of the most generous amenities on the island for families, including childcare, kids’ play and swim areas, and even water slides.

Rio de Janiero, Brazil

Home of some of the most famed beaches in the world, Rio de Janeiro is synonymous with its coastline, and unlike its northern counterparts, December marks the beginning of summer. Keep in mind that summer in Rio is hot. Temperatures can occasionally exceed 90º F, but the steamy nightlife and rich culture are well worth braving the heat.

The most popular beaches in Rio, claimed by pop culture for everything from songs to movies, are Copacabana and Ipanema. These are also the busiest stretches of sand, where you’ll find both towering resort hotels as well as beach bars and restaurants. If you have time, also try to visit some of the beaches north of there just off of the city center, like the Praia Flamengo. In comparison, the vibe seems nearly the opposite: much more local and far fewer crowds.

Where to Stay in Rio de Janeiro: The result of a four-year, comprehensive restoration, the Emiliano Rio is a clear nod to Brazillian Modernism. Many come for the rooftop infinity pool overlooking the iconic Copacabana beach.

Phuket, Thailand

Long famed for its near-perfect white sand beaches that seem to poke right out of the jungle, Phuket is Thailand’s most popular resort destination. While it is a fantastic city to visit in its own right, it also serves as a gateway to a number of nearby islands and municipalities that draw thousands of tourists every year.

Now re-opened to tourism, travelers can fly directly into Phuket from abroad without transiting to Bangkok, making it exceedingly easy to visit. Once there, you can cross off the unique majesty of Phang Nga Bay from your bucket list: the warm, turquoise water and impossibly tall limestone cliffs of Thailand’s most famous bay are the biggest draw to the region and a must-see while you’re in town.

Where to Stay in Phuket: The perfect blend of Western and Eastern influences, the Naam Sawan Villa invites you to luxuriate on their grounds though you’re welcome to explore Cape Yamu Beach as well. They provide everything you’ll need for your stay, including a housekeeper, a pool maintenance technician, and even an in-house chef.

The Maldives

An island nation in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is comprised of over a thousand individual coral islands arranged into 26 distinct atolls. The island chain stretches across the equator, and in December its tropical climate is tempered somewhat by a break in the rain and humidity, with the latter half of the month experiencing dry, balmy days and breezy sunsets.

The Maldives is famous for its over-sea bungalow resorts which range in size from quaint but well-appointed huts to elaborate, modern villas. While the Maldives isn’t renowned for catering to budget travelers, there are some relatively reasonably priced options available for those who don’t mind a typical beach bungalow or hotel.

Where to Stay in the Maldives: On its own secluded island along the Maldivian atoll, Lhaviyani, the Hurawalhi Island Resort provides over-water cabanas – as one might seek out in the Maldives – but they also have the distinction of having an underwater restaurant.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Home to both the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, and the world’s largest shopping mall, Dubai has made a name for itself as a city of excesses. No other city in the region is more renowned for offering the most luxurious and ostentatious attractions, and in December, when the most intense heat has subsided, is the perfect time to experience this truly unique locale.

Where to Stay in Dubai: Situated in the heart of downtown Dubai, the Anantara provides easy access to both the airport and many local attractions while offering sweeping views of the city, with many suites facing the iconic Burj Khalifa.

Key West, Florida

This tiny island at the southernmost tip of the Florida Keys is easy to reach from Fort Lauderdale or Miami, but it feels like it’s an entire world away. The self-proclaimed “Conch Republic” is home to tropical weather, its famous frozen cocktails, and a distinct culture and vibe from the rest of Florida.

December might be the perfect month to visit Key West, when the humidity ebbs somewhat and its notoriously quirky locals erect elaborate – and sometimes hilarious – displays for Christmas. Temperatures will rarely dip below 70º F, even at night, and the water is just warm enough to go snorkeling without a wet suit.

Where to Stay in Key West: Located on a tiny island just off of Key West, the Sunset Key Cottages are perfect for those who want to get away from it all and decompress. Their in-house spa will serve as the ideal accouterment to your tropical seclusion.

Medellín, Colombia

Called the “City of Eternal Spring,” Medellín is world-famous for maintaining a nearly constant perfect temperature, but in December you’ll find considerably less rain than at other times of the year. The end of the month in particular is when you’ll begin to feel a considerable decline in humidity, with the week around Christmas being particularly auspicious for having clear skies.

This landlocked, high-altitude Columbian city is obviously not a beach destination, but lovers of culture and the arts will feel right at home. You can tour the former home of one of the most famed scholars in Columbia’s history turned museum at the Casa Museo Pedro Nel Gómez, or marvel at their exquisite collections of contemporary art both domestic and from around the world at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín.

Where to Stay in Medellín: Situated in one of the best neighborhoods in Medellín for tourists and expats, La Posada Boutique offers impeccable design, youthful energy, and a commitment to the surrounding community on which you can rely.

We’ve rounded up the top 12 places to get some all-important winter sun just in time for Christmas

As the cold takes firm hold of Europe, sun seeking generally requires a longer flight. True, there are spots closer to home with the good grace to linger around 20°C, but winter provides an excellent excuse for a far-flung getaway, when a powerful and prolonged dose of vitamin D is practically prescribed. Hot cities in Africa and Australia will come alive this month, as their summers finally arrive, while tropical islands and unsung corners of the world will hit their peak. See below for our edit of where is hot in December. For more travel inspiration, see our guide to the best winter sun destinations.

    Dubai

    AVERAGE DECEMBER TEMP: 26°C

    The seven hour-flight from London to Dubai can just about be classed as medium-haul, while the time difference between the two is a jet-lag-free four hours – but this desert city in the Middle East feels worlds away from chilly England in December. Sure, there’s the glitzy side of Dubai – its mega-malls and skyscraping hotels are decked out in festive lights and ginormous trees for the season – but there’s a more laidback side to the city, too. Life’n One is a hidden yoga retreat for those hoping to end the year on a healthy note, while cultural hub Alserkal Avenue is a great place to escape the heat in arthouse cinemas and indie galleries.

    Where to stay: Forget the glitz and glam, this cool new un-Dubai hotel is 25hours Hotel One Central, a hub for creatives, digital nomads, and those in the know. If you’re here to venture to the pool and nothing more, Anantara World Islands Dubai Resort is a great option, especially for families. For a stay that’s unlike anything else in Dubai, book a room at the secluded five-room hotel and spa Al Faya Lodge an hour east of the city. See our edit of the best hotels in Dubai for more.

    Lanzarote, Canary Islands

    AVERAGE DECEMBER TEMP: 21°C

    We called it ‘the surprisingly cool Canary island’, but we weren’t talking about the weather. The fact that Lanzarote resides off Africa’s west coast means that even in December it’s still fairly sane to take a dip. Avoid the package hordes and head to fine, white-sand Papagayo Beach on the southern tip of the island, or try world-class surfing in north-west Famara. In fact, more surprises lie in store the further you stray from the tourist hotels. There’s the Jardín de Cactus in Guatiza, a surreal succulent amphitheatre; or starkly alluring Timanfaya National Park, a volcanic wilderness that starred in 1966 film One Million Years BC. And don’t forget Finca Malvasia, a seductive ranch-like retreat in the central wine region, owned by a pair of designers who swapped London for island life. After wintering in Lanzarote, you might just join them.

    Where to stay: La Cabaña, a slick and earthy villa with a quote-mark-shaped swimming pool and views down to Puerto Calero. For more, check out our list of the best villas in Lanzarote.

    Bali, Indonesia

    AVERAGE DECEMBER TEMP: 27°C

    It’s one of South-east Asia’s winter-sun kingpins for good reason – tropical Bali’s lush rainforest and white-sand beaches tick all the boxes when it comes to a warm-weather escape. Once-scrappy beach town Canggu draws Indonesia’s thriving digital-nomad crowd, along with blissed-out surfers, while artists’ village Ubud is a hub for those seeking a more spiritual getaway.

    Where to stay: Teetering on a high clifftop overlooking the Indian Ocean on Bali’s southern coast, Six Senses Uluwatu is a wellness retreat that gets it just right. In Canggu, we like The Slow, a 12-room bolthole with an achingly cool cocktail of art, music and interior design. Riverside jungle hideout Capella Ubud feels like an African tented camp from the 19th century and makes an ideal base that avoids any desert-island clichés. If you’re travelling in a group, Bali has some incredible villas and Airbnbs, like Laputa Villa which sleeps four and is widely known as “The Bamboo Castle in the Sky.” For more, see our pick of the best Bali hotels.

    Marrakech, Morocco

    AVERAGE DECEMBER TEMP: 20°C

    When winter is in full flow, don’t underestimate the power of a three-and-a-half-hour flight to another world. Yes, Marrakech is hectic, but a recent influx of design hotels – most of them reimagining glorious, red-brick riads – means there’s always somewhere more sedate to escape to. Alternatively, take up residence in a palace: La Mamounia, a grande dame of landscaped gardens, fountains, opulent tiles and velvets, is a card-carrying member of our best hotels in the world Gold List. Or book a stay at Royal Mansour, the city’s most lavish hotel, which proves you needn’t plunge into the medina madness outside to get the best of Marrakech.

    Where to stay: As we mentioned above there are no shortage of hotels in Marrakech. For a traditional riad stay, Riad Goloboy is a feast for the eyes (and Instagram) with kaleidoscopic walls and a gallery-worthy art collection.

    Miami, USA

    The city’s year-round warm weather comes into its own in December, when the beach parties continue while other sun spots – we’re looking at you, California – pull on a sweater. For a calmer vibe, try the less-developed northern end of Miami Beach. It’s here that chef Thomas Keller serves elegant classics (oysters, steak tartare, lobster thermidor) at the landmark The Surf Club, among potted palms and white-coated waiters who evoke the spot’s history as the go-to of the 1950s jet set. Better yet, the recently extended, hacienda-style Four Seasons is here (Elizabeth Taylor and Wallis Simpson count among former guests). Refined might not be the word typically associated with Miami, but let this breath of fresh air change your mind.

    Where to stay: Miami Beach Edition sits inside the skeleton of the Seville, one of the giant 1950s hotels, with nods to the past, a connection to the city’s heritage and a bar with uninterrupted ocean views.

    Bahamas, Caribbean

    AVERAGE DECEMBER TEMP: 26°C

    It’s peak season in the Bahamas, and while that will certainly keep the beaches busy, it also means perfect weather. Our tip: strike out for Harbour Island, a three-mile-long, mile-and-a-half-wide sliver of sensational, pink-sand stretches, where there are always enough sunbeds to go around. Make camp at its smartest hotel, Bahama House, a chic cottage with retro Palm Beach vibes, a sunken tiki bar and just 11 rooms. It’s part of Eleven Experience, an experiential-travel specialist, you can also take advantage of custom adventures such as diving in secret grottoes or swimming with swines on Pig Beach.

    Where to stay: Pelican Bay Hotel. Inside, waterside rooms combine Caribbean cheerfulness with classic European style. Outside, white-sand beaches, lush boulevards and beautiful seascapes.

  • Getty Images

    Cape Town, South Africa

    AVERAGE DECEMBER TEMP: 27°C

    Cape Town is always a good idea, but particularly in December, when the fledgling South African summer sets beaches and vineyards aglow. The mere sight of beautiful crowds bronzing against its theatrical, cragged mountain backdrop will banish the winter blues in one blow. And just when you thought the Mother City’s raw good looks, smart art and design scenes and world-class food couldn’t get more appealing, it only goes and adds a pair of super-hot hotels, too.

    Where to stay: The Silo, which is ingeniously set inside a former grain elevator house at the top of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa on the Victoria and Albert Waterfront. Also on our Gold List, Ellerman House is an imposing Edwardian mansion with smashing views of the Atlantic and one of the country’s finest private-art collections.

    Auckland, New Zealand

    AVERAGE DECEMBER TEMP: 22°C

    Just like that low-and-slow New Zealand drawl, Auckland is a big, beautiful city that’s seldom in a hurry. Perhaps that’s what happens when there’s nature everywhere – rainforest-covered hills here; the glittering Hauraki Gulf there. And the notion that the affable country is somehow behind the times is rebuffed by the likes of the Britomart complex, a series of waterfront heritage buildings turned boutiques and restaurants, and Iko Iko, a fabulous concept store with fans such as Emilia Wickstead. Add in a ferry trip to nearby Waiheke Island’s sandy beaches and vineyard wine tastings and be totally converted to the Kiwi lifestyle.

    Where to stay: Hilton Auckland is über-trendy retro futurism in a gleaming wharf shed redeveloped to resemble a cruise-liner.

  • Getty Images

    Merida, Yucatan Peninsula

    AVERAGE DECEMBER TEMP: 31°C

    Tulum, Cancún and Playa del Carmen are the seaside giants of the Yucatán in south-east Mexico, but head instead for the state capital of Mérida for the best of everything: Mayan ruins, a charming colonial town, dense jungle and – if you don’t mind a short drive – beaches, too. Best of all, there’s Chablé just outside the city, an astonishingly lush estate with a spa and private cenote, a restaurant led by renowned chef Jorge Vallejo, a tequila ‘library’, a sweat lodge and a local shaman. Plus it has 40 splashy, limestone-and-glass casitas, each one with its own terrace and pool.

    Where to stay: Hacienda Xcanatun for marble mosaic and coral stone floors on the verandahs, exteriors are daubed in terracotta and cream, and rough-hewn rustic tables and hammocks hung between trees that give this 18th-century Italianate estate a lived-in feel.

  • Getty Images

    Koh Samui, Thailand

    AVERAGE DECEMBER TEMP: 27°C

    Long the Shangri-La of feverish backpacker dreams, Koh Samui has grown up. Yes, its raison d’être remains pure pleasure – in the shade of three million coconut palms, and on its bone-white beaches – but the packaging is more Four Seasons, less ratty bungalow. Wellness has well and truly arrived here, with yoga studios, health retreats and even monk-led mentoring for those looking to make a real change. If, however, you just want a proper, idyllic tropical break, Panacea takes the cake. The former home of one of the world’s top hedge-fund managers, this sprawling hilltop estate features five enormous residences, 82ft swimming pools, a cinema, a nightclub – and even a Muay Thai boxing ring (tattooed instructor included).

    Where to stay: Set high on a hill, Panacea has a mix of four-, five- or six-bedroom villas filled with tropical hardwoods, silk fabrics and petrified wood that’s over a million years old, plus there’s a kids’ room, a private cinema, gambling den and nightclub. At COMO Point Yamu a 100-metre long white-tiled swimming pool shoots out towards the Andaman Sea. Tip-top service, zingy cuisine and a wondrous spa has made this Thai hotel a favourite with LGBTQ+ Thais and travellers.

    Cuba

    AVERAGE DECEMBER TEMP: 27°C

    No doubt, Havana is spectacular. But leaving Cuba’s main drawcard to explore its steamy eastern mountains will bring you closer to a country that, in its isolation from modernity, has much to teach. In Baracoa, the mystical hangs like a heavy mist. The city, surrounded by the Cuchillas del Toa mountain range, is a world unto itself: streets infused with music, sleepy beaches and rivers and canyons where – yes, even here – you’ll stumble upon the odd thatched bar. At the very south of the island, Santiago de Cuba, with its palatial Spanish buildings by the sea, is set to be the next It destination, but for now remains thrillingly tourist-free.

    Where to stay: Casa de Miriam y Sinai is a fantastic first-floor flat that is an oasis of calm and space, with three spacious rooms, one with a street-side balcony, are spotless and have top-drawer bathrooms.

    Melbourne, Australia

    AVERAGE DECEMBER TEMP: 24°C

    Melbourne’s erratic climate ensures it’ll never hold the beachy appeal of Sydney. But December’s summer temperatures are ideal for exploring the city’s beloved laneways: narrow passages packed with street art, galleries, restaurants and bars. It’s here that trends are set rather than followed; where a cup of coffee has both a caffeine kick and global acclaim. And in Australia’s always dynamic second city, there’s never a shortage of new and miraculous places to explore. Currently it’s Di Stasio Città, Spring Street’s Brutalist Italian restaurant, where guests eat fabulous crab capellini in a concrete-bunker-like setting as video installations play across the walls.

    Where to stay: Lindenderry at Red Hill, a silver-birch-lined drive leading to a white rural hideout, with comforting, pared-back style and a restaurant that uses the with best local produce.

Where is hot in December 2022 – and cheap

By Mark Hodson, Sunday Times Travel Writer

Q.  Where is hot for a holiday in December 2022?

A.
In December, when it’s icy cold in Britain, who wouldn’t want to jet off in search of sunshine? You can find warmer weather in the Canary Islands and Madeira. It’s a perfect time for Mauritius ,Dubai and Abu Dhabi and the Caribbean.

In terms of prices, December is a month of two halves. Travel in the first week or two and you may find a cheap deal. But once the schools break up for Christmas, long-haul destinations shoot up in price.

If you want to escape tinsel at home (or the in-laws) see our pick of the best Christmas holiday ideas. If you’re on your own, see our guide to the best solo holidays in December, and over Christmas.

These are my own personal recommendations with links to companies tested and approved by our team of editors and researchers.

Quick links

Under 4 hours flying – Caribbean – Under 7 hours flying – Indian Ocean – Asia – More long haul

Under 4 hours flying time

The Canary Islands enjoy a wonderful climate in winter. There are plenty of regional departures to Lanzarote, Tenerife and Gran Canaria where you can expect temperatures around 22°C and six hours of daily sunshine. Flying time is just four hours. Find the warmest Canary Islands in December.

It’s a similar picture in Madeira though this island is less about fly-and-flop package holidays and more about lovely hotels and traditional quintas, along with rolling hills, dramatic cliffs and hiking trails. British Airways has direct flights from Gatwick.

I also recommend Morocco (3 hours flying time) which offers warm sunny days (20ºC), though evenings can get chilly. This is a particularly satisfying time to explore Marrakech, not least for some cheap Christmas shopping and exotic spices to bring back home.

Also see our tips for the best city breaks in December and where is hot in Europe in December.

The Caribbean

December is a great time to visit the Caribbean. The hurricane season has passed and you can expect average highs of 30°C and nine hours of daily sunshine, with little humidity. If you go before the start of the school Christmas holidays, prices are significantly lower. As soon as peak season arrives, it gets expensive.

Most of the direct flights take seven to eight hours with plenty of onward connections to the smaller islands.

Check out our research team’s recommendations in Barbados, the Cayman Islands and Jamaica.

Warm Places to Visit in December in USA

Florida

When it comes to having some of the best options for warm places to visit in December in USA, Florida is hard to beat. The Sunshine State is one of the best places to visit in US in December, period! But… but — not every place in Florida is a prime destination during the winter.

Parts of North Florida and the Florida Panhandle can get snow and ice during late December and into January and February!

If temps in the 40s, 50s, 60s are good with you, then just about everywhere in Florida will work.

Luckily, the state is so big, you really have a great selection of places to go for the short sleeve, balmy, 70-80 degree weather you’re craving.

Florida from the central Gulf coast (Tampa, St. Pete, and Clearwater) down to southwest Florida and the Florida Keys offer many great options for great winter destinations.

Not only are these good places to visit year round, but visiting in the wintertime offers better wildlife viewing: migratory birds are typically back in the area, and eagles, osprey, and wading birds like herons, egrets, and roseate spoonsbills are abundant.

And the best part about Florida in the winter? Manatees are back in the springs keeping warm!

Fiery sunsets in Naples Florida

1. Naples

Average Winter High: 74-77°F

Located at the southwestern tip of Florida’s Gulf coast, the cities of Naples and Marco Island — collectively known as the Paradise Coast — are two great warm weather places to visit in the US if you want a warm and balmy tropical destination. Ahhh the paradise coast… sounds dreamy right?

This part of Florida is among the warmest places in the US in December!

Often known as one of Florida’s most upscale locales, there are plenty of things to see and do in Naples that everyone will enjoy. If you’re looking for a great Florida beach vacation, Naples has the warmest beaches in Florida in December — one for every day of the week.

If a pampered luxury getaway is more your speed, the options are truly endless with sublime spa treatments, culture and nightlife, and dining al fresco (yes, even in winter). Naples has over 700 amazing restaurants.

But given its proximity on the doorstep of the Florida Everglades, this part of Florida is a nature and outdoor lover’s paradise with unique hiking, boating, and wildlife galore.

Go early in December to enjoy the light display at the Naples Botanical Garden, Christmas boat parades, and catch a holiday performance at Artis Naples.

Where to Stay in Naples:

2. Marco Island

Average Winter High: 74-77°F

Just 15 minutes south of Naples Florida is its sister city of Marco Island on the Paradise Coast. But while it’s close by, the city of Marco Island is different from Naples in several ways. You can expect more of a quiet luxury community on Marco, if that’s the vibe you’re going for.

When it comes to beaches, you’ll have more of a selection in Naples than Marco, but Marco Island is closer to the Ten Thousand Islands and the Everglades for outdoor enthusiasts. In fact, Marco Island is the largest of the Ten Thousand Islands!

As for restaurants? The dining scene in Marco Island is equally good with everything from Italian to seafood and everything in between.

Where to Stay in Marco Island:

Planning a visit to Marco? You can’t go wrong with a stay at Marriott Crystal Shores resort. With direct access to South Marco Beach and great sunset views, the resort features 2 pools, a fitness center, restaurant and a long list of amenities.

3. Orlando

Average Winter High: 68-73°F

If you’ve been dreaming of Disney, Orlando offers one of the best warm winter vacations in the USA. And visiting in early December offers some of the smallest crowds of the year — don’t worry, Santa starts his Christmas visits early at Disney World, beginning the second week in November.

While Orlando may be landlocked between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, there are plenty of fun water activities and day trips you can take, from kayaking at Blue Spring State Park and taking in the beautiful holiday lights around Lake Eola in downtown Orlando including the Eola Wonderland 72–foot Christmas tree with a synchronized light and music show.

You’ll never be without a great Christmas celebration sometime in December. It’s what makes Orlando one of the best US winter destinations.

How about Grinchmas at The Islands of Adventure? Or the “Dazzling Nights” display at the Harry P. Leu Gardens that transform the gardens into a winter wonderland with over a million dazzling light displays, twinkling lights, and beautiful sculptures — nearly a mile long interactive holiday experience.

Where to Stay in Orlando:

Orlando may not have a beach on the ocean, but you can still feel the vibe with a stay at Universal’s Endless Summer Resort – Surfside Inn and Suites. The resort offers early admission to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ and Universal’s Volcano Bay water park, and provides complimentary transportation to Universal Orlando Resort’s 3 theme parks and Universal CityWalk.

If you need a beach fix, Clearwater has just what you need

4.

Clearwater

If you’re looking for a warm US winter vacation, Clearwater Florida is a great option for winter getaways.

Beach lovers should head to Honeymoon Island State Park, located about 25 minutes north of Clearwater Beach with four miles of stunning beaches to explore. It’s a great place to lounge in the sun, go swimming, fishing, biking, kayaking, or hiking along the 3-mile trail through one of the last remaining virgin slash pine forests.

Or, take the ferry across the channel to Caladesi State Park — it’s even less crowded and rocky than Honeymoon Island. On your way out, stop at Frenchy’s Outpost on the Dunedin Causeway for their Grouper sandwich. One bite and you just might start looking to pack up and move here.

Where to Stay in Clearwater:

Just opposite the sugary sand beach and featuring an outdoor heated pool among its many amenities, Pier House 60 Clearwater Beach Marina Hotel is only a 3 minute walk from premier dining and shopping, and just over a mile from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Swimming with manatees in Crystal River is one of the best warm winter vacations in USA

6. Crystal River

Average Winter High: 74°F

You may not have heard of this small city in Florida but no doubt you’ve heard of its most famous activity. Crystal River is one of the most popular warm winter destinations in the US for one, very large, reason… the return of its most famous resident, the West Indian manatee!

Located on Central Florida’s central Gulf Coast, Crystal River sits on Florida’s Nature Coast. The city and the surrounding area is full of small, natural warm springs, found commonly throughout central Florida’s limestone shelf. The springs bubble up from below and remain a constant 72°F, offering manatees a warm sanctuary when the Gulf of Mexico turns cold in December.

But the best part is, Crystal River offers visitors a chance to get in the water (wetsuits required!) and swim alongside the manatees to passively observe these gentle creatures in their natural habitat.

It’s one of the coolest warm places in the US to visit throughout winter — December, January, and February too.

Don’t want to get in the water to see them? No worries. Visit Three Sisters Spring in downtown Crystal River and stroll the elevated boardwalk that surrounds the spring. You’ll sometimes see hundreds of manatees huddled together keeping warm in the crystal blue water.

Where to Stay in Crystal River:

Situated on 232 acres close to King’s Bay, the Plantation on Crystal River, Ascend Hotel Collection features a 27 hole championship golf course, a spa, a cool poolside Tiki bar, and 4 on-site restaurants.

The city of Fort Myers has incredible turn of the century history having been a favorite summer residence of Thomas Edison and his friend Henry Ford, and their homes are must see attractions in Fort Myers. Smathers Beach in Key West

8. Key West, Florida

Average Winter High: 77°F

If you are looking for one of the best winter destinations with an island feel and a lively social scene, Key West may be the perfect place for you.

Located at the very end of the beautiful Florida Keys, Key West is officially the Southernmost City in the USA, making it the warmest place in US in December — probably January and February too — outside the US Virgin Islands.

It’s a tropical outpost party atmosphere waiting to happen — it can be loud and raucous or as laid-back as you want, it’s really up to you. That’s the beauty of the Conch Republic.

Getting to Key West is easy, and a few ways are even more adventurous. You can fly directly into Key West from anywhere in the US. Or take the 3-hour high speed catamaran ferry from southwest Florida called the Key West Express.

But for the adventure of your entire winter, take a road trip! The Miami to Key West drive is something every traveler should do in their lifetime, and the journey itself can be the destination!

There’s lots to do in Key West from the touristy to the hidden gems fewer travelers discover. Head to Duval Street to do your own self-guided pub crawl — known as the Duval Crawl — from one famous watering hole to the next. Or get off Duval and wander the side streets of Old Town to the Key West Cemetery and check out the headstones. In the evening, head to Mallory Square for the daily evening sunset celebration.

Where to Stay in Key West:

Simonton Court Historic Inn & Cottages is one of our favorite places to stay in Key West. Whether on your honeymoon or just getting away from it all this quiet resort in the heart of Old Town is the perfect stay! This is an adults only resort offering a complimentary continental breakfast, 4 onsite pools, and is an easy walk to Duval Street. Click here to book your stay.

Nevada

View of the Seven Sisters from scenic Valley of Fire State Park near Las Vegas, Nevada

9. Las Vegas

Average Winter High: 59-66°F, Average Low 40-44°F

If you’re looking for a little more adult action in your warm winter break, there’s always Vegas! And if you haven’t been there in a while, well, it ain’t what it used to be.

Las Vegas is still the playground it always was, only now it’s so much more than casinos and gaming, and very family-friendly (for the most part). While the night are considerably cold, the desert is sunny during the day and perfect for 18 holes of golf and high-end shopping. But for the adventurous travelers, the best parts about Las Vegas lie outside the city.

Go boating at Lake Mead Recreational Area or visit the Hoover Dam. There’s great hiking in the Red Rock National Conservation Area just west of the city. This is just one of the attractions in the Mojave Desert, known for its towering red sandstone peaks and Native American petroglyphs.

Just south of Hoover Dam and the town of Henderson you’ll find some incredible outdoor activities too, including a trail of hot springs that can actually soak in that will keep you busy for days.

If you’re going around the holidays, the Las Vegas Motor Speedway has an amazing light display, and the Las Vegas Festival Of Lights at Craig Ranch Park is a must-see!

Where to Stay in Las Vegas:

You can relax at Desert Paradise Resort and still be just a short drive to the Strip and Fremont Street. A great location with spacious suites that include a laundry and a full kitchen, an adult pool, a family pool and whirlpool, and a long list of amenities will make your stay comfortable and convenient.

Holidays in the 2021-2022 school year at school: autumn, winter, spring, summer

From year to year there are proposals to shorten or move the beginning of the school year. Komsomolka found out how schoolchildren rest and how long will the holidays last in the 2021-2022 academic year

Ksenia Konyukhova

Journalist “KP”

TalentTech digital education development area,
founder of Foxford online school

So far, the three summer months of rest remain untouched. We are sorting out what the school vacation schedule will be like in the 2021-2022 academic year in order to plan holidays with the whole family in advance.

Quarters or trimesters?

Many schools are now moving from traditional quarters to trimesters. At the same time, according to the law, study and vacation time are equal in them, but vacation days are distributed unevenly throughout the year.

With the traditional quarter system , each of the four quarters ends with vacations. Before the holidays, grades are given, and schoolchildren with a clear conscience go to rest.

The disadvantage of this system is that the quarters are very unequal. The second flies by, you won’t have time to look back. And if a child gets sick for a couple of weeks, problems arise: how to evaluate him in subjects that go, say, once a week.

The third quarter, on the contrary, is very protracted. Pupils get tired, get sick a lot and come to the finish just exhausted.

“Most schools in Russia study according to the classical quarter system,” comments Alexey Polovinkin, CEO of TalentTech digital education development, founder of Foxford online school. – It can hardly be called ideal, because it distributes the teaching load unevenly: the third quarter lasts as much as 11 weeks, and the second and fourth – seven. It turns out that with such a system, a quarter is either too long, like the third, or too short, like the second. The child either just got involved in work, as the holidays come, or he studies with his last strength and waits for rest. Of course, if this system did not have positive aspects, so many schools would not choose it. One of them is the completion of the quarter by grading. The child understands that he has worked, sees the result and goes to rest. Another plus is that if the child is studying at an art, sports or music school, then the holidays will coincide.

modular and trimester systems are deprived of these shortcomings – when the academic year is divided into equal intervals. With a modular system, this is 5 weeks of training, followed by a week of vacation. With a trimester – three months, that is, two modules of five weeks each with holidays in between.

The shortcomings of the trimester system include the fact that vacations do not become the logical conclusion of the study period, as in the quarter system. Where you did your best, got good grades for a quarter – and walk boldly. Under the trimester system, children can go to school on Monday, and they will be given trimester grades on Wednesday, since the next school period ends on Wednesday. But, on the other hand, it motivates you to take a more responsible attitude to your studies throughout the year, and not just before the end of the study period.

“Trimester education looks more comfortable for schoolchildren,” says Alexey Polovinkin. – In five weeks, the guys do not have time to get tired, but there is another problem: as soon as they tune in to study, the holidays come – and the cycle repeats again. Junior and middle school students are unlikely to realize this, but high school students who are determined to enter, feel it more sharply. Compared to quarters, there is a feeling of incompleteness, because the assessment is set at the end of the trimester (after three months).

Holidays for children during the school year become longer, and this is inconvenient for parents who do not have the opportunity to take their child during school breaks. Not every employer will allow you to take a vacation every five weeks. But children rest more evenly, the incidence decreases in the spring. And there are more grades in each training period, so even if the child missed a week or two, he will certainly be certified.

the result of his work, but he manages to accumulate a sufficient number of grades for objective certification for the trimester. Children usually like the fact that they leave for the New Year holidays without grades. If suddenly they did not study as well as they would like, they will still have time to correct everything, and the holidays will pass without thinking about bad grades. Another plus for children is a more objective annual mark. For example, if a child has two fours and two fives in the quarters, then it remains to be seen what the teacher decides to put. With the trimester system, there are no such fluctuations, because there are three final marks.

Despite the external similarity of the modular and trimester training systems, there are significant differences between them, which relate to both the curriculum and the peculiarities of the distribution of rest time.

— A modular system involves deep immersion in one or more related subjects over a certain period, such as a month, says Alexey Polovinkin. – It is more common in private or profile schools, where they experiment with teaching formats more often. You almost never meet her in an ordinary school, because it is difficult to organize a rotation of teachers here. From the point of view of the quality of education, it is more effective: schoolchildren show a higher percentage of residual knowledge. There is an explanation for this. Imagine that at work you need to complete tasks not for one or two projects, but for 6-7 every day. Tomorrow – 6-7 others, and they will also alternate: some must be performed once a week, some – three times. Can you switch and do each equally effectively? Hardly.

In the modular system, education often continues until July, which means that the summer holidays are shortened by a month. Thus, the load during the school year is distributed more evenly. There is a positive moment in this, because the summer holidays in Russia are very long. When compared with European countries, only schoolchildren in Italy and Bulgaria also have a rest for 14-16 weeks in the summer. This has a detrimental effect on the concentration of children. To maintain tone, parents try to send their children to camps or summer schools.

There is also training for bimester . But it is not very common in Russia. In the Moscow region, for example, there are only a couple of such schools. There are 5 training modules for 7 weeks. There are 2 weeks between them. And summer holidays are shorter. Schoolchildren study in June inclusive.

We remind you that the total number of rest days is the same for all systems. This is 30 days during the school year (for first graders – 35 days) and three months in the summer.

Summer holidays for elementary school students usually start on 24 (25) May. But older children and those who have a trimester system at school study longer – until June 1. Pupils 9and 11 classes because of the GIA and the Unified State Examination study until the beginning of July.

The school will decide when the holidays are. This decision is made at a meeting of the governing council, which includes not only teachers and administration, but also representatives of parents and the students themselves.

The Ministry of Education (formerly the Ministry of Education and Science) usually publishes recommended vacation schedules for different educational systems, which take public holidays into account. But the school can adjust this schedule to suit its needs – for example, holidays can start a couple of days earlier or later.

Therefore, it is better to look for the final schedule of vacations and holidays adopted by the school on its official website – it should be published no later than September.

Vacation schedule for those who study in quarters

Traditionally, schoolchildren who study in quarters rest for 7 days in autumn and spring and two weeks in winter. Taking into account the New Year and the November holidays, the school administration may add two more days to the autumn or winter holidays.

The approximate vacation schedule is as follows:

  • Autumn holidays – from October 25 to October 31, 2021.
  • Winter holidays – from December 27, 2021 to January 9, 2022.
  • Spring break – March 21-27, 2022.

There are additional holidays for first-graders – they will be held from February 7 to 13. This is necessary in order to dose the load and not to overwhelm the baby with studies from head to toe. Such additional vacations will help those who are lagging behind catch up with the rest, and those who are already doing well with their studies can simply take a breath.

Vacation schedule for those who study in semesters or modules

The vacation schedule for these systems is almost the same, but each school can make adjustments to it. Typically, a module or semester is designed for 5-6 weeks, after which there is a week of vacation.

The schedule of modular or trimester holidays will be something like this:

  • Autumn holidays: from 4 to 10 October and from 15 to 21 November 2021.
  • Winter holidays will also be held twice – from December 27, 2021 to 9January 2022, and from 14 to 20 February 2022.
  • Spring break alone – from 4 to 10 April 2022.

    For trimesters, the schedule will be essentially the same. Under this system, the year is divided into three academic parts (autumn, winter and spring), with holidays in between and an additional week of rest in the middle of each trimester.

        More details

        Is it possible to change the holiday schedule?

        If parents want to spend more time with their child on vacation and give him a better rest, it’s okay to be a day or two late for school. In the first days of classes, teachers specifically do not give any serious workload in order to help students tune in to study and switch to work mode. The main thing is to find out the homework for the missed days, so as not to start a new quarter (or semester) with deuces.

        If the problem is much deeper and the parents see that the child is barely able to cope with the academic load, it is worth considering changing the schedule. Most often this is noticeable at the end of the third quarter when studying according to the traditional system. For this period, unfortunately, the most difficult topics in the program fall, and the lack of sun and vitamin deficiency exacerbate the picture. Trimesters and modules are simpler in this regard – there are no such long study periods and the time for rest comes earlier.

        You can discuss the transition to another system of education at the parent meeting at the school, as well as by contacting the school’s governing board directly. The decision is made after discussion and general voting. In order to correctly substantiate your position, it is better to discuss this idea with other parents of students and teachers, and stock up on support from them.

        Expert opinion

        Lyudmila Akovantseva, educational psychologist at the District Center for Psychological, Medical and Social Support of the Moscow Department of Education:

        — Different schedules have pros and cons. With a modular system, children study and rest evenly, study and vacations begin on Monday. The guys do not have time to get very tired. But sometimes parents have to wonder what to do with the child so that he does not sit all week in front of the TV. The advantage of quarters is that they are more familiar to most parents, and theaters, entertainment facilities, as well as music schools, circles are guided in their schedule so far by them. But during the long third quarter, the students get very tired, there is even a special term “third quarter syndrome”.

            Many children, and parents too, what is there to hide, dream of the beginning of a long New Year’s weekend, better known as winter holidays. When? – the question of the date eats away many. In particular, people who are still planning their New Year’s trips and do not know which date to take tickets for. How long the holidays will last is also an important question, there are stories on the Web about the extension of the winter holidays right up to February 1 due to the new strain of the Omicron coronavirus.

            Photo: AGN “Moscow”

            In Moscow, according to the schedule, the official start date of the holidays is December 30, December 31 is a holiday. But, as is often the case, the date may vary at the discretion of the schools. Somewhere they immediately announced that studies would end by the 30th, in other places they are pulling rubber – no certainty.

            – Our nanny asks us to tell you exactly when the last day of school is so that she can get a ticket to her homeland. She is not a Muscovite, she lives near Kursk, – says the schoolgirl’s mother Anna Metelkina. – I called the class teacher, she talks about the 30s, but somehow evasively. Lord, I had to find out in a roundabout way, through acquaintances in the school administration, that the last school day, in fact, will be on the 24th! And the “tail” in the week from the 27th is attending school at the request of the parents. This has been decided in our school for a long time.

            Echoed by Anna and Valentina Pines, mother of a Moscow 9th grader. Her child for the first time in his life is going on a winter trip to Karelia and also does not know what date to take tickets for.

            “I’m so afraid that his trip will fail,” the mother worries about the grown child. – For the first time he became seriously interested in something, he even saved up money for a ticket. He travels with a friend who is a hiker, there they have a group of 12 people plus an instructor. And they all sit on backpacks and do not know which date to take tickets for. But there will be an influx of trips within the country this year as well. ..

            Official holidays in Moscow will start on December 30th and end on January 9th, children go to school on the 10th. In St. Petersburg, the holidays will officially last from December 29 to January 11, to school on the 12th. But in the Leningrad region, holidays will begin on December 25 by order of the governor Alexander Drozdenko. This decision was made due to the unfavorable situation regarding the coronavirus. In the Moscow region, holidays – from December 31, in some areas of the region – from December 29.

            In the Tula and Sverdlovsk regions, children will officially leave for the New Year holidays on December 25th. The same is true in the Stavropol Territory – the holidays will start a week earlier. Of course, the authorities of these regions associate this decision with a high level of coronavirus diseases. However, at the same time, parents will be allowed to attend preschool and school New Year’s parties and holidays if they have QR codes or a negative PCR test. But in Moscow, parents will not be allowed to go on holidays under any circumstances.

            Holidays in Tatarstan will start on December 29th. In Bashkortostan – from the 29th for those who study quarters and from 30 for the “trimesters”, which is probably a shame. For other cities and towns there is no official information yet. This uncertainty worries teachers as well. Teachers are people too, they want to relax. The streak of dates in the regions forces teachers to share information from their school magazines with each other. “In the Rostov region – until December 24.” “From the 25th to the holidays, Chelyabinsk.” “From 25.12. Chrysostom. “Murmansk from December 28 for students, but each school makes its own vacation schedule. Teachers from 31.12. “And here in Novosibirsk until 29.12 have so far been announced.” “Karelia, Sortavala, December 24 is the last day of school.” “Samara region – from December 29 to January 11. Yes, I just dream about it…”, the teachers report on the “wall”.

            Both parents and teachers are actively discussing among themselves the rumor about the extension of the New Year holidays until February 1st. But after digging around on the web, I managed to find its source. This is a satirical site that now and then releases stuffing, which many, however, are taken seriously. So, the extension of the New Year holidays has not yet been seriously discussed anywhere. There is no question even of an extension until January 14th instead of January 11th, as some suggest. Fatigue, of course, fatigue, but, as one of the teachers wrote: “According to the plan, will we study this year, in general? ..”

            If the legislator had asked our readers’ advice about the number of holidays and weekends, he would have had a hard time: opinions were divided.

            Someone is suggesting that any holiday vacation be shortened, because prices for entertainment usually rise at this time and not everyone can afford such a holiday anyway. And for some, the holidays are an opportunity to relax between vacations throughout the year and not burn out. Collected all points of view in one collection.

            Complete nonsense to rest in May for 10 days. You need to work, work. In my opinion, Russia has the largest number of holidays compared to other countries. It is a pity that on holidays the prices for flights and hotels are too high.

            With the current level of average income and aspirations, both New Year and May holidays should be reduced. Beyond the CADs, in fact, there is life too. There, no one skis in Sochi and spends extra days in Bali due to holidays. But people skip the stash, fall into a mayonnaise coma and watch the telly to the holes.

            New Year holidays – from December 31 to January 3. And in May, attach Friday and Monday to one weekend. Do not need anymore.

            Three or four days, no more. And so the weekends are in bulk – it feels like we are living in a continuous holiday: New Year’s, May, February 23, March 8 and others. No time to work.

            Goddess of Decay I don’t understand those who are against it: they themselves are workaholics and don’t give life to others. Shifts have been invented for really important work, but why do office workers interfere with you on vacation? For example, advertising or sales managers.

            I would add weekends in May at the expense of January. May is much better for relaxing: there are many places to go around the country and abroad. Well, gardeners can safely plant potatoes. In winter, holidays are good only for skiers, but how many of them do we have? And even then, all good European resorts are not available now.

            against abuse

            Shorten the New Year holidays to three or four days, lengthen the May holidays from May 1 to May 10.

            You can’t completely remove the New Year holidays: people not only hang out under the Christmas tree, but also see their loved ones for once, do some business at home. Someone is studying, preparing for a session, for professional exams – there are always not enough days off, everyday life is eating. Many people have a quality rest, since there is somewhere: a forest, a park, the sea, a trip to another region or country.

            We have a bad climate, December is the most difficult month, and winter has just begun. Not seeing the sun for weeks is a “pleasure” that almost the rest of the world is deprived of. And we live in twilight for four or five months a year. I am silent about the wild oak tree. Thus, people in our country vitally need a respite-reboot in the winter. Small, so that abuse does not slip.

            is indifferent to the New Year holidays

            January is a bad thing for me: it’s still not really possible to relax at this time. So, technically, it would be possible to reduce the New Year holidays to the interval from December 31 to January 3. Well, the fifth maximum.

            But the long May ones would not really hurt. Just because the idiotic breakdown of three working days between May Day and Victory Day is neither here nor there. Most people still take days off, work is not really done because of half of the absent participants. And at the same time, taking a vacation in May is again unprofitable. Well, it’s kind of stupid. It would be better if everyone had honest nine days of May rest. Albina Ponomareva

            chooses favor

            It would be ideal to have nine or ten days of rest in May, without working days in between. But the New Year, on the contrary, will be reduced to three – from December 31 to January 2. So the total number of days off will even be reduced, and the benefits will be much greater: there is still nothing much to do in January.

            thinks about gardeners

            I think that on New Year’s holidays you need to rest from December 31 of the old year to January 4 of the new year. January 5 – back to work. And on May holidays – as much as possible. These are the hottest days in terms of gardening: planting, digging, cleaning and just barbecue.

            How much does it cost to be a gardener? Many people go to other cities to visit their relatives or friends – in one day and the way, and the New Year is difficult. And on December 30, the majority already have completely non-working results and mood.

            And the May days need to be somehow arranged and not to tear the non-working days between May 1 and 9: this brings much more losses to the efficiency of the work itself than one might think. Four or five days, including weekends, is more than enough for barbecues, gardening, and country holidays.

            I am for longer vacations, otherwise holidays cause a sharp increase in prices and crowds of people.

            Ski resorts are expensive and there are queues, tickets from the country are exorbitantly expensive, all the more it was forbidden to leave Russia by car. My trip to the mountains for the New Year would be three times cheaper in February.

            But taking into account the fact that the vacation is only two times for 14 days, the optimal length of the New Year holidays is from December 31 to January 7-8. May want to make continuous, even from 3 to 9May.

            would be happy to work four days

            It always amazes me how people start to decide for others what to do. Come to your senses! The phrase “the whole country drinks on New Year’s holidays, let them work” sounds like “I’m super smart, the most correct, non-drinker and hard-working, but you all are not.” Do not decide for others and do not judge. If you want to make people better, start with yourself and your environment.

            If you have a lot of rest, don’t rest. Do something useful, read books, take courses, teach children to draw, or at least just play with them. And if you are such workaholics, so who forbids you – work.

            I would be happy if the working week were reduced to four days, so that there would be time not only for family and a bunch of things, but also a day could be allocated for study and self-education. From this, the work would only become better and more productive.

            Where to go with children in December

            What is the only word to describe December? “Holiday!” – some will say and immediately complain that behind the bustle of work there is no time to be in a pre-holiday mood.

            “Cold,” others shiver and straighten the child’s scarf. “Skiing,” the third will rejoice and look with distrust at the slush under their feet. “Fatigue,” the fourth will sigh: in the mornings, a child cannot be woken up to kindergarten, schoolchildren have control one after another, and summer vacation has already been forgotten.

            “Rest,” Kidpassage suggests and is ready to decipher his version. We recommend a holiday abroad in December for those who want to immerse themselves in a Christmas fairy tale.

            Rest in hot countries where palm trees whisper with the sea. Rest in the mountains, covered with snow, on which skis glide so intoxicatingly easily. And just rest – as an opportunity to forget about everyday life and be with your family.

            In order not to wonder where to go with children in December, use our selection of resorts. We have found where to relax for beach lovers, ski fans and all families who dream of seeing something new.

            Holidays with a child in December: pros and cons

            Beaches, excursions, amusement parks, skiing, holidays – vacation options in December abound . All of them are good to shake off fatigue and give the family a delightful New Year’s gift.

            With such a significant advantage, there are also disadvantages:

            • prices increase in December – due to the high season, because of the approaching holidays, because of vacations;
            • the road to popular seaside resorts can take a day or more;
            • there are a lot of vacationers in the resorts of Southeast Asia;
            • most ski resorts start the season only at the end of December;
            • on New Year’s Eve, all popular holiday destinations are overcrowded;
            • you need to book accommodation and buy tickets long before the trip.

            The good news is that there are ways to minimize the disadvantages. We figured out where it is better to relax in December with a child in order to enjoy the trip.

            Weather at popular resorts

            December is cold and snowy – a common occurrence. Such weather is set in high-mountain resorts, immensely pleasing skiers. In the Alps, good snow cover is formed at the end of December, but Stubai and Garmisch-Partenkirchen provide comfortable skiing from the first days of the month.

            Hot and sunny December is no longer surprising either. In Thailand, Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka, the Dominican Republic and Cuba, the rainy season has finally ended, and the heat there never weakens. Nice weather for a beach holiday comes in Egypt and the UAE.

            December with a slight frost is typical for many cities in Central and Eastern Europe. Usually the weather allows you to take a little walk, but it is better to supplement the recreation program with trips to museums.

            Sea and beach

            Not too long ago, vacations with children in December abroad began to mean vacations at seaside resorts. Summer in the middle of winter – why not a gift for the New Year? The beaches are loaded with exotic distant lands, new cuisine and cultural features.

            Safaga, Egypt

            You will like:

            • quiet resort near Hurghada;
            • moderate housing prices;
            • lack of coral near the shore;
            • suitable weather for an excursion to Luxor.

            Please note:

            • choice of hotels is relatively small;
            • not enough entertainment for children;
            • best family hotels are concentrated in Soma Bay.

            Those who do not like the heat prefer to spend their holidays in Egypt in winter. In Safaga, the December temperature ranges from +20°C to +25°C during the day and from +15°C to +20°C at night. At the same time, the sea is often warmer than the air: in early December, the water is warmed up to + 25-27 ° С, at the end it is never colder than + 23 ° С.

            Swimming is therefore pleasant, but sunbathing is not always. Despite the fact that the days are sunny, quite a strong wind brings discomfort. Protective screens that are installed on the beaches save from it.

            Beach activities are the main form of recreation in Safaga. The shore here is covered with dark healing sand, and an ordinary sunbath becomes a session of psammotherapy. The entrance to the water is smooth everywhere, the sea is mostly cleared of corals, but in some places you still need protective slippers.

            And the main plus of Safaga is calmness. He, however, has a reverse side – lack of entertainment .

            Vacationers usually go to Makadi Bay to relax in the best water park in Egypt Makadi Bay Water World, see the main attractions of the country in the Mini Egypt Park and get to the show at the Dolphinarium.

            But Safaga is the closest to Luxor, where the tombs of the ancient Egyptian nobility and temples of amazing beauty have been preserved.

            Safaga hotels are mostly unpretentious, so tourists prefer to stay near the resort, in Soma Bay. There are many family hotels with a decent range of services for children and the concept of “all inclusive”.

            Please note:

            • in the second half of the month the sea can be cool;
            • not all hotels offer all inclusive;
            • in terms of the number of entertainment, Abu Dhabi is inferior to Dubai.

            Coming to the capital of the United Arab Emirates in the summer means dooming yourself to sitting in a cool room and short outings in the evenings. Come in winter – enjoy the soft warmth, relaxation on the beach and excursions.

            In December, Abu Dhabi does not know the heat: thermometers show about +24-28°C during the day and +20-25°C at night, and sea water remains at a temperature of +24-25°C and only by the end of the month cools down to +22 -23°C.

            It doesn’t rain in the city, but a noticeable wind is a frequent phenomenon.

            December is the right time to travel if you want to do everything at once. In autumn it is still hot for excursions, in January-February it is cool for sea swimming, but at the beginning of winter the weather is conducive to any kind of rest.

            The beaches of Abu Dhabi are covered with fine sand , the bottom is clean and flat, the sea is usually calm and warm. If you are going on a trip in the second half of December and cannot imagine a vacation without swimming, it would be good to play it safe and find a hotel that has heated pools.

            And yet the main thing in this city is the abundance of attractions. What to attribute to them – the Sheikh’s Palace, Al Husn Fort, fantastic skyscrapers or the Ferrari World amusement park – depends only on your preferences.

            Kids will love Yas Waterworld and Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi.

            There are no problems with choosing good housing in Abu Dhabi. There are many respectable hotels located on the first coastline and apartments with different levels of comfort in the capital.

            The Corniche is considered the best area for a relaxing holiday; to be closer to entertainment, choose accommodation on Yas Island.

            Please note that in December it gets dark at 17:30-18:00. It dawns around 7:00.

            Cha Am, Thailand

            You will like:

            • quiet small resort;
            • children’s activities in Cha-Am and nearby;
            • budget, in comparison with other Thai resorts, rest;
            • direct buses from Bangkok airport.

            Please note:

            • there are relatively few services for children in hotels;
            • the room rate usually includes breakfast only;
            • hotels are usually separated from the sea by a road.

            The heat in Thai resorts lasts all year round, but because of the rainy season, it is not always possible to have a good rest. Cha-Am in December forgets about heavy rains – finally the sun shines over the resort, sometimes it is covered by clouds, and only a couple of times a month a short rain is possible.

            What to expect from the weather at the beginning of winter? The air temperature is kept at + 25-30 ° C during the day and + 23-25 ° C at night, the water temperature in the Gulf of Thailand is + 27-29 ° C. True, December is the windiest month, the wind speed reaches 4 m/s.

            The beaches of Cha-Am are good for relaxing with kids: the coast is covered with fine white sand, and the sea is very shallow, just right for little swimmers.

            Usually there are few tourists on the beaches, especially if you get out of the city center, but on weekends Cha-Am is flooded with Thais – this resort is very popular with them.

            Let’s add that the central beaches abound in entertainment, and the service sector is well established here. There are no cafes and rental points for umbrellas and sun loungers on the country beaches.

            There is not much to do in the resort, except for the amusement park with the water park Santorini Park. The neighboring Hua Hin will save you from boredom, where there are two large water parks, a zoo, an elephant nursery and much more.

            To feel the flavor of Thai nature, we recommend going to the Sam Roi Yot National Park – with mangrove forests, mountain trails, caves and lotuses growing in the swamp.

            There are no problems with the choice of housing in Cha-Am – there are decent hotels, apartments, and modest guesthouses. Resting in a small town is much cheaper than in the bustling resorts of Thailand.

            Phan Thiet, Vietnam

            You’ll like:

            • quiet resort for families with children;
            • good wind conditions for wind and kite surfing;
            • many charters to Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang.

            Please note:

            • the road from the airport takes 4-6 hours;
            • strong sea waves possible;
            • on the beach you can not sunbathe directly on the sand and walk barefoot on it.

            Palm trees, the beach, the sea, a nice hotel on the coast and summer in the middle of winter – this is all about Phan Thiet. Summer in the Vietnamese resort lasts all year, but by December, the rainy season is finally behind and sunny weather returns.

            The temperature stays at +30°С during the day and +25°С at night from day to day. Well, the water in the South China Sea is never colder than +26°C.

            On the sandy beaches of Phan Thiet, which stretch for 40 km, there is enough space for everyone. Entrance is free, the coast is quite clean, but changing rooms, showers, sun lounger rentals are not everywhere.

            On the other hand, there are many windsurfing centers in the resort, and just in winter there is a great wind for sliding on the waves. Waves, unfortunately, sometimes interfere with swimming. But if you come in early December with a child, there is a chance to find a calm and very clean sea.

            Let’s add that on the beaches of Vietnam there are biting insects known as sand fleas. Their bites are very unpleasant, and it is easy to protect yourself from them – do not lie directly on the sand and walk along the beach in shoes.

            There are special products that drive away fleas: they, like mosquito and fly repellents, are best bought directly in Vietnam.

            The choice of housing in Phan Thiet is huge, from expensive hotels and villas to budget guesthouses. There are no problems with catering either – in addition to establishments with local dishes, the resort has restaurants of European cuisine, pizzerias, etc.

            Goa, India

            You will like:

            • perfect weather for a beach holiday;
            • serenity on the beaches;
            • large hotels for families with children.

            Please note:

            • water parks and attractions are located in the north of Goa;
            • if you fly to Mumbai, it will take more than 10 hours to get to the resort by train;
            • in the south near the hotels, as a rule, there are no shops.

            In Goa, December is by no means the hottest month, although the temperature at this time does not fall below +30°C during the day and +22°C at night. There is no rain in winter, no clouds – the sun is hot and calling to swim, since the temperature of the Arabian Sea is + 27-29°C.

            South Goa is usually chosen for a trip with a child to the sea in December. This is a quiet part of the state with long beaches and good hotels.

            The beaches are often located in bays, due to which there are almost no waves on the sea. Entertainment on the beach is a rarity, but sun loungers, awnings and small restaurants are everywhere.

            There are no difficulties with the choice of housing either. In the south of Goa there are status “five”, a lot of “triple” and an infinite number of villas, apartments and guesthouses of different levels.

            When choosing a budget accommodation, it is very important to study the reviews of the guests. Let us clarify that in the southern resorts, hotels are often located far from shops and entertainment.

            How to complement lying on the beach? With kids, you can visit one of the reserves, where the jungle is real, and the animals are very close. Older children will be interested in the ancient fortresses and ethnographic museums of Goa Chitra and Big Foot.

            Negombo, Sri Lanka

            You’ll like:

            • nearest airport resort;
            • sparsely populated beaches;
            • abundance of attractions nearby;
            • more pleasant prices for rental housing and transport than in the south of Sri Lanka.

            Please note:

            • the central beach of Negombo is the least comfortable;
            • the closer to the end of December, the less often it rains;
            • not everywhere there are services for families with children.

            There are resorts where tourists sunbathe even during the rainy season. In Sri Lanka, this number will not work: the downpours here are such that you can’t stick your nose out into the street. But the rains are unlikely to interfere with a beach holiday with children in December – they are still possible, but they go mostly at night.

            During the day the sun shines, sometimes clouds run over it, but the temperature stays at +29-30°C. And what is the water in the Indian Ocean! + 27-28 ° С – children cannot be lured ashore.

            In the popular resort of Negombo, the beaches are sandy and usually half empty. The entrance to the water is relatively gentle, but sometimes swimming is prevented by high waves. And vice versa, waves and wind attract windsurfers here – the resort has surf stations and equipment rentals.

            “Fives” and “fours” on the first coastline – a frequent choice for families with children. Usually in such hotels there is a playground for small tourists.

            Meanwhile, many travelers stay in apartments and guesthouses, of which there are countless in Negombo.

            The resort is not rich in entertainment, but only an hour’s drive from Colombo, and immediately there is a choice – Water World Lanka Aquarium, Maritime Museum, National Museum of Colombo . You can also visit the Dehiwale Zoo.

            LeisureWorld is also located an hour from Negombo. If you are ready to travel a lot, we recommend visiting the medieval city of Polonnaruwa, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and Kumana National Park.

            Boca Chica, Dominican Republic

            You will like:

            • only 12 km from the airport;
            • picturesque beaches;
            • always very calm, shallow and warm sea;
            • good hotels and apartments.

            Please note:

            • hotels are rarely located right on the beach;
            • the nearest water park is located 2 hours away;
            • excursions will be interesting for older children.

            Who was waiting for the end of the rainy season in the Dominican Republic, then waited: you can safely go to the sea in December with children. In Boca Chica, in winter, the temperature is within + 26-30 ° C during the day and + 20-23 ° C at night, the water in the Caribbean Sea is very warm, not less than + 27 ° C. The sun sometimes hides behind clouds, but it rains very rarely.

            People go to this resort for the beaches of incredible beauty and complete peace. Just imagine: a lagoon fenced off from the sea by a coral reef, an ideally calm, transparent, shallow sea, fine white sand, palm trees, reed umbrellas – thoughts about work and study instantly disappear from your head.

            Hotels without a category, but with a decent service – a characteristic feature of the Dominican Republic. In Boca Chica, housing is rarely located right on the beach, but it is usually a few minutes of leisurely walk from the beach.

            Some places have services for children, some hotels offer an all-inclusive concept. An apartment or a room in an apart-hotel can be a convenient option – there will definitely be cafes, restaurants and grocery stores nearby.

            For those who are afraid of getting bored in this idyll, let’s add that the Dominican Republic is very interesting for active travelers. Here is amazing nature, original architecture, special customs.

            The main bait – whales playing in the ocean – appears closer to January.

            Varadero, Cuba

            You will like:

            • well-maintained sandy beach and calm, clear sea;
            • no heat;
            • modern hotels on the first line.

            Please note:

            • there may be poisonous physalia on the coast after a storm;
            • light jackets or sweaters are useful on vacation;
            • the level of hotels does not always correspond to their star rating.

            Cuba is not a typical place for holidays with children in December by the sea. No, the weather here is beautiful: + 25-28 ° C during the day and + 20-23 ° C at night, the water in the Caribbean Sea is warmed up to + 26-27 ° C, and partly cloudy contributes to beach bliss and excursions.

            And the beaches on the island are amazing: in Varadero, the sandy beach stretches for 20 km, the sea is shallow near the coast and very clean.

            But Cuba itself, whose name until recently was deciphered with irony as “Communism off the coast of America”, is an unimaginable mixture of luxury and poverty.

            However, this is not noticeable everywhere. The resort of Varadero is quite respectable, with modern hotels and apartments, good restaurants, shops and even a golf club.

            An important plus is the presence of family-oriented hotels. However, after examining the list of services, still check if there is a disco or a night club nearby.

            In order not to have a monotonous vacation, we advise you to visit the Varadero Dolphinarium and Josone Park, visit the local historical museum or get out to Cardenas, where a museum works at the sugar cane processing factory (they tell about the production of sugar and rum).

            Be careful: after a storm, physalia, or Portuguese boats, wash up on the shore. You can not touch them – they leave a painful burn.

            Alpine skiing

            Cold and snow are not always a disadvantage. Those who like to slide on fresh snow on their skis are rushing the onset of winter to finally open the season. Here are a few options for where to go on vacation in December with a child in order to devote maximum time to skiing.

            Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany

            You will like:

            • bus service to Munich and Innsbruck airports;
            • a rich program of recreation with children;
            • family hotels.

            Please note:

            • each ski area has a separate ski pass;
            • it takes 1.5 hours to get to the Zugspitze plateau;
            • there are a lot of people in the resort during the Christmas and New Year period.

            Where to fly with a child in December to get into a real snowy winter, only without severe frosts? In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, snow has been lying since November, and the temperature ranges from +5°C to -3°C during the day and from -2°C to -10°C at night.

            In the first days of winter, the resort blooms with bright skiers’ clothes, but the real excitement will begin closer to Christmas (approximately from December 22), and before that you can safely ski.

            For skiing with children, the Garmisch Classic area is usually chosen, where there are many easy tracks, ski schools for children from 3-5 years old and a children’s park. Meanwhile, the famous Kandahar downhill is also located here, a difficult track on which the Alpine Skiing World Cup competitions are held.

            The Zugspitze plateau, Germany’s highest point , is dominated by red pistes, but there are also blue pistes for those new to skiing. This area is very popular, even though it takes an hour and a half to get there from the villages.

            But more importantly, the resort offers more than just skiing. There is a lot of entertainment for children (let’s mention at least long sledge tracks), a lot of beauty (which is only worth the painted facades in GaPa itself and in the village of Oberammergau) and many attractions (in an hour you can get to the Swarovski Museum in Innsbruck and Neuschwanstein Castle).

            Stubai, Austria

            You will like:

            • one of the best family resorts in the Alps;
            • free ski passes for children under 10;
            • close location to Innsbruck airport.

            Please note:

            • in the resort 60 km of slopes, of which in the Schlick 2000 zone – 22 km;
            • to ride on the Schlick 2000 slopes, it is advisable to settle in Fulpmes;
            • The Stubai Glacier is easier to reach from Neustift.

            Holidays with children in Austria in December are usually devoted to skiing. However, in many resorts the season begins only at the end of the month, but Stubai has been open since November.

            The slopes of the Stubai resort are located at high altitude – from 1000 to 3210 meters.

            Accordingly, by December, the mountains are covered with a thick snow blanket: this applies not only to the Stubai Glacier, where the snow does not melt all year round, but also to the popular Schlick-2000 ski area – it is located next to the hotels, and there is a children’s park.

            True, in Stubai you need to be prepared for extreme cold. With an average temperature of about +2°C during the day and -6°C at night, frosts up to -12-15°C are possible, and sometimes the temperature drops below -20°C.

            Stubai is a classic Austrian resort with impeccable infrastructure. German ski guide ADAC calls it one of the best resorts for families with children. There are excellent conditions for putting the child on skis, full-fledged family hotels and a lot of entertainment for the whole family.

            At the same time, there are relatively few slopes in Stubai, when compared with the powerful centers of Salzburgerland, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Gastein, etc. However, here you can ski from the very first days of December, while in other resorts the season opens later.

            Bansko, Bulgaria

            You will like:

            • very beautiful and cozy town;
            • modern ski infrastructure;
            • inexpensive ski passes.

            Please note:

            • season opens in the second half of December;
            • ski school accepts children from 6 years old;
            • at the beginning of the season, the ski bus may not run (it is better to settle closer to the ski lifts).

            Rest with a child in December in Bulgaria is not nonsense at all, it’s just that ski resorts are now in focus instead of seaside resorts. The Pirin Mountains soon pass under the power of winter.

            In December, there is already snow here, during the day the thermometers show from +5°С to -5°С, and at night it can be -3°С, and -15°С. If you are planning a trip in the second half of December, then 75 km of prepared slopes will be waiting for you on the slopes of the Bansko resort, equally for beginners and experienced skiers.

            Bansko is chosen for holidays with children in December, because there is a lot of snow, there is a children’s campus, and ski passes are much cheaper than in Austria or Germany.

            In addition, the Bulgarian resort is relatively sparsely populated – tourists come to the mountains closer to the new year, and then the hotels really run out of rooms, and there is a queue near the ski lift.

            Entertainment for children in Bansko is mainly provided by hotels – many have playrooms, swimming pools, mini-clubs.

            Let’s add that the resort has everything for independent rest: apartments and apart-hotels, grocery stores, restaurants with national cuisine.

            Excursion rest

            One can argue until hoarse where it is better to have a rest with children in December. If you don’t like lazy lying on the beach and being too active in winter resorts, why not make an excursion program?

            Snow-covered Europe, Santa Claus’ possessions in the Arctic, many-sided Asia – in winter there is a place to go with the whole family.

            Prague

            You will like:

            • festive atmosphere and Christmas markets;
            • museums that are interesting for both adults and children;
            • large selection of hotels and apartments.

            Please note:

            • the weather in December can be wet and windy;
            • the closer to Christmas, the higher the prices for flights and hotels;
            • in the Old Town is very noisy.

            Residents of Prague complain that more and more Christmas is celebrated without snow. But this does not sadden travelers – the positive temperature and, if you’re lucky, the dry pavement is much more suitable for walking.

            The beginning of winter in Prague is relatively warm: during the day the temperature rises to +3-8°С, at night it fluctuates from +3°С to -4°С. Despite this, it is better to dress warmly on a December trip – the sun rarely shows up from behind the clouds, sometimes a damp wind blows.

            Why does this bother tourists a little? Firstly, because Prague hosts amazingly beautiful Christmas markets.

            When you have a warm, freshly baked trdelnik in your hands, and a nativity scene with real animals nearby, and holiday hymns sound, and the Christmas tree lights up, the cold does not bother you at all.

            Secondly, there are many museums in Prague where the whole family can visit. The most interesting place, perhaps, is the Kingdom of Railways Museum, which depicts the regions of the Czech Republic.

            Equally interesting are the National Technical Museum and the Lego Museum. The secrets and legends of the Czech capital come to life in the Museum of Alchemists and Magicians.

            In fine weather, we recommend stopping by the town hall, where at the beginning of every hour the Prague Eagle (clock tower) shows a mini-performance.

            In Prague, you can easily find a good hotel or apartment, but for a holiday in December, you need to book accommodation in advance – before Christmas the city is full of tourists.

            Rovaniemi

            You will like:

            • Santa’s residence;
            • wonderful museums dedicated to the history and culture of Finland;
            • own major airport;
            • the opportunity to stay in a city hotel or in a cottage in the middle of the forest.

            Please note:

            • in December the sun is only visible for an hour;
            • it is necessary to book accommodation well in advance of the trip;
            • supermarkets and restaurants are concentrated in the city center.

            All children know that Santa Claus lives in cold Lapland beyond the Arctic Circle. But not even all adults know that he receives guests, and it is easiest to get to him from Rovaniemi.

            In Santa’s Village, you can ride a reindeer and dog sled, learn how to bake gingerbread, study at the elf school, send a postcard from the magic mail and meet the magician grandfather himself. The village is open all year round, but in December there is a special atmosphere.

            Moreover, in December, Rovaniemi is covered by the polar night – it is dark here almost around the clock. But on December 6, the Finnish Independence Day, the darkness is dispersed by the light of torches, with which the inhabitants of the city go to the church.

            On December 23, the townspeople greet Santa, who sets off on a sleigh loaded with gifts, and there is always plenty of light and fun.

            Rovaniemi also has original museums. In the Arktikum Museum, for example, they staged a theater of northern lights. In December, Arktikum holds a fair where they offer products made from traditional Sami materials, including deer antler and skins.

            Holidays in December with a child can be supplemented by skiing – there are several easy slopes in the city. It is no less interesting to walk through the forest on snowshoes.

            True, the cold in Rovaniemi is severe. The temperature can drop to -16-20°C, although it often stays at -5-12°C.

            You will like:

            • a large number of flights;
            • plenty of family entertainment;
            • the opportunity to combine sightseeing and beach holidays.

            Please note:

            • December in Bangkok is the peak of the high season;
            • Sunscreen and hat required for walking;
            • before Christmas and New Year, the flow of tourists becomes even greater.

            The main city of Thailand, oddly enough, in December is also preparing for the celebration of Christmas. But not for the sake of this, tourists come here, but for the sake of exoticism, Buddhist temples and unthinkable entertainment. And definitely there is a place for families with children.

            How to get started in Bangkok? From the Grand Royal Palace and Wat Prakaeo if you are interested in Buddhist culture. From Dusit Zoo or Siam Ocean World if you want to learn about the local flora and fauna.

            From Dream World and Siam Park City if you’re looking for the ultimate in fun. From the interactive science museum and the Ancient Siam Park, if you like to learn something new on vacation.

            All the fun is facilitated by good weather. It rains very rarely in December, although the sky frowns from time to time, and thermometers show + 25-35 ° C during the day and + 20-30 ° C at night.

            Humidity is low and the heat is not particularly bothersome.

            In Bangkok, you can stay for two or three days if you are planning a vacation at one of the seaside resorts. For example, from the capital in a few hours you can get by train to Hua Hin and Cha Am, where the beach season is already in full swing.

            It is best to go to Bangkok in early December, because by Christmas the flow of tourists increases many times over. Pratunam is considered the best area for families with children: there are convenient transport links, good infrastructure, and many budget hotels.

            Europa-park closes in November to reopen by December – and not just reopen the attractions, but stun guests with a special winter program.

            Traditional Christmas market opens here with gingerbread, gluwine, souvenirs and chants. There is an exhibition of ice sculptures. A fluffy spruce is burning with lights here.

            There is an ice rink and a children’s ski school. In general, everything is done in the park to make you feel the festive atmosphere long before the holiday.

            Of course, attractions are also open in December – only water activities are not available. Well, the main attraction, probably, should be called the fact that the territory of Europa-park represents different countries of Europe.

            On the steep Eurosat roller coaster – CanCan Coaster you will ride in “France”, on the Bellevue ferris wheel – in “Portugal”, and whirl on the Mül-Müls carousel and even in the fabulous land of minimotes.

            Ramoji Film City, India

            You will like:

            • tour of the largest film city in the world;
            • a variety of children’s entertainment;
            • room for parents with babies.

            Please note:

            • there is a paid shuttle from several cities in India;
            • it is advisable to book tickets in advance;
            • the park is always very crowded.

            Children probably don’t know anything about Indian cinema. But in the Ramoji Film City Park (Hyderabad) does not need specific knowledge – the largest film city in the world will show and tell everything.

            First of all, the park is a place where films are made: with fifty pavilions, locations for outdoor filming, models of buildings and natural objects, dressing and props workshops, laboratories for creating special effects. And all this, imagine, is open to visitors.

            Secondly, this is the Fundustan amusement park with bright performances (there are also Indian dances!) And original attractions.

            Thirdly, it is a landscaped green area with a bird park, a butterfly park and a bonsai garden.

            Fourth, these are atmospheric restaurants – in one of them, for example, they offer to feel like a celebrity, and in the other they invite you to dine with blockbuster stars.

            It is difficult to see all this in one day, so there are several hotels in the park.

            Events, holidays, festivals

            One of the main events of the month is Christmas , which is celebrated on December 25 in many countries. Preparation for the holiday begins ahead of time, and what a pleasure it is to immerse yourself in the magical atmosphere!

            At this time, Christmas carols float through the streets of Vienna, mixed with the aroma of gingerbread. In the cities of Germany, among the souvenirs you will definitely see the nutcrackers.

            If you find yourself in Christmas Prague, the photo will certainly include a betlem (nativity scene) with live lambs bent over a manger with a hedgehog (as little Jesus is called in the Czech Republic).

            In Barcelona, you are unlikely to find snow, but you want to buy children kaga tio – a log with legs that brings gifts on a festive night.

            However, December is rich in holidays and festivals of a different kind.

            From the first days of December, Munich (Germany) gathers those who do not yawn from boredom at the word “art”. There are no bored people at Tolwood Festival , because there is music, theater, circus, art objects, and Bavarian cuisine – and at the same time, admission is free everywhere.

            In December, when it gets dark early, it’s time for light festivals . One of them takes place at the beginning of the month in Lyon (France), and here everything is used, from candles to complex laser projections.

            The second one is held in December-January in Amsterdam (Netherlands) where intricate light installations appear.

            Cosmopolitan Haifa (Israel) every December weekend starts Feast of Holidays – an event that unites the traditions of Judaism, Islam and Christianity. Part of the events of the holiday is intended for children.

            The Jewish holiday Hanukkah often falls in December. For eight holidays, candles are lit in hanukkahs – special candlesticks, and children are supposed to give small gifts every evening. In addition, it is customary to cook dishes in oil for Hanukkah: the kids love latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyah (doughnuts) the most.

            In Dublin, Ireland, on December 26, St. Stefan: boys dressed as chimney sweeps walk the streets and ask for money. The funds raised go to charity.

            pancake run is organized in Berlin (Germany) before the new year. Everyone can participate in it: it is enough to come to the Mommsen stadium on December 31 and get ready to run from 2 to 10 km.

            Pancakes are waiting for all participants at the end of the race. Many come to the race in carnival costumes – for the originality shown, you can get a special prize.

            Where to go in Russia in December

            There are many options for holidays with a child in Russia in December – these are excursions to the most beautiful cities, skiing, and relaxation in secluded cottages. What attracts you the most?

            Moscow

            You will like:

            • convenient transport links with many countries;
            • abundance of attractions;
            • ice rinks and other outdoor activities.

            Please note:

            • rest is quite expensive;
            • at the end of December, many theaters arrange children’s matinees;
            • winter is very cold.

            Where to go with children in December in Russia? Moscow is the first thing that comes to mind, because everyone knows the sights of the capital and everyone knows that in case of cold weather, you can switch from walking to museums.

            Indeed, the list of interesting places in Moscow is long and varied. With children, you can safely go to the Kremlin Armory, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Darwin Museum, and the Moskvarium oceanography center.

            Kids will be enchanted by the Zhili-byli Museum-Theatre, and teenagers will be enchanted by the atmosphere of the Bulgakov Museum. Surprisingly, there are many free museums in the city, including the Metro Museum and the Water Museum.

            But we must also mention Moscow circuses, theatres, parks, playgrounds, indoor entertainment centers. .. No, definitely the weather will not interfere with the rest.

            You can really expect some surprises from the weather in Moscow. Sometimes the temperature stays near zero, allowing you to walk around the old city. And sometimes it gets down to -10°C, and then you need to rent skates and go to the skating rink – there are about a hundred of them in winter.

            There are sometimes exhibitions of ice sculptures next to the ice rinks. With a child, you can go sledding in one of the parks.

            Many people come to Moscow for the New Year – here it is celebrated colorfully, with fireworks, shows, and treats. But at this time, the capital is very crowded, and prices skyrocket.

            • Holidays with children in Moscow

            Arkhyz

            You will like:

            • trails for beginner skiers;
            • good road coverage in the second half of December;
            • good hotels, chalets and guest houses.

            Please note:

            • you need to get to the resort with several transfers;
            • there are almost no shops in tourist villages;
            • few opportunities for excursions and entertainment.

            If you don’t have the strength to wait for the school holidays, already in mid-December you can rush to the Arkhyz ski resort with your children. Windless, sunny weather with a slight frost and snow-covered slopes of the Caucasus – what you need for comfortable skiing.

            Daytime temperatures are usually between +4°C and -4°C, although colder days are possible.

            Against the backdrop of Alpine resorts, Arkhyz looks modest: there are only 15 km of pistes (there should be 270 km), and most of them are intended for beginners. But the infrastructure here is developing in the right direction – the lifts are modern, the slopes are of high quality, classes for little skiers are organized in the children’s town.

            Hotels are also not far behind. So far, with a generally fairly high level of service, they provide few services to families with children, but even now there are playrooms and babysitting services in some places.

            It must be said that the ski pass in high season is not that cheap. A day of skiing costs about 25 euros for an adult and 13 euros for a child.

            Another disadvantage of Arkhyz is the weak après-ski program.

            Karelia

            You will like:

            • wonderful nature;
            • sanatoriums with services for families with children;
            • opportunities for active recreation.

            Please note:

            • for excursions with children it may be too cold;
            • there are heavy snowfalls in December;
            • It is most convenient to travel around Karelia by car.

            People often come to Karelia in summer to visit the Kizhi Museum of Wooden Architecture, visit Valaam Island and see other objects of the Blue Road tourist attraction.

            In winter, all this is also available to tourists, however, you need to dress warmly: at an average temperature of -3°C, it can get colder to -10-15°C.

            In December, excursions shift to the background, and the main goal can be to relax in country cottages, walks in the snow-covered forest, skiing and sledding. There are even small ski resorts here – Malaya Medvezhka, Yalgora, Gorka.

            Some dedicate the winter months to treatment in Karelian sanatoriums. For example, at the Marcial Waters resort, diseases of the digestive and respiratory organs, the cardiovascular system, and the musculoskeletal system are treated.

            In the sanatorium “Marcial Waters” there are treatment programs for children from 4 years old. In addition, they took care of children’s and family entertainment. In December, such a vacation is much cheaper than in summer.

            On December 1, it is interesting to be in Olonets, where the games of Santa Clauses are held – a fun competition with unexpected contests.

            Where to go in Ukraine in December

            Holidays with a child in December in Ukraine are successful because several national holidays fall at this time. Despite the Orthodox Christmas fast, there is also a place for fun and fun.

            Kyiv

            You will like:

            • varied entertainment program;
            • acquaintance with folk traditions;
            • colorful winter holidays;

            Please note:

            • there are many tourists in the city closer to the New Year;
            • school holidays start at the end of December;
            • December is sometimes very cold.

            The capital of Ukraine is good at any time, but in December we recommend not just walking and visiting museums, but learning more about folk holiday traditions.

            For example, the Cossack settlement “Mamayeva Sloboda” at the beginning of winter invites you to master classes in singing carols, to horseback riding and sleigh rides, to evenings (“vechornitsa”).

            Look at the “Sloboda” December 7, the day of St. Katerina to look at fortune-telling, or on December 13, on the day of St. Andrey to try dumplings with all sorts of fillings.

            A special program awaits children in Mamayeva Sloboda – just sit on a warm stove or write a letter with a quill.

            Winter master classes are also held in the ethno-complex “Ukrainian Village”. Before the holiday, children willingly sculpt toys from clay, make handicrafts from straw, and make greeting cards. The kids will not refuse to help their parents at the dumpling making master class.

            In the Pirogovo open-air museum people’s holidays are also cheerfully celebrated. On the day of St. Andrey, here you can participate in biting kalita, fortune-telling and tasting dumplings.

            And about the middle of December, the residence of St. Nicholas begins to work. It is interesting to go on an excursion, where they tell how people in Ukraine decorated their homes for Christmas, what they put in the house instead of a Christmas tree, and what they were treated to on a festive evening.

            Part of the fun takes place in the open air, and you need to dress for a walk, taking into account the fact that the daytime temperature in Kyiv can drop to -5-8°C.

            Please note:

            • at the beginning of December there may be problems with snow cover;
            • on New Year’s Eve the resort is overcrowded with tourists;
            • accommodation must be booked several months before the trip.

            Where to go with children in December in Ukraine to go skiing? In Bukovel – there is already a real winter.

            During the day it usually stays light frost, about -3-7°С, at night it gets colder up to -8-15°С, it snows every now and then – it’s time to open the season. It happens that colds and snowfalls are late, but in the second half of December the slopes are already quite ready for skiing.

            By the beginning of the season, 16 lifts are launched in Bukovel, 68 km of slopes and a snow park are opened. Beginners are welcome at the ski school, and children are accepted from the age of 3.

            Older children, who are no longer averse to skiing on their own, will not refuse to spend time in the Bukovel for Children ski camp.

            The recreation program, however, is not limited to skiing. The resort has a snow tubing track and an outdoor skating rink, here you can ride snowmobiles, snowbikes and dog sleds, and children are invited to indoor play centers.

            More and more hotels open every year in Bukovel. The level of service in them is quite high, but there are still few services for children. To save money, you can stay in the private sector or in nearby villages.

            Please note:

            • Pistyn is best reached by car;
            • there can be a lot of snow in winter;
            • nearest catering establishments are located in Kosovo.

            The Carpathians are a blessed land. It was here that the winter wizard, who is revered in Ukraine, settled. In the Ivano-Frankivsk region, in the village of Pistyn, the estate of St. Nicholas has recently opened, where something interesting happens all year round.

            Guests of the estate are offered to visit the saint’s dwelling, built in the Hutsul style, the museum of Christmas toys, the museum of nature. For children, master classes in making jewelry are held here.

            But most miracles happen on the eve of Christmas. On December 19, St. Nicholas sets off to deliver gifts to children, and the day before, a festival of Christmas decorations is held in his estate.

            You need to dress warmly for a trip: in the Carpathians it can be both -3°С and -15°С.

            Prices for holidays with children in December

            The cost of holidays in December, as a rule, increases, because the high season begins at both beach and ski resorts.

            The end of December is a popular period for travel, for carriers and hoteliers this is a reason to raise prices.

            The island resorts are the most expensive. So, for a week in the Dominican Republic you need to pay at least 850 euros per person, in Cuba – at least 700 euros. A trip to the UAE falls into the same price range, although prices for tours to this country start from 400 euros.

            A week tour to Egypt, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand will cost from 500-600 euros per person.

            Ski resorts have their own rates. A 7-day trip to Austria costs from 700 euros per person, to Germany – from 650 euros, to Bulgaria – from 440 euros.

            The cost of a sightseeing holiday is very different: for example, in the Czech Republic you can relax for a week for 400 euros per person, and in Finland get ready to pay twice as much.

            How to save money

            There are only two ways to have a cheap rest in December – book a hotel many months before the trip, as well as purchase tickets from low-cost companies or travel around your native country.

            But even in this case, you can’t count on a budget holiday at the end of December. Usually prices rise from the last decade of the month, reach a peak by the New Year and stay at this level the first week of January.

            Where not to go

            Despite a decent list of places where you can relax with a child in December, you still want to add something else to it. The list can really be expanded – the main thing is that resorts where December does not please the weather do not get there.

            So, some warm countries for holidays will fall out of the list. The rainy season is starting in Indonesia. In the Maldives, on the contrary, it is coming to an end, but we recommend waiting for January, when the precipitation will come to naught.

            Rainy weather interferes with tourists on the east coast of Sri Lanka – on the west coast at this time it is much more pleasant, especially if you go on vacation with children at the end of December.

            Thailand also has resorts where winter is not the best time to relax. From November to January, the rainy season lasts on Koh Samui, in Krabi. It also rains in Phuket, but it usually rains at night.

            Many ski resorts are also at a low start – most open the season in the middle or at the end of the month. It is better not to go in December to the ski resorts of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland.

            At the beginning of the month there may be problems with snow, and at the end of the month there can be incredible queues for the ski lifts due to the Christmas holidays.

            Recommendations for families

            December is often referred to as the time for the best holidays with young children. We are talking about a trip to hot countries, where in winter you can bask on the beach and not languish in the heat. It’s good to relax with a baby in Egypt or the UAE – the weather is excellent there, and the hotels are suitable for families.

            Southeast Asia (India, Thailand, Vietnam) also gets rave reviews. But there in December it is quite hot and also crowded. If you are traveling with a small child, take a week to adjust after the climate change.

            For a relaxing holiday, the western coast of Sri Lanka, as well as the Caribbean (Cuba, Dominican Republic), is suitable. Their minus is a long flight.

            If you are planning a trip during the school holidays, you can take your children to ski resorts in Europe. Of course, you should not count on half-empty tracks, but high-quality service and picturesque mountains will still leave a good impression.

            Only a few days left? This is enough for a sightseeing trip to those countries that can be reached by plane in 2-4 hours – for example, to the Czech Republic or Finland. If possible, shift the rest to the first half of December, when there are relatively few tourists.

            A great idea for a family trip is to go for a couple of days to one of the European cities where the Christmas market takes place. A lot of vivid impressions and a New Year’s mood are guaranteed to you.

          Beach holidays

          According to tourists, the best holiday on the beaches of Thailand in December is on the islands, and the water and coast on the city beaches on the mainland at this time are not very clean. Great for relaxing in the middle of winter, Koh Chang, located in the Gulf of Thailand. The beaches of the island are mostly sandy and most of them are located on the western part of the island, where you can enjoy stunningly beautiful sunsets in the evenings.

          In Hua Hin, the sea warms up to a comfortable +29°C. The number of cloudy days does not exceed three, and precipitation is very rare, so relaxing on the beach here is considered one of the best.

              February

              February snowdrifts

              Ancient Romans named February in honor of the god of the underworld and dedicated to repentance for sins and the memory of the dead. And in Russia, February had several names: the cross section – the winter winds are still whipping, the low water – the boundary between winter and spring, snowfall – a lot of snow, lute – frosts are fierce, sideburns – the sun begins to warm.

              This is the last month of winter, the most windy and blizzard, not without reason people say: “Blizzards and blizzards have come in February”. At first, the weather does not differ from January. On frosty days, the snow shines dazzlingly brightly in the sun, the sky turns blue, the shadows from the trees turn blue.
              In the second half of January, humid winds begin to blow and the winter softens, turning into prolonged thaws. After them, the old snow settles, forming a solid crust, on which you can walk without falling through. The dark trunks of the trees noticeably heat up, near the butts the snow begins to thaw. But winter does not give up, the thaw is replaced by cold and snowstorms: Sretensky (February 15), icy Nikolai (February 17) and Vlasevsky (February 24) frosts.

              The average monthly temperature in February in the Moscow region is -9.6ºC. But sometimes February is warm, and sometimes too cold. So, in 1935 the average monthly temperature rose to +5.7ºC, but in 1929 it dropped to -38.2ºC.

              April

              April — snowdrops bloom

              The name of this month comes from the Latin word aprilus, meaning “warmed by the sun”. And in Ancient Russia, April was called a bloom, because at this time some plants bloom (for example, an exotic butterbur), as well as a snowman, an aquarius, a birch tree.

              During the day in April, the sun warms up more and more, the drops are louder, although it is still frosty at night. Reservoirs are freed from ice, streams run along ravines, rivers overflow. The ground begins to become bare of snow, cloudiness decreases. True, sometimes clouds come in and snow falls again. But as soon as the north wind subsides, the sky becomes blue again.

              It also snows in April.

              The duration of sunshine reaches 164.5 hours. By the end of April, the land is completely free of snow. Trees begin to sap. Signs for the Annunciation

              • If the night is warm on the Annunciation, the spring will be friendly.

              According to the legend, on April 7 Archangel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she had found grace from God and would give birth to the Savior of the world. Since then, the feast of the Annunciation has been considered by Christians to be one of the brightest and most significant.

              And for the celebrations, especially on such a serious occasion, in Russia it was customary to carefully prepare. Clean, wash, clean, wash … but you never know the worries of the real owners. Tomorrow, not only will there be no time, but it will be impossible to do all this. Indeed, in the Annunciation, any, even the most trifling work, was considered a great sin. Therefore, preparations for the feast fell on Zechariah and Jacob. The bright feast of the Annunciation should be celebrated in a clean house.

              On this day, not only the earth rejoices and rejoices, according to popular belief, even angels in heaven celebrate it, and sinners in hell cease to be tortured. They say that on the Annunciation the sun plays at sunrise, shimmering with all the colors of the rainbow. After all, the Mother of God herself sows on this day from heavenly heights the fields of the earth, scattering grains and seeds of all blades of grass growing on the earth from the golden kosher.

              Only in the evening will she finish her good work, and then the great plowing begins throughout Russia. But while the Mother of God is working, no one: “neither people, nor birds, nor reptiles of the earth, nor animals of the forest” – can perform even the most seemingly trifling work. It is believed that the cuckoo was left without a nest because it tried to curl it on the Annunciation, and the mole paid the price, disobeying the ban.

              Therefore, away from sin, on this day “the bird does not nest, the red-maiden does not weave her braids.” The water consecrated for the Annunciation was considered holy and had to stand under the icons all year round. They say that she did not deteriorate and did not become troubled, unless a sorcerer or a person who was seen in unseemly deeds touched her. This water, according to rumors, could raise the most neglected patient to his feet or drink sick cattle. This month is the beginning of preparations for the summer season, and it is important to redo a lot of the April gardening work that falls at this time.
              This year in April there was a snowfall (see photo), which lasted three days.

              If violets bloomed on Kuzma, they sowed radishes, parsley, dill, and some people even planted onions. It was strictly forbidden for peasants to appear in the garden, because everyone then knew: “What a peasant does not sow, he will grow in color, but will not give fruit. ” And in general, all garden work was supposed to be done secretly, remembering that “another’s look is envious, and envy, like rust, will eat the whole crop.”

              • May 5 – Luke. Onion suffering was called by the people the day of St. Luke, leaving for landing by the whole world.

Egory was considered the patron saint of livestock, the first pasture of cattle in the field, on spring grass, was timed to coincide with this day. It was perceived as a great holiday and was furnished with various rituals, sentences and songs.

              • May 13 – Jacob. A warm evening and a starry night on Yakov – to a windy and dry summer, and a warm day with rain portends abundant bread.
              • May 14 – Yeremey. It’s nicer on Yeremey – cleaning is good, bad weather – you’ll miss the whole winter. If the day before the sunrise was clear, then the whole summer will be clear.

              • In May, even the wind sings merrily.
              • May dragged spring to the threshold, decorates forests, awaits summer to visit.
              • But just as the peasants did not believe capricious April, so they did not place bright hopes on gentle May.
              • Ah, ah, the month of May is both warm and cold.
              • May grass will feed the hungry.

Therefore, when they heard thunder peals, the youth hurried out into the street to catch their luck, and the old people, no longer chasing happiness, only crossed themselves, and said: “Send, Lord, still water and warm dew.”

              May is an important part of the gardening work that is best done this month.

              If during the day the leaves of oxalis are parallel to the soil surface, and at night they fold in half, then the weather will be clear, if vice versa, it will rain.

              Exceptional weather forecaster and thistle. Before cloudy days, its spines are tightly compressed and do not prick at all, and before hot days, they are bent to the sides. July

              July is the crown of summer. At this time, the garden is unusually beautiful. Blooming daylily pink “Entrapment” and phlox Chameleon.

              July – the green feast of the year, “the beauty of summer is the middle of color”; month of fragrant berries, honey herbs; the month is violent, lush, multi-colored. July is the zenith of summer. It is considered the hottest month of the year. In central Russia, there are usually no frosts in July. The hottest days in the middle lane are set when tropical air is brought in from the south of the country or from Central Asia. At such times, the air temperature even in the shade reaches 30 C.

              Tropical air lasts for a week and then most often gives way to continental-polar dominance, which sets more moderate and even cool weather. The average monthly temperature in the Moscow region is 18.3 ºC. Precipitation in July is more than at other times of the year – up to 74 mm on average. Rains are usually heavy and rarely do without thunderstorms. By the end of the month there is a lot of dew. • July 8 – Peter and Feofaniya. From this day forward, forty more hot days can be expected.

            August

            August is the sunset of summer. Autumn gelenium is already blooming.

            August is the last month of summer. The rich month of August is just enough. August – gustar, thick-eater, pickle. Just have time to make blanks and fill the pantries.

            But the heat of summer is gradually subsiding: the dawn breaks later, it gets dark earlier, the nights become cold, the water in the rivers and lakes freezes. Increasingly, bird youth rises into the sky, makes test flights before a long journey. That is why August is called the month of birds flocks. And our ancestors in the old days called him a glow, sickle, stubble, mistress, zornik.

            The month received its modern name in honor of the Roman emperor Augustus, grandnephew of the great Julius Caesar. Why did August choose this particular month? Perhaps because it follows July, or perhaps the emperor’s mood was as fickle as the weather in August. In August, before lunch, summer, after lunch – autumn. In August, everything is in stock: and rain, and a bucket, and damp weather. In August, everything is an hour: keep mittens in reserve. August will come, will lead its own rules. If in August the sun soars during the day, and the night was cold, then the weather will remain warm. The web in August lies on the plants – to warm weather. If in August the ripened oats turn green again – by a rainy autumn. If the oak in August is rich in acorns – to the harvest of bread. If in August-October the horse does not linger on the pasture and the coat lies smoothly on it – by a harsh winter. In August, the sun warms and the water gets colder.

            Folk omens and holidays of August

            • August 1 — Makrida. Macrida is wet – and autumn is wet, Macrida is dry – and autumn too.
            • August 2 – Ilyin’s day. What is the weather on Ilya before lunch – this will be summer, and what the weather will be like in the afternoon – this will be autumn.
            • August 4 – Mary Magdalene. Thunder day.
            • August 7 – Anna Winter-pointer (Anna-holodnitsa and Macarius). Winter was judged on this day. If the matinee is cold – and the winter is cold. What kind of weather before lunch – such a winter until December, what kind of weather after lunch – such a winter after December (a clear and warm day portends a cold winter, rainy – snowy).
            • August 14 – the first Honey Savior.
            • August 19 – the second Savior. Transformation.

The morning clouds are dissipating, and the sky is covered with a cloudy veil of high clouds – there will be a heavy downpour. Rare clouds – to clear, chilly weather, arranged in stripes – to rain. When bubbles appear in puddles during rain, this is for a long time.

            • Autumn – a spoonful of water, a bucket of mud.
            • Though Father September is cold, but full.
            • If July and August are not cooked, September will clean up, and whoever is thrifty is happy. What you pick up with your hands in autumn, you pick up with your lips in winter.
            • The September sun, as if tired after a long summer, clings closer and closer to the earth, dark nights grow bolder, and fogs strive to fraternize with cold matinees. But if the September thunder rumbles loudly and in a businesslike way in the cloud-curtained sky, autumn promises to be warm.
            • The cobweb circling the streets predicts sunny days, but the cranes, not in a hurry to fly away, guarantee two or three weeks of good weather. Warm autumn – to a long winter.

            Signs of September

            Rainbow in September. A very beautiful natural phenomenon!

            September combines both summer and autumn. In warm years, “Indian summer” begins, lasting one to three weeks. Sometimes, after dry sunny weather, when southern winds blow for 2–3 days in a row, clouds can gather in the sky, and then the last thunderstorms rumble.

            Secondary flowering of the apple tree – by the long autumn. On the trees, the leaves turn yellow from the bottom of the crown – autumn will be long. If birch leaves turn yellow from the top – early spring is coming, from the bottom – late, and if evenly throughout the crown, then the timing of the onset of spring will be medium long-term. Cranes fly high, slowly, cooing – to a good autumn. Birds fly low – a cold winter is expected, high – warm. Large ant heaps – there will be a harsh winter. Thunder in September – to a long warm autumn.

            Folk omens of autumn

If the stars are bright in October, the weather is good. If the cranes fly slowly and “talk” – to a warm autumn. If the cranes flew together – wait for the coming frosts. Red sunset – good weather. Mice hide a supply of grass inside the hole – for a cold winter, fold it outside the holes – for a warm one. October thunder – to a snowless winter. Bees are active – the weather will still stand. If the cones on spruce grow low – to early frosts, and if high – to the cold at the end of winter.

            November

            November in the forest.

            November – September’s grandson, October’s son, winter – brother. In November, the peasant says goodbye to the cart, climbs into the sleigh.

            November got its name from the Latin word novem (nine), as it was the ninth month in ancient Rome. And the old Russian name for November – breast – because of the frozen piles of dirt on the roads. November is the “twilight of the year”: deep autumn is replaced by pre-winter with unstable weather. Following sharp cooling, timid thaws are possible. After November 4, the air temperature steadily drops below 0ºC. The average monthly temperature is -2.3ºC.

            Signs of November

            • Signs of November – long-term: A lot of snow in November – there will be a harvest of bread. If the snow fell on the wet ground and did not melt, then in the spring snowdrops will bloom early and together. If possible, they monitor the mice: if the mice make large supplies, a harsh and snowy winter is ahead.
            • November 2 – Artemy, Sadok.

            • November 14 – Kuzma and Demyan, or Kuzminki. “Kuzma and Demyan forge ice on land and on waters,” says the proverb. A snowy day promises a big spring flood. If there are still leaves on the trees that day, frost is expected next year.
            • November 19 – Pavel and Varlaam. A lot of snow on this day – for a snowy winter.
            • November 23 – Erast. Our ancestors said: “From Erast, wait for the ice crust.” But if on this day there is frost on the trees, and the next day after Fyodor the Studite (November 25) the ground is covered with snow, then until the Introduction (December 4) there will be thaws and the autumn thaw will stand.

            December

            December in the garden. Tui and Christmas trees in the snow.

            The last month of the ancient Romans was the tenth, so its name goes back to the Latin word decem (ten). And the Slavs called December jelly – for the cold.

            December – the beginning of winter. Cold, snowy, cloudy. Thaws are few. Severe frosts also occur this month: Vvedensky (from December 4), Nikolsky (from December 19), Spiridonievsky (from December 25). So, in 1892, in December, a temperature of -38. 8ºС was recorded. The average monthly temperature is -8ºС.

            Strong winds blow in December and snow often falls. The depth of the snow cover reaches 15-45 cm. Snow has always been considered a peasant wealth. As the saying goes, “The snow is deep and the bread is good.” Indeed, snow protects perennials and winter crops from freezing. Even in the most severe frosts, the temperature of the soil surface under the snow cover is four to six times higher than the air temperature.

            December is the darkest month. There are only two or three clear days, the rest are cloudy. “A winter day the size of a sparrow’s sock,” says the proverb.

            The shortest day of the year falls on December 22, the winter solstice, or solstice. Since December 25, the length of the day increases.

            Signs and folk holidays in December
