Where to go in the Canaries? Which island to choose, when to go to the Canaries?

Which island to choose in the Canaries? Where are the most beautiful beaches, the most beautiful landscapes? When to go to the Canary Islands? These are the first questions we ask ourselves when choosing this holiday destination or tourist circuit.

If, like me, you are considering a small stay in the sun to combine tourism and relaxation, here is the information I gathered to prepare for my trip.

Thus, I was able to verify whether the period I have chosen is good to enjoy the sun. And above all, I was able to select the Canary Island that suits me best since I am looking for most beautiful beaches but also tourist spots to discover…

But the Canary Islands is a coastline of around 1 km off the coast of Morocco with more than 500 all different beaches (golden, red, black sand beaches, virgin beaches, overcrowded, naturist beaches, family beaches, etc.).

I didn’t expect to hesitate so much for choose an island in the Canaries

When to go to the Canaries?

The Canary Islands are an interesting tourist destination in all seasons, even in winter.

In fact, the climate of the Canaries is subtropical type : Temperatures still very mild, very sunny days and light rain.

The temperature differences are not very large on the coasts during the different seasons of the year: it is around 20 to 30 ° C all year round.

Where to go in the Canaries in winter?

During the winter months, temperatures remain mild on all the Canary Islands: Between 18 and 22 ° C on average.

  • December: 20 to 22 ° C on average and 5 days maximum of rain
  • January: 18 to 21 ° C on average and less than 4 rainy days
  • February: 18 to 20 ° C on average and less than 3 rainy days
  • March: 18 to 21 ° C on average with less than 3 days of rain

However, the most oriental namely Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria are the hotter and the less windy in winter.

Where to go in the Canaries in autumn?

In autumn, whatever the island, the climate in the Canaries combines heat, sun and little rain (except in November).

Here is an idea of the average temperatures in autumn:

  • September: from 26 to 27 ° C on average and less than 3 rainy days
  • October: 24 to 26 ° C on average and less than 3 rainy days
  • November: 23 to 24 ° C on average with a little rain and wind

Where to go in the Canaries in spring and summer?

In spring and summer, the average temperatures are in the range of 25 to 30 degrees.

Be careful though because Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are very hot in summer with winds coming from the Sahara desert which make the climate warmer than on the other Canary Islands.

Which island to choose in the Canaries? My criteria

My priority for my week-long stay in the Canaries in the fall is to choose an island where I can enjoy the sun, beautiful beaches, a nice hotel and a few excursions in wild nature or in typical small villages.

It is therefore in relation to my style of stay that I will seek and choose the Canary Island which will best meet my expectations (which may be different for you…).

Which island to choose in the Canaries? Tourist interest

First of all, you should only compare the seven main Canary Islands as these are the most easily accessible by plane.

These islands which form the Canary Islands archipelago are incredibly diverse and rich:

  • 4 national parks,
  • 7 biosphere reserves,
  • 3 marine reserves,
  • more than 3 endemic species,
  • volcanic landscapes,
  • ancient forests thousands of years old,
  • waterfalls,
  • beautiful natural pools,
  • heavenly beaches …

So I have been on traveler forums, blogs and other travel sites to compare the different islands and rate their main tourist attractions (see below).

Which island to choose in the Canaries? Differences between the islands

Without going through all the Canary Islands and getting drunk with lots of figures, details, information …

I’m just going to get to the point by summarizing the main tourist characteristics of each of the main Canary Islands:

  • Tenerife : It is the most famous island for tourists. It has a great diversity of panoramas (forests, banana plantations, vineyards, desert landscapes…). As for the beaches, there are many with black sand but also with white sand. One of the best beaches in Tenerife can be found in the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife. But it is an artificial beach: La Playa Las Teresitas. Be careful because Tenerife is the island of mass tourism !
  • Gran Canaria : Landscapes of mountains and large beaches but very busy seaside resorts. This is the island where the capital of the Canaries is located: Las Palmas which looks like a big metropolis.
  • Lanzarote : Volcanic landscapes, art, culture and beaches mostly with black pebbles. However there are some beaches with golden sand in Playa Blanca (very touristy seaside resort) or in Papagayo.
  • Cafeteria : National parks, tropical forests, volcanoes… This Canary Island is ideal for hikers and lovers of nature and extreme sports. But on the beach side: Bof bof …
  • Fuerteventura : It is the Canary Island where we find the most paradisiacal beaches! It is the Canary Island that appeals to lovers of relaxation, calm and board sports (a lot of wind). But there are not only beaches, there is also something to discover!

Which island to choose in the Canaries?

For my little week of lazing in the sun, I hesitated with Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. But to avoid mass tourism and have the greatest choice of beautiful quiet beaches, it is therefore Fuerteventura that I chose. See official website of the Fuerteventura tourist office.

Choose Fuerteventura for its beaches

Swimming in a turquoise sea, in crystal clear waters, sunbathing on paradisiacal beaches, rest, restaurants and hikes… This will be the program of my vacation on theisland of fuerteventura !

Choose Fuerteventura for its landscapes

Indeed, in addition to the magnificent beaches (see below) Fuerteventura Has volcanic landscapes incredible that can be explored by following a hiking trail through the Caldera de Gairia.

Choose Fuerteventura to access Lanzarote

Urban artist from the port of Corralejo in Fuerteventura there are ferries that leave every day to the island of Lanzarote à Playa Blanca. Thus, in 30 minutes, it is very easy to visit in 1 day another magnificent island of the Canaries !!!

Where are the best beaches in Fuerteventura?

Of course, to choose my hotel in Fuerteventura, I first looked for where are the most beautiful beaches of the island. To my taste, the most beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura are located in the far north and the far south of the island.

Here are the characteristics of the most beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura that caught my attention in choosing the location of my hotel accordingly:

Best beaches in Fuerteventura – Costa Calma

Next to the village The Lajita, in the south of the island of Fuerteventura, is the beautiful beach of the seaside resort Costa Calma. Fairly protected from the winds, it is a beach of 2 kilometers of white sand where you can enjoy with your family. A bit too touristy for my taste, the Costa Calma is, however, the gateway to Jandia beaches.

Best beaches of Fuerteventura in Jandia

jandia is a nature reserve on a narrow peninsula at the southwestern end of Fuerteventura. Haven of peace and tranquility, the beaches are sublime and one can go hiking to explore the wild landscapes of the region.

A Jantia, I particularly recommend the Sotavento beach which is a little wonder! 9 kilometers of immaculate beach, a Mecca for windsurfing and kitesurfing but of undeniable beauty!

Risco del paso is also a must-see beach in Jantia. It is certainly one of the most beautiful beaches of Fuerteventura by its immensity and its lagoons which change with the sandstone of the tides . ..

Finally, the Matorral Beach in Jantia is also super beautiful but surrounded by concrete …

Best beach in Fuerteventura – Corralejo

At the northeastern end of the island of Fuerteventura, dunes outline the landscape over ten kilometers (desert environment). Between the dunes, immense beaches of golden sand await you in the Corralejo Natural Park.

City Corrajelo (former fishing village) is now a seaside resort where with hotels, restaurants and bars. From Corrajejo, you can reach in 20 minutes by boat the magnificent Isla de Lobo to spend the day there (see photo below).

Most beautiful beach in Fuerteventura – El Cotillo

A few kilometers from Corralejo, therefore still north of Fuerteventura, El Cotillo is a fishing village with very good little restaurants.

But El Cotillo is above all wonderful beaches of white sand with a sea of turquoise and limpid waters.

The most beautiful beaches are undoubtedly The puddles, The Lakes et Piedra Beach.

Where to choose your hotel in the Canaries?

For my stay in the Canaries, I of course chose my hotel in Fuerteventura. I chose it close to the most beautiful beaches and authentic and wild landscapes… It is therefore on the Sotavento beach in the Jandia peninsula that I chose to stay for a week.

Which hotel in the Canary Islands?

So this is the hotel INNSIDE by Meliá Fuerteventura who was best placed to enjoy the sublime beach and the calm in this beautiful and special desert…

Not too expensive (650 Euros per week) and super well equipped (gym, massage cabins, windsurfing and kitesurfing equipment at the René Egli center, yoga and tai chi sessions …), it is a very good address that I enjoy sharing!

Canary Islands things to do

First of all, before deciding the nicest Canary Island for you, you should know that the Canary archipelago is made up of eight islands: La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Graciosa. There are also several islets such as Lobos (visitable), Alegranza, Montaña Clara and several smaller rocks. The Canary Islands have belonged to Spain since the fifteenth century, the date on which the Crown of Castile conquered the Canarian aborigines. But where are the Canary Islands? Geographically they are located in the Atlantic Ocean, a few kilometers from the coast of West Africa, in front of Morocco and the Sahara. That is, about 2 hours and a half flight from the Peninsula.

Canary Islands map

The climate in the Canary Islands is subtropical with mild temperatures all year round. So you do not have to worry looking for the best Canary Island in November or December. It doesn’t usually rain much and, luckily, there are no tornadoes or earthquakes here. Still, you should know that the islands are small miniature continents. That is, in the mountainous areas there can be temperatures below zero (only in winter) and, at the same time, on the southern beaches it can be more than 20 degrees. In any case, we believe that the best months to visit are from October to May, since it is still cold in Europe and the entire northern hemisphere.

Which is the most beautiful Canary Island?

In short, as you may have seen, it is impossible to say which is the prettiest Canary Island, since not all of us like the same thing. However, we hope that after highlighting the main characteristics of each island, you will be able to answer the question which Canary Island should I visit according to your preferences.

Natural pools Gran Canaria: Dos Roques

Possibly, if you want to be away from the masses, the best island in the Canary Islands to go to in summer is one of the less touristy ones. These are El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma. On the other hand, if you want to know which is the nicest Canary Island to visit in winter, any one is worth it depending on your tastes. The climate in all of them is quite similar and the whole year the temperatures are great.

Which is the cheapest Canary Island?

Finally, another question that usually comes up in all the forums is which is the cheapest Canary Island to visit. In principle they are all similar, but the most populated have a greater offer of accommodation and restaurants, so there is more competitiveness in prices.

Canarian food

In addition, they are better connected, so you can save a lot on flights. In any case, as they are more populated, they have a greater offer of leisure and activities, so spending at the destination can be higher. The same happens with the question which is the cheapest Canary Island to live, for sure the rental housing will be cheaper in the less populated islands, but you have also less leisure options here. So you have to choose once again according to your way of life.

Tenerife

The weather is the number one reason why most people flock to Tenerife’s shores, to enjoy almost guaranteed sunshine all year. Family-friendly and just a four-hour flight away, it is consistently one of Britain’s top winter sun destinations. Most holidaymakers head to the south-western resorts of Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje where the bulk of the island’s holiday accommodation is located. Although it’s hard to see the join between the two resorts, Los Cristianos is quieter than its neighbour and attracts a more mature visitor.

• The best beach hotels in Spain

El Hierro

Lanzarote has its extraordinary lava fields, Tenerife its towering volcano of Mount Teide and La Palma the cavernous crater of the Caldera de Taburiente. But if you want sheer scale, the sense of being a fly on a green wall, you have to come to El Hierro, the Isle of Milk and Honey, the smallest and most westerly island of the Canarian archipelago. The stupendous gulf (El Golfo) is all that remains of the inner wall of a volcano crater too mighty even to imagine.

Where to stay

Parador de El Hierro

El Hierro, Spain

Telegraph expert rating

Romantic, private colonial charm and contemporary comfort combine in this elegant parador set between mountains and sea, on the island that was once considered the end of the world. A more complete getaway would be hard to imagine. Low-rise, whitewashed walls with traditional wooden balconies and extensive, volcanic stone terraces, all set within sub-tropical gardens on the edge of the ocean, provide Colonial charm and contemporary comfort.

Canary Islands vs The Azores

While there are plenty of similarities between these island chains – both in the Atlantic, both formed by volcanic activity and both tied to a mainland European country – when it comes to which you should choose for your holiday, there’s plenty to divide them!

In the purple corner, and needing little introduction, we have The Canary Islands!

Arguably THE most popular destination for British tourists all year round. These 8 Spanish islands are found just off the coast of Africa – with top notch beaches, infamous nightlife & year-round sun.

In the orange corner, and needing maybe a little introduction, we have the Azores.

These 9 Portuguese islands in the Atlantic Ocean, are described as a mix of Hawaii and Ireland – with verdant green landscape, stunning volcanic lakes and the only tea plantation in Europe!

Going head to head on…

Where’s better for diving?

The Azores

If you’re a keen diver then there are plenty of great opportunities to get your flippers wet on both the Canary Islands and the Azores!

One of the best places to dive is off the coast of Santa Maria, the smallest of the Azores. The marine life is abundant and the water has amazing visibility. Here you’ll get the chance to swim with whale sharks and devil rays – but you’ll also find sunfish, rays, octopi all year round. The underwater landscape isn’t to be missed, with black coral, lava walls and underwater tunnels.

Another Azores diving spot to visit is Princess Alice, between Pico and Faial (it’ll take about 3 hours to get there by boat). The visibility is up to 60m and you’ll find yourself swimming among hammerhead sharks, dolphins and even marlin. Better than all that though is that you’ll get the opportunity to dive with Mobula rays!

The Canary Islands

Not to be outdone, La Catedral is a spectacular dive spot in Gran Canaria. Just off the coast, this dive spot is a 30m high structure (hence the name!) full of caves, arches and crevices to explore. This site is more about the scenery than the fauna – but you can expect to see sea slugs, urchins and smaller fish.

Our verdict: there’s plenty of dive spots to explore in both, but our vote goes to the Azores. The diving experience here will stay with you for a long time.

Where are the best beaches?

The Azores

The Azores may not have the classic white sandy beaches, but there’s an amazing choice of beautiful spots to choose from – especially if water sports are your thing. Praia de Santa Barbara can be found on São Miguel, and is one of the most popular beaches on the island. The sand here is volcanic and black, which makes for an excellent photo op! There’s a surf shop so you can take surfing lessons while you’re there, or simply sit back and watch others give it a go!

For something a bit different you could take a trip to Islet of Vila Franca do Campo – a small beach inside a submerged volcanic crater. It’s not as scary as it sounds! You’ll have to take a boat to get here, but once you’re there the sheltered islet is great for swimming.

The Canary Islands

The Canaries boast better weather than the Azores. It’s mild all year which makes it a go to beach destination even in the winter. The warmest of the islands is Fuerteventura, as it’s the closest to mainland Africa. Playa de Cofete is our favourite beach – a beautiful wild beach that may not be the best for swimming but is certainly best for the views. At the other end of the island you’ll find El Cotillo Beach & Lagoons, similarly beautiful but the lagoons here are better for swimming.

If you’re looking for beaches with more amenities head to Playa del Inglés on Gran Canaria or Playa de las Américas on Tenerife. They’re purpose built resorts with everything you need to sunbathe on the beach all day, then hit the bars and restaurant’s at night. But don’t forget Tenerife is about so much more than just the resorts!

Our verdict: there are some beautiful beaches in the Azores but if relaxing on a white sandy beach is what makes a holiday for you then the Canary Islands are the obvious choice.

Which is best for families?

When it comes down to which island is best for families it really depends on what a ‘family holiday’ is to you. Do you like to explore the outdoors and get off the beaten track with your kids, or do you prefer to relax by the beach with plenty of amenities nearby? That’s not to say there aren’t elements of both in each, but there are definitely different experiences to be had.

The Azores

If you raised a hand for ‘explore the outdoors’ – then the Azores are definitely going to tick that box. The Azores pride themselves on being an amazing natural environment with sustainable travel at the forefront. Direct flights arrive in Sao Miguel and you reach the other islands by ferry – so for ease of travelling with children base yourself in Sao Miguel for your trip. There’s a lot to see and do but here are a few ideas:

  • Furnas – this is a great experience for the whole family. Walk among the geothermal pools, try one of the specialist dishes cooked in the ground or hike to one of the waterfalls.
  • Caldeira Velha – pack your swimsuits and head to this beautiful waterfall with its hot spring pools. Even better – there’s no hike needed.
  • Swim with wild dolphins – take the opportunity to make many kids (and adults!) dreams come true. There are plenty of boat operators to choose from, just bear in mind the minimum age for getting in the water is eight. You could also take a whale watching boat trip for some extra excitement.

The Canary Islands

If a catered for beach holiday is more your thing – then the Canary Islands are a great choice. If you’re looking for more of a resort family holiday then you can’t go wrong with Tenerife – you’ll find everything you need with plenty of extras to keep the kids entertained. If you want to get away from the crowds slightly then head to Fuerteventura instead – it’s a little less built-up and the beaches here are some of the most beautiful in all of the Canaries.

Canary Islands

2

The Azores

2

Our verdict: it’s hard to choose as both have their charm for your family holiday – in fact we’re not doing it! We’ll call this one a tie.

Which is best for nightlife?

The Azores

There’s definitely not so much of a party scene in the Azores, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some great nightlight spots to check out. On Santa Maria, there is Chaminé Club with two floors of music to choose from. Or head to Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, enjoy drinks while looking out over the marina at Baía dos Anjos and then head to Bar Do Pi for the music.

The Canary Islands

Like to hit the town on your holiday? Then you probably want to head to Gran Canaria or Tenerife where you can party all night. In Tenerife head to Playa de las Américas, where you’ll find clubs such as Tramps Tenerife and Sugareef Tenerife on the popular Veronicas strip.

The nightlife on Gran Canaria is second to none. Playa del Ingles serves as the island’s party capital, with countless bars, clubs and pubs to suit all tastes. It’s also a great LGBTQ+ holiday destination, with most of Gran Canaria’s gay bars and clubs here. Expect to see drag queens, regular ‘Pride’ processions and dress-up nights in a part of town where partying is a way of life and almost nothing is off limits.

Our verdict: this is an easy one. After all, the Canary Islands are famous for their nightlife.

Which is best for hiking?

Fans of the great outdoors are spoiled for choice at either island chain. This is largely because of their rugged volcanic landscapes, and protected nature reserves.

The Azores

In the Azores you don’t have to go off the beaten track to find beautiful hikes. Some of the most famous pathways on the islands are on São Miguel – the main island. The landscape here is so verdant it’s fondly known as the “green island” – there’s lush vegetation, beautiful lakes, volcanic craters and mountain peaks. One of the must see spots on the island is the Vista do Rei – a viewpoint looking out over the twin lakes of Verde and Azul below. There’s an easy 7.7km hike to the viewpoint and it’s well worth the views at the end.

The Canary Islands

Most people don’t tend to visit the Canary Islands for the ‘great outdoors’ – the larger islands have become more commercialised and touristy. But take a trip to one of the smallest of the islands – El Hierro – and you can explore a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. One of the most popular paths is La Llanía, it will take you through ancient forest to black sand craters. There are plenty of hikes to choose from and this island really is the jewel in the Canaries’ crown. If less tourism and more nature is your thing, then head here.

The Azores

3

Our verdict: if you enjoy getting out into nature, then the Azores are definitely the better choice!

The results…

Well we seem to have ended in a tie! But strangely this seems fair – whether the Canary Islands or the Azores come out on top for you really depends on what sort of holiday you’re looking for. The Canary Islands are certainly more touristy and can be a little brasher at times, but once you step outside the resort there’s so much more to them and much more to explore. The Azores are a little more rustic and a lot quieter and we love this about them – they’re an outdoor lovers dream. They’re growing in popularity in recent years, so visit now while they’re still a little bit of a secret!

Hang on! A new contender has entered the ring – Madeira!

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Visit Madeira (@visitmadeira) on

Madeira

With the Azores to the west and the Canary Islands to the south, Madeira is a 4-island archipelago tied to Portugal. The largest, and most visited island is Madeira itself. Like the other islands, it was formed by volcanic activity, so boasts a similarly rugged landscape making it an excellent spot for hiking. There is good infrastructure on the main island, and tourism is popular here (mainly around Funchal in the south) – so expect plenty of amenities, nightlife and great food!

Because of its rugged cliffs there aren’t really any big beaches on Madeira, but some sand has been imported to make an artificial beach at Calheata to the west of Funchal. If you really want a sandy beach make your way to Porto Santo – a smaller island about 2.5 hours away by ferry – it’s well worth the trip if you have the time.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Visit Madeira (@visitmadeira) on

We think Madeira is the perfect blend of the things we love about the Canary Islands and the Azores – the creature comforts that more tourism brings, plus the opportunity to get out, explore the outdoors and take in the stunning scenery.

Tenerife or Gran Canaria – which island to choose for your holiday

I will try to compare the two most popular islands of the Canary archipelago – Tenerife and Gran Canaria based on the results of a month of travel to these islands in winter and early spring of this year. Which one is better, which one is more suitable for a sea holiday, and which one is more interesting for an educational journey.

A frequent question on the forums is where it is better to go on vacation to Tenerife or Gran Canaria, which of these islands to choose for recreation and travel. Where it is cheaper, more interesting sights, on which of the islands the beaches are better and how is the weather there. I will try to answer all these questions.

Popularity

Despite the fact that tourism in the Canary Islands began in Gran Canaria, now Tenerife is much more popular than . Gran Canaria has no chance here. Although in some positions Gran Canaria outperforms Tenerife .

If you are a typical tourist who expects good beaches, amusement parks, a variety of natural landscapes and historic towns from a holiday, you are in Tenerife.

If you have already been to Tenerife and you want more or a little different emotions, if you don’t really like to relax against the backdrop of a thousand compatriots, and Las Americas beach in places resembles Crimea or Anapa, then you are better off at Gran Canary s.

Where nature is better – Tenerife or Gran Canaria

Arid and warm south with little rainfall and eternally spring, green and blooming north with frequent rains in winter – spring. Completely two different climates on the same island. This also applies to Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Feel free to put an equal sign, we did not notice any advantages over each other. All deviations in the weather are nothing more than a statistical error.

Historical villages

In both Tenerife and Gran Canaria, most of the historic villages are either in the north of these islands or in the mountains closer to the center of the island.

Tenerife is the village of Masca, the town of Garachico, La Orotava and others. At Gran Canaria – Terror, Firgash, Arucas, Aguimes.

Approximate parity, I think. It is worth noting that the villages of Tenerife are more widely known and promoted than their counterparts in Gran Canaria. We were equally pleased to walk on both islands.

Attractions of Tenerife and Gran Canaria

Both islands are rich in locations that you should definitely visit. Both islands are similar in climate and variety of natural areas. But the devil is in the details.

The coolest sights of Tenerife are the Anaga National Park in the north of the island and the city of Puerto de la Cruz. There are no analogues to these locations in Gran Canaria.

Number two in Tenerife in my ranking is the national park and the highest peak of Tenerife – the extinct volcano Teide. Incredibly beautiful is not even the volcano itself, but the roads to it, of which there are at least three and all are worthy of your attention.

Gran Canaria will answer this with the highest point of the island – Roca Nublo peak (1813 m.) and the road winding in the clouds to it. And we liked this location much more than the hyped Teide volcano (3718 m) in Tenerife.

Only in Gran Canaria you can climb from a warm beach to the clouds in a cool and humid forest in one day, walk among the clouds and return.

The main city of Gran Canaria is Las Palmas, much more interesting than the capital of the Canary Islands, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, but much inferior to the city Puerto de la Cruz which is in the north of Tenerife.

Top attraction of Gran Canaria – sand dunes Maspolamas , a unique place that has no analogues in Tenerife. Remotely, it can be considered an analogue of the dry and windy El Medano, but there it is a little different.

It was in order to see the famous dunes and a piece of desert near the ocean that we included Gran Canaria in the route and did not regret it at all.

Los Gigantes cliffs in Tenerife is another cool attraction and iconic place in Tenerife. In terms of meaning, the rocks near the village of Agaete in Gran Canaria are very similar to it – the same black sheer cliffs descending into the sea and colorful fishing restaurants on the shore. As for me, Los Gigantes has become too poppy place due to the dominance of large hotels and tourist cafes in the area. Agaete is still holding on – it is relatively quiet and very comfortable here. Of course, there are tourists, since Agaete is also a small port where the Fred Olsen ferry arrives from Santa Cruz (Tenerife) – but their number is rather background than critical.

To sum up comparison of attractions in Tenerife and Gran Canaria , then Tenerife is the clear leader in terms of the number of places worth seeing. Gran Canaria beckons with its dunes to Maspalomas and hiking in the mountains of the central part of the island. Tenerife is the nature of the north, Anaga National Park and Teide Peak, historic and cozy Puerto de la Cruz and surfing locations in the south of the island.

It remains to compare the beaches and entertainment on the islands, and here everything is quite simple and clear.

Entertainment

Without going into details, I will say that the absolute leader is Tenerife . Here are the top attractions Loro Park and Siam Amusement Park and many smaller local amusement parks. Gran Canaria simply has nothing to answer. Holiday World in Maspalomas, several water parks in popular tourist locations and the theme park “Hangar 37” are far inferior to their counterparts in Tenerife, although you will not be bored.

Where are the best beaches – Tenerife or Gran Canaria

Whatever you say, but our mass tourist goes to places like the Canary Islands not for history and hiking in the mountains, but for the beaches and the sea. I love the Canary Islands very much, but I have never considered and will not consider them a place for a beach holiday. The ocean is rather cool than warm, although you can swim even in January – the ocean, thanks to the Gulf Stream and other climatic features, warms up to 18-21 degrees. But when did it stop our people. Going to the sea and not swimming is not about us, I mean all of us in the broadest sense of the word, and not Tanya and me specifically.

So, the beaches of Tenerife are mainly the south of the island, where dozens of beaches of different shape, appearance and color of sand are concentrated. I have already written in detail about the best beaches of Tenerife, I will not repeat myself.

As for Gran Canaria , this is of course Las Canteras beach, which is located in the capital of the island – the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Strengths – a wide strip of golden sand, several kilometers long and the longest promenade in Gran Canaria with cafes and restaurants. Remotely it can be compared with Las Americas in Tenerife. But, again, Las Canteras is less touristy, and is in a lively Canarian city with locals, rather than the artificial tourist formation that Las Americas is.

Of the beautiful beaches of Gran Canaria I would single out Puerto de Mogan and the beaches near the city of Puerto Rico. There is also Inglés Beach, but it is mostly populated by nudists and gay people. I have nothing against these communities, but I can not recommend it to absolutely everyone.

Where there are more tourists

Statistics show that the proportion of tourists visiting Tenerife and Gran Canaria is approximately 2 to 1.5. That is, for 2 million tourists in Tenerife, there are 1.5 million tourists who prefer Gran Canaria.

The difference is insignificant, and given that Tenerife is slightly larger than Gran Canaria, there is no difference in numbers at all.

Just tourists in Tenerife are concentrated in several places – Las Americas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, there are a lot of tourists on Teide because of its promotion, the rest are scattered over the north, east and west of the island.

Tourists in Gran Canaria live in the main capital of Las Palmas and in the Maspalamos Dunes area in the south. The remaining locations of Gran Canaria are practically free from the tourist invasion, including the central mountainous part of the island with very steep hiking trails.

There are much more Russian-speaking tourists in Tenerife than in Gran Canaria, where Europeans over 40 years of age predominate. Gran Canaria is generally quieter than Tenerife. If this is important to you, make a choice in favor of Gran Canaria, you can’t go wrong.

Where is the price higher

This is a very simple question. The price level is about the same. Tenerife has a slight advantage – due to high competition, prices here are lower than in Gran Canaria.

At Tenerife you can find free parking almost everywhere, at Gran Canaria you will most likely have to pay.

House prices follow the same trend, in Gran Canaria prices are 10-15 percent higher than in Tenerife. Either it happened historically, or again because of the ratio of supply and demand, but living in Tenerife is a little, but cheaper.

How long does it take to see these islands

Tenerife is bigger, there are more interesting locations and attractions than in Gran Canaria. It will take at least 10 days to see at least all the most important things in Tenerife.

Garn Canaria can be traveled all over in 3 days. We spent a week there and visited all the locations marked on tourist maps, traveler reports and Google maps. That is, they literally drove into every hole.

In Tenerife, three weeks were not enough to see everything. That is, we saw the most important thing, we alternated active trips with passive recreation on the ocean, but there were several white spots that were insignificant in terms of volume.

The ideal format for a trip to Tenerife and Gran Canaria is one to three. That is, the time spent in Tenerife can be safely divided by three and this will be enough to relax in Gran Canaria. This applies to active travelers. You can spend time passively for as long as you like on both islands, if you have money and desire.

Our review of Tenerife and Gran Canaria

Tenerife is the more poppy south and the harsh and beautiful north of the island. Gran Canaria leaves a pleasant impression, but it is a bit old fashioned. In some places it seems that time stopped here in the 70s of the last century.

Better infrastructure in Tenerife , Gran Canaria even in its capital Las Palmas is rather shabby in places.

Both islands have an airport, in Tenerife there are even two of them – southern and northern.

The roads are excellent everywhere. At Tenerife there are simply a lot more of them in terms of sensations. Roads in the mountains are better of course in Tenerife. In Gran Canaria, you can easily go to the primer, but this is more the exception than the rule.

At Gran Canaria there is more local color than you will ever see when relaxing in the south of Tenerife. But north of Tenerife is out of competition.

For action, clubs, beaches, entertainment – to the south of Tenerife!

For nature, hiking and local food, go to Gran Canaria or North Tenerife.

Beach holidays are good on both Tenerife and Gran Canaria , but Tenerife has more choice of good and not crowded beaches. The water temperature is 0.5 – 1 degree higher in Tenerife, but perhaps this was a feature of the period in which we rested. I do not insist on the advantage of Tenerife here.

The choice of housing, the choice of location for recreation and nicer prices – at Tenerife .

Tenerife fun, lively, modern island, Gran Canaria leaves a feeling of old-fashioned and remote from civilization. At the same time, there is not much contrast, but the devil is in the details, isn’t it?

Ideally, you need to visit both Tenerife and Gran Canaria , just keep the proportions of the duration of the rest “three to one” in favor of Tenerife and then you are guaranteed to enjoy it.

If you were going to visit both of these islands, I would start with Gran Canaria and end up in Tenerife. In this case, the impressions will grow and there will be something to remember and compare with. If there is only one island in the plans and you are coming here for the first time, then of course Tenerife.

Where to look for hotels in the Canary Islands

We traditionally search on Booking.com in the direction of Tenerife or Gran Canaria .

For several years I have also been using the Hotels Combined (Room Guru) hotel search and special offers system, there are often discounts and cheap accommodation offers – you can save up to 30% of the cost.

Find suitable accommodation in Tenerife >>

Find suitable accommodation in Gran Canaria >>

Where to buy a cheap ticket to the Canary Islands

I have been using aviasales for a long time and successfully – it is a search engine that looks for the best deals, including on low-cost airlines. There were no problems with him and no. I can recommend.

When it is better to relax on Canary Islands

Miscellaneous »Miscellaneous» When it is better to relax on the Canary Islands

when it is best to rest on Canary Islands

The Canaries are a volcanic “necklace” of seven large and six small islands belonging to Spain. And although the number of islands easily adds up to a damn dozen, the Canary Islands are considered a true tourist paradise. Actually, this piece of land in the Atlantic Ocean is famous not only for canaries. And it doesn’t matter that the name of the archipelago is translated from Latin as not quite romantic.
dog islands .” Meteorologists even awarded these places the status of “the best climate on the planet”, and this despite the fact that one of the islands has 28 (!) microclimatic zones!

Climatic zones of the Canary Islands

Despite the proximity to Africa, the climate of the Canary Islands differs significantly from the sultry continent. The archipelago is dominated
tropical trade wind climate , it is dry and warm throughout the year. Interestingly, the weather over the Canary Islands is shaped by the interaction of African dry harmattan winds and wet trade winds from the Atlantic.

For your information! The Canary Islands is an area where modern technology and renewable energy reign supreme. Here they successfully use the energy of wind, water and the sun for the functioning of the entire infrastructure of the islands. Desalination of sea water for drinking, using wind to power an entire airport, or even sandy beaches from the ocean floor – the Canaries honor nature and contribute to the future.

Individual islands and their clusters differ in climatic features. In particular, the islands in the southern part of the archipelago are drier, while the northern Canaries are distinguished by wet weather and lush tropical forests.

  • The highest islands of the archipelago (Tenerife, Palma, Gran Canaria) differ from the others in their relief, which creates a special weather here. At the foot of the volcanoes – warm and dry, but the higher, the cooler the climate becomes. Even in summer, you can see a snow cover near the hills of volcanoes. Because of this, the largest of the islands of the archipelago are called separate miniature continents.
  • The Eastern Islands are drier than the others because they are affected by the sultry winds of the Sahara.
  • Another influence is exerted by the Atlantic Ocean, in particular its currents. This influence is especially felt in the southern islands.

On the main tourist spot of the Canaries, Tenerife – eternal spring. Temperature fluctuations no more than 7 degrees in both directions . The second largest island, Gran Canaria, is not colder than +20°C in winter and no higher than +30°C in summer. There is almost no rain in Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura has the most stable temperature throughout the year, but there are winds that create ideal conditions for waveriders.

Tourist seasons of the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are amazing in their weather. Year-round “plus”, the constant temperature of the water in the lagoons, the bright sun and the absence of scorching heat – all this creates excellent conditions for tourism regardless of the division into seasons.

On average, the thermometers in the Canary Islands show a comfortable +22°C. There is no sultry heat and sub-zero temperatures – the difference between the peak values does not exceed 10 degrees, which allows a person to quickly adapt upon arrival in the Canary Islands and not feel temperature changes during the day, night and change of seasons.

The best “beach” time is from May to October. The high season is August-October, when the water is warmed up to the maximum. In the winter months there is a small “rainy season” – it’s only 5-6 days when a tropical storm can pass through the islands. Spring and autumn are the off-season, when prices are lower, but the weather continues to create conditions for a comfortable stay.

Monthly weather in the Canary Islands

January

In January, as such, the rainy season, at this time the islands receive more precipitation than usual. Average temperature +23°C, water +19°C . Windy. Time for New Year’s tours for a bronze tan, great diving and surfing.

Note! For windsurfing and kitesurfing there is a special place in the Canary Islands called LeocadioMachado beach.

February

Air temperature around +20°C, water +19°C. The warmest place is in Gran Canaria, cooler in Lanzarote.

Note! Time for carnivals and festivals. For two weeks, all the Canaries literally dance and sing.

Interesting! The Canary Islands attract over 13 million tourists annually to their volcanic beaches. Local authorities are even considering introducing some restrictions. The fact is that the joy of ever-growing tourism income cannot hide the disappointment of human harm to such a fragile ecosystem of the archipelago.

March

In Tenerife +21°C during the day, and in Gran Canaria +22°C. Daylight hours are lengthening. It’s time to book flights and hotel rooms for the summer period.

Fact! The Canary Islands belong to Spain for centuries. Accordingly, this is Europe, although territorially – almost Africa. Nevertheless, almost everything here is European – roads, service, maintenance … and prices.

April

The weather is getting even more stable. Stable +22°C during the day, water temperature +18°C. Discount time. Airlines are starting to sell tickets at reduced prices.

Fact! Residents of Great Britain, Italy and a number of Scandinavian countries can afford to visit the Canary Islands. Germans and French in recent years have made up a significant part of the tourists coming to the islands. What is not surprising – the European resort is chosen mainly by Europeans.

May

In May, those who want to save money go to the islands. Daytime temperatures up to +24°C in both Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The water in the ocean warms up to +20°C. And in Fuerteventura, the waverider season begins – this is the time for great surfing!

It is interesting! Many entertainments are available on the Canary Islands, but the most interesting of them are associated with volcanoes. You can not only soak up the prickly volcanic black “sand”, walk 17 kilometers along the volcanic tunnel, look inside the crater of a real volcano, but even taste dishes prepared “hot-heat” of volcanic lava.

June

There are already more tourists, the islands are preparing for the high season. The temperature rises during the day to +26°C, the water is already +21°C.

Fact! The Canary Islands are of volcanic origin. Everything under the feet and water is the result of the activity of powerful volcanoes: from black “sand”, lava fields and sheer cliffs to volcanic deserts. The most famous dormant volcano in the archipelago is Teide, and the largest inhabited crater is Bandama.

July

The start of the real tourist season. The thermometers show +28°C, the ocean pleases with a stable +21°C. Gran Canaria is traditionally warmer by one degree.

August

A hot time is coming – the weather on the islands is determined by the breath of Africa. Up to +33°C in the shade. In Tenerife +29°C, water temperature up to +23°C.

September

Time for wellness tours. The heat subsides, a comfortable temperature is established. +26+28°C during the day, water +22+23°C.

October

By the end of the month, prices begin to decline, signaling the end of the high season. Showers are possible on Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma. Least rainy days in Lanzarote.

November

At this time, the water and air temperatures are almost equal. +22°C and +21°C respectively. The island of La Palma has more rainy days than other parts of the archipelago.

December

“Velvet season” – the weather is comfortable, the prices are low. For those who want to visit the Canaries, are not afraid of some weather quirks, and are on a tight budget, this is the perfect time. Most rainy days are in Tenerife and La Palma. It is better to go at this time to Fuerteventura or Lanzarote.

On a note! Due to the volcanic origin of the islands, seismic activity is very noticeable in the region. But local authorities pay special attention to this process, a special warning system has been developed, and, in an emergency, all measures are taken to ensure the safety of local residents and numerous tourists.

What clothes to take with you

Sunglasses, sunscreen, bathing suits and a wide-brimmed hat – in the Canaries year-round sun, warm water and a refreshing breeze. In winter, it will be cool and windy in the evenings, take jeans and a long-sleeve sweater. A warm sweater will also come in handy in case of a storm. In summer, do not forget that, at first glance, the gentle sun can also burn with its rays – African winds can be unexpectedly insidious.

9. Soar over giant rocks, Tenerife

From a bird’s eye view, magnificent views of the cliffs of Los Gigantes, the Atlantic coast with its enticing beaches, dense forests, the green mountains of Anaga and the Teide National Park open up. The cheapest is a 20-kilometer flight over the beaches of the south coast.

The waters of Hierro Island are considered the best diving in Spain. The underwater world here is perhaps richer and more diverse than the surface. Off the coast, apart from hundreds of small fish, you can see stingrays, moray eels with sea turtles, and whale sharks with dolphins.

Explore this smallest island in the archipelago between dives. Climb up to the Mirador de las Playas viewpoint for fantastic ocean views. Holidays in Tenerife by months.

When is the best time to go to Tenerife.

The unique climatic conditions of the island give tourists the opportunity to visit the island at almost any time of the year. No wonder they say about Tenerife that eternal spring has settled on it. There is practically no rain here, the mountains provide reliable protection from the wind, and the water temperature never drops below 19 degrees. The landscape of the island has an attractive magic that makes you come back here again and again. Family holidays with children, a youth trip for those who want to have noisy fun, a calm and comfortable vacation for a wealthy businessman – any tourist will find a suitable vacation option in Tenerife.

Climate Tenerife

The island lies entirely in a subtropical climate, but has about 30 microclimatic zones, so different places on the coast may differ in climatic conditions. In general terms, we can say that the north is cooler and wetter, and the south and west, respectively, are warmer. Rains here are very rare, and snow can only be seen at the top of the Teide volcano.

Temperature fluctuations throughout the year range from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the average values do not fall below +21 and do not exceed +27, which makes holidays in Tenerife comfortable throughout the year.

At night it gets a little cooler, but temperature fluctuations are not significant at all. For the evening, just take a light jacket or sweatshirt with you.

There is very little rain in the southern resorts of Tenerife, most of the precipitation falls in the north and in the center of the island near the Teide volcano. In Tenerife, rains, if they happen, are very weak and short-lived – it will drip a little and that’s it.

When is the best time to go on holiday in Tenerife?

The high season in Tenerife lasts from June to October. The largest number of tourists visit the island from July to August. The best time to visit Tenerife is September and October. Thanks to the blowing ocean breeze and low air humidity, there is no exhausting heat. The Atlantic Ocean during these months is maximally warmed up to 23 degrees and swimming in it is a pleasure. There are noticeably fewer tourists than in July-August. Prices, of course, are growing a little, but not so much as to refuse to rest because of this.

Low season in Tenerife – this concept is almost inapplicable for this resort, we can only talk about a slight decrease in the influx of tourists, which usually occurs in January and April. During these months the water is too cool for comfortable swimming.

Holidays on the island of Tenerife are good in their own way at any time of the year. Here you can find exactly the option that suits you.

Beach season in Tenerife

At the height of the swimming season in Tenerife in September and October, the water temperature is between 20-24 degrees. You can sunbathe in Tenerife throughout the year.

In this heavenly place, you can find a lot of interesting things to do besides swimming, but for fans of beach holidays, we hasten to inform you: people swim here all year round! Indeed, even in the January off-season, the lowest temperature of ocean water is 19 degrees. Of course, not everyone will like such water, but in this case, 4-5 star hotels in Tenerife have heated pools.

Tenerife in spring

Tenerife’s spring state is felt throughout the year. By the way, the Coming of Spring – another of the many holidays that, among other things, the island is so rich in, is celebrated in the spring, on March 21st. March to May is warm, mild, dry weather. Light rain is rare in the north. Sunny during the day, slightly cool at night. Great sunbathing time, visiting various parks and attractions.

Tenerife in summer

Unlike most southern European resorts, Tenerife does not get very hot in summer. The maximum temperature is usually observed in August and is about 30 degrees Celsius, which, coupled with low humidity, gives quite a comfortable feeling. The days are sunny, and the sun is not “evil”, but suitable for sunbathing. Rain is possible only in the mountains, and even then no more than once a month. The water warms up to an ideal 22 degrees. For lovers of sports recreation on the water, the northern breeze blowing will come in handy! Summer holidays in Tenerife have another plus – a lot of fruits are grown on the island, which just ripen in the summer months. There are many tourists.

Tenerife in autumn

The autumn season on the island is slightly different from the summer season. During the day everything is also hot, up to +25. Evenings and nights have become cooler, the temperature can drop to +17, so you should slightly warm up in clothes. But the water, as usual, is warm, the sun is gentle, so you can safely run to the beach. The amount of rain increases slightly – up to five per month on average, especially in the northwestern regions. This is due to the higher humidity of the microclimate, so in autumn the demand is increased for the resorts of the southern part of the island: Costa Adeje, Las Americas, Los Cristianos. In any case, autumn in Tenerife, with its sun, bathing ocean and natural beauty, compares favorably with the dull European slush, which manifests itself in the form of a good tourist flow compared to other resorts in Europe.

Tenerife in winter

The winter months are more like the usual not so hot summer. In the evening and at night, the coolness is felt more noticeably, but even a light sweater already saves from it. There is a little more rain, but they are short-lived, which is called “a light summer rain” or “it dripped and passed.” In winter, lovers of discounts are very fond of relaxing – prices in Tenerife are reduced by about a quarter. The ocean is not so inviting for swimming – about +19 degrees, which significantly reduces the flow of tourists. When planning a trip, do not forget about the strong winds of the north coast, especially when you are going on an excursion to one of the wonderful National Parks of Tenerife. Dress warmly.

It’s time for holidays in Tenerife

Tenerife, as mentioned above, is under Spanish jurisdiction, respectively, and the inhabitants of the island adhere to the Catholic religion. These two facts explain the presence of a large number of church holidays, which are celebrated, however, quite secularly, with carnivals, processions, dances and other fiesta. Of the brightest, it is worth noting the “Holy Week”, which takes place before Easter. At this time, colorful processions of believers with religious symbols can be observed throughout the island. The Corpus Christi flower festival should also be noted, when large cities are covered with whole carpets of flowers. The celebration of the Day of Our Lady of Candelar (she is considered the patroness of the Canary Islands) looks very colorful, it is celebrated on August 14 and 15. And, of course, the Day of the Canary Islands – May 30, which is happening as violently and brightly as possible! Do not forget about the New Year and Merry Christmas, which are also honored on the island.

Carnival season in Tenerife

Peaks in February. It is called “Mardi Gras”. The largest actions are held in the capital of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The dry presentation was deliberately chosen, because any, even the most enthusiastic, replete with exclamation marks and other ahas, is still not able to convey even a small clip of the ongoing carnival riot. It’s just a must see! It is not for nothing that the Tenerife carnival is considered the second most beautiful in the world, right after the Brazilian one, which takes place in Rio de Janeiro. After the unbridled fun of the carnival, its end is marked by Great Lent.

Monthly weather in Tenerife with tourist reviews:

Tenerife In autumn, winter, spring, summer . Tenerife is located off the west coast of North Africa.

Its delightful golden and gray beaches and beautiful towns create a huge contrast to the picturesque mountain villages, volcanic desert landscapes and lush green surroundings. Find out on the Tour Calendar why it is best to go to the island for a vacation in July, August, September and October.

Holidays on the island of “eternal spring”, gently washed by the gentle Atlantic waters, is the blue dream of millions of tourists

Tourist season in Tenerife

The truly magnificent climate of Tenerife allows you to travel here throughout the year, even in winter, and not just like that, but with a bathing component. The island is replete with atypical landscapes, varying depending on its location, from immersed in fat greenery in the north to sun-kissed in the arid south. It is also attractive to the spoiled traveler with the cosmic poetics of solidified lava. In addition, Tenerife is also attractive with a stunning coastline with gorgeous beaches, banana plantations, excellent shops, restaurants and first-class hotels. Families with children come here, older people who prefer quieter resorts, as well as party youth going to noisy cities.

High season in Tenerife

While in Mallorca the peak season is in July and August, Tenerife is hit by a tourist wave only in September and October. During these two months, the warmest water temperature of the Atlantic Ocean is observed. In addition to high prices and a large crowd of people, the high season has no drawbacks. After all, as you already understood, the weather on the island is never very hot.

Low season in Tenerife

Low season and Tenerife are incompatible concepts. But still, a slightly smaller number of tourists on the island happens from December to January and from March to April.

Beach season in Tenerife

Tenerife swims all year round, but this process will be most pleasant from April to November

It’s very simple: the swimming season on the island lasts all year round. And even in January, the minimum water temperature in the ocean will be 19 ° C. This is really the “blue dream” of any average resident of Russia.

Celebration time in Tenerife

The islanders really enjoy being part of the many festivities

At the end of every January, Tenerife hosts the music festival “De Música de Canarias”. Another highlight on the island is the “Holy Week” preceding Easter. At this time, many religious processions take place throughout the island. May is celebrated in all major cities and villages with the “Feast of the Cross”. In mid-June, at the Corpus Christi festival, locals lay out entire flower carpets on city streets. The Summer Solstice in Tenerife is associated with the feast of St. Juana is something like our Ivan Kupala with symbolic jumps over fires. August 14 and 15 are the two most significant days for all the Canary Islands, as they call the patron saint of the Canary Islands – Our Lady of Candelar. Christmas and New Year in Tenerife are, in general, home holidays. Some islanders at this time go out to the squares of the cities, have fun together, dance and enjoy the lights of colorful fireworks.

Carnival season in Tenerife

The winter carnival in Tenerife is world-famous

Those who find it difficult to imagine the significance and scope of the February carnival “Mardi Gras” in Tenerife, we will answer this way: with its pomp and scale, it is second only to the Brazilian Carnival. This real carnival fever absorbs absolutely all the cities of Tenerife, but, in particular, its capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The unbridled fun begins with the selection of the Queen of the Festival, and then continues with musical concerts, street entertainment, and the consumption of traditional Canarian dishes and drinks in large quantities. The festival ends with the beginning of Lent.

Climate in Tenerife

The climate in Tenerife is subtropical with warm weather throughout the year. However, weather conditions vary significantly depending on the location on the island. The south and west will be the warmest, while the northern tip will be coolest. It sometimes rains on the island, but there is no distinct wet season as such. Unless in December and January it rains a little more often. The difference in annual temperatures is insignificant: from 15 °C to 25 °C.

Tenerife in the spring

Spring in Tenerife – warm, sunny, though a little rainy

Spring in Tenerife – in itself, this phrase is associated not with the season, but with the stable characteristic of the island. After all, as you know, spring is the year-round state of the island. So what is the weather like at this time? Partly rainy, with warm sunny days and slightly cool nights. During this period, there is a slow process of increasing the temperature of air and water – 21°C and 20°C, respectively. A wonderful time to visit Loro Parque, independent trips around the island and sunbathing.

Temperature and weather in Tenerife in spring

Tenerife in the summer

The weather on the island is amazing in summer: not hot and very good

What makes the summer in Tenerife so good is the cool weather, characterized by low levels of humidity. Only 24°C-25°C at 22°C water temperature. Ideal “proportions” of a resort holiday. The level of solar activity reaches as much as 10 hours a day. But the sun is not aggressive, but, on the contrary, gentle. The central mountainous regions can be a bit rainy. The often northerly breeze from the ocean provides ample opportunities for a variety of water sports.

Holidays in the Canary Islands: how, when, where

The Canary Islands is an archipelago of 7 large and many small islands. At the same time, most tourists who come here on vacation manage not to look further than Tenerife. And completely in vain.

The Canary Islands is an archipelago of 7 large and many small islands. At the same time, most tourists who come here on vacation manage not to look further than Tenerife. And completely in vain. Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Hierro, Homer and La Palma also have something to marvel at. At a minimum, breathtaking scenery, in which the main violin is played by the Atlantic Ocean, the famous lava fields and beaches with volcanic sand. And as a maximum – the same worthy service as “in the center”, the presence of sports schools and meetings with outlandish representatives of the local animal kingdom.

When to go

Tenerife was nicknamed the island of eternal spring because of the consistently warm weather without extreme pluses and minuses, which has been here for 12 months. The same definition applies to other islands of the archipelago. The unique climate of the Canaries is formed by several factors: close Africa gives dry heat, the trade winds slightly dispel and moisten it, ocean currents relieve the rainy seasons.

You can come here for vacation all year round. Well, except that from November to May it will be a little colder on land, and you can’t swim in the ocean, but showers and cold weather are not expected. If you need a real summer, a ticket should be taken from June to October.

The south of the archipelago (Gran Canaria, Hierro, southern Tenerife) is always warmer than the north. Here and in the east it is drier. Humid in the north and west.

Beach holidays

Beaches in the Canary Islands can be chosen not only by the degree of privacy, the convenience for sports or the type of surface (ordinary sand, volcanic sand, stone). You can choose by color! Do you like white and light yellow? Onward to Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria. Do you like noble “gold” or total black? Tenerife has both.

Areas with black and golden sand are located in Tenerife near the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. There are two more black sand beaches in Puerto de la Cruz: Playa de Martianes is wilder and more picturesque, waves interfere with swimming here, Playa de Jardin with pebbly areas is surrounded by green gardens and is famous for its excellent infrastructure.

Tourists rightly prefer the south of Tenerife: here are all the amenities, entertainment and protection from the waves.

The beaches of Fuerteventura – Cofete, Playa Blanca and others are beautiful, but windy, so they are loved by surfers. Black sand in Fuerteventura on Gran Tarajal beach, the most beautiful landscapes are on Corralejo.

The best beaches of Gran Canaria are in the south: soft sand, few waves, but there is a light breeze. They go to the north of the island in search of picturesque bays and surfing. In Lanzarote with children, it is recommended to relax on the beach of the town of Playa Blanca, and look for fantastic places for photos in the north, in Papagayo Bay.

The beaches of the Canaries are free for nudists.

Active holidays

The Canary Islands are much more popular among active vacationers than among classic beachgoers. It’s all about the winds and the rather violent temper of the Atlantic Ocean, which gives a magical wave. Thanks to this, surfers in these places are not transferred all year round: schools work for them, organize surfing tours, and hold competitions. Beginners try not to move away from the beaches of Las Americas. But experienced surfers in search of big and difficult waves go to the northern parts of the large islands, as well as to Lanzarote, Hierro and La Palma.

The best season for boarding is October-February. The diving season lasts all year.

Yachting enthusiasts also go to the archipelago. Boat trips along large and small islands, colorful beaches, volcanoes can last a week – there are plenty of picturesque places here. No less beautiful is the underwater world of the Canary Islands. Divers are looking for encounters with turtles and whales in the Hierro Marine Reserve, sunken ships off the coast of Gran Canaria, underwater arches and tunnels in the Fuerteventura region, and almost all of this together off Tenerife.

Active holidays in the Canary Islands

Excursion holidays

“Excursion” in the archipelago is filled mainly due to the wealth of local nature. All the most delicious and different – of course, in Tenerife. Here is the Teide volcano in the reserve of the same name with an observatory, and parks of eagles, parrots and monkeys, and laurel forests, which may have seen more dinosaurs. There are historical buildings on the “main Canarian”: the mysterious pyramids of Guimar, San Miguel Castle, the Candelaria Basilica and others.

Gran Canaria is ready to boast the Columbus House Museum, Crocodile Park, the caldera of an ancient volcano, its own mini-desert, karting and flying clubs. In Fuerteventura, you can stroll through the cactus garden or the Camel Oasis, see huge herds of goats (they are recognized as the symbol of the island) and real mills, as well as another Canarian mini-desert.

Lanzarote is considered a continuous reserve of volcanoes with lava fields, extinct calderas, volcanic caves. One of them is a real concert hall.

Do you like Subtlety? Let’s be friends (post only on business).

Holidays with children

Little travelers will be delighted with the local wildlife, whose representatives can be looked at, listened to, and sometimes even touched. But the Canary Islands are not suitable for a beach holiday with children. However, if you choose the most equipped and popular beaches (the south of Tenerife or Gran Canaria, where there are more breakwaters), be careful when playing at the edge of the ocean or generally keep a respectful distance from it, the holidays will be successful.

There are many more beaches (albeit with black sand, which, by the way, heats up more), the children will be interested in local amusement parks with attractions and water slides. There are several parks at once in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. On the first one – “Aqualand”, “Siam Park” and “Loro Park” with tigers and dolphins, on the second – Ocean Fun Park, Holiday Land and others. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote also have a water park.

Diving in the Canary Islands

Trip cost

In high season, a week-long beach tour to the Canary Islands will cost from 1700 EUR for two if you stay in a 3 * hotel, and from 2100 EUR if you stay in a five-star hotel. The price includes flight, accommodation and half board. Adding excursions will make the tour more expensive by at least 70 EUR. If you plan your trip on your own, you can save 100–300 EUR. The prices on the page are for September 2019

Canaries Holiday Guide

The Canary Islands are made up of seven main islands. Of these, in terms of the number of visitors, the most popular are Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The islands of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro receive significantly fewer tourists, with the annual number of visitors not millions, but hundreds of thousands.

1. Tenerife

Tenerife’s beaches are the main reason people visit the island.

One of the most popular tourist destinations for British and Germans. Mountains rise in the center of the island. Teide is the third highest volcano in the world in terms of height from the seabed.

Highlights

  • Tenerife’s beaches are the main reason people visit the island.
  • Explore Mt. Teide National Park.
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site listed as one of the 12 Treasures of Spain.
  • Whale and dolphin watching, big game fishing, water sports and more are some of the main attractions on the island.
  • Tenerife has an excellent tourist infrastructure, accommodation options, amenities, transfers, etc.

Lights

  • Tenerife, with almost six million people visiting every year, is not a place for a relaxing holiday.
  • Don’t expect to find authentic Canarian culture anywhere near major tourist routes.

Who is it for?

Tenerife is the place for everyone looking for a classic beach holiday, whether families, couples or groups looking to party. There are accommodation options for all tastes, something to keep everyone busy, and the national park offers an obvious day trip if you get tired of lounging in the sun.

Where to stay?

The most famous resorts are Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. Both have a wide range of hotels and decent beaches. Of the two, Playa de las Americas has the busiest nightlife.

2. Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is the place for everyone who is looking for a beach holiday.

Similar in many ways to Tenerife – indeed, there is a strong rivalry between the two islands – Gran Canaria is slightly smaller and receives slightly fewer visitors, but some consider it a more demanding choice.

Highlights

  • The otherworldly dunes of Maspalomas are also shortlisted for Spain’s 12 Treasures.
  • The beaches of Gran Canaria are considered better than the beaches of Tenerife.
  • Gran Canaria is known as a party destination and probably offers a better night out than the rest of the islands.

Lamps

  • Another victim of his success, the island often seems crowded.
  • Like Tenerife, Gran Canaria has a reputation as a major center of mass tourism.

Who is it for?

Gran Canaria, like Tenerife, is the place to be for anyone looking for a beach holiday. There are family-friendly resorts, places that couples will love, and plenty of after-sun activities to please those who want to party. Maspalomas is also a popular destination for the LGBT community.

Where to stay?

Playa del Inglés is the most famous place to stay if you like to party. Puerto Rico has a nice beach and plenty of accommodation and food options, making it a good option for families.

3. Lanzarote

Arid landscape of Lanzarote with beautiful beaches

Known for its arid desert scenery, Lanzarote does not receive as many tourists as Tenerife or Gran Canaria. With less local population, it offers a much less crazy place to stay and more room to breathe.

Highlights

  • Lanzarote’s volcanic desert scenery is one of the most striking in the Canary Islands.
  • Less visited than Tenerife or Gran Canaria and more sparsely populated.
  • Visit Timanfaya National Park to experience the island’s volcanic landscape.
  • More and more of a destination for hiking, cycling, surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing and more.

Lamps

  • The landscape may seem too dry and lifeless to some.

Who is this for?

Lanzarote caters to the needs of all types of travellers, including couples, families and the more active. Even though there is a nightlife, Lanzarote is more suitable for those looking for a laid-back, sombre holiday style.

Where to stay?

The Canary Islands – but not as you know them

For many, the Canary Islands are like a beloved cardigan – a safe, familiar but unremarkable item of winter warmth.

In truth, very, very few people – even Telegraph readers – really know this subtropical archipelago 62 miles off the southern tip of Morocco’s west coast. If they did, cardigans would be on the catwalks and the Canary Islands would comfortably top the list of most popular holidays.

You might think that the Canary Islands are just a place to travel. But where else can you jump from prehistoric jungle to desert, experience thrills and top-notch water sports, whale watching and Michelin-starred cuisine – at January?

Let’s start with numbers. There are seven inhabited islands, right? Not properly. There are eight of them, including Lanzarote’s sandy neighbor, La Graciosa. You may ask, can you stay there? Yes. But more on that later.

Isn’t that terribly sedate? It depends on how you feel about underground lava tubes to explore, pyramids to explore, ancient forests to patrol, giant lizards to spot, and a night sky so clear you could swear it was a giant Imax screen. Then there are award-winning wines, A-list golf courses and hillside villages that could be paired with Shangri-La, as well as volcano barbecues and amazing local food served in underground restaurants. . And we haven’t even mentioned the beaches yet.

Each island is unique; the only problem is deciding which is for you. Read on to find out.

Tenerife
Best for families

Who’s coming?

Tenerife is so multi-faceted, fun and eager to please everyone, it would be easier to list the non-skiers. Study your fellow travelers on the plane and you will probably even notice a little bit of spandex, lurex, Gore-Tex and Rolex. These days, the island attracts almost the entire spectrum of travellers, with its chic family resorts, world-class attractions such as the water adventure park Siam Park and the animal-filled Loro Park, as well as a network of hiking and cycling trails. If only there were ski lifts on Mount Teide.

Why go now?

It has never been easier to get to the largest and most populous Canary Islands, where more than a dozen UK regional airports serve Tenerife.

Gastronomic restaurants are now popular on the island, and the Michelin Guide to Spain and Portugal for 2020, announced last month, includes five star restaurants to choose from (M.B., Restaurante NUB, Kabuki, El Rincón de Juan Carlos and Kazan ).

Five-star hotels are also plentiful. Hard Rock opened its second European hotel in Tenerife in 2016 (the first was in Ibiza) and Royal Hideaway Corales Beach opened in 2018.

But while there are plenty of sophisticated adults-only hotels, such as the Meliá Hacienda del Conde Golf and Spa in Buenavista del Norte, the Las Madrigueras Hotel in Playa de las Americas, and the Iberostar Grand Hotel Salomé in Costa Adeje – The thing about Tenerife is that it caters so well to kids. Several first-class hotels offer unique Tenerife-focused activities that go beyond the usual kids clubs, including astronomical safari and dolphin encounters.

Facts about the Canary Islands – 17 interesting facts about the Canary Islands

Location of the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are a unique part of Spain. Geographically part of Africa and politically part of Europe, this small chain of islands is unlike anything else in Spain or the EU. Besides the fact that all the islands are different from the rest of Spain, they are also different from each other – sometimes with completely different landscapes and geography. Given that these islands are different from anything you might have imagined, let’s take a look at 17 interesting facts and facts about the Spanish Canary Islands that you probably didn’t know.

1. They were NOT named after canaries!

Despite the name, the islands were not named after canaries, cute chirping birds. The name comes from the Latin word for dog, canaria. ”One of the stories is that when some of the first Europeans arrived, they found large dogs on the island of Gran Canaria. In fact, these islands may not even be named after dogs, but after the seals that once inhabited the island, which the Romans called “sea wolves.”

2. They have the highest point in Spain.

Despite the fact that the Pyrenees are located in the north of the country, the highest point in Spain is on the island of Tenerife. El Teide is 3,718 m (12,198 ft) high. There are other high peaks in the Canary Islands, including the 2,400 m (7,874 ft) long Roque de los Muchachos on the island of La Palma. This mountain is notable for hosting one of the largest collections of astronomical telescopes in the world, including the largest telescope in the world, the 10.4-meter Gran Telescopio Canarias. The towering volcanic mountains rising above the clouds make it look like the viewing conditions you can find at Mona Kea in Hawaii.

3. The Spanish Civil War started here.

At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Francisco Franco was Commandant General of the Canary Islands, headquartered in Las Palmas, on the island of Gran Canaria. He and his henchmen worked out their strategy here in the Canaries, out of the sight and attention of the rest of Spain, before moving on to the continent.

4. You can cook food over the volcano.

As mentioned above, the Canary Islands are of volcanic origin. Although there are currently no volcanic eruptions on the island, between 1730 and 1736 there was a lot of activity on the island of Lanzarote, with over 100 volcanoes appearing on the landscape. The last eruption was in 1824, but there is still a significant amount of heat below the surface. If you enter the Timanfaya National Park, you can visit the El Diablo restaurant where they have several demonstrations showing the heat right below the surface. In one of the demonstrations, they throw straw into a hole – it immediately catches fire due to the high temperature. In another, they pour out the whole water, and it instantly turns into a tower of steam. In the restaurant for access to heat was dug 9-meter pit, the upper part of which is used as a grill. The grill temperature reaches 400 ° C and it does not consume energy.

5. The islands were colonized at the same time as America.

Although the Canary Islands were known to the ancient Romans and Greeks, they never really caught the attention of Europeans until they began to sail across the Atlantic Ocean to America. Columbus used the island of La Gomera as a starting point for his first voyage to America. Most of the old buildings you can find on the islands, especially in the city of La Laguna, have a very colonial style. However, unlike America, the Canary Islands were not a colony, but an actual part of Spain, which they remain to this day.

6. San Antonio, Texas, was founded by people from the Canary Islands

If you remember the Alamo, you should also think about the Canary Islands for a second. The city was originally founded by settlers from the Canary Islands, and their descendants died fighting with Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett. The founder of the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, also from the island of Tenerife. If you want to know even more about this unique fact, you won’t find a better book than The Canary Islands Migration to Louisiana , which details this fascinating chapter in the history of Texas and the Canary Islands.

7. This is the birthplace of the whistling language

On the island of La Gomera, there is a language used to communicate over long distances across the valleys called “Silbo Gomero.” As technology has changed the ease with which people could communicate, the language has been on the brink of extinction in the 20th century. The government has taken steps to teach children the language in school. The whistle is actually just a variation of the Spanish language and is mostly used for announcements and news, not for personal conversation. In 2009It was included in the list of “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO.

8. The world’s worst plane crash has occurred in the Canary Islands.

The world’s worst plane crash occurred on the island of Tenerife on March 27, 1977, when two Boeing 747s collided on a foggy airport runway. A staggering 583 people were killed when KLM Flight 4805 hit Pan Am Flight 1736 during takeoff. Neither plane was supposed to be in Tenerife, but they were diverted away from the Gran Canary Islands when a bomb exploded on the runway. The airport had many more aircraft than it could accommodate and could not accommodate all the aircraft at the gate. A post-event investigation by Spanish, Dutch and American teams concluded that a number of problems led to the crash, including language, not knowing where the planes were, random terminology, and pilot error. The accident led to many changes in how crews aircraft and control towers talk to each other to avoid misunderstandings.

9. The Canaries have two capitals.

The capitals of the province of the Canary Islands are located on the two largest islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Santa Cruz in Tenerife and Las Palmas in Gran Canaria are collectively considered the provincial capitals. The Parliament of the Canary Islands meets in Santa Cruz. The two capitals date back to when the islands were two different provinces of Spain and each city served as the capital. When the provinces were merged, they both continued to hold the title of capital.

Along the way, they brought with them many of their food customs. Peppers and chili began to be eaten by the African Berbers who migrated to the Canary Islands and infused food with their flavors. Another thing – for example, the use of sauces, which in the Canary Islands is called mojo sauce – later became the basis of the main sauces and salsa found in Texan cuisine. -Mexican cuisine.

12. The water in the El Golfo crater in Lanzarote is green.

El Golfo Crater is a volcanic crater on the coast of the island of Lanzarote. On land, just a few meters from the coast, there is a pool with green water. The greenery comes from algae that lives in the salty water of the pool. The water in the pool is still connected to the ocean through underground cracks that keep the water at sea level and ensure that the pool doesn’t evaporate.

Lanzarote is a volcanic island with almost no soil and no natural vegetation. It takes a lot of effort to grow vines. Unlike most vineyards where the vines are planted in rows, in Lanzarote each vine is placed in a small depression with a semi-circular wall of lava stone around it to protect it from the wind. Plants take root in lava rocks, where they get their water from the moisture that condenses on the rocks.

8 What personal protection measures should I take to prevent the spread of the virus?

The Government of the Canary Islands recommends that all citizens observe the following personal protection measures:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use a hydroalcoholic gel.
  • When you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, then put the tissue in the basket.
  • Stay at least 1.5 meters away from anyone who does not live with you (whether they have symptoms or not).
  • Wear a mask when you are outside or in a closed public place.

Any reunion or meeting in a secluded place of people who do not live together must be limited to a maximum of ten people, even if a safe distance can be guaranteed.

9What should I do if I develop symptoms while in the Canary Islands? Covid health insurance.

If you experience symptoms such as cough, fever, shortness of breath or general malaise, isolate yourself in your accommodation and call 900 112 061 for instructions and to contact the appropriate health center.

Remember that you must wear a mask if you go to any medical center on the islands and do not touch anything with your hands.

Since your health and well-being is the most important, if you do not have health insurance, we will provide you with an AXA policy in the Canary Islands free of charge to cover all costs related to COVID-19.
