Egypt in February: Travel Tips, Weather, and More
Weather
Most of northern Egypt, particularly in Cairo and the Nile-Delta region, experiences cooler temperatures in February, offering a welcome respite from the scorching heat that’s present throughout the rest of the year. It’s wintertime—the coldest month of the year besides January—and temperatures in the capital hover around 72°F during the day, dropping to around 50°F at night.
On the coasts, it’s typically warmer. Tourist destinations like Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh, for example, range from 57°F to 77°F. If you’re planning a February vacation, it’s advisable to bring warm clothes for the evenings. Rain is minimal throughout most of the country with the exception of the northern coast which receives moderate precipitation. Alexandria, for instance, typically sees about 4 rainy days in February.
Crowds and Costs
The downside of touring Egypt in February is that the fantastic weather tends to draw big crowds. In fact, it’s one of the busiest months of the year to visit. You’ll find high season crowds at the tourist sites, especially around the Pyramids of Giza and other famous ruins.
Additionally, you’ll pay high season rates. Hotels can sometimes double in price this time of year and it’s be rare to find special deals on lodging (which are usually at capacity). Be prepared to book ahead and budget for increased costs. Down farther south in places like Aswan and Luxor, or east along the beaches, it will be similar with busy restaurants, crowded buses, and packed resorts.
Where to Go
Cairo is particularly inviting this time of year. The cooler temperatures make the city feel less sticky yet the sunshine remains overhead, offering vibrant, sunny days with breathtaking sunsets. The fact that it’s so busy sets you up for excellent people-watching and there’s no shortage of things to do. The nightlife is lively in February as many of the restaurants and bars host special events. It’s a superb time to check out the many dance halls, jazz clubs, champagne bars, brewpubs, and cocktail lounges. The same holds true for Luxor and some of the destinations farther south along the Nile River such as Aswan and Abu Simbel.
The beaches are also bustling with activity in February. The resorts fill with people and you’ll find the pool bars fully stocked. It’s hotter on the coast and along the Sinai Peninsula, making it great sunbathing weather—and you’ll be treated to world-class dining options, too. Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab, and Hurghada all make outstanding choices for February vacations.
What to Do
First and foremost, you must check out the Pyramids of Giza. They will be crowded, yes, but exploring the mysterious historical structures, which date back to 2560 BC, is something you can’t miss. The magnificent archaeological complex includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaure, the Great Sphinx of Giza, and other famous ruins. The main part of Cairo also offers rich architecture with beautiful mosques (try the Sultan Hassan Mosque or the Al-Azhar Mosque) and premiere dining and nightlife.
Up north, check out the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa in the coastal city of Alexandria where you can wander through ruins that are considered among Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. Alexandria is also home to the Roman Amphitheater with old Roman baths and an ancient mosaic floor, along with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Citadel of Qaitbay.
If you visit the beaches around Sharm el-Sheikh or other parts of the Sinai Peninsula, the Red Sea offers breathtaking opportunities for snorkeling, scuba diving, sea kayaking, and other ocean-based activities. It’s also a great place to relax and get a massage or sip cocktails by the pool. Diving tours of the SS Thistlegorm Wreck—one of the world’s most famous shipwreck dive sites—can be arranged from both Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada.
Events in February
Abu Simbel Sun Festival (also called the Ascension of Ramses II): Twice a year, the sun aligns with Abu Simbel’s famous temple, hitting the sanctuary and casting light onto the statue of King Ramsses II. One of these solar alignments occurs in February (the other one is in October) during which a sacred ceremony takes place. It’s been held bi-annually for roughly 3,200 years and draws hundreds of people.

We base comfort level on dew point, as it determines whether sweat will evaporate from the skin, cooling the body. A lower dew point makes you feel more dry, while a higher dew point makes you feel more humid. Unlike temperature, which typically varies significantly between day and night, dew point tends to change more slowly, so while temperatures may drop at night, a wet day usually gives way to a wet night.
The probability that a given day will be wet at Lanzarote Airport basically does not change throughout February, staying at about 1% all the time.
The lowest probability of a wet day in February is 0% February 1, .
For reference: 31 Aug , at the wettest day of , dampness is felt 58% of of the time, and on February 1, , at the least wet day

This section describes the average hourly wind vector (speed and direction) over a large area at 10 meters above the ground. The wind experienced at any given location is highly dependent on local topography and other factors, and instantaneous wind speed and direction vary more widely than hourly averages.
The mean hourly wind speed at Lanzarote Airport basically does not change throughout February, all the time remaining approximately within plus or minus 0.3 kilometers per hour from 23.0 kilometers per hour .
For reference: July 17 , at the windiest day of , the average daily wind speed is 28.4 kilometers per hour , and October 14 , at the calmest day of , the average daily wind speed is

Definitions of growing season vary around the world, but in the context of this description, we define it as the longest continuous period of temperatures above freezing (≥ 0°C) in a year (the Northern Hemisphere calendar year, or July 1 to 30 June in the Southern Hemisphere).
Temperatures at Lanzarote Airport are warm enough all year round, so there is no point in discussing the growing season on these terms. However, we include the graph below as an illustration of the distribution of temperatures throughout the year.

This report describes typical weather for Lanzarote Airport based on a statistical analysis of historical hourly weather reports and model reconstructions from January 1, 1980 to December 31, 2016.
Temperature and dew point
Lanzarote Airport has a weather station that provided reasonably reliable reports during the analysis period, so we included it in our network. Where possible, archival temperature and dew point measurements are taken directly from this weather station. This information is derived from the NOAA Integrated Hourly Earth Observation System dataset based on ICAO METARs as required.
There are no other weather stations in our network within a radius of 200 kilometers from this place. Therefore, in case of missing or erroneous measurements from this station, we resort to NASA’s MERRA-2 Сmodern-era reanalysis, corrected according to the typical seasonal and diurnal differences of this station from the MERRA-2 scale reconstructed values.
Other data
All data related to the position of the Sun (such as sunrise and sunset) are calculated using astronomical formulas from Jean Mius’ Astronomical Algorithms, 2nd Ed. .
All other weather data, including cloudiness, precipitation, wind speed and direction, and solar energy flux, are taken from the MERRA-2 New Time Retrospective Analysis. This reanalysis combines various measurements over a wide area in a modern global meteorological model to reconstruct hourly weather history around the world on a 50 km grid.
Land use data are from the SHARE Global Land Cover Monitoring Network database published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
Altitude data is from the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM), published by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
The names, locations and time zones of places and some airports are from the GeoNames Geographical Database.

The information on this site is provided as is, without any guarantee of its accuracy or suitability for any purpose. The weather data may contain errors, glitches and other defects. We are not responsible for any decisions made on the basis of the information provided on this site.
We pay special attention to the fact that for a number of important data types we rely on reconstructions based on the MERRA-2 model. With huge advantages in temporal and spatial completeness, these reconstructions: (1) are based on computer models that may have typical model errors, (2) use coarse sampling on a 50 km grid and therefore cannot reconstruct local variations in many microclimates, and (3) experiencing particular weather difficulties in some coastal areas, especially on smaller islands.
We also caution that our travel points are only as accurate as the data on which they are based, that the weather conditions in any particular place and at any time are unpredictable and changeable, and that points calculation reflects a certain set of preferences that may not coincide with preferences of the individual reader.
