Looking to escape the cold and start 2021 with a delightful winter sun holiday in a warm destination? With fewer crowds, discounted accommodation rates, and blue-sky days perfect for exploring and watching the world go by from outdoor terraces, the coasts and islands along the Mediterranean Sea are your best bet.
Whether you’re into lush hiking trails, relaxing beach walks, or a rare taste of authentic local culture, we’ve found the best winter sun destinations in Europe to get your fix. From Cyprus to Spain, these balmy, palm-filled getaways are sure to melt away the winter blues and get you rolling into spring, without breaking the bank.
Sicily, Italy
Winter in Sicily means fewer crowds, bright blue skies, and almond trees in full bloom. It also means you’ll have the island’s stunning Baroque towns and extraordinary archaeological sites all to yourself and that you’ll be able to ski on Mount Etna, indulge in delicious cuisine, and enjoy beautiful Taormina at its most relaxed.
The coast enjoys a balmy Mediterranean climate and the sea urchins (ricci di mare) season is in full swing, allowing you to try this distinctive delicacy in numerous local restaurants.
Malta
Home to 9 UNESCO Heritage World Heritage Sites, Malta is an ideal destination for a winter sun escape with a cultural twist. During winter, it hardly rains and temperatures rarely drop below 15 °C, making it very pleasant to be outside all day long strolling the sunny streets of Valletta or exploring the untouched countryside. An alluring mix of natural harbors, pretty fishing villages, rocky coves, and towering cliffs, Malta’s lovely coastline is a delight to discover no matter the season.
On top of that, your days will be crowned by magical sunsets above the Mediterranean Sea, and, if you visit the island during the holidays, you’ll find the streets come alive with all sorts of colorful cribs and Christmas markets.
Madeira, Portugal
At 1,000 miles from mainland Portugal, Madeira is one of Europe’s most remote and exotic islands. And although there is always a risk of some rain in winter, its lush green landscapes, vibrant tropical gardens, and dramatic coast are reason enough to visit at any time of the year. The sun is shining about 6 hours a day, but at temperatures of 18 – 20°C, the weather is perfect for golf, walking, and sightseeing.
Funchal, the island’s picturesque capital, has a lot to offer its visitors, from beautiful colonial architecture to a thriving nightlife. Also, Madeira’s green, mountainous countryside is home to unique levadas, magnificent scenery, and well-marked hiking trails that make it easy to explore all year round.
Marbella, Spain
If your dream winter vacation involves soaking up the sun on empty beaches, strolling in tranquil surroundings, and lounging at open-air terraces in the shade of fragrant orange trees, then you won’t find a better destination than Marbella.
Blessed with an extraordinary microclimate, this storied Costa del Sol town is the ideal destination for a relaxing beachside escape enveloped in Andalusian charm, lush greenery, and endless outdoor activities. Winter is high golf season in Marbella, and spread around the coast are lots of world-class courses for every level and budget. Alternatively, hiking and walking opportunities abound in the area – whether along the palm-lined beach promenade, through the twisting flower-filled alleys of the Old Town, or in the nearby hills, where trekkers are rewarded with spectacular views across Africa.
With more than 5 hours of sunshine and an average temperature of almost 20ºC during the day, alfresco lunches are a favorite tradition during winter, and so are activities like horseback riding, exploring the delightful pueblos blancos that dot the nearby countryside, or hunting for sales at the dazzling shopping boutiques in Puerto Banús.
Cyprus
With balmy winter temperatures hovering around 20°C, Cyprus is an excellent choice for a sunny break filled with culture, history, and mouthwatering food.
Located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, this fascinating island country has everything from wonderful beaches and spectacular nature parks to fabulous archaeological sites. The country’s capital, Nicosia (Lefkosia in Greek) has some of the best museums and restaurants; Paphos abounds in beaches and archeological treasures; and Limassol is famous for its lively nightlife.
Canary Islands, Spain
Low travel costs and pleasantly warm year-round weather make Spain’s Canary Islands one of Europe’s best winter sun destinations. Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote – they’re all brimming with culture, beautiful beaches, and lots of things to do.
If you’re looking for a tranquil getaway, coupled with unspoiled landscapes and unique traditions, you might want to consider the archipelago’s lesser-known islands of El Hierro and La Gomera.
There’s no better time to take a trip than today, so why not take advantage of the low travel cost and exciting holiday packages on the market and go get your dose of Vitamin D while seeing some of Europe’s best-kept historical and cultural treasures awash in warm temperatures and glorious sunshine.

Find summer sun with these hot European destinations in January
05 January 21
Luxury holiday destinations,
Ibiza holidays,
luxury portugal holidays
January is the month to break up the long winter with a dose of winter sun and warmer weather. These destinations will treat you to an escape from the indoors.
By January, the novelty of spending colder days snuggled by the fire with the heating full blast, wrapped in blankets with your thickest socks on has worn off. The winter months have a tendency to overstay their welcome. What begins as a guilt-free excuse to stay indoors and do nothing becomes an exhausting yearning for some sun.
January is a great time of the year to seek some winter sun. After the rush of the festive season, it can leave you feeling rather deflated, like the only thing to look forward to is gradually lengthening days and warmer temperatures. Instead of increasing your burden by setting (unfailingly ambitious) New Year’s resolutions to exercise more and drink less, why not instead look to make January an enjoyable time?
Finding a hot destination for your luxury holidays in Europe during the winter can prove quite challenging. However, looking for a destination that is relatively hot in January compared to the UK’s winter is a far simpler task: there are some magical and warm European countries in January awaiting exploration. Think brighter and warmer days, more hours of sunlight, and an entirely new area in which to enjoy these small delights. The south of Europe in winter is a positively magnificent change of scenery from the now-dreary days of being cooped up inside hibernating in front of the Strictly Come Dancing archives.
These luxury holiday destinations will satiate your sun-seeking zeal. Explore Le Collectionist for other wonderfully warm destinations outside of Europe, such as Morocco and the Caribbean.
Ibiza
Ibiza is known for its summer scene of lazy days on bright beaches and bopping along to tropical beats in illustrious night and beach clubs. But it is also known for being immensely busy in the summer months, and, besides, Ibiza holidays are capable of being far more than such repetitive pursuits. In winter, the pace of life is much slower, but the weather remains more pleasant than on other parts of continental Europe.
January is a great time to explore more of the island: its cooler temperatures mean that its varying and lush interior is more accessible than it would be in the summer’s scourging heat. The beaches, every bit as beautiful in cooler weather, benefit from being peaceful and empty in January. Make the most of the free space: meander the old town’s labyrinthine and quaint streets; walk along serene beaches; hike the rugged terrain to amazing places like Cala d’Albarca.
Where to stay
Take the opportunity to immerse in the wild beauty on your luxury holidays to Spain by staying in Villa Blue. The villa flaunts a borderless horizon over the Mediterranean and Ibiza’s coastal mountains. The gardens are verdant and flourishing, bursting with pines and cypresses. On cooler days, the villa has an indoor jacuzzi and heated floors. But on warmer days, when the weather is at a comfortable 17°C, embark on a trip to discover more of this beautiful island.
Algarve
Algarve, in Portugal’s south, is a seemingly evergreen piece of paradise (largely thanks to its sprawling golf courses!) with a dramatic and rocky Atlantic Ocean coastline. Similar to Ibiza, the Algarve is a tourist hotspot during summer’s swelter. It is a popular destination for golf, sunny days on golden beaches, and its luxuriating lifestyle. While January is the coldest month, it is still tropical in comparison to Northern Europe: winter temperatures reach a mild 16°C. On top of that, there is typically only nine rainy days in January, so the chances of clear skies are high.
On luxury Portugal holidays to Alrgarve in the summer, you will likely witness heaving golf courses, buzzing restaurants, and beaches teeming with holidaymakers. January will see more space on golf courses, with green fees likely to be lower than the extortionate prices of the summer: enjoy a round without the constant pressures of congested tee times. On cooler days, if the sun has dipped behind cloud cover and a beach walk is off the cards, duck into a local restaurant and warm yourself on a caldierada de peixe (a Portuguese fish stew).
Where to stay
The relative quietude and cooler weather gives you the opportunity to saunter the streets of towns and cities without unpleasant crowds and high temperatures. Staying in Villa Santina in downtown Olhão will give you the opportunity to wander around its seasonal bazaars and visit Faro, which is a stone’s throw away. Beyond that, the villa is plush and zen: it has a meditation room, a massage room, a rooftop swimming pool, and a quiet leafy courtyard.
Sicily
What’s the weather in Sicily like right now, I hear you ask? An easy 18°C with clear skies, I say. While this is a pretty sizzling day for Sicily in January, it goes to show how good the weather can get on this amazing Mediterranean island, even in the winter! Sicily is known not only for its beautiful coastline, but also for its food, history, and culture, which makes it a fascinating place to visit all year round – the weather is just an added bonus. While you can still lap up the vitamin D dosage, it also offers opportunities aplenty for cultural and historical discovery when inclement weather demands it. It is one of our out-and-out favourite destinations for luxury Italy holidays.
Tour Taormina’s ancient Greek amphitheatre and wend your way through the lacing streets and lively piazzas of the town. You can even ski the slopes of Sicily’s formidable Mount Etna, with easy access from the cable cars. The evenings can be chilly, which is the perfect time to dine in a snug local restaurant on traditional pastas and delicious Italian wines. The architecture and culture of the island is oftentimes awe-inspiring.
Where to stay
Villa Aranciata is a place of tranquil solitude situated amongst organic orange groves. This villa has a certain bucolic charm: outdoor activities reign supreme and the surrounding gardens and fields blossom in a palette of greens, the source of birdsong that whistles on the breeze from rustling leaves. Spend the afternoon playing tennis in the warming winter sun, or play a round of golf at the nearby club. It is incredibly easy to embark on a number of excellent day trips, with Taormina, Mount Etna and countless other attractions within driving distance. This villa is the perfect home for your luxury Sicily holidays in January.
Mykonos
Once the summer crowds have dissipated and the island returns to its languid ways, it becomes ever more apparent how amiable, forthcoming and wholesome the Greek people are. The pretences of touristy gimmicks are no longer necessary, and what you are left with is an air of welcome that gives you a deeper insight into life on this beautiful island. If you don’t really care about all that cultural immersion stuffs, it’s also one of the hottest areas in Europe during the winter.
While luxury holidays to Mykonos in the summer are characterised largely by an atmosphere of young-at-heart festivities and parties, there are still numerous attractions for visitors to indulge in. Visit the 16th-century windmills, which are a picture perfect site to visit at sunset. Or meander the divine Matoyianni Street – a quintessentially Greek-postcard street with immaculate white walls set against sharp blues. Luxury Greece holidays are also about sampling the various and delicious cuisine.
Where to stay
Situated just outside of town, everything you need is within walking distance from Villa Sydonie: explore the restaurants and the bars to delve into some of the finest Mediterranean and Greek food and drink; peruse the seafront markets for the freshest catch of the day; or simply stay put in the villa, where you can while away sunny days on the spacious patio.
Explore Le Collectionist’s range of beautiful destinations to find your perfect place to lap up the European winter sun.

While you will need to bundle up, it’s worth the effort as you’ll be able to take in some of the world’s most extraordinary landscapes, made even more beautiful this time of year with everything from endless ice fields, glistening blue glaciers and brilliantly blue ice caves to partially frozen waterfalls. Add in the fact that you’ll have the chance to watch the northern lights, and Iceland is hard to beat. Just a short drive from the capital city and you can be in the legendary Blue Lagoon, enjoying the soothing warm waters while sipping a refreshing beverage and gazing at the magnificent surrounding scenery.

The Svalbard archipelago is set between the Greenland and Barents seas, 1,000 miles from the North Pole, and about three hours by plane from Oslo. It’s not only another fantastic destination for those that want to see the northern lights, but it offers everything from close-up encounters with icebergs and glaciers to an incredible abundance of wildlife. It’s so remote that it hosts the Global Seed Vault, which provides a safety net against the accidental loss of diversity in case of a major regional or global disaster. In addition to aurora and wildlife viewing, you can enjoy dog sledding, skiing, and snowmobiling.

Albania
By Mal of Raw Mal Roams
If you’re looking for winter sun destinations in Europe, you should consider the sea town of Sarande situated on the Albanian Riviera.
Albania is still a hugely underrated holiday destination, extremely budget-friendly with gorgeous beaches, excellent cuisine and rich history.
The temperature during winter hardly ever goes below 15 degrees Celsius during the day with plenty of sunshine which makes Sarande the perfect destination for the winter sun.
Sarande is famous for its excellent seafood restaurants. Try the mouth-watering fresh mussels served in almost all restaurants in town accompanied by homemade Albanian wine.
While beach days are out of the question during winter, Serande and its nearby areas have plenty of interesting places to keep you entertained during your stay.
Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the ancient Greek city of Butrint, situated an hour’s drive from Sarande. Hire a car and visit the local monasteries, including the most famous Monastery of Saint George which features a church dating back to the 14th century and stunning views over the Ionian Sea.
And if you’re bored of Albania, take a day trip to the Greek island of Corfu, which is located a 30 minutes ferry ride from Sarande.
Algarve
By Linn Haglund of Brainy Backpackers
Algarve is one of the best places to get some vitamin D and escape the cold during the winter months.
There are so many great things to do in Algarve during the off-season and due to a lower number of tourists, you get the most stunning beaches in Portugal without the crowds.
But don’t expect to be all by yourself. Surf is up all year round in Algarve and the most popular beaches, especially on the west coast are busy.
Winter is also the best time of the year to go hiking along the sun-kissed, rugged cliffs lining the mesmerizing coast of Portugal as it’s not too hot.
There are also charming towns you have to visit, especially make sure you don’t miss out on Lagos, Albufeira, and Tavira. You can also go on a boat trip to see all the sea caves that the dramatic cliffs hide.
The most popular is Benagil Cave, hiding a beautiful beach lit up by an enormous sinkhole in the ceiling. It’s not allowed to get off the boat, so if you want to explore the beach itself, you have to rent a kayak or paddleboard at Benagil Beach.
Athens
By Erica of Trip Scholars
One of the most rewarding European destinations you can visit anytime is Athens, and winter is the perfect time for your trip!
The city is still brimming with archaeological wonders, world-class museums, and a fun social scene. But the crowds are significantly smaller than the massive summer surge. Additionally, hotel and airfare rates drop with the temperatures.
Summer heat in Athens can be stifling and many of the archaeological sites are very exposed with few trees and little shade. Summers have average highs of 32 degrees. Some days are much hotter, and it can make exploring the capital extremely uncomfortable.
Winter temperatures, on the other hand, are considerably more inviting! Between December and March, temperatures range from an average low of 6 to a high of 16 degrees.
With the lower temperatures and manageable crowds, you can comfortably get to all the iconic sites in the city. Visit the Acropolis, Agora, Roman Agora, and Plaka as well as the Museum of the Acropolis and the National Archaeological Museum.
Here are a couple of tips to enhance your winter trip to Athens. To appreciate all of the sites you will see, learn more about Greece before you go. Also consider getting the Combo Pass, which will allow you to skip the lines and save you money if you are visiting multiple sites.
Benidorm
By PlacesofJuma
Benidorm in Spain is a coastal city and a popular destination as a warm destination to catch some winter sun. Its nickname is “Little Manhattan” because this city has the highest density of skyscrapers (in relation to the number of inhabitants) in the world!
Benidorm is also known for its endless sandy beaches, and the beautiful natural bays of the region, which are perfect for swimming even in winter.
Really great is the vibrant nightlife in Benidorm, and even in winter, there is always something going on here. There are really cool clubs and discos, countless pubs, restaurants, and cafes that invite you to go out in the evening.
But also older people, couples and families with children get their money’s worth during a vacation in Benidorm, because the range of leisure activities is ingenious. There are numerous cool amusement parks, water parks and zoos, but also nature and ingenious excursion destinations.
For example, right next to the city is the Sierra Helada National Park, where you can go on wonderful cliff hikes. Also worth seeing is the white town of Alte, as well as the colourful town of Villajoyosa, just a few minutes drive away!
Cagliari
By Claudia Tavani of Strictly Sardinia
Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, is a lovely place to visit throughout the year and a fantastic destination in the winter.
When northern Europe – and even northern Italy – shivers and is covered in a blanket of snow, Cagliari enjoys many sunny days with average day-time temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees Celsius which make it pleasant to go for a walk and even to sit outside to sip a coffee.
The city is packed with interesting places to visit. Start your exploration in the historic centre of town, visiting the old historic quarters of Castello, where you’ll be able to spot the Santa Maria Cathedral with its adjoint bell tower, the two protective towers of San Pancrazio and Dell’Elefante.
Located in Castello there’s the well-curated archaeology museum, where you can get a better understanding of the history of Sardinia. Make sure to get to Via Santa Croce terrace in time for a beautiful sunset!
Not far from Castello, the Roman Amphitheater and the Botanical Gardens are other must-sees.
From there, you can reach Stampace, where you will find more churches and archaeological sites. Cross into La Marina district to find some of the best wine bars and restaurants in Cagliari. Finally, Villanova is one of the most charming neighbourhoods in town.
To enjoy nature within the city, head to Poetto beach. You can walk along the shore or decide to access Molentargius Nature Reserve for a chance of spotting pink flamingos.
Finally, if you fancy a hike just head to Calamosca beach and find the trail to hike to Sella del Diavolo, for incredible views of Poetto beach and Molentargius from above; or the one to Fortino di Sant’Ignazio, an abandoned 17th-century fort from where you can admire the Gulf of Cagliari.
Dubrovnik
By Christine Rogador
Winter is arguably the best season to visit Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular Balkan destinations. Thanks to the popularity of Game of Thrones, this Croatian city has become more popular than ever.
That being said, visiting during winter means fewer tourists, lower hotel prices, and milder weather.
Winter sightseeing in Dubrovnik is also much easier. Apart from being less crowded, the winters in this part of Croatia are typically mild due to its southern location.
Winter in Dubrovnik provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to walk along the city’s 1,9 km old walls. Without the heat or the crowds, you can enjoy unobstructed views of the walls, forts, gates, and the Adriatic and learn the history of this medieval city.
Another place to visit in the winter is the limestone-paved Stradun, Europe’s most beautiful pedestrian main street. If you go during the holidays, you’ll be in for a treat as the street comes alive with lights, sounds, flavours, and treats from the Advent Market.
If you’re visiting with a partner for a honeymoon or romantic holiday, take the cable car for a different perspective on the old town. Here, you’ll enjoy the views of the old city, the mountains and the Adriatic coast which is one of the most romantic things to do in Dubrovnik.
Beaches in Europe during winter might sound strange but you can still enjoy a beach holiday in Croatia – albeit at a lower water temperature. Among the best beaches to visit in Dubrovnik are Uvala Lapad and Bellevue Beach.
If you want to save more money while travelling in Dubrovnik, find accommodation outside of the Old City instead. Aside from being quieter, the views are also more spectacular with most hotels and apartments overlooking the Adriatic, the cliffs and the nearby islets.
Malaga
By Cristina of My Little World of Travelling
Malaga is often seen as a summer destination because of its incredible beaches, festivals and water activities. However, visiting Malaga in winter is a great option too, especially if you prefer to have a more relaxing experience.
Winter in Malaga is very mild in comparison to other European destinations, you’ll enjoy temperatures of a maximum of 18 degrees and a minimum of 10 degrees.
Malaga is one of the best places for winter sun in Europe as it’s one of the sunniest cities in Spain!
In addition to this, there are plenty of things you can do in Malaga during this time of the year – from sightseeing and immersing yourself in the Spanish Christmas to going on a hiking trail.

Malta
By Anne of Packing Light Travel
If you’re looking for a warm winter destination in Europe, Malta is an excellent choice. With December temperatures averaging highs of 17 and lows of 11 degrees, one or two lightweight layers will see you comfortably dressed for exploring the best Malta has to offer.
This includes enjoying delicious seafood at a seaside restaurant, basking in the opulence of Saint John’s Co-cathedral, crossing the magnificent Valletta Harbour in a dgħajsa (a traditional water taxi), taking a boat trip out to the famous Blue Lagoon, and admiring the rich architecture gracing the streets of Valletta or Mdina.
Besides agreeable weather, another advantage is that the euro goes much further in Malta than it does in many other countries in the Eurozone. And, for English-speaking travellers, it’s easy to get around and interact with residents as English is widely spoken; it’s one of the country’s official languages.
If driving on the left is a concern, the good news is that the public bus service is affordable and reliable enough to explore the islands of Malta and Gozo.
Marseille
By Nadine of Le Long Weekend
The South of France is a popular destination in the warmer months, but many don’t realise that winter can be a fantastic time to visit too.
Known as France’s “second city”, Marseille is a particularly vibrant and engaging place to visit in winter, as it offers a myriad of things to do and is typically blessed with a mild climate.
Daytime temperatures linger in the low-mid teens, so on a sunny afternoon, it’s not uncommon to see the locals enjoying the many beaches and baring their skin to the sun’s rays.
It’s the ideal time to take a walk along the city’s famous waterfront promenade, go hiking in the formidable Calanques and get acquainted with some of Marseille’s top attractions.
Learn about the history of this multicultural city at the ultra-modern MuCEM, shop at the bustling markets, take a wander through the colourful Le Panier district and climb the stairs to Notre-Dame de la Garde for the best views in town.
Nice
By Stephanie of The Unknown Enthusiast
If you want to experience French charm in the middle of winter, Nice is the perfect city to head to. Situated on the coast, Nice is a charming yet upscale blend of laid-back Mediterranean culture and classic French architecture and style.
Winter sees many fewer visitors than any other season, but still experiences mild temperatures, especially compared to other popular French destinations like Paris.
While it is too cold to go swimming, you can still enjoy many of the beautiful features Nice has to offer. Walk down the Promenade des Anglais – the wide walking path that spans the coast for several miles. The sea views are stunning and the people-watching is top-notch.
Walk through the Jardin Albert I and enjoy the sculptures, green spaces, water features, and playgrounds that are featured in this space that is popular with locals and tourists alike.
Visit Castle Hill for the stunning views of Nice down the Promenade and into the old town.
While in Nice, definitely get some socca (essentially a chickpea pancake) or pissaladiere (pizza-like bread with olives and onions) – specialities of Nice that you absolutely must try!
Nicosia
By Yaren
Cyprus is known for its good weather and in winter, the average temperature is 16-17 degrees.
Most tourists go to Cyprus during the summer months but visiting Cyprus during winter is not a bad idea at all! There are way fewer tourists and it is possible to go to the beach even in the winter months for some people.
If you are planning to visit Cyprus during winter, Nicosia is a good place to stay!
Nicosia is home to many great cafes and bars, historic buildings and great street art. When in Nicosia, you can cross the border from the north to the south of the city to have a unique experience of crossing the border in Europe’s last divided capital.
There is a crossing point located near the Walled City, also known as the old town. You should definitely visit Buyuk Han (The Great Inn), the largest inn on the island, NIMAC, the contemporary art centre, Ledras Street and Selimiye Mosque.
Paros
By Paulina of Paulina on the Road
If you are looking for warm beautiful destinations in Europe in Winter, Paros is the perfect solitude getaway. It is situated around the beautiful waters of the Aegean Sea, in the centre of Cyclades islands.
It is a less travel destination where you can find deserted beaches and warm environments for a perfect winter vacation.
It is recognized as one of the best-kept secrets of Greece. After spending some time there, you’ll know why.
Travellers should visit this island in winter as it is the hub of activities and becomes welcoming especially during winter. Winter reveals another side of Paros with bright lights and shops awaiting your visit.
The winter festivals including Epiphany, Carnival, and Clean Monday make the winter in Paros more happening for the travellers.
The special thing about visiting Paros is the cobblestone streets that offer photo opportunities at every turn. You can visit Panagia Ekatontapiliani, sunbathe at the beautiful beaches, take a ferry ride to the nearest islands, take a boat tour, and have wine at Moraitis.
Tip – Due to the winter season, you may not find where to stay in Paros. But there are a lot of Airbnbs that offer wonderful stays.
Puglia
By Cristina of LooknWalk
Puglia (Engl: Apulia), the land of sea, mountains, and hills attracts visitors due to its extensive Adriatic Coast, picturesque villages, ancient flavours, and outstanding weather.
On average, during winter, the temperatures rarely drop below 10ºC (during the day) throughout the area, but local exceptions exist (due to microclimate). It’s also very much possible to enjoy temperatures close to 20ºC in December, ideal for long walks by the deserted sea, hiking in the mountains, or even a boat ride.
Visiting the charming villages and towns, as well as trying the local foods is exactly what you should focus on during winter in Puglia. Make sure to rent a car for more flexibility.
From the trulli of Alberobello to the “White City” (Ostuni), and the Pearl of the Adriatic (Vieste), there are plenty of places to explore. If you fancy spending a long time here (and maybe, working remotely from Italy), it’s best to choose cities like Bari (the capital of the region) or Lecce (the Baroque jewel). Both are great bases to explore the area.
Rhodes
By Alice of Adventures of Alice
During the winter, Rhodes is fairly warmer than Greece’s mainland. With high temperatures ranging from about 14°C-16°C and low temperatures from 9°C-11°C. This is certainly not the warmest winter destination; however, it provides the perfect conditions for taking part in outdoor activities such as hiking, plus you won’t get too hot at night.
There are so many things to do in Rhodes. The place is filled with rich history and amazing architecture. One of the best things to do is visit the Acropolis of Lindos. These ruins are from the 4th century BC.
It gives beautiful views across the valley and of St Paul’s bay below. To reach it you have to climb a steep hill as the ruins are placed on a 116m rock, this is where you’ll be glad it’s only 16°C.
Some other things to do include visiting Rhodes old town, the Palace of the Grand Master, the valley of the butterflies, Agios Pavlos beach and St Pauls Bay
Santorini
By Dymphe of Dymabroad
Santorini is one of the best warm European destinations to visit in winter. Santorini is an island in Greece that is very beautiful, and the weather is very comfortable in winter compared to many other places in Europe.
When you go here, you can visit picturesque villages, such as Oia, where you can find the iconic blue domes. Furthermore, what’s great during winter is that it is less hot outside, so some activities are more doable.
Hiking is great in Santorini and doing it is much better in winter. Another thing that makes visiting Santorini in winter better is that there are fewer people. This will give you a much more local experience of the island.
Also, exploring the villages is a great reason to visit Santorini, and it’s more fun to explore some villages without the crowds. Furthermore, accommodation on the island is much more affordable during this time.
Keep in mind that the bus schedule is different in winter and buses run less often. That’s why renting a car is more convenient during winter.
Sicily
By Samantha of The Wandering Wanderluster
When you think of Italy in the winter, your mind may jump to images of the snow-capped Alpine Mountains and people skiing, but head further south to the island of Sicily and you’ll find more moderate temperatures, making the island a great destination for a European winter escape.
While the summer months see flocks of tourists heading to the island, visiting Sicily in the winter has some benefits including fewer crowds and cheaper airfare and hotel prices.
While you’d have to be a brave soul to swim in the sea during the winter, there are endless places to visit in Sicily that will easily fill your days. Choose from a plethora of ancient archaeological sites, fascinating museums, stunning churches and beautiful baroque cities.
For a touch of nature, head to Mount Etna for a spot of hiking (with snow!), a trip up the volcano by cable car or simply a casual stroll around some of its historic craters and enjoy the view out over the Ionian Sea. And, of course, a trip to Sicily wouldn’t be complete without indulging in copious amounts of delicious food and Sicilian wine.
While many of the vineyards will be closed, you can still part-take in cooking classes throughout the region during the winter months which are often accompanied by some kind of wine tasting experience where you have the opportunity to try some of Sicily’s delectable nectars.
Tbilisi
By Anna of No Space In My Passport
If you are looking for a warm European getaway during winter, then look no further than Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Although summer is the most popular time to visit Tbilisi, the city will not disappoint you in winter.
There are a lot of things to do in Tbilisi, including visiting the Old Town, taking the funicular to see magnificent views of the city, eating some local Georgian food and drinking wine. There is nothing better than a warm Adjarian khachapuri on a cold winter’s day.
If you are a ski lover, within only a few hours’ time, you can find yourself at a ski resort. The most popular one is called Gudauri and offers some good skiing opportunities.
There are some things to know before you visit Tbilisi. In the city, there is no uber. Instead, you can use Yandex Taxi or hail a cab in the street. Georgian is also famous for its traditions, such as the supra (long table with a lot of food), so be prepared to eat and drink a lot.

Iceland

Iceland is a stunning country, and a winter Europe trip means the chance to see the Northern Lights. While it is important to check road conditions to your intended destinations, a Europe winter vacation in Iceland is low season, so accommodations will likely be easier than during the peak season. However, the hours of sunlight will be limited each day.
Icelandic airlines like Wow Air and Icelandair generally offer a free layover in Iceland of up to a week, which is a great way to expand on another trip. Our family of five rented a car and spent 10 days touring the Ring Road of Iceland, constantly stunned that each view was actually more beautiful than the last.
Iceland offers plenty of waterfalls, geothermal pools, beautiful icecap mountains, black sand beaches, volcanos and whale watching opportunities, along with a glacier lake, an active geyser, and bubbling mud pools. Yes, outdoor swimming is popular year around, and make sure not to miss Iceland’s most popular tourist location, the Blue Lagoon. While south Iceland is the most popular tourist destination and where winter travelers may prefer to stay, a winter season in Europe may encourage a return trip during the summer to check out any parts missed.

Finland

One of the best European countries to visit in winter is Finland. What’s not to love about the home of Santa Claus? You are almost always guaranteed snow, the food is delicious and the people are ultra friendly. Then add Lapland, Reindeer, Saunas and endless forests and you have winter scenes that you only thought existed on Christmas cards.
Finland has a wide choice of winter activities. Why not try nordic skiing or if you are brave enough try walking across a frozen river? As the word Sauna is a Finnish word you have to try this quintessential Finnish experience.
Helsinki is your gateway to the country with flights arriving from all over the globe. It’s one of the cool European cities to visit in winter for a few days before heading out to the beautiful Finnish countryside. If culture is your thing then Turku is your city. If you love islands then head out to the Aland Islands.
Last but not least there is Rovaniemi, the city that leads you to Santa Claus. Meeting Santa Claus in Lapland, surely there can be no better things to do in Europe in winter?

Sweden

Sweden is one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter with the kids as it is well set up for the colder weather. It has the perfect mix of indoor and outdoor activities and the Swedish tradition of Fika (basically coffee breaks) mean that you have plenty of opportunities to take a break from the cold.
One of our favourite family friendly activities was visiting Skansen outdoor living history museum which replicates Swedish life of bygone days. It is great to experience what life was like and the buildings are all open so there are plenty of chances too take a rest from the cold.
Our little one particularly loved walking around the Nordic Zoo which is on site, and it was lovely to see the animals in their traditional habitat.
On top of this, Swedish food is perfect in cold weather and is very child friendly. Who doesn’t love meatballs and mash! Warning – you’ll never be able to eat at Ikea again after eating the real deal.
Stockholm is one of the perfect Christmas breaks Europe offers, with quaint Christmas markets scattered across the city.

Norway
Thanks to Josie from Josie Wanders
Norway in winter has a special feel to it and a must for your Europe winter itinerary. You will likely fly into Oslo so start your visit with the Viking Ship Museum and Folkemuseum to get a sense of the history. After that the kids can blow off some steam doing winter activities at the Oslo Winter Park. Escape the cold with a visit to the indoor Oslo Reptile Park and watch the snakes and other animals being fed.
Continue your trip by doing one of the most scenic train trips in the world across to Bergen. The Bryggen area of Bergen with it’s colourful timber buildings is a must, as is taking the Fløibanen Funicular to enjoy the view over the city. There is a great playground for the kids to enjoy, and a cafe to warm up in with a hot chocolate afterwards.
One of the best places in Europe to visit in winter is to see the Northern Lights, and Tromsø is located perfectly within the viewing band. Combine viewing the lights with some husky sledding or visiting a reindeer farm for a perfect family day in the snow. For a real splurge, stay at an ice hotel or book an igloo room and really create a Northern Lights experience your kids will never forget.

Denmark

It might be cold outside but Denmark can be one of the best winter holiday destinations in Europe to take your family.
Denmark is one of the best places to visit in December in Europe, just prior to Christmas, so you can revel in the Christmas markets, Christmas food and so many magical traditions.
The best place to start your holiday is the Danish capital Copenhagen. Copenhagen is one of the best winter city breaks Europe has to offer with a large number of things to do in winter. Your first stop should be the world famous Tivoli Gardens, where you can enjoy a fun filled day of rides, concerts and entertainment for all ages. Next it’s on to see the crown jewels at Rosenborg castle and to witness the daily changing of the guards ceremony at Amalienborg Palace where the royal family live. Lunch at the colourful Nyhavn is a must, as is a canal tour and a trip to the LEGO store.
Take some time to head out of the city and explore the nearby castles of Kronborg and Frederiksborg, the Viking Museum, Aaros in Aarhus and Hans Christian Andersen in Odense. There are also plenty of places throughout Denmark where you can enjoy ice-skating or even the seriously invigorating ice swimming (if you’re game)!
Sadly some big attractions such as Legoland and the GeoCenter Møns Klint are closed over winter.
Our top tip for visiting Denmark in winter is to wear plenty of layers, as it’s freezing outside but toasty warm inside. You will also find there is often more rain than there is snow in Denmark, so make sure you take your windproof raincoat with you and have some fun.

Scotland
Thanks to Jessica from Independent Travel Cats
Scotland is one of the great winter destinations Europe offers. During the winter months, you’ll find fewer people, lower prices, holiday celebrations, and scenic wintery landscapes. The downside of course is the unpredictable weather, but just come prepared with warm clothing and rain gear!
If visiting Europe in December, I’d recommend that visitors spend some time in Edinburgh as it is one of the best European cities to visit in December for it’s holiday celebrations. There are loads of things to do in Edinburgh for Christmas including a large Christmas market, theater performances, festive afternoon teas, tree lighting ceremonies, ice skating, carnival rides, Santa Claus grottos, and much more. There are loads of things to do for families around this time of year, making it one of the top winter destinations in Europe.
Edinburgh is also one of the best places to visit in January in Europe as you can also celebrate Hogmanay (New Year’s Day) in the city which is one of the city’s largest festivals. However, just note that this is one of the busiest (and most expensive in terms of lodging) weeks of the year to be in Edinburgh.

London
Thanks to David from Delve into Europe
The winter nights in London are very long, with darkness descending before 4 pm and not lifting until around 8 am – but Christmas in London is such a magical place to visit at this time of the year that you hardly notice.
One of the advantages of the long nights is that you get to show your kids the city sparkling and lit up – you’d have to wait until after 10pm for that in summer. The time around dusk – between 4 and 5.30pm in winter – is magical and it’s great for them to see it.
The beauty of London in winter is that the weather won’t deter you much because there’s so much to do indoors. London has some of the best museums in the world – the Science Museum in South Kensington has some brilliant interactive displays, and its neighbour the Natural History Museum tells the story of the natural world from the dinosaurs to the present day. If you have a budding artist, the National Gallery and Tate Modern are great places to take them for inspiration.
London also has some of the best entertainment in the world in the West End with its many theatres and cinemas. If you love theatre, then London is one of the best places in Europe to visit in winter as it’s pantomime season, a great time to take the kids for some traditional fun and slapstick.
The city has an abundance of year-round attractions for kids as well, and the likes of Battersea Park Children’s Zoo are great places to visit at any time of year.

There is a great Christmas Market in York too if your travelling around England.
Paris
Thanks to Lena from Salut from Paris
Paris is a bucket list destination for many travellers and shouldn’t be missing on any Europe itinerary. Even though winter is maybe not the time of the year where you can have classic picnics along the Seine, it’s nevertheless a great season to explore the city.
The Champs Élysées is illuminated in festive lights, ice skating rinks are opening all over town and the many Christmas markets inviting you to purchase some Christmas gifts. One of the most beautiful places in Europe in winter!
A must do activity for every Parisian kid is to pay a visit to the big department stores. While the facades of the Gallery Lafayette and Printemps are nicely decorated, the real highlight are the window displays. Each shop window showcases a different Christmas scene with animated figures, trains, wrapped gifts and everything that else that spreads Christmas cheer.
Winter is also a superb time to visit Disneyland Paris. The Christmas and Halloween periods are the biggest events in the Park and worth a visit for everyone who wants to get enchanted by a Disney winter wonderland or a spooky horror show.
If the weather is not on your side, Paris also has a lot of indoor activities for families: the Aquarium of Paris at Trodacero, the Galerie d’Evolution or the Science Museum at Parc de la Villette to name a few. Even the Louvre is great for all ages – rent one of their interactive Nintendo DS guides that easily keep even the most fidgety kids engaged.

Chamonix
Thanks to Mags from The Family Freestylers
Head to France for one of the unforgettable winter holidays Europe has to offer. Drink in the stunning mountain scenery in the snowy French Alps by strapping on your skis and taking to the slopes. Visit the highest point in Europe by taking the Aiguille du Midi cable car in Chamonix to the heady heights of 3,842m above sea level. Kids will love standing in the glass box at the very top! Chamonix offers family skiing in Les Houches, high mountain railway rides and the chance to walk into a glacier in Chamonix’s ice caves. One of the best places to visit in Europe during winter for a skiiing holiday.
Easy Jet flies into Geneva, then take a 1 hour transfer to Chamonix with Chamonix Valley Transfers (CVT) or Mountain Dropoffs.
Stay at the Rocky Pop hotel in Les Houches or for a magical stay to truly experience the magnificence of the Alps we suggest a night’s stay at the high altitude mountain refuge hotel Terminal Neige, located right on the glacier’s edge.

Baltic Sea Coast
Thanks to Clemens from Travellers Archive
Germany in winter can be true bliss. Imagine snow-covered little alleys, steaming chimneys and the sweet smell of mulled wine, coming from one of the many Christmas markets that open up in almost every single German city during December. Definitely a must for places to visit in Europe in December.
One of our favourite destinations in Germany in winter is the Baltic Sea coast and especially the Island of Usedom. Germany’s second largest island in the Baltic Sea offers romantic villages and cities that seem to be stuck in time. Most of them are very traditional, with fishermen taking their boats out in the morning before they cure their goods and little markets that will warm your heart.
Especially for kids, the Baltic Sea coast in Germany is a true paradise. Put the whole family in warm clothes and head to the beach. Walking through the sand in summer is obvious, but doing it in winter, when the sea is even darker and has an even more intimidating feel, is something special. Listen to the seagulls and cure the cold and red faces with some warm tea afterwards.
Too cold for you? Don’t worry, there are plenty of museums and things to do on the Baltic Sea coast in Germany, such as swimming pools or cinemas.

Berlin

Berlin, Germany is one of the best places to go in Europe in winter with family, friends and kids.
The Charlie Checkpoint is the best place to visit within the city. We find US soldiers still protecting the territory. It is still known to be the Berlin Wall crossing point between East and West Berlin. The Parliament and other city attractions include souvenir shopping, travelling and having fun with kids in the mall and other ongoing winter celebrations happening in this part of the country.
The Berlin wall and its popularity make tourists plan a visit to enjoy the beauty and diversities that exist in the place. The Reichstag building is also on the travel wish list of many travellers coming from across the world.

The German Christmas Markets
Thanks to Kaylie from Happiness Travel Here
For the past 4 years, we have been visiting the Christmas Markets in Germany each December. I can undoubtedly say that they are my all-time favourite winter activity and having visited with children between 1 and 6 years old they are also perfect for families.
My favourite market with kids is the Striezelmarkt in Dresden. The Dresden Christmas Market is the oldest in Germany. Looking more like a village than a temporary market, the wooden stands are all beautifully decorated. There is a central Christmas tree brought in from Norway and a giant version of the revolving Christmas pyramid, a traditional decoration for this region. Be sure to look up at the top of each stand, you’ll see the decorations come to life with moving figures playing out Christmas escapades.
Hot spiced Gluhwein is the drink of choice for adults. Kids can enjoy a hot Kinderpunsch or feast on Currywurst (sausage in a sweet, mild curry sauce), Quarkbällchen (like a doughnut hole), Lebkuchen (decorative heart-shaped cookies) and Stollen (German Christmas cake).
There are ferris wheels, mini trains and merry-go-rounds and many activities for kids. Inside the larger cabins, you’ll find a children’s cinema, puppet theatre, candle making, art and crafts and our favourite the Christmas bakery where children can shape and decorate their own cookies.
You will find Christmas markets all over Germany, they run from late November and often close by Christmas Eve. Popular with locals and tourists alike, book your accommodation in advance and aim to visit during the week. Be sure to visit more than one market since they each have their own theme and atmosphere. Dresden, for example, has 5 markets within walking distance of each other.

Munich and Bavaria
Thanks to Mark from Wyld Family Travel
Munich and Bavaria are one of the great winter holiday destinations Europe offers over the Christmas period.
If travelling to Europe in December, Munich is great as it is renowned for its amazing Christmas markets where you will find everything from handcrafts to gourmet foods. The Gluewien or the hot wine is a tradition of the winter markets.
In Munich, we found the hop on hop off bus was great in winter to keep us all warm and see the sights. We got off at Nymphenburg Palace and visited the Marstall Museum. This museum is full of Royal Carriages and coaches from the Bavarian Royal family. The Munich Residence has an amazing armoury and crown jewels on display. Munich is alive in winter and covered with snow which is always a highlight for the kids.
Each Bavarian town you visit will have a different Gluewein to sample. The fairy tale castles in Bavaria in winter are postcard perfect. The kids will love visiting Neuschwanstein in the snow, it’s just like the Disneyland castle.

Czech Republic
Thanks to Christine from Tapped out Travellers
There is so much to see and do in Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic, that five days isn’t nearly enough time to explore them all with the kids.
Prague castle isn’t your typical castle; it is an entire complex. There are several buildings and alley ways to explore, including the Cathedral, and each open at various times. Be sure to purchase the proper ticket, as there are various options available for different types of travellers and their budgets/abilities, we wouldn’t want you to buy the wrong one. We did and discovered we weren’t able to climb the cathedral tower.
Crossing Charles Bridge is also an event, as each statue and every angle has something new to offer.
Old Town Square holds the Astronomical clock, as well as many Christmas Market stalls. While this isn’t the only market in town, it is one of the biggest and most centrally located. The Christmas Market also runs until Jan 6 most years, so don’t worry if you can’t make it before the New Year.
There is also the Apple Museum, the Lego Museum and Grevin Wax Museum that kids love to explore; no, not apples the fruit, Apple the company. There is an entire museum dedicated to Apple Computers and Steve Jobs. The guided tour is an app you download to your iPhone and read as you pass from station to station. It really was neat to explore and the kids loved the Pixar section.
There are so many day trip options available from Prague that I would suggest everyone drive to Prague. However, flying in and taking a guided tour is also a great idea, just be mindful that most tours don’t allow kids under 5 years old to join. Public transit is extensive in Prague and everything is so close together. There is so much to see on the way to each major attraction that walking really is the best use of your time…and it’s free.
Stay somewhere central in town. We managed to find this amazing hotel, Residence Bologna, not far from the action and it was in the perfect location. Read our full review here. We even managed to get a family sized room that was not too expensive considering it is the capital city, and there were two full bedrooms with a wall between. Hallelujah, the kids can go to bed and we can stay up for travel planning or watching tv…or blogging.
Winter isn’t all that cold in the city, but it isn’t beach weather either. The surrounding countryside can get its fair share of snowfall but the city usually manages to stay a few degrees warmer, as most cities do, and it usually just rains in December. Also, if going during the Christmas break, crowds start to form on December 28 like clockwork. Everyone wants to be in the big city for the New Year’s Festivities (which go off at 6 pm, not midnight, I love it!) so I would strongly suggest getting the majority of your “inside things/sightseeing” done before and leave the “outside things” for later.

Salzburg
Thanks to Carolyn from Holidays to Europe
A fairytale town at any time of year, with the addition of twinkling fairy lights and beautifully decorated trees, Salzburg becomes a real winter wonderland in the colder months and makes it one of the best places to travel in Europe in winter.
If travelling in Europe in winter, you won’t be able to resist the charm of the Christmas markets which appear on Salzburg’s streets towards the end of November. The Christkindlmarkt dominates the Old Town and here the whole family will enjoy browsing the Christmas decorations, handmade wooden toys and trinkets, and sampling gingerbread and roasted chestnuts.
At Hellbrunn Palace, kids can post off their own Christmas letter at the special Christmas Post Office, as well as enjoying pony rides and a petting zoo.
A great way to admire the stunning architecture of Salzburg and its winter dusting of snow is on a horse and carriage ride around the Old Town.
Try out your ice skating skills (or just watch) at the ice-rink that is built in Mozart Square during winter. For lovers of ‘The Sound of Music’, no visit to Salzburg is complete without wandering the grounds of Mirabell Palace.
Be sure to catch the funicular (rack railway) to Hohensalzburg Fortress for great views over the city.
Salzburg is a great choice for one of the winter getaways Europe offers for the whole family and with its location in the heart of Europe, it is easy to reach by air, train or car.

Tyrol
Thanks to Linda from Travel Tyrol
There is a misconception that winter holidays in the Tyrolean Alps are boring if you don’t ski. After spending eight winters with our son in this mountainous Austrian province, I am here to tell you differently.
Yes, a family skiing holiday is great fun. Tyrol has a great many family-friendly ski resorts that caters for children of all ages, even those who are too young to ski. The Schlick 2000 resort in the Stubai Valley is our favourite for families and beginners. But there’s a lot more to do in Tyrol in winter with kids. Here are some insider tips to inspire you:
- Explore Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, on a self-guided walking tour. Climb the City Tower for great views of the surrounding mountains. Better still, take the cable car from the city to the top of the Nordkette mountains.
- Go sledding! It’s less strenuous than skiing and no training is needed as long as you take it slow until you get the hang of it. Various ski resorts with toboggan runs have sleds to rent at the cable car stations.
- Experience the unique Tyrolean Advent spirit at the Christmas markets if you’re visiting in December. They all cater for kids in various exciting ways. Good options are the Christmas markets in Innsbruck, Seefeld in Tirol, Rattenberg, and Mayrhofen. But heck, every little village sets out to make Christmas and New Year fun for the whole family.
Innsbruck or an Alpine village with easy access to ski resorts as well as other attractions are good options to stay with kids in winter in Tyrol. Innsbruck is easily accessible by air from major UK, Dutch, and German cities. Of course, it can also easily be reached by train from Germany, Italy, and Switzerland.

Slovakia
Thanks to Dana from The Talking Suitcase
Slovakia’s capital city, Bratislava, may not be on most parents radar as one of the best European destinations in December with kids, but the city has so much to offer the entire family.
If planning a winter trip, the best time to visit is in December to experience the Christmas Market. Families can wander over 100 red and white stalls bursting with homemade goods and traditional Slovakian cuisine. The Bratislavské rožky, a crescent shaped pastry, must be sampled. It is delicious! Exploring the Old Town and hunting down the famous statues, seeing St. Martins Cathedral, visiting the Bratislava Castle, and stopping by St. Michael’s Gate are a few attractions worth seeing. For families with time to go outside the city center, kids are sure to enjoy the Atlantis Science Center and Zoo Bratislava. We suggest getting the Bratislava City Card to save money.
Getting to Bratislava is easy from popular winter destinations such as Vienna and Budapest. My family of four took the bus from the Vienna Airport to Bratislava for less than 20€ total! This was approximately half the cost of the train and took roughly the same amount of time. Families will likely enjoy the extra space offered by renting an apartment. However, there are plenty of hotels within walking distance of the Old Town to suit all budgets. Make sure to add this underrated city to your next European adventure!

Bulgaria
Thanks to Sarah from A Social Nomad
The mountain town of Bansko is Bulgaria’s largest ski resort and is just two hours from the capital of Sofia. Nestled in the foothills of the Pirin National Park with the Rhodope and Rila mountains within touching distance, it’s a great place to experience a traditional white Christmas. It’s also a great place to experience a Bansko summer too!
Bansko is a holiday resort for all nationalities, within 2 hours of the Greek border and easy access for Turkey, Russia and Romania it boasts facilities for a great family holiday. It’s easy to rent an apartment here, fast internet access is ubiquitous and it’s not at all expensive. In fact, the mountain resort has been recommended for several years in a row as being the cheapest place to ski in Europe!
As well as skiing and snowboarding you’ll find snowmobiles, dune buggies (yes even in winter), snowshoeing and fabulous hot springs – both free ones in the woods and fabulous luxurious ones when you want to treat yourself. At the end of the day, there are numerous local restaurants (Mehanas) with open roaring fires and heaps of great local food and good Bulgarian wine to enjoy.

Switzerland
Thanks to Sharon from Simpler and Smarter
We spent Christmas 2017 in Switzerland and it is absolutely perfect for anyone wondering where to go in Europe in winter for that stereotypical white Christmas we grow up hearing about in Australia.
There are fabulous Christmas markets, Christmas events, decorations and a good possibility of snow with places where you can be guaranteed it. Everything is picture perfect.
We travelled around Switzerland for two weeks over the Christmas period and had snow everywhere. Nothing will ever beat my memory of walking along Lake Geneva in a Christmas market with the kids, snow softly falling, driving some vin chaud (hot wine) with carols playing. I have never felt so much Christmas spirit!
Montreux on Lake Geneva is definitely a must visit as they have a whole Christmas festival – you can visit Santa’s workshop up in the mountains, see Santa flying over Lake Geneva, experience a medieval Christmas and there is a fabulous Christmas market.
We spent Christmas Day sledding in Leukerbad which was just perfect. There is a great chance of getting snow here and you can get a cable car easily to surrounding mountains to pretty much guarantee it.
It’s easy to get to Switzerland and travel around. It’s in the centre of Europe with great public transport although we found a car easier and more economical.

Interlaken
Thanks to Arzo from Arzo Travels
While Switzerland is a winter wonderland for young and old in winter, it is Interlaken that is probably one of the best places for kids.
Located between Montreux and Lucerne the region of Interlaken (though the town of Interlaken is lovely, I am taking more of the region) is perfect for kids: snow, lakes, mountains, and many winter sport activities for all ages make it the perfect place to visit in winter.
If your kids are a bit older they will enjoy a trip to Schilthorn – Piz Gloria which was a filming location for a James Bond movie. They can visit the 007 museum and enjoy the interactive museum where they can touch and replay many scenes of the movie.
They will probably love to eat in the revolving restaurant, too!
If your kids have never been skiing then you should book some ski lessons for the kids – the region is one of the best and well known for winter sports of all kinds. Pick a slope that is suited for the needs of your family and enjoy an amazing sunny and yet snowy time in one of the most beautiful regions of the world.

Italy
Thanks to Claudia from My Adventures Across the World
Italy is a fantastic destination to visit any time of the year, including in the winter. Families travelling with kids never have a hard time finding places and activities that children love. While the Alps in the north and the Appennini cutting across the “boot” are the perfect place to see the snow and embark in adventure and winter sports, the volcanoes of Campania and Sicily are perfect hiking destinations. Big cities such as Rome, Florence, Milan or Naples have a great combination of cultural and fun activities – with parks galore for children. Smaller villages have that much missed “back then” feel, with life passing slowly. There are lakes, there’s the sea and the beautiful nature.
Last but not least, Italy is the ultimate foodie destination. While adults can indulge in the most gourmet style dishes; children will have their fair share of the perfect pizza, pasta, cotoletta alla milanese, tiramisu and gelato. Can’t go wrong with that!

Andorra
Thanks to Mar from Once in a Lifetime Journey
Andorra is a tiny country sandwiched between Spain and France with just 60,000 inhabitants and an average altitude of 2,000m. The main draw for visitors is the kilometres of snow and ski slopes with all levels of difficulty making them perfect for going with small kids that may be less proficient or first time skiers.
Aside from the host of ski-related activities, there are a lot of things to do in Andorra from the many centuries old Romanesque churches to hot springs at Caldea, the largest thermal spa complex in Europe which has day and night activities and pools for all age levels.

Barcelona
Thanks to Melissa from The Family Voyage
Are you looking for that European holiday charm without the frigid temperatures? Look no further than Barcelona!
In December and the beginning of January you’ll see every street adorned with twinkling light displays overhead as you stroll the cobbled streets with locals enjoying their own time away from work (rather than mobs of tourists like during other times of the year). Your days will be filled with exploring the diverse neighbourhoods all around the city and world-class attractions like the Picasso Museum and Sagrada Familia, all while basking in temperatures much more comfortable than the northern neighbours, making it a great choice if you would prefer one of the warmer winter destinations Europe offers. Our kids love visiting Barcelona. It’s visually exciting at every turn – Picasso’s unusual paintings, the tile mosaic lizard of Park Güell, the magic fountain at the base of Montjüic. And their favourite activity? Warming up with some fresh churros con chocolate after a chilly day of exploring.
Thanks to Sandy from Sleeps 5
Barcelona has an easy-going atmosphere and children are welcome almost everywhere.
The winter is mild, with average daytime high temperatures of 55-62 Fahrenheit or 14-18 degrees Celsius, and very few rainy days. Additional layers, like a hat or scarf, are needed after the early-evening sunset.
Outdoors, families can enjoy the open-air top level of a hop on hop off bus tour, feed birds on Placa de Catalunya, ride the cable car up to Montjuic and run around, or check out the paths along the seaside and harbour.
Indoors, families can tour Camp Nou, Europe’s largest football stadium, explore the highly-rated CosmoCaixa science museum, and have fun with interactive exhibits at the Maritime Museum or the Chocolate Museum.
For a tasty treat in cool weather, try churros con chocolate, a regional favourite of sweet, donut-like long breads dunked into a cup of warm chocolate pudding.
Getting to Barcelona is easy. The main railway station, Barcelona Sants, handles high-speed trains from far and wide, and the Barcelona airport receives regional and international flights. In the city, there are multiple transportation options such as shuttle, bus, taxi, or rapid transit.
Stay in the city centre to make the most of your visit to family-friendly Barcelona!

Lanzarote
Thanks to Josie from Where Jo Goes
The Spanish island of Lanzarote is only 78 miles off the coast of Africa making it a year round sunshine destination. If you are looking for the warmest place in January or December, then consider Lanzarote with temperatures range from 14 to 20 degrees celsius and the short flights from Europe mean it’s ideal for children. This Canarian island has plenty to offer families.
Ever visited a volcano? Timanfaya National Park is your opportunity. Take a tour and find out how more than 100 volcanos erupted to form this landscape resembling the surface of another planet. At the top, water is thrown into the geyser and erupts as steam.
The art of Cesar Manrique is another drawcard, visit his house at the Fundacion Manrique where lava flows through the interior and subterranean rooms resemble an Avengers style lair. Jameos del Agua, a network of caves turned into an open air theatre, is another Manrique creation as are the colourful mobiles you will see everywhere on the island.
Canarian food includes Spanish favourites popular with kids, paella and tapas
Throw in black sand beaches, camel riding, water parks, boat trips, body boarding at Caleta de Famara and accommodation ranging from yurt villages such as Lanzarote Retreats to five star all inclusive hotels like the Princess Yaiza Hotel and you’ve got yourself the ideal family holiday for an escape from the winter rain and cold.

20 ideal travel destinations in January
Travel
It’s time to buy tickets.
GQ
Let’s be honest, hardly anyone likes January. The holidays are over, we continue to be tormented by the New Year’s hangover, and we don’t feel like going to work at all. You have two options for how to spend this not the most pleasant month. You may be trying to shed the pounds you’ve put on over the holidays and be sad about having to get used to your routine again. Or you can go on a trip. January is not the tourist season. So flying somewhere at this time, firstly, is cheap. And secondly, you can easily buy tickets to anywhere in the world.
1. Lanzarote, Canary Islands
It’s no secret that winters in the Canary Islands are warm and sunny. If you decide to spend your January here, do not rush to go to the popular resorts of the eastern part of the Canaries. Drive to the western islands. Most of the landscape objects here were built by local architect Cesar Manrique. The islands also owe him their main attractions: a cactus park and a house that the architect built for himself. However, the main thing to admire here is nature. Particularly volcanoes. The Timanfaya National Park is known for its multicolored volcanic hills. If you don’t feel like climbing mountains, scuba dive into the underwater world.
2. Silver Lake, Los Angeles
The Venice of California area is getting cooler every year. Now this is definitely the place to come to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and take a break from the chic of Los Angeles. There are no beaches here, but the spirit of measured rest is hovering: houses on the slopes of green hills and palm trees along the boulevards with vintage T-shirts and vinyl records. Silver Lake has many farmers’ markets and surfer shops, graffiti shops, and eateries. Here is eternal summer, hip-hop and fun (even in January).
3. Barbados
“Beach, food, alcohol and dancing” is how Rihanna sang about her perfect day in Barbados. The relaxed atmosphere of the Caribbean Islands will take you over as soon as you arrive here. Holidays on the glamorous west coast are luxurious and pull on all five stars. But the further south you go, the more you feel the local flavor: cozy restaurants, fresh seafood dishes and the sounds of reggae coming from everywhere. If you are a fan of a more measured holiday, the east coast is for you. You can also come here for the cool surfers and white sand beaches. In January, the rainy season ends in Barbados, which means that you can fully enjoy the warmth and sun.
4. Cape Verde
Cape Verde is a small cluster of volcanic islands almost a thousand kilometers from Senegal in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. But believe me, you should come here: miles of ivory beaches, perfect waves for surfing and incredible scenery. Although Cape Verde is close to the equator, in January the average temperature here is 25 ˚C. And another huge advantage of the evergreen island is the presence of eco-hotels that can compete with both budget and high-class hotels. They run entirely on renewable energy sources. So if you want to not only have a good rest, but also help preserve nature, then Cape Verde is an ideal option.
5. Montreal, Canada
If partying outside in sub-zero temperatures sounds good to you, come to Montreal. The annual Igloofest street festival gathers all those who like to dance (and freeze) to the songs of the coolest performers. In addition, the French-style snow-covered buildings of Montreal look bewitching. To fully enjoy the beauty of the city, you can climb Mount Royal. If you missed the hipsters who stayed in the 2000s, Montreal has a reminder of their culture: hot smoked meat sandwiches and bagels (they are even tastier than New York ones). You can also try poutine, Quebec’s national french fries fast food (not what you might think).
6. China
In January, there are almost no tourists in China – at this time strong cold winds blow here. So you will have a great opportunity to quietly consider the main attractions: the Terracotta Army and the Great Wall of China. By the way, covered with snow, they look even more fascinating. In January, hotel prices are much lower than usual. Therefore, you can spend the saved money on national cuisine restaurants. For example, try baozi – local dumplings with broth inside. In January, the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival is held in China, which entered the Guinness Book of Records as the longest. At night, the ice sculptures are illuminated, which looks very impressive. If you decide to watch it, don’t forget to dress warmly. The temperature can reach -24 ˚C.
7. Panama
If you want a great beach photo, Panama is the easiest place to take it. Yes, this resort is not as popular as neighboring Colombia and Costa Rica. But there are many beautiful beaches here, since this is a small state: a thin strip of land between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. There are many islands near Panama. For example, the San Blas archipelago. Unlike many tourist-only resort islands, San Blas will have an indigenous Kuna tribe living next door to you. There are no luxury villas here, but there are bungalows with thatched roofs, like the locals.
8. Val d’Isere
In mid-January, all New Year’s holidays end and no school holidays are foreseen. So you can safely go to European ski resorts. Particularly in Val d’Isère. And not just for the best slopes on the continent. But also for the sake of realizing that this ski resort is not far from sunny Saint-Tropez. Over the past five years, many hotels have appeared in the city, from hotels with ordinary rooms to hotels with chalets. Most of them have a cable car, so you can easily climb up the mountains to ride.
9. Porto, Portugal
Without a doubt, Portugal is an amazing country. The record 20 million tourists who visited it last year will most likely confirm this. In January, you should not go to Portugal for a beach holiday, you are unlikely to get a tan. But you can enjoy a mild and warm winter. Moreover, the prices at this time are lower than usual. Porto, once a typical small European city, has seen a revival in the last few years. The once quiet medieval streets are filled with cafes. The old buildings have now been refurbished and converted into hotels by local designers.
10. Paddington, Australia
If you like the relaxed and cosmopolitan Sydney, but it’s too modern for you, then Paddington is the perfect place to relax. This beautiful city is just as noisy and fun as Sydney. And as cozy as in small towns with colorful houses in the Victorian style. The main pedestrian street of Paddington – Oxford Street – is no different from other similar streets: there are many cafes, pubs and shops. But if you turn off Oxford, you will find exhibitions of local artists and studios of Australian designers in the alleyways. In January, Australia has great weather (as in any other time of the year). But only in January Sydney hosts the International Arts Festival, which is worth visiting at least once in a lifetime.
11. Nicaragua
This Central American country has it all: rainforests and pristine beaches, volcanoes and unusual eco-hotels. And although Nicaragua is truly a heavenly place, it also has a rainy season. That is why it is worth coming here in January, because at this time there is almost no precipitation. Just be careful. Perhaps, once in Nicaragua, you will not want to come back.
12. Brazil
Celebrate the New Year in Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo and go to the coast for a couple of weeks. Even if you spend all your annual savings on this trip, it will be worth it. Everything here is exactly as you imagined. Several kilometers of deserted beaches with golden sand, palm trees and turquoise waves. The best way to enjoy this is in the small coastal town of Transoco, or on the islands of Biopeba and Tinjare, where it is quiet and car-free.
13. Myanmar
Myanmar seems to be something magical at any time of the year. But it is especially good here in January (little rain, a lot of sun and heat). Myanmar mesmerizes with its pagodas and temples in the misty Himalayas and enchants with untouched tropical islands.
14. Gold Coast, Australia
If you want to start the year on a bright note, Australia is the place to be. First to Sydney, where the best New Year’s parties take place, and then go on a trip along the east coast. It’s beautiful: the Gold Coast, the Great Barrier Reef, Byron Bay. In January there is no heat and annoying tourists. So you can fully enjoy the gorgeous beaches, delicious food and beautiful private islands.
15. Belize
It’s hot, humid and rainy. Moreover, hurricanes and tropical storms are not uncommon in Belize. But we hope that this information did not confuse you too much. In fact, Belize is a Caribbean paradise in the middle of the jungle with stunning beaches. If you get tired of sunbathing, go see the Mayan ruins. The best time to visit Belize is in January or February. At this time, it is not too hot and humid here.
16.
Thailand
This heavenly place is especially beautiful in January. Yes, at this time there are a lot of tourists here, but not as many as during the New Year holidays. In Thailand, it is worth visiting both the capital and the islands along the Andaman coast: Phi Phi, Phuket and Koh Lanta. If you want to go to the eastern islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Tau, it’s better to wait until March, because due to the rainy season in January, you won’t be able to sunbathe on them.
17. South Africa
We can name dozens of reasons why you should visit South Africa. But in short: delicious food and wine, beaches, ocean and hotels. Stunning scenery from the Garden Route and the Western Cape to the Karoo. But the main memory of your trip will be meeting with wildlife on a safari.
18. Bruges, Belgium
This small Belgian town is one of those rare places that is charming at any time of the year. It can be described in the words of the hero of the film “Lie low in Bruges”: “Damn’s fairy tale. ” It is worth going here for french fries, beer and snowy winter. In addition, snow and frost are a great reason to linger in some bar with Belgian beer or in an antique shop. Bruges has many beautiful canal-lined hotels and atmospheric restaurants where you can dine by candlelight. Be sure to try the moul-frit (a local dish of mussels and french fries). It is enough to spend only a few days in Bruges. But during this time you will have time to enjoy the charm of the city and gain a few extra pounds.
19. Mexico
The Mexican winter has everything that ours lacks: warmth, a riot of colors and an abundance of exotics. Parties on the beach, yoga in the shade of trees, swimming in cenotes. Chances are you, like us, will fall in love with the spirit of Tulum and the small island of Holbox, where everyone goes barefoot. In Mexico, you can relax in different ways. If you want to enjoy colonial architecture, go to Merida. And if you want to lie on the beach, then Sayulita is best suited for this. In any case, the weather is wonderful on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts: warm and almost cloudless.
20. Rajasthan, India
It is also worth going to the Indian state of rajas in January. At this time it is warm and there are not too many tourists. So you can fully enjoy the unusual architecture, similar to the scenery for Bollywood films. Don’t forget to visit the main treasures of India: Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur.
Leave room on your phone for some forgotten sights like the Jal Mahal or the lost city of Bhangar. Rajasthan is also worth visiting in January because this is the perfect time for an Arabian Night-style safari in Jaisalmer (this city is in the middle of the desert). There you can ride camels and, like a real Bedouin, spend the night in the open air.

January is the best time to buy shoes, clothes and other goods at the maximum discount.
Paris has long been considered a trendsetter for the whole of Europe. Sales start in January. But the specific date of the “sale” is determined a few months before the sales every year. The largest shopping center not only in Paris, but also in Europe is the Lafayette Gallery. It is located on Boulevard Haussman, opposite the store is the exit from the Chaussee d’Antin – La Fayette metro station. The shopping center is presented in the form of three separate Lafayette stores: Coupole, Homme and Maison. In the first two, you can buy both men’s and women’s clothing, jewelry, perfumes and a wide variety of other goods of different brands. In the last store you can buy a variety of goods for the home.
Printemps is located on the same boulevard as Lafayette. The department store is an eleven-story complex where you can find a variety of brands. London usually does not have winter or summer sales, which are typical for most cities in Europe. Here, shops and boutiques themselves set the date and time of discounts. Liberty department store is the most colorful and popular place in London. The department store is located in the Soho area. When you get to Liberty, it’s like visiting someone’s house, not a mall, because the atmosphere there is incredible. The department store is a symbol of London, so you should definitely visit it.
Dover Street Market is no less unique. Here you can find clothes from both famous designers and beginners. Some argue that going to the DSM replaces the museum, since the space of the mall is decorated quite unusually. Harrods is also one of the most popular shopping destinations. It was built back in 1834 in the Knightsbridge area. On Sunday, London shops are open, but open a little later.

Where not to go in January
As you can see, it is quite difficult to decide where to fly for the January holidays, the choice is really great. When choosing, it is also very important to know where it is better not to go at this time so as not to spoil your vacation. In January, you should not go to countries that are close to the equator, because there will be a rainy season. If you move up or down, then the gap between the seasons will be reduced, as well as their connection in the rainy season, which falls precisely on the winter months.
In Bali, it rains almost every day until April, so the water becomes cloudy and it is difficult to swim. However, on other islands in Indonesia, the situation may be the opposite.
From December to February, tourists call Iceland the country of darkness and ice. There are only 5 hours of daylight. The only reason to visit Iceland is the northern lights, but no one can guarantee that you will see them. Beyond the Arctic Circle were countries such as Alaska in the United States, the Scandinavian Mountains, Northern Canada and Greenland in Denmark. Sun lovers are unlikely to like these countries.
Now you know how you can spend your winter vacation, which warm countries you can visit in January and which ones you can go to even without a visa. Most travelers go to Gorny Altai in the summer, at least in the off-season. In winter, the region is cold and snowy, but if you are not afraid of frost, there is something to do here. For example, you can drive a car along the Chuisky tract, one of the most famous routes in Russia. It crosses mountain ranges, uplands and basins, connecting Russia and Mongolia. The views are amazing: this is the rare case when the road itself is an attraction that never ceases to amaze. National Geographic magazine even included the Chuisky tract in the top ten most beautiful roads in the world.
After a road trip along the Chuisky tract, you can rent a house on the banks of the Katun River near the village of Chemal. There are many popular tourist spots nearby, such as the Karakol Lakes and the Chemal Hydroelectric Power Plant. The village has a well-developed infrastructure: there is communication, housing, cafes, paved roads. A modest one-bedroom house at the Sunkar tourist base will cost 7191 R from December 31 to January 2. If you want more comfort, I recommend cottages in the Klever Resort complex with excellent service, spa and mountain views from the window for 35,000 R per night. There is also the Altay Sense eco-hotel, where you can drop in with the whole family and live surrounded by Altai beauty. The room costs from 10,000 R per day. There are few options left on Booking, so if they run out, look for free rooms on the official websites of local resorts.

Gorny Altai: what you need to know before your trip
You can also have a great rest on Lake Teletskoye. A skating rink is arranged right on it, and there are ski slopes at the Teletsky resort, which is located nearby. A lot of snow falls here – an exemplary New Year’s atmosphere.
Prices for ski passes are adequate: a day of skiing on weekends and holidays costs 1400 R. If you take more days, it will be cheaper. For example, a ski pass on vacation for 4 days will cost 4000 R. You can also ride an airboat right through the snowdrifts and ice, the cost is 2200 R per person. There are other entertainments: ATVs, a husky kennel, snowmobiles, paragliding.
Arriving at Lake Teletskoye, travelers usually stop at the village of Artybash. But for these New Year holidays, housing is rapidly being dismantled – if you want to stay there, I advise you to hurry. A night in the Biya Bravo guest house costs 7000 R from December 31 to January 2.

Dagestan
People go to Dagestan to celebrate the New Year without snow, but with a rich Caucasian feast. The local people are very welcoming – it’s easy to get an invitation from the owners of the guest house where you stay. You can also arrange a feast yourself if you buy fresh products at the local market or just go to the first cafe somewhere in the mountains. You won’t be able to lose weight: everything is too tasty. I recommend trying chudu cakes with pumpkin or greens, lagman soup, khinkal — boiled dough with meat — kebabs and apricot porridge.
Gastronomic pleasure smoothly flows into aesthetic pleasure when you find the strength to leave the table and go on a journey to multinational Derbent. This is one of the oldest cities in the world where you can admire the mountains, the sea and architecture. The author of the Tinkoff Journal, Irena, believes that walking along the narrow streets of the quarters of the Old City is no less interesting than walking in Rome or Jerusalem. I agree with this: I like to wander around the ancient fortress of Naryn-kala, which was built in the 8th century on a mountain above the city, the tangled streets and the bustling market.
/faq-dagestan/
Dagestan: what you need to know before your trip
You can stay at a hotel near the Caspian Sea, for example, in Golden Beach: a room costs 14,000 R for two nights. There are also cheaper options: in Derbent there are many free housing on the coast. Prices are pleasant – from 1500 R per night per person for a double room with a view.
In winter, the mountains are monochrome: everything is yellow, in some places there is snow. In my opinion, this is not a reason to postpone the trip: the landscapes are still beautiful, and there are fewer tourists at this time of the year than in spring or summer. I advise you to drive to the Sulak Canyon, to which the road is open even in winter. It is better to take a car with a driver so as not to strain yourself while driving. Rent costs from 5000 R per day. If you want to spend the night near the canyon, you need to pay extra for accommodation for the driver.
I advise you to plan a trip to the mountains already on the spot. You can’t guess in advance how comfortable the weather will be for walking: in the daytime it’s +10 °C and the sun, and in the evening it’s -5 °C and wild wind. In my experience, snow, rain, and blue skies with no clouds are equally likely. I advise you to watch the weather forecast the day before and still dress warmer, even if the day promises to be clear.
Do not forget to take a waterproof and windproof jacket, warm pants, hat, sweater, thermal underwear. Simple thin sneakers will not work, it is better to find closed shoes with grooved soles so that they do not slip.
What else to do: to see the largest dune in Europe and be surprised by the world’s only rocket ekranoplan.

Kamchatka
It is worth going to Kamchatka if only to meet the year 2022 first in the country. When it is 15:00 in Moscow on December 31, salutes and fireworks are already firing with might and main in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
Winter in Kamchatka is suitable for unusual entertainment. For example, you can ride snowmobiles from Kamchatkaland to Gorely and Mutnovsky volcanoes. A one-day tour costs from 7200 R.
After that, it’s nice to soak in hot thermal springs at one of the recreation centers on Paratunka. For example, come to the Laguna Spa Hotel, where, in addition to thermal pools, they offer massages, cedar barrels and body wraps. It is not necessary to settle, a visit to the thermal complex costs 450 RUR.

Kamchatka: what you need to know before the trip
I advise experienced athletes to try to get by helicopter to the top of the volcano and go down on a snowboard – this is called heli-skiing. Such tours cost from 250,000 R for 5 days.
Thrill seekers can go winter surfing in the Pacific Ocean with local guys from Quiksilver Surf Camp. They set up a portable bath right on the shore, change clothes and warm themselves there, and then catch the steep waves in the ocean. Training costs from 4000 R. It is not commonplace and very impressive.
Surfing in Kamchatka is not easy due to the abrupt change of weather and cold climate, but with the right equipment it will be a pleasure
both sides with luggage. It will not be easy to organize all the activities on your own, but you can go with a tour, for example, from the Kamchatka Freeride Community. They have different programs – both for beginners in active winter sports and for advanced guys. The cost of a week trip — from 98,000 R for double occupancy for one person on New Year’s holidays.
I also consider Kamchatka to be a cool destination for gastronomic experiences. I volunteered at the Quiksilver surf camp and lived on the Pacific coast. Every day we prepared dishes from Kamchatka products: boiled crabs and salmon soup, salted caviar, made jam from berries. It was incredibly delicious. Products are sold at local markets: for example, fresh fish costs from 250 R per kilogram.

Murmansk region
In January, severe and capricious weather in the Murmansk region – travelers’ plans can be disrupted by a blizzard and squally wind. Do not forget warm clothes and put on several layers: windproof and waterproof jacket, puff, thermal underwear for the coldest weather. And also a thick sweater, mittens, woolen socks and a hat.
I traveled around the Kola Peninsula and the Murmansk region for a week in December: I walked around Murmansk, went to the village to the Sami – the local people, – rode snowmobiles. It was very cold. The thermometer showed about -10 °C, but because of the wind it seemed that everything was -20 °C outside. I still liked it.

scheduled locations. But if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to celebrate the New Year on the shores of the Arctic Ocean and admire the northern lights. It is not easy to catch him: you cannot see the radiance when it is cloudy or the full moon. But the author of Tinkoff Magazine, Kristina, knows how to increase the chances of success.
One of the most popular places in the region is the atmospheric village of Teriberka. There I advise you to take a walk around the abandoned school and see old ships, try sea urchins for 70-100 R apiece in any cafe on the shore, and hand feed the reindeer on the farm. Locals sell cloudberry and lingonberry jam and tinctures, and fishermen sell sea delicacies: fish, scallops, sea urchins.
A direct flight from Moscow to Murmansk costs about 10,000 RUR. It is easy to find housing in the city, but it is problematic in Teriberka. Before the release of this article, I found free options only from January 3rd.
You can come to the Murmansk region for 3-4 days, spend the night in the city, and leave for different locations in one day. There will be a lot of moving, but you will also live in comfort.

Perm region
In my opinion, the Perm Territory in winter is one of the most beautiful regions of Russia. Trees are covered with snow and frost, on Mount Poljud they are pressed to the ground, and snowdrifts reach the windows.
Tours in the Perm region:
“Golden Compass”There are many snowmobile tours in the Ural Mountains: they go to the quaint rocks of the Stone Town; to the narrow but deep canyon of the Chusovaya River, where the film “The Geographer Drank His Globe Away” was filmed; walking among the snow-covered forest. Tours cost from 3000 R per person. The Perm Territory is also rich in rocks and small peaks, which offer a picturesque view of the surrounding forests and nature.
To combine business with pleasure, you can spend a couple of days at the Gubakha ski resort: go skiing or snowboarding, and then drink hot mulled wine in a bar or dive into a snowdrift from a hot barrel bath at the resort for 600 R per hour. A ski pass for a day costs 1500 R. When the muscles are completely clogged, you can take a snowmobile tour and ride around the beauties of the region.
At the time of publication of the article, air tickets to the Perm Territory from Moscow for the New Year holidays cost from 9,000 RUR. Housing is similar to the situation in the Murmansk Region: there are many options in Perm, and there are practically none outside them. If there are no free options on Booking, I advise you to look for a house on Avito.
What else to do: take a walk around Perm and finally try picnics.

Sheregesh
If you like winter sports, then Sheregesh is a great option for New Year holidays. This is a village in the Kemerovo region, where a large ski resort is located. Sheregesh is known for the so-called puff – soft and dry snow. It is comfortable to ride on it in any weather, so the season at the resort lasts from November to May. It has all the infrastructure: large houses for rent, saunas and a spa center, equipment rentals, bars and cafes right on the slope, ski lifts and snowmobiles.
In my opinion, the main disadvantage of Sheregesh is its remoteness from the airport. To get to it, you need to fly to Novokuznetsk and order a transfer from there. S7 offers the most flights: on New Year’s dates, a ticket from Moscow costs from 18 900 R in both directions. From Novokuznetsk to Sheregesh 2-3 hours. We booked a minibus for 10 people with an additional trailer for luggage for 10,000 rubles on Avito from local drivers. We rented a big house with a sauna and had a New Year’s party: on December 31, we cut salads together and watched The Irony of Fate, at night we danced until we dropped and set off fireworks, and on the morning of January 1 we were sleepily going to the ski slope. Renting a house for 10 people cost us 150,000 R in 8 days.
During the New Year holidays, you can learn how to ski or snowboard if you take an instructor or ask one of your experienced friends to help you. I ordered the services of an instructor at a rental on a slope, it cost 2000 R per hour.
If you are not new to skiing, then in Sheregesh there is an opportunity to try freeride – skiing off the prepared slopes. One-day freeride tours cost from 6000 RUR.
Other things to do: go to the Russian or juniper bath and ride a snowmobile.

Budapest
Hungary and Budapest are a great option for celebrating the New Year: you can feel the European spirit here, comfortable, beautiful, tasty, relatively inexpensive compared to other European cities, simple entry rules. At the time of publication, there are direct flights to Budapest for holidays from Moscow for 39,000 R. If you are ready to go off-peak dates and with a transfer in Warsaw, then you fly both ways for 15,000-20,000 R. I also advise you to check the tours on Travelata »: can be cheaper than booking flights and accommodations on your own.
If you are visiting Budapest for the first time, I recommend spending a couple of days for leisurely walks and the main sights of the city: the huge neo-Gothic parliament, the opera house, St. Stephen’s Basilica and Castle Hill with the Royal Palace, which offer a cool view of the Danube and Pest. You can also go ice skating at Vajdahunyad Castle for 1500 Ft (345 R) on weekdays and 2000 Ft (460 R) on weekends. Usually in Budapest at this time around 0 °C, so do not deny yourself the pleasure of drinking mulled wine and trying local pastries at Christmas markets.

Budapest: what you need to know before your trip
When your noses and fingers are completely cold, you can hang out in the thermal baths and pools with thermal water for the whole day. There are many similar complexes in Budapest, the most famous is Szechenyi. A visit costs 5900 Ft (1357 R) per day, here you can also order massages, peels and other spa treatments. I also like Gellert baths: they look more modern and luxurious, but the price is the same.

I was in Budapest a couple of years ago, but in the warm season I was at the Sziget festival. The city reminded me of Paris: there is a similar pompous architecture and a river embankment, which is pleasant to walk along. But there are more underground bars in Budapest. I was in Szimpla Kert and Csendes – these are establishments in dilapidated or abandoned spaces, it was atmospheric.

Georgia
Air travel to Tbilisi is not the most convenient, you will have to fly with a transfer. But there are a lot of housing options in Tbilisi: there are apartments with a view, cozy boutique hotels, and guest houses. Prices start from 1000 R per night per person.
Tbilisi is an interesting and colorful city, it can surprise a traveler who has been here more than once. You can take a long walk through its back streets: look at the houses on Rustaveli Avenue, wander around the botanical garden and communicate with locals at the flea market, where you often come across beautiful things, such as vintage jewelry.
/georgia-travel/
How much does it cost to relax in Georgia? In local establishments, wine flows like water, toasts are endless and it is impossible to stop eating khachapuri and khinkali. The company is easy to find in any restaurant, you can also meet some of the locals on Couchsurfing or Airbnb. Alternatively, visit a wine bar like Winelab or Dadi Wine Bar.
When you explore all of Tbilisi, I advise you to visit the surroundings. For example, Mtskheta to admire the monastery of Jvari 590 year of construction and a view of the confluence of two rivers, or Kakheti, where wineries are located. In “Kindzmarauli” tasting costs 8 GEL (180 R). There is also a winery “Shumi”, where the tour is free. I really like the hospitable and sincere attitude towards customers there.
It is better to travel around the country with a local driver and guide: firstly, some road users have a specific driving style; secondly, this way you can not deny yourself tastings. I usually look for a driver on Get your guide or Tripster. On the way to the wineries, ask him where you can go: probably there will be temples and monasteries along the way, the city of love Sighnaghi, the Alazani Valley or something else.

Zanzibar
If you don’t even want to think about snow, you can fly to Zanzibar, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, which belongs to Tanzania, for the New Year. There are exemplary beaches on the islands: turquoise water; white as flour, sand; tall palm trees. But swimming is not always comfortable: there are strong tides in Zanzibar, sometimes you have to walk 50 meters to the depth. However, the times of high and low tides are known in advance: weather forecasters create a schedule that travelers track through apps like Tides Near Me.
The Tides Near Me app for iOS and Android
The cultural program is also not the richest: there are few museums, galleries and entertainment centers. For me, Zanzibar is a lazy vacation: mostly people come here to gain strength and do nothing, have a leisurely dinner in a restaurant on the shore, see off the sunset, read a book under the sound of the surf.
If you still want to be active, you can ride around the islands or go to Stone Town, the capital of Zanzibar. This is a city with colonial architecture and African flavor, where it is pleasant to walk along the small streets. Freddie Mercury was born here, so travelers are advised to look into his house-museum. The entrance will cost 20,000 TZS (640 R).
Boat captains ride tourists, on average, a tour for two costs from 2000 RUR. Source: LMspenser / Shutterstock
It’s also worth wandering through local markets: in Africa, they often sell cool handmade jewelry, souvenirs with bright African drawings, spices, fruits. Figurines and decorations are made of wood, they cost from 10,000 TZS (320 R).
Most often, I send my clients to Zanzibar, picking up a ready-made tour for them. This is more profitable than booking accommodation and flights on your own. Usually a flight costs from 30,000 R in both directions, and tours can be found for 50,000 R per person with food and accommodation. Prices are higher for New Year’s dates: the cheapest tour I’ve seen costs 90 000 R per person without food. The closer to the New Year, the fewer options and higher prices.

Mexico
Mexico is open for Russian tourists. They recently launched direct flights from Moscow to Cancun, but flights are not cheap. If you do not depart on holidays, you can catch a direct flight for 30,000 R one way. In the New Year, it is more expensive – from 55,000 R for a round-trip air ticket with long transfers. Maybe a tour would be better. At the time of publication of the article, a ticket costs from 150,000 R per person.
I have been wanting to go to Mexico for a long time. In the central part of the country, you can see the huge Mexico City and the Frida Kahlo house-museum, visit the vibrant cities of Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende. On the Yucatan Peninsula – explore the ancient Mayan cities, see a flock of pink flamingos and swim in underground wells in caves – cenotes. There are also cool amusement parks where they drive jeeps through the jungle, swim in an underground river with stalactites and stalagmites, and bungee down two long trails of suspension cables. On average, spending a day in it will cost $135 (9865 R) per person.

Alma-Ata is my favorite city in Central Asia. There are good roads, cool cafes, restaurants, public spaces and parks for walking. The Shymbulak ski resort is located right there, and two mountain gorges start right in the city. I have many friends in Alma-Ata and I come here often.
There are many interesting natural locations around Almaty that impress in any weather. For example, the Charyn Canyon is the younger brother of the Grand Canyon in America, which is in no way inferior to it in beauty. In winter, it is slightly covered with snow, and therefore looks even more epic. One-day tours to the canyon cost from 6500 KZT (1105 R), they are organized almost every day. I talked about my favorite places in the region in a separate article.
Excursions to the Charyn Canyon
In winter in Alma-Ata, you can visit the largest mountain skating rink “Medeu”. It is located in a picturesque mountain gorge with snowy peaks and shaggy firs – even if you don’t like to ride, it’s worth going there at least for the New Year’s atmosphere. Entrance will cost 1800 KZT (306 R), rent of skates – 1000 KZT (170 R).
Up the gorge there is a ski complex “Shymbulak”, where you can go skiing or just climb to an altitude of 3200 meters by cable car. Fans of outdoor activities will note the huge advantages of the resort, for example, a variety of trails – from green to black – and proximity to the city: you can go there to ride for a couple of hours and return.

But flying to Bucharest is cheaper: round-trip flights from Moscow with small transfers cost 12,000–17,000 RUR. There are also direct flights, but more expensive — 32,000 RUR.
I have long wanted to visit Transylvania. It is a region in northwestern Romania with small towns, old castles and mountain passes. It’s great to take a road trip to see Bran Castle, which the locals built on their own and where Count Dracula stayed, and the elegant Alpine-style Peles Palace.

Uzbekistan
If in the summer in Uzbekistan you don’t know where to put yourself from the forty-degree heat, then in the winter it is comfortable in the country and you can carefully consider everything. The most beautiful madrasahs and mosques in oriental style have been preserved here: Uzbekistan was part of the Great Silk Road. To see intricate paintings and ornaments, tourists come to Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva.
I like Samarkand the most. There is the Registan Square, where there are three madrasahs, the huge Bibi-Khanum mosque and the Shakhi-Zinda necropolis. A ready-made route to the main and most beautiful sights of the city is in my other article.
After the New Year holidays in Uzbekistan, there will definitely not be any difficulties with gifts for relatives and friends: the markets sell clothes with national ornaments, handmade dishes, jewelry, sweets and dried fruits for a penny. For example, a robe with embroidery costs 200,000 UZS (1360 R), a skullcap – from 150,000 UZS (1020 R), and a beautiful ceramic plate – from 20,000 UZS (136 R).
Registan Square in Samarkand
If you eat meat, in the New Year you will not only be beautiful, but also tasty. Try pilaf, samsa, kebabs, meat soups. It was in Uzbekistan that I ate the most delicious lamb in my life: when I was in the mountains, local friends cooked shish kebabs from fresh meat, and it was delicious. And in Samarkand and Tashkent, I liked to dine at the “Pilaf Centers”: they cook huge baths of a traditional dish. A portion costs from 25,000 UZS (170 R).
A flight to Tashkent from Moscow on New Year’s dates costs from 22,000 RUR. The most interesting accommodation options are guest houses where it’s great to chat with locals, and ancient buildings that take guests a couple of centuries back. Housing can be found for 500 R per night, but options with a private bathroom and modern renovation cost from 1500 R.

South Africa
January in South Africa is summer: +25 °С, sun and fresh ocean breeze. A trip here will be a real adventure, because in one trip you will be able to:
- Rent a car and drive through the Western Cape province.
- See penguins at Boulders Beach, Cape of Good Hope and Table Mountain in Cape Town.
- Eat oysters in the town of Knysna, where they are caught, for 30 ZAR (146 R) apiece and wash them down with South African wine.
- Go to a safari park like Garden Route Game Lodge and see lions, elephants, rhinos and zebras.
- Run among the vineyards in Stellenbosch.
- Fall in love with the Atlantic Ocean and try surfing.
A year ago, at the end of January, my friends and I implemented this plan, and it was one of the best vacations of my life. I told more about the trip in another article.
Ethiopian Airlines flight with a short connection in Addis Ababa is the most convenient. At the time of publication of the article, tickets for New Year’s dates cost an average of 67,000 RUR.
Housing in Cape Town is an art: I have never seen such a variety of cool modern apartments with wide terraces and ocean views. It is better to go on a trip with a company of 4-6 people: this way you can rent more expensive accommodation and share the expenses for everyone. For example, in Cape Town, we rented a luxury apartment with two bedrooms, a terrace, a barbecue area, a rooftop pool, a cool kitchen and a common area for 8100 ZAR (37,686 R) for 4 nights. But there were four of us, so it turned out 2500 R per person per night – quite excellent.

Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is one of the few Asian destinations where Russians can now get without any problems: a visa is issued upon arrival, and if there is a certificate of vaccination, quarantine is not needed. Direct flights by Aeroflot and Srilankan Airlines simplify the task. Therefore, this year I and all my friends are planning to go there for the winter.
In Sri Lanka, you can drink coconuts, lie on the beaches of the villages of Mirissa and Weligama under palm trees, and find many other entertainments. For example, rent motorcycles for 800 LKR (288 R) per day and go to the central part of the island to wander among the tea plantations in Ella, overcome 5381 steps together with pilgrims and climb Adam’s Peak – the sacred mountain of Sri Lanka – watch elephants in Udawalawe National Park.
When you get bored, you can join a surf camp at Solid Surf House or Kima Surf and catch your first wave. A week of training, accommodation, yoga and parties costs from 400 € (33,272 R).
On New Year’s dates, tickets are expensive and inconvenient, so a cool option is to fly to Sri Lanka for a month from mid-December to mid-January. There are direct flights from Moscow in both directions for 35,000 R. So you can fully enjoy all the delights of an islander’s life, get a tan, love surfing and have time to relax.

Croatia
New Year’s Eve will be off-season in Croatia, but this will only make it more interesting: there are fewer tourists, there is no sweltering heat on the coast, and ski resorts are open. The only negative is inconvenient air travel: I found flights with transfers for 33,000 R in both directions from Moscow.
The country is large, and it will not be possible to travel around it in one trip. But you can choose what you like best. It’s a good idea to take a rented car, at Rentalcars it costs from 2000 R per day. People go to Zagreb for the New Year atmosphere to admire the illuminations and Christmas decorations. Then you can go to the coast to the cities of Split, Dubrovnik or Pula, take a walk among the ancient palaces, ruins and cramped streets.

Croatia: what you need to know before your trip
If the winter is cold, be sure to take a trip to the Plitvice Lakes. This is a system of 16 azure-blue karst lakes that smoothly flow from one to another. When frost hits or snow falls, the water in small waterfalls between the lakes freezes – it looks fantastically beautiful.
When you miss the snow, go to the local ski resorts “Sleme” and “Platak”. They are more suitable for beginners because the slopes are quite gentle. There are 8-10 tracks, mostly blue ones. But for 1-2 days it’s still great for variety and contrasts.

Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands
Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands seem distant and unreal. But now is a great time to travel to South America: there are few coronavirus restrictions, entry by a negative PCR test, a visa is not needed. And the impressions from the trip will last for a year ahead. The main thing is to save up for a flight: at the time of publication of the article, the cheapest option for the New Year holidays from Moscow to Quito in both directions costs from 70,000 RUR.
Quito is located at an altitude of 2850 meters above sea level and is one of the highest capitals in the world. Around the city are the tropical jungle of the Amazon, active volcanoes, high waterfalls and Inca ruins. The country is small, and it is easy to arrange a road trip through its territory with a daily bright change of landscapes. At Rentalcars, renting a car on an automatic machine costs from 1500 R per day.
It is worth flying to the Galapagos Islands only if you have at least 2 weeks to travel. On the islands, no one is in a hurry, and interesting places are located in different locations, between which you need to travel by ferry. You won’t see anything in a couple of days, just spend a lot of money: a round-trip flight from Quito to the Galapagos Islands costs 35,000-40,000 R.
People fly to the islands to enjoy the local flora and fauna: see Galapagos tortoises, fur seals, huge iguanas and blue boobies. The underwater world here is also beautiful: you can see sharks, rays and bright fish. True, it will not be easy for beginners: almost all spots are deep and require at least minimal preparation. But you can combine business with pleasure and pass the international certification of PADI divers here. The cost of a one-day diving tour with two dives and all equipment is from $200 (R14,630).
This New Year’s Eve, I’m organizing a trip to Ecuador for a client to visit the Galapagos Islands for 3 weeks. The route turned out to be intense: a week on the mainland and 2 weeks on the islands with movements between them. The whole trip will cost them 700,000 R for two, including air travel, car rental, accommodation and diving.

Ten reasons to relax in Russia
Russia remains in the top five most popular destinations of the summer season for all tour operators of mass recreation. “Vestnik ATOR” has compiled a rating of the TOP-10 advantages of holidays in Russia.
Contrary to the common stereotype, now a vacation in Russia is not a tribute to circumstances, but a conscious choice of many tourists. Information support for domestic tourism in recent years has helped Russians to understand that all the beauties of our country, which they previously saw only in paintings, photographs and books, are quite possible to see with their own eyes. We interviewed leading tour operators selling tours in Russia and compiled a list of top reasons to help you choose Russia as your holiday destination.
1. NATURAL VARIETY AND ALL-YEAR REST
Russia is the biggest country in the world. On its territory there are numerous unique natural and historical monuments that are definitely worth seeing. What is worth striking in its beauty Lake Baikal, the valley of geysers in Kamchatka, Mount Ai-Petri in the Crimea, Elbrus. You can list indefinitely.
In Russia you can find sandy beaches and warm sea, high mountains and permafrost, wide and small rivers and alpine meadows. All types of recreation are available in Russia, including extreme, family and eco-tourism. “We also have good thermal resorts,” adds Alena Gromova, director of the domestic market of the tour operator Coral Travel.
An important advantage of Russian resorts is that many of our resorts can be visited all year round – for example, go to Sochi for the New Year or look at the local spring bloom (especially since prices drop in beach resorts in winter). The climatic features of our country make it possible to enjoy a variety of types of recreation in autumn, winter and spring: medical and health tourism, the whole range of outdoor activities – from ski tours to trekking, sightseeing, pilgrimage trips and much more.
Needless to say, the excursion opportunities for domestic tourism in Russia are practically inexhaustible – Russia ranks third in the world in terms of saturation with cultural and historical monuments. The process is not going fast, but gradually tourists are trying to expand the geography of trips around Russia.
Tourists are interested not only in Moscow and St. Petersburg or the traditional routes of the Golden Ring.
Tourist routes to Central Russia, the Russian North, the Urals, Siberia, the Far East are gaining popularity to get acquainted with the local ethnic group, rich culture and history of the region.
Branded routes appeared in the regions, tested and recommended by experts of the Committee for Import Substitution in Tourism.
2. BEACH HOLIDAYS – ENTERTAINMENT FOR EVERY TASTE
Russia has a huge variety of beach resorts. At the disposal of tourists are options for relaxing in bays or on the shores of the “open” sea, sandy and pebble beaches of various types. Moreover, you can even choose the appropriate type of climate – if in the Krasnodar Territory, for example, it is subtropical, then on the modern climate map of Crimea there are 5 macro-regions (continental steppes, coastal steppes, foothill forest-steppes, mountain forests and sub-Mediterranean).
Finally, Russian beach resorts are always not only “seal rest”. From the beach resorts of Russia, you can go on both simple sightseeing tours and excursions to the mountains, waterfalls, karst caves, vineyards, ancient dolmens, tea plantations.
Drive along the river bed in a military truck, go rafting, fishing, jeeping or ride yachts, mountain bikes and ATVs, explore underground rivers with an excursion.
You can do ethnographic or ethno-gastronomic tourism – visit the settlements of small nationalities located on the territory of resort areas and try local specialties.
Lots of entertainment for kids too. “Almost every resort in the Krasnodar Territory has a water park, and in some cities there are even several. The Gelendzhik water park is considered the largest in Russia – 17 pools, 44 slides, 67 slopes. There are amusement parks, amusement parks, zoos, dolphinariums, oceanariums at every resort. Everyone will find something interesting for themselves – both adults and children. Plus, in each resort town, the administration is trying to hold festivals, carnivals, concerts, shows, ”says Dmitry Sharov, general director of the Multitour tour operator.
3. VARIANTS OF ACCOMMODATION FOR ANY WALLET AND TASTE
There are many options for accommodation in our resorts. Someone has remained at the level of the 90s and does not strive for development and improvement, but offers fairly low prices. But still, many hotels are being renovated and rebuilt. New hotels are being created that already meet the modern tastes and needs of Russians – with smiling staff, beautiful and equipped rooms, SPA zones, swimming pools, massage parlors, gyms and much more.
Many tourists who are accustomed to relaxing abroad are increasingly considering vacation options in Russia, looking for the usual comfortable accommodation facilities here, and in recent years they have increasingly found them.
Tour operators agree that in Russia, both in beach resorts and in other regions, many accommodation facilities have been built that meet European standards, with a high level of service, good food, rooms equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable stay. And now the tourist has the opportunity to become one of the first guests. But if financial conditions do not allow – in almost any resort there is always the opportunity to find an option that is less comfortable, but much cheaper.
4. BEST CONDITIONS FOR TREATMENT, HEALTH AND RECREATION AT THE SAME TIME
It is not necessary to go to foreign resorts to get quality treatment and wellness treatments. You can go for treatment at the resorts of the Caucasian Mineral Waters, in the sanatoriums of Altai, the Urals, Western Siberia, the Moscow region and Central Russia, the Crimea, the Krasnodar Territory, Karelia. In many sanatoriums here, the medical base has been modernized, quality treatment is provided and there is a developed infrastructure. Accommodation facilities offering tours with treatment undergo appropriate certification, have qualified doctors and medical specialists in their staff, and have modern medical equipment.
The system of sanatorium treatment in Russia wins in comparison with foreign counterparts – in many cases in terms of cost, but even more often in terms of efficiency. Our resorts are famous for their excellent treatment facilities for almost all known diseases and the high level of medical training.
“Russian resorts have unique natural factors that allow not only to relax at sea, but also to improve the quality of the body and cure a number of diseases. Therefore, only in Russia there is such a term as “health resort treatment”, where in fact you can combine both rest and treatment, ”says the National Tour Operator ALEAN company.
5. REST WITHOUT ACCLIMATIZATION
Smooth transitions between climatic zones in Russia provide minimal acclimatization. This is very important for children, as their body is especially sensitive to climatic changes. Tourists will not lose a single day of rest due to poor health and will not suffer unpleasant consequences after returning home
6. NO LANGUAGE BARRIER, GENERAL MENTALITY
It is not necessary to know foreign languages in order to travel. The absence of a language barrier makes the rest within the country more comfortable for tourists who do not speak foreign languages. Vacationers in Russia can easily make an order in a cafe, buy the necessary things or express their wishes to the hotel staff.
“There will be no problems with the language misunderstanding of the locals. Also, tourists will receive a Russian approach to business and a Russian mentality. A broad soul is what distinguishes a Russian service from a foreign one. And this is possible only in Russia,” says Alena Gromova from Coral Travel.
7. RECREATION SAFETY AND ACCESSIBILITY OF MEDICAL CARE
One of the main advantages of resting at home is the security provided by Russian legislation throughout the country. In any emergency situations, tourists can be absolutely sure that their rights will be respected.
Free access to medical services is also important. “Having a vacation in Russia, a citizen of the country gets free access to medical care under the MHI policy in case of accidents and emergencies,” experts of the tour operator NTK Intourist say. The tourist does not have to “on the fingers” to explain to the doctor what happened. Communication with medical specialists in their native language significantly reduces the anxiety factor in emergency situations. In addition, services in private clinics in Russia are still much cheaper than abroad.
True, experts have recently advised to consider the possibility of obtaining an additional medical insurance policy (VHI) when traveling in Russia. It is especially needed for lovers of ski resorts, where clinics are often located far from the slopes themselves. If necessary, such a policy, among other things, will enable emergency transportation of the victim on a special board to the place of necessary treatment.
8. TRANSPORT ACCESSIBILITY AND THE USE OF A PASSPORT
You can get to Russian resorts in a variety of ways, while for foreign holidays, almost the only option is by plane. Traveling in Russia, you can use all possible means of transportation between cities – trains, planes, cars, river boats. Rail tourism is also actively developing – the most interesting tours by rail can be bought from the tour operator RZD Tour.
Budget tourists will be interested in bus tours, those who are afraid of flying – trains. The Russian railway system covers the entire country, trains are being actively renovated. It is now possible to get from Moscow to such popular tourist cities as St. Petersburg, Kazan by comfortable trains, and the duration of the trip starts from 4 hours – as by plane, given the time it takes to arrive at the airport and go through all stages of control and inspection.
Internal transport accessibility makes it possible for Russians to travel spontaneously – by car, train, plane, etc. and, if necessary, interrupt your vacation and easily get to your place of residence.
Add to this the ability to travel through internal documents. A domestic tourist does not need a passport. It is easy to get it, but if it is not there, then going on a trip tomorrow or even a week later will not work, there is no such problem inside Russia.
9. ALL INCLUSIVE IN RUSSIAN AND FOR RUSSIANS
It is no secret that many foreign hotels are guided in their work by tourists from certain countries. Russians often have a rest in the neighborhood with tourists from Germany, the CIS countries – building a service system, hotels summarize the habits and wishes of tourists of various nationalities.
Russian hotels focus almost exclusively on Russian tourists, and our all-inclusive approach takes into account the interests, tastes and diet of the Russian consumer. The all-inclusive system, which has now begun to appear in Russian hotels, is a tribute to the need. Tourists are accustomed to this system in Turkey and Egypt, according to tour operators. This information is confirmed by statistics – when booking holidays in Russia, tourists equally request All Inclusive, full board and half board systems (more than 20% of the demand for each food system). And hotels have to meet the demand of vacationers. Now hotels with such a food system can be found in all Russian resorts. Vestnik ATOR also compiled a list of the most popular Russian hotels with the AllInclusive system this summer.
It is important to note that in foreign resorts, the all-inclusive system is often a necessity, because. there is nothing else outside the hotel. In Russia, on the contrary, there are many places in the resorts where you can eat deliciously and inexpensively. Among other things, food in the resorts of Russia – both in cafes and in hotels – is familiar to our citizens, and this is especially convenient for tourists with children.
10. ALL PAYMENTS IN RUBLES AND BY RUBLE CARDS
Unexpected jumps in the ruble exchange rate against major world currencies that have occurred in the past 2-3 years have forced many tourists to abandon their already planned (and often even purchased) holidays. In domestic tourism, these risks are minimized. Payments for the purchase of the tour are made in rubles, as well as the calculations of tourists at the place of rest.
Of no small importance for payments with ruble cards (including the internal payment system “Mir”) is the fact that an increasing number of shops and service enterprises in Russian resorts are ready to accept bank cards for payment. And an extensive network of ATMs in our country (Russia is one of the leaders in their number in Europe) will make it easy to withdraw cash.
Vestnik ATOR would like to thank Coral Travel, NTK Intourist, National tour operator ALEAN, Multitour for help in compiling the rating of tour operators.

Where to go skiing in January?
Almost all tour operators like to work with ski resorts, knowing the high seasonal demand, they begin to prepare for it in advance, forming their programs in such a way as to make them more accessible to different categories of ski lovers. Given the big January holidays in Russia, tours to resorts with ski slopes are especially popular in January, February and
we are pleased to offer our tourists “special prices”.As there are no identical mountains, so there are no identical ski resorts, each is unique in its own way and offers its own set of services for different categories and, especially, the level of training of skiers.
For example, ski resorts in Switzerland (Zermatt, St. Moritz) are rightfully considered the most expensive and prestigious, designed for tourists of a higher level of sports training. The resort has alpine slopes, so tourists will be provided with snow all year round, and especially in December, January, February. And it’s quite easy to choose a prestigious hotel, always with your own SPA centers, since their number is large. If you are still a beginner skier, then take a closer look at France (the regions of Chamonix, Three Valleys, Cours Chavel are popular). Here you will find trails of all types of difficulty, from green, for beginners,
to black, designed for masters of alpine skiing. Any of the presented hotels will please you with a high level of service. The French Alps are also a high-altitude ski resort, so snow is plentiful here all year round. But, unlike quiet and calm Switzerland, these resorts are known for their active nightlife, so lovers of the mountain slopes will not be bored at night. And gourmets
taste their favorite dishes in Michelin-starred restaurants. If we talk about Austria (Ischgl, the Zillertal valley, Söldn, the land of Tyrol), then this region has the most extensive ski area. The feature of this region is that all these ski areas are united by a single ski pass. And about the number of clubs, restaurants,
entertainment pubs and bars can not be said, they are known throughout Europe. So here
a huge number of European “golden youth” is coming. And of course Italy! Oh mama mia! Dolomites. Without it, and in the ski world could not do.
The main skiing regions are Cervinia, Sestriere, Madonna – di – Campiglio. Why are they so famous
Italian ski resorts, and why tourists love them so much? Well, of course, like any
Italian land, with its hospitality and amazing cuisine. In addition, there is
trails for all tastes and possibilities of tourists. Leisure will help brighten up cute, family
restaurants and light shopping. And let’s not forget about Andorra (the best resort is Andorra la Vella). This region occupies
leading place in the number of skiers per season. Dictated it’s the lowest
prices for both package tours and air tickets, accommodation and ski pass. In its composition
Andorra has pistes of varying difficulty levels, although not as high quality as on
other resorts in Europe. Attractive Andorra as a place of winter leisure for skiers,
makes her famous duty-free shopping zone. The region has one, but not unimportant
a nuance that needs to be taken into account when choosing a more budgetary option for “skating” is little snow
winter.
