What to do in Gran Canaria in June

June is a month full of vibrant celebrations in Gran Canaria: the magical night of San Juan, the ocean of flowers that surround Las Palmas during Corpus Christi, the spectacular flowering of the blue tajinastes… With the arrival of summer, the island fills with life and festivities next to the sea.

The month that kicks off summer is one of the most attractive, as well as relatively quiet. It’s, in other words, the calm that precedes the summer storm.

1. Night of San Juan at the beach of Las Canteras

The summer solstice is also experienced intensely in Gran Canaria. On this magical night there are bonfires lit on the beaches, open-air dances and fireworks in various parts of the island, where the flame of San Juan lights up the night sky.

This celebration has a very special meaning for the people of Gran Canaria. Every 24th June, precisely on the day of San Juan, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria celebrates its Founding Festivities, commemorating its official foundation in 1478.

The historic district of Vegueta becomes the epicentre of an infinite number of cultural activities and open-air shows, rounded off by spectacular fireworks that are launched from Las Canteras beach to the sound of lively music.

2. Maspalomas International Carnival

The carnival of Maspalomas is one of the most important ones in Spain. It’s a big, open-minded and cheerful celebration where a lot of people dress up and take to the streets of the south of Gran Canaria.

For those who want to experience the carnival on the beach, the International Carnival of Maspalomas is the perfect date to enjoy the party at an enviable temperature and next to famous dunes.

This year 2022 it’ll be held on a somewhat atypical date: from the 9th to the 19th of June. Have fun with the Queen’s Gala, the Drag Gala, the Parade or the Burial of the Sardine, among others.

3. Bloom of the blue tajinaste

Before the start of summer, one of the most eye-catching natural spectacles of Gran Canaria takes place: the flowering of the blue tajinaste. This brightly-coloured explosion drowns the island’s landscape in colour and captivates its visitors.

This endemic plant, the pride of all Gran Canarian people, can grow up to three and a half metres high, and it elegantly splashes the path from the Caldera de los Marteles to the village of Tenteniguada with blue colour.

With that, the midlands on the eastern side of the island are covered with a blue blanket of  great natural beauty that dazzles the visitor. It’s a delicate, magical and unrepeatable spectacle that is well worth experiencing.

4. Lively Corpus Christi in Las Palmas

Corpus Christi is a spectacle you can’t miss if you’re visiting Gran Canaria in June. The Thursday is celebrated on the island’s capital in a very special way: by filling the area around Santa Ana Cathedral with colour.

This part of the old town of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is decorated with handmade carpets of flowers, painted sands and seeds that turn the ground into an ocean full of bright colours.

On the afternoon of the 16th of June, the solemn procession of the Blessed Sacrament will take place through the picturesque cobbled streets of the popular and historic district of Vegueta.

5. Holidayworld Maspalomas
