We base the humidity comfort level on the dew point, as it determines whether perspiration will evaporate from the skin, thereby cooling the body. Lower dew points feel drier and higher dew points feel more humid. Unlike temperature, which typically varies significantly between night and day, dew point tends to change more slowly, so while the temperature may drop at night, a muggy day is typically followed by a muggy night.

The chance that a given day will be muggy in Costa Brava is essentially constant during March, remaining around 0% throughout.

For reference, on August 12, the muggiest day of the year, there are muggy conditions 42% of the time, while on December 12, the least muggy day of the year, there are muggy conditions 0% of the time.

The popular holiday region Costa Brava (“wild coast”) covers the northeastern Mediterranean coast of the Spanish region Catalonia over a length of over 120 miles. It stretches from Portbou on the Pyrenees to Lloret de Mar.

At the southern end of the Costa Brava begins the metropolitan province of Barcelona. The coast owes its name to the rugged rock formations and steeply sloping serras. However, there are also many beautiful sandy beaches, including Sant Pere Pescador and the resort of Empuriabrava.

The overall rough coast is unsurpassed in natural beauty, on the Costa Brava active holidaymakers and seaside holidaymakers alike get their money’s worth. In addition, a large number of exciting inland attractions, from the Salvador Dalí Museum to old Romanesque monastery ruins and picturesque old towns, attract visitors.

The most important tourist centres of the Costa Brava are Calella (de la Costa), Lloret de Mar, Ampuriabrava, Rosas, Tossa de Mar and Playa de Aro. Playa de Pals, L’Escala, Malgrat de Mar, Santa Susanna and Pineda de Mar are also becoming increasingly popular.

Those who do not travel to the Costa Brava by car can easily reach the region via the international airport Girona-Costa Brava about 8 miles outside the provincial capital Girona. The journey via Barcelona (about 56 miles from Lloret de Mar) is also a cheap and fast option.

Climate on the Costa Brava (Spain)

The Costa Brava has a Mediterranean climate, which is always somewhat cooled by the partly strong winds (Tramuntana), especially in spring and autumn. The average temperatures are therefore also slightly below those of Andalusia or the Costa Blanca.

Nevertheless, the Costa Brava climate can be described as very pleasant and mild. Between June and September the daytime temperatures are always above 25 °C, although peaks of more than 30 °C are possible on hot days.

The partly icy land wind in spring and autumn sometimes reaches storm strength and makes these travel seasons on the Costa Brava somewhat unpredictable. The coast has around 210 sunny days a year and experiences the heaviest rainfall statistically between September and November.

This is the wettest month of the season and probably a month we would advise you try and skip. With many of the activities in Costa Brava being weather dependent we would hate for your day to be cut short by a thunderstorm which is typical during this time.

It is best to plan your visit around indoor activities and now would be a great time to explore the Dali Museum of surrealism.

Costa Brava weather in November

Average temperatures: 16 – 18°C / 61 – 64°F

Average Rainfall: 59mm (high)

Daily sunshine: 5 hours

The temperature starts to drop quite drastically in this final Autumn month. From an average temperature of 27°C in September to only 17°C in November.

This isn’t a great time to maximise your beach visits and with very little sunshine in the day it would be best to spend the morning exploring the ancient cities and then cosy up in a spot in the Costa Brava countryside.

Costa Brava weather in December

Average temperatures: 13 – 15°C / 55 – 59°F

Average Rainfall: 39mm (low)

Daily sunshine: 5 hours

In December, there is very little sunshine during the day and the temperatures drop quite low. Quite a few of the small beach establishments actually close during winter so it’s best to plan a visit to one of the major cities like Girona or Tossa de Mar.

Roam around the storybook medieval streets and then enjoy some delicious Spanish tapas at one of the many amazing restaurants you’ll find in the city.

Last thoughts on weather in Costa Brava

Costa Brava has a lot to offer. You don’t want to miss out on the perfect beach days, picturesque National Parks and charming cities because of bad weather.

Make sure you plan your trip with the weather in mind to make the most of your time on this dazzling coastline.

We base comfort level on dew point, as it determines whether sweat will evaporate from the skin, cooling the body. A lower dew point makes you feel more dry, while a higher dew point makes you feel more humid. Unlike temperature, which typically varies significantly between day and night, dew point tends to change more slowly, so while temperatures may drop at night, a wet day usually gives way to a wet night.

        Method

For each hour between 8:00 and 21:00 of each day in the analyzed period (from 1980 to 2016), independent scores are calculated for perceived temperature, cloudiness, and total precipitation. These scores are combined into a single hourly summary score, which is then combined into days, averaged over all years of the analyzed period, and smoothed.

Our cloud score of is 10 for completely clear skies, falling linearly to 9 for mostly clear skies and 1 for completely overcast skies.

Our precipitation score of , which is based on three-hour precipitation centered on the hour in question, is 10 for no precipitation, falling linearly to 9 for light precipitation, and to 0 for 1 millimeter precipitation or higher.

Our temperature score for tourism is 0 for perceived temperatures below 10 °C , increases linearly to 9 for 18 °C , to 10 for 24 °C , falls linearly to 9 for 27°C and up to 1 for 32°C or higher.

        Our temperature score for beach/pool is 0 for perceived temperatures below 18 °C , increases linearly to 9 for 24 °C , to 10 for 28 °C , decreases linearly to 9 for 32 ° C and up to 1 for 38 °C or higher.

Definitions of growing season vary around the world, but in the context of this description, we define it as the longest continuous period of temperatures above freezing (≥ 0°C) in a year (the Northern Hemisphere calendar year, or July 1 to 30 June in the Southern Hemisphere).

The growing season in the Costa Brava usually lasts 11 months ( 321 days ), from about February 5, to December 23, , rarely starting after March 4, and rarely ending before November 23, .

The information on this site is provided as is, without any guarantee of its accuracy or suitability for any purpose. The weather data may contain errors, glitches and other defects. We are not responsible for any decisions made on the basis of the information provided on this website.

We pay special attention to the fact that for a number of important data types we rely on reconstructions based on the MERRA-2 model. With huge advantages in temporal and spatial completeness, these reconstructions: (1) are based on computer models that may have typical model errors, (2) use coarse sampling on a 50 km grid and therefore cannot reconstruct local variations in many microclimates, and (3) experiencing particular weather difficulties in some coastal areas, especially on smaller islands.

We also caution that our travel points are only as accurate as the data on which they are based, that the weather conditions in any particular place and at any time are unpredictable and changeable, and that points calculation reflects a certain set of preferences that may not coincide with preferences of the individual reader.
