City tours, excursions and tickets in Canary Islands and surroundings
Spain – moving around the country
In every major city of Spain, there are bus stations which are the departure point for traveling to the most remote provinces and resorts. On average, the intervals of routes around the city are about 15 minutes, while intercity trips run every 40 minutes. Some bus trips take to the line even at night. On the other hand, the number of trips is significantly reduced on holidays and on weekends. You can pay for your fare directly in the bus, but it will be a little more economical to purchase a travel card for 10 trips. This card however must be punched. For tourists, there are special sightseeing buses in the cities that allow you to visit all the most famous and historically important places of the city in one day. If the long-distance journey by bus seems too long and uncomfortable, you can use air transport. The country has an extremely developed internal air communication, and there is an airport on the outskirts of every major city. The cost of tickets for domestic flights is quite cheap.

Nature and parks of Spain
The Canary Islands boast another national park, Garajonay. It preserves moist laurel forests, which covered the whole of Europe in ancient times. One of the best natural reserves is the National Park of the Cabrera Archipelago. More than 80% of its territory falls on the water surface. The archipelago is located away from the mainland. It’s uninhabited, due to which its flora and fauna practically did not change. It’s prohibited to sail there. Tourists are given a license to visit, which is active during 1 day only. Colonies of seagulls live in the archipelago; dolphins inhabit the water around isles. Tourists will also be able to visit the fortress built in the 14th century, a museum, and a souvenir shop.

Best hikes in Canary Islands
Experience the subtropical climate of Spain
The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago located on the north-west coast of Africa. There are 7 main islands, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma. Every island has something different to offer but all of them will give the perfect conditions to enjoy your adventure with 4 of 14 of the National Parks of Spain and 11 Natural Parks.
Walking from dunes of white sand to narrow canyons, volcanic cliffs, magic forests and remote beaches is possible in Canarias, where the landscape of these islands are highly variable going from the dry islands of the east to the green and rainy islands of the west part of the archipelago.
A subtropical climate and a rich biodiversity make the hikes even more interesting and attractive. The islands are really well considered for astronomical observation, especially La Palma and Teide in Tenerife.

Practical Information
For arriving at any of the 7 islands from the outside of the archipelago there are two different ways, by plane and by boat.
-Boat: Trasmediterranea and Naviera Armas.
The better option to fly to the island may vary depending on the place of departure:
-Ryanair especially from UK, Spain, Ireland, Poland, northern Italy, Belgium and Germany
-Vueling especially from Spain, France, Switzerland and other countries not included in the list of the other airlines.
-Easy Jet especially from France (Paris), Switzerland and UK.
-Norwegian and SAS from Scandinavia, North America and Spain.
By plane: Binter Canarias, Air Europa and Canary Fly
By boat: Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas
Public Transport: Each island has its bus network that connects villages.
Hitchhike is allowed except in motorways (Autopistas and Autovias)
Blablacar connects drivers with empty seats with travellers with the same way or destination.
Couchsurfing in the Canary Islands works quite well in populated areas but there’s almost no community in rural areas so it can be hard to find a host.
Wild camping is generally not allowed with the exception of the regulated camping areas where is needed to take a permission with no cost. Each island has different places to pitch a tent and different websites to take the permissions.
There is a wide offer of rural Hostels around all the islands but only a few low-budget are found in the websites of Hostelworld and Booking, especially in the countryside.
Airbnb is getting more popular worldwide and in the Canary Islands is not an exception. It can be useful for those places where only expensive hotels and apartments are found and sometimes in rural areas. You can get 25€ off for your next trip here!
Especially relevant is that the Canary Islands are not only beaches and sun. You will find beautiful white villages, good food and better nature. Enjoy of the volcanic landscape and Caribbean beaches of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, explore the rural villages and the summit areas of Tenerife and Gran Canaria and discover the hilly west islands with the best hikes.
The Canary Islands have a subtropical climate more wet and colder (16-18 ºC) weather during winter and dryer and warmer (24-26ºC) during summer so the temperature is always pleasant and doesn’t vary much.
The west part of the archipelago is greener due to rains often and the east part is very dry and often sunny.
The north face of the islands is way greener than the south and while in the north can be raining in the south can be sunny and hot.
Any time is good for going to the Canary Islands but the best time to hike and enjoy of the beauty of the islands is during spring when the temperatures are a bit colder and the landscape is greener. During winter expect some rain especially in the mountains.
Dangers and tips
Protect your skin form the sun and carry enough water, more during summer when temperatures can reach 40ºC.
There’s no danger of being attacked by animals. Only jellyfishes can hurt you while swimming especially during winter. Protect your skin form the sun.
Several beaches have very strong currents.
Be aware of the weather conditions while hiking and driving, heavy rain causes flash floods in the steep valleys and rockfalls may occur.

Where are the Canary Islands located? Tenerife map in Russian.
Which country does the Canary Islands belong to? In ancient times, the archipelago was inhabited by the Guanche tribes, who, before the arrival of Europeans, cultivated the land and were engaged in cattle breeding. In 1334, French sailors visited the islands, and the natives had to make room. According to the laws of that time, all newly discovered lands fell under the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Vatican, represented by Pope Clement VI, presented the Canary Islands to Count Alfonso XI, the ruler of Castile, the largest province in the world. The natives did not bring any economic benefit, and on the contrary, the ruler was obliged from now on to improve life on the islands. The Count did not directly dare to renounce the archipelago, but he tried through difficult negotiations to transfer his ownership to other hands. The question of who owns the Canary Islands literally hung in the air.
Who is the boss anyway?
It would seem that the answer to the question of which country the Canary Islands belong to lies on the surface. The owner is Spain, but everything was not so simple.
Half a century later, the French decided to take over the islands. Military vessels proceeded along the West African coast, which then approached two islands in the center of the archipelago – Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The local population languidly resisted the annexation.
In Gran Canaria, the French troops celebrated their victory a few days later, and in Tenerife it happened a little later. This was followed by periodic landings on the Canary Islands by conquerors of all stripes, from Moroccan soldiers to the English admiral Robert Blake, who spent a brilliant near the island of Tenerife in 1657, engaging in battle with the Spanish armada. He emerged victorious from this confrontation, but the islands, nevertheless, went to Spain.
After 140 years, the famous Admiral Nelson tried to capture Tenerife, but the capital of the Canary Islands, Santa Cruz, stood in his way, and he was defeated. Eventually the British abandoned their imperial ambitions.
The question of which country the Canary Islands belong to remained unanswered for a long time, until in 1821 the archipelago was finally ceded to Spain. In 1982, the Canary Islands were proclaimed an autonomous region of the Spanish state, and in 1986, the province of Canaries joined the European Union. Thus, the answer to the question of which country the Canary Islands belong to is now unambiguous. As a result of numerous renaming and status changes, the right decision was made. Today the Canary Islands belong to Spain.
Archipelago today
What is the Canary Islands – a country, a province or some special structure? The geographical position of the archipelago speaks of its conditional belonging to mainland Spain, but the islands have full and unconditional autonomy.
The Canary Islands is a country in terms of social arrangements and the availability of services necessary to maintain law and order. These are the police, courts and legal institutions. Although, on the other hand, all of the above services are practically inactive, since the Canaries are a supertourism zone, millions of travelers come to the blessed land to relax, have fun and forget about the hardships of civilization for a while. No one is breaking the law.
Geography
The Canary Islands are located just a hundred kilometers from the African continent and seven hundred from the coast of Spain. The archipelago adjoins Africa from the northwest (at the junction of Western Sahara and Morocco).
There are only seven Grand Canary Islands. The closest island to the African coast is Lanzarote, the next island is Fuerteventura, then Gran Canaria, followed by Tenerife, Gomera, La Palma and Hierro. These are the largest volcanic formations, but there are many more minor ones.
A list that includes the most popular Canary Islands, a map of their location, directions, etc. – all this information can be obtained from the tourist offices of Spain or upon arrival at about. Tenerife.
The islands are not alike, each of them is attractive in its own way. For example, Lanzarote is ideal for lovers of a quiet measured holiday, and Gran Canaria is a paradise for surfers and divers. For tourists arriving in the Canary Islands, a map and guides will help you navigate in choosing the best vacation spot. There are also hotels for every taste – more expensive, more comfortable, economy class hotels with reasonable prices.
It is difficult to say how many Canary Islands are in the archipelago, an exact calculation has not been carried out. However, it is known that not all of them are inhabited. At one time, the municipal authorities even opened the sale of small islands. Those who wished could purchase at a reasonable price a small piece of land in the ocean. Trade was brisk until the Spanish authorities on the mainland intervened. The capital of the Canary Islands, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, was then forced to give part of its powers to the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Most popular destinations
The best island in the Canary Islands, according to most tourists, is Tenerife. In second place in popularity – Gran Canaria. These islands are notable for their developed infrastructure, high-class hotels, excellent entertainment complexes for both adults and children.
The Canary Islands, photos of which are presented in the article, have long been one of the best places for outdoor activities. Tourists are attracted by the choice and impeccable service.
Landscape
The Canary Islands, the photos of which amaze the imagination, are volcanic formations that appeared above the water millions of years ago. Until now, on the surface you can observe bizarre landscapes with frozen lava, which are adjacent to long sand dunes, reminiscent of Luxurious beaches washed by ocean waves, and hotel complexes with palm alleys begin right behind them. A warm breeze from the sea stirs the green branches of trees, vacationers feel unity with nature, and this happens throughout the day. When the term of parting with the Canaries approaches, no one wants to leave. The charm of a piece of paradise remains in the memory for a long time, until the next visit.
Climate
The climate of the Canary Islands is temperate tropical, dry and hot, but not sultry. The temperature range is determined by the proximity of the African coast. Hot trade winds mix with oceanic air masses. It turns out a kind of airy cocktail, cool and comfortable, which spreads throughout the Canary Islands. Air masses are constantly updated. The climate is also softened by a permanent anticyclone over the Azores, located northwest of the archipelago.
The temperature in the Canary Islands is stable all year round. It is 20-30 degrees Celsius in summer and 16-25 degrees Celsius in winter. During the year, there is a relative influence of mountains and hills on climatic conditions, however, temperature drops are insignificant, they do not exceed 2-3 degrees. Temperature changes occur mainly in the highest Canary Islands – Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma. The climate in the rest of the archipelago remains virtually unchanged.
The water temperature in the area of the considered islands is about 20 degrees Celsius. Equilibrium is achieved due to the Canary current – quite cold, but slow. In general, the temperature regime on the islands is very comfortable and stable. In a nutshell, the climate in the Canary Islands can be described as follows: warm and sunny.
For tourists who flew to the Canary Islands in winter, the weather in December is not much different from spring – just as warm. Of course, a sharp change in climatic conditions within one day is impressive.
The Canary Islands (the weather in December is warmer than in summer in Moscow) continue to amaze visitors. The popularity of a world-class resort knows no bounds for a long time, millions of tourists from all continents fly to Reina Sophia International Airport and choose an island where they will spend unforgettable days.
Canary Islands. Sights, beaches
The natural attraction of the islands in question is the beaches, superbly equipped, covered with golden sand or black basalt pebbles. Showers are placed around the perimeter, sun loungers are located in even rows everywhere, and wide umbrellas from the sun are right there. In special kiosks you can buy diving accessories, fins, masks and other attributes for scuba diving.
City of Los Vinos
This is the oldest settlement on the island of Tenerife. The main city attraction is the thousand-year-old Dragon Tree. Visitors to the ancient convent of San Augustina will walk through the monastic cells, get acquainted with the life of novices, and talk with the abbess. Then you can visit the church of San Marcos and a garden with colonies of tropical butterflies of fabulous beauty.
Loro Park
Initially, these were aviaries with parrots. Nowadays this place is even more amazing. Now the park has collected the rarest breeds of tropical parrots, which are adjacent to orchids blooming all year round, planted throughout the territory (the most beautiful specimens can be admired in the Orchid House). Also in the park “Loro” is a huge aquarium with a whale shark, dolphins, sea lions and other inhabitants of the ocean. A special place is occupied by a penguinarium with an artificial arctic climate.
Teide Park
This is a high-altitude entertainment complex deployed at an altitude of two thousand meters. The temperature there is kept at the level of forty degrees Celsius. In the center of the park is the crater of an extinct volcano, the diameter of which is 48 kilometers. You can get to its top by lift (mountain climbers climb on foot).
Hell Gorge
In the southern part of the island of Tenerife is the only natural waterfall in the Canary archipelago, an oasis in the middle of a dry and barren plain. This cascade of silvery jets is called the Gorge of Hell. Tourists can experience the full power of the unbridled elements by going under the rock from which the waterfall falls.
Pyramids of Guimar
These are cult buildings replicating man-made elevations in Peru, Mexico and ancient Mesopotamia. Initially, the pyramids in Guimard were mistaken for piles of stones piled up by Spanish settlers when clearing the land for plowing. However, later a group of researchers, among whom was a famous traveler, came to the conclusion that six heaps of stones are nothing but pyramids.
In addition, in the Guimard Park there is a museum of ethnography “House of Chacone”, which exhibits a life-size architectural model of the palace of King Ra II.
Cliffs of giants
Huge stretches of the coast of Tenerife are occupied by grandiose cliffs, standing close to the water itself, and in some places – by ledges descending into the ocean. Rocks are considered sacred, their constant desire to plunge into the abyss is similar to a divine ritual.
The only way to get to the enchanted cliffs is from the sea by boat or motor boat.
Anaga Mountains
Magnificent highlands on the island of Tenerife are a boundless botanical world. Mountain plateaus called Anaga are an example of ecological cleanliness. There you can meet local residents living in caves.
The Canary Islands, whose attractions are on a par with world masterpieces of nature and ethnography, attract millions of tourists. Airlines operate at full capacity, planes land and take off every minute.
Seven islands as seven wonders of the world
Remarkable and unique archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean and its pearl – the island of Tenerife. Spain, Canary Islands – the best holiday destination in the whole world.
Lanzarote is an island of dormant volcanoes. Entire fields of solidified lava, unusual landscapes on the plains and mountain slopes, multi-colored petrified streams recreate picturesque panels of extraordinary beauty. The Timanfaya National Park of Lanzarote can be seen as a permanent display of natural art. And the hotel infrastructure organically merges with natural scenery. Lanzarote is a biosphere reserve, surrounded by virgin nature, against the backdrop of a volcanic landscape.
Fuerteventura is an island of an endless suite of magnificent virgin beaches, completely empty, allowing you to enjoy the ocean views in complete solitude. Nowhere in the world is there such freedom as on the beaches of Fuerteventura. Sea water is amazingly clean and warm, it glows with turquoise. The island is ideal for those who prefer a romantic pastime, a vacation away from the hustle and bustle of civilization. During the whole day you can feel like a Robinson in silence and complete solitude, and in the evening you can return to a comfortable hotel for dinner.
Gran Canaria is famous not only for its magnificent golden beaches, but also for its extensive infrastructure. As an addition to the overall picture of prosperity – the nature of the island, striking in its diversity. Deep forested ravines alternate with verdant peaks, all joined together in a grandiose panorama. The central part of the island of Gran Canaria is covered with a luxurious floral carpet, in the south there are gently sloping shores with beaches, and in the north, rocks rise into the sky, bordering small coves with azure water. Any kind of sport is held in high esteem on the island – horseback riding, golf and tennis, fishing and spearfishing.
Tenerife
The largest and most comfortable island. Its nature is unique, the diversity of relief is amazing. In the center is the Teide snow cap, in the north are green massifs, the southern part is all in golden sand, the beaches lined up in a neat row. The island of Tenerife has a unique tourist infrastructure, there are restaurants with national cuisines from almost all countries of the world, health centers, sports and gyms, all kinds of excursions on land and by sea are organized. All this makes your stay in Tenerife unforgettable.
Gomera
An island famous for its relic vegetation. The natural exoticism of Homer is available to tourists coming from the island of Tenerife by ferry.
La Palma
The most flourishing and greenest of all the islands of the Canary archipelago. The infrastructure is poorly developed, but La Palma has ample opportunities for rural tourism. Lovers of rural scenery and serene relaxation should visit this island.
Hierro
The smallest of the Canary Islands. For centuries, it was perceived as the most mysterious place on the planet. The end of the world – this is how Hierro is characterized. There is no better place for those who want to be away from civilization.
In the Canary Islands everything is buried in flowers,
And the Canary Islands are buried in the ocean.
I was in the Canary Islands in pink dreams
And there I declared my love to Marianne.
Ensemble “Merry Fellows”
Canary Islands (Spanish Islas Canarias, English Canary Islands, Canary Islands, Canarias) – the general name for an archipelago of a dozen volcanic islands located 115 km from the northwestern coast of Africa. They belong to and are one of the Autonomous Communities of this country. They have two capitals on different islands – Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The total area is 7447 sq. km. Population 2 119000 people.
The Canary Islands include 13 islands, of which 7 are the main and inhabited: Lanzarote, Palma, Gomera, Hierro. The most popular and touristic are the first four. We also inhabit the small island of Graciosa. On the small islands – Alegranza (10 km²), Montaña Clara (1 km²), Lobos (6 km²), Roque del Oeste and Roque del Este – no one lives.
In the past, the Canary Islands were considered an elite and expensive resort, but now they are quite affordable. What attracts tourists here so much? Warm and cool summers, mild winters, green hills and valleys, unusual rocks, amazingly beautiful beaches with volcanic sand, a rich underwater world, natural and man-made monuments of various eras, good conditions for surfers, air accessibility, a large selection of fruits at any time of the year, excellent service, low prices in stores compared to Europe (due to the fact that it is a free economic zone), a varied cuisine, which is a mixture of Spanish, African and Latin American dishes – the list is endless. Each island has its own characteristics and unique flavor. Moving from one place to another, you will never get bored and will always discover something new and amazing.
The name “Canary Islands” comes from the Latin Canariae Insulae, meaning “Isles of Dogs”. Two dogs can also be seen on the coat of arms. According to one version, in the past there were many dogs here, which the local tribes considered sacred, and according to another, they mean sea dogs or sea lions that had colonies on the islands.

Brief history
The Canary Islands have a very rich history. The first settlements here were founded by the primitive tribes of the Guanches and Bimbache. In ancient times, they were visited by the Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians, but no cities were built here.
The first French navigators visited the islands in 1334, which 10 years later were donated to Castile (this is a historical region of Spain). At the beginning of the 13th century, colonization and displacement of local tribes began. It took only 2 years and in 1404 King Henry III of Castile proclaims Jean de Betancourt king of the Canaries. But for almost a century there were wars with the Guache tribes on the island of Tenerife. Only on September 29, 1496, Alonso de Lugo announced the complete subjugation of the Canary Islands.
During his first journey in search of India, Christopher Columbus makes a stop on the island of Homer. Later, the archipelago becomes the most important point on the way from Europe to America. Because of this, heated disputes flare up, which lead to clashes. Attempts to capture the islands were made by the Dutch and the British. They did not escape the raids of pirates. But Spain came out of all conflicts with honor and left the archipelago behind.
In 1982, the Canary Islands become an autonomous region of Spain, and all its inhabitants are full subjects of the Spanish crown.
Why go to the Canary Islands
Who should go to the Canary Islands? The answer will be short – everyone! It is difficult to single out any particular group that may not like it here. First of all, people come here because of the mild climate: in summer it is not as hot here as in European resorts, and in winter it is quite warm – you can even swim, which is unlikely to work in the Mediterranean Sea. And no rains will spoil your vacation, as there are very few of them in any of the seasons.
Nature lovers will find here a lot of greenery, tropical forests, palm oases, vineyards, olive plantations, numerous volcanoes.
Of course, there are also beaches, for lovers of the sea and sun loungers. There are both wild places (including nudist ones) and civilized ones with all the infrastructure. Many of the beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag. From exotic – beaches with volcanic dark sand.
A rich excursion program will not leave anyone indifferent. There are attractions for every taste, which were left by ancient tribes, ancient and medieval settlers. Well, there is no need to talk about the many natural attractions.
Couples with children can also safely go to the Canary Islands. Children will not be bored. For them, the Siam amusement park was built with water slides and attractions for all ages. There are also many parks on the islands where you can get acquainted with unusual animals and birds.
Divers will find many caves and grottoes, sunken ships, rich flora and fauna in the sea. Here you can dive all year round, since the water temperature even in winter rarely drops below +20 degrees.
Water activities, ocean fishing, windsurfing, yachting, skydiving, golf, tennis, safari, go-karting, rock climbing, shooting, cycling, horseback riding and much more await lovers of active pastime.
Fans of entertainment will find numerous discos and clubs, which are the most in Tenerife. Every month, the archipelago hosts several holidays and festivals.
Lovers of silence can seclude themselves on sparsely populated beaches or settle away from major tourist places (they are on any of the islands).
Canary Islands on the world map
You can buy air tickets as profitably as possible with the help of special search engines that collect data from all airlines.
Transport
Almost all Canary Islands have paved roads. Buses run between popular settlements. You can always get to any place by taxi, the drivers are well versed in the location of hotels and main tourist places, although they do not always speak English.
The rental of motorcycles and bicycles is quite developed. On all the popular islands of the archipelago, cars of any brand are offered for rent. You can rent a car both at the airport and at most popular resorts. The doors of such well-known global companies as Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, La Palma 24 are open for you. We recommend buying a road map, since there are many one-way streets in large cities, and the road system is rather confusing. If you do not want to look for rental offices on the spot, then you can advance. Then it will be waiting for you at the airport and you will immediately begin your journey, without being distracted by anything else.
No matter what island you are vacationing on, you can always organize an interesting excursion program for yourself.
For example, there is an ancient city of Galdar with the remains of settlements of indigenous people. On Lanzarote, you can see the ancient fortress of the 16th century, which is now a museum. In Tenerife, the pyramids rise in the Guimar desert. On the island of La Palma, it is worth seeing the Caldera de Taburiente volcano and the Columbus Museum. And these are only the most important attractions of the Canary Islands.
Beaches
Each island of the archipelago is unique and has its own characteristics.
The most developed in terms of tourism with good infrastructure. Steep rocky shores adjoin volcanic sand beaches, mountains with dense tropical foliage give way to desert zones, and behind steep ravines there are valleys of banana plantations. perfect for a relaxing holiday, in addition, many beaches here with white sand. Lanzarote is famous for its volcanoes, of which there are more than three hundred.
The beaches in the Canary Islands are very diverse. Their total length is more than 1500 km. Most of them are of volcanic origin, so the sand on them is black. But many Tenerife beaches are covered with white sand imported from Africa. There are also pebble coasts.
Everyone here will find something to their liking. If you want to be close to all the infrastructure and entertainment, then you should stay, for example, in the Las Americas area.
The most famous beaches of Gran Canaria are El Ingles and, in Tenerife – Playa de Taganana and Las Teresitas, in Fuerteventura – Playa de Corralejo and El Reducto.
Climate
The climate of the Canary Islands varies and depends on the situation of a particular place. It can be quite cold in the mountains, but in coastal areas the climate is similar to dry tropical and subtropical. In summer +25 … +30 during the day and +20 at night, in spring and autumn about +20 during the day, in winter it is rarely below +15. There is little precipitation, in summer they practically do not happen at all. The weather here is one of the best among all European resorts, the number of sunny days is a record.
Canary Islands – one of the most famous resorts in the world, which is an archipelago of thirteen islands. They are located in the Atlantic Ocean. This place is famous for its volcanic beaches, breathtaking landscape and pleasant climate that allows you to swim in warm water all year round.
The Canary Islands are not so easy to find on the world map because of their small size and not obvious location. In their search, it can also be confusing that the Canaries are a province of Spain that once gained autonomy, but they are located not far from Africa. They are a thousand kilometers away from Spain, and only one hundred and fifteen from the African mainland.
Because of this location, the local atmosphere is far from European. The Canary Islands are more like Latin America than Europe. Juicy fruits, volcanoes, golden and black sand, tropical plants and warmth all year round attract tourists from all over the world.
The Canary Islands on the map are not too crowded. If you look closely, you can see that only some of them are signed: Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Tenerife and La Palma. However, El Hierro and La Gomera are not deprived. They are the largest, most populated and visited. However, next to them you can find a few more patches of land, and these islands on the map are also Canary. They are called Roque del Oste and Roque del Este, Alegranza, Lobos, La Graciosa and Montaña Clara.
The capital of the Canarian Autonomy moves from city to city every four years. The first one is Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the second one is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Most people may think that the name of the Canary Islands comes from the fact that canaries live here, but in reality the situation is the opposite: the birds were named after the islands. The Canaries got their name due to the fact that once upon a time there lived special dogs resembling mastiffs, and the name of this breed gave the name to the islands. These dogs are now emblazoned on the coat of arms of the islands.
The first settlers to these islands came from Africa about five thousand years ago. Europeans got here relatively recently – about two thousand years ago. At a time when it was believed that the Earth was flat, they seriously believed that the edge of the world is located precisely on the Canary Islands. At that time, the same dogs that gave the name to the Canaries lived here.
For a time, the islands resisted the Spanish conquest, but by the end of the fifteenth century the entire archipelago fell into the hands of Spain, and already at the beginning of the sixteenth century slaves and cane plantations appeared here. Shortly after this, the islands are in crisis, people are served as pirates, and grapes are grown instead of reeds. Several times the islands became poorer, then richer, and Queen Isabella II made the Canaries a free trade zone. The islands served as the starting point for all sorts of unrest and rebellions, which stopped only after Spain gave the islands autonomy. In the middle of the last century, the first plane landed here, it was from that moment that the tourism business flourished on the islands, which got even stronger when the islands joined the European Union nine years after Spain.
Who lives in the Canaries?
Now the population of the Canary Islands looks like it consists entirely of Spaniards. However, as can be seen from the history of the islands, the Canary people are a mixture of many different nationalities and even races, because the Canaries were once a bridge between Africa, Europe and Latin America. And the people resulting from all historical events speak Spanish, the culture also develops mainly Spanish, but its representatives call themselves Canarians.
Oddly enough, there are even more Canarians in the Canaries than tourists. It turns out this is due to the fact that visitors most often go to large cities, while the outskirts remain with the indigenous population.
Climatic and natural conditions
The Canary Islands are located in the Tropic of Cancer, not far from them the Gulf Stream flows in the ocean, and hot winds often blow here from Africa, so the climate of the islands is consistently warm. There is no clear division into seasons, all year round the weather pleases with moderately high air temperatures, due to which the climate of the Canary Islands is considered one of the ideal on the entire planet. In winter, the average temperature here is kept at nineteen degrees, and in summer – twenty-six.
Despite the fact that the territory of the Canaries in the aggregate is not that big, the weather on one island at the same time can be very different from the weather on another. This is due to the mountainous landscape of several islands and their position relative to each other. The eastern islands are characterized by higher air temperature, drier here than in the western part of the archipelago, where it rains more often. The north side of the islands is somewhat cooler than the south. The southern shores are better warmed by the sun. It can be much colder at the top of the Canary Mountains than at the bottom, and this difference is very surprising to most tourists.
If you take a detailed map of the Canary Islands, you will notice that there are no rivers on the islands, however, you can find a huge number of plants here. This is due to frequent rains and, of course, ocean moisture, from which we can conclude that the sun is still often hidden by clouds, but warm rain pours from them. The only “setup” from the weather that can be expected here is the sirocco wind. It is very dry and suffocating, occasionally flies here from the deserts of Africa.
Each island boasts its own climatic features that distinguish it from others. For example, Fuerteventura is like a miniature Sahara – it’s a real desert. Its center is deserted and quiet, while on the banks, thanks to the abundance of sand, there are the best beaches of the entire archipelago. Lanzarote is a natural reserve of volcanoes, and La Palma is famous for its ancient forest.
Due to such a variety of weather conditions and the separation of the islands from the mainland, many rare representatives of the plant and animal kingdom have been preserved here. Scientists and conservationists have organized several reserves in the Canary Islands, they make up about a third of the total territory of the archipelago.
Where is the best place to stay?
Due to the variety of landscapes and climatic features, each island of the archipelago has its own set of resorts and attractions for tourists.
Tenerife is the largest of all the Canary Islands. Here you can find interesting ways to spend time, both lovers of noisy parties and supporters of a quiet holiday. For those who prefer to drink and have fun, the cities of Los Cristianos and Las Americas are suitable. They do not stop discos, and Western Europeans are regulars for these cities.
The city of Puerto de la Cruz has the opposite tourist orientation, it is one of the most peaceful places on the island. The Canarian cliffs are presented here in all their glory, which is why, however, it will not be possible to swim among them, if only in the pools near the hotels.
The most versatile of all the islands of the Canary resorts is Gran Canaria. For visitors, there are a lot of various shops and various establishments. There are many hotels and entertainment for lovers of a fun holiday. Athletes can visit windsurfing and fishing centers, and yacht lovers can easily find any boat here for rent or excursions. In addition, this island allows you to skydive or feel like a desert dweller on Dune Beach.
The best sands are found on the island of Fuerteventura, here are the largest beaches, where no one will be crowded, and the center of the island will help you relax in the silence of the sand dunes. Water sports centers thrive along the coasts.
Lanzarote will appeal to everyone who loves volcanoes and nature. There are no amenities of civilization here, but the landscape of this island in places is similar to the lunar surface. In addition, here you can meet tourists and scientists who care about the preservation of nature, for sure you can hear a lot of interesting things from them.
Other large islands in the Canary area are not so rich in hotels and entertainment centers, but their nature is an attraction in itself, where you can do agritourism and enjoy the beauty of landscapes.
The remaining small islands of the archipelago will please everyone with cliffs, mountain landscapes and small hidden beaches that will appeal to everyone who loves solitude.
Modes of transportation
You can get to the Canary archipelago by sea and air. People also come here by ship, but the most common transport is still air. You can also fly from one island to another by plane. Canarian airlines help you fly from the southern edge of the archipelago to the northern one in just a matter of minutes. Thanks to this, you can save a lot of time, which takes the crossing from island to island by means of boats or yachts. However, most people still prefer sea transport to travel around the islands of the Canary archipelago, because with the help of a sea vessel you can leisurely survey all the beauties of each island, listen to the fascinating stories of guides, enjoy the warm wind and salty water spray.
There are several modes of transport in the Canary Islands themselves. Tourists can use relatively inexpensive taxis or even more affordable buses. Bus drivers and taxi drivers speak the most popular European languages, so it will not be difficult to communicate with them. The cities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Cristobal de la Laguna are connected to each other by a tramway, many tourists even consider this a special feature of the Canaries.
For those who like to move around on their own, hotels offer to rent a car, and often the cost of this service is included in the price of hotel accommodation. There are many roads in the Canary Islands, so travel can bring a lot of pleasure from exploring the sights.
Attractions
In addition to beaches and unique natural sites, the Canary Islands are famous for their interesting places to visit. Many people first go to the city of Galdar, which is located in the northwestern part of Gran Canaria.
It is famous for containing the remains of the first inhabitants of the Canary Islands. There is a Cueva Pintada cave, the walls of which are dotted with drawings of the Guanches tribe. Scientists suggest that these bright ornaments could serve as a calendar for ancient people. If you want to get acquainted not with prehistoric remains, but with the living people of the Canaries, then you can go to the village of Pueblo Canario. There are many colorful houses built in the traditional Canarian style.
You can get in touch with history and art by visiting the island of Lanzarote. Ancient fortresses still stand here. One of them, San Gabriel, built in the sixteenth century, was taken over as an archaeological museum, and the other, Castillo de San José, was turned into a museum of modern art.
Tenerife is famous for the Guimar desert. In addition to amazing sands, here you can find ancient pyramids. Scientists believe that they were built by the first inhabitants of the Canaries to help in agriculture. Archaeologists have found caves under the pyramids in which the natives lived. Now these places have been turned into an ethnographic park and everyone can visit the local museum or buy souvenirs that are sold here.
Of particular interest to any self-respecting collector of attractions is the house of Christopher Columbus. It is located in Las Palmas. Now this place is a museum, where every visitor is told about the amazing wanderings of the great navigator.
The Canary Islands have an active volcano Caldera de Taburiente, which is one of the pearls of the Canary Islands. It is located on the island of La Palma, where, due to its activity, the picturesque cliffs of Los Gigantes and the amazing gorge of Hell were formed.
Canary Islands Events
The Canary Islands will be interesting not only for adults, but also for children. Young tourists can be shown the active volcano Teide. Teenagers can even climb it. Las Americas will please animal lovers with an eagle park, in which not only the eagles themselves live, but also fur seals, crocodiles, as well as various representatives of the cat and monkey families. Park workers often hold shows with trained birds. In addition, the Canaries have a parrot park, which allows you not only to admire the bright birds, but also swim with dolphins, and a monkey park where you can pet a lemur. After talking with animals, children can go to Siam Park, which will teach them how to ride a slider and help them have a great time in water attractions.
And adults in the Canary Islands will find plenty of cultural activities for themselves. In mid-February, the carnival begins in the Canary Islands, which lasts ten days. Latin American music sounds, the streets are filled with a lot of people dressed in costumes of all ages – both a resident of the Canaries and any visitor can take part in a costume show. The fun goes on two islands at once: Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
At the end of May, the feast of Corpus Christi begins in the Canary Islands; it ends only in mid-June. These days, amazing pictures are created from flower petals, colorful sand and salt right on the squares. They depict religious subjects or copy the works of great artists. On this holiday, various processions are held and songs are sung.
The Canary Islands are famous for excellent diving, because the rocky shores are amazingly beautiful both underwater and for the local sport – Canarian wrestling. This is a team game in which two groups of a dozen players participate. The rules are simple: you need to knock the enemy to the ground. The team with the most members left wins.
The Canary Islands are therefore an ideal tourist destination in almost every respect. In the Canaries, you can relax both alone and with the whole family. Here are very affordable prices, you can choose any type of holiday. The Canary Islands conquer everyone who once got to them.

Canary Islands – a picturesque archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, the land of eternal summer with an ideal climate, emerald valleys, bizarre cliffs and sandy beaches. Officially, the Canary Islands are an autonomous province of Spain, consisting of 7 large islands (El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura) and several small ones. The title of the capital of the archipelago is passed to each other by the cities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria every 4 years.
Despite the fact that the Canary Islands formally belong to Spain, the atmosphere here is by no means European. Tourists come here for real exotic: magnificent tropical landscapes, soft ocean waves, black volcanic beaches and delicious ripe fruits. Fortunately, this exotic is close and accessible: it takes only a few hours to fly to the islands, excluding transfers. In the Canary Islands, you can not only idly relax on the beach: unique prehistoric monuments, volcanoes, waterfalls, “lunar” valleys of solidified lava are scattered all over the islands. And here is excellent service and a real paradise for surfers and divers.
How to get to the Canary Islands
The only way to get to the Canary Islands from Russia is by air. It is most convenient to fly to Tenerife South Airport (more on this on our page), but this is far from the only option. There are several other international airports on the territory of the archipelago. One of them is located on the island of Gran Canaria, 20 km from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. There are no direct flights from Moscow, but there are connecting flights: Aeroflot, S7, Brussels Airlines, British Airways, Iberia, Air Berlin, Jet Airways, Smart Wings, Vueling, Edelweiss. Transfers are carried out in Berlin, Brussels, Madrid, Prague, Munich and other cities. The cheapest tickets are from S7. The fastest flights are with Iberia: 10 hours 5 minutes with a change in Madrid.
Another Canarian airport is on the island of Lanzarote. There are no direct flights from Moscow either; connecting flights are offered by Iberia, S7, Aeroflot, Vueling, British Airways, Air Europa and other carriers. Flight duration – from 8 hours 30 minutes.
International flights are also accepted on the island of Fuerteventura, near Puerto del Rosario. Connecting flights are available from S7, SunExpress, Vueling, Iberia, Air Berlin. The cheapest way to fly is with S7, the fastest with Iberia (8 hours 55 minutes with a change in Madrid).
Finally, Transavia, S7, Iberia and Air Berlin will take you to Santa Cruz de Palma (La Palma). Flight duration – from 10 hours 15 minutes.

Main resorts and islands
The largest island of the Canary archipelago, Tenerife, offers a choice of quiet, secluded holidays, and noisy fun. For example, Los Cristianos, like neighboring Las Americas, is a “brisk” resort, visited mainly by the British and Germans, who are hungry for booze and discos. And Puerto de la Cruz, in turn, is well suited for a relaxing holiday “alone with nature.” Only here the coast there is steep and rocky, there are practically no beaches as such: tourists mostly splash in hotel pools.
Transport
Most of the Canary Islands have modern highways. Urban public transport in Tenerife is represented by the TITSA bus network. Journeys are paid to the driver, the cost of tickets depends on the length of the journey (all prices are on the website). Global buses run on Gran Canaria, tickets – from 1.2 EUR. Routes on Homer connect San Sebastian with other major cities on the island. Less often buses go to Hierro.
A multiple ticket for 15-25 EUR, which is sold at Tenerife bus stations, gives a discount of up to 30% on bus trips.
Trams have recently been running between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Cristobal de la Laguna. Ticket price – 1.35 EUR, the schedule can be found on the carrier’s website (in English and Spanish). Prices on the page are for September 2018.
There are many metered taxis on the islands. Tariffs – from 2.35 EUR for landing and from 0.60 EUR for each km.
Local taxi drivers rarely speak foreign languages, but they are well versed in the names of hotels and other tourist places, so just give the address and ask for a price.
The most convenient way to travel between the islands is by plane: local flights depart daily from Tenerife and Gran Canaria to all the islands of the archipelago, except Gomera. Ferries also operate here, carrying not only passengers, but also cars. High-speed hydrofoils run regularly between Homera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, tickets cost from 20 EUR.
Car rental
You can easily rent a car of any brand in the Canary Islands. This is a great opportunity to see all the local beauty, moving along modern routes on the islands and on high-speed ferries between them. The traffic here is comfortable, traffic jams are rare. But with parking, problems can arise: do not be surprised to see a queue in front of the parking lot. It is most convenient to leave the car in underground parking lots (from 2 EUR per hour).
Many cities in the Canary Islands have a very confusing system of one-way streets, so a map is indispensable.
You can rent a car both at airports and at any popular resort. Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, La Palma 24 and many other well-known companies work here. The cost of renting a small car – from 25 EUR, a minivan – from 35 EUR, a premium car – from 52 EUR per day. Local car rental companies often offer reduced rates for rentals of three days or more. In some offices, you can book not only cars, but also bicycles, motorcycles, scooters and mopeds – a great option for those who appreciate the spirit of freedom on any journey.
Communication and Wi-Fi
A very economical option for international calls – Telefonica payphones installed on the streets of all cities. They accept small coins, the cost of calls to Russia is from 0.40 EUR. Surprisingly, it is a fact: from many local payphones you can not only make calls, but also send SMS and even a message to e-mail.
There are 4 major mobile operators in the Canary Islands: Vodafone, Orange, Telefonica Movistar and Lebara. Their tariffs are almost the same, as well as the quality of communication. For calls to Russia, you can purchase an Orange Tarjeta Internacional card for 5 EUR, which is designed for 30-50 minutes of a call. Telefonica Movistar offers a convenient Habla Internacional option: by connecting it for 1 EUR, you can call Russia for 0.20 EUR per minute.
Almost all hotels provide round-the-clock Internet access, but it usually costs a lot: about 5-7 EUR per hour. It is much easier to leave the room and walk to the reception: in the lobby, Wi-Fi is often free, as well as in many catering establishments.
Beaches of the Canary Islands
The Atlantic coast of the Canaries is 1500 km of magnificent sandy beaches and steep rocky shores. The water in the ocean here is quite cool (the Gulf Stream flows from north to south), but its color is simply amazing: rich blue due to its great depth. The longest white beaches are in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria. The coast of the western islands is more steep. Most of Tenerife’s beaches are covered with golden sand extracted from the bottom of the ocean or delivered from the Sahara.
A magnificent beach ensemble is located near the center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife: on Playa de Taganana – black volcanic sand, on Las Teresitas – more familiar, fine and golden. The real attraction of Puerto de la Cruz is “Playa de Martianes” with a huge lake of flowing sea water, beautiful fountains and numerous bars and restaurants built on small islands.
Most Russians prefer to sunbathe on the southern beaches of Tenerife: long, narrow, comfortable and ideal for families with children.
Attractions in the Canary Islands
In the northwest of Gran Canaria lies the ancient city of Galdar with the remains of the settlements of the indigenous islanders. On the walls of the Cueva Pintada cave, you can see the mysterious drawings of the Guanches tribes: bright, large ornaments in the form of a frieze, which once, perhaps, served as a calendar. Another authentic corner of Gran Canaria is Pueblo Canario, a village with colorful buildings built in the traditional style of the archipelago.
There are two ancient fortresses in Lanzarote at once: Castillo de San Jose, within the walls of which the Museum of Modern Art is located, and San Gabriel of the 16th century, now the location of the Archaeological Museum.
An unforgettable trip to the pyramids in the Guimar desert in Tenerife. Scientists believe that these structures were erected by local farmers who plowed the land and piled the found stones at the borders of the fields. Tur Heyerdahl managed to discover that Guanches, the ancient natives of the Canary Islands, also lived in a cave under one of the pyramids. Today, an ethnographic park with a museum, a souvenir shop and a cafeteria is laid out in the desert.
One of the most interesting places in Tenerife is the Pyramids of Guimar.
The most famous building in Las Palmas is the House of Columbus (website in English), where the legendary navigator stopped to rest during his journey to the New World. Behind the spectacular facade is a museum where visitors can learn a lot of interesting things about the adventures of the discoverer.
Local residents decided to compensate for the lack of large-scale medieval buildings by building the castle of San Miguel in the vicinity of the city of the same name. This is a carefully reproduced copy of an old knight’s castle, where they conduct exciting excursions, surprise with spectacular shows and treat you to a hearty dinner in the best traditions of the Middle Ages.
The main natural attractions of the Canaries are the Caldera de Taburiente volcano on the island of La Palma, the waterfall in the Ada Gorge (despite the name, the scenery here is truly heavenly) and the majestic rock formations of Los Gigantes.

Canary Islands for children
There are many parks on the island of Tenerife, walks through which will bring joy not only to adults, but also to children. The Teide National Park is famous for its unique flora and fauna, and most importantly, for the active volcano of the same name with a height of 3500 m. With older children, you can climb to its peak on foot: fortunately, there is an excellent asphalt track and a funicular. Families with kids are better off renting a car.
Not far from Las Americas, the “Park of the Eagles” has been opened. Not only proud birds of prey live here, but also a variety of animals: from lions, tigers and crocodiles to monkeys and fur seals. For tourists, there is a high-speed bobsleigh track, water shows and exciting performances with the participation of trained eagles are regularly held.
You can continue your acquaintance with exotic nature in the “Parrot Park”. It is here that the world’s largest collection of these birds is collected. In general, this is a record-breaking park: Europe’s largest swimming pool for dolphin shows, the longest shark tunnel and the world’s largest indoor penguin exposition – all this is also located here. And in the “Monkey Park” you can feed lemurs from your hands – the impressions will last for a long time!
There is also an excellent place with water activities in the Canary Islands – Siam Park, built in the Thai style. Wave pool, racing slides, sliders with funnels, play areas for the little ones – you can spend the whole day on the local attractions.
There are also few comfortable beaches, but it is very green and amazingly beautiful. La Palma – ancient laurel forest and petroglyphs of La Sarza. The sights of Fuerteventura are herds of goats, caves and mills, as well as the Betancuria Museum on the crater of an extinct volcano.

In this article I will tell you where the Canary Islands are located on the world map and which island you should go to.
The most popular version of the origin of the name of the Canary Islands is from the word canary. However, it is not. The name Canary Islands (in Spanish, Las Islas Canarias) comes from the Latin Canarias Insulae, which means “islands of dogs”. In the works of the ancient Roman scientist Pliny the Elder, one can find a mention of a large number of dogs on the island. Two of them were taken by the Moorish king Yuba II during his journey. Later, dogs appeared on the coat of arms of the Canary Islands.
According to another version, dogs were called sea dogs or sea lions, which formed large colonies on the islands.
According to the third version, the natives of the island of Guanches considered dogs sacred animals. There may be a relationship between the dog-headed Egyptian deity Anubis and the Canarian worship of this animal.

Let’s take a closer look at the large islands.
- Tenerife is the largest Canarian island and the most popular among tourists. The area of the island is about 2034 sq. km., about 900 thousand inhabitants live on it. The capital of the island is Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The island is home to the Teide Volcano, the highest point in Spain, the six mysterious pyramids of Guimar, the origin of which scientists still disagree on, and the Basilica of Candelaria, the place of worship of the Black Madonna. Some of the objects of Tenerife are under the protection of UNESCO. Read more…
- Gran Canaria is the third largest island in the archipelago. Its area is 1560 sq. km. The capital of the island is the city of Las Palmas. Gran Canaria is the second most popular tourist island after Tenerife. The island is characterized by natural contrast: covered rocky shores are adjacent to sandy beaches, and high mountains and gorges are adjacent to banana plantations. For this feature, Gran Canaria is called “the continent in miniature”. More
- La Palma is an island with an area of 708 sq. km. Most of the area of the island is occupied by chains of high volcanoes, between which there are laurel and pine forests. It is the greenest island in the Canary archipelago. The locals lovingly call La Palma a beautiful island. There are few beaches due to the rocky terrain.
- La Gomera is the nearest neighbor of Tenerife with an area of 370 sq. km. The capital of the island is the city of San Sebastian. Most tourists visit Homera as part of a day trip from Tenerife (you can get to the island by ferry in just an hour). The main attraction of the island is the Garajonay National Park, a relict forest with centuries-old laurels and heathers. Inside the natural park, there is an amazing feeling of something unreal, as if you were in the time of the existence of dinosaurs. On Homer, the Homeric whistle has been preserved to this day, which is always shown to tourists. Once it was the whistle that the locals used to talk to each other. On rough terrain, it was heard at a considerable distance. Read more
- Fuertoventura is considered the oldest Canarian island. Its area is 1659 sq. km. The relief of the island is characterized by low mountains (up to 1000 meters) and a large number of beaches. This island is chosen by tourists who prefer a quiet secluded vacation.
- Lanzarote is the easternmost island of the archipelago. Its area is 845 sq. km. It is called the “island of fire-breathing mountains” because there are more than 300 volcanoes on its territory. But volcanoes do not frighten tourists who want to admire the unearthly landscapes of the islands.
- Hierro is the smallest of the inhabited islands of the Canary archipelago. Its area is about 268 sq. km. A distinctive feature of Hierro are rocky coasts and contrasting landscapes. A gentle and comfortable descent leads only to the bay of El Golfo. Until the 20th century, the island served as a zero meridian, a reference point for determining geographic longitude. As a holiday, Hierro is suitable for nature lovers.

where the Canary Islands are located, makes you wonder, because their location is a volcano. Yes, yes, and this is not a joke. The Canaries are located on the territory formed as a result of the activity of extinct volcanoes.
Basic information
The name of the archipelago, located in the Atlantic Ocean, is translated as “Isles of Dogs”. Their area is approximately 7.5 thousand square meters. km, and the population reached 2 million 200 thousand people. To navigate with regards to the location, you must first understand where Spain is located on the world map , since the archipelago is an autonomous part of this state. The largest cities are Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Location and composition
If you look at the map of the archipelago, its parts resemble a rainbow in shape, the length of which from southwest to northeast is 500 km. The distance to Spain is 1300 km, and to Africa – only 130 km. Morocco and the Canary Islands are located on the same latitude. The beginning of the chain is Lanzarote, and the end is La Palma. The closest is the island of Madeira (at a distance of 400 km from the archipelago), and the closest point in Africa is Cap Juby.
Having determined where the Canary Islands are , you can go to their composition. The archipelago includes the following islands:
- Tenerife;
- Gran Canaria;
- Lanzarote;
- Fuerteventura;
- La Palma;
- Hierro;
- La Gomera.
The area of these large islands is 2057, 2533, 795, 1730, 728, 277 and 379 thousand square meters. km, respectively. Among the small ones, only La Graciosa is inhabited. The bulk of the population is concentrated in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Having determined where the Canaries are located , it must be clarified that the archipelago itself is an element of Macaronesia, which also includes the Azores, Madeira, Selvagens and the Cape Verde Islands. Lanzarote and Fuertevenutara formed 20 million years ago. Gran Canaria arose a little later, and Homer and Tenerife appeared 12 million years later. After another 3 million years, the formation of the archipelago was completed by the appearance of La Palma and Hierro.
Climatic features
– In the area where the archipelago adjoins the African continent, the climate is arid. Trade winds blow in these areas, bringing with them moist air and neutralizing the effect of hot Africa;
– The anticyclone from the Atlantic provides mild conditions, and the cold Canary Current reduces the temperature on the beach areas and delays precipitation;
– Due to the mountainous terrain, some islands are located in several climatic zones at once.
On the islands of the archipelago, the temperature does not fall below +20 degrees. The high tourist season lasts from July to October. The islands are also crowded in February due to the carnival. As you move away from Africa, the vegetation becomes more and more lush and lush. Separate territories are still covered by frozen volcanic lava. Due to the diverse and rich fauna and flora, many reserves and national parks are equipped on the archipelago. Before visiting Azores and Canary Islands , it will not be superfluous to read reviews about the rest of tourists. Otherwise, for example, coming to Hierro to enjoy a beach holiday, you can only get disappointed, since there has been no such thing on this island since the island appeared. However, every corner of the Canary archipelago hides a lot of interesting, exciting and positive things.

Map of the Canary Islands / Geography of the Canary Islands / Map of the Canary Islands
The Canary Islands, once known to the ancient Romans as the Lucky Islands, were named after the large dogs (Canes) that live on the islands.
Originally home to an indigenous population known as Guanches , Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Greeks have visited the Canary Islands over the years.
King Juba is credited with opening the islands to the Western world in the 1st century AD.
At the beginning of the 15th century, the expedition of French explorers Jean de Bethencourt and Gadifer de la Salle, nobles of Henry III of Castile, marked the beginning of the Castilian conquest of the islands. natives. Despite opposition from both sides, Pope Nicholas V declared the Canary Islands under Portuguese control, which eventually led the initial crisis to escalate into an uprising.
The indigenous inhabitants of the Canary Islands resisted the Castilian invaders for almost a century, until the Treaty of Alcaco was signed in 1479, which settled disputes, including the transfer of control of the Canary Islands to Castile.
Complete peace between the natives and the Castiles was not achieved until 1495, and the Canary Islands were incorporated into the Kingdom of Castile after a reconciliation.
Under the rule of Castile, a new economic model was imposed on the islands, based on the cultivation of certain crops, including sugar cane and later wine. Santa Cruz and Las Palmas became important stopping points for the Spanish conquerors, traders and missionaries on their way to the New Light, and this trade route brought great prosperity to the islands.
The islands soon became an attractive stopping point for merchants and adventurers from all over Europe, as well as pirates and privateers. Both Las Palmas and Santa Cruz were attacked throughout the 17th century.
In the 18th century, the Canary Islands were in recession due to fierce competition from Spain’s American colonies, and the islanders were looking for a new cash crop known as cochineal , in an attempt to salvage the unstable economy. various Spanish American territories.
At the beginning of the 20th century, rivalries broke out between the cities of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz, in which both fought for the status of the capital, and in 1927 the islands were divided into two provinces. The rivalry continues to this day.
Francisco Franco was appointed commandant general of the Canary Islands in 1936 and quickly joined the military uprising that eventually escalated into the Spanish Civil War. A few years later, opposition to the Franco regime began to form, and the inhabitants of the islands created various nationalist, left-wing parties.
After Franco’s death in 1975, an independence movement took shape and a democratic constitutional monarchy was established in Spain, giving the Canary Islands autonomy.

The planet’s four hemispheres are shown on the map above, each shaded in dark gray.
Equator , , red imaginary horizontal line at 0° latitude at the center of the Earth, divides the Earth into Northern and Southern hemispheres.
The red vertical imaginary line , designated Prime meridian , at 0 degrees longitude, and its double line of longitude, opposite the Prime meridian at 180 degrees longitude, divide the Earth into the Eastern and Western hemispheres.
Therefore ( , with some exceptions ) all countries north of the equator are in the northern hemisphere, and all countries south of the equator are in the southern hemisphere. In addition, all countries west of the Prime Meridian are in the Western Hemisphere, while countries east of the Prime Meridian are in the Eastern Hemisphere.

Where are the Canary Islands?
How do a few days on a tropical island paradise sound? Pretty good, right? Nothing but the rays of the sun warming your body and the soothing sounds of the sea that sing to you as you nap on the beach… yes please!
If that sounds good to you, where should you go? If you need a recommendation, we have one for you. How about a trip to the Canary Islands?
The Canary Islands are an archipelago of eight islands off the northwest coast of Africa. Although closer to Africa than to Europe, the Canary Islands are part of Spain. Over 2 million inhabitants call the Canary Islands home!
The Canaries have an interesting and unique claim to fame. They have not one, but two capitals: Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Remember this fact. Someday this might come in handy during trivia competitions! In one of the capitals – Santa Cruz de Tenerife – every February, the second most popular carnival in the world is held, annually attracting more than a million visitors.
The Canary Islands were formed as a result of volcanic activity. The largest island, Tenerife, has Mount Teide, which is the third largest volcano in the world. It attracts over 12 million visitors annually.
Tourism is important for the economy of the Canary Islands. The beautiful beaches dotted around the islands are popular destinations for visitors, especially as the islands are close to the equator and enjoy a subtropical climate throughout the year.
But there are many other attractions, such as four national parks and plenty of interesting wildlife. For example, if you go diving off the coast of the Canary Islands, you might see the rare, endangered loggerhead tortoise.
You may be wondering how the Canary Islands got their name. While it may seem logical, they are not actually named after a small yellow bird commonly known as a canary. Instead, the islands got their name from the Latin term – Insula Canaria , meaning “Isle of Dogs”.
The ancient Romans, who first visited the islands, gave them this name. Some historians believe that this name comes from the fact that the indigenous people of the islands worshiped dogs. Others believe that the dogs in question were actually monk seals, translated in Latin as “sea wolves”.

10 facts about the Canary Islands (with photos)

The Canary Islands are a group of Spain’s most popular and famous islands, often tainted with the misconception that they are a haven for booze-fueled and beach-crazed British youth. Which countries are in the Northern Hemisphere?
The literal definition of a hemisphere is “hemisphere”, which may lead people to believe that the Northern Hemisphere will contain half the world’s countries and half the population. This is an erroneous assumption. In fact, the vast majority of land on the planet is located in the Northern Hemisphere, and about 90% of the world’s population lives there.
The best way to identify the literally hundreds of countries that lie in the Northern Hemisphere is to refer to the current map of the world. Locate the equator on the map. Every country above this line is considered part of the Northern Hemisphere. This covers the entire continent of North America (including Central America) and all of Europe, most of Asia, about two-thirds of Africa, and about ten percent of South America.
Northern Hemisphere

On closer inspection, it breaks down like this:
North America is made up of 42 countries, including Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Greenland, as well as smaller countries in Central America and various Caribbean island nations .
Europe consists of fifty countries and a dozen other territories. This includes Eastern Europe, some former Soviet states, Northern Europe, Central Europe, and countries and islands in the Mediterranean.
Almost all of Asia is in the Northern Hemisphere, with the exception of Indonesia, which crosses the equator and has most of its land in the Southern Hemisphere. Asia includes China, Russia and the rest of the former Soviet states, Japan, India and the countries of the Middle East, as well as islands such as the Philippines.
