Iranian oil tankers head for Europe for the first time since sanctions were lifted

LONDON (Reuters) – Two Iranian oil supertankers, owned by the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC), have headed for Europe’s largest commercial port Rotterdam for the first time since sanctions were lifted on the Islamic republic last January, industry sources told Reuters.

The supertankers Snow and Huge, carrying 4 million barrels of oil, have left the terminal at the port of Hark and are heading for Rotterdam, according to the Reuters terminal ship tracking system.

Until now, European buyers of Iranian oil preferred to charter ships from other companies.

It is clear that Iran is step by step overcoming the obstacles to regaining the market share lost during the period of Western sanctions.

“One less problem,” said Andrew Wilson, head of research at BRS Brokers. “If they manage to stake out some share in this (European) market, then Rotterdam will only benefit from this.”

During the sanctions period, international insurance companies were reluctant to cooperate with Iran, which reduced its oil exports to a record low of 1 million barrels per day. The pre-sanction volume of oil supplies from Iran was 3 million barrels per day.

Complicated the work of NITC and difficulties in obtaining an international certificate for Iranian ships, which gives access to most of the world’s ports.

But recently, global shipping insurers entered into an agreement excluding US reinsurers from dealing with Iran, which would provide almost full insurance coverage for Iranian oil exports and attract new shipowners to the country’s port.

The agreement comes into force on 20 February.

The fact that Iranian ships have sailed for the port of Rotterdam probably means that Tehran, which plans to increase its supplies of sour oil to Europe, will find it easier to fight for market share in the region, given the recent decision of the member countries of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC ) to reduce production.

At the same time, the reduction in OPEC supplies will mainly affect Europe and the USA, to a lesser extent – Asia, as producers do not want to give up market share in the region, where heavy oil from the USA is already pressing their positions.

Iran, in turn, did not fail to take advantage of an exception to the OPEC pact and in early January sold more than 13 million barrels of oil stored in sea tankers.

According to the source, the number of tankers with unsold Iranian oil has dropped to 11 this week from 14 in early January.
